HALLOWEEN FUN CAN BE STRESSFUL Halloween can be fun for both children and adults. However, this is a time that can be stressful and fearful for your pets; the loud noises can easily frighten and excite your pet.

When you combine the noise of children, horns, whistles and strange costumes with your pet, it can be stressful enough that they make a break for the door.

IMPULSE ELECTRIC, LLC • Owners: Michael & Kaisa Hoover So, Mike, when was your business founded? “We were founded early this year and so we are a new business. We also own a business that was established in 1947 located in Forest Grove.” (It is the family’s business).

Who are the main players at Impulse Electric? “My wife, Kaisa, and myself. She’s the brains and I’m the brawn!”

Why do you work, live and play in La Pine? “I snowmobiled here for years in the Central Oregon area. We looked around because there are a lot of changes in the valley and we wanted to be where we loved to play. By starting on the north end of Central Oregon, in Sisters, we worked our way through the entire area, and when we found out that real estate prices were very attractive in La Pine, we made our decision. When you add to that the notion that the people are friendly and nicer in La Pine than some of the other places, it was a deal. We like the small town feel and we love the winter. 46 years of rain was enough. The rain in the valley was awful this last year. We will finally have a real winter here!”

What is the potential for growth for your electric business? “I think the potential for growth is only limited by the economic times. There is only the economy to consider. We are both ambitious, we are serious about staying here and we want to get our business off the ground and to be successful.”

What is your business’s great challenge? “The greatest challenge is overcoming the current economic state. Getting our name out there and showing people that we do quality work at a fair price is very important. And, we want to prove that we are honest, hardworking La Pine business people.”

What is the biggest highlight of your career? “Getting to work side-by-side with my Dad for 2 years. I also loved it when I was running projects out at Intel. I spent 7 years working for them through a contractor in Aloha. I got to do it all!”

What do you do to relax? “I like to spend time with my family, enjoying the outdoors. My number one sport since I was 4 is riding on a snowmobile. It’s my favorite. Camping, fly-fishing, hiking are wonderful, too. We have two young children and they are with us outside all of the time.”

Tell us something about yourself that few people know about: “I don’t really have any secrets, but I am a pilot. I don’t fly often anymore. Originally, I was going to make it a career and then life happened! I didn’t want to be away from my family for days on end, like commercial pilots who are always gone. Pilots are just glorified bus drivers! That’s all you really are!”

In terms of volunteering in the community, what is your personal contribution to the community? “We are now Chamber members and any other opportunities to volunteer are always welcome. Our family has a history of being active in our community. I am about to put a light in at the flagpole soon for Linda Stephenson as soon as she gets ahold of me!” (Hard to get ahold of Linda after she closes L&S Gardens for the fall.)

What are your plans for the future? “We want to get a foothold in in the community. We want to find our niche here and we are looking for everything from a new church to establishing friendships and good business relationships.”

What advice would you give to community leaders? “I would like to see more events like the business fair. I like the fact that the Chamber’s Dan Varcoe seems to be proactive. I am hoping that we see more of that type of opportunity for us in the future!”

Do you have a mission? “So far, we have no official words to live by, but we want to provide good quality, prompt service at a fair price and work on increasing business in the area. We will focus on La Pine.”

OHSET Meeting

La Pine High School Equestrian Team (OHSET) invites all interested athletes and parents to attend an informational meeting on Tuesday, November 1st at 6:30pm in the La Pine High School Library. The 2011-2012 season and riding practices will be starting in December. Registration packets are available at LPHS office; please pick up and fill out before the meeting. The Tackle Box With a few final days of fishing left in the trout season for 2011, we are looking for a great day on the water, and what we catch is a little less of a goal, rather than just a nice day.

Spending some time and a few hours watching the fall colors take over the few deciduous trees we may see randomly here and there.

Take your camera, as the fall burning lends to some great sunsets if you are on the water late enough and with the fall colors, it lends to some spectacular photo opportunities.

Many folks are hunting, so some of the lakes are a little less crowded, making for a more relaxed fishing experience.

Ochoco Reservoir has had some great fishing for Crappie and even though they may lack in size or girth, they are great fun to fish for and put up a good fight! If you get in on a good school, they are a really fun fish to catch especially for the kids - easy to hook and take a little to land.

If you get a chance to hunt a little and fish a little this fall, remember to take a kid, and if they are 16 and under, they need to have a PFD, or the Hunter Orange on, to be safe and legal.

Enjoy these final fishing days and have a safe and enjoyable day in the outdoors.

$1,000 Grants Available For Youth Projects Applications Due By October 29

Middle and high school youth in Deschutes, Crook and Jefferson Counties may now apply for INSPIRE grants to fund youth-led community projects that promote health. The deadline for youth to apply for the grants is Saturday, October 29.

The INSPIRE project challenges groups of youth (ages 11 to 18 years of age) to create projects that help community members make positive choices about health and peer relationships. After all granted projects are complete, a celebration will be held in May 2012 to share the efforts and outcomes of the INSPIRE projects.

Assistance is available to help complete project grant application to youth and their planning teams by calling the phone number below.

INSPIRE (Imagine, Navigate, Share, Practice, Influence, Respect and Engage), is supported by the Deschutes County Children & Families Commission, the Central Oregon community and Deschutes County partners. The mission of INSPIRE is youth engagement and empowerment for a healthier community.

...is the recipient of a grant award of $1,000 from Ronald McDonald House Charities local and global offices.

CASA Board member Sarah E. Harlow states “the Ronald McDonald House Charities support of “The Voice of Hope” project, providing CASA with funds that are essential to reaching our goal of providing a CASA advocate for the most vulnerable children in Central Oregon.”

The Voice of Hope project is designed to reduce and break the cycle of child abuse and neglect by providing a highly trained community volunteer for every child in need. This strategy was chosen because there is a significant value to the children served, if high-quality volunteers are consistently cultivated and retained with CASA’s focus of “I am for the child”.

CASA of Central Oregon was established in 2005 with a merger of the Deschutes County and the Crooked River CASA Programs which had existed in Central Oregon since 1992. We service the counties of Deschutes, Jefferson and Crook with offices located in Bend, Madras, and Prineville respectively. Our goal is to provide a volunteer advocate for every abused and neglected child in Central Oregon. Each month there are roughly 80 children in Central Oregon in need of a CASA volunteer to guide them through the court system.

Beverly June Snyder of La Pine, Oregon, died on Thursday, October 13, 2011. She was 94 years old.

James Derbyshire, of Bend, Oregon, passed away on Wednesday, October 5, 2011. He was 88.

A celebration of Beverly’s life will take place on Thursday, October 27, 2011 at 11am at High Lakes Christian Church in La Pine.

A celebration of James’ life will take place on Wednesday, November 16, 2011 at 2pm at the American Legion in La Pine, with a buffet following.

Beverly was born July 8, 1917 in San Bernardino, California. She grew up in the Los Angeles area and moved to Arizona in 1973. She married Ellsworth Snyder on November 18, 1939 in Santa Monica, California. She graduated in 1936 from Marinello’s Beauty School in Los Angeles.

James was born November 13, 1922, in Brooklyn, New York. He had lived in Oregon since 1984.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ellsworth.

James was married to his loving wife, Dorothy, for 27 years. He was a proud veteran of World War II. James was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Beverly was a charter member of Hope United Methodist Church in Bullhead City, Arizona. She was also a member of Hope Women’s Group and the Hope Red Hat Society, as well as being a past member of the Rock Club in Bullhead City. Beverly attended High Lakes Christian Church in La Pine for many years.

She attended many functions at the La Pine Senior Center and was also an active member of the La Pine Red Hat Group at the Senior Center. She enjoyed ceramics and artificial flower arrangement.

Survivors include her daughter, Leah Stafford of La Pine, Oregon; her son, Dennis Snyder of Northridge, California; six grandchildren, ten greatgrandchildren, four step-great-grandchildren, and two great-greatgrandchildren.

The Honor Guard of La Pine American Legion Post 45 announces a service to honor deceased veterans with a presentation of a three-volley gun salute and playing of taps at the veteran’s memorial service. A flag folding ceremony and presentation of the flag is also available. This is a free service offered to veterans regardless of their membership in any veteran organization.

The Honor Guard of La Pine American Legion Post 45 is also available to present the colors and lead the Pledge to Allegiance at the opening of any meeting or special celebration.

The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 45 needs help from the community. We send care packages to deployed troops each month. We need your help filling these boxes. On an average, we send 25 to 30 boxes each month. A few ideas of what we send are: popcorn, Top Ramen, hard candy, gum, jerky (beef/venison), snacks, protein bars, powdered juice drinks, Spam, Vienna Sausages, hand sanitizer, non-scented baby wipes, toothbrushes, foot powder, razors, deodorant (non-scented). HALLOWEEN PET SAFETY TIPS

Humans love to celebrate Halloween with costumes, candy and parties. These may be fun for us, but can be a stressful experience for our companion animals.

Our pets do not understand why family members transformed into a bumble bee and why scary people keep ringing the doorbell and yelling “trick-or-treat.”

DON’T LEAVE your pets out in the yard on Halloween: Pets can be frightened by all the activity and costumes. Pets left alone can be teased and possibly escape from gates being left open.

DURING TRICK-OR-TREAT HOURS, keep your pet safe in a room with a radio or television on. If the doorbell upsets your pet, post a note for trick-or-treaters to knock on the door.

BE CAREFUL of pets around a lit pumpkin: Pets may knock it over and cause a fire.

Curious kittens especially run the risk of getting burned. Use battery powered pumpkin lights.

IF YOU ARE THINKING OF DRESSING YOUR PET IN A COSTUME, CONSIDER THESE THINGS: • Make sure your pet likes to wear costumes. Try it on before the big night.

• The costume should be pet friendly: comfortable to wear and their movement and vision should not be hindered.

• Your pet should have current ID on at all times.

• If you are out in the dark, make sure your pet is visible with reflective tape or lights.

• For pets that do not like costumes but you want them to join in the festivities, dress your pet in a decorative Halloween collar, scarf or leash.

CANDY, ESPECIALLY CHOCOLATE, can be dangerous to pets.

• Keep candy out of paws reach.

• Large quantities of candy and their wrappers can cause digestive upset.

• The theobromine in chocolate is toxic to pets in large quantities proportional to their size.

HALLOWEEN PARTIES CAN BE STRESSFUL AND FRIGHTENING FOR PETS. • Keep pets safe in a quiet room as trick or treaters come to the door or during a party. The costumes and crowds can be overwhelming.

While this can be a fun time for people and pets alike, remember that your pets are depending on you to keep them safe from the goblins and dangers that this holiday brings. If your companion gets scared and runs away from home, remember to call and visit your local Humane Society immediately.

COCC Hosts Exhibit Of “Oliver!” Set Designs

Central Oregon Community College is hosting an exhibit of set designs October 27 through November 23 in Pence Gallery in the Pinckney Center for the Arts on the Bend campus. The opening reception will be from 4:30 to 6:30pm on Thursday, October 27.

Initial sketches, as well as the actual sets, are included in the exhibit. The set pieces were designed

by Philip Newman and painted by COCC advanced painting students Eric Bauman, Hilary Bidlake, Kylie Burke, Rebecca Carroll, Kathleen Cooper, Richard Cressy, Tim Gardner, Jesper Hilts, Jaida Jasiorkowski, Allison Kirkpatrick, Kate Fitzpatrick, Luke McCready, Maddi Mueller, Philip Newman, Patrick O’Kelley, Martha Samco, Jennifer Sherman, Jan Sirhall and Ann Switzer.

The project was a collaboration between the COCC Fine Arts Department and Cascades Theatrical Company for the production of “Oliver! The Musical” last winter. The production was directed by Lilli Ann Linford-Foreman, professor of speech and drama at COCC.

Park Rules For La Pine

The La Pine Park & Recreation District will host an Open House on Thursday, November 3rd at 7:00pm at the John C. Johnson Building, across the parking lot from the La Pine Library. The District will be gathering feedback on the Draft Park Rules for La Pine Parks & Facilities.

The draft park rules were reviewed by the Board of Director’s on Tuesday, October 11, 2011 and are now available for public comment. To review the rules you can go to the District website www.lapineparks.org and submit your comments to Justin.cutler@ lapineparks.org - or attend the Open House on November 3rd.

The Board of Directors will review the comments at the November 8th General Meeting and make any adjustments to the rules based on community feedback. After adjustments are made, the Board will hold the first of two public hearings on December 14th and the second Public Hearing on January 10th. Thirty days later the rules will go into effect.

Half Price Yard Debris Recycling From Deschutes Recycling And FireFree

October 31st through November 12th, (closed Sunday, November 6th and Friday, November 11th) residents can recycle their yard debris at Deschutes Recycling for HALF PRICE – only $2 per cubic yard.

The yard debris will be recycled into compost and clean energy fuel.

FireFree encourages residents to complete their fall clean up and maintenance of defensible space by bringing branches, leaves, shrubs and pine needles to Deschutes Recycling during this event.

Residents can take advantage of this event as an alternative to fall burning and recycle the combustible vegetation inside the 30-100 feet of defensible space around their homes.

“Since the City of Bend banned debris burning in 2009, this program has become an excellent opportunity for greater Bend residents to recycle their debris inexpensively and legally,” says Katie Lighthall, FireFree Coordinator.

“This is a great opportunity to partner with FireFree in offering a 50% discount off yard debris recycling. We hope residents will be able to clean up their fall leaves and pine needles and help provide a safe FireFree space around their homes,” says Brad Bailey, President of Deschutes Recycling.

COCC Students Sponsor Free “Halloween Hall” For Kids

“Halloween Hall,” a free trick-or-treat program organized by Central Oregon Community College’s Juniper Hall staff and students, is slated for 6pm to 8pm on Monday, October 31, at the student residence hall on the COCC Bend campus.

The program will offer a safe, warm place for children 12 and under and their parents to enjoy the evening.

There will be free candy, prizes, games and hot cocoa.

In addition, COCC’s Latino Club will be hosting a “Dia De Los Muertos” program at Halloween Hall.

La Pine Moose Spaghetti Feed Fund Raiser

All-you-can-eat spaghetti feed for $7 on October 28th from 5-7pm, with raffles to be held throughout dinner. Open to the public, children of all ages welcome. All proceeds to benefit medical needs and expenses for Paul Cooley and family.

On August 10, 2011, Paul Cooley was injured in a dive accident on the Little Deschutes River. He was pulled from the river unconscious. When he woke, he was unable to move his hands and legs. He was then airlifted to St. Charles and after 22 hours of waiting, endured lengthy surgery.

Paul broke 4 vertebrae and is paralyzed from the chest down. He spent several days in ICU, followed by several weeks at St. Charles. Currently, he is in Portland undergoing intense therapy for spinal cord injury and is expected home on October 25th.
