La Pine’s Brenden Reeves Named to President’s List Brenden Reeves, an Environmental Science major from La Pine, has been named to Youngstown State University’s President’s List for achieving a perfect 4.0 grade point average in the Spring Semester 2021.

To be eligible for the President’s List, honorees must be full-time undergraduate students with a 4.0 GPA for least 12 semester hours of classes.

Youngstown State University is a comprehensive urban research university that offers nearly 13,000 students more than 135 undergraduate and graduate programs backed by a strong tradition of teaching, scholarship and public service.

Sunriver Festival Fair Returns July 24 With a theme of “Outdoor Overture,” Sunriver Music Festival’s Festival Faire will return July 24 to kick off the 44th season of the Sunriver Music Festival, which runs Aug. 14 - 23.

Tickets are $85 per person for the event, the premier fundraiser for SRMF’s Young Artists Scholarships and the festival’s worldclass concerts.

The event will be held at John Gray Amphitheater in Sunriver, with music provided by several Young Artists Scholarship recipients and strolling minstrels. The evening includes a sneak preview of the concert season, which consists of four classical concerts, pops concert and solo piano recital Aug. 14-23.

Deschutes County Seeks Applications for County College Program Deschutes County is accepting applications from residents for its 2021 County College program, which gives members of the community the opportunity to learn more about county services and programs.

Participants will hear from staff in various departments, participate in group discussions, and tour county facilities. Sessions are held on Tuesdays, starting at 5:15 p.m. The 10-week program begins on August 31 and concludes on November 2.

Applicants from a range of geographic areas are sought and interest in county programs and services is desired. Due to limited meeting space, not all applicants will be accepted into the program. To apply, visit www.deschutes.org/countycollege. The application deadline is Friday, July 30 at 5 p.m.

Family Access Network Receives $5,000 From TC Energy Foundation The Family Access Network (FAN) recently received a $5,000 grant from TC Energy Foundation for FAN advocate services in Central Oregon. Funds will be used to provide 50 children and their family members in need with life-changing services such as nourishing food, seasonally-appropriate clothing, stable housing, health care, school supplies, and much more.

“We are grateful for the support of the TC Energy Foundation, especially during these challenging times. Together, we are making a difference in the lives of local kids and families,” says Julie N. Lyche, executive director.

Family Access Network Receives $20,000 Grant from AT&T Foundation The Family Access Network (FAN) received a $20,000 grant from AT&T Foundation to help bridge the homework gap exacerbated

by COVID-19 through supporting rent relief efforts in Central Oregon. FAN was one of five nonprofits chosen throughout the state of Oregon to receive funding. A virtual check presentation took place on June 23rd. Funds from AT&T Foundation will be used

by FAN advocates to help families experiencing job loss, reduced hours, or illness remain housed. FAN believes that closing the homework gap begins by ensuring children have a safe home where they can focus on studying each day. Keeping kids housed will remove one large obstacle to their ability to excel.

By Andrea Hine, Contributing Writer “This year’s event was better in so many ways,” said Teri Myers, fresh (perhaps that’s not quite the word) from four days of nonstop activity at the 2021 Frontier Days festivities. “We had a good selection of vendors, food and live music, and oodles of people. Some 1,500 kids came to the fish booth alone!”

Admitting that the site posed challenges such as dust and bumpy ground – “we’re still a little bit of a start-up” – Myers was buoyed by the improvements that had been accomplished by Frontier Days volunteers in the months leading up to the annual event. “But we can always use more volunteers,” she noted, “especially younger people to take on the heavy, physical tasks.”

And how does Myers feel about next year? “I had a lot of fun, and would do it again in a heartbeat.” Commented her equally exhausted colleague Ann Gawith, who heads the Frontier Days Association, “I’d do it again as well, but not tomorrow.”

“Washington Federal and Curtis Cray have always been supportive, and consistently come through for us,” described Victoria Gardner, grant writer for La Pine’s Community Kitchen. “They’re wonderful.”

This most recent donation will go directly into Community Kitchen’s general operating fund to buy food and other necessities, she said. “All the money we receive goes right back out into the community.”

Gardner added that stemming the pandemic in Oregon has not resulted in a reduction of need among those assisted by the nonprofit. “In the first five months of this year, we served 10,000 meals, and distributed 114,000 pounds of food and groceries. Our services are always critical (and) donations make them possible.”

Like so many others, soon-to-be LPHS senior Desi Hanson, above right, was affected by the pandemic. But in her case, the 2020 Rodeo Queen had her triumphal tour shut down before it began, and was able to attend only one socially distant coronation event as a result.

However, the rodeo organization has done a beautiful thing in allowing Desi to reign for a second year and enjoy a full season of events while promoting what she loves – a passion for horses and animals.

Riding since she was a little girl, and also involved in 4H, Desi believes in the importance of the rodeo as a link between the “Old West” and today in terms of a commitment to agriculture, animals, and caring for the land. La Pine was born from those frontier times, and even 15 years after its establishment, the town maintains an old west feel in many ways.

A naturally shy person, Desi became excited about the Rodeo Court through Ashlyn Johnson, 2018 Rodeo Queen, and now eagerly accepts public speaking invitations -- using these opportunities to tout the virtues of La Pine Rodeo and all it does for the community and its members.

Her favorite event to watch is the tie-down roping series, due to their very technical yet theatrical nature, as well as the speed and precise maneuvering involved.

Grateful for the chance to represent La Pine and La Pine Rodeo for the rest of 2021, Desi looks forward to helping with the coronation and training of her successor. Driving her involvement is a passion for kids – to encourage them to love animals, and have fun connecting to rodeo and to all that makes rodeo possible.

Having had the pleasure of spending a little time with her, I say “La Pine, you have quite a Rodeo Queen representing you in Desi Hanson.”

Cyndi Davis, who has a catering company named Mrs. Smallz, “actually had people chasing me down to buy my cheesecake” when selling it for the first time at the 2019 Newberry Event.

By Andrea Hine, Contributing Writer “I’ve fallen in love with this town, and have found my purpose here – to provide a safety net for veterans and seniors in the area by preparing and delivering lunches to them three times a week. I feed a lot of folks,” said Cyndi Davis, whose Facebook posts announcing the day’s choices would appeal to even the most jaded appetites.

From sweet & sour chicken to corned beef Reuban wrap, from Swedish meatballs to homemade mac & cheese, from pulled pork sandwiches to beef stroganoff -- as well as a variety of soups and salads -- the meals are always freshly made and nutritious. Davis admitted that “the hardest part is keeping things going with fresh recipes. I love doing it, and people seem to enjoy what I make.

“They also trust me,” she added. “One day, for example, I offered watermelon gazpacho – who ever heard of that? – and sold 45 cups.” (Cold cantaloupe soup soon followed.)

Davis has been cooking “since I was very, very young, with a little input from my grandmother,” she recounted “Our mother had a job, and I was responsible for preparing the family’s meals.

Then after becoming a trauma nurse, and working 12- to 15-hour days while also studying for my Master of Science degree in nursing, I was feeding five children and their friends. I learned how to make meals that went together quickly and could feed a crowd. It was kind of an art.”

In addition to planning, preparing, boxing and delivering some 60 lunches three times a week (offered at half price to retired veterans and disabled seniors), Davis finds that her nursing expertise has made a difference. “I’ve gotten to know when my customers aren’t well, and have diagnosed conditions such as heart attack and stroke before they or family members realized what was going on. Lives have been saved as a result.”

Modest about detailing her accomplishments, Davis explained that “at a young age I was taught to perform an action because it’s the right thing to do, not because you’re looking for recognition. I do this because I care – I love these people.”

The tradition of Frontier Days was built from local groups and organizations joining together to celebrate Independence Day, perhaps make some much needed dollars for their respective projects, and come together as a community. (For example, does anyone remember the wonderful strawberry shortcake from the OORFPD, or the BBQ corn on the cob from the girl’s Basketball, or the tacos from the Community Kitchen?)

Some of the opportunities for fundraising are the daily kid’s games, the Kiddie Train, the parking management and garbage patrol; some of these tasks the Frontier Days pays the group, some the group charges the participants … we have even set groups up with midway style games in order for them to raise funds.

For a variety of reasons the culture of local groups taking on a piece of the Frontier Days event has fallen away over the years. We would love to see more participation from local groups in this way … it is that energy that makes our event such a delight for the folks that attend. It shows them what a wonderful community we have, folks that work together toward a common goal. Please join us in 2022!

The Reserve in the Pines – ‘Livable, Sustainable and Affordable’

By Andrea Hine, Contributing Writer “All 51 lots have been sold for Phase I of The Reserve in the Pines, and we’re moving ahead on Phases II & III (being developed simultaneously due to accelerated demand), where only about 25 percent of the lots remain unsold.

It’s very exciting,” commented Vicki Russell who, with her husband Vic Russell, is implementing their “painstaking” plans for all aspects of a 191-home development that “is different from anything else in the community.

“As La Pine residents ourselves, we’re not surprised at the positive response, as we’re well aware of the great need locally for affordable housing, and the lack of sufficient land on which to build,” she said.

“As we all realize, Deschutes County is a very desirable location for people to live – resulting in continuing escalation of home prices. According to the Beacon Appraisal Group’s report for June 2021, median prices in Bend and Redmond for single-family homes have hit record highs of $651k and $443,000 respectively. La Pine stands at $356k, up from $335k in the space of a month. The Reserve in the Pines is in a strong competitive position, and hopefully,” noted Russell, “we’ll be able to remain considerably under area median prices.

“But homes are only one aspect of The Reserve in the Pines,” she added. “Our intent is to provide a complete community for those who live there -- with three parks, 18-foot-wide paths going all the way through the development, places to gather (both inside and outside), a dog park, and underground sprinkler systems to combat fires. We even have a supplier who is babysitting 270 trees until they are mature enough to plant.”

Russell made the point that “La Pine itself has become quite the destination, with 20-minute access to lakes, and a relative lack of traffic, among other appealing factors. Residents of The Reserve in the Pines are within walking distance of downtown, an increasing number of retail options, health care and schools. If you had to choose a desirable place to live based on location, location, location – this is it.”

Added Vic Russell, ““Our goal is to ensure that the development is livable, sustainable and affordable for all ages and

lifestyles. We’re building something to share with everyone in La Pine. “I used to say that The Reserve in the Pines was my dream and Vicki’s nightmare. Now,” he amended, “I like to think that it has become her dream as well.”

Rickard Road: Groff Rd to US-20 Improvement (Bend Area) –Roadway excavation work will continue. Rickard Road is closed from the end of pavement east of Bozeman Trail to US-20 in order to construct the new paved roadway. St. Charles Gives $100,000 to Help Crook County Fire & Rescue Buy Ambulance St. Charles Health System is donating $100,000 to Crook County Fire & Rescue to help the district with its purchase of two new, state-of-the-art ambulances.

One of them is already in service, while the other is expected to arrive in September.

Each costs about $250,000, and will come equipped with several new features that will reduce strain on EMTs’ bodies and make both patients and EMTs safer and more secure, according to Crook County Fire & Rescue paramedic and Battalion Chief Jeremiah Kenfield.

For St. Charles, the donation isn’t just about maintaining the current level of care, but planning for the future of the community. “We’re fortunate to enjoy such a positive and productive history of working with Crook County Fire & Rescue,” said Shannon Edgar, chief nursing officer at St. Charles Prineville. “We certainly value their partnership, and we look forward to building on it for many years to come.”

— OBITUARIES — OBITUARY Melanie Habener

August 27, 1944 - June 21, 2021 Melanie (Miss Melle or Mama Hooty Tooty Wooties) Habener passed away suddenly on June 21, 2021 due to complications after a knee surgery she had back in December; her incision became infected and she just couldn’t bounce back after months on very strong antibiotics. All she wanted to do was to be able to walk again, so she could be in the kitchen cooking her magic and making her famous “sauce” and chicken soup.

She passed peacefully in her daughter’s home, where she lived in Lompoc, CA, surrounded by close family and friends.

Melanie was born on August 27, 1944, in Winchester Massachutes to Sebastian and Theresa Giuliano. She married Don Habener on August 29,1987; and they were married 27 years before Don (Papa) passed away in 2014. Melle had four siblings, Salvatore Giuliano and wife Ginny, Marlena Nilsen and husband David, Melinda Trimble, and Melissa Vicondoa and husband Chuck. Three daughters, Kristie Stavoli-Wood and her husband Robert Wood, Kim Treaster and Shellie Sheehan and her husband John; 11 grandchildren, Stephanie, Kendal, Joseph and his wife Patty, Alison, Lilly, Jimmy, Nick, Tyler, Kaylynn, Calvin and Caleb; and four great grandchildren, Aubrie, Amaiah, Layla, and Jake, who all knew her as “Noni”, they all adored her more than anything!

Melanie worked in the Aerospace industry at Vandenberg Air Force Base for many years, but her true passion was the time she spent doing events for the Air Force Association at VAFB. She was a true patriot who loved her country and military folks. She was dedicated to this organization for years and there was nobody better at what she did! Melle will always be remembered for her big hugs, her amazing smile, and her beautiful blue eyes. But most of all her BIG heart. She loved everyone and everyone loved her. She’s in heaven where she will have unlimited amounts of napkins, 1000 Island dressing, tomatoes, cans of whipped cream, all the Neil Diamond songs she wants to listen to, and it will be Christmas all year long!

This verse from 2Timothy 4:7 sent to me by my sister Shellie really says it all about my beautiful mother. “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” She will be missed!
