In Oregon, there haven’t been any confirmed cases of hep a related to these berries. Oregon State Health officials advise: Do not eat “Townsend Farms Organic Anti-Oxidant Blend” Berries; If you have any of these berries in your freezer, throw them out... now, even if someone in your house has eaten them without becoming sick. (You can also return them to Costco for a refund). Symptoms to watch for: Contact your family doctor/health provider if you’ve eaten these berries and become ill with mild fever, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue, pain in the upper right side of the abdomen, dark urine and jaundice (yellow eyes or skin). It’s very important that if you have these symptoms, that you DO NOT go to work, especially if you work in food service, health care or child care. Vaccination: If you’ve eaten these berries within the last two weeks, you may prevent infection with either a Hepatitis A vaccine or immune globulin. If you’ve already received a Hepatitis A vaccination in the past, you do not need to be re-immunized. Most children in Oregon have been vaccinated. La Pine Rural Fire Protection District Board Meeting

County Road Project - Day Road Area, La Pine On Monday, June 10th, construction crews began work on the grind and inlay of Day Road from Burgess Road to Dawn Road. The project will consist of grinding out existing asphalt in the travel lanes to a depth of two inches and then repaving back to the original depth. The contract completion date is June 14. Traffic will be limited to one lane and drivers can expect delays of up to 20 minutes during construction. Hours of operation will be from 7:00am to 7:00pm. Residential Debris Burning Closed For The Remainder Of The 2013 Wildfire Season As of June 3, 2013, residential debris burning is now closed for the remainder of the 2013 wildfire season. Expect a re-opening in late September/early October. The La Pine Fire District strongly encourages citizens to continue to FireWise properties to protect from wildfire. Options for pine needle and ladder fuel debris disposal at this time are to chip on site, or haul to the county transfer site, and/or pile and cover the materials in a safe location and burn later in the fall after the first snow. Note that campfires and barbecues are still permissible unless fire conditions go to the extreme level and a total burn ban is enacted. Campfires are allowed only in established and approved campfire rings no larger than 3’ diameter and must use cut fire wood and/or charcoal briquettes. 3rd Annual Butte Burner Charity Run/Walk At Pilot Butte State Park Local nonprofits Not Alone and Pilot Butte Partners are hosting the 3rd annual Butte Burner charity race for Central Oregon athletic enthusiasts of all ages and levels at Pilot Butte State Park on June 15th, 2013. What is the Butte Burner Charity Run/Walk? On Saturday June 15th, 2013, the Butte Burner (www.butteburner.com) will be held at Pilot Butte State Park in Bend, OR. This one-of-a-kind event has a 5k, 10k, kids k, and 3:33 Challenge on Pilot Butte’s trail and road system in the heart of Bend. JEANNETTE SMYTH

February 3, 1937 - May 31, 2013 Jeannette Smyth of La Pine, died May 31, 2013 at her home after a fall. She was 76. A memorial service was held at Cascade Bible Church in La Pine. Jeannette was born February 3, 1937, in Chicago, Illinois, to George and Helen (Kowalski) Sutko. She graduated from high school and took some college courses, and on November 22, 1967, she married Donald Earl Smyth in Sunland, California. They had one son, Adam. Jeannette and Donald were the first married couple to successfully complete the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Academy together. Jeannette was a Reserve Deputy working mainly at the Sybil Brand Women’s Jail, where she taught repeat offenders the occupational skill of waitressing, and also shared lessons from the Bible; most of those women did not repeat offend again. She also worked as a dispatcher at Crescenta Valley Station and sent Don on calls. She enjoyed home cooking, watching and feeding the deer, hiking, scrapbooking, and creating Origami crafts. Jeannette is survived by her husband, Don; her son Adam (and wife Karen) of Riverside, California; a brother, George Sutko, of Springfield, Alabama, and two grandchildren; Andrew and Kallie Smyth. Delma E. “Jean” Lloyd passed away on May 31, 2013, at her residence in La Pine, Oregon. She was 92. Jean was born on September 25, 1920, to John D. and Effie J. (Thomas) Pierce in Kosse, Texas. Jean married Herbert Lloyd on July 5, 1967, in Reno, Nevada. She worked as a waitress for many years in California and was a member of the Moose Lodge and American Legion Auxiliary in La Pine. She loved fishing and card games. Delma is survived by a daughter, Joann Mason of Scappoose, Oregon; 11 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; and one step great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her Special Companion, Wayne Ellis; her husband, Herbert, who died in 1993 after 25 years of marriage; two children, Murrey Hartwick and Bobby Bennett; and one grandson, Michael Bennett. THE TACKLE BOX

Crescent Lake is a wonderful lake to explore if you have not been there much, they have a newly refurbished boat launch, and with the resort handy, you have fuel, food and tackle supplies available as well. This is a 6 square mile lake located within the Deschutes National Forest about 75 miles south of Eugene, Oregon. Open year-around, this large, deep lake produces lake trout ranging from 5 to 20 pounds. Be sure to keep updated on the ever changing fishing regulations so you are not caught unaware of some of the seasonal changes that take place. Crescent Lake also has a good Kokanee fishery, producing fish in the 12-13” range. The lake is regularly stocked with brown and rainbow trout. Camping is available at Crescent Lake, Spring and Contorta Point campgrounds. Picnic facilities are available at Simax Beach, Tandy Bay and Tranquil Cove. Cabins are available for rent at Crescent Lake Resort and if you are just wanting a day trip, you can rent boats there as well. Crescent Lake is close enough to be easy to access, yet in the beautiful Cascade Mountain Range for that deep woods feel to fishing the high lakes of Central Oregon. Bio: After retiring from a career in education, my husband & I moved to the “Outback of Oregon.” As a native Oregonian, I have lived several places throughout the state & have always been in awe of the beauty that surrounds us. Through the years I have taken several art classes in various mediums. I have always been drawn to watercolor painting but knew I would need time to learn & develop the complex skills required to paint. I set this as a goal for myself when I retired. I checked out many books from the library, purchased & researched many books , met with other local watercolorists, & took classes. Each day I learn something new & continue to be surprised & delighted as a painting develops through different stages. I enjoy the use of rich colors & the fluidity of the paint as I try to capture the beauty around me. I use photographs as inspiration. When I paint my goal is to invite the viewer to step inside the painting with me. Someone told me that they could smell the sagebrush when they looked at the “Fort Rock” picture. That was the feeling I hoped to capture. My husband, Dave, mats and frames my work and supports me in countless ways. Molly, our yellow lab, is a constant companion overseeing the framing aspect and near me when I am painting. Molly has even been known to lick one of the paintings after it was finished. Much to my horror and later surprise, she gave it a more faded technique. We have another artist in the family! CHEAT GRASS Some plants we know can be toxic to your dogs, such as poinsettias and rhododendrons, but an invasive weed we have in Oregon, called cheat grass, can cause just as much discomfort to your pet as other toxic plants. Cheat grass is an annual weed that sprouts its spindle-like seeds in spring and fall; it is very hardy, and flammable. The seeds of cheat grass can be the culprits of sores in your dogs ears, paws, nose, mouth, skin, and if ingested, internally. The structure of the seed gives it the ability to burrow into your dog’s skin or the pad of their paw and between the toes, causing infection and discomfort. Most cheat grass seeds have to be removed by a veterinarian because of their barbed qualities. Attempting to pull them out without sedation equates pulling a fish hook out backwards. Prevent your dog from getting some of these nasty seeds by mowing the grass or using weed killer that is safe for pets, keeping your dog away from fields of the grass is also a good strategy. Check your dog for the seeds daily and remove them from the coat right away, before they have a chance to become a problem!

Pharmacy & Your Health Heat Rash Treatments Heat rash, also sometimes called miliaria, is a minor condition of the skin that typically occurs in warm climates. Although heat rash occurs most commonly in newborns, older persons may also be affected. The rash develops in response to blockage of the pores of sweat glands. It can happen during hot or humid weather. A recent move from a cooler climate to a hot and humid climate can place susceptible persons at risk for developing the rash. The rash can also occur if a child is wearing too much clothing during the winter. Signs and symptoms of heat rash include small red bumps, small blisters, and itchiness. When the rash consists of small red bumps, it may also be referred to as prickly heat.

For itching, calamine lotion or topical corticosteroids may be used. An antihistamine, such as hydroxyzine (Atarax) may also be taken for alleviation of signs and symptoms. If a bacterial infection known as impetigo develops (which occurs rarely), an antibiotic may be prescribed. Mupirocin (Bactroban) is available as a cream and an ointment. Cephalexin (Keflex) is a cephalosporin antibiotic that is taken by mouth.

Healthy Water/Swim Tips For Summer As you head to the pool this year spread fun, not germs. Remember, you share the water—and the germs in it—with every person in the pool. Recreational Water Illnesses (RWIs) are caused by germs spread by swallowing, breathing in mists or having contact with contaminated water. Recreational water includes water in swimming pools as well as hot tubs, interactive fountains, lakes & rivers. The most commonly reported RWI is diarrhea. Diarrheal illnesses can be caused by germs such as Crypto (short for Cryptosporidium), Giardia, Shigella, norovirus, and E. coli O157:H7. They can be spread by swallowing water that has been contaminated with fecal matter containing these germs. Swallowing even a small amount of pool water that has been contaminated with the germs that cause diarrhea can make you sick. Chlorine in pool water does not kill germs instantly. Even in properly chlorinated (1 ppm chlorine) pools germs like; Hepatitis can live for up to 15 minutes, Giardia up to 45 minutes and up to 10 days for Crypto. Take action to reduce the spread of RWIs! Follow the steps below to help ensure that your swimming experience is healthy and RWI-free. Don’t swim when you have diarrhea. You can spread germs in the water and make other people sick; Don’t swallow pool water, and avoid getting water in your mouth; Practice good hygiene. Shower with soap before swimming and wash your hands after using the toilet or changing diapers. Germs on your body end up in the water; Take your kids on bathroom breaks or check diapers often. Waiting to hear “I have to go” may mean that it’s too late; Change diapers in a bathroom or a diaper-changing area and not at poolside. Germs can spread in and around the pool; Wash your child thoroughly (especially the rear-end) with soap and water before swimming. Invisible amounts of fecal matter can end up in the pool. Without your help, even the best-maintained pools can be an environment to spread germs. Watercolor Exhibition Graces The Sunriver Area Public Library The Friends of the Sunriver Area Library are pleased to announce that the Sunriver Area Library will host the Watercolor Society of Oregon’s (WSO) Traveling Show from June 29 to August 24. The Library is located at 56855 Venture Lane, Sunriver, and the exhibition is open to the public Tuesday through Friday, 10am to 6pm, Saturday, noon to 5 pm. This collection of 20 award-winning works was selected from the 80 works juried into WSO’s 48th Annual Spring Exhibition, featuring many of the finest watercolor artists in Oregon. Several artists from Central Oregon are represented: Bend artist, Judy Hoiness won the second place award for her vibrant painting ‘Save Oregon Wildlife 5,’ an energetic contemporary abstract work that reveals subtle imagery upon study. Linda Shelton, Redmond, won an Achievement award for portraying her proud noble lion in ‘His Majesty.’ Su Skjersaa Lukinbeal, Bend, also won an Achievement award in a work that captures a playful feline moment in soft warm colors in ‘Lynx Spins Yarns.’ Nationally acclaimed Juror, Mary Ann Beckwith, from Michigan, originally chose 80 paintings from the many submitted to comprise the Spring Show, then selected these 20 works for particular merit. Following the opening at Albany, the Traveling Show tours Oregon for five months at four locations. According to Helen Brown, a watercolor artist who, as a member of the Sunriver Friends’ Art Committee, helped bring this special exhibition to Sunriver, “the Library is a great venue to present this diverse selection of outstanding original water media works, and to share them with art lovers and visitors to our region.” She noted that the WSO has a long tradition of featuring a wide array of works, from traditional themes to semi-abstract visions, from portraits to celebrations of nature. “Each artist demonstrates an advanced facility to interpret his or her subject in a dynamic designs, and with a highly personalized color palette.” For questions about the Sunriver Area Public Library, contact 541-312-1080. COCC Faculty Honors Davies With Achievement Award The faculty of Central Oregon Community College voted to honor Deborah Davies, professor of dental assisting, with this year’s Faculty Achievement Award. Presented annually since 1986, the award recognizes excellence in teaching. A member of the COCC faculty since 2005, Davies created the curriculum for the college’s dental assisting program, which has become one of COCC’s most successful and popular programs. Students’ remarks on course evaluations underscore Davies’s willingness and capacity to assist her students in achieving excellence, according to Shirley Metcalf, COCC’s interim vice president for instruction. Comments include “I feel like I really understand because she teaches well” and “She answers all questions in a positive manner and is also very helpful and attentive—even outside of class.” Superlatives include “my favorite instructor,” “the best college instructor I have had” and “the goddess of teaching.” “My goal is to be a mentor to my students, teaching them to teach themselves,” said Davies. “It is very rewarding to help someone learn new skills, and I learn so much in the process!” Working with Volunteers in Medicine, Davies helped to establish a low-cost dental clinic on the COCC campus in 2005. This program gives dental assisting students practical experience while providing basic dental care to Deschutes County’s lowincome and uninsured employed adults. “It has been a wonderful success and a win-win-win for students, patients and the volunteer dentists,” she said. “It is exciting to realize that with this knowledge and experience, students can pursue worthwhile and productive careers in the dental health field,” said Davies. “Watching them transform from student to dental professional is the best aspect of teaching for me.” Davies earned an associate’s degree in dental hygiene from Pueblo Community College, a bachelor’s degree in biology and a secondary education certificate from the University of Southern Colorado, an Oregon Dental Hygiene License and certification by the National Dental Hygiene Board.

Diamonds in the Desert: Baseball and Bend, 1900 To Present The Des Chutes Historical Museum explores the history and love of baseball in Bend in a new exhibit that opened on June 8. From sandlots to Genna stadium, a love of baseball is a recurring theme throughout Bend’s history. The display highlights new gifts to the museum’s collection as well as special items on loan from the Bend Elks and members of the Deschutes County Historical Society. Ambulance Service Application Process Open The Deschutes County Ambulance Service Area (ASA) Committee has announced that the application process to provide ambulance service within Deschutes County began on Monday, May 20, and will last for 30 days.
