This fun game, which reminds us of Punch-A-Bunch from The Price is Right, comes from Gina at East Coast Mommy. It will be a hit with your guests and uses supplies that you can buy at the dollar store—a piece of foam core, plastic cups, tissue paper, scissors, and a glue gun. Fill each cup with a small prize. Then cover each cup with two squares of tissue paper and secure with hot glue. Attach each cup to the foam core with hot glue and you’re ready to play! Saran Wrap Ball Game

Kristyn at Lil’ Luna provides this great game idea! All you need to create it is Saran Wrap, a variety of prizes (such as gift cards, candy, cash, and toys), and a broom handle. To create the ball that will be used for the game, put a broom handle through the Saran Wrap roll and secure the handle behind something on both ends. Begin rolling up prizes in the wrap, adding a prize every few rolls, until you have a large ball of prizes wrapped up. To play, you’ll need two oven mitts and two dice. Have all your guests sit in a circle. One person begins with the ball, while the person to their left has the two dice. With oven mitts on, the person with the ball tries to unwrap as much as they can (winning any prizes that fall out) while the person with the dice tries to roll doubles. IN THE KIDBIZ HOW MUCH DO FAMILIES NEED TO LIVE COMFORTABLY? Across the country, Americans are discovering that “living comfortably” now carries a much higher price tag.

Essentials like rent, groceries, and child care have grown more expensive in nearly every region—and, in some cities, families need to earn well into six figures just to keep up with the basics.

In a new analysis, researchers at Upgraded Points reveal how much income Americans need to live comfortably in every U.S. city and state, using the latest data from the Economic Policy Institute and U.S. Census Bureau to calculate a comfortable living wage for individuals, 2-adult households without children, and 2-adult households with 1 to 3 children.

The following were the key finding for the Buffalo area: Report methodology: To establish “living comfortably,” researchers applied the 50/30/20 budget rule, which allocates 50% of income to necessities, 30% to discretionary spending, and 20% to savings or debt payments.

The cost of living comfortably in the Buffalo metro: A single adult needs to earn $94,171 per year to live comfortably in the Buffalo metro, the 14th lowest among the nation’s large metro areas. Meanwhile, the median personal income in the Buffalo metro is $48,263.

Comfortable living for Buffalo metro families: For 2-parent Buffalo metro households, the required income to live comfortably ranges from $185,466 for one child to $256,804 for three, while the median household income stands at $98,392.

Nationwide, comfortable living now requires six figures: On average, a single adult in the U.S. needs $106,745 per year to live comfortably under the 50/30/20 rule. For a 2-adult household with no children, that threshold rises to $138,643, and reaches $278,252 for 2 adults with 3 children.

Stress -Free Tips for Parents

B

irthday parties are supposed to be fun, but for many parents, they come with stress: invitations pile up, weekends get booked, and suddenly you’re running through the toy aisle on the way to the party. The good news? With a little planning and a few simple strategies, birthday invites can feel a whole lot easier.

When it’s your child’s party, you have a lot more control over what happens. You get to decide whether a home party is your speed or you’d rather have the party at an event space where they take care of the details. You can choose favors, activities, and the food. When your child is invited to a party, things can get out of hand fast.

Here are tips to help you manage party season with less stress and more joy.

1. CHOOSE A GIFT CATEGORY One of the biggest stress points is deciding what gift to bring. Make it 6 WNY Family January 2026

Books: Pair a favorite children’s book with a personal note.

Gift cards: Simple, useful, and appreciated—especially for older kids.

Craft kits or puzzles: Encourage creativity without adding clutter.

3. ASK YOUR CHILD FIRST

Classic toy: Think about classic toys that most kids will enjoy, like coloring supplies, Legos, Slinkys, bouncy balls, jump ropes, and Rubik’s cubes.

It’s easy to assume your child will want to attend every party. But sometimes kids don’t feel close to the birthday child, or the environment feels overwhelming. Before you RSVP, ask:

If they’re not interested but feel bad declining, consider making a one-onone playdate instead of having your child attend the party.

4. KEEP WEEKENDS MANAGEABLE It’s inevitable that things will get busy, but back-toback parties can drain the whole family.

Decide 4 ahead of time how many parties your child can attend in a weekend or a month. Saying “no” sometimes keeps the fun from turning into stress.

5. BUDGET AHEAD Parties can get expensive quickly. Set a budget per gift (say $15–$20) and stick to it.

Planning ahead helps you avoid overspending or scrambling at the last minute.

6. CREATE A PARTY KIT Keep a small “party kit” at home with wrapping paper, gift bags, tape, and blank cards. This saves you a lastminute dash to the store and makes getting out the door easier.

7. DON’T OVERTHINK THE DETAILS Parents sometimes worry about whether a gift is good enough or if they’re expected to stay during the party. Here’s the truth: most hosts just want your child to come and have fun. Keep it simple, and don’t add unnecessary stress. And when in doubt, have a quick, honest conversation so everyone is on the same page.

KEEP THE PARTY FUN Birthday parties are meant to be celebrations, not stressors. By making a few small decisions ahead of time, like setting a gift category, RSVPing quickly, and respecting your child’s feelings, you can make party invites simpler, less overwhelming, and even enjoyable.

At the end of the day, the real gift is helping your child celebrate their friendships with joy. Modeling how to do this is key. Your kids are depending on you to set the tone for how to celebrate.

It’s a Dinosaur Party!

S

ince the Caveboy days, dinosaurs have been a fascination among young boys. Dinosaurs were big, destructive, loud and most likely chewed with their mouth open.

What’s not to like? If you have a Caveboy at home, treat him to a dinosaur themed birthday party that will be remembered for the next million years.

ACTIVITIES: 1. Dino Egg Hunt—Fill plastic eggs with dino stickers, stamps, toys or numbers for larger prizes. Oriental Trading offers a large selection of dino-

saur items. Hide eggs around the room or outdoors if the weather is nice. Try assigning egg colors to make sure the boys get an even number of prizes.

2. Make your own fossils—Use 1 cup of used coffee grounds, 1/2 cup of cold coffee, 1 cup of flour and 1/2 cup of salt. Mix well. Divide into four pieces and flatten out with hands. Press shells, sticks, leaves, plastic dinosaurs, etc. into coffee ground fossil dough. The guests can take them home in plastic bags. Let dry for 3-4 days before handling.

3. The Excavator—Mix Plaster of Paris and add to old plastic containers or paper milk cartons. Insert dinosaur toys to be excavated and let dry overnight (or per directions). Let kids use small hammers to chip away and discover what is inside. Don’t forget eye protection!

GAMES: 1. Cave People Stomp—Blow up balloons and attach them to paper plates with tape to hold them in place. You can add faces, crazy yarn hair or paper arms to make them look like cave people. On go, the dinosaurs try to stomp as many cave people as they can. Add a slip of paper inside each balloon so the boys can collect them for a prize. Optional: Make dinosaur feet out of cardboard ahead of time and tie them to the players’ shoes before they stomp.

2. Hungry Dinosaurs—For this game, you will need a skateboard for every two players, oven mitts (sets are available at the dollar store) and a gross of bouncing balls (Oriental Trading).

The players team up with one boy on the skateboard on his belly and the other boy behind him holding his feet like a wheel8 WNY Family January 2026

barrow. The balls are placed on the ground in the middle of the room. The player on the skateboard puts the oven mitts on. On go, the teams will go back and forth into the circle trying to collect as many balls as they can get. When your hands are full, come back to empty them into a bowl before going back in again. Play the game twice so each boy gets to be the dinosaur.

3. Hot lava—Put red plastic tablecloths on the floor. Set up an obstacle course made of bricks, stools, pillows, etc. The boys can climb, step and jump on the items, but cannot step on the hot lava. You can play again by using only flat papers to step on and have the boys play in teams—one is blindfolded while the other gives directions to help his partner through to safety.

FOOD: 1. Chicken (baby pterodactyl) legs or wings are a real crowd pleaser for caveboys! You can make your own, order take out or prepare frozen ones.

2. Mini nacho volcanos—Use a 12-oz. brown paper cup (Amazon has coffee cups that will work great) and cut off the bottom half inch. Place the bottom side up and insert a 5-oz. plastic snack cup inside. Fill the cup with red salsa or nacho cheese and spill some over the edge of the volcano. Serve on an individual dish surrounded by dinosaur scales (chips).

3. Lava cake—Make your favorite chocolate cupcake recipe as directed.

Allow cupcakes to cool. Using a paring knife, cut out the center about halfway into the cupcake preserving the centerpiece. Fill with hot fudge sauce or Nutella (mixed 4:1 with milk). Replace the top and cover the cupcake with piped red icing.

4. Dino Juice—The easiest version of this is to buy Hawaiian Punch Green Berry Rush flavor. However, Pinterest is full of ideas for making your own green punch.

How to Host an Allergy-Safe Birthday Party t’s Birthday party time!

You’ve planned the games, chosen a cake and shopped for party favors. Then it comes—an RSVP from a classmate with an allergy. According to FARE (Food Allergy Research & Education), 1 in 13 kids have a food allergy.

What’s the best way to accommodate this guest and still plan the perfect party? Don’t panic. Parents of kids with food allergies want party hosts to know they don’t expect the whole event to revolve around accommodating their child. Here are their tips for creating a fun, safe party for all without it becoming a burden.

THE MOST SUPPORTIVE THING HOSTS CAN DO Moms of kids with food allergies agree the best way to make them feel at ease is to inquire about dietary restrictions when sending out the invitation. Jenn Williamson of San Diego, whose 11-year-old daughter has a peanut allergy says, “It lifts a weight and lets me know that the host is more approachable. I feel comfortable talking with those parents knowing they’re aware of food allergies and are open-minded about discussing it.”

Tiffany Hinton, Chicago mom to three girls with severe food allergies and blogger of Gluten Free Mom Certified, says, “When someone asks if there are any food restrictions, it allows me to be an advocate for my children, share information to dispel myths and help keep them safe.”

BEFORE THE PARTY Kids with food allergies are individuals and each family is unique. Be open to communication. Know that parents are grateful for any effort made to include their kids.

After sending invitations, expect contact from parents of a child with allergies. A phone call or conversation in person best

facilitates clear communication. They may ask what foods you’ll be serving, how the cake will be decorated and if there will be games that include food items (such as a piñata). This lets them know ahead of time what may need to be modified.

My daughter has celiac disease and eats only gluten-free foods. With pizza and cake as standard party fare, parties pose a challenge. I usually provide a snack bag with foods that are safe replacements for her. I can even decorate a fancy cupcake to fit the party theme. It helps my daughter feel included and she gets excited for the party when decorating with me. Since one crumb can make her sick for weeks, I prefer to do the baking to make parties fun and safe for her.

Susan Lemus, a La Mesa resident whose children have a dairy allergy, recounts a time when a conversation with a party host helped tremendously. The original plan was to take the girls for ice cream sundaes after a movie and provide a special cookie for Lemus’ daughter. “I don’t want to make it hard on the parents. I really want my kids to feel just like everyone else.”

After speaking to Susan, the host better understood where Susan was coming from. She took the girls for sorbet so everyone could enjoy the same experience.

PARTY DAY 1.

When a food-allergic guest arrives, review how you’ll handle food safety. Even kids who are old enough to be dropped off need this reassurance.

Make sure you understand the child’s needs or ask the parent for clarification. If it puts you more at ease, ask parents to stick around.

A Hidden Gem for Luxury Travelers S

ometimes, you need an escape that feels like a dream—a place where luxury meets nature, where every detail is carefully curated to make you feel special. I found what I was looking for the moment we pulled up to the gate at Winvian. This stunning retreat tucked in the woodsy hills of Litchfield County, Connecticut, offered the perfect blend of indulgence, tranquility, and adventure.

A GRAND WELCOME: FIRST IMPRESSIONS OF WINVIAN FARM Met by name at the car, the staff led my husband and me into the historic building to relax by the fireplace and enjoy a drink while checking us in. Once everything was set, our guest assistant, Ilaria, led us to our cottage on the 113-acre property. While Winvian is steeped in history, dating back to the late 18th century, it feels effortlessly modern in its approach to hospitality. The estate, still owned by the Smith family, has been transformed into an exclusive getaway, where every corner whispers elegance and charm.

EXPLORING WINVIAN’S UNIQUE COTTAGES One of the most extraordinary aspects of Winvian is its collection of 18 uniquely designed cottages, each with its own theme and story. We stayed in Camping Cottage, and let me tell you—this was no ordinary camping trip. The moment we walked in, we were greeted by a glowing fire, an arched ceiling painted to look like the changing sky, and floor-to-ceiling windows framed with faux trees to make you feel like you’re outdoors. It was the most luxurious space we’ve ever stayed in.

A highlight of Winvian is the unique cottages you can choose from. Each one was designed by a different architect with a theme to reflect its unique feel. The Woodland Cottage has a natural stone waterfall, a sunken tub, and a warm wood interior that connects you Camping Cottage with the surrounding woods. The Golf Cottage offers a different luxury experience, with golf-inspired details and a putting area. Each 950-1,250 square foot cottage offers unforgettable lodging, but one is particularly surprising.

Helicopter Cottage does more than bring in aviation details; it brings in a fully restored 1968 Sikorsky HH37 Sea King Pelican helicopter. As we toured the cottages, we were shocked to walk into the large building and see the helicopter seamlessly incorporated into the space.

The interior of the chopper houses a bar, a pull-out couch, and an entertainment area. We couldn’t resist climbing into the cockpit to explore all of the buttons and levers. It’s no surprise this cottage is a favorite for families.

Hearing about great food and experiencing it are two different things. As my husband and I arrived for our dinner reservation, we were ushered through a maze of upstairs rooms in the historic heart of the property. Settled by a crackling wood fireplace, we enjoyed the simple elegance of the main restaurant.

The four-course meal was luxurious with seasonal ingredients, many of which were harvested on-site. Every bite was a masterpiece: silky, house-made pasta, Seared beef perfectly seared beef that melted in my mouth, desserts crafted by the in-house pastry chef, and stunningly plated extras that were as beautiful as they were delicious.

If you’re looking for a more casual lunch, dinner, or just a drink, Maggie’s Tavern is the spot. The large wood fireplace and leather sofas invite you to relax while the shuffleboard table begs you to have a little fun. Whether you sit at the bar or outside on the stone terrace, the food and drinks will be just as exceptional as the atmosphere.

In the morning, we enjoyed breakfast alongside a sunny window overlooking the property. Greeted with coffee, tea, and homemade treats like chocolate croissants and banana bread, we chose multiple things to try from the menu, each one adding to the exquisite dining experience.

HOW TO KEEP PARTY FOOD SAFE Instead of big bowls of chips and pretzels that invite crosscontamination (a problem for kids with nut and gluten allergies), use individually wrapped bags. One of the kindest things a friend did was set up a table at her daughter’s party that included only gluten-free foods. My daughter could safely eat anything at the party and I didn’t worry about cross-contamination.

Allow party guests to use the kitchen to prepare food they brought. Include non-food items as prizes and party favors.

While celebrating with friends is lots of fun, parties can be a real challenge for parents of kids with allergies. Going the extra mile to create a normal party experience for their children is a gift of kindness that is greatly appreciated.

Detroit, Michigan

D

etroit, Michigan’s largest city, is a community on the upswing and new energy and renewal is everywhere. It is still called the Motor City for putting the world on wheels.

This is a city with French roots. It was established in 1701 by a French military leader and later even compared to Paris for its great beauty. “The Paris of the Midwest” was its nickname thanks to its architecture and grand avenues.

It made the New York Times “52 Places to Go list for 2025.” The city’s Little Village also made it onto Time Magazine’s list of “The World’s Greatest Places of 2025.” And Travel & Leisure named the city in “The 50 Best Places to Travel in 2025.”

It is a very drivable destination for Western New Yorkers—about four and half hours for the trip from Buffalo. Like Buffalo it is border city on a river with Windsor, Ontario just across the Detroit River. Interestingly, Windsor is due south from Detroit and to get to Canada, you drive south.

Early this year the $5 billion 1.5mile Gordie Howe International Bridge will open improving traffic and connections between Detroit and Windsor. It is named after the famed Canadian hockey player who took the Detroit Red Wings

to four Stanley Cup championships.

It features six lanes for vehicle traffic and a free 12-foot-wide path for pedestrians and cyclists. The construction project was financed by the Canadian government and Canada will collect the tolls.

Last October, the 22-acre Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Centennial Park opened along the city’s riverfront. It features a play area, a water garden, a Sport House and scenic, tree-lined paths. It is designed to inspire play, wellness and connection.

This summer, part of Buffalo’s 100acre Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. waterfront park will open. The parks celebrate the legacy of Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. in the communities he loved—his Detroit birthplace and Buffalo, the home of his Buffalo Bills.

Detroit is a big-time passionate sports town with three downtown sports arenas hosting four professional sports teams: Detroit Lions (football), the Detroit Tigers (baseball), the Detroit Red Wings (hockey) and the Detroit Pistons (basketball). The University of Michigan Wolverines regularly rank near the top of the Big Ten Conference and game sellouts exceeding 100,000 at home games testify to their popularity.

including a Ferris wheel with giant baseball shape cars, a tiger themed carousel, batting cages, and life-sized sculptures of Ty Cobb and other famous players.

Kids 14 and under can ride the carousel and Ferris wheel for free on Sundays and those four to 14 can run the bases after Sunday home games.

The Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation is a must see and an exploration of genius in all its forms. It is considered one of the most expansive automotivecentric experiences in the museum world. There are more than 100 vehicles on display, and the exhibit explains how the invention of the automobile changed our everyday lives.

Ford gained early fame as the inventor of the Model T and the assembly line. By 1918, half the cars in the United States were Model Ts. During the next two decades nearly 17 million of them were sold at a price within reach of the average American family. He had doubled the daily pay for his auto workers and priced his cars so that his employees could afford to buy them.

Travel up to the observation deck for sweeping views of the historic Rouge Complex. Step into the elevated plant walkway for a look at where the legendary Ford F-150 is assembled.

Speaking of his recreated village, Ford said: “When we are through, we shall have reproduced American life as lived; and that, I think, is the best way of preserving at least a part of our history and tradition.”

Visitors to the Ford Piquette Avenue Plant can walk the floors where the iconic Model T was first assembled. It is now a museum with a rich collection of historic cars over three floors. Volunteers are on hand to tell the stories behind the cars.

Here we learn why there is U.S. paper money on display. Ford paid his employees in cash including an unusual looking authentic $5 bill with a dog on it along with a couple and a babe in arms.

The Jackson House, the newest acquisition for the village, will open later this year. It was the Selma, Alabama home of Dr. and Mrs. Sullivan Jackson and served as a safe haven where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and others worked and planned the Selma to Montgomery marches of 1965. The marches served to protest the racist policies within the South and raised awareness of the struggles Black voters faced.

A few blocks from our downtown hotel, I discovered the gem that is Campus Martius Park. It was voted No. 1 “Top Public Square in the U.S.” by USA Today readers. It is a Detroit treasure and a national and international destination.

From May through October there is an actual beach here complete with 400,000 pounds of soft sand, lounge

chairs and palm trees in the heart of downtown. There are also live music programs and a restaurant. The ice rink is open daily from November through March and has welcomed top Olympic skaters.

Detroit historians agree that nothing symbolizes the city’s grand rise, spectacular fall and its incredible rebound like Michigan Central Station.

When it opened in 1914 it was the tallest train station in the world and at its peak 4,000 riders a day used the station. After 75 years it was abandoned and escaped demolition, but vandals stole everything of value and graffiti was everywhere. Hundreds of windows were broken.

Then in 2018, Ford Motor Company bought one of the country’s most notorious vacant eyesores and a drug den. The $1 billion six-year renovation involved more than 3,000 construction workers and required removing millions of gallons of rainwater, reopening a

Gentle Parenting Goals for the Year Ahead

K

nowing how to start the New Year off right, can sometimes feel like a whole lot of pressure.

We know the things we should do. We know the new habits we should form. Heck, we know we’ll feel better if we just do the right thing. The hard part about that though, is not feeling like a failure if things don’t get done. So, how do we start the year off right, not just for ourselves but for our kiddos?

Setting gentle and realistic parenting goals is a good place to start. That might look like mapping out one attainable goal for each month. Or it might look like a handful of bigger goals spread out over the next 12 months. Either way, setting goals is a roadmap for getting things done and these seven tips will help you get there.

1. Grab a piece of paper and pen. At the top of the paper write ‘Bucket List.’ Now, I want you to write down everything you want to get done this year (even if it feels unattainable).

Once you have your list, go ahead and rank them in order of importance with one being the most important, two being the next, and so on.

2. Look at your list and think about which one(s) could be done over which month(s). For example, I want to take my kids on a beach vacation this year so I’ve marked January as the month when I will start researching air bed and breakfasts and June as the month when we’ll go. Getting my goal of researching places in January, will motivate and excite me to book things for June.

3. If your goals are more in line with cleaning out your kids’ closets or organizing the garage, break it up into smaller tasks. Maybe you start sorting through things in February with plans of having items tagged and ready to go for your neighborhood’s annual garage sale which is every year in May. Mapping goals out in this way provides a gentler approach to getting things done.

4. One of my goals last year was to spend more quality time with my kids. Big task but hard to do during a season when I was uber-focused on getting my doctoral dissertation finished.

I felt overwhelmed and guilty many times when I would have to say no to something with my kids, to say yes to a deadline. I reminded myself this was only for a season and focused on the smaller things I could do with them that provided us with more one-on-one time. Errands such as asking my middle daughter to tag along with me when I would pick her brother up from his work, allowed alone time for her and I to catch up on all the important things going on in Junior High. When I saw how meaningful these moments were, I became more intentional about carving out specific opportunities where I could talk oneon-one with each kid.

5. An exciting (albeit nerve-wracking) parenting goal this year is to help teach my daughter how to drive. She’ll be 15 this fall and she has been begging me at every empty parking lot to please pull over so that she can practice. I put it off last year and so this year, I intend to leave for places a little bit earlier or give

myself time on the way home to allow time for her to work on this.

6. A fun and unique way to check off my parenting goals

is to put my list of things I want to do somewhere I can see it.

Since this is more personal to me and not something I necessarily need everyone in my family to hold me accountable for, I’ve opted to fold up my piece of paper I have things written on and slide it in between the pages of my daily planner—a space I am in every day with my stickers and pens.

7. Oftentimes we feel major guilt and can be hard on our-

selves when things don’t go the way we’d planned; especially when it comes to parenting goals. One of the kindest things we can do for ourselves, and our families, is to enter this year with gratitude and grace as we map out what we want 2026 to look like.

Here’s a peak at my calendar to show you what I mean:

January—Research places to stay at the beach for the

month of June.

February

— Work on affirmative messenger hearts to tape on kids’ doors for Valentine’s Day.

March

—Research places to stay for my graduation and ask for kids’ help to find things to do so we can explore the area.

April—Take each kid on a date this month.

May—Attend doctoral graduation and bring kids with me!

June—Beach with kids.

July—Try to go to the neighborhood pool at least one day each week.

August—Back to school shopping with the kids.

September—Find a movie to take the kids to.

October—Kids will be with their dad for Halloween,

so I am going to offer to throw a Halloween party for them and their friends prior to the holiday.

November—Invite kids to help decorate for Thanksgiving. Go to a craft store and let them each pick out something to work on (crocheting, painting, model-building).

December—Visit at least two Christmas light displays.

You can make these goals as detailed or as vague as you would like. I left mine pretty simple to allow for flexibility if things didn’t work out for one month or if I changed my mind about what that month’s goal is. Gentle parenting goals should be fun and something you and your kids enjoy doing.

6 Family New Year’s Resolutions Backed by Science

T

he promise of new possibilities emerges with the coming of a new year. In addition to personal goals, many parents set family resolutions. After all, most of us consider the health and happiness of our family as important as our own. Because families function as a unit, it makes sense to set a few resolutions for everyone under your roof.

Although the success rate for resolutions can be discouraging, experts say that they can stick if they are simple, carefully chosen, and realistic. Below are easy, enjoyable family resolutions that offer huge, scientifically-proven familial rewards with little effort.

1. MAXIMIZE FAMILY

TIME BY RECLAIMING DOWNTIME A recent study showed that the average family spends around 37 minutes of quality time together on weekdays.

Fortunately, it’s possible to increase these minutes by hacking our downtime.

Consider this: Many people spend an average of three hours per day on social media, television, or the internet.

Therefore, time available for meaningful family bonding is lost in front of screens.

Be deliberate with evenings, weekends, and downtime. Don’t let these minutes slip away.

2. EAT HEALTHY MEALS TOGETHER AS OFTEN AS POSSIBLE

Eating meals as a family saves money, boosts health, and provides behavioral benefits for children.

A study published in the Journal of Adolescent Health found that adolescents who dined with their families less than three times per week were more likely to participate in risky behaviors like drugs, alcohol, and smoking.

And experts at Stanford Children’s Health found that younger children who regularly eat with their parents are more confident and connected. Even busy families can find time to break bread together. Grab-and-go grocery store options, crockpot meals, or made-ahead casseroles mean that gathering as a family is feasible, even on hectic nights.

3. PRIORITIZE FAMILY GAME NIGHT

Although it can be challenging to pry kids away from electronics, a family game night is an easy way to foster a face-to-face connection. This simple, inexpensive ritual yields huge benefits, like improved academic performance, enhanced motor skills, and increased sportsmanship.

Researchers from Carnegie Mellon found that playing academic games improves classroom performance. And the University of Florida found that kids

who use strategy with their parents have better memory and problem-solving skills outside of family life.

To ensure enthusiastic participation, turn off electronics and choose games that are suitable for everyone. If you have a multi-age family, pair up younger kids with older siblings and alternate easy games with harder ones. Take turns choosing games and regularly add new options to the rotation.

4. REGULARLY READ TO (OR WITH) YOUR KIDS

Countless studies confirm the benefits of reading to children. Experts say that children who have regular exposure to books enjoy lasting academic and social benefits. Specifically, when a parent reads even one book per day to a child, it exposes them to 290,000 additional words by kindergarten.

Even better, reading to your child at bedtime makes him much more likely to take the initiative to read on his own.

Adolescents who are regular readers have higher levels of empathy and exhibit fewer risky behaviors.

Regardless of age, many kids need a parent’s ongoing encouragement. Studies have shown a large decline in reading at around the 4th grade. Not so coincidentally, this is when many parents assume that reading is a school-day activity.

If your child will no longer read with you, discuss the books you’re both reading. Or listen to audiobooks together on the way to school. Making books an ongoing priority will encourage lifelong intellectual curiosity.

5. SPEND MORE TIME OUTSIDE

A recent study revealed that the majority of adults list their fondest childhood memories as experiences that happened outdoors.

Playing outside with friends and visiting the ocean or seashore were among the most popular responses. Yet, today’s children spend more time indoors than any generation before them. According to the National Recre-

ation and Park Association, American children spend four to seven minutes per day on outdoor play, while many spend up to seven hours in front of electronic screens.

It’s less challenging to get children outside if you make it a family activity.

Go for a family walk after dinner. Play flag football in the backyard, or head for the neighborhood park.

You’ll be rewarded with significant benefits such as increased immunity, enhanced cognitive and social development, and increased attention span.

6. PRIORITIZE CIVILITY A survey of more than 1,000 participants found that 94 percent of respondents believed that civility is in a sharp, detrimental decline. The current climate of incivility is impossible to ignore. We see it in news coverage, on social media, and during our everyday activities.

Bullying, lying, cheating, and showing a lack of empathy are all common forms of incivility. Thankfully, children learn acceptable behavior by watching their parents. They are always observing how we talk, how we behave, and how we treat one another.

Therefore, it is possible to create a culture of respect in our own homes. We can demonstrate how to disagree with positivity, stress the importance of kindness and empathy, and insist that all family members treat others with dignity and respect. Additionally, kids who witness their parents prioritizing civility are better protected from societal stress, which can harm their health and their sense of well-being.

None of these resolutions requires large amounts of time, effort, or money, but they are all worth trying. January may be a good time to begin, but quality family time is important all year long.

4 Tips for Fitting Family Time Into Regular Routines We all know that family time is vitally important, but how do we squeeze it into those weeknights when work runs late, or school obligations beckon? We safeguard those minutes and then figure out how to make everyday events family time. Here are a few suggestions: Say No to Non-Essentials: It’s so easy for what little free time we do have to get filled with requests from work, school, or other obligations. While it would be nice if we could accommodate every request, doing so takes valuable time away from our families.

Learn to graciously say no to requests that don’t truly matter so that you can say yes to what does.

Watch High-Quality Media Together: It’s probably unrealistic to banish all screen time from your routine, but you can maximize it by finding regular, high-quality, or educational programs that you can enjoy as a family.

Use this as a time to talk about your own life experiences or lessons that come up during the show.

Involve Kids in Meal Prep and Chores: There is no way around making dinner and tidying up, but you can turn this into family time if you allow your kids to participate. Admittedly, the chores may take a little longer and require more patience when your children are involved. But you can teach them valuable life skills, encourage a work ethic, and have the chance to talk to them about their day. Even better, children often feel a deep sense of pride when contributing to family life.

Find A Family Hobby: Shared hobbies are a great way to build memories and spend quality time with your kids. Consider activities like geocaching, horseback riding, camping, stamp collecting, model building, or martial arts. If your child is already passionate about a hobby, ask her to teach it to you.

Sharing in this way will make her feel valued, while you will feel included.

The review of “the ones that almost got away.” This year I am doing this a bit differently. I want to celebrate 2 local authors and their wonderful 2025 publications.

Our first author is Mary C. Kerins, a retired school administrator and a resident of Niagara Falls. It is obvious in her work that she celebrates the gift of family and friends and the joy of reading. Her first book of the year, The Cottage (Miriam Laundry Publishing, St. Catharines, 2025, $19.60) illustrated

by Luna Stella D., is a walk down memory lane for a family that spends time at the cottage at the lake every summer. The annual tradition they have come to know and enjoy speaks to the joy and connection between grandparents and grandchildren. Fishing challenges, swimming at the beach, building sandcastles, skipping stones, picnics, evening campfires, and roasting marshmallows can only be topped by the wildlife that surrounds them. For those that have had such special times, and those who wish they did, this is truly a love letter to cherished family traditions.

This is another homage to family traditions.

Papa sets the stage for baking when everyone dons their aprons and baking hats. Then the celebration is truly on as sugar cookies are mixed and baked for Santa’s visit. Once they are decorated, it is time to dress for bed in matching pajamas as the whole family sets the table for Santa and his reindeer. As the family wakes to the Christmas surprises under the trees, we feel that we have been invited into the Christmas magic that this family celebrates every year.

by Marionna Cabassa. This book, published in a series called Books for a Better Earth, explores a brief history of air pollution starting with the global impact of eruption of the volcano Krakatoa. She continues to share the effects of the Dust Bowl and smog. Air pollution also impacts how seeds, scent, and sound travel through it. Air connects all of us even if we are thousands of miles away from the pollution source. At the end of the book, Dee enlightens and reassures us that we can do things to help improve air quality across the globe.

As she states, “Everything is connected, and we all share the same air.”

As we begin 2026, we can be sure that there will be more inspiring books by local authors like these. This January, let’s celebrate our neighbors that inspire us with their words and make us proud.

A New Year and a Whole Set of New Parenting Lessons

O

ne of the first parenting lessons I ever learned was that the Margarita dispenser looked a lot like the ice water dispenser.

One should be put in a sippy cup, and one should not. And if you’re not sure which is which, choose a restaurant with better lighting.

There were a lot more lessons in the first year of my daughter’s life. Enough so that my wife and I made up rules.

1. No arguing after 11pm during

the newborn stage because you’re both psychotic.

2. If a diaper fails from user

install, the person who last changed the diaper is responsible for the reinstall.

3. Any social engagement must

take place before or after naptime. No exceptions.

That’s how we lived for the first couple of years and then had our second child. And with our third, it was a way of life. But then the children started truly growing up.

That’s the problem with children.

They make your expertise obsolete once you really feel like you know what you’re doing, and the skills you have acquired are no longer transferable.

By the time the kids reach school age, you’ve got to learn everything all over from scratch. You navigate the PTA and find out who the cliquey parents are and how to get unnoticed by them for fear of their passive-aggressive drama.

how to make aged treasure maps by spilling old coffee on paper and letting it dry. And now you no longer stay up past 11pm.

And again, a new year rolls around.

You’re a seasoned parent now. You know things.

As a bald man, I can fight lice without worry. I’m as slick as an Olympic swimmer, bring it on. My hair buns are so tight it’s like my daughter had a facelift. I have trained three people how to pee in the toilet. I got this.

So anyway, emotions and anxiety kick in. Your lice knowledge is useless, and you’re back on the bottom. You learn to actively listen and not offer advice because you learned that one of the best things you could do was to let them vent.

More years, and more old knowledge. By high school, it’s a whole different level. It’s like a crash course in college calculus. Dating lessons, how to deal with your first boss, always keep a 20 in your wallet just in case.

Parenting doesn’t get easier the older they get. That age-old lesson is just what we tell ourselves, so we keep going in the toddler years. It just gets different.

Parenting becomes a lot less physical but a lot more emotional. Both yours and theirs as you try and find new footing.

You crave conversation and to be let into their world from the very people who once couldn’t stop talking.

And you learn that it’s ok, and the best thing to do is to quietly exist in the same space as them. You talk about

3. Don’t go looking for vampires at night.

It’s really common sense.

But in these moments, I learned that if I was quiet and just let her exist, she would want me in her world. I learned that she had anxiety and was worried at times. I learned that she put way too much pressure on herself, and that a lot of people asked too much of her. I learned that sometimes it’s best to just share her emotion rather than to explain it.

I have done the same with my sons.

My second-born and I watch Marvel movies and exist together. My youngest and I raised a turtle together and are starting to get into Broadway Musicals.

I will exist with them.

Until I can’t, and every lesson I’ve learned as a parent is null and void. My oldest is now in college, and she just left after coming home from Thanksgiving break. She is off to exist in a world without me, and I have to learn how to be without her. It’s better for both of us.

But please, daughter of mine, remember that the Margarita dispenser can look a lot like the water dispenser.

Do what you want with that information.

HOW TO HELP YOUR CHILD LEARN TO READ

P

arents: As everyone knows, there is no skill that is more important to success in school than reading. If children are not reading on grade level by fourth grade, it is a likely sign that they are going to struggle in later grades. Fortunately, there are ways that parents can help their children get off to a good start in picking up this skill as well as supporting their acquisition of reading skills in elementary school and beyond. Learning to read is not a simple process. Unlike walking and talking, it must be taught. It doesn’t just happen. In the United States, formal instruction typically begins in kindergarten so most children are about five years old. In other countries, namely some Scandinavian ones, reading instruction doesn’t typically begin until children turn seven.

The Steps Involved in Learning to Read: There is a definite order to the skills children must master to ultimately become readers. Unfortunately, not all children are ready biologically at the same time as well as those struggling with dyslexia. Both will need special intensive early instruction to become readers.

1. Phonemic Awareness: It all starts with the development of an awareness that speech can be broken down into small sounds called phonemes. It is understanding that the word “bat” can be broken down into three sounds.

2. Phonics: This refers to the knowledge of letter sounds. In English, 30 WNY Family January 2026

there are 26 letters that are used to represent the 44 sounds of our language. Most schools will use a formal phonics program to teach students the letter sounds so they can read words. These first two steps are absolutely essential for students to master if they are to become readers. How fast children pick up these skills shows how ready they are to become readers. Research has shown that the best way parents can foster these first two skills is by reading to them.

3. Fluency: To be described as readers, children must be able to read fluently which means they are able to read accurately, at a conversational pace, with appropriate expression. They are able to identify words automatically. In other words, their oral reading will sound like the spoken word. For most children, this skill will develop at ages seven to eight.

4. Vocabulary: Children’s vocabulary is all the words that they understand.

Having a strong vocabulary is absolutely essential for the final reading skill step which is comprehension.

5. Comprehension: This is the ultimate goal of reading for children—understanding what they have read.

HOW PARENTS CAN START HELPING THEIR CHILDREN BECOME READERS Starting out with Your Babies: It’s never too soon to introduce your children to books. As soon as appropriate, let them look at and touch pictures in soft-covered books and turn the pages

as you read to them. Begin the habit of reading to them every day which you should continue into their middle-school years.

Toddlers: Start a library of ageappropriate books for your children.

Let them choose what you read to them.

Have them point to pictures of things in the books that you name. Make it fun for them by using different voices.

Preschoolers: Read and talk about words on signs like “stop” and “McDonald’s.” Show them that words are read from left to right. Ask them to retell stories. Introduce them to words that rhyme. You can challenge them by asking: Do “bat” and “cat” sound alike?

Be sure to read nursery rhymes to them.

Start teaching the letters of the alphabet, especially those in their names. Also, help them match sound to some letters.

Make going to the library a regular part of their lives.

Elementary School: The larger your children’s vocabulary, the better the readers they will become. Talk and talk some more to them about a wide variety of things. Take them to a variety of places so they can learn new words. Ride trains and buses, visit state capitols, historic homes, and monuments—all will expand their vocabularies. If they show any signs of difficulty in picking up early reading skills, consult at once with their teachers about what can be done to help them.

Middle School and High School: Encourage your children to increase their reading skills by taking advantage of such online activities as playing word games, listening to podcasts on a variety of subjects, and working with vocabulary apps. And viewing certain movies and television shows can also increase their vocabulary. And be sure to share your enthusiasm about what you are reading to them, it can be contagious and inspire them to read more.

Stop Managing Minutes, Start Curating Life: The Intentional Family’s Guide to Tech

t’s a typical weeknight. Dinner is over, the dishes are piling up, and a strange quiet fills the living room. It’s not the peaceful quiet of resting; it’s the focused hum of everyone staring at their brightly lit devices.

You’re quickly checking work emails.

Your older child is furiously texting friends. Your youngest is lost in a video game. We are all here, physically close, yet our minds are spread out across the digital universe.

We’ve all experienced this. As parents today, we often feel like we have to choose between two extremes regarding technology: either it’s totally good or entirely bad. We get obsessed with tracking “screen time,” setting strict limits and feeling terrible when we go over them. But focusing only on minutes doesn’t solve the real problem. The issue isn’t just how long we use screens; it’s the digital clutter that breaks our focus and weakens our family connections.

To take back our family time, we need to move past simple time limits and adopt a strategy called “digital minimalism.” This doesn’t mean getting rid of all technology. It means purposely removing the low value digital noise so

we have space for what truly matters: genuine connection, being creative, and resting deeply.

CHANGING HOW WE VIEW TECHNOLOGY The first step in using technology less is to change the way we think about it. We need to stop treating all screen use as the same. Think about food: 100 calories of healthy vegetables affects your body differently than 100 calories of candy. The same rule applies to our digital habits.

HighValue Technology Use: This is tech that supports our goals and values. Examples include a family movie night, video calling grandparents who live far away, or your child using an app to learn a new skill like coding.

LowValue Technology Use: This is the aimless scrolling through social media, reading non-stop depressing news (“doom scrolling”), or letting autoplaying videos keep our kids passive and unengaged.

Digital minimalism asks us to keep the high value tech and get rid of the low value noise. We must ask ourselves this

key question: Does this app, game, or device add real value to our family life, or is it simply stealing our attention?

By seeing the difference, we can stop simply policing minutes and start choosing better experiences.

THE BIG DIGITAL CLEANUP Once we know what the clutter is, it’s time to clean house. Device makers use clever design tricks—like bright colors and random rewards—to make apps addictive. To fight back, we need to make our devices less distracting.

Check Notifications: Go through all your notifications and turn off any that don’t come from an actual person.

You don’t need an instant alert that a new podcast is out or a game has a special offer. These tiny interruptions pull our minds away from the present moment.

Delete Apps: Think about checking social media only on a computer. This extra step (called friction) can stop the unconscious habit of pulling out your phone every time you stop or have a continued on page 32 January 2026 WNY Family 31

FILLING THE EMPTY SPACE WITH QUALITY TIME

SETTING TECHFREE SPACES AND ROUTINES One of the best ways to reduce feeling overwhelmed by technology is to set up clear physical and time boundaries. We need places in our homes and certain times of the day that are strictly tech-free.

The Dinner Table: Make the dinner table a sacred, no-phone zone. This is often the only time families gather to talk. Even if a phone is turned over on the table, studies show it makes people have less meaningful conversations. Leave all phones in another room.

The Bedroom: Screens mess up our sleep cycles due to the blue light they emit, and the temptation to scroll late at night is too strong. Create a main “charging station” in a shared space like the kitchen or hallway. All devices go there to “sleep” an hour before bedtime. This ritual improves sleep and signals that the day’s digital demands are over.

BE THE ROLE MODEL YOU WANT TO SEE This part is often the hardest. We can’t expect our children to have a healthy relationship with technology if we are always glued to our own devices. Kids learn by watching us. If they see us checking work emails during their sports game or scrolling through social media while they are telling a story, they learn that the phone is more important than the person in front of them.

To handle this, try “narrating your tech use.” When you pick up your phone in front of your child, simply say aloud what you are doing: “I’m quickly checking the bus schedule,” or “I’m sending a fast text to a neighbor about the meeting.”

This simple act helps in two ways: it makes you stop and think before aimless scrolling, and it teaches your children that the phone is a specific tool for a task, not something we rely on for constant entertainment.

When you remove the digital clutter, you or your children might feel something uncomfortable: boredom. In our hyperconnected world, we’ve forgotten how to be bored, but boredom is where creativity and self-discovery begin.

Digital minimalism isn’t just about taking things away; it’s about adding better things back in. We must replace passive screen time with active, high-quality leisure. This takes more effort than just flipping on the TV, but the rewards are much greater.

Keep your home stocked with nondigital options.

Make sure board games are easy to access, art supplies are out on the table, and books are everywhere.

Get outdoors. A walk in a park or spending time outside engages your senses in ways a screen never can. I know, I know…it’s winter right now. The days that aren’t frigid are still worth getting outdoors on.

You will probably hear “I’m bored!” when the screens go off. Instead of rushing to solve their boredom, encourage them.

Say, “It’s okay to be bored. I wonder what you will create to do next.” Eventually, their brains will stop craving the instant gratification of the screen and start engaging with the real world around them.

THE LONG-TERM GOAL OF CONNECTION Adopting digital minimalism is not a quick fix; it is a constant effort. There will be days when you are too tired, and the iPad is the only way you can get dinner cooked. There will be times when you find yourself mindlessly scrolling again.

That is fine.

The goal is not to be perfect. The goal is to be intentional.

We are trying to create a family culture where technology works for us, not the other way around. We want to raise kids who can make eye contact, who can handle their own thoughts, and who value real experiences over online approval.

By cleaning out the digital clutter, we make room for the real, complex, and wonderful reality of family life. We are trading the shallow connections of likes and shares for the deep, lasting connection of shared laughter, full attention, and simply being present with each other. In a world constantly fighting for our attention, giving our full attention to our family is the most important and loving thing we can do.

Are Energy Drinks Safe for Kids?

P

erhaps you saw in the news recently that Panera was sued in connection with two deaths that were allegedly associated with a drink on their menu called Charged Lemonade. While there were likely special circumstances in those cases, it is, understandably, raising questions (again) about the safety of energy drinks.

It’s important to understand that energy drinks contain a lot of caffeine and, depending on age, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) either recommends no caffeine at all or a very limited amount. Read on for details.

WHAT’S ALL THE BUZZ ABOUT?

According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH), energy drinks are obviously meant to increase energy, but also claim to enhance mental alertness and physical performance.

Marketing of the $85 billion (in 2021) global energy drink industry and

widespread availability are partly to blame. Companies often report they don’t market to youth, but catchy slogans, attractive packaging and ads that feature top-performing athletes say otherwise. It’s no wonder that youth consume energy drinks with the hope of improved health, productivity and performance.

“Since the drinks are widely available, they seem perfectly acceptable,” says Nicole Cruz, a registered dietitian.

“The advertising is hypocritical and dangerous.” Cruz also points out the pressure young people feel to achieve in academics and extracurricular activities in order to be accepted into college.

ARE ENERGY DRINKS SAFE?

The safety of energy drinks depends on age, personal health and the amount of caffeine consumed.

• The Food and Drug Administration says healthy adults can safely consume 400 mg of caffeine a day.

• The AAP strongly discourages

any caffeine consumption for kids under the age of 12, citing concerns about the effects on developing neurologic and cardiovascular systems and the risk of physical dependence.

• The AAP says adolescents ages

12–18 should limit caffeine intake to less than 100 mg daily.

Cruz is concerned that there is easy access to an unregulated substance for such a susceptible group (young people who are coming into themselves and trying to achieve under pressure). “The decision-making part of their brains are still developing, and the effects are detrimental,” she says. She’s not alone in her concern. Other experts agree that energy drinks and youth are a bad combination. Some concerns include anxiety, hyperactivity, inattention, increased risk of weight gain, cavities, diabetes, poor sleep and heart health. continued on page 34 January 2026 WNY Family 33

Energy drink effects last up to eight hours, negatively impacting sleep, learning and memory. “Those who regularly rely on these drinks for energy end up more tired and exhausted,” says Cruz. “When used as a pick-me-up, energy drinks can become part of a habitual cycle that can lead to irritability and anxiety.” As most people know, poor sleep also weakens the body’s immune system.

According to NCCIH, large amounts of caffeine may cause serious heart and blood vessel problems, such as heart rhythm disturbances and increases in heart rate and blood pressure.

HOW MUCH CAFFEINE DO ENERGY DRINKS CONTAIN?

Most energy shots and energy drinks contain 70 mg to 240 mg caffeine.

“There’s no requirement to include the amount of caffeine on [energy drink] labels, so the actual caffeine content may not be clear,” says Cruz. She points out that some energy drinks also add guarana (a plant extract containing a high concentration of caffeine) and stimulants like ginseng and green tea to intensify effects and make them last longer. ARE THERE AGE LIMITS ON PURCHASING ENERGY DRINKS?

There are no federal age requirements to buy energy drinks in the U.S., but some areas have implemented their own local restrictions. For example, in Suffolk County (NY) selling energy drinks to individuals under 18 is prohibited. In addition, grassroots bills have sprung up in multiple states following high profile teen deaths associated with consumption of energy drinks.

NOTE: MIXING ENERGY DRINKS WITH ALCOHOL

The Centers for Disease Control reports that people ages 15–23 who mix energy drinks with alcohol are four times more likely to binge drink at high intensity (consume six or more drinks per episode) than those who do not mix energy drinks with alcohol. And contrary to popular belief, consuming energy drinks does not “sober you up” or reduce impairment from alcohol consumption.

WHAT PARENTS CAN DO

• Using reliable sources, become informed.

• If you have questions about the health of your kids, talk to your pediatrician.

• Encourage kids and other family members to hydrate with water.

• Most importantly, talk to your

kids, teens, college students and young adults about the potential health risks of energy drinks.

They may not know the recommended limitations.

t’s no great secret that sending the kids to college is expensive, and that it’s only getting pricier every year. Aside from personal savings, most parents rely on federal and state loans to cover the expenses.

The problem with loans, however, is that you eventually have to pay them back—and often with considerable interest. Here’s a list of some of the most important, alternative ways of paying for your kids’ college education.

You can deduct some of the money contributed from your taxes. You can set up auto-

These are backed by the federal government and offer tax benefits that can help lower your overall expenses.

Look into your kids’ eligibility for scholarships and grants because neither you nor your kids will have to repay any of the money awarded.

Contact the office of scholarships at the colleges where your kids have applied to learn what financial support is available. Most colleges offer scholarships and grants based on criteria such as students’ needs, academic

distinctions, athletic abilities, and career aspirations. Also look into scholarships and grants offered by local companies, civic organizations, and places of worship. There are many online tools that can help you in your search. Some of the most popular include BigFuture, Fastweb, RaiseMe, Scholarships.com, and Scholly.

FEDERAL WORKSTUDY PROGRAM Another potential source of funding is the federal work-study program.

Whether or not you decide to take out federal loans to pay for your kids’ education, fill out the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) application. On that application, your kids have the option to indicate that they are interested in working parttime while in college to help cover the costs of their education. ALTERNATIVE WAYS TO PAY FOR COLLEGE continued... government, and the rest by the college they attend. The work is typically on-campus but can also be with approved off-campus non-profit organizations or public agencies. For more information about this program, see Federal Work-Study Jobs Help Students Earn Money to Pay for College or Career School on the website of the U.S. Department of Education.

PART-TIME WORK If your kids don’t want to commit to the federal work-study program but would like to work part-time while in school, most colleges offer jobs on campus. Common jobs include working in food services, in the library, in athletic and recreation centers, and as resident assistants in dorms.

PAID INTERNSHIPS AND COOPERATIVE EDUCATION PROGRAMS Other, similar opportunities include paid internships and cooperative education programs. Contact the office of internships and career services at the colleges where your kids have applied to find out what is offered.

Unlike paid internships, which may or may not be related to students’ major, cooperative education programs are almost always directly related to their major or field of study. Most such programs have students alternate between classroom study and real-life work experience, are structured and formalized, and often last for a semester or a full year. The money they make during their placement can be used to cover tuition and other education expenses.

EMPLOYERSPONSORED TUITION ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS You and/or your partner’s workplace might have an employer-sponsored tuition assistance program.

Many organizations (especially private companies) have such programs where employees and/or their dependents can receive full or partial college tuition coverage.

MILITARY SERVICE PROGRAMS There are a variety of financial assistance programs for students who plan to join one of the branches of the military after graduation. One of the most popular programs is the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) program, which is offered at more than 1,700 colleges across the U.S. In exchange for covering college-related expenses in full, students attend offcampus military training and commit

to join the U.S. military for at least eight years after graduation. Other popular programs that pay college-related expenses either in full or in part include those administered by the National Guard and the National Reserve.

COMMUNITY COLLEGE OR STATE SCHOOL You can save money by having your kids start their post-secondary education at either a two-year community college or a four-year state college. The tuition at most two-year community colleges is significantly lower than at four-year colleges, and they often offer summer courses that students can take prior to transferring to a four-year college in the fall. Ensure the credits from those courses are fully transferable to your kids’ desired four-year college. A good question to ask both the community and state colleges is whether they have so-called articulation agreements.

hen Todd’s mother picked him up from school, she knew something was wrong.

Bullies often pick on children who they see as weak— children who are unable to take care of themselves.

“As a mother, I just know when he has had a bad day,” she added. Instead of her usual bubbly eight-yearold, her son was unusually quiet. Todd, being autistic, often had mood swings, but this was different.

With the rise of social media and the internet, children can be bullied right in their own homes. Parents may not be aware of this connection when a child has access to internet sites.

Thinking to herself that Todd needed time to process the event, she didn’t press the issue. Then, suddenly, he burst out crying, and tears started flowing.

“I didn’t do anything wrong,” he sobbed. “Why do they pick on me?”

Todd told his mother that some of the bigger boys had pulled his shoes off on the playground and thrown them over the fence. His teacher went around the gate and retrieved the shoes.

Children and youth who experience bullying may develop poor self-esteem. The world treats them differently. They see life as unfair. It’s a situation in which they have no control. Due to cognitive issues, autistic children and youth may not realize they are being bullied. They believe their peers are sincere, yet they are taken advantage of. Bullying may increase as these individuals move into inclusion in mainstream education and activities.

Research suggests that approximately 60-80% of individuals with autism experience bullying at some point in their lives.

Due to their vulnerability, autistic children and youth are often exposed to social mistreatment. Bullying is an issue for all children and youth. However, some parents are very concerned about what their children are having to endure. Children with autism experience abusive behavior from other students almost half the time. This compares with abused behavior by average adolescents about twice as often, according to the National Bullying Prevention Center.

Being excluded and bullied delays mental progress and cognitive growth. This creates a serious mental health risk and includes a link between bullying and suicide. According to the Kennedy Krieger Institute, suicidal thoughts may begin at a younger age. Parents report their children wanted to end their lives at 8 years or younger. WHAT CAN PARENTS DO? Keep the lines of communication open between yourself and your autistic child or youth. If you suspect your child is being bullied at school, talk with his/her teacher. Do you notice changes in your child’s personality? Do they seem withdrawn?

Are they stressed about normal situations? Do they have meltdowns often? Do they avoid socializing with friends they once enjoyed? Be aware of torn clothing. Check for bruises on their body. When they are in a relaxed situation, talk with your child.

Ask them if everything is alright. Listen and watch their emotions as they speak.

Parents need to stay in contact with the school’s social worker. Be visible at your child’s school. Show up for special events. Volunteer as a room parent. Bake cookies for holidays.

Let your child serve treats to other children in their room. Help your child make friends.

WHAT CAN TEACHERS DO? The child who is a bully is usually very insecure. They often have problems at home. Often, they are larger and stronger than the child who is being bullied.

Assigning a “buddy” to an autistic child may be one way to protect the child from being bullied. If the buddy is popular with the other children, he serves as a protector for the autistic child. Playground bullying may decrease if the child plays with his/her buddy.

Another positive idea is to give awards to children who need it most. Yes—even the bully, when you see a tiny bit of improvement. And especially to the autistic child when he follows instructions and makes good choices. Awards, given with their peers present, can change a negative child into a positive role model for others.

Educators who are trained to recognize bullying may be limited by the student’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP).

This can restrict their ability to provide personalized solutions.

One of the most effective ways to address bullying is peer intervention. Those who have been victims of bullying report that support from classmates, such as offering friendship and companionship or seeking adult assistance, was crucial in defining bullying situations.

f your baby was born with a birth defect, you might feel overwhelmed and unprepared.

But you’re not alone. There are many people and resources available to help you and your child.

WHAT ARE BIRTH DEFECTS? A birth defect (also called a congenital disorder or congenital anomaly) is a health problem that a baby is born with.

There are many different types of birth defects, and they can range from mild to severe.

Usually, the cause is not known.

Some birth defects run in families (are inherited), but others do not.

HOW CAN PARENTS HELP? If your child is born with a birth defect: Acknowledge your emotions. You might feel shock, denial, grief, and even anger. Accept those feelings, and talk about them with your spouse/partner and other family members. You also might consider talking to a social worker, counselor, or psychologist.

Buffalo and its surrounding area are known for great foodie finds, cocktail bars, live music, and one-on-one time ideas. But instead of having to search for it, I’ll take you along for the ride and share all of the best-kept secrets around!

Kicking off this first article, I decided to come in hot with what my hubby and I call “the odyssey date.”

What is an Odyssey Date Night You Ask?

It’s the type of date night where instead of going to one restaurant and ordering drinks, appetizers, dinner, and dessert, you do all of that—but at different locations. Drinks at one place, appetizers at another, dinner at another, and dessert at a final destination.

Mix it up however you want. Do dessert first, perhaps! Don’t do dessert at all—swap it out for a nightcap! Whatever your heart desires, I say go for it!

I highly suggest making sure your babysitter, if you need one, has a good five hours of time to give you because this is intended to be a full evening experience.

Destination: Elmwood Village

Date night destination—We’re heading to Elmwood Village! First of all, what I love about Elmwood is its proximity to literally every surrounding town. Williamsville, Orchard Park, Amherst, Clarence, Tonawanda—all 25–35-minute drives away (make it 20 minutes if traffic is cooperating). And the vibrancy! Whatever vibe you’re craving, Elmwood has something for you.

Why I Love Odyssey Date Night

I love odyssey date night because it makes me feel like we’re out of town on vacation. I especially feel this way when one or more of our stops is somewhere we haven’t been before. The feeling that you’re on vacation is the ultimate in relaxation, and to be able to recreate that minutes from home is pretty cool.

This is a totally different experience from the previous destinations, but it’s super cool to have that juxtaposition—to go from caviar to burgers! We love that element of surprise to our date nights.

But if you’re like me, at this point we’re about three hours into the night, and the last time I had real food was at stop number one, LOL. This leads me to a second option, or pick your ending for stop #3: Allen Burger Venture (ABV), located right on Allen in the Allentown district. This is not your average burger joint. While the atmosphere is super relaxed, the burgers are anything but. The burgers are high-end—fancy,

The best part about Buffalo is there’s no shortage of new bars, lounges, or restaurants to explore. Call it an odyssey date night, call it a food crawl, call it whatever you want—but whatever you do, try it! It takes an average night, where you would just go to one place for dinner and then come straight home, and transforms it into a full-on experience.

Remember, we deserve to play and explore too. Just because we’re adults doesn’t mean the fun has to stop. And because we’re adults, no one can tell us how many restaurants we can go to in one night—so there’s that!

Finds Hope in Healing

estern New York Compassion Connection: A Center for Grieving Children and Families recently wrapped up our second family introduction group, Embracing Hope, this past November. If you asked our staff, most of us would agree that our family group nights are some of the most meaningful and rewarding moments of our work.

So much heart and soul is poured into this program.

We carefully design our curriculum, plan age-appropriate grief activities, coordinate our incredible volunteers, and walk alongside families through the intake process—all to create a foundation for the most healing experience possible through a deeply organic and human medium: peer-to-peer support.



OUR SPACE

The grief center is truly the home and heart of WNYCC. Each age group has a room intentionally designed to support the emotional needs and developmental stages of our participants.

The Little Lanterns room houses our 5–7-year-olds, filled with play-therapy tools that help them express and explore their grief in ways that feel natural to them.

Our Pathfinders room is where our 8–12-year-olds find comfort, with age-appropriate play therapy items, plenty of room for crafts, and small cozy corners to curl into.

The Navigators room welcomes our teens, ages 13–18, with bubble hockey, air hockey, shuffleboard, and a warm conversation pit—an inviting space where connection grows in its own time.

Parents gather in the Skylark Room, named in honor of Tom Mysiak, our executive director Gwen Mysiak’s late husband, who had been restoring a ’66 Buick Skylark before he passed. The fireplace and calming colors make the space feel safe, grounding, and full of hope.

Molly’s Room, another beautiful adult meeting room space offers serenity in an “urban loft” vibe with many reflections of the inspiration behind it, Molly Kaminski, who died at age 19 in 2022.



THE PROGRAM

Embracing Hope is designed specifically for our new families—those who have not yet had access to formal grief support. This introductory program spans seven weeks, with each session centered around a different theme. The children’s and teens’ activities intentionally mirror these weekly themes as we guide them through Group Building, Telling Your Story, Grief Expressions, Coping, and Supports.

During the seventh and final week, each family collaborates to design a quilt square featuring photos and memories of their person. We then partner with Stitch Buffalo, who lovingly stitches the squares into a large community quilt that hangs in the center. It becomes a tangible reminder that their person is always present here—woven into the fabric of our space, our hearts, and our healing work.



WHAT A NIGHT LOOKS LIKE

Families begin arriving around 6 p.m. to share a warm dinner—made possible through a generous grant from Rich Family Foundation. This shared meal creates a sense of home and togetherness that can feel so absent in the wake of loss.

Around 6:30 p.m., families separate into their groups, each led by our grief-trained volunteers. These volunteers are a huge part of the magic that happens here. They facilitate conversations, encourage expression, and hold space with such compassion. They often leave with touching stories of connection—moments when a child shared bravely, or when a group found comfort in each other through a difficult or complex emotion.

At the end of the night, staff and volunteers come together briefly to reflect: what worked well, what we could adjust, and continued on page 44 January 2026 WNY Family 43

Our biggest “problem”? Getting the kids to want to go home. When they linger, chatting and playing long after group has ended, we know something special happened.



THE IMPACT

By 7:45 p.m., groups conclude and children reunite with their parents.

Walking out of those rooms, you can feel the energy shift. It becomes lighter— like a weight has been lifted from each family’s shoulders simply by being seen, heard, and understood in a world that often tiptoes around grief.

One of the most powerful moments this session came from a grieving widow of four children. On the last night of group, overwhelmed with emotion, she shared her gratitude for a place like this—somewhere that restored her sense of hope. A light in the dark. She spoke about how desperately her kids needed a place where their grief could be acknowledged and expressed safely.

ALTERNATIVE WAYS TO PAY FOR COLLEGE continued... college are indeed transferable to a four-year college to complete their bachelor’s degree.

Another possibility is to have the kids start their education at a public state college and then transfer to a private college, if that’s where they really want to go. Public state colleges are almost always less expensive than their private peers. Make sure, once again, that the courses they take at the state college are transferable to the private counterpart.

AP AND IB COURSES If your kids aren’t seniors, see if their high school offers AP (Advanced Placement) or IB (International Baccalaureate) courses. Many colleges across the U.S. offer college credits for AP and IB courses that students have passed in high school with a certain score. Call the office of admissions at the colleges your kids are interested in attending to determine which courses and scores are eligible for credit; this can differ from college to college.

DUAL ENROLLMENT PROGRAMS Another option is to have your kids enroll in a dual high school— college program. Referred to as early college programs, these programs allow high school students to earn credits for free or at a reduced cost at participating (often community) colleges. These courses count towards both their high school diploma and college degrees.

PRIOR LEARNING CREDITS If your kids plan to take a year or more off after high school to pursue

other interests before they start college, it’s worth considering that many colleges offer prior learning credits for relevant work and other types of experiences.

Contact the office of transfer evaluation at the colleges where your kids apply and might eventually want to enroll to see if they offer such prior learning credits and which types of experiences qualify for credit.

NEGOTIATED TUITION, PREPAID TUITION PLANS, AND INCOME-SHARING AGREEMENTS There are ways to possibly lower college expenses that require you to work directly with the colleges your kids might want to attend. First, try to negotiate a lower tuition. It’s difficult but it can be done, especially if your kids are academically gifted and they have been accepted to multiple (especially competitive) schools. Or request a so-called prepaid tuition plan which allows you to lock in the tuition at the current rate for the duration of their college education. See if their desired colleges offer such plans. Finally, many colleges offer so-called income sharing agreements whereby students commit to pay back a percentage of their income after graduation in exchange for reduced tuition.

LIVE OFF CAMPUS Oftentimes, it’s less expensive if your kids live off-campus in private housing instead of in college-managed campus housing. Check what is available in the vicinity of their colleges of choice. However, many colleges require first-year (and sometimes second-year) students to live on campus to help them better connect with each other and the college community at large.

CROWDFUNDING Many parents have successfully secured funds for their kids’ college education by encouraging family, friends, and others to donate money.

The popular crowdfunding website GoFundMe hosts more than 100,000 college fundraisers yearly, with tens of millions of dollars contributed annually. On average, each fundraising campaign raises around $2,000. As with all fundraisers, you need to make a compelling case why people you might not know should help pay for your kids’ college education.

A commitment to provide periodic updates on your kids’ experiences and achievements can affirm to contributors that their support was and continues to be worthwhile.

5 Health Benefits of Whole Milk for Kids

Children often prefer the taste of whole milk over low-fat versions, according to the “Journal of Dairy Science,” which can lead to more consistent consumption.

Adults may benefit, too. Among adults, full-fat dairy is associated with greater satiety, improved blood sugar regulation and a reduced risk of metabolic syndrome, according to a study published in “Nutrition & Metabolism,” helping reframe full-fat dairy as part of a balanced diet.

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 egg

1/2 medium white onion, chopped

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 1/2 teaspoons finely chopped garlic

Heat oven to 350º F. Line cookie sheets with parchment paper; set aside.

In large bowl, stir oats, flour, brown sugar, baking powder and salt.

In medium bowl, stir butter, milk, egg and vanilla until well mixed; add to oat mixture. Stir until combined and evenly moistened.

Drop 1/4 cup dough onto prepared cookie sheets. Slightly flatten dough with hand.

Bake 15-17 minutes, or until lightly browned, firm to touch and baked through. Move to wire rack to cool.

In 2-quart saucepan over mediumhigh heat, heat olive oil; add onion and garlic. Cook, stirring occasionally, until tender, 2-3 minutes. Add tomatoes, parsley and baking soda. Cook until mixture comes to boil. Reduce heat to medium-low; cook 10 minutes.

Stir in basil and honey.

Stir in milk to reach desired consistency. Cook over medium-high heat until heated through, 2-3 minutes. Add salt and pepper, to taste.

Garnish with basil leaves, if desired.
