Special Road District #8 will meet on Tuesday, June 21st at 7:30pm at the Ward home, 15757 Sparks Drive, La Pine. We meet on the third Tuesday of each month at various members’ homes to discuss and decide the maintenance needs for our roads. We would like your input. COCC Plans Road Closures For Construction Work

To accommodate construction projects on campus, Central Oregon Community College will need to close short sections of both College Way and Loop Road through June 17th. A 350-foot section of College Way in front of the Bookstore and a 500-foot section of Loop Road between Pioneer and Ochoco buildings will be affected. As there is no way to route traffic around these sections of road, the closures have been scheduled between spring and summer terms to lessen the impact on students. Buildings south of the Campus Center will need to be accessed from Newport Avenue/Shevlin Park Road and College Way and buildings north of the Library will need to be accessed via Regency Street and Mt. Washington Drive. The closure on College Way is needed to install new utilities and improve sidewalks and the crosswalk that will serve the Health Careers Building. Sidewalks and crosswalks will be revamped on Loop Road. For information, call 541-383-7599.

Friends Of La Pine Let’s Clean-Up The City

The City of La Pine and the Friends of La Pine have rescheduled the “City Clean-up Day” for June 18th. We are again asking for assistance from community groups and individuals who would like to see the city’s downtown cleaned up for all of us and our expected summer visitors. The plan is based on forming teams with specific tasks assigned, supported by haulers, loaders and the like. The event is scheduled for June 18th, from 8:30 am to 1:00pm, followed by a hamburger/hotdog picnic lunch at the new City Hall parking lot. Here is how it’s planned: at 8:30am, we’ll gather at the new City Hall parking area (6th Street & Hwy. 97), form teams and make assignments. Relay For Life

Ready, set, go! Where? To the annual Sunriver/La Pine Relay For Life relay on June 25th-26th at the La Pine High School track! This year’s event will be bigger and better than ever, from start to finish. The opening ceremony will be at 10am on the 25th with great entertainment, some solemn words, lots of music, and a very touching survivors lap, with each survivor in a matching shirt. After that, each team (we have about 20) has their area decorated following the yearly theme. There is a great silent auction with good things you couldn’t imagine from golf to food, fun and things for your home. Of course, there’s lunch, then more activities, and in the evening, a beautiful luminaria ceremony... all this time, a member of each team is on the track walking - yes, we do that for 24 hours. The AARP DRIVER SAFETY CLASS is a nationwide, Oregon DMV accredited, defensive driver program focusing on driving safety within current Oregon laws in an ever-changing driving environment. It focuses a lot on natural-occurring age-related changes in driving safely. This class qualifies for the Oregon Insurance discount law for those over age 55. Each class is 8 hours total, given over two consecutive day 4-hour classes. All drivers are welcome, regardless of age. Student fee is $14 (AARP member $12). OBITUARY David H. Wirtz, Sr.

Norma Jean Poole

David H. Wirtz, Sr., of Crescent, Oregon, and former resident of Chemult, Oregon, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 30, 2011, at his home from Congestive Heart Failure. He was 75.

Norma Jean Poole, of La Pine, Oregon, passed away on June 7, 2011, at her home in La Pine, after a long battle with cancer. She was 78.

David was born on July 24, 1935, in Plentywood, Montana, the 13th child of William and Tillie (Witte) Wirtz. He was self-employed in the oil business, with his Service Stations, Bulk Plant, and Wirtz’s Gas Station/ Gifts and Tackle Shop. After nearly 40 years, he retired to live a life of fishing, hunting, and time with family and friends. David is survived by his partner, Shirley Bilderback; his sons, David (Debbie) Wirtz, Jr., Steve (Ruby) Wirtz, and Bill (Marilyn) Wirtz; and his daughter, Debbie. Other survivors include David’s partner’s children, Garth Bilderback, Darwin Bilderback, and Glenda Bilderback; nine grandchildren, Eric (Cory) Wirtz, Kyle Wirtz, Kevin Wirtz, Ryan (Christine) Wirtz, Amanda Wirtz, Josh (Mariah) Long, Brandi Simmons, Tom (Dana) Jenks, and Kenny (Shannon) Jenks; seven great-grandchildren, Rylan Wirtz, Noah Wirtz, Amanda Wirtz, Addison Ferguson, Audri Long, Tyler Jenks, Tara Jenks; his siblings, Sylvester Wirtz, Stanley Wirtz, Leanore Wirtz, Evalina (Sissy) Layne; and nephew, Tom (Buddy) Powell. Additionally, his very dear and closest fishing buddies, John, Ted, Jerry and Max. David was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Betty Jo; brothers Thomas, William Jr., Leonard, Albert (Mick), and Hubert; and sisters, Dorothy, Josephine, and Louise. No memorial services are planned at this time. Robert S. Hrbek

October 30, 1944 - June 6, 2011 Robert S. Hrbek passed away at his home in La Pine, Oregon on Monday, June 6, 2011, from congestive heart failure. He was born on October 30, 1944, in Chicago, Illinois, and was raised in Richmond, California, by his parents Silvyn and Erna (Johanson) Hrbek, along with his Grandmother Anna. Bob served his Country in the U.S. Navy, and was proud to honor all veterans.

Traditional Catholic Services were held, with interment at La Pine Community Cemetery. Mrs. Poole was born on May 5, 1933 in Benicia, California, the daughter of Oren and May (Demorest) Roderick. She graduated from high school and married former Councilman, Ernest J. Poole, on November 22, 1952 in Benicia.

Bob was married to Laura for 43 years of great love together, who survives him with their three sons, their wives and eight grandchildren - Mark and Elizabeth, along with their daughters Sarah, Laura and Hannah live in Yorktown, Virginia; Chris and Jennifer, their sons Brandon and Ethan live in La Pine, their daughter Jacynth Rose lives in Bend, Oregon; Ben and Suzanne and their daughters Annabeth and Kyra live in La Pine. Bob is also loved and remembered by his in-laws Ben and Pat Wilson and Doug, Dan, Cheryl, Al and their families, along with many, many friends.

She worked as a Secretary for the Budget Director at Mt. Diablo School District in Concord, California for over 22 years. She was a member of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, where she was past President of the Altar Society and was very involved in the church for many years; she chaired the committee that produced the church cookbook “Breaking Bread”. She was also past President of PTA and past Cub Scouts Den Mother; she was very involved with her children while they were growing up.

Bob always loved music, learning the accordion at age 4 and teaching by age 16. He played many instruments, especially mastering the organ. He shared his music with others from churches to lounges, hospital wards, black-tie events and home parties. Pick a song and he could play it.

She loved to cook, quilt and sew and also loved traveling and flowers. Norma played the piano and was also a member of “Sweet Adelines”.

He was an ordained minister in the Southern Baptist Church; he filled many pulpits around the area, sharing God’s Love. He particularly used every opportunity to help anyone he could, whenever he could. His favorite verse was John 3:16.

Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Ernie; children, Tom Poole of Clear Lake, California and Patty Zappa of La Pine; sisters, Ora May Martinez of Applegate, Oregon, Sue Meany of Phoenix, Oregon, and Jeanne Weaver of Nice, California; grandchildren, Jason Felt, Rena Stumpf, and Amy Baker; and 8 great-grandchildren. “She was a loving sister, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and we will all miss her greatly”.

When Bob moved his family to Oregon in the 1980s, he worked for the Forest Service as a ‘timber beast’. There are many tree stands in the Deschutes National Forest that are better for Bob having been there. He also manned most of the fire lookouts from Sugar Pine Mountain to Lava Butte when needed. He settled his family in La Pine to enjoy the fishing and hunting opportunities, teaching his family the love and respect for the outdoors, while still catching the big ones. Bob, with his family, participated in historical reenactments, Rendezvous!!! Also known as SharpStone he was known for flintknapping, antique bead collecting and historical raconteur (with much embellishment).

She was preceded in death by her parents; sons, Mark and Steve; and a sister, Dora Lee Walker (“Dorie”). He also served as District Chair for all of Central Oregon and was appreciated for his efforts by receiving national recognition as 2008 District Chair of the Year for the State of Oregon. Volunteers Needed For Public Health Advisory Board

The Deschutes County Public Health Advisory Board (PHAB) is currently seeking volunteers to fill several vacant board positions. Citizens who are interested in helping plan, support and evaluate how public health services are delivered and funded in Deschutes County should consider applying. The deadline to apply for PHAB is Friday, June 17. PHAB assists in the development of and advocacy for public policy that promotes and protects the health of Deschutes County citizens. The Board also advocates funding services that help sustain the public health system to improve the health of special populations. PHAB helps in developing priorities for services, helps to guide the Department’s strategic planning efforts and advises the Deschutes County Board of County Commissioners and Health Services Director about decisions related to health programs and services. The Board is in particular need of County residents from Redmond, La Pine and Sisters but welcomes any County resident to apply. PHAB welcomes volunteers to apply who are from the medical or insurance industries and individuals with a background or interest in public health. Advisory Board members are volunteers and are not compensated. Membership requires attendance at monthly meetings and a sincere interest in promoting the health of citizens in Central Oregon. Each Board member term of service is three years in length. Groundwater Protection Project Steering Committee

The South Deschutes and North Klamath County Groundwater Protection Project Steering committee is inviting people with expertise in groundwater-related issues to provide the committee with information. This month’s expert is Jason Churchill, of Orenco Systems. Orenco develops wastewater management systems for individual properties and small communities. Please note that this meeting will be held on Wednesday, June 15, 2011, instead of our usual “first Tuesday of the month” schedule. COCC Closing Admissions For Summer Term Early

Despite adding classrooms and both part-time and fulltime faculty positions, Central Oregon Community College is unable to continue to accommodate the number of registrations and closed the admissions process for summer term as of 5pm on Monday, June 13. Individuals who have applied before the deadline, but not yet scheduled testing and advising, should continue with their plans for testing and advising. The college has closed admissions before the beginning of the term several times in the last two years. By closing off admissions early, COCC is better able to serve students already admitted but not yet in classes. The college has added 75 additional sections compared to summer term 2010. However, enrollment is up 13.3 percent compared to one year ago. There are currently 345 students whose class schedules consist only of wait-listed classes. Those who sign up for music performance or contracted classes will still be served. Additionally, COCC’s noncredit Community Learning program, Adult Basic Skills, Business Development, College Now/Tech Prep and Transfer programs will continue to register students through the normal process.

LAVENDER COTTAGE • OWNER: CHRISTINA PILLADO So, Christina, when was your business founded? “I opened the business on September 16th, 2009. It was located by the feed store on Reed Road. We moved to the current location right after the first of the year.”

Who are the main players at Lavender Cottage? “Nova Dibala and Judy Roggy help me in the shop and at the teas. They are my partners in crime and Lavender Cottage would not exist without the two of them! Norma Lawson finds antiques for us and, of course, I am in the shop most of the time.”

Why do you work, live and play in La Pine? “I moved from the East Coast out West and I knew I wanted to stay on the West Coast. La Pine had the right property for me and this is where I settled. My father lives in Bend, so I am close. I love it here!” What is the potential for growth for Lavender Cottage? “It’s huge! After moving to the new location, we are having more teas all of the time and we have more antiques, collectibles, gift items, bath products and I am adding bulk herbs and spices - even potpourris - to the store.”

What is your business’s great challenge? “Keeping my teas stocked. When I get in one of the customer favorites, like Scottish Caramel, it goes so quickly I have to reorder immediately. We are also growing the business and we need more room for everybody that comes in and everything we have to sell!” What is the biggest highlight of your career? “The highlight is definitely meeting all of the wonderful people who are becoming friends and support me here in the business and personally.”

What do you do to relax? “First, I love to read and I am also redecorating at home. Sometimes I just love sitting and having a sip of wine with friends, hiking the local trails or taking a leisurely walk, traveling a bit and going shopping for antiques. They all make me feel good. At home, I love to care for my animals, too.” Tell us something about yourself that few people know about: “That’s easy! I was not born in a state. Pennsylvania is a Commonwealth. Another thing is that I am a ‘PK’ or preacher’s kid. My Dad is a Lutheran Minister. Lastly, I have traveled to Bali three times and I loved it there, too!” (Christina actually had a jewelry import business at the time in Pennsylvania.)

In terms of volunteering in the community, what is your personal contribution to the community? “What with running the business and getting settled in my home, the time I have left over is all about being a caretaker for my Dad, attending Nativity Lutheran Church in Bend, being active in the Chamber and working for Relay for Life every year.”

What are your plans for the future? “I want to expand the business so that I am carrying 100 teas and a business that matches! If I can get back to grad school, I would like to get my PhD in Children’s Literature and follow in my Dad’s footsteps and become a member of MENSA. Oh, and I would like to travel a little more, too. For the community, I would definitely like to start working to help women in need get personal products and clothing that they need to find work and improve the quality of their lives. We could work through the local non-profits to make that happen. My last wish would be to be sure that kids in the area get lots of books to read.” What advice would you give to community leaders? “I would like to tell them to support small business in every way possible!”

Do you have a mission? “We bloom where we are planted.” (She explained that women everywhere need to feel feminine and she wants her business to be a touchstone for that.) This reporter feels that Christina Pillado brings something unique and yes, beautiful, to the community by adding her little shop of goodies for all of us to enjoy!

Central Oregon Community College is offering hour-long nursing program orientation sessions at 4pm on Wednesday, June 15th, in Room 155, Boyle Education Center on the Bend campus; and at 4pm on Thursday, June 16th, in Room 305, Building 3, on the Redmond campus. The purpose of the meeting is to review the selection procedure for students interested in applying to COCC’s Associate of Applied Science in Nursing program as well as the prerequisites for applying and support courses necessary for the AAS degree. Summer Shootout Marble Tournament Registration Is Open

Registration is open for the Summer Shootout Marble Tournament, Saturday, June 18, 2011, at the Des Chutes Historical Museum. The event begins at 10am and features tournament play, marble free play throughout the day, lawn games, information on great summer vacation fun around the community, and other fun activities. A special exhibition game will be played by local celebrities for a chance to be crowned the Summer Shootout Marble Tournament Champion. New this year, marble competition will be in two categories: children ages 7 to 14 will compete for a brand new Trek bike from Sunnyside Sports, while high school age and adults can register to compete in the Young at Heart category for other great prizes. Previous marble playing experience not needed! A warm-up and marble ‘shooting’ lessons will be provided prior to beginning of tournament play. Registration is $10 per person. Registration information and forms are available by going to the Museum’s website, www.deschuteshistory.org. Tournament registration can be done up to the morning of the event. Admission to the museum will be free to all participants with the chance to win great prizes. In addition to the marble shootout, families will have the opportunity to visit additional family friendly organizations and learn about summer kid programs around our community. Sponsored by The Bulletin, The Peak 104.1, Powell’s Sweet Shoppe, and Miller Lumber, all proceeds from the event benefit the Des Chutes Historical Museum’s educational programs. The HIGH LAKES CAR CLUB is a group of people who have a common bond, in that they just love old cars! They started with about six people back in 1975 who met at the Gilchrist Restaurant, and later moved the meetings to La Pine for the convenience of more members. The Club now has 50-plus members, who come from as far as Crescent Lake, and still share the passion of owning -- driving, working on, and talking about -classic cars. But, they also have a great sense of Community, contributing to many local organizations from proceeds of their annual Car Show and annual Swap Meet. They have supported the Boys & Girls Club, La Pine Park & Rec, American Red Cross, La Pine Christmas Baskets, La Pine Senior Center, the Community Kitchen, Family & Community Together, Future Business Leaders of America (La Pine High School), Little Deschutes Grange…and many others. On Saturday, June 25th, they will be hosting their 13th Annual “SHOW-N-SHINE” Classic Car Show. This event will take place at the LA PINE SENIOR ACTIVITY CENTER on Huntington Road (next to Bi-Mart), from 9:00am to 4:00pm. You will see all makes and models of classic cars, from 1920s up to 1975 - Lots of ‘50s and ‘60s cars, and classic LIVE MUSIC by Ed Criss & his band! There will be awards and trophies for 1st and 2nd place in all classes, plus Best in Show, People’s Choice, and a prize for the club with the most entries. There will be a “50/50” drawing -- always a big hit! Lots of raffle prizes, including several CASINO PACKAGES, and various types of raffle baskets. This year the specialty raffle will be a 1971 CHEVROLET ¾ TON PICKUP (4-speed, 350 V-8 engine) with tickets at $5 each. Yes…it runs great! Tickets will be sold all day for all raffles, with drawings throughout the day, until all prizes are gone. The Valve Cover Races are a very popular part of the fun for young and old, and this year there will be a separate prize for the children’s division. Just build a race car from a valve cover and you could win! Information and rules for building a valve cover car are in the entry form packet. The “Engine Blow” pool is another event that everyone enjoys, with a cash prize for one lucky person. There will also be show tee shirts and hats for sale. The great “Flame-On Catering” Staff at the Senior Activity Center will offer breakfast from 7:00am to 9:00am. Then for lunch they will have an outdoor barbeque with hamburgers and hot dogs, and a Beverage Court (pop and water). For dessert they will offer pie, plus an ice cream stand. Make Pie a la Mode! This year there will also be a beer and wine garden for the adults. Lots of fun for the whole family -- SEE YOU THERE!
