Long has there been a connection between LGBT individuals and the arts world. Gay artists have been integral to arts since before the Renaissance and have played key roles in many of the movements of the past century. While some have achieved fame and recognition, others never found – or perhaps even sought – the limelight preferring to focus on the most common impetus for the artist – the need to express, create, interpret and communicate via countless mediums.
It’s been said that artists see the world in a greater range of color, texture and depth than other people and perhaps this is why gays and lesbians have long been drawn to the visual and performing arts. LGBT individuals themselves have also seen the world from a particular and uncommon perspective – that of the outsider, trying to make sense of a world that is often confusing, conflicted and unwelcoming.
