La Pine Blue Lightning Mat Club

The La Pine Blue Lightning Mat Club (LBLMC) has some exciting news for the upcoming 2013-2014 season and is looking forward to getting wrestlers on the mat. LBLMC will be practicing in a new location and has expanded its volunteer board to include a broader range of community involvement. The La Pine Park and Recreation Board decided in their August meeting to enter into an agreement allowing LBLMC to hold practices at the La Pine Event Center. LBLMC is very excited to offer practices three days a week in wonderful, centrally located, facility. LBLMC Board Vice President Matt Dodson said, “The Event Center is a great building that will allow us to utilize all our mat space and be in a well recognized location that is easy for the whole community to access.” The mat club has roughly 3000 square feet of mat space, roughly 40 by 80 feet, that can accommodate more wrestlers than ever. Also the agreement will allow practices to continue into and including the Freestyle and Greco seasons through June. LBLMC Board secretary and wrestling parent, Deanna Underwood said about the new venue, “The added space will let parents sit in a comfortable area and watch the development of their young wrestler or wrestlers.” The Event Center has enough space that parents will be able to watch practice while no longer having to sit on the mats, but in chairs or bleachers provided by Parks and Rec. LBLMC Board President Toby Wilson said, “All in all we are very excited, for the added convenience the facility provides and, more important, that added opportunities we can give La Pine’s wrestlers.” In recent years LBLMC has had roughly 50 wrestlers each season. The board has been active to recruit new members and, in an effort to make the volunteer commitment easier to experience, have expanded the number of board members from 7 to 9. The two new positions will give the board a wider range of experience and input while also spreading out some of the day to day task that make volunteerism so difficult. In that regard the LBLMC board welcomes JR Lorimor and Joe De Luca. JR is the Branch Manager for Keller Supply Company and has worked there 22 years. He is a hunting/fishing extraordinaire and the owner/operator of Four Bar L outfitters. Joe is a Sargent with Deschutes County Sherriff Department and equally an outdoorsman extraordinaire. Joe is looking forward to, “… taking things up a notch!” Something La Pine’s tough competitors’ will look forward to. Joe and JR join; Pres. Toby Wilson, VP Matt Dodson, Treasurer Melissa Huck, Secretary Deanna Underwood, Kevin Huck, Jason Heutzenroeder, and Hyrum Smith on the mat club board. Board member Dave Kerr has chosen to step away from the board. His several years of service are greatly appreciated. The LBLMC originated in May of 2009 and has operated as an incorporated 501C3 since 2010. The La Pine Blue Lightning Mat Club would like to invite all interested parents and youth to join us for Parent Night on Tuesday, October 8, 6 pm at the La Pine Event Center. On that evening parents will be given season practice and tournament information. Wrestlers will be signed up so they are eligible to participate in the first home tournament on November 2. Apparel orders will be taken at that time for family members to purchase team gear and wrestlers who want the extra outfitting. While the October 8 meeting is not mandatory, attendances is very highly recommended. The 2013 – 2014 wrestling season is shaping up to be a good one. The Mat Club is excited about the direction of the program and opportunity to serve La Pine and coach a great bunch of kids. Check them out on Facebook or at lapinebluelightning.org Then join them this season for practice at the Event Center and competition all over the state.
