What To Support When Your Time & Money Is On The Line by T. Myers

Sometimes we have so many events and good causes to think about in our town, that it becomes hard to balance time, energy and donations to cover the many needs. In our small town we have two separate food programs covered by the La Pine Community Kitchen (on the corner of Finley Butte Road and Bonnie Way and the St. Vincent de Paul social service office behind the US Bank on Morson and Fourth St.) The Community Kitchen hosts a daily meal program and a once a month food box program, and they have a produce stand a few days each week. They also have a clothes pantry. St. Vinnie’s sports a food program and also does emergency assistance for families and has a small closet for household items and clothing. NeighborImpact also helps one Friday a month at the La Pine Grange on Morson St. to do a larger food give-away program. Both of these organizations depend on donations, and St. Vinnie’s has a retail secondhand store to help support their activities. Volunteers are needed for all three programs! Besides the obvious hard-working social service food and assistance programs, there are some active nonprofit agencies like La Pine Park and Recreation District that are funded partially through a tax payment. They take care of the local parks, but concentrate on education programs for youth and adults at the big park community center. The ongoing education of children and adults means that they prioritize offerings to help all ages and host an afterschool program for children and GED program for people who wish to complete their education. Sports programs with very modest fees are available to residents, and of course funding all of the extras are one of the District’s chief functions. The La Pine Chamber of Commerce does a great deal to keep La Pine in the purview of businesses and partners in and outside of the area. They are currently leading the charge to get Travel Oregon’s Accelerator Rural Tourism Studio up and running to build a marketing program for Newberry Country. They also work closely with business retention and other local economic drivers. All of these organizations depend on volunteers and donations of cash or time to succeed. The La Pine-Sunriver Newberry Habitat for Humanity program builds affordable and safe homes for qualified local applicants every year. The La Pine ReStore and the site volunteers contribute everything from items for resale to hours building the new houses and cash donations for the homeowner program. Thousands of hours are contributed each year for the housing program. Work done at the local ReStore is building the community with committed and engaged families who live and work in La Pine. There are other organizations that help children: Healthy Beginnings, FAN Network, WIC, various churches, and some terrific after-school sports programs like the Blue Lightning Mat Club/Hawk Wrestling, as well as,the school programs like Future Business Leaders of America, ROTC and others. Getting in touch with your school to help your children make choices about enriching activities can be done now as the school year begins. Other county-wide programs are a phone call away...usually through the schools once again...to get extra help when needed. Here are what others are saying: “I like to see the benefits of my efforts,” Ann Gawith explained when the question was posed. “I support local causes and events and I stay very busy.” “It has to be a passion of my heart,” Barbi Dunham told us. “I do send money in for the little stickers that come in the mail, though, and besides my local stuff, I support the Search and Rescue dogs.” “I shop at PetSmart,” Terri Lee said. “And I always do the payment roundup thing locally (Midstate or grocery stores at Christmas) and at the pet store to support the rescue animal program by checking additional dollars for that program. I personally volunteer to help with special events like the recent Great Giveaway because it helps many of the community members find what they need.” “I always support animals - neglected ones especially,” Dayle Boucher answered when asked about what she chooses to lend a hand. La Pine High School Senior Gage Yeager and Freshman Trentyn Tennant attended the FB:A National Leadership Conference that was held June 29-July 2, 2016 in Atlanta Georgia. During the conference, Gage Yeager and Trentyn Tennant competed with representatives from other state chapters for top honors in their events. It was a record breaking year with over 11,000 members and advisors attending the National Conference. Neither boys placed in the finals of their individual events, but both walked away feeling proud and honored to be competing against the “best of the best.” This was a remarkable year for these young Future Business Leaders as it was Gage Yeager’s 4th and final year competing at the National Level. Gage graduated from La Pine High School this last June and will be attending Montana State University this Fall. Trentyn placed first at the State level his Freshman year and competing at the National Level made him more eager than ever to share his experiences with his peers and to build up the La Pine High School Chapter. “Why not share this experience with everyone and make us better individuals and students” stated Trentyn. Other highlights of the conference included individual, chapter, and team competitive events relating to business skills and leadership; the election of a new national officer team; leadership development workshops; and recognition of members’ community service efforts across the Commonwealth. The Future Business Leaders of America’s mission is to bring business and education together in a positive working relationship through innovative leadership and career development programs. Gage and Trentyn want to thank the local La Pine Businesses and Community for the support to help them both achieve their dreams in competing at the National Conference. “We couldn’t have made it without the help and support of our community!”

With the start of the school year fast approaching, Deschutes County Health Services is reminding parents to make sure their children have all the immunizations they need to go to school and stay healthy.

Oregon law requires that children in school, preschool, or a childcare facility need proof that they are protected against measles, diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, mumps, rubella, hepatitis A and B, and varicella. Parents should take note that one dose of Tdap vaccine is required for incoming 7th graders. Tdap is a tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (whooping cough) booster. Whooping cough is a serious health concern in Oregon with more than 40 cases recorded last year in Deschutes County. Parents need to have documentation showing proof of immunizations, a medical exemption, or a non-medical exemption on file with their child’s school before December 2016 or they will receive a notice stating that the child will be excluded from school or daycare because of the missing immunization records. Only those who have a medical reason for not being vaccinated or have completed the education required for a non-medical exemption are exempt. Parents can call their child’s health care provider, a School-Based Health Center or Deschutes County Health Services at 541-322-7400 to make an immunization appointment. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), heart disease is the leading cause of death and disability in women over the age of thirty-five. Women with heart disease are more often misdiagnosed with other conditions such as heartburn. This often leads to worse outcomes than would be seen in men. Heart disease symptoms in women often include a chest pain that is described as sharp and burning and may spread to the neck, jaw, stomach, or back. A daily aspirin may be taken to help prevent heart disease by causing the blood to become less “sticky.” Aspirin helps prevent the clumping effects of blood cells which may block blood from entering the heart when the vessels are already narrowed due to plaque buildup. It is best to consult with a doctor about starting aspirin therapy in those who are at high risk of getting a heart attack. It is important to take the aspirin regularly for people who need to take it. This helps prevent a rebound effect, or the formation of another clot. Studies have shown that medications that belong to the class of ACE Inhibitors such as lisinopril (Zestril) may help prevent the progression of heart disease. ACE Inhibitors block the ACE enzyme from making more proteins that will lead to higher blood pressure and narrower blood vessels.

As part of the fire district’s on-going strategic planning process, the La Pine Rural Fire Protection District Board of Directors have adopted a Standard of Cover at the August 11th board meeting. A Standard of Cover for emergency response is intended to provide objective documentation of community risks and hazards that the citizens could expect, and based on the resources the community has available, to how well those hazards can be mitigated by their local fire and EMS services. Copies of the district’s new Standard of Cover, as well as Strategic Plan, are available on line on the district’s web site www.lapinefire.org and at the district’s administrative offices 51590 Huntington Road in La Pine.

Call Volume On Record Pace For La Pine Fire District Citizens making calls for emergency services to the La Pine Rural Fire Protection District are on a record pace this year. So far, in the first seven months of the year, firefighter-paramedics for the district have responded to more than 1264 calls for service. This is 10% more than was seen last year at the same time and now averages 6 emergency runs a day and with some particularly busy days that have seen up to 17 calls in one 24-hour period. Interestingly, actual working fire calls are down, but rescues, motor vehicle accidents, and most significantly - emergency medical calls, have increased. La Pine Rural Fire Protection District Fire Chief Mike Supkis states “the district’s professional and student firefighters have done a great job responding to the increased requests for services. The crews - between running calls, cleaning up and restocking, training and regular maintenance duties - are on the go around the clock”. The fire chief also states “triage and good assessment of each individual situation becomes ever more important to ensure critical needs are met first and the district can provide optimal service to the community”. ImPACT Concussion Baseline Testing The Center Foundation will be conducting ImPACT Concussion Baseline testing for children ages 11 through 17 years who have not already received the baseline in the past two years. Group testing will be on the following date and times: Tuesday, August 30, 2016, 9:00am-10:00am-11:00am; Tuesday, September 6, 2016, 9:00am-10:00am-11:00am. According to the CDC, concussions are second only to auto accidents as the leading cause of childhood injury. It is estimated that 15-20% of high school athletes receive a concussion in any given year, and if an athlete returns to play before the brain is fully healed, the child is at risk of second impact concussion syndrome. The Center Foundation is pleased to offer this community service as a means of helping protect young brains. It is recommended that student athletes have a baseline test every two years. ImPACT Concussion Baseline testing is a computerized “snapshot” of how a child’s healthy brain is functioning; the test takes less than an hour. The baselines are NOT MRIs or scans. Baselines are electronically stored for use in the event that the child receives a concussion. Should the child suffer a concussion, he or she will then be able to have the baseline compared to a post test conducted by a medical professional following the injury. Post concussion tests and assessment will be handled through parent or guardian self-pay or insurance. The cost of the baseline is $10. Supplies 4 Schools Supports Back-To-School Success For Central Oregon Students Mid Oregon Credit Union is collecting needed school supplies for students in Deschutes, Jefferson, and Crook Counties. The Supplies 4 Schools drive will run through the month of August. This year’s Supplies 4 Schools will assure that children who can’t afford needed and required school supplies will have a sense of belonging and readiness on their first day of school. According to Family Access Network (FAN), 95% of the families they work with indicate that FAN services help their child attend or stay in school. During the 2014-15 school year, 3,228 school children were helped with school supplies. Supplies will stay in the same community in which they are collected. BSNP Spay/Neuter Clinics Coming To Madras On September 6th Bend Spay and Neuter Project will host the first ever free spay/neuter and rabies vaccination clinic for dogs on the Warm Springs Reservation. The clinic will be held at the new community center in the Greeley Heights neighborhood. Patients will be taken on a first come, first served basis beginning at 7:30am with a maximum of 40 patients per clinic. Bend Spay and Neuter Project hopes to continue to provide free spay and neuter for dogs in Warm Springs on the first Tuesday of each month on an ongoing basis. Funding for spay/neuter and rabies vaccinations is being provided by The Daisy Fund, an endowment left by a generous donor who lived near the Warm Springs Reservation for many years, and who witnessed the suffering of many homeless dogs there. Dr. Byron Maas of Bend Veterinary Clinic says he’s been waiting for this for a very long time. “Having a clinic to address the overpopulation problem and to help the community of Warm Springs has been a dream of mine for many years. I am thrilled to hear this wonderful news, and look forward to helping make this program a long term success.” Megan Gram, Executive Director of Bend Spay and Neuter Project says that the situation for dogs in Warm Springs is dire and has been for many years. “Due to a complete lack of resources to prevent overpopulation, and there simply not being enough homes for them all, many dogs are left to fend for themselves. The Community of Warm Springs has been gracious enough to allow our organization to come in and provide services there, which will not only help the dogs but will also provide a humane option for community members to have a hand in controlling the overpopulation problem. Local rescuers and shelters have done what they can to help, and we will continue to use them as a resource, but a prevention is key. A regularly occurring free sterilization program coupled with education programs are the only way that we can hope to solve the devastating situation that currently exists right in our own backyard.” Bend Spay and Neuter Project plans to work with local shelters and rescues to find homes for dogs in need. They are also requesting assistance from our local veterinary community in the form of volunteer time, equipment and supplies for monthly clinics. Although primary funding is available for monthly clinics, more donations are needed to help provide additional medical care for dogs in need, and to eventually expand the program to include free spay/neuter and rabies vaccinations for cats, as well as to create new programs such as humane education and dog training classes to ensure a lasting impact on the community and it’s children. La Pine RFPD Performing Wildland Interface Structural Assessments For Firefighting Data Base La Pine student firefighters, in uniform and in a fire district vehicle, will be visiting homes and properties within the fire district this summer. The purpose is to pre-plan and collect critical data (from the outside only) for firefighters to use when protecting homes from a wildfire. This is a continuation of a multi-year project started last year. This is an extension of the National Wildland Fire Decision Support System which is linked with current Federal, State and County data bases. Firefighters and incident managers, regardless where they are from will have accurate data on the challenges they face and best apply resources to protect homes the during critical phases of a complex wildfire incident using computer systems and even hand held technology. Firefighters can collect all data visually from the driveway and participation is not required by the resident. However, firefighters may knock on the door to alert residents they are in the area and to what they are doing and will be happy to answer any questions. The Fire District is appreciative of each property owner for their effort to maintain their properties in a FireWise and FireFree safe condition. This activity is just one more effort to ensure we all survive the next wildfire in Central Oregon.

Mrs. Kelty Was born to Charles and Edith (Scoffield) Griffith in Albany, Oregon. She enjoyed her family, friends, gardening, the coast and traveling. Survivors include her daughter, Janell Baltz of La Pine, 3 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by husband (Tom), two daughters and one brother.

Yellow Jacket Season In late summer, and early fall, Yellow Jackets, wasps, and hornets are at their largest population levels and the possible interactions with people (and pets) are not often pleasant! Yellow Jackets are most aggressive when seeking food (sweets, fats, and proteins –think picnic foods, BBQ, and beverages) and when protecting their nest. Again, being stung is not pleasant – but fortunately for most everyone (both adults and children) - it is not an emergency. Prevention is always the best solution to anything potentially negative and encounters with Yellow Jackets are no exception. Situational awareness is a big factor. Yellow Jackets often nest in the ground duff, or tree and stump hollows. They also will build nest under eaves, decks, planters, and in areas that are protected from the weather. There will be considerable activity in the area, especially during warmer temperatures. When eating outside, or drinking beverages, or dealing with foods scraps - like garbage - encounters are more likely as they will be attracted to the food. Yellow Jacket traps are effective in reducing populations near frequented sites like back yards. Obviously long sleeve shirts and pants also offer more protection when there is Yellow Jacket activity in the area. Needless to say - do not disturb an active nest. During cooler temps and at times of low activity (i.e. at night) a long distance wasp spray can be effective on a nest site. If you, or your children, do have an unfortunate encounter, it will definitely be unpleasant and hurt, but likely not an emergency unless you are the very rare individual who is severely allergic. The best thing to do according to Web MD and other medical guides is to: • Remove any stingers immediately if still present (Yellow Jackets and wasps don’t leave stingers but honey bees do). Some experts recommend scraping out the stinger with a credit card. • Wash the sting site with soap and water. Placing an over the counter first aid cream (hydrocortisone) or sting aid product on the sting can help relieve redness, itching, and swelling. • Applying cool packs to the site may provide some mild relief and help reduce swelling. If using ice, wrap the ice in a towel or keep a cloth between the ice and skin to keep from freezing the skin. • Taking an over the counter antihistamine such as diphenhydramine (Benadryl) or a non-sedating one such as loratadine (Claritin) will help with itching and swelling and other reactions. • Take an over the counter ibuprofen (Motrin) or acetaminophen (Tylenol) for pain relief as needed. Most people will see significant redness and swelling of the sting site, body area and even a whole hand or limb. This is a normal reaction which the antihistamine and cool packs will greatly help with. A life threating reaction, and one that requires calling 911 and/or getting immediate emergency care, is when the individual gets starts getting hives (a rash) over their whole body, breathing becomes difficult and blood pressure falls. In these situations, take an over the counter antihistamine as soon as possible, and possibly using a doctor prescribed Epi-Pen (only when and as directed) and then getting immediate medical care is important.
