We often hear the phrase “life is short. It is indeed a strange phenomemon that time definitely seems to speed up the older we get. When I was a bit younger (ok - a lot younger!) I studied a few years of Latin and my old Latin teacher (Mr Cook) was a great advocate of the philosophy of ‘Seize the Day’ or ‘Carpe Diem’ in the original Latin.

I’m not sure whether I have always been true to this through my life but it has ever been my aspiration. On the occasion where I have not ‘Carpe Diem’ it has often left me with a sense of regret and we do want to avoid regret don’t we!

Pastoral Le er & Church Meetings Time is a strange thing, full of paradoxes. Maybe you are aware of that from Doctor Who’s timey-wimey stuff, look back fondly to Back to the Future, or had your mind boggled in Avengers: Endgame. Or perhaps you just recognise that time flies when you’re enjoying yourself, but seems to drag in the boring bits. Time does seem to work in different ways. Another very current time paradox is the climate emergency. Creation is threatened by human actions, and there is a great urgency for change if we are to avoid total catastrophe. However, the need may be for us to slow down. In what we eat, we need to acknowledge the rhythm of the seasons, buying local wherever possible. In how we use our money, we need to stop and think about whether to buy and where to save. And I’ve been trying to change how I travel, walking and cycling locally, and sticking to trains further afield. That needs me to consider how I use my time, as travelling more slowly means I have to plan better, but it also brings the benefits of time to reflect, pray, and meet people. The changes I urgently need to make in my life shouldn’t bring

additional stress, but actually need me to slow down, to reflect, to acknowledge the deeper rhythms of life. This isn’t a new observation. Saint Benedict shaped centuries of monastic life around a combination of contemplation and action. Martin Luther recognised the need for time with God to shape everything else, saying “I have so much to do that I shall spend the first three hours in prayer.” They both shaped their lives following Jesus, whose life was enormously full of listening, talking and healing, always with rhythms of prayer within the busyness. That leads us to another time paradox. Throughout his ministry, Jesus called people to come, to follow, to be changed – and that call was issued with urgency. Jesus really wanted people to come closer, so they could find out how much God loved them, so they could be made new. For example, “as soon as Jesus saw James & John, he called them.” (Mark 1:20) When his disciples wanted to linger in one place Jesus said, “We must go on to the other villages round here, I have to preach in them also, because that is why I came.” (Mark

1:38) There was work to do, people to call, an urgency to reach out and invite in. Yet, however, immediate the response to that invitation to come & follow, it is then a lifelong task to follow Jesus. There may be an urgent reaction – but then we spend the rest of our lives working it out: reflecting, listening, trying things, getting things wrong, being forgiven, and trying again. It was the case for Simon and Mary, it was the case for Benedict and Luther, and it will be the case for every one of us. Time is a strange thing, full of paradoxes. We need to hear an urgent call to turn to God and to care for creation. That then needs us to slow down, and to spend the rest of our lives listening and learning what that means – for us and for all the world. May the summer give us all time & space to do that.

Parliament Blog & Tide Times I was pleased to host a round table event in the library at Elgin recently where I invited members of the various community councils from across Moray. This allowed us to come together and share concerns and topical issues both here in Moray and at Westminster. It was good to hear their views and I was delighted that we were able to discuss a number of issues around the table. I’ve received some positive feedback on this engagement and I’m hopeful this will become a more frequent event. Summer is here, I’m looking forward to being back in Moray for the recess and meeting up with constituents from across the area during my forthcoming surgery tour. People can come along without an appointment and raise any issues or concerns with me. Watch out for adverts in the local press with details of specific times and venues. Finally, by the time this article is published, the leadership election of the Conservative Party will be nearing a conclusion. I can guarantee that whoever is successful and becomes the next Prime Minister will be getting regular updates from me about the issues that are concerning people here in Moray. As always, I can be contacted on douglas.ross.mp@parliament.uk or on 01309 679253 or at 63 High Street, Forres IV36 1PB.

In recent months, we have seen a number of wildfires take hold in Moray and I have seen first-hand the blackened landscapes and the extent of the damage caused. I know that the increasing frequency of these fires locally is causing real concern in our rural communities, given the impact wildfires have on local landscapes, wildlife and habitats, as well as the potential threat they pose to infrastructure and homes. These recent fires were brought under control thanks to a monumental effort from local fire fighters, who worked alongside the police, gamekeepers, estate workers and other community volunteers, who rallied around to extinguish the fires under challenging conditions. I have had discussions with Police Scotland and the Fire and Rescue Service about the need to be better prepared for wildfires, given that we expect to have more long, dry spells of weather in the future.

Coarse Grasses in the Lawn 1 am prompted to mention this now as this spring saw an emergence of coarse grasses in many lawns, more so than usual. What are coarse grasses ? They are “wild” grasses, as opposed to “lawn” grasses, typically pale in colour, a thicker, coarse looking leaf, and often seem to grow in clumps in the lawn. They are seeded by other coarse grasses already in the lawn, or can be blown in from neighbouring land, or even deposited in bird droppings.

major infestation, that’s not realistic, and you might just have to get used to it, unless you are prepared to replace the lawn with a new one. They were prevalent this spring as lawn grasses were slow to start growing, because April and May saw fairly dry and cold conditions. Coarse grasses tend to tolerate and keep growing in these conditions, whereas lawn grasses don’t, so the wild stuff seems to dominate, even if only for a short spell until the main grass gets going. You can help prevent them spreading by mowing regularly. Also, if you give the lawn a quick swish with a spring rake prior to mowing, you will lift the long stems, which can then be mown off before they produce seed.

They are not weeds, so a lawn weedkiller won’t clear them. If there are just a few clumps, you can dig out a square of turf (like a carpet tile) and put it in the bin. You can replace with a patch of turf, or seed with lawn grass. If there is a

There is a good factsheet provided by the Royal Horticultural Society. If you search for www.rhs/coarsegrasses, it should take you straight there.

Community Based Nature Projects N A I R N R I V E R I N VA S I V E S P E C I E S P R O J E C T The banks, woodland and open spaces along the River Nairn are an integral part of our town, a natural asset that adds to locals’ quality of life. Riverside Park, near the Jubilee Bridge is a well-used but sometimes overlooked space that connects residential areas to the town centre. Green Hive and many other community groups want to see a flourishing riverside environment that provides a safe space to play and explore nature, for all ages. And now, users of Riverside Park are coming together to draw attention to this forgotten spot. Community groups such as Green Hive, Nairn PLAY and the

Forres and Nairn Welfare League are joining forces with Nairn’s Community Planning Partnership to develop their interest in enhancing the Riverside. The Nairn and Nairnshire Community Planning Partnership (NNCPP) brings the police, NHS, education, local council and voluntary groups together to enhance and develop our community ’s health and wellbeing. The NNCPP’s Places and Spaces subgroup is currently focused on Riverside Park, and will later turn to Tradespark. “We seek to make our open spaces accessible and useable, and are bringing groups

together to develop this space for the good of the community.” Cllr Tom Heggie, Place and Spaces Group Chair. As custodians of the Riverside football pitch and changing rooms, Forres and Nairn Welfare League portion part of their income to maintaining these important facilities. In the future they plan to extend the changing room area at either side, giving room to store equipment that will facilitate maintenance of the football park. “We are celebrating our 20th anniversary this year and we are committed to the area long term. In the past, we have teamed up with other local sports clubs to provide support for the pitch and we very much welcome other partnerships to further that and any redevelopment of the surrounding area.” John Rowley, FNWFA Executive Committee Member Nairn PLAY is a constituted community group which aims to improve play facilities at the riverside in Nairn. “It has been very helpful getting the help and support from Green Hive, Keeping

Nairnshire Colourful, the Welfare League and skatepark users. I'm delighted that Nairn PLAY was invited to work as a member of Places and Spaces.” Kat Woods, Nairn PLAY vice chair Young people that use the skate park are also joining efforts to improve the area. "I think it's a great idea for skaters and members of the Nairn community to come together and express the interests we have in the riverside area … the many of us who use the skatepark for its intended purposes feel that it is overlooked. So this would be a great opportunity to show that there is a community based around the skatepark … and convince organisations, groups and the public that Nairn

skatepark and the surrounding area is somewhere for improvement.” Dayne Inglis Green Hive’s Nairn River Invasive Species Project is working to reduce species such as Giant Hogweed from our riverbanks, creating a more biodiverse and healthy riverside. As part of this project we are planning a Family Day at Riverside Park, inviting members of the public to help clear Himalayan Balsam plants from the woodland area along the riverside. The other Places and Spaces members are keen to join in, making this a collective family event. The event, on Saturday 20th July from 12pm, will be a day of family activities for our community to enjoy our riverside environment. Green

Hive will have opportunities to learn about and remove invasive species, while our Countryside Ranger, the Welfare Football League, the SISI project, Fire Scotland and others will lead nature trails, sports, bushcraft and other activities. Attendees will be encouraged to give thoughts and hopes for the park’s development, so come along and share your ideas. “This will be an open-ended process and other groups that regularly use this park are invited to make themselves known” Cllr Tom Heggie. By Kirsty Wark

By David Walliams

Scotland, 1950s Walter MacMillan is bewitched by the clever, glamorous Jean Thompson and can't believe his luck when she agrees to marry him. Neither can she, for Walter represents a steady and loving man who can perhaps quiet the demons inside her. Yet their home on remote Loch Doon soon becomes a prison for Jean and neither a young family, nor Walter's care, can seem to save her. Many years later, Walter is with his adult children and adored grandchildren on the shores of Loch Doon where the family has been holidaying for two generations. But the shadows of the past stretch over them and will turn all their lives upside down on one fateful weekend.

The Planets

Andrew Cohen with Professor Brian Cox A sweeping, stellar investigation to the worlds we share in our solar system. Drawing from the very latest research from an armada of probes exploring our planetary neighbours, The Planets sets out the dynamic history and present of our immediate universe.

By Onjali Q Rauf This is the story about how one ordinary nine-year-old child and three classmates are full of empathy for Ahmet, a boy that comes to their school as a refugee from Syria (he is the boy at the back of the class). Through their sensitivity, curiosity, ingenuity, bravery and innocent niceness, they make a massive impact on Ahmet’s life, friends, class, school, community and wider world. There’s a lovely lack of stereotyping on gender and backstory for the narrator, which adds to the message of not judging people before you know them.
