MY FAIR LADY AND TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD BROADWAY SHOWS
To Kill a Mockingbird is Academy Award winner Aaron Sorkin’s new play, directed by Tony Award winner Bartlett Sher and based on Harper Lee’s classic novel. To Kill a Mockingbird is the highest-grossing American play in Broadway history, and Emmy Award-winning actor Richard Thomas will play the role of Atticus Finch. Thomas has been performing on both the stage and screen for 60 years.
Right now, we are privileged to have the opportunity to enjoy two Broadway shows in South Florida. My Fair Lady will be at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts March 28 to April 2, and To Kill a Mockingbird will be at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts March 28 to April 9. If you love Broadway, I recommend going to see both.
With book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner, music by Frederick Loewe, and directed by Bartlett Sher, the Lincoln Center Theater’s production of My Fair Lady tells the story of Eliza Doolittle, a young Cockney flower seller, and Henry Higgins, a linguistics professor determined to transform Eliza into what he believes a ‘proper lady’ should be like. The real question is who is being transformed? The score of My Fair Lady includes many classic songs, such as “I Could Have Danced All Night,” “Wouldn’t It Be Loverly,” and “I’ve Grown Accustomed to Her Face.” This production is the winner of five Outer Critics Circle Awards including Best Revival of a Musical and was nominated for 10 Tony Awards including Best Musical Revival. My Fair Lady premiered on Broadway March 15, 1956, won six Tony Awards including Best Musical, and became the longest-running musical in Broadway history at the time.
To Kill a Mockingbird , set in 1934 Alabama, is Harper Lee’s lasting story of racial injustice and childhood innocence that focuses on small-town lawyer Atticus Finch – considered one of the most revered characters in American literature. The play started performances on November 1, 2018 at the famous Shubert Theatre and played to sold-out audiences until Broadway closed down in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

It is very important that we come together as a community to celebrate Pride, and to remind anyone who wants to discriminate against us, including Ronald Dion DeSantis, that we will never tolerate discrimination against our LGBTQ brothers and sisters. Gaining our rights has not been easy. Many gay people and allies have fought hard so we could get those rights. We must continue to FIGHT and NEVER, EVER GIVE UP!
This week’s Wire Magazine Special Issue celebrates the 15th Anniversary of Miami Beach Pride. We interview Miami Beach Pride Chairman of the Board Bruce Horwich, DJ Deanne (who is DJing at the Fun Dip Pool Party), and DJ Tony Moran (who is DJing at the TD Bank Stage) for all the details about this year’s Miami Beach Pride, and why it is so important for us to come together, celebrate and show our strength as a community. PUBLISHER’S CORNER MORE THAN EVER, WE NEED TO CELEBRATE PRIDE TOGETHER!
LET’S CELEBRATE THE 15TH MIAMI BEACH PRIDE GROWING STRONGER TOGETHER
By
The 15th Anniversary Miami Beach Pride is going to be a fabulous celebration of our LGBTQ community which will include several new events and parties. This year’s festivities will start on April 1st with two full weeks of LGBTQ-centered events and activities that will culminate in the Festival and Parade Weekend on April 15-16, 2023. Visit miamibeachpride.com to get all the details and plan ahead, so you can attend as many events and parties as possible. Several LGBTQ community celebrities will also be hosting and performing at this year’s Miami Beach Pride, including actress, singer, comedian, author and LGBTQ+ icon Sandra Bernhard, who will host the VIP Beach Affair; 2023 Grand Marshals actor, TV host, producer, and author Jonathan Bennett, TV host Jaymes Vaughan, and actress and artist Jazzmun; singer, choreographer, and YouTuber Todrick Hall; drag queen, reality television personality, and actor Shangela; two-time Grammy winner and Emmy-recipient Albita; and singer Inaya Day.
We sat down with Miami Beach Pride Chairman of the Board Bruce Horwich, DJ Deanne (who is DJing at the Fun Dip Pool Party), and DJ Tony Moran (who is DJing at the Festival TD Bank Stage) to get the scoop on this year’s Miami Beach Pride and why it is so important for us to come together and celebrate as a community.
Rafa Carvajal: What is new and different about this year’s Miami Beach Pride?
Bruce Horwich: In our 15th year, we've brought back the Miss Miami Beach Pageant to crown a new winner! At a time when drag is under a microscope, we wanted to give the art form an even bigger stage than in years past. Drag as an art form takes a tremendous amount of skill and courage, and it's inextricably linked to Miami Beach Pride and something we're proud to showcase as part of our programming. We've also added an Easter Family Picnic this year, which is designed for ALL families, whether they be LGBTQ or not, to have a safe, fun and free space that's welcoming for children. We'll have an Easter Bunny for photos, an Easter Egg Hunt and a host of other activities and food to make for a fun Saturday afternoon. All of the details can be found at miamibeachpride.com
RC: Why do you think it is important to celebrate Pride together as a community?
BH: It's more important than ever to come together as a community. While society has come a long way in general acceptance, fresh attacks from certain groups threaten to

undo so much of the work that so many have committed to over the years. We have to not only continue to grow and evolve as a community, but stand together in the face of adversity. At the same time, we want to remain visible and open to all who want to take part in our programming to counter a lot of the false narratives that circulate on social media. We all want the same things in feeling safe in our communities, not being discriminated against, and having rights that many other groups take for granted. We want to welcome those that may oppose us in thoughtful conversation and showing the joy that comes from being part of this community.
RC: What are you looking forward to the most about the 15th Miami Beach Pride celebrations?
BH: There are so many things! From our Queer Art Showcase to Social Justice Night, our Fun Dip Pool Party, In the Wyld Party for our ladies, there's truly something for everyone! Our T-Tent is even bigger this year for our trans brothers and sisters, and with two weeks of events it's going to be the biggest group of events we've ever programmed!
RC: Tell our readers why they should attend the 15th Miami Beach Pride events and parties.
BH: We take a tremendous amount of care and attention and time in putting these together so people can come and enjoy. The board is a group of dedicated people volunteering their time to make this all happen as seamlessly as it has for the last 15 years. We hope people come out and share and know that everyone is welcome, and we have spaces for all. Whether it's your first Pride or your 50th, we want people to know that we do this for them and for our community.
RC: Is there anything else you would like to share with Wire Magazine readers?
BH: Yes, our Sunday night is going to be bigger than ever before with our headlining talent, and a drone show the likes of which Miami Beach has never seen! It's really a first of its kind in how deeply tailored it will be to our community set to music. You're not going to want to miss this one night only special program!
#3 2023 WIREMAG.COM 11
Rafa Carvajal: What are you looking forward to the most about DJing at this year's Miami Beach Pride Fun Dip Pool Party?
DJ Deanne: Fun Dip is a collaboration with my brand, Sweet Spot, and Miami Beach Pride to create an allinclusive tea dance style of event. I love getting to showcase my music to the diverse audience that comprises our LGBTQ+ community. And getting to share that experience with DJ Abel is a dream. Abel is so singularly important to the history of the gay nightlife in Miami. This party will be really special.
RC: Why do you think it is important to celebrate Pride together as a community?
DJD: Now, more than ever, there are forces in government and society that are aggressively working to tear us apart, break us down, marginalize, and even erase LGBTQ+ folks. Pride is one time of the year where we come together, United, to celebrate that we are here, we’re queer, and we’re not going anywhere!
RC: What type of music should Fun Dip Pool Party attendees expect from your sets?
DJD: Fun Dip is a feel-good type of event. Fun vocals, daytime vibes, some classic house music anthems, and funky nu-disco bangers. And then, as a special treat, Abel will be serving a signature Fire Island set. If you’ve ever or never heard Abel in that element, you are in for a treat!
RC: Tell our readers why they should buy tickets to the Fun Dip Pool Party.
DJD: This year, Fun Dip is being held at the iconic Clevelander Hotel on Ocean Drive. They can get all the vibes of Ocean Drive, great sound, a dip in the pool, or dance under the sun while enjoying a day filled with feelgood energy. All proceeds benefit Miami Beach Pride and tickets are only $20 in advance.
RC: Is there anything else you would like to share with Wire Magazine readers?
DJD: It can be tough out there in this world. Don’t let what’s happening around you break you down. You matter. Lead with love. Be strong. Live your truth. Show

Rafa Carvajal: What do you expect will be the best part of DJing at the 15th Miami Beach Pride?
DJ Tony Moran: I expect to allow the warm breeze and the sun to guide people to a happy place celebrating UNITY and STRENGTH.
RC: Why do you think it is important to celebrate Pride together as a community?
DJTM: As a community, we have this great opportunity to remind each other that we are not alone. That we are many and that we responsibly support and protect our own. We celebrate together our accomplishments to be ourselves as equality has been fought for us bravely, and we are here to evolve with the topics of today that discriminate against those in our rainbow.
RC: Tell our readers what you have planned for your music sets during Miami Beach Pride?
DJTM: My music is gonna be about the celebration of life. Perhaps using upbeat grooves and integrating classics of the past and praising the anthems and positive rhythms of today. I’ll be using all the gifts of sound that I have accumulated from around the world, because our love is bigger than just one city. But Miami Beach is a PERFECT example of a place for our community that can thrive without compromising who we are as a human. And you can dance or clap a fan because there is good reason to dance your ass off for the blessings you have today, and for opening your arms to what lies ahead on the horizon. I’ll let the music provide you a path where you can think, relax, and breathe about all of it.
RC: What does Pride mean to you?
DJTM: Pride has continued to expand its meaning to me as I’ve become older and wiser. Having experienced all sorts of discrimination or violence because I was ethnic or because I was gay allowed me to use the power of patience. The strength that together we share because we can trust each other. By example, so many have led by their actions, a path to mature with your head up high and achieve your goals while in your own skin.
RC: Is there anything else you would like to share with Wire Magazine readers?
DJTM: Yes, a giant ‘Thank You’ for allowing me to write, produce or remix many creative works that are included in the soundtracks of your lives. It is through your support that I have been able to work on my dreams in the recording studio with amazing artists and then sharing it with you on your dance floor or music outlet. You have blessed me 100 times over and I am forever grateful.

Rafa Carvajal: What are your most important priorities as OUTshine celebrates a major milestone of 25 years?
Mark Gilbert: We are so thrilled to have shared thousands of films that tell OUR STORIES on the big screen with our community, as well as host so many incredible events that bring us together. For our 25th year, we want to celebrate that history and make sure we produce a festival that both reflects our past and shapes our future. With the move to make Silverspot our new home, this is a great start to a new beginning. We have some wonderful ways to share our past as well, and that will all be reflected at the Festival.
RC: What should attendees expect from the OUTshine Film Festival 25th Miami Edition?
MG: We are doing a throwback, made in Miami film at Rooftop Cinema Club, in Miami Beach, showing Birdcage as well as a lot of imaging that reflects our past. Our new home will also showcase some wonderful parties and a brand-new twist on Opening Night. We have great films for Opening and Closing nights and wonderful options throughout the Festival to reflect the diversity of the LGBTQ+ community. Our Cocktails and Cinema returns Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday to give us yet another way for us to forge new friendships.
RC: Tell our readers about the best events they should attend at the OUTshine Film Festival 25th Miami Edition?
MG: Of course, you should never miss Opening Night, and this year it will be different because you will have ‘Dinner at Your Seats’ during the movie with several options for you to choose from! After, we will have an amazing Opening Night desserts party and something we all love, an open bar by Bacardi. The weekend is packed with great films and something for the boys, I mean men, the Men’s Spotlight Film and After Party – always a great night. The following Thursday we have a terrific film and After Party for Centerpiece, Saturday night is for the girls, I mean women, and Sunday we wrap up with our Closing Night film and Awards After Party with food and open bar.
RC: Is there anything else you would like to share with Wire Magazine readers?
MG: We are so proud to have showcased thousands of films sharing our stories on the big screen. And our parties have always been the talk of the town. As we move into our next 25 years, we want to make sure that we create a great user experience, and that is exactly what our new home at Silverspot will deliver… great seats, amazing screens, incredible sound, and a cool atmosphere. Twenty-five will be an exciting way for all of us in our community to come together. OUTshine’s mission will continue. Through film we will continue to inspire, educate and ENTERTAIN our audience, ensuring our stories new and old are told on the big screen, for all of us to share together.

OUR COMMUNITY
BURNING DAYS (KURAK GUNLER)
Director: Emin Alper. Turkey, 2022
Emre, a young and dedicated prosecutor, is newly appointed to a small town hit by a water crisis and political scandals. After an initial welcome, he experiences an increasing number of tense interactions and is reluctantly dragged into local politics. When Emre forms a bond with the owner of the local newspaper, pressure escalates under heated rumors. At its core, the film confronts the intimate question involving Emre's own sexuality, and the extent of his willingness to acknowledge it, made even more difficult through a town where homophobia runs rampant. Handsomely photographed, Burning Days is a crackling, politically minded thriller ever so relevant for the world in which we live, today.
CLOCKED
Director: Noah Salzman. United States, 2023
Adolfo Rivera is an 18-year-old, undefeated boxer from a conservative catholic family in Miami. His love for his tight-knit family is apparent; not just in their time spent together, but in the bruises and broken bones he's willing to endure, time and time again, in order to help them pay the bills. Adolfo may be remarkably talented in the ring, but his family's dreams for his profession are far different from what Adolfo has in mind. Adolfo is secretly saving his winnings for the biggest fight of his life; selfacceptance in his desire to live his truth.
EISMAYER
Director: David Wagner. Austria, 2022
Sergeant Major Eismayer is known and feared as the toughest training officer in the Austrian Armed Forces – ruthless with recruits and unwavering in his discipline, order and macho toughness. But when he starts to fall in love with Falak, a new recruit who unashamedly embraces his homosexuality, Eismayer’s closeted existence is shaken to the core. To a man like Eismayer, loving another man cannot be reconciled with the understanding of what a model soldier should be. Will he choose to protect his badass, tough guy image over all else, or can he follow his heart and his true desire? Eismayer is inspired by true events, making this gripping love story even more beautiful.
IN BED (KEILU EIN MAHAR)
Director: Ntzan Giladi. Israel, 2022
Guy and his best friend, Joy, are enjoying the gay pride parade to the fullest, when their bliss is abruptly put to an end by a deadly shooting. Fleeing the scene into the safety of Guy’s home, they take in a fellow pride parader, Dan, who seems in shock. With the shooter still on the run, they enter a night full of sex, drugs and paranoia. Loosely based on a real hate crime, shocking for the whole community, Nitza Gilady makes a good use of this context to take us on a hallucinated journey, full of highs and lows, plenty of ecstasy (and a variety of substances) and colorful paranoia.
