PUBLISHER'S CORNER CONFRONTING OUR PANDEMIC CRISIS Our nation has faced many crises in the past and we have been able to overcome them. Great leadership has helped in many cases, but this time the lack of leadership and incompetence in the White House has done quite the opposite. The pandemic is worsening, with no end in sight, and Donald Trump has decided to ignore it, lie about it, and actually oppose increased testing to hide the truth. Furthermore, Trump has irresponsibly held public rallies and proactively encouraged thousands of people to attend with no social distancing or mandatory face masks. With this, Trump has single handedly put thousands of people at risk of contracting COVID-19 and spreading it to others. Our country has now become the nation with the greatest number of cases and deaths from COVID-19. The United States added 1 million new coronavirus cases in just 28 days, has reached the 3 million confirmed cases mark, and achieved the awful and very sad milestone of 135,000 deaths from COVID-19 – as I write my Publisher's Corner. In addition, our state of Florida has become one of the worst hotspots in the nation, breaking daily records for confirmed cases in recent days, and the Florida Agency for Healthcare Administration is reporting that 50 Florida hospitals’ Intensive Care Units (ICUs) have reached capacity. I provide all this information not to alarm you, but to inform all our readers of the facts and what is really going on. Why? Because Donald Trump and Ron DeSantis have failed us miserably, and it is up to every one of us to do our best to protect ourselves, our family, our friends, our co-workers, our customers, and our fellow citizens from contracting this very contagious and potentially deadly virus. It is high time everyone stops pretending this will go away tomorrow and diligently practice social distancing and wearing masks. We can beat this virus, but certainly not by following the “advice” or “recommendations” of Trump and DeSantis. Take the current situation extremely seriously. The last place you want to be at right now is an overcrowded ICU where overtasked and overstressed valiant doctors, nurses and other healthcare workers are working diligently around the clock to save lives. Full ICUs are extremely busy, loud and somewhat chaotic environments because our nation is at war with a virus that is currently beating us in some states and towns. We will win the war, but we must make sure that we minimize the ultimate costs of winning it by doing everything possible to prevent further casualties and deaths. Stay safe and healthy. If you can, also stay home! Cheers,

FLIX By Alyn Darnay
Jon Stewart, the genius behind 16 years of the best version of Comedy Central’s Daily Show may have taken his leave from television, but he hasn’t left the spotlight for a minute. Recently, after nine years of lobbying, he showed up at a congressional hearing fighting for health benefits for the First Responders of 911. Then, he showed up on The Late Show with his buddy Steven Colbert, to deliver a scathing monologue about Senator Mitch McConnell. He has been an outspoken defender of the press, made headlines when he saved two goats that wandered onto the subway tracks in Brooklyn, hosted a telethon to raise money for autism, and wrestled Jon Cena on Monday Night Raw. Now he’s back directing films with his second offering, Irresistible, and it’s bang up good. Political, of course, funny, of course, uncomfortably right on, and containing a few twists that’ll really turn you around. It seems obvious that he partially based this terrific political satire on the 2017 special election for Georgia’s small 6th congressional district, which, if you don’t remember, was the most expensive House election in U.S. history. It generated and cost more than $55 million, as both political parties decided to ridiculously fight it out tooth and nail for the single seat.
WRITTEN & DIRECTED BY: JON STEWART CAST: STEVE CARELL, CHRIS COOPER, MACKENZIE DAVIS,
TOPHER GRACE, NATASHA LYONNE AND ROSE BYRNE IRRESISTIBLE Rating: 4 1/2 Stars (out of 5) Rated: R (language including sexual references) Running Time: 1 hours & 41 minutes
Here’s The Storyline… Irresistible relates the tale of highpowered Democratic political strategist Gary Zimmer (Corell), who has just lost the presidential election, as well as some of his confidence. He's looking for a “sure thing” election to run that will put him back into the winner’s box. When an assistant shows him the video of a retired Marine colonel (Chris Cooper), in a small rightwing Wisconsin town, standing up for the rights of his town’s
undocumented workers, Gary believes he has found the holy grail of easy elections. All he has to do is convince the colonel to run for mayor, a task that proves daunting. Gary eventually convinces the colonel to run, and the campaign is progressing well, until the Republicans decide to counter his efforts by sending in his brilliant nemesis Faith Brewster (Rose Byrne). What happens next is an out-of-control and often hilarious fight between the two rivals for what they think is the soul of Middle America. Jon Stewart’s daft satiric talent and canny political wit is woven throughout the film. Everything that made his Daily Show so great is on full display here, and it comes with the added maturity of an experienced hand. I can’t wait to see what he gives us next. Carell delivers what for him is an unusually nuanced performance, getting his laughs more from the overall situation than from his antics. Rose Byrne is terrific as the embodiment of every frustrating strong female any man has ever been challenged by. Chris Cooper adds another interesting character to his enormous list of credits, and Mackenzie Davis is cool and quiet as the colonel’s daughter, a seemingly shy but understanding pawn. Irresistible premiered everywhere on VOD June 26th. My take… Irresistible is a movie of the moment. The timing for the release of the film is perfect, coming out in that sweet spot just before this summer’s Democratic and Republican conventions. It gives us all something to ponder and discuss. Think I’ll watch it again. Don’t miss this one.

YOU SHOULD HAVE LEFT
It seems that there have been a few really enjoyable horror films around these days. You know the ones. They keep you guessing and at one or two points you get that scare that lifts you out of your chair and makes your heart beat faster. True horror aficionados live for these exquisite 'Levitation Scenes' and will stay through some pretty awful films if they come with a few of those moments. You Should Have Left is one of the better ones and comes with everything a true psychological horror film has to offer and more. For one thing, there’s Kevin Bacon right there on the screen and not three degrees apart from himself. You gotta love the Bacon. Then, there’s the beautiful Amanda Seyfried, as pretty and vulnerable as ever. Next, you have an interesting script based on a best selling novel, and lastly, there’s David Koepp, a talented director with a singular vision.
WRITTEN & DIRECTED BY: DAVID KOEPP BASED ON BEST SELLING BOOK BY: DANIEL KEHLMANN CAST: KEVIN BACON, AMANDA SEYFRIED, AVERY ESSEX, ELI POWERS AND GEOFF BELL
YOU SHOULD HAVE LEFT Rating: 4 Stars (out of 5) Rated: R (some violence, disturbing images, sexual content and language) Running Time: 1 hours & 33 minutes
You wouldn’t think matching Bacon, who is 61 years old, with 34 year old Seyfried in a marriage could be a basis for a good horror film. Rather, you’d expect it to be more of a murder mystery. However, here it works great by setting up an insurmountable problem that’s almost certain to end in disaster. Here’s The Storyline… In an effort to patch up their failing relationship, Theo Conroy (Bacon), a rich middleaged retiree, takes his young
actress wife Susanna (Seyfried) and their six-year-old daughter Ella (Essex) on a quickly planned vacation to a beautiful but isolated house rental in Wales. What starts out as a perfect place to enjoy each other’s company, soon turns into a series of strange events that lead to arguments, fears, anxiety, shocks, and to the slow unraveling of Theo’s mind. It all leads to the shocking discovery that, try as they may, they cannot leave the house. For some sinister reason, this house, with a strangely twisted history, wants to keep them forever. If this film seems to be satisfyingly familiar to you, it’s understandable, given that Bacon teamed up with David Koepp on another successful psychological horror film, 1999’s Stir of Echoes. You don’t think of Kevin Bacon as being in many horror films, but then you look at his career and you see films like Friday The Thirteenth, Flatliners, Tremors, and Hollow Man. You never know what to expect from him, but it’s always going to be good. You Should Have Left became available On Demand everywhere on Thursday, June 18th. My take… You Should Have Left is a good horror film with a great cast and some really good scares. The film is splendidly crafted, delightfully entangled, and an excellent film for a rainy night.
