Special Road District #8 Special Road District #8 will meet on Tuesday, November 20th at 7:30pm at the Wackerbarth home, 16065 Twin Drive, La Pine. County Commissioner Tony DeBone will be our special guest and will discuss the South County twenty year plan. We have been discussing the road maintenance for the fall and winter and would welcome you to attend the next meeting to give any input you may have concerning the grading and snowplowing. We meet the third Tuesday of each month to discuss any work needed on the roads for Road District #8. Cause Of Pole Creek Fire Determined Fire investigators released their findings on the cause of the Pole Creek Fire today citing lightning as the probable cause. The Pole Creek Fire was discovered on September 9, 2012, and ultimately grew to 26,795 acres. The fire investigation team concluded the probable cause of the fire to be the result of lightning from a small isolated thunderstorm in the area of Pole Creek Trailhead late in the day on September 8, 2012. The team’s conclusion comes from numerous eye-witness interviews, lightning occurrence records, the exclusion of all other probable fire ignition possibilities. To reach the conclusion the investigation team analyzed evidence of lightning strikes at the origin area. The investigation team was challenged by the complete consumption of fuels at the origin, which left no physical evidence. A large diameter fir tree that burned and broke off at the base was present in the specific origin. The interior of the tree was burned out. Additionally, numerous trees with lightning scars were present in the general origin area indicating the propensity of lightning to strike that area. Eye-witness interviews, photographs, and videos documented an isolated thunderstorm, which built over the Pole Creek Trailhead late in the day on September 8, 2012 and further supported lightning as the cause of the fire. Several eye-witnesses independently reported lightning ground-strikes in the area. The possibility of holdover lightning was considered by the team because lightning strikes were recorded late on August 5, 2012 within the vicinity of the Pole Creek Fire’s origin. However, because of the significant time period between the last documented lightning storm and the ignition of the Pole Creek Fire, along with the extreme fuel models and conditions at the origin, the team determined it was unlikely the cause was holdover lightning. The origin of the Pole Creek Fire is quite remote, a distance from roads and trails, and the dense fuels and ground cover in the area prior to the fire would make access to the area extremely difficult and time consuming, reducing the likelihood that the fire was intentionally set. The intensity of the fire activity, safety considerations, and the large number of witness interviews contributed to the length of time the investigative team needed to conduct a thorough investigation. The fire investigation team consisted of Washington and Oregon Forest Service Special Agents and Law Enforcement Officers, as well as an Oregon Department of Forestry/Oregon State Police fire investigator.

Former Oregon City resident, A. O. Bruce, passed peacefully in La Pine to be with his Lord on October 31, 2012, with his family at his side. A memorial service will be held November 19, 2012, at 2:00pm, at Good Shepherd Community Church where Bruce attended; 28986 SE Haley Road, Boring, Oregon. “Bruce” moved to Portland from Texas when he was 18 years old. Soon he met his future wife, Janice Brown, and was happily married for 52 years. He served his country in the Air Force Reserve. He had a successful business career as a partner at Arnold, Bruce, and Doerfler Insurance Agency. His many clients appreciated his knowledge, professionalism, integrity, honesty, and sense of humor. He loved to “kid around”. Bruce was a sportsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing trips with his family. As a great animal lover, his extended family included many dogs and horses. You could see him on weekends pursuing his hobby at rodeos; tie-down and team roping. His wife, Janice, joined him on the circuit as a barrel racer. They shared wonderful times with their rodeo friends. Above all, Bruce was a dedicated family man. He loved his family steadfastly and was a devoted husband and father. He always thought of his family first and himself second. He is survived by his wife, Janice, of Bend, OR; his daughter, Tami (T.J.) Bruce of La Pine; his son, Dan Bruce (wife Kimalee) of Sandy; his grandson, Owen; two brothers and one sister. His family sincerely wishes to thank Bryon and Donna for the kind and loving care he received at their Happy Trails AFC in La Pine. JOYCE YVONNE ULMER November 30, 1921 - November 5, 2012

Joyce Yvonne Ulmer was born on November 30, 1921, on the family farm homesteaded by her grandfather, Phillip Ehling, in Abbyville, Kansas. She was the middle child of seven and the only red headed girl. Her parents, David and Gladys Ehling taught her a love for the Lord and she served him for her 91 years. At Abbyville High School she met her future husband, Donald, who was in her 1940 graduating class of five. Joyce who was known to most of her friends by her middle name Yvonne or Von served her country by making ailerons for Cessna Bobcats during World War II at Hutchinson, Kansas. Von went to nail spitting school for two weeks to learn to turn the head of a nail with her tongue. She would often wake up in the middle of the night thinking her mouth was full of nails. Von also worked for civil service at Wright Field in Dayton, Ohio in 1944. Von married her merchant marine and they started their family with two sons, Clark Dale and Dennis Meredith. Then they moved to California and were further blessed with two daughters, Judith Claire, and Donna Marie. They founded two churches and helped build one in Oxnard, California. She was an awesome stay at home working mother of the fifties and sixties. This Kool-aid mom sewed clothes for her daughters including mother and daughter look alike outfits for Easter. Her faith kept her strong which included adopting many of her children’s friends as her own and the house was usually full of people young and old. There was always room for one more. She loved being busy which included working in the yard, sewing, quilting, cooking and serving her Lord as a Sunday school teacher, in the women’s club and singing in the choir. They lived in California for 33 years and then retired to La Pine, Oregon in 1987. They lived there until three years ago when they returned to California as residents of Leisure Village in Camarillo. She was a member of the Camarillo Christian Church. In October they celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary. She will be remembered best for her ability to put anyone at ease with her faith, understanding, listening heart and a willingness to help. Her grandson recently saw a sign in a window that he thought summed it up best. “You may enter this house a stranger but you will leave a friend”. Survivors include her husband, Donald; a son, Clark of Oxnard, CA; 2 daughters, Judi Ulmer, of Camarillo, CA; Donna Sharpe, Lake Hughes, CA; 8 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; 2 brothers, Gordon Ehling of Abbyville, Kansas, and Dewey Ehling of Port Angeles, Washington and a sister, Daveyne Pugh, of Washington, Illinois. She was preceded in death by a son, Dennis; a brother, Gerald Ehling; and two sisters, Jane Watts and Elaine Foster. In lieu of flowers the family requests a donation to the Los Angeles Children’s Hospital. Memorial Services were held at Conejo Mountain, the Chapel of the Islands.

District #3 of Oregon’s Old Time Fiddlers Association in Central Oregon will return to second Sundays for their monthly music jams that provide music for listening and dancing, from December 2012 to March 2013 at the VFW Hall located at 1836 SW Veterans Way in Redmond. Oregon Old Time Fiddlers in District #3 Central Oregon have been busy providing Fiddling and Old Time Music for the public to listen and dance to at the VFW Hall in Redmond these past months. “We have had a terrific turnout for the events we held this year”, reports Ron Odegard OOTFA #3, Vice Chairman. “With Winter approaching we will be returning to the second Sundays of the month to hold the monthly events with the first one on December 9th,” reports Roland White District #3 Chairman. (The one scheduled for November is cancelled due to Veterans’ Day activities). District #3 has added two additional programs to the monthly jam format with an hour of Old Time Fiddling Music from 12:00-1:00pm. This program will include junior, adult and senior fiddlers from the region. The dance program will be at its usual time from 1:00pm to 3:30pm. The second program is for non-performing Old Time musicians with an informal acoustic jam in the Auxiliary room of the VFW hall from 1:00-3:00. The public is warmly invited to attend the newly added Fiddlers program, informal jam or dance music program for free, however donations are gladly accepted. Available at the event the public is invited to join the membership in the Oregon Old Time Fiddlers (OOTFA) for $20 per year. Let’s Bring Adult Education To Newberry Country

The Greater La Pine Adult Education Committee works to develop education for adults in our community. The goal of the group is to support both noncredit and credit courses that are accessible to adults of all ages, needs, and interests. Public Comments For BLM Transfer On August 10, 2012, President Obama signed the La Pine Land Conveyance Act (the Act), Public Law 112-164, which transfers (conveys) the ownership of about 910 acres of public lands administered by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to Deschutes County and the City of La Pine. The lands will be conveyed subject to valid and existing rights. The Act transfers three separate parcels of land within and adjacent to the City of La Pine, in southern Deschutes County. Parcel A is 150 acres and will be conveyed for outdoor recreation, open space, or public parks, including a rodeo ground. Parcel B is approximately 750 acres and will be conveyed for a public sewer system. Parcel C is 3.26 acres and will be conveyed for a public library, public park, or open space. According to the Act, if the land is not used for the purposes described above, the ownership shall, at the discretion of the Secretary of the Department of the Interior, revert to the United States. The La Pine Land Conveyance Act was first proposed in 2009 and is the result of the collaborative efforts of the La Pine community, the Deschutes County Commissioners and the Congressional delegation. Human Origins Lecture The last lecture in the “How Did We Get Here? THE TACKLE BOX While we are in the regular “off ” season, we do have the opportunity to take a good look at our supplies and tackle and with a good grasp on our inventory we will better be able to see if we need to do any repairs on rods, reels or just generally cleaning up the ‘ole tackle box. I find that I have clippings of line I have cut off, and hooks that need to be trimmed from tie line on the eyes as I have removed them that somehow find their way into my tackle box hook department. I try to be diligent in keeping a clean house in my tackle box, but occasionally I have either had my hands full or didn’t want to take the time to be extra neat about removing lures or hooks from a line while changing the rig, and the next thing I know... a messy tackle box is what I end up with. This is a great time to take care of those little details and clean up the messes we made while frantically searching for the perfect rig on that one day when we were in the heat of the Fish On! mode. By now, we should have our boats all winterized, ready for the cold weather, and sitting inside and watching the snow fly is a great time for us to do a little tidying up of our summer fun. Bring out the photos and remember the great times we all had while the weather was all about fishing on those early summer mornings, and getting ready for the up-coming season is all about being organized and having things in order, so you can replace the pieces that need it and look for those little treasures you just HAVE to have! Tackle box readiness and organization are the goals for this week, so we can enjoy these winter months and still feel like we are being in touch with our favorite sport! Fish On!
