We often hear the phrase “life is short”. It is indeed a strange phenomemon that time definitely seems to speed up the older we get. When I was a bit younger (ok - a lot younger!) I studied a few years of Latin and my old Latin teacher (Mr Cook) was a great advocate of the philosophy of ‘Seize the Day’ or ‘Carpe Diem’ in the original Latin.

I’m not sure whether I have always been true to this through my life but it has ever been my aspiration. On the occasion where I have not ‘Carpe Diem’ it has often left me with a sense of regret and we do want to avoid regret don’t we!

Pastoral Le er & Church Meetings Wow, those DIY SOS home renovation programmes on TV get me every time! They are just so moving. My wife can’t believe I get so emotional – after my many years in social work and knowing so many sad stories. I am struck by many things in the show. Firstly, there is the combination of sadness sometimes, utter desperation – and then incredible courage for the family themselves. They are often dealing with almost impossible demands and are very limited by their surroundings. Secondly, there is the ingenuity and vision of the designers to see the space and environment differently – that is such a talent. Then, there is the willingness and flexibility of the local teams and tradesmen to do their work. Finally, there is the kindness of the community to pitch in, be part of the process and to make a real difference. It is tremendously good news and so refreshing against the backdrop of much other news where we see a different side of our humanity or the potential evil and confusion in our world. The Gospels show Jesus’ way of life

to be like this very good news and more. He said of himself, “The Son of Man came not to be served but to serve and to give himself as a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45). Jesus dealt with many desperate life circumstances with incredible compassion, wisdom and insight and his basic model for humanity was to serve. That was so unexpected and counter to what people thought a great leader should be, but it was his way and his example. And he even went beyond service to sacrifice in his death for us – to win us back from all that evil and confusion that seems to control us. Many of the families on the TV show have reached a point where they cannot help themselves – they need outside intervention and it is lifechanging. There is a challenge, however, in Christian faith, that goes beyond kindness, good as that is. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6). His hope for all is that we would see that trusting in him is the good news that rescues us and releases us into love.

Jesus would have loved this TV programme as well although there is one great story in Mark 2 where he inspires a sort of “anti-DIY” approach. Four friends bring their desperately needy and disabled friend on a mat to Jesus, but the house is so busy they decide to break through the flat roof to let their friend down! No one seems to worry too much about the damage as he brings healing to the man, joy to his friends and amazement to everyone. (I suspect Jesus would have offered to fix the roof for free later!) For DIY SOS, friends bring their needy neighbours to the fore and it is really an expression of love and humanity at its best which Jesus would have loved. As we see who Jesus really is in the Gospel narratives and connect with local churches seeking to follow him, there will be no end of SOS projects around us to which we can give our faith and talents.

Parliament Blog & Tide Times Foster care is challenging but extremely rewarding. Foster Care Fortnight is The Fostering Network’s annual campaign to raise the profile of fostering and to show how foster care transforms lives. Last week there was a debate in the Scottish Parliament regarding Foster Care. This offered an opportunity to highlight The Fostering Network’s annual campaign as a valuable awareness-raising campaign. Foster carers can, and do, make a real difference to the lives of children and young people. 93 per cent of local authorities and independent foster carers have achieved grades of “good” or better, however, 45 per cent have experienced a net loss in the number of foster carers. The Highlands is compounded by sparse population and geography.

With Climate Change a much talked about and topical issue, it is important that we don’t just brush it off as an others news story or as scaremongering. There are many things we can do as individuals to help the environment, and climate change. For example, when I’m both in London and at home in Inverness, I often choose to cycle rather than drive long distances. Not only does this have personal benefits for my physical health, but it’s a great way to reduce fuel emissions. An added bonus is that we are lucky enough to have excellent initiatives, like the Velocity Café and Bike Shop in Inverness, so should you need any help with repairs or if you’re interested in getting involved with a cycling group, they are the people to see!

The Planets

Andrew Cohen with Professor Brian Cox A sweeping, stellar investigation to the worlds we share in our solar system. Drawing from the very latest research from an armada of probes exploring our planetary neighbours, The Planets sets out the dynamic history and present of our immediate universe.

By Onjali Q Rauf This is the story about how one ordinary nine-year-old child and three classmates are full of empathy for Ahmet, a boy that comes to their school as a refugee from Syria (he is the boy at the back of the class). Through their sensitivity, curiosity, ingenuity, bravery and innocent niceness, they make a massive impact on Ahmet’s life, friends, class, school, community and wider world. There’s a lovely lack of stereotyping on gender and backstory for the narrator, which adds to the message of not judging people before you know them.

The Butterfly Room By Lucinda Riley Posy Montague is approaching her seventieth birthday and is unexpectedly reunited with a long lost lover who cruelly rejected her. But exactly what are Freddie’s motives and what dark secrets does he have to hide?

TheIs h Islel of H Haarris G Gibbbson by Tommy Cummins of Discount Suit Company, London, UK. "A simple classic that really proves its point, though the devil is certainly in the detail."

INGREDIENTS: 60ml Isle of Harris Gin 10ml of Dolin Vermouth de Chambéry (Dry) 10ml of Juniper and Sea Kelp infused vinegar. Pickling onions

ME THODOLOGY: 1. Pour 400ml of White D Distilled Vinegar into a Kilner jar. 2. Add a handful of Greek Juniper berries plus a handful and a pincch of dried Kelp. 3. Add pickling onions (e e.g. Silverskin, Pearl), seal jar and leave to infusse for 10 days. 4. Add ice to an already cchilled mixing glass. 5. Pour in the gin, vermouth and vinegar before mixing with a teardrop bar spoon. 6. Julep strain into a chillled vintage coupette glass. 7. Garnish with two of th he pickled onions.

Tommy Cummins is the bar manager of Discount Suit Company in London, UK. This independent cocktaail bar is situated moments from Spitalfields Market and focuses on great cockktails made with traditional methods and fo orgotten classic recipes. All of this soundtracked by a big love for all things Soul - especially Northern. “A simple classic that really proves its point, though the deviil is certainly in the detail. We infused the onions o with the juniper berries and sea kelp to drive home the maritime idyll an nd to represent both the gin ( juniper berrie es), and the island (kelp). Also, Isle Of Harris Gin stands with its head held high against the pickling liquor. It’s great to try som mething differ e ent in the gin world and Isle of Harris are doing that. While everryone is doing heavy juniper London Dry sttyles, they are keeping to their heritage of the island. This is shown in that lo ovely maritime smell, with hints of pine nee edles and dried oranges. Looking forward to se eeing what you release next."

Stylist In Training... ‘Athleisure is a trend in fashion in which clothing designed for workouts and other athletic activities is worn in other settings, such as at the workplace, at school, or at other casual or social occasions.’ wikipedia. I never thought I would EVER wear trainers unless inside a gym (and that dear readers can be somewhat a rare occasion) . If I couldn’t wear heels then flat ballet pumps all the way - they didn’t feel very exciting but at least I could walk. Then one day I discovered sneakers, and suddenly sportswear took on a new meaning. I have since been on a quest to see how many ways I can incorporate these comfy little gems into my wardrobe. Some call it ‘Sports Luxe’ some ‘Athleisure’ - either way they make me feel I can walk that extra mile. ‘Athleisure’ (as described above) is an ever growing and

evolving trend and allows you to bridge the gap between smart/casual. One of my favourite looks is to wear a blazer, slogan tee, skinnies and my silver sequin trainers. I’ve even been known to wear track pants to a very important audition but because my hair was done, the blazer was structured AND I had my accessories on I still felt smart, polished and together. Not to mention no throbbing feet! In the end this is the key to true style - to feel like you and know you can walk in a room with an easy confidence.

My Top 5 Tips for Trainer Style... 1. Pick a pair that suit your feet. 2. Go for Sparkle or Glitter for weekend/lunch dates 3. Leather styles are generally better to keep feet fresh (or wear trainer socks)

4. Pick a colour that will work with all your wardrobe, or are neutral enough to tone in. 5. Pair with everything! From dresses to skirts, suits to jumpsuits, rest assured you can so rock this...

The most important rule is to stay true to who you are and have FUN!
