Summer Camp For Animal Lovers At Humane Society Of Central Oregon The Humane Society of Central Oregon’s Summer Camp Furry Friends is for children who love animals. Two camps, July 24-28 and August 7-11, 2017 will offer third through seventh grade students a camp designed for their age and interests. This is the purr-fect opportunity for children who want hands-on experience while learning about different types of animals. The program is designed to build confidence, teach responsibility, inspire empathy and increase their knowledge about animals. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a digestive condition that occurs when stomach acid flows backwards into the food pipe, also known as the esophagus. During digestion, the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) commonly opens to allow food to pass into the stomach and closes to block stomach acids from flowing back into the esophagus. When the LES does not close normally, stomach acid can flow backwards, causing inflammation in the esophagus. Symptoms of GERD may include heartburn. Medications that control stomach acid may be used to manage GERD. Antacids such as calcium supplements (Tums) may provide heartburn relief by getting rid of stomach acid. Side effects may include upset stomach, H-2 receptor blockers such as ranitidine (Zantac) work to decrease acid production. Side effects include headache. Protein pump inhibitors such as omeprazole (Prilosec) work to block acid production and to help heal the esophagus. Side effects include nausea.

History Pub Now Requires Reservations Due to its popularity, Deschutes Historical Museum’s History Pub at McMenamins’ Old St. Francis now requires reservations. Reservations can be made on the museum’s website, www.deschuteshistory.org. Reservations will open on the first of the month for the current month’s program. “The system allows the museum to accommodate those who can’t get in line at 4:30 or 5:00, which was a complaint we were hearing often from working folks,” said Kelly Cannon-Miller, Executive Director for the Deschutes Historical Museum. “While the system doesn’t guarantee a specific spot or the coveted tables, folks at least know there will be a seat for them.” The summer line up for History Pub is as follows: July 25: A History of Farmer’s Markets, High Desert Museum Curator Laura Ferguson; August 29: The Malheur Occupation and Public Lands in the West OSU Professor Emeritus William Robbins. Now in its seventh year, History Pub is a partnership between the Deschutes Historical Museum, the Oregon Encyclopedia, Oregon Historical Society, and McMenamins History. History Pub takes place the last Tuesday of the month, January through November, at McMenamins Old St. Francis in the Father Luke Room. Doors at 5:30pm, presentation at 7pm.

MVA: Burgess Road, La Pine At 12:37pm, Monday, June 26 La Pine Rural Fire Protection District firefighters responded to a multi-vehicle crash at 15989 Burgess Road that has resulted in one fatality. The vehicles involved in the crash were a compact pickup truck, a compact SUV, and a tow truck. Extrication was required and Burgess Road west of Day Road was closed for in determinant amount of time. La Pine Fire responded with a medic unit and rescue engine with eight firefighters. One patient was transported by Sunriver Fire paramedics to the La Pine Fire heliport and transferred to an Air Link helicopter. This patient did not survive to the hospital. Two other patients were transported to St. Charles Bend by a Crescent Fire ambulance. The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating.

Heat Precautions For Pets The Humane Society of Central Oregon (HSCO) would like to offer tips on keeping your pet safe in the heat. With the official arrival of summer this week, the best spot for your pet is inside a safe, cool house. Dogs and cats cannot cool their body temperatures as efficiently as humans. If your pet is outside during the day, remember to provide protection from the sun and plenty of fresh water. Remember that older, short muzzle and overweight dogs are more likely to overheat during hot weather. You can provide a wading pool to aid in cooling. Pets need exercise but do it in the cooler hours of the day. Exercise your dog in the morning or evening when temperatures and pavement are cool. The paw pads can get injured from the hot pavement and melted tar can get stuck to pad and hair. Press your hand on pavement for 10 seconds, and if it’s not tolerable for you, it’s too hot for your pets. Leaving your pet in a parked car can be a deadly mistake. The temperature inside a car can reach 120 degrees in a few minutes. Even partially open windows won’t protect your pet from heatstroke. Dogs in truck beds can suffer injury or heat stroke. Veterinarians know all too well dogs that have fallen out of the truck bed which resulted in severely injured dogs or motor vehicle accidents from people swerving to avoid the dog. If you cannot touch the hot truck bed with your bare hand, your dog should not be on the hot metal. Debris from the road damages eyes. “Every year the Humane Society of Central Oregon warns people to keep their pets safe from the dangers of warm temperatures,” says Lynne Ouchida, community outreach manager. “Unfortunately, every year we hear of animals needlessly suffering from heat stroke. When summer heat hits, the City of Bend animal control receive four to eight calls per day regarding dogs left in hot cars.” The Humane Society of Central Oregon is located one mile south of Reed Market Road on 27th Street in Bend. Klamath & Lake Community Action Services (KLCAS) Is Seeking Donations During the summer, we hold our annual Project Family Connect event where we bring community partners together to provide services and support in one location. The event educates and connects individuals and families with services and resources that promote economic stability. This year’s event is July 21, 2017, at the Klamath County Fairgrounds Event Center, 3531 S 6th Street, Klamath Falls, from 9am-2pm. Project Family Connect is a day when transformations occur. Participants receive immediate services like medical, dental and vision care, haircuts, and children’s books. They have access to necessary supplies like school supplies, hygiene items, cleaning products, food, and clothing. At the same time, they can connect with community service providers for long-term services to help them get back on their feet. We are seeking support through event sponsorship/donations or seeking new or gently used donations of the following items for the event: Sleeping bags & blankets, children’s school clothing, backpack and new school supplies, baby wipes & diapers (all sizes), job interview attire (nice adult clothing), non-perishable food, dog food, monetary donations are appreciated as well. The Shine on La Pine crew got busy back in May to start the work of summer clean-up in our town, but now, a month out and with lots of tourists flooding through the town, there are Let our visitors still things to do to make our businesses look better and our streets look clean and well kept. Does it matter if you are a renter? No, either the occupant homeowner, or the occupant home renter is responsible for taking care of weeds on the property they inhabit. Once again, the occupant is responsible for removing the noxious weeds. What else can make a difference in how our community looks to both city and area residents and the many tourists that come to La Pine? When it comes to businesses: clean windows and entry door glass, trash receptacles that are not overflowing, groomed parking lots, any landscaping that looks maintained and manicured, signage that gives information that people need. Customer service comes into play, too. Your frontline people need to be able to help visitors and locals with questions about La Pine and the surrounding region. Using polite and efficient phone language is a big plus. It makes us look good when we pull together to provide good service at our stores and shops!
