2022 Deschutes County Fair & Rodeo Broke Earnings Records for Second Straight Year

Attendance at the 2022 Deschutes County Fair & Rodeo was back to pre-pandemic levels — and then some — with over 164,000 visitors, almost 30,000 attendees at the rodeo and millions of dollars in revenue.

This year’s fair and rodeo broke records across the board. The largest single day fair attendance and admissions revenue in its history was on Aug. 6, with almost 50,000 attendees.

Admissions revenue was up overall with about a $43,000 increase from last year for a total $747,000, setting a new record. Food and non-alcoholic beverage sales broke $1 million for the first time in the fair’s history, grossing over $1.15 million. The youth livestock auction also saw its highest dollar amount in fair history, earning approximately $1.75 million in proceeds with sales and add-ons.

Historical Haunt Walks Return to Deschutes Historical Museum October 14 & 15

Historical Haunts of Downtown Bend walking tours has been sharing the history and haunts of Bend’s downtown district since 2010. This year, three additional one-hour tours have been added on both Friday and Saturday, bringing the total to 32 tours.

Each walking tour starts at the museum and ends in Downtown Bend, approximately one mile in length of flat walkways.

Tickets will be sold online only through Eventbrite.com beginning Oct. 1. This is a popular fundraiser and membership drive for the museum, and tickets do sell quickly.

Deschutes National Forest Begins Closing Summer Operations for Season

Deschutes National Forest has started to close its summer operations and facilities for the 2022 season.

Lava Lands Visitor Center will close on Oct. 9; and Paulina Peak Road in the Newberry Caldera on Oct. 5 for road maintenance.

Paulina Visitor Center has already closed for the season.

Boat docks are already being removed around the forest to prevent damage during the winter months. Dock removal should be finished by mid-October.

Deschutes Public Library Holds Sixth Annual Pumpkin Decorating Contest

Halloween means the return of the Deschutes Public Library’s annual pumpkin decorating contest, in which participants bedazzle, draw, paint, feather, or dress up their pumpkins for display at all library locations.

Entries, which must be inspired by a book or character from a book, need to be delivered Oct. 11 – 15 to any DPL location during regular hours. (No late or early submissions, please.)

Pumpkins may not be carved, cut, or hollowed out, nor are any candles, electrical devices, or vulgarity of any kind permitted. One entry per person.

Entry forms are available online, as well as at all Deschutes Public Library locations.

Restoration Project Creates Artificial Beaver Dams

Sisters Ranger District and Heart of Oregon Corps have teamed up for a wetland restoration project along trails in the Glaze Meadow Old-Growth Area on the Deschutes National Forest, five miles west of Sisters.

Beavers traditionally built dams in this wetland but have not been active in the past 10 years. The Forest Service is recreating the historic role of beaver in the wetland by building small dams using natural materials and raising the ground water level in the wetland.

Prior to implementation, native freshwater mussels were collected and relocated outside of the project area so they would not be affected during beaver dam construction.

Crooked River & Ochoco Creek Closed to Fishing

The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife announced Thursday that the Crooked River and Ochoco Creek will be closed to fishing due to low water flows until at least Oct. 31.

According to Jerry George, ODFW district fish biologist, “While the closure will help protect fish congregating in the limited waters available, ODFW still anticipates a reduction in the size of these fish populations due to the low flows. These populations can rebound relatively quickly if conditions improve, but that will require a lot more rain and snow than we have been seeing in recent years.”

Two More 2022 Play Days Scheduled at La Pine Rodeo Grounds

La Pine Rodeo Association has one more Play Day this year on Oct. 28, and invites people of all ages to participate -- from new, inexperienced riders who are often on a lead line to those who are want to gain extra experience in between professional events.

Play Days, which start a 9 a.m., are a series of timed events where the horse and rider must complete a pattern while being timed. In addition to family members, public spectators are welcome to come cheer on riders.

Planned events include: Gaited Keyhole, Flags, Birangle, 2-Pole Run, Hour Glass, Big M, and Turn-n-Burn. The Rodeo Association emphasizes that Play Days follow OHSET rules and SOG’s (Standard Operating Guidelines) including those for patterns and dimensions. Helmets are required for all riders under 18 years of age.

Smith Rock Ranch Pumpkin Patch

As the name suggests, this patch has unmatched views of the nearby Smith Rock formation, a popular area for hikers and mountain climbers.

The Smith Rock Pumpkin Patch is owned and operated by the Smith Rock Ranch, a farm specializing in onion, carrot and grass seed, as well as hay, pumpkins and squash.

The ranch is run by the Lisignoli family, one of the first families to start farming pumpkins in Central Oregon. Back in 1998, locals thought the family was crazy for trying to grow pumpkins, but their hard work has seriously paid off, as multiple generations of Oregon families have made it a tradition to spend their October here. Among the attractions, in addition to the pumpkin patch, are a harvest market offering fresh farm produce, raw honeys, jams, and decorations; and a corn maize with a theme that changes annually.

The Smith Rock Pumpkin Patch also offers a Western shooting gallery, pony rides and horse-drawn carriages, pumpkin cannons, a petting zoo, barnyard putt-putt, live music, and even a dog park.

DD Ranch Pumpkin Patch

The DD Ranch, which also sits near the base of Smith Rock, boasts some of the area’s highest-quality, organic meats. None of their animals, from the cows and sheep to pigs and chickens, are raised with hormones, antibiotic feed or any other fillers. The ranch itself also swears to never use chemical herbicides, pesticides or fertilizers in an effort to preserve the organic quality of their products, which also include eggs and raw honey.

In addition to picking out a pumpkin at the DD Ranch, attractions include pony and Clydesdale rides, a petting zoo, a hayride, hay maze, a pedal go-kart course, a cowboy arcade where guests can shoot bows, bb guns and a massive slingshot, and several food vendors.

Heart of Oregon Corps Announces Increased Stipends for Young Adults

HOC has announced 30 percent increases in its stipend-based job training programs: YouthBuild and High Desert Conservation Corps.

Youth and young adults in these programs earn stipends while learning job skills during AmeriCorps service. AmeriCorps service projects include constructing affordable housing, supporting nonprofit childcare centers and improving public lands. After completion, young adults also earn a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award, a benefit similar to a scholarship that lasts seven years and can go towards higher education or vocational certifications.

Young adults ages 16-24 in Deschutes, Crook and Jefferson County looking for jobs, national service positions or high school equivalency programs are invited to apply online for either of these programs. One Class at a Time’ Partnership Awards $500 to LPHS Science Teacher

Mid Oregon Credit and NewsChannel 21 (KTVZ), partners in a program that awards “much-needed money to classrooms,” said on-air anchor/producer Lee Anderson, chose La Pine High School’s science and math teacher Joe Padilla as its first $500 recipient of the 2022-2023 school year.

Padilla, who knows that “hands-on learning can at times be more effective than what students find in a book or online,” will use the money received from the One Class at a Time program to provide “access to new Vernier probes for measuring UV radiation as they study the seasons.” As he explained, “Science equipment is updating, just like technology in our world. It’s expensive to keep the classroom up to date.”

Specifically, the upgraded equipment will be used in “one of the labs we do that tests the SPF of sunscreens. The students get to see it really does work,” he said. Added Anderson, “The $500 in probes will benefit dozens of the 400 students at La Pine High.”

One of those students, Grace Bays, agrees. “I want to go into the medical field, and I think this will transfer to what I’ll be doing working with equipment later in life.”

Presenting the $500 check to Padilla’s classroom had a special significance for Tiffany Zeiler, La Pine branch manager: “I attended La Pine High School and went to science classes in this very room, so it’s really fun to come back and represent Mid Oregon Credit Union.”

(Recipients of $500 through the One Class at a Time program are selected monthly during the school year. Teachers interested in applying for the assistance should contact their principals with ideas. Other recipients have included La Pine High School’s Life Skills Program. Jefferson County Middle School, Culver Elementary, and Sisters High School Life Skills Class.)

Credit for this collaborative effort between the La Pine Chamber and Frontier Days goes to Chamber social media and website staffer Karen Rippberger – whose storytelling abilities came to light after brainstorming an entertaining way to showcase La Pine and surrounding areas, as well as other places to visit around Oregon.

Crusty Crab has been making his way to his new home in La Pine via some amazing locations and adventures that will brighten your day. He travels with favorite lunchboxes and his trusty “not so smart” phone, providing a perspective on places such as a tiny park in Portland and the Painted Hills in John Day. Crusty loves Oregon and the entire collection of “persons” he meets along his trek.

We can’t just focus on the “bad news” right? We must strive to see the bright future, rather than constantly bemoan current events. La Pine is a wonderful place to live and create a business that suits your lifestyle – perhaps even choosing your hours around favorite outdoor (or indoor) activities. It’s hard to walk that balance beam of being a small business owner while maintaining a certain “quality of life”. We all get mired in the day to day and it can start to color how we look at life in general.
