Save the Brave is putting on a five-day outdoor adventure next month for veterans in Central Oregon. The program is designed to facilitate healing from post-traumatic brain injury and physical pain by connecting veterans to outdoor therapeutic activities and non-traditional medical approaches. Several businesses have stepped in to help with fundraising to make the event free for those accepted to the program. They, in turn, will be responsible for traveling expenses to and from the locations. Those who require financial assistance would need to raise a minimum of $500, and Save the Brave will step in to cover the remaining balance for the flight.

Jefferson County Directing $750K In ARPA Funds to Three Industrial-Space Projects

The Family Access Network (FAN) recently received a $25,000 grant from Safeway Albertsons Foundation’s Nourishing Neighbors Program that aims to help individuals in need connect to resources that will reduce hunger. FAN places advocates directly in schools to remove barriers for children and families in Central Oregon, so they can find hope, help, and new possibilities. In addition to connecting individuals to food resources, advocates can assist families in need with clothing, safe shelter, health care, and much more. FAN strives to help families regain self-sufficiency, so kids can focus on school, not where their next meal will come from.

Jefferson County has awarded $750k of federal funding to three projects aimed at expanding the availability of industrial space across the county, where the volume of business has grown an estimated 30% over the past decade, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The awardees include Creations Northwest, LLC, which will oversee two projects: the construction of a 7,500-square-foot manufacturing/industrial building and a new 5,600-square-foot truck wash and business center facility between Culver Highway and Love’s Truck Stop; and Martin Fleck’s 7,500-square-foot expansion of the Eagle Ridge Industrial Complex. Jefferson County will provide permitting support, along with $250,000 in funding towards each project.

In April, the Bend Police Department launched a new communication tool called SPIDR Tech, which allows 911 and nonemergency dispatch callers and crime victims to share feedback and receive follow-up messages. Bend Police are now implementing the second phase of SPIDR Tech, which will allow the department to notify crime victims about case specifics. When an officer completes a case report that involves a victim, the victim will receive a message detailing the case number, the officer’s name, as well as a link to Victims’ Assistance and how to contact the department. If an arrest is made in the case, a second message will be sent to victims advising of that arrest.

On Monday, Aug. 22, Deschutes County Community Development will hold an open house and seek community feedback on draft goals and policies related to the Tumalo Community Plan (TCP) update. The plan serves as a guide for development, capital improvements, and land use planning in the Tumalo Rural Unincorporated Community boundary for a 20-year period, from The2020-2040.openhouse will begin at 6 p.m. on Aug. 22 in the Tumalo Community School gym, located at 19835 NE Second St.

Oregon’s Housing Stability Council awarded Woodhaven Community Housing more than $1.9 million as part of its 2022 LIFT Homeownership funding allocation for 19 deed-restricted, affordable owner-occupied housing units in southeast Bend, the start of a planned 95-unit development. The 19 affordable homes will be located between Daly Estates Drive and Pettigrew Road, with the first phase at 61635 Daly Estates Drive. WCH plans to begin the infrastructure work later this year and will begin the building in mid-2023. Homes will be available in 2024 to pre-approved buyers making less than 80% of the area median income.

Avelo Airlines has announced new nonstop service to Palm Springs, California from Central Oregon’s Redmond Municipal Airport (RDM). Avelo will fly this route twice weekly on Fridays and Mondays beginning November 11. The new route will operate on 189-seat Boeing Next-Generation 737-800 aircraft. In addition to Palm Springs, Avelo flies nonstop between RDM and Los Angeles’ Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR).

A rescue effort was recently undertaken by firefighter-paramedics from the La Pine Rural Fire District for a man who went swimming in a remote, rugged portion of the Upper Deschutes River and became trapped by the current. He ended up getting out on his own, but still prompted a reminder of the wild and scenic river’s dangers.

The 2022 Deschutes County Fair & Rodeo reported record-setting attendance and revenue numbers for its 102nd annual event. The overall attendance for the full event beat the previous record set in 2021, and Saturday’s attendance also broke the single day attendance record that was previously in 2021; as did revenues for carnival and food and beverage sales. Preliminary numbers indicate that Fair attendance increased by six percent from 2021. Preliminary numbers from the Deschutes County Youth Livestock Auction also show a record-setting sale, with initial sales numbers of approximately $1.4 million dollars in sales benefiting youth 4-H and FFA exhibitors from Deschutes County.

I just get credit for building her Thegreenhouses.”ownerof Little Deschutes Gardens and La Pine Landscaping Supply, which he started in 2009, Greb is being somewhat modest. After a successful career that included building custom homes and landscape maintenance, he never forgot his dream. “I always wanted to have a nursery, and decided to give it a go,” he recalled. “I ran it by myself for the first several years, with a few friends helping out on occasion,” subsequently joining forces with Johnson. “We work extremely well together,” the pair agreed. “Plus we’re both German and both Scorpios. Our relationship could be the love story of La Pine!” (The initials in CC’s Garden are derived from each of their first names.) Johnson, an émigré from California, “ran part of a nursery there, and worked as a florist,” in addition to building a house and acquiring three Siberian huskies – who transport her behind a sled in the winter and a scooter in the summer. Johnson is also experienced in retail after spending nine years at the local Bi-Mart. Their admittedly seasonal business – “from March to mid-October,” Greb specified – gives the two partners time to pursue other interests, such as golfing “when we can,” and building a tiny home and birdhouses, which are sold on the premises. They also thrive on off-the-grid camping at the area’s lakes and rivers, with Johnson’s three dogs and Greb’s two black German Shepherds as companions. Describing his operations, Greb said that “we have 33 different products, from trees and bushes to rock, dirt, compost, bark, and gravel. I do hundreds of deliveries a year.”

Johnson, newer at this trade than her partner, admitted that “the scariest part is forking out money to buy products, while the best part is going out there in the greenhouse and having it completely full. It feels amazing.”

Kaminek’s goal of “offering customers ice cream that is really simple and really good” has obviously “hit the sweet spot” for her La Pine clientele. Another flavor – smoked cream and whiskey butterscotch –was proposed by fellow entrepreneur Matt Huserik, whose popular food truck Junior’s Grill is parked adjacent to hers behind Badland’s Distillery, which provided the whiskey. “As my small batch, premium ice cream has cream and sugar as base ingredients, you can pretty much add anything,” explained Kaminek. “The sky is the limit,” In addition to seven basic options, she also offers rotating non-lactose-based choices that “have done shockingly well.”

Carolyn Maria Marstall of La Pine, Ore. passed away at her home very peacefully on July 13 with her children and other family members and friends present. She was 87 years old. A graveside service was held at the La Pine Community Cemetery on August 13. Carolyn was born on June 2, 1935 to Jack and Hazel Smith in Seaside Ore. She grew up around music, learned to play the piano at a young age, and the trombone in high school, and was a member of the Seaside High marching band. She was always singing and playing music with her family when growing up. Carolyn continued her love of music and, while raising her six children, started a band with her husband Joe Marstall in Philomath, Ore. After moving to Central Oregon, they continued playing music in private clubs and over on the coast, and were very popular as New Central Band – even recording several CDs. Carolyn learned to play the fiddle, was a member of Oregon Old Time Fiddlers, and won an award at the state level the first year she competed. Carolyn also enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping, as well as spending time with all of her family and during their gatherings. She brought so much love, laughter and the great joy of music to all of us, and there was never a time growing up we did not have her piano and guitar in our Carolynhouse. was preceded in death by her husband Joeseph E. Marstall; her parents Jack and Hazel Smith; her brother and sister-in-law Jack and Patty Smith; her son Danny Knolin and daughter Julie Knolin. She is survived by three sons: Larry Curtis, David Knolin and Joey Marstall; three daughters: Margy Wilkinson and husband Mark; Kathy Curtis, Theresa Case and husband Bill; seven grandchildren: Annie, Michelle, Jacob, Jamie, Danielle, Christopher and Katie; and nine great Agrandchildren.messagethat Carolyn wished to include: To my children - I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean, I hope you dance.
