JANET

BORCHERT

In the world of real estate, where transactions can be merely business-driven, there are extraordinary individuals like Janet Borchert, who see an opportunity to make a real difference in people’s lives.

Janet is a seasoned Realtor with WK Real Estate who has been creating lasting relationships with her clients for over two decades. Her journey from speech language pathology to real estate was driven by her passion for forming genuine connections and her desire to be a part of her clients’ long-term success. In this article, we explore Janet’s personal background, her career transition, her commitment to community involvement, and the impact she leaves on the lives of her clients.

IT CAN BE A VERY WONDERFUL & REWARDING CAREER!

I AM CURRENTLY MENTORING FOUR AGENTS. THIS INVOLVES REVIEWING THEIR CONTRACTS, GOING TO CLOSINGS AND INSPECTIONS WITH ME, AND MEETING WEEKLY FOR QUESTIONS.

Unlike her work in healthcare, where she couldn’t follow up with her patients, real estate allowed Janet to be there for her clients through every step of their homeownership journey. From first-time buyers to investment property owners, Janet assists clients across the spectrum of residential real estate needs. She also cherishes the long-term relationships that last long after the sale.

Mentoring and teaching have also been a large component of Janet’s work in the industry. To date she has mentored over 25 agents, guiding them through the complexities of the real estate world.

“Once an agent has her/his license, it’s a state requirement to be supervised for two years. I am currently mentoring four agents. This involves reviewing their contracts, going to closings and inspections with me, and meeting weekly for questions. I tell them to look at it like its graduate school – a two-year learning process.”

She finds immense joy in knowing many of her mentees have achieved top-producing awards and other accolades, making her work truly fulfilling. “Engaging in mentorship with new agents has proven to be beneficial in my role as well. Having been

in this profession for an extended period, there’s a possibility that I might unknowingly use language that clients find challenging to grasp. However, mentoring new agents keeps me attuned to individuals who may lack experience and are unfamiliar with industry jargon.”

As a locally owned company, WK Real Estate deeply values its connection with the Boulder community. Janet wholeheartedly embraces this ethos and remains actively involved in numerous community events.

She volunteers with the Community Food Share and donates to local causes, demonstrating her commitment to giving back to the community that has given her so much. Additionally, WK sponsors various local events and scholarships for the business school at the University of Colorado-Boulder.

With over two decades of experience, Janet offers valuable insights into the current real estate market. As the market has stabilized somewhat, she encourages potential buyers to take advantage of this time when they can avoid bidding wars. By collaborating with reputable lenders, viable solutions can be found to tackle the higher interest rates. Janet predicts a surge in demand from millennials and other buyers, making the present an opportune time to invest in real estate.

As for Janet’s personal life, she is a single mom, who has raised four children who are all grown now. Despite facing the challenges of single parenthood after her children’s dad passed away five years ago, she dedicated herself to her children and cherished the time spent with them. However, as her children have become independent adults, Janet has found more time to explore her passions and interests. When she isn’t dedicating herself to her clients, she enjoys an active life of

hiking, gardening, and traveling. She has discovered that getting out of town allows her to take a break from her work, even though she still remains committed to her job. Her love for concerts and music has led her to travel to various places to attend live performances. She recently caught Dead and Co at Folsom Field with some girlfriends as well as Taylor Swift in Denver with her daughter. Currently, Janet’s biggest passion centers around following a DJ named Kygo. She and her friends have become avid fans of his music remixes and have traveled to places like Cabo, New York City, Las Vegas, Malibu, and Dana Point to catch his performances.

Kygo has become their inspiration to explore new locations and enjoy unforgettable experiences.

Her love for football and the college atmosphere has remained a constant in Janet’s life. Since 1976, she has been attending CU football games and is a proud season ticket holder. Having attended the university during its national championship victories, the college games hold a special

place in her heart. Janet has even turned her passion for football into a tailgate tradition, where she mingles with clients and enjoys the camaraderie of fellow fans.

Janet’s connection with WK Real Estate runs deep. Her mother still works with the company, and now Janet’s daughter works there as well, creating a wonderful three-generational WK connection. “There are four multi-generations who work at WK Real Estate. This speaks volumes about the company’s excellence.

Janet wants to emphasize that real estate is far from an easy job. If someone is solely driven by the desire to make a lot of money, this might not be the right profession for them. The role of a real estate agent involves continuous support and assistance to clients during challenging times, fostering meaningful relationships.

Janet advises newcomers to the business that it goes beyond merely showing properties. It requires utmost focus and adherence to numerous rules and regulations, many of which people may not even be aware of.

Continuous education is essential to stay informed about the ever-changing landscape of the industry. But, if you’re ready for all that, Janet says, “It can be a very wonderful and rewarding career!”

MATT MATT

REALTOR on the move

JENSEN

JENSEN

BUILDING CONNECTIONS AND MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN REAL ESTATE

Meet Matt Jensen, a dedicated Realtor who is originally from Boulder County.

Known for the funny myth surrounding Boulder County that draws its residents back like a magnet, Matt embraces the so-called “Curse of Chief Niwot.” As a Boulder High graduate, he experienced the nostalgic feeling of returning to the breathtaking view of the Flatirons, wondering why he ever left.

Matt’s journey from college baseball to teaching, entrepreneurship, and eventually real estate has shaped him into a person driven by authentic connections and a desire to serve others.

Growing up, baseball played a significant role in Matt’s

life. He received a scholarship to Dakota Wesleyan University, a small NAIA school located in the wintery city of Mitchell, South Dakota. However, Matt soon realized that the environment didn’t suit him, prompting a transfer to a junior college in Kansas.

Eventually, he found his way to the University of Northern Colorado, where he pursued a degree in broadcast journalism. Matt’s dream of becoming a sportscaster for ESPN seemed within reach, but he humorously remarks, “They said I have a face for radio.”

Before finding his true calling in real estate, Matt embarked on various career paths that enriched his skills and shaped his character. From waiting tables in college to coaching baseball and engaging in corporate sales, Matt garnered valuable insights and learned the importance of hard work, ambition, and personal growth. He even ventured into entrepreneurship by starting his own sports apparel business, which taught him invaluable lessons about building infrastructure, creating systems,

and managing processes. Throughout these diverse experiences, Matt discovered his love for connecting with people on an authentic and meaningful level.

Meeting his wife, Diane, who worked as a counselor at New Vista High School, prompted Matt to pursue a job in education. He obtained the necessary credentials and became an adjunct teacher. Additionally, he was the head baseball coach at Monarch High School from 2009-2010. When Matt recognized the need for a change, he decided to explore a career in sales, ultimately joining Housing Helpers, a real estate company in Boulder. The success he achieved while helping people find rentals inspired

him to obtain his real estate license, and he joined WK Real Estate.

When Matt began his journey in real estate, the vice president of WK Real Estate challenged him to make a multi-year commitment to the effort. She said, “I want you to commit to four years; can you do that? No matter what happens, give it four years, and I think you’ll thrive.”

Determined to succeed, Matt embraced the opportunity and indeed thrived within that timeframe. Though he faced ups and downs, he remained loyal to WK Real Estate because he loved the company’s local and community-oriented approach.

Matt realized that his true

18 • September 2023 @realproducers

motivation lay in connecting with people rather than viewing real estate as a mere transaction. By focusing on building relationships and providing exceptional service, he discovered that success naturally followed.

Matt’s passion for education is evident in his approach to real estate, and he particularly likes clients who are coachable. He is a mentor to real estate students who attend the University of Colorado Leeds Business School. “I’ve done this for the past three years and have found it really rewarding to help educate young people about the challenges of choosing a career in real estate. Some of them have even interned with me.”

Matt enjoys working with first-time homebuyers, who often require guidance and support throughout the process. Recognizing their excitement and the challenges they face, Matt takes on the role of clearing roadblocks, helping them make informed decisions. He sees a trend of finding opportunities to become creative with lending to counteract the high interest rates now. With strong relationships with lenders, he navigates these

waters to ensure his clients’ dreams become a reality.

One memorable experience showcases Matt’s dedication to his clients. A lead from Zillow approached him after their deal fell through with an online lender. Devastated, the client was on the verge of giving up. Sensing the importance of the situation, Matt connected them with a trusted contact who saved the day. To express his gratitude, Matt bought her a tiara at the closing, recognizing her exemplary work. Furthermore, he willingly sacrificed a portion of his commission to help the client secure their dream home. Matt says, “In this situation, it was simply the right thing to do.”

During a training course, a significant turning point in Matt’s journey unfolded. As the speaker recounted a success story, Matt found himself captivated by the narrative. What made this moment even more remarkable was the fact that he was seated right beside this individual, Chris Doyle, a highly respected Realtor affiliated with The Group. Chris’s presence and the powerful message he conveyed

deeply resonated with Matt, prompting a shift in his mindset. Inspired by Chris’s profound words, “people to serve,” Matt recognized that true personal and professional fulfillment lay in selflessly serving others.

This realization became the cornerstone of his approach to various aspects of his life, including real estate, volunteering, coaching, and community engagement. By prioritizing service to others, Matt discovered that not only did it bring him a profound sense of personal satisfaction, but it also became the catalyst for business success.

Beyond his professional life, Matt values his family time with his wife, Diane, and

their nine-year-old daughter, Natalie. Together, they lead an active lifestyle. They find relaxation in dining out, enjoying movies at home, and engaging in friendly games, where Matt claims his dominance. He enjoys strumming his guitar as a means of relaxation. The family’s love for hockey, fueled by Natalie’s participation in the sport, is a new pastime that the family is obsessed with.

Speaking of sports, Matt is a huge University of Colorado Buffs fan.

Matt had a unique opportunity in 2013 to revitalize a historical semi-professional baseball team known as the Boulder Collegians. Originally established by a local businessman named Bauldie Moschetti, the Collegians had achieved

national recognition and secured six National Championships during the 1960s and 1970s. From 2013 to 2020, Matt served as the team’s General Manager. However, the progression of his real estate career compelled him to face a difficult choice: parting ways with the team. Fortunately, a group of devoted baseball enthusiasts assumed control, allowing him to continue supporting the team as a donor and sponsor. Matt says, “Giving up the team was one of the most challenging things I have ever encountered. But because of that decision, I’ve been able to assist a larger number of individuals in making one of the most significant purchases of their lives.”

Matt likes to think of himself as “Mr. Community.” He is an ambassador to the Boulder Chamber of Commerce and a former chair for the Young Professionals Board where he grew the constituency by 600%. Additionally, his involvement as a Boulder Community Foundation Leadership Fellows Alumni

further demonstrates his commitment to civic engagement. Focusing on meeting basic needs, Matt dedicates his efforts to organizations like Community Food Share. He serves on various committees, including the golf tournament committee, donates regularly, and initiated the Community Food Share Bracket Challenge for March Madness. His passion for creating impactful events extends to hosting a family-friendly cruiser ride on the Boulder Creek Path, raising $4,000 for a local charity last year.

Above all else, Matt wants readers to understand his unwavering dedication to fostering connections, prioritizing people over transactions, and supporting individuals through significant life transitions. “I firmly believe that my impact is both tangible and meaningful, and it all circles back to the power of genuine connections,” states Matt. He takes great joy in serving not only his clients but also his friends, family, and the broader community. By extending his support and being there for others during both celebratory and difficult moments, he strives to make a positive difference in their lives.

KEITH ROBINSON

A Realtor with a Passion for Service and a Heart for Adventure

Keith Robinson’s path to real estate is nothing short of remarkable -- filled with adventure, self-discovery, and a deep desire to be of service to others.

Raised in a small town in Indiana, Keith earned his degree in organizational leadership from Purdue. With a thirst for adventure and a desire to expand his horizons, he planned to travel to Bogota with a friend to teach English. Their timing, however, coincided with the disappearance of several Americans there and they chose not to go. Yet soon after, another door for exotic adventure opened. A close friend called who had recently completed a job in Guam. “He thought I’d be a perfect fit.”

This phone call served as the catalyst that prompted Keith to embark on a series of fascinating experiences -- living and working abroad in such locales as Guam, Saipan, and Australia. His unconventional roles ranged from teaching computer classes on a cruise ship in the Caribbean to managing sports activities at a resort in Thailand. While in Thailand, he explored the region’s culture through backpacking, acquiring unique and invaluable experiences that can only be obtained through this adventurous approach. His travels had such an impact on his life he often says, “I got my degree from Purdue and my education from travel.”

While his travels provided countless stories and unforgettable memories, Keith’s heart led him back to Indiana when his grandmother fell ill. Little did he know that a twist of fate would soon lead him on a new path. Within a month of starting a job as a server at Dick Clark’s American Bandstand Grill, he quickly rose to become the corporate training manager—a testament to his drive and adaptability. However, life had more surprises in store. After his grandmother passed away, he felt the urge to explore new horizons. He accepted a position as a sports instructor at a sister resort in Saipan, and later found himself in Australia, where he worked as a project manager for a construction company in Sydney.

Eventually, the call of Boulder County beckoned to him, and in 1999, Keith made a trip there to visit friends. Once there, he made the life-changing decision to move to this vibrant community. It was love at first sight as he discovered the energetic atmosphere of Boulder, with its residents engaging in outdoor activities like running, biking, and walking their dogs. Keith knew he had found his place—a place where he could thrive. However, still unsure of what his path should be, he enrolled in graduate school. He went on to work for a consulting firm where he was assigned to work on the Hewlett-Packard account. The consulting firm closed its Denver office, but Keith saw the opportunity to “hang his own shingle” and continued to work with Hewlett Packard. Unfortunately, the dot. com crash occurred, and that ended.

After more soul-searching while backpacking through Australia and New Zealand, the idea of real estate kept resurfacing in his mind, persistently drawing his attention. “I had already bought and sold a couple of places and fixed them up myself. I knew that real estate was something I was very passionate about. When I came back from that trip in 2002, I sat down with my real estate agent and friend, Rob Justice, and told him what I was thinking. I already knew Rob as a man of integrity and someone who values providing high-quality service, two traits that we both shared. After our conversation, I knew this was something I could bring to the real estate industry, and it sealed the deal for me to become an agent.”

Even though Keith’s path to real estate was not a linear one, he gained valuable experience in the fields of

consulting, customer service, construction, and project management, all proving invaluable in his new profession. Drawing from his consulting background, he has developed a step-by-step system for both buyers and sellers, ensuring a smooth and transparent experience for his clients. Clients appreciate his systematic approach, knowing that each step of their real estate journey is thoughtfully considered.

In real estate, Keith is also able to combine his professional expertise with his passion for helping others. Having experienced a challenging childhood, he understands the importance of supporting and guiding young individuals. His volunteer work focuses on initiatives that positively impact children’s lives. For a decade, Keith dedicated his efforts to a grassroots local nonprofit, raising funds to construct schools in Nepal. He planned to travel there to attend the grand opening of one of the schools in 2015 until disaster struck and devastating earthquakes hit the region. He and his friends changed course, assembling a team of volunteers and traveling to the decimated village, only 50 miles from the epicenter. They assisted the villagers in obtaining food and basic needs with $60,000 they raised in just 30 days! This profound experience left an indelible mark on Keith.

Keith continues his charitable work today, organizing a charitable golf tournament supporting Boulder Voices for Children. “We organize a golf tournament for various men’s clubs in Northern Colorado and play a 2-day championship tournament. It’s a lot of fun while raising money for a great cause. This is our third year doing it.”

Beyond his altruistic endeavors, Keith finds joy in an active lifestyle. With most of his relatives still in Indiana, Keith regards his friends in Boulder as his chosen family. He enjoys golfing, mountain biking, hiking, camping, and snowboarding as well as supporting the Denver Nuggets, Colorado Rockies, Avalanche, and the Broncos.

Furthermore, Keith’s deep-rooted interest in spirituality has been a driving force throughout his life. He has been meditating since the age of 17 and has studied with various teachers around the world, attending retreats to further explore the essence of life and personal growth. This profound connection to his spiritual side has brought him inner peace and allowed him to cultivate a sense of calm and compassion that he brings to his real estate career.

Keith faced a significant setback during the Marshall Fire in December 2021. With his home substantially burned, Keith’s perspective shifted, leading him to cherish the simple joys in life and be even more grateful for the blessings that surround him. His gratitude deepened and reminded him of the everyday things we should all appreciate. His personal growth and resilience shine through as he continues to serve his clients with unwavering dedication and gratefulness.

For Keith, being a Realtor is more than a career—it is a way to make a positive impact on people’s lives. His commitment to service, coupled with his extensive life experiences, makes him a unique soul and positions him as an outstanding real estate expert.

23 years in a row is no small feat. We cannot win this award purely on luck. We THANK YOU, our customers, for raising the bar every year by making sure we’re providing “the highest quality service experience EVER”. Nesheims

Boulder County Real Producers is pleased to introduce you to a valued partner of the Boulder County community: Nesheim’s Cleaning Services, co-owned by Edward Fosado and Dr. Lindsey Williams, Ph.D.

Nesheim’s Cleaning Services has been serving Boulder County for approximately 40 years.

The original owner was Bill Nesheim, who later brought in a friend, Rick, as a partner. Over time, Rick and his wife, Janet, took over the business.

Edward joined Nesheim’s in 2001. When Rick and Janet decided to retire and care for their grandchildren, Edward expressed his interest in purchasing the company.

Rick’s response was, “I couldn’t think of anyone better,” and from there a seamless transition took place. Edward was able to retain the same dedicated employees, some of whom have been with Nesheim’s for over three decades. Six months after Edward took over, his wife, Dr. Lindsey Williams, joined him.

Nesheim’s Cleaning Services specializes in cleaning various types of flooring in homes, including carpets, hardwoods, stone, tiles, and area rugs as well as upholstery, granite, and a myriad of other materials.

The company’s expertise extends into emergency restoration work, particularly in addressing water, fire, and damage caused by mold. Nesheim’s follows a thorough approach, aiming to salvage and clean items whenever possible, only resorting to removal if necessary. For tear-outs, they perform the service and thoroughly prepare and sanitize the area for subsequent contractor work.

Dr. Lindsey Williams emphasizes their commitment, “With water restoration, our number one goal is to make it safe for your family, and make sure things are done right.”

Nesheim’s possesses the necessary experience, certifications, and equipment to handle emergency restoration work effectively. Furthermore, they maintain meticulous documentation for insurance purposes, recording readings such as temperature, humidity, and daily moisture levels.

With a nod to the future, Nesheim’s Cleaning Services is undergoing a service expansion to include epoxy garage floor installations. Recognizing the value of working with home builders engaged in new construction, they see epoxy garage floors as an impressive feature to offer prospective homeowners. Builders can now include this amenity on their list of offerings.

As Realtors strive to present the best product to clients, Nesheim’s is ready and able to serve as a vital partner. Being a local, small-scale business, Edward and Dr. Lindsey Williams are happy to provide personalized service and support to fellow small business owners within the community. They have cultivated strong relationships with Realtors, who feel comfortable reaching out to them for last-minute jobs. Dr. Lindsey Williams and Edward understand the importance of their contribution and actively engage with the community and surrounding cities through their participation in events and sponsorship. This past July 4th, they participated in a local parade to reinforce this message. “We want our customers to know that not only

are we here to do a job for your home, but we are also a part of this community,” states Edward.

As president of Nesheim’s, Edward is responsible for overseeing all field operations, encompassing all tasks associated with technicians, job management, truck maintenance, and sales efforts. His role requires hands-on involvement and effective management of on-the-ground activities. On the other hand, Dr. Lindsey Williams serves as vice president and takes charge of the financial aspects, human resources, and front-end training. She also oversees office management, customer service, scheduling, and the daily operations that keep the company running smoothly.

Despite juggling children and their thriving business, Dr. Lindsey Williams provides behavioral health services in private practice. Before

joining her husband at Nesheim’s, she worked in the sex assault division of the police department.

The couple has four children: Nicolai (15), Zoe (14), Karalina (9), and Massimo (2). Jager and Vanelope, their two English bulldogs, complete the family picture. Zoe and Nicolai contribute to the company during the summer and are both gaining real-world experience in customer service and other roles. Zoe answers phone calls, while Nicolai accompanies the technicians on jobs. This means that when customers contact Nesheim’s or request a service at their home, they may have the opportunity to interact with one of Edward and Dr. Lindsey Williams’s children. Perhaps they will even become the next generation to run Nesheim’s!

Dr. Lindsey Williams illustrates their strong belief in making a difference in people’s lives through a heartwarming story. A customer who had lost her young daughter to cancer wanted to clean her daughter’s area rug yet was facing

financial hardship and lacked the money to cover the full cost. Understanding the rug’s importance, Nesheim’s took the rug, cleaned it, and returned it free of charge. This opportunity resonated deeply with them, as they strive to preserve cherished possessions and value the trust customers place in their hands. Edward’s personal experience with childhood cancer and Dr. Lindsey William’s background in the police department reinforced their belief in doing what is morally right.

Nesheim’s Cleaning Services has proudly taken part in the Best of Boulder County competition for the past 23 years and has achieved an impressive record of winning consecutively for all 23 years. Building such a reputation requires dedicated effort, and they strive to achieve it. A crucial aspect of their success is their long-tenured employees. In an industry known for high turnover, Nesheim’s endeavors to ensure employees lead fulfilling lives by offering competitive wages, insurance coverage, and a 401(k) plan.

Treating their employees like family, they organize two company outings each year, one in the summer and one during Christmas, in addition to providing bonuses. Edward and Dr. Lindsey Williams recognize the indispensable contributions made by everyone in the company, from the office staff and technicians to the mechanics. They maintain an open-door policy, valuing feedback from both employees and customers.

Accessibility is a distinguishing factor setting Nesheim’s apart from its competitors. When customers call Nesheim’s, they do not encounter an impersonal 1-800 number with an operator. Instead, Edward or Dr. Lindsey Williams personally attends to their needs. They believe this direct and accessible form of communication is essential and highlights their commitment to being in this together with their customers.

Edward states, “If we are too big to do the small things, then we are too small to do the big things.

Whether it is a simple one-room cleaning or a complex and urgent water restoration project, we are dedicated to delivering the same level of expertise and attention to detail.”

Their company motto perfectly captures their core message: “Our mission is to provide the highest quality service experience ever -- from friendly people you can trust.”

With a team of friendly professionals, Nesheim’s Cleaning Services prides itself on being a trustworthy partner for all your floor, fabric, and emergency water/fire/mold restoration cleaning needs.

ESTATE SALES

7 REASONS TO HIRE AN ESTATE SALE COMPANY

Whether you or your client are downsizing a home, moving locations, or navigating the death of a family member — it can be difficult to know how to handle leftover items. Though there are ways you can make a profit on old possessions, such as garage sales or online marketplaces, it can be a time-consuming process to navigate.

Luckily, professional estate sale companies are available to lend a helping hand. By hiring an

estate sale company like Blue Moon, a national franchise with a local territory in Boulder, you can both ease personal stress and maximize your potential profit.

According to Dulguun Lkhagvadorj, the owner of Blue Moon’s Boulder and Golden territories, there are seven key reasons why it is beneficial for local Realtors and homeowners to consider hiring professionals to run their estate sales.

1. SAVES TIME

Selling a bulk of items can take a lot of time and effort. Though there are many methods to start selling off products on your own, they may not always be the most efficient. “People think that they are going to post a handful of stuff on Facebook Marketplace or try to get rid of stuff on eBay,” Dulguun says. “However, they quickly find out that it takes way more time than they expected.”

Hiring an estate sale company can free your time, allowing professionals to skillfully take care of all the details that can put a pause in your day.

2. STAGING

One of the several services Blue Moon offers is home staging. Just like preparing a space for an open house, staging is an important facet of estate sales. From decluttering a house to rearranging for the most expensive items to be front and center, an estate sale company has the interior design skills and business expertise to create the perfect atmosphere for a successful sale.

3. GREATER SALE ATTENTION

One of the more difficult aspects of running your own estate sale is simply getting people to show up. When you hire a company like Blue Moon, the attention for your sale can skyrocket. From advertising to leveraging a large network, a professional company can get more eyes on your products. “In Boulder, we have 2,000 to 4,000 people on our email list every week that see our available sales,” Dulguun says. “Normally, we average around 200 to 250 purchases per sale.”

4. ACCURATE PRICING

Estate sale agents understand the value of your items and therefore can price them accordingly. With an understanding of antiques and art, they can make sure that you are not selling anything above or below its appropriate worth. “In this city, there is a lot of mid-century modern and Scandinavian furniture,” Dulguun says. “Boulder is an artistic town. I always try to tell my clients, we’re going to price things according to the current fair market value and quality.”

5. CATERING TO THE AUDIENCE’S NEEDS AND DESIRES

Sometimes what buyers want is not what you’d anticipate. From searching for rare antique furniture to simply looking to purchase basic household items like paper towels or cleaning supplies, everyone has a different purpose in showing up to an estate sale. “For example, after the Marshall fire, many people were trying to rebuild and get back items that they lost in the fire,” Dulguun says. “They’d show up to a lot of the estate sales just to try to get furniture or items that they needed to replace. People would buy things you’d never expect.”

A local company like Blue Moon knows how to display all items — large and small — to benefit the needs of potential customers and the community at large.

6. SUSTAINABILITY

It’s easy to get overwhelmed when trying to clear out a house — and many give up on trying to sell items and simply start to throw things away. Though this might seem easier at the moment, hiring an estate sale company can help you limit waste and gain profit for items you no longer want to keep. “Estate sales are a sustainable way for shoppers to get their stuff sold,” Dulguun says. “This way, what may not be useful to us or clients anymore can go to someone who sees their benefits.”

If you or your client are looking to downsize or sell property, hiring a local estate sale company like Blue Moon might be a good fit for you. From staging to comparative analysis pricing to marketing, bringing in professionals can simplify the process and return the most bang for your buck.

WE ARE THE MEDICINE THAT HEALS US

Most of us go to the doctor when we are not feeling well. In the waiting room, we read old magazines, answer a stream of questions, and put up with being poked and prodded. By enduring all of this, we expect something in return. Very often that something is a prescription. We usually don’t concern ourselves about the medicine the doctor has prescribed, if it helps us feel better. We trust that the doctor knows what is best.

“For some of our most important beliefs, we have no evidence at all, except that people we love, and trust hold these beliefs. Considering how little we know, the confidence we have in our beliefs is preposterous—and it is also essential.”

How does trust play into the healing process? What if you learned that the medicine your doctor prescribed was just a sugar pill? And, yet you got better! You thought it was a drug and expected to get well after taking the pills - and you did!

That, in a nutshell is the ‘placebo effect’. This is what happens when a person takes a medication that he or she perceives will help, although it has no proven therapeutic benefit for their condition. The medicine or treatment itself is known as a placebo, from Latin, “I will

please.”

There are different types of placebos. They may be pharmacologically inert, meaning that they contain no active ingredients. These types of placebos often contain basic ingredients like sugar (hence the term “sugar pill”). Medications that do have active ingredients but are not proven to work on the patient’s particular condition, can also be placebos.

For decades the placebo effect has been a nuisance for the medical profession. Some people do benefit from being given a sugar pill. This remarkable result cannot be prescribed, however, since it does not fall within the ethics of medicine to prescribe fake drugs. Therefore, a doctor, whose education stated that “real” medicine means drugs and surgery, will shrug off the placebo effect as psychosomatic, or “all in your head.”

This mentality shuts down a fascinating possibility: that a patient’s belief system plays a major role in the healing process. According to Deepak Chopra: “The placebo effect is real medicine because it triggers the body’s healing system. One could argue that this is the best medicine since the placebo effect has no side effects. Staying well means that the body is taking care of itself through a feedback loop of chemical messages that circulate throughout the bloodstream, lymphatic system, and central nervous system crucial to the healing system because

they keep cells interconnected. Every thought, decision, and action influences this feedback loop. Unwittingly, we damage the body’s natural state of health with negative input. The fact that this negative input comes from the brain means that thoughts, moods, and expectations get translated into chemical messages just as surely as molecules of aspirin or glucose. You and I are responsible for sending positive messages to facilitate the healing process.”

Yes, the placebo effect requires that you believe the placebo will cure you. Belief is the oldest medicine known to man. For hundreds of years, doctors, caregivers, and healers have known that sham treatments are made for happy customers. Thomas Jefferson marveled at the genius behind the placebo. “One of the most successful physicians I have ever known has assured me that he used more bread pills, drops of colored water, and powders of hickory ashes, than of all other medicines put together,” Jefferson wrote in 1807.

As Allied troops stormed the beaches of Italy, a nurse and an anesthesiologist anxiously watched a wounded soldier and could do nothing because their supply of morphine had run out. He was in severe pain and on the verge of shock. The nurse told a benevolent lie: she promised pain relief while injecting her patient with salt water. To the amazement of both nurse and doctor, the patient’s pain was relieved, and his condition improved. Henry Beecher, the anesthesiologist who witnessed this, returned from the war determined to study the real efficacy of drugs, and the placebo double-blind clinical trial was born.

Half of all drugs that fail in late-stage trials drop out of the pipeline due to

their inability to beat sugar pills. It’s not that the old meds are getting weaker, it seems the placebo effect is somehow getting stronger. For doctors, the placebo effect causes frustration—sure, sugar pills worked, but how could an ethical physician use them? Discovery would mean a lawsuit and a violation of the Hippocratic oath. And yet, the placebo could be one of their best medical tools: by unlocking the body’s own healing systems with no side effects!

What if people begin to believe in themselves instead of something outside of themselves? What if they believe they can change something inside themselves and achieve the same state of being as someone who’s taking a placebo? Do people really need a pill or injection to change their state of being? Can we teach ourselves to accomplish the same thing by learning how the placebo really works? Can we measure what’s happening in the brain, study the information and learn what to do, without relying on something outside of ourselves? Can we believe we ARE the placebo?

This means empowering yourself to accept that you have the biological and neurological machinery to do exactly that – heal yourself!

Dr. Joe Dispenza in his book, You Are the Placebo , provides the detailed knowledge and background information one needs to be able to understand what the placebo effect is and how it operates on your brain, as well as, how to create the same kind of miraculous changes in your own body all by yourself, by thought alone.

Are we more susceptible to catching the flu because all winter long,

health and wellness

everywhere we look, we see articles about flu season and flu-shot availability—all of which remind us that if we don’t get a flu shot, we’ll get sick? Could it be that when we see someone with flu-like symptoms, we become ill? What does this say about the beliefs we hold and the thoughts we have every day? Are we more likely to suffer from arthritis, joint stiffness, poor memory, and decreased energy, as we age, just because that’s the version of old age that the media projects with ads, commercials, television shows, etc.?

Advertisers tell us what drugs to purchase to prevent ‘old age’ symptoms. What other self-fulfilling prophecies are we creating without being aware of their input to our health? And what conventional truths can we reverse simply by thinking new thoughts and choosing new beliefs? You Are the Placebo makes the point that it’s your own thoughts, emotions, and beliefs that are generating chains of physiological events in your body. “If the brain expects that a treatment will work, it sends healing chemicals into the bloodstream, which facilitates that. That’s why the placebo effect is so powerful for every type of healing. And the opposite is equally true and equally powerful: When the brain expects that a therapy will not work, it doesn’t. It’s called the ‘nocebo ‘effect.” Bruce Lipton. (More about the ‘Nocebo’ next month)

In conclusion: Yes, we are the medicine that heals us. But…we need to believe!
