Pharmacy & Your Health Treatment for Legionnaire’s Disease Legionnaire’s disease is a severe inflammation of the lungs caused by a bacterial legionella. This type of bacteria can be found in water systems such as hot tubs and air conditioner systems. It gets into a person through the nasal passages. People who smoke or who have weak immune systems are more likely to get infected with Legionnaire’s disease. The symptoms that start in the first few days of the condition include flu-like symptoms such as a headache, muscle aches, chills, and a high fever. It is important to start antibiotic treatment early to help prevent complications that may damage the kidneys, lungs and heart. Antibiotics work in the body by either killing the bacteria or stopping it from growing to cause more harm. A tetracycline antibiotic such as doxycycline (Vibramycin) may be prescribed to help kill the bacteria’s proteins. It is best to avoid the sun because this medication can cause light sensitivity. Antibiotics that belong to the fluoroquinolone class (levofloxacin) may be prescribed in severe cases because they tend to kill many bacteria types that can cause lung infections.

Firefighters Quickly Subdue Brush/Forest Fire - South Of La Pine La Pine and Department of Forestry Firefighters responded to a fast moving brush fire, being pushed by light winds and warm temperatures at 16485 S. La Pine Dive, Thursday, September 8th, at 3:21pm. The La Pine Rural Fire Protection District and Oregon Department of Forestry, along with USFS, BLM, Walker Range, and the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office and OSP responded with four type VI engines four type III engines, two water tenders and 3 command units totaling 28 firefighters. They were able to quickly contain the 1.5 acre fire and protect three threatened structures. No injuries and the cause is under investigation.

Jerry W. Braziel

August 13, 1932 - September 5, 2016

December 4, 1940 - September 2, 2016 Jerry W. Braziel was 76 years old and was a beloved husband, grandfather, friend, and neighbor in La Pine for 27 years.

Maurice’s passions were golf, camping, snowmobiling, and his sidekick “Ellie Mae”; his beloved dog. He loved to travel and visit family and friends.

Jerry lost his battle with cancer on September 2, 2016 and joined the Lord.

Maurice was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and greatgrandfather.

Jerry loved to be in the mountains and enjoyed his job as a Timber Scaler for the BLM until his retirement.

He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Gwen Walker; brother and sister-inlaw, Patrick and Sandee Bronson; and his six children: Karen Thornburg, Karen (Todd) Brown, Brenda (Rick) Wade, Craig (Silvana) James, Denise (Adam) McLean, Bud (Kristina) Walker.

Jerry and Julie were married for 53 years and were together when he passed away.

CANS FOR A CAUSE PROJECT The La Pine Lions Club began collecting refundable containers in 2014. Our first project supported the Lions “Honor Flight” program which transported WWII Veterans to Washington DC for free. Cans For a Cause recently expanded to include Sight & Hearing, Scholarships, Leo’s Club and Community Service programs in the La Pine and Sunriver areas. The La Pine Lions Club is very thankful of the support it receives from the La Pine Community. Working together we can make a difference. Cans For A Cause accepts clean beer, soft drink, water and flavored water beverages in metal, glass and plastic bottles and cans of 3-liter or smaller capacity with the OR 5 cent deposit. Our collection locations have expanded as well. They are La Pine Feed and Pet Supply, Les Schwab, and S&S Auto Parts. Please donate your clean cans and bottles today. As a side note, the Hood River Lions have collected over 700,000 cans/bottles since starting their program in 2009. This translates to over $35,000! On August 21, 2017, at 10:30 in the morning, we will have an opportunity to watch an astronomical event that could be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to enjoy a SOLAR ECLIPSE in the skies above La Pine. Up and down the Highway 97 corridor, in a 95-mile radius of Redmond/Madras, the skies will reveal an optimum view of the eclipse, and not since February of 1979, with cloud covered skies across the State of Oregon, has there been a chance to view a total eclipse of the sun. The next total eclipse will be in 2121. So, we need to plan for hosting some visitors and do our best to have a once-in-a-lifetime experience in our own backyards! At a meeting of the Travel Oregon and COVA partners in Bend on August 23, it was revealed that all available rooms have been long booked for this amazing event, so what can we do? Everyone wants to come and there are no motel/hotel rooms available. We have an opportunity to turn our new BLM property gift into a golden chance for giving visitors a “place to land” and for raising needed funds for the development of the new lands off 6th Street in La Pine! The La Pine Chamber is talking to La Pine Park and Recreation District and other area collaborative partners about the possibility of using the 150 acres of land just out of the city limits as a place for a weekend of possibilities for area visitors and local residents to partake in the celebration of viewing one of nature’s all-time great gifts! We will be looking for volunteers, organizations and sponsors for the weekend event, along with some concrete plans to provide close-by activities for families and wanna-be astronomers to have fun with while they prepare for the event on Monday morning. We are proposing that we put together dry camping, bring in porta-potties, portable showers, drinking water and create some safe fire-pits with evening entertainment. We would host daily activities (a day trip to see Sunriver sights or a trip to the crater or the local lakes) that take visitors on something like a scavenger hunt, go to local area resorts/natural asset visits and back for chuckwagon meals available on-site for Saturday and Sunday evening, and woodcutter-like breakfasts on Sunday and Monday morning before the eclipse. There would be no end to the things that could be scheduled for this future event! By planning now, taking reservations for the campsites and preparing to have a star-gazing party every night to end with the solar eclipse on Monday morning, this could be a significant opportunity for our entire community! The bonus is that we could help the LPRD events grounds in a big way, and by getting the ball rolling next summer with volunteers stepping up to clean and organize the grounds, the event could lead much more quickly to development opportunities for the future of LPRD!

Uncorked Wine Festival Showcases Oregon Wines, Music And Vendors Uncorked Sunriver Style, a two-day showcase of wines, food, live music and classes will take place Friday and Saturday, September 16-17 at the Sunriver Homeowners Aquatic & Recreation Center (SHARC), 57250 Overlook Road. More than a dozen Oregon wineries will be on hand serving samples and selling wine by the glass, bottle and case. There will also be chocolate and cheese vendors offering tastes and sales of locally made products. New this year are free wine and cheese pairing classes. Cadets from the Civil Air Patrol High Desert Composite Squadron in Bend took orientation rides in gliders, sometimes known as over Labor Day Weekend in Prineville. The gliders have two tandem seats. The pilot/instructor sits in the back seat while the student or passenger sits in the front seat. There are controls in both locations, and the Cadets got to experience using the controls and maneuvering the glider once they were at a safe altitude. The pilot handled the takeoffs and landings. The gliders were towed to altitude by a Civil Air Patrol Cessna AC Charge and when the glider pilot deemed it was time, he instructed the Cadet to pull the release to free them from the tow cable.
