La Pine Fire District Board Meeting April 14 Upcoming FireFree Yard Debris Disposal The Board of Directors of the La Pine Rural Fire Protection District will hold a regular board meeting Thurs., April 14, 9:00 a.m. at the fire station located at 51550 Huntington Road, La Pine. Requests for public comment must be made in writing

by U.S. Mail or by emailing admin@lapinefire.com and must be received by 3 p.m. the day prior to the meeting.

The meeting location is accessible to persons with disabilities. Complete agendas or request for interpreter for the hearing impaired or for the accommodations for persons with disabilities should be made at least 48 hours before the meeting through the district administrative office at 51590 Huntington Road, La Pine.

St. Charles’ Hospital Visitor Policy Changes St. Charles’ hospitals no longer require visitors to show proof of vaccination, though wearing a mask will still be mandatory.

Signage posted at hospital entrances will encourage some visitors to leave, including those who have respiratory symptoms, have a pending Covid-19 test, or have been in contact with a known or suspected Covid case in the last 14 days. Visitor screening does not apply to those seeking medical treatment or Covid-19 testing.

Additionally, all patients — including those who are positive for COVID-19 — will be allowed two visitors at a time, who may come and go from the hospital as needed. The exception is the Emergency Department, where only one visitor will be allowed.

In some cases, visitors may be required to wear additional personal protective equipment for their safety.

Mini-Earthquakes at Newberry Volcano Seismologists discovered a handful of miniscule earthquakes occurring in Newberry’s caldera from March 24 – April 3.

“Newberry typically has earthquakes as a part of as what we call ‘regular background activity,’” said Seth Moran, a Research Seismologist at the United States Geologic Survey Cascades Volcano Observatory. But these quakes in late March are something out of the ordinary due to their frequency.

Besides the 29 located earthquakes on the Eastern side of Paulina Lake, hundreds of other tiny tremors occurred in unknown areas of the Newberry site, which spans almost 1200 square miles.

Though this series of earthquakes is the most in a while for the volcano, Newberry is known for being the most active in the Cascade Mountain Range.

Crook Co. Sheriff’s Office Warns About Recent Phone Scam Crook County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a recent phone scam involving a person identifying as a sheriff’s office employee.

Lt. Bill Elliott said the person has been placing calls around Crook County, attempting to gain money by making people believe a judge is signing a warrant for their arrest.

“This is a scam call and please do not give them any information that you cannot confirm,” Elliot said. The Sheriff’s Office never requests money or credit card information in exchange for not issuing a warrant.

The undersigned hereby certifies that no assignments of the Trust Deed by the Trustee or by the Beneficiary and no appointments of a successor trustee have been made, except as are or will be recorded in the Records of the county or counties in which the Property is situated. Unpaid Principal: $85,000.00; 2. Accrued and Unpaid Interest (through and including January 5, 2022) (interest continues to accrue until paid at the rate provided in the Secured Promissory Note): $6,800.00; 3. Late charge (5% of $91,800.00): $4,590.00; 4. Trustee’s Sale Guarantee Report: $405.00; 5. Legal Fees and Costs (as of December 31, 2021) (estimated): $2,626.72; 6. Subtotal: $99,421.72; 7. Plus title expenses, trustee’s fees, recording fees, and attorneys’ fees incurred herein by reason of said default and any further sums advanced by the Beneficiary for the protection of the Property and its interest therein: Unknown.

Notice hereby is given that the Beneficiary and Trustee, by reason of the default, have elected and do hereby elect to foreclose the Trust Deed and the Security Instruments by advertisement and sale pursuant to ORS 86.705 to 86.795, and to cause to be sold at public auction to the highest bidder for cash the interest in the Property and Personal Property which Grantor had, or had the power to convey, at the time of the execution by Grantor of the Trust Deed and the Security Instruments, together with any interest Grantor or Grantor’s successor in interest acquired after the execution of the Trust Deed and the Security Instruments, to satisfy the obligations secured by the Trust Deed and the Security Instruments, and the expenses of the sale, including the compensation of the Trustee as provided by law, and the reasonable fees of Trustee’s attorneys. The sale will be held at the hour of 11:00 o’clock A.M., in accord with the standard of time established by ORS 187.110, on Friday, May 27, 2022, at the following place: the front outside entrance to the Deschutes County Courthouse, located at 1100 NW Bond St., Bend, Oregon 97703. La Pine Firefighters Respond to Third La Pine Fire in Six Days La Pine Rural Fire Protection District firefighters responded on April 7 to a large shop complex fire on Lazy River Drive that was within five feet of an occupied residence with a family of two adults and 3 children who were able to escape safely.

Eighteen firefighters with two engines and three tenders responded as well as four support team members. Sunriver Fire provided one engine and assistance. Deschutes County Sheriff deputies also responded and Lazy River Drive was closed due the size of fire, exploding items, and heavy fire vehicle traffic.

The fire is under investigation and not considered suspicious at this time.

This is the third major structure fire in the La Pine/Sunriver area within a six-day period.

New Female Optometrist at La Pine Eyecare Is ‘Doing What I Love’

“People have been so warm and welcoming. The fact that they entrust me with their eyecare is pretty wonderful,” said Dr. Etosha Fegan, who recently joined La Pine Eyecare as an optometrist.

“This job is everything I hoped it would be.”

“I’m really impressed by the care and compassionate demeanor Dr. Fegan shows toward her patients,” reciprocated Dr. Graham Balcer, who has been described as “brilliant,” and “the best eye doctor I’ve ever seen” since setting up his practice in La Pine 16 years ago.

“I’m doing what I love,” emphasized Dr. Fegan, who had “always been interested in the medical field, but decided that choosing a life-and-death career would take too much of a toll, and entail too much time away from my family.”

So after obtaining a degree in Biology from the University of Montana, Fegan was accepted for Pacific University’s four-year optometry program that combined academics and clinical experience – “much like dental school,” she described.

And did we mention that during this intensive period, Fegan also gave birth to two children?

“I attended graduation when my youngest was a week old,” she recalled, “and admit suffering from major sleep deprivation during this entire time.”

Now a resident of Central Oregon, where her twin sister also lives, Dr. Fegan much prefers working in a private practice -- as opposed to a commercial enterprise such as Walmart or Costco that also offer eyecare services. “This environment is a lot more personal, and allows you to spend all the time you need with each patient,” she noted.

Drs. Balcer and Fegan strongly endorse periodic eye and vision exams as part of preventive health care, “as many eye problems have no obvious symptoms so individuals may not be aware they exist.” In the same vein, added Dr. Fegan, “we also diagnose conditions such as cataracts, high blood pressure, and bleeding in the back of the eyes that can indicate medical conditions such as diabetes – and send patients back to their primary care physician for treatment.”

Fegan vividly remembers diagnosing a patient’s pituitary tumor in time to stop its progression, “which was really rewarding,” and underscores that the optometry field “is becoming more and more medical.”

There are two primary reasons for this, she explained. “First is the significant impact of online eyeglass sales, primarily for economic reasons. Second is the lack of providers in ophthalmology (a very long career path entailing four years of medical school, and four of residency) – which has resulted in optometrists taking on part of their role out of necessity. I see a strong need for medical optometry, as the two fields overlap more and more.”

Dr. Fegan (whose unusual first name – Etosha -- comes from a national park and game reserve in Namibia, Africa) believes that in addition to expertise, professionalism includes demeanor.

“It makes such a difference when you open the door to the exam room with confidence and a smile,” she endorsed.

In return, Dr. Fegan’s patients have obviously been singing her praises, judging by comments such as “Oh my goodness, I’ve heard such good things about you!” Dr. Fegan is also gratified, “as optometry is still an emerging field for females,” when they say, “I’m so glad that Dr. Balcer hired a woman!”

Although Kyle Kopachick is a third-generation motorsports enthusiast who claims to have “motor oil running through my veins,” his first experience at age four did not seem auspicious. His dad took him for a ride on a ’72 Bultaco dirt bike, the throttle stuck, and the two actually climbed a tree. “I thought it was a thrill, and was hooked on motocross from that moment,” claimed the owner of Moto Aspirations in La Pine.

Kopachick’s father surprised him again on his ninth birthday, gifting his son with a 1985 Honda ATC 110S three-wheeler named “Miss America” – although Kopachick knew nothing about operating bikes – or even that the tires were made of rubber (so he claims).

“My dad’s instructions consisted simply of the words ‘here’s the start button – just jump on and go.’ I still have the original manual that gradually taught me what I needed to know – as shown by all the red-pen markings on its pages.”

On weekends, father and son frequented the local moto track in Dade City, Florida, where Kopachick was inspired to one day become a professional motocross driver by watching such luminaries as Ricky Carmichael (whose unrivaled successes earned him the nickname “The Goat,” standing for Greatest of All Time) and James Stewart (nicknamed “The Fastest Man on the Planet”).

By the age of 12, Kopachick was helping other racers repair flat tires and tune their bikes to better perform at races – and from there, his career as a 5-star-rated mechanic started to grow – as did his own prowess. For years, he was ranked fourth in the state in the Gold Cup and RM Cup. Eventually ending up in Central Oregon, and working for others as a mechanic/ technician, Kopachick made the leap into owning his own business – “which had always lingered in my mind.” The current 3,000-square-foot space in La Pine’s Industrial Park that houses Moto Aspirations attracts customers from as far away as Sisters, Christmas Valley, Silver Lake, and even Canada.

Specializing in diagnostic maintenance services and repairs for motordriven vehicles ranging from ATVs to side-by-sides, snowmobiles, snow bikes, personal watercraft, dirt bikes, and cruisers, Kopachick believes that “the most important things I can do are provide great service, and create a welcoming atmosphere for customers.”

Then there’s the undeniable factor that attracts customers, and keeps them coming back. “With a service business such as Moto Aspirations, what we’re selling is me,” Kopachick asserted. “Even with my decades of industry experience, I have to prove to every customer that I’m going to fix their vehicle as if it were my own.”

COCC to Celebrate 10 Years in Madras & Prineville Free events are planned at Central Oregon Community College campuses in Prineville and Madras this spring to celebrate the college’s 10-year anniversary at those locations.

The Prineville event will occur at the college campus at 510 SE Lynn Blvd., 5:30 - 7:30 p.m., April 14, in conjunction with the Crook County Chamber of Commerce’s ‘after-hours’ event.’

The Madras event will take place from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. at the campus at 1170 E. Ashwood Road on May 14, alongside the college’s annual salmon bake feast, a traditionally prepared lunch that’s co-presented by the First Nations Student Union.

The event will also include a silent auction for a scholarship fund for Indigenous students, as well as dancing, drumming and vendors.

Crook County High School Offers Kendall Ford Internships Crook High School now offers a new internship at Kendall Ford of Prineville, in which seven students are learning about the various jobs at a dealership, including maintenance, basic mechanics, changing oil, detailing and selling cars.

The internship is meant to support a growing number of students seeking trade jobs post-high school instead of a four-year college education, and helps address an ongoing labor shortage in the auto industry.

To help propel the program at Crook County High School, Kendall is covering costs of equipment, which typically soars into thousands of dollars. It is also providing space for the course, employees to mentor students and an old Ford truck the students will fix up and sell. Program graduates also have potential to get hired at the dealership.

In Jefferson County, the school district obtained $125,000 in state grant funding in February for a similar automotive class, which will go toward a new course that the district’s two high schools hope to start next fall.

COCC Info Sessions Scheduled for Nursing & Health Programs Central Oregon Community College (COCC) is hosting virtual information sessions this month for its nursing and health programs.

The sessions include program overviews, structure, length and cost.

County Seeks Sisters-Area Resident to Fill Planning Commission Vacancy Deschutes County is seeking volunteers from the Sisters area who are interested in filling a vacancy on the County’s Planning Commission for a four-year term from July 1, 2022 – June 30, 2026. 2023 Annular Solar Eclipse Will Be Visible in La Pine Area An annular solar eclipse is set to be visible in the La Pine area and points south on Oct. 14, 2023, with its path crossing the state just south of Bend. (By the way, a total solar eclipse, as Central Oregonians experienced in 2017, will occur on April 8, 2024, and that path moves from Texas through the Midwest and Northeast.)

Annualar solar eclipses, when the moon is centered over the sun but doesn’t completely block it, are different than partial solar eclipses, when the moon crosses but doesn’t completely cover the sun -- it just takes a “bite” out of it, so to speak.

But events like the annular solar eclipse, where the moon covers the sun’s center, still attract thousands of people from all over the world.

No Spring Chinook Season on Deschutes River The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife has decided there will be no spring Chinook season on the Deschutes River for 2022 due to expected poor returns of both hatchery and wild fish.

Redmond Joins National Water Conservation Challenge To help combat serious drought, the City of Redmond is once again taking part in the Wyland Foundation’s National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation.

Last year, residents of 2,000 cities, including Redmond, pledged to reduce water consumption by more than 3 billion gallons a year through the challenge.

Redmond Water Utilities Manager Josh Wedding said the biggest use of water is on open green spaces. He’d love to see average summertime use, currently about 14 million gallons a day, go down to about 8 million, and yard maintenance can go a long way toward it.

“Reducing your watering times, or eliminating some of your green space and looking to go with xeriscaping (replacing turf with rocks),” Wedding said.

To participate, residents can go to mywaterpledge.com from April 1–30 to make a pledge to conserve water on behalf of the City of Redmond.

Families Invited to Apply for Free Workshop Series at High Desert Museum The High Desert Museum is now accepting applications for a free, family-centered outdoor learning workshop series – for children ages 8 through 11 – titled “Burrowing into Wildlife Science: A Family Adventure Workshop Series.”

The multiweek series offers hands-on opportunities to uncover the mysteries of the predators and prey across our local desert and forests – both at the Museum and in the field. Families accepted into the program will attend six daylong workshops – May 7, May 14, May 21, May 28, June 4 and June 11. The program is free, and families will receive $150 for participating in the workshop series, gas cards to help with transportation costs and lunch at each workshop.

Prineville Middle Schooler’s Sign Spreads Smiles Every day for the past few weeks, Ben Seely has been riding his bike to Crook County Middle School while holding aloft a homemade sign, with a simple message for all who see it: “Have a Nice Day.” Apparently, the young man became bored while waiting for his sister to finish school at Crook County High for the day, and wanted to do something productive.

Seely has only lived in Central Oregon for a few months, but said he enjoys spreading a little cheer and brightening people’s day.

“It only takes one person to change the world,” he said.

Utilize your customer service skills at one of the most beautiful locations in Oregon at Crescent Lake Resort. Our resort consists of 21 cabins and a fleet of rental equipment including motor boats, canoes, kayaks, and paddle boards. We also have a lodge with a bar and restaurant. We also have RV parking for employees at 50% of the regular fee.

We are looking for employees that can provide a great experience for our guests. Candidates must be team players with great customer service skills.

We are looking to hire maintenance, customer service, retail store attendants, and prep and line cooks. Prep and line cooks must maintain food safety standards in a full kitchen for breakfast, lunch, and dinner menus. We are also looking to fill bartender/server positions.

Must have an OLCC license.

Job Requirements: • Well motivated, quick to learn, friendly, and have an adventurist personality.

• Must be able to communicate with co-workers and guests, helping to provide a top-notch experience for our guests and workers.

• Be able to deal with a high volume of customer interaction We have full time and part time positions available that start from $14-$16 an hour plus tips. Applicants must be able to commute or relocate to the Crescent Lake area.
