The Deschutes County Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee (BPAC) has selected the 2009 “Big Chainring” Award recipients. Since 1996, the Big Chainring Awards have been awarded annually to honor individuals, businesses, and public agencies that have made significant contributions in the support of better bicycling and walking in Central Oregon. The awards will be presented at 5pm on Monday, June 29, at the Loft Wine Bar in downtown Bend during the Commute Options Award Party. This year’s winners include: John Rahm – Peter Hanson Memorial Award: The Peter Hanson Memorial Award recognizes individuals in the community that have provided outstanding voluntary contributions. John Rahm is the quintessential community volunteer to make bicycling better in Central Oregon. For several years, John Rahm has quietly but persistently labored over the idea of expanding Sisters’ premier mountain biking route -- the Peterson Ridge Trail. His efforts were rewarded with approval and cooperation from the Forest Service and the local equestrians. The result is what seems to be an entirely new trail, having two legs of the trail with multiple connectors and nearly doubled in length. In addition, John Rahm spearheaded initial work in laying out a bicycling and pedestrian plan for the City of Sisters. Many of his ideas are now reflected in the recently updated Transportation System Plan for the City of Sisters. John Rahm’s commitment and contributions are reflected in his recent appointment to head the Sisters Trails Committee, a post he has used effectively to keep the bicycling issues before the community. John Rahm represents the type of community-minded leader who leads by example, who motivates others to help, who never gives up, and who -- finally -- works graciously for all of us. Few others would better commemorate Peter Hansen than John Rahm. J.C. Lizza – Big Chainring Award for Individual: By actively participating in Bicycle Education programs for several years, J.C. Lizza has served his physical education students well with an activity that they will be able to enjoy for a lifetime. J.C. Lizza is a big promoter of the ODOT Safe Routes to School program by going beyond the call of duty, using his willingness and energy to cooperate closely with Commute Options in various safety programs. He assists in making cycling safer for students by teaching them the importance of helmet use, riding on properly adjusted bicycles, and providing active, on-bike training to 6th grade students. This veteran teacher’s enjoyment of cycling shines through to the students and has been especially critical to their low incidence of accident and injury. His shared joy is reflected in the high rate of participation as illustrated during this spring where he helped train over 200 students. Cascade Middle School and Deschutes County are fortunate to have a teaching professional like J.C. Lizza, who takes time from the PE and Health curriculum, to give the students important bicycle safety tools and education. Bend-La Pine School district – Big Chainring Award for Public Agency: By actively participating in Bicycle Education programs, Bend-La Pine schools have educated over 1,500 students during the fall 2008 and spring 2009 school terms. The district has been involved in a variety bicycle education programs since 1995. Cooperating closely with Commute Options, teachers and administrators at more than a dozen schools have made cycling safer for students by teaching them the importance of helmet use, riding on properly adjusted bicycles, and providing active, on-bike training to 5th and 6th grade students. The encouragement provided by the schools includes safe bicycle parking and facilities, and participation in the ODOT Safe Routes to Schools program. The school district’s role in facilitating cycling by students has been especially important to the low incidence of accident and injury and the high rate of participation. Youth in the Bend-La Pine region are well-served by the schools, who take time from the PE and Health curriculum to give the students important bicycle safety tools and education. Cascade Couriers – Big Chainring Award for Business: For over two years, Cascade Couriers has provided ecologically sound delivery services by bike transporting legal documents, composting, diapers, newspaper delivery, mail pickup and more for its customers. Cascade Couriers owner, Daniel Brewster, regularly reaches out to the local media, presenting a positive image of cycling, speaking on behalf of cyclists, and always hopeful about the unlimited possibilities cycling has for the community. Daniel Brewster and his employees always ride responsibly and safely. They are visible, positive representatives of the cycling community who are on our streets every day. Cascade Couriers is recognized for providing the Central Oregon community with an earth-friendly service and helping to build and maintain a positive image of cycling.

Kids’ Contest: Project Wildfire will award Grand Prize, First Place and Second Place prizes to winners of a coloring contest in three age group categories: under 6 yrs; 7-9 years, and 10-12 years. Children 12 and under are encouraged to submit their drawings addressing one of three categories: 1) What can you and your family do to protect your home from a wildfire? 2) Why should people prevent wildfires? 3) How can your family put out a campfire safely? All entries in the kids’ contest must be received no later than July 15, 2009. Artwork will be judged and prizes will be awarded at the 2009 Deschutes County Fair! The winning artwork will be displayed on the Project Wildfire and FireFree websites (www.projectwildfire.org and www. firefree.org) and may be used on future fire prevention signs across the county. Adult contest: The adult contest requires answers to five simple questions (the answers to which can be found in the publication) that are submitted for a random drawing.
