We often hear the phrase “life is short”. It is indeed a strange phenomemon that time definitely seems to speed up the older we get. When I was a bit younger (ok - a lot younger!) I studied a few years of Latin and my old Latin teacher (Mr Cook) was a great advocate of the philosophy of ‘Seize the Day’ or ‘Carpe Diem’ in the original Latin. I’m not sure whether I have always been true to this through my life but it has ever been my aspiration. On the occasion where I have not ‘Carpe Diem’ it has often left me with a sense of regret and we do want to avoid regret don’t we!

Pastoral Le er & Church Meetings Anyone who has ever been present at the birth of a child cannot but be overwhelmed and amazed at the birth of a new life into this world. The tiny hands...the intricate fingers …the perfectly formed nails. All in miniature. Allied to a brain, mind and intellect that over time will learn, form opinions and make decisions that shall have lifelong and eternal consequences. As the psalmist thought about these things he wrote, ‘I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, And that my soul knows very well’, Ps 139:14 David realised that there is more to our birth than meets the human eye. He recognised that humanity is more complex than the physical, the mental, the intellectual and the emotional. He understood that we are also spiritual. That deep within every one of us is a soul. A soul that has originally been created for a living relationship and fellowship with its Creator, God. A God who wills us to ‘worship Him in Spirit and in truth’. Sadly, however, interference in the form of sin has blocked out our ability to relate positively and constructively with God. Instead, of embracing God’s best plan for our lives we resist and declare our independence of Him. An

open warfare of mind and rebellion of will against God’s best intentions for our lives. Believing ourselves to be wise we simply confirm our own foolishness. Yet, the bible reveals to us that we have the opportunity, to experience a true, lasting and tangible peace for our souls. A spiritual peace not purchased with silver and gold but received through faith in Jesus’ finished work on the Cross. A peace that once established by God with those who turn from sin and truly seek the Lord will last for all of time and all of eternity. Irrespective of His people’s unbelief, doubts and spiritual falls. Where can I get hold of this peace you might ask? Well, the Lord invites you to come to the Cross where He promises you that “though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall be as wool’, Isa 1:18 A peace that satisfies. As the Gaelic bard, Murchadh a’ Cheisdear so poetically describes it: ‘Tha agam ann an Criosd na tha m’anam bochd ag iarraidh, ‘S cha’n abair mi gu siorraidh nach leoir e; Tha’n t-uisge ‘dol ‘n a fhìon ann, tha mil, is bainne, ‘s biadh ann, Tha

Parliament Blog & Tide Times For most people living on the mainland with a friend or relative about to go through a particularly difficult procedure or potential life changing diagnosis, it is relatively easy and inexpensive for them to travel and be with them for emotional support. This is not the case for islanders. Since NHS Western Isles’ introduction of more stringent enforcement of the rules for authorising escorts for NHS patients, I have heard from dozens of distressed people who had their applications denied. This is an issue I have been lobbying both the Health Board and the Scottish Government on, and I was pleased with the Health Secretary’s intervention ordering a working group to examine this issue. I look forward to seeing what comes out of this and I hope we will see a more patient-centred policy going forward.

Vaccinations I am urging island parents to ensure their children receive lifesaving vaccinations. Vaccinations such as the MMR are the biggest health successes of the last century and are the only way to protect your child against some serious diseases. I asked NHS Western Isles for statistics on the uptake of the MMR vaccine locally with reports of reduced uptake worldwide. I was pleased to hear from NHS Western Isles that uptake of the MMR first dose in the Western Isles is back above the target of 95% despite a drop in uptake in 2017. Overall 98.1% of Western Isles children have received at least one MMR vaccination by the age of 6, compared to 96.3% for Scotland. The development of effective vaccines has led to a huge decrease in childhood deaths and I would urge parents to help maintain high levels of uptake by ensuring children receive the vaccine.

INTERNATIONAL JOKE DAY 1 S T J U LY 2 0 1 9

Knock, knock. Who’s there? Wooden shoe. Wooden shoe, who? Wooden shoe like to know!

Why is Cinderella so bad at football?

My email password has been hacked. That’s the third time I’ve had to rename the cat.

I once fell in love with a girl who only knew 4 vowels.

Why is Peter Pan flying all the time?

She didn’t know I existed.

He Neverlands!

Because she always runs away from the ball!

Never trust maths teachers who use graph paper. How does the Man in the Moon cut his hair?

They’re always plotting something.

Eclipse it!

Why was the broom late for school? It overswept!

What would a parrot says that got its leg stuck in a freezer? Shiver me timbers. #jo keday

TheIs h Islel of Ha Harris G Gibbbson by Tommy Cummins of Discount Suit Company, London, UK. "A simple classic that really proves its point, though the devil is certainly ly in the detail."

INGREDIENTS: 60ml Isle of Harris Gin 10ml of Dolin Vermouth de Chambéry (Dry) 10ml of Juniper and Sea Kelp infused vinegar. Pickling onions

ME THODOLOGY: 1. Pour 400ml of White Distilled D Vinegar into a Kilner jar. 2. Add a handful of Greek Juniper berries plus a handful and a pincch of dried Kelp. 3. Add pickling onions (e e.g. Silverskin, Pearl), seal jar and leave to infusse for 10 days. 4. Add ice to an already chilled c mixing glass. 5. Pour in the gin, vermouth and vinegar before mixing with a teardrop bar spoon. 6. Julep strain into a chillled vintage coupette glass. 7. Garnish with two of th he pickled onions.

Tommy Cummins is the bar manager of Discount Suit Company in London, UK. This independent cocktaail bar is situated moments from Spitalfields Market and focuses on great cockktails made with traditional methods and fo orgotten classic recipes. All of this soundtracked by a big love for all things Soul - especially Northern. “A simple classic that really proves its point, though the devil is certainly in the detail. We infused the onions o with the juniper berries and sea kelp to drive home the maritime idyll an nd to represent both the gin ( juniper berrie es), and the island (kelp). The Planets

Andrew Cohen with Professor Brian Cox A sweeping, stellar investigation to the worlds we share in our solar system. Drawing from the very latest research from an armada of probes exploring our planetary neighbours, The Planets sets out the dynamic history and present of our immediate universe.

By Onjali Q Rauf This is the story about how one ordinary nine-year-old child and three classmates are full of empathy for Ahmet, a boy that comes to their school as a refugee from Syria (he is the boy at the back of the class). Through their sensitivity, curiosity, ingenuity, bravery and innocent niceness, they make a massive impact on Ahmet’s life, friends, class, school, community and wider world. There’s a lovely lack of stereotyping on gender and backstory for the narrator, which adds to the message of not judging people before you know them.

Live your Best Life… Welcome to the Fashion page, where I share my top clothing style tips with you all. With love and style. da

A m axnx

Stylist In Training... ‘Athleisure is a trend in fashion in which clothing designed for workouts and other athletic activities is worn in other settings, such as at the workplace, at school, or at other casual or social occasions.’ wikipedia. I never thought I would EVER wear trainers unless inside a gym (and that dear readers can be somewhat a rare occasion) . If I couldn’t wear heels then flat ballet pumps all the way - they didn’t feel very exciting but at least I could walk. Then one day I discovered sneakers, and suddenly sportswear took on a new meaning. I have since been on a quest to see how many ways I can incorporate these comfy little gems into my wardrobe. Some call it ‘Sports Luxe’ some ‘Athleisure’ - either way they make me feel I can walk that extra mile. ‘Athleisure’ (as described above) is an ever growing and

evolving trend and allows you to bridge the gap between smart/casual. One of my favourite looks is to wear a blazer, slogan tee, skinnies and my silver sequin trainers. I’ve even been known to wear track pants to a very important audition but because my hair was done, the blazer was structured AND I had my accessories on I still felt smart, polished and together. Not to mention no throbbing feet! In the end this is the key to true style - to feel like you and know you can walk in a room with an easy confidence.

My Top 5 Tips for Trainer Style... 1. Pick a pair that suit your feet. 2. Go for Sparkle or Glitter for weekend/lunch dates 3. Leather styles are generally better to keep feet fresh (or wear trainer socks)

4. Pick a colour that will work with all your wardrobe, or are neutral enough to tone in. 5. Pair with everything! From dresses to skirts, suits to jumpsuits, rest assured you can so rock this...

The most important rule is to stay true to who you are and have FUN!
