LOCAL FISHING REPORT FOR JUNE 4-10, 2019 A reminder to be sure and check the regulations as there have been changes. Wear your life jackets on the water. Season is open at all local lakes. Streams are open. Current snowpack for our region is averaging 95% of normal (steady). This past week combined wild and dangerous weather and cold temps, with sprinkled sunshine and dead calm. Go figure. Being on the water would either give you frostbite or sunburn. My prediction is that fishing will get a lot hotter around mid-June. Conditions drove a lot of fishermen away, so not a lot of reports came in. Here is a rundown: Paulina: Surface temp of about 45 degrees means some slower fishing. Jigging at 30-40 feet - best just east of the lodge. Pink/white jigs do well. Trolling: best on north and east end of lake at about 25-35 feet. Best colors pink, orange, blue. Smaller dodgers to start. Fish are showing some girth!! Paulina is famous for dangerous squalls that make mega waves and then quickly die down. Be careful. East Lake: Ramps open and docks are in. Water too cold for calibaetis hatch. Surface temp at 46 degrees. Trolling and jigging will be slow given the cooler weather. Once cold weather passes, expect an explosion of fish activity, perhaps 3rd or 4th week in June. Wickiup: 60% full (last year at this time 75%). No real changes in fishing. Fish shallow - about to 3-20 feet deep. Fish are very small, 8 to 11 inches (12 inches is a trophy). Not too choosy on color. My preference is black and white hoochie. Guard your stuff as there are thieves about. Inflow at 207 CFS, outflow at 695 CFS - so little change from last week. This is a Bureau of Reclamation Reservoir, and ODFW has no authority regarding the retention of water. Bureau of Reclamation is in the business of wholesaling water, not managing fisheries. That being said, Wickiup does not average down to 66% until July. I f you would like further information, you can contact the operator: North Unit Irrigation District, 2024 NW Beach St., Madras, OR 97741 Phone: 541-475-3625. Their website indicates they will be very courteous. Crescent Lake: 75% full and holding. A good time to go for Macks. Traditionally now jigging for kokes at 40 feet with anything pink. Best location between Spring Campground and Tranquil Bay. Trolling best between Spring Campground and Boy Scout Camp. Crane Prairie: 86% full and holding. Reliable, active fishing. Fish average 10-13 inches with a few at 16-18. Kokes are still deciding whether to join the party. For kokes try east of Quinn where the Deschutes/Cultus/Quinn channels come together. The resort is supposed to have free maps of the old sunken river beds. North and South Twin: Still some good action. A good mix of planters and holdovers of good size from last season. Fish are hungry, especially if you have a worm to offer. Reminder: no motors. Ugly incident last week where someone could not read and understand what that meant. Odell Lake: Water surface temp at 48 degrees. This past week made any form of fishing a challenge at times. Weather issues of wind and snow filled out the dance card. Most jigging limits at 90-110 feet of water near the bottom at the west end with 1 oz. pink/white or orange jigs. Trolling best at 20-30 feet. Ramp open at Princess Creek but per reports dock is not in. Will make a real challenge getting the boat back on the trailer with the high winds and waves. Water is on at fish cleaning station at Sunset. Shelter Cove Resort: Road is plowed and dry. Easy launch. Target Macks at 20 feet and also at 60 feet – they have the kokes surrounded. Sunset ramp is open. Good news: the kokes are at least 15% fatter than last year!! Fishing is only going to improve. Haystack: 98% full. Good for kayak trolling – stay near structure in this early season. Prineville Reservoir still at 100%. Ochoco at 86% (steady). River/flows: Little Deschutes at La Pine: 270 CFS up slightly. Trout Plants Scheduled: Fall River (artificials and barbless): 750 legals June 3-7; Big Lava Lake: 8300 legals - June 10-14; North and South Twin – 500 Trophy each, May 27-31. Rhubarb is the one vegetable that grows prolifically in La Pine. So much so, that we set up an annual celebration of its goodness for the region to celebrate! The Senior Center is hosting this event on June 15, 2019 and the Granny Pie Crew is in the process of making 1500 pies for people to buy. All of this stems from Linda and Sonny Stephenson, long-time community activists and original hosts for the Rhubarb event at their business, L&S Gardens. Now, Linda and Sonny have moved on to Prineville, taking 150 rhubarb plants with them so they can keep producing their line of rhubarb products. However, before she moved, she made it the first Rhubarb Festival in all of Oregon. People were able to set up as private vendors and customers can still try a myriad of things — all rhubarb, including wine, Rhubarb beer and desserts! On 05-26-19 at approximately 2359 hours, deputies from the Crook County Sheriff’s Office, Crook County Fire and Rescue, and Prineville Police Officers Responded to a motorcycle crash on SE Melrose Drive in front of the address of 2141. This is just outside the city limits of Prineville on the SE side of town. Upon arrival, deputies located two victims approximately 105 feet apart. The first was identified as Jake Nunes 24 years of age from Stayton Oregon. The second was identified as Justin Shupp 23 years of age from Portland Oregon. Both Nunes and Shupp were riding separate off road motorcycles on SE Melrose drive. Nunes Motorcycle stalled out in the 2100 block of SE Melrose drive. While Nunes was attempting to get his motorcycle running Shupp was headed west on SE Melrose Drive. Shupp had no headlight on his motorcycle and did not see Nunes stopped in the road. Shupp Ran into Nunes. Nunes sustained a major injury to his left leg and was bleeding severly. Shupp slid another 105 feet down the roadway and sustained road rash and neck and head injuries. Neither Shupp nor Nunes were wearing helmets. Both Shupp and Nunes were transported to St. Charles Hospital in Prineville for treatment. Nunes was later air lifted to St. Charles Hospital in Bend Oregon for treatment. Alcohol was definitely a factor in the crash along with operating an off road Motorcycles on a roadway at night with no head light. An investigation is continuing. Father’s Day June 16, 2019 How To Banish Mosquitoes From Your Yard Mosquitoes are unwelcome guests come spring and summer. But homeowners can take steps to increase the likelihood that their properties stay mosquito-free. Time spent in the backyard on spring and summer afternoons and evenings contributes heavily to the popularity of these times of year. Many homeowners go to great lengths to make their outdoor living spaces as luxurious as possible, only to be bothered by uninvited and bothersome guests: mosquitoes. Mosquitoes are not just pesky nuisances, but they’re also harmful. According to the American Mosquito Control Association, more than one million people across the globe die from mosquito-borne diseases every year. Such diseases include malaria, dengue, yellow fever, West Nile virus, and the Zika virus. The AMCA notes that many of the diseases transmitted by mosquitoes can be linked to travel to endemic areas. But mosquitoes in North America can still be harmful, and bites may result in severe skin irritation through an allergic reaction to mosquito saliva. Homeowners can employ several measures to prevent mosquitoes from invading their backyards this spring and summer. • Remove standing water. Stagnant water is an ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes, so homeowners must be diligent in their efforts to remove standing water around their properties. Mosquitoes can breed in bird baths, pets’ water bowls and empty plant pots that collect rain water. Routinely tipping these items and refilling them with fresh water can prevent mosquito infestations, protecting both humans and pets alike. • Inspect property for hidden pockets of water. While bird baths, pet bowls and kiddie pools are easy to find, homeowners may be unknowingly hosting mosquito breeding grounds elsewhere on their properties. For example, tarps used to cover pools, automobiles or grills that are not tightly secured can fold up, creating pockets where rain water can collect and give mosquitoes somewhere to breed. Mosquitoes also may use gutters to breed, so homeowners should routinely inspect and clean their gutters during spring and summer. • Keep a well-manicured lawn. Well-manicured lawns are less likely to be breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Because water plays such a crucial role in the mosquito breeding process, it’s necessary that all potential water sources in a yard be removed. Fallen leaves that are not removed and pockets of soil beneath trees and plants can collect rain water or water from lawn sprinklers, which can be just enough for mosquitoes to breed. • Use fans. Consumer Reports tested the efficacy of oscillating pedestal fans to keep mosquitoes from invading decks and patios and found that such fans cut mosquito landings by 45 to 65 percent for those sitting closest to the fans. When hosting backyard barbecues, homeowners can set up several such fans on their decks and patios to keep mosquitoes at bay.

Familiar melodies and gentle music can reduce the level of the stress hormone cortisol. • Gardening: Gardening lets a person tend to living things while getting some fresh air. Both the sunlight and the activity itself can be soothing and have a positive effect on mood. A study from the Journal of Health Psychology found that gardening, like listening to music, lowers cortisol levels. • Grab a good book. Taking the time to unwind and read can help ease tension in the muscles, lower one’s heart rate and induce calm. Research from the consultancy Mindlab International at the University of Sussex found reading reduced stress levels by 68 percent. • Start painting or crafting. Engaging in a creative hobby sharpens the mind and improves focus. You may also want to try focusing emotions onto the canvas to help release tension. A 2014 study published in the British Journal of Occupational Therapy found that 81.5 percent of respondents with depression reported feeling happy after knitting. • Take a dance class. A form of art and music, dancing can promote well-being through exercise and expansion of creative ability. It also can be good for the mind. A study from Swedish researchers that was published in the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine found that a dancing intervention program, twice weekly for eight months, helped teenage girls struggling with stress, anxiety, depression, and other problems. Petco Foundation Invests in Lifesaving Work The Humane Society of Central Oregon (HSCO) has been awarded a $20,000 grant from the Petco Foundation to significantly expand existing spay and neuter services within the community. To celebrate the investment, a check celebration will take place on Wednesday, May 29 at 11am at Petco 3197 N Hwy 97, Bend, OR 97703. Members of the media and community members are welcome to attend. The Petco Foundation investment will help HSCO continue its work to reduce pet overpopulation with increased funding for HSCO’s Spay Neuter Assistance Program (SNAP) which helps pet owners experiencing financial hardship afford spay or neuter surgeries for their pets. The Petco Foundation grant will also help fund HSCO’s Community Cat program designed to reduce the regional overpopulation of unowned, outdoor, free-roaming cats. In 2018, HSCO spayed and neutered nearly 600 community cats in Deschutes County, which reduced cat intake overall at local shelters. “The Petco Foundation investment enabled HSCO to double its ability to spay and neuter both animals owned by families struggling to cover the cost of preventative veterinary care, and to spay/neuter and vaccinate unowned community cats and reduce pet overpopulation,” said Sabrina Slusser, executive director at HSCO. The Humane Society of Central Oregon is a nonprofit organization that cares for nearly 3,000 animals annually. Its mission is to strengthen the human-animal bond by advocating and compassionately caring for animals.
