Pastoral Le er & Church Meetings Recently the TV series Game of Thrones ended after eight seasons. Although I have never seen the series, I understand it was shown in 207 countries and very popular. I also read that a lot of time, effort and work was put into its production. I understand Game of Thrones was filmed in ten countries; it used 12,986 extras and two thousand crew members in Northern Ireland alone; it included three thousand pyrotechnic effects, fifty miles of fabric for costumes, and more than twenty-four thousand pounds of silicone for prosthetics; wigs for one of the lead characters required two months of testing and seven prototypes. The series received 174 award nominations and won sixtythree times. If the production of a TV series like Games of Thrones strived for professional excellence, how much more does God deserve excellence from us? No one in Christian history was more passionately committed to personal excellence than the Apostle Paul. He encouraged excellence in our thoughts: “Whatever is true, whatever is honourable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if

there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things” (Philippians 4:8). He encouraged excellence in our words: “Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear” (Ephesians 4:29). He encouraged excellence in our actions: “Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness” (1 Timothy 6:11). What a difference it would make if we followed that advice in our homes, families and workplace! Do our lives set an example of personal excellence in what we do and say? Although we are human, we recognise that we all make mistakes. I know I do. However personal excellence isn't about being perfect or always being right. It is about recognising our need of God's love and help. In God's wisdom He created us with a free will. This means that God has given us the ability to choose and decide what we do and how we will live. While God is a Holy God, all knowing and all powerful He doesn't arrange our lives for us. God doesn't treat us as puppets by pulling the

strings of our lives. The challenge then is that we can decide whether we want to seek personal excellence or just do our own thing. To seek personal excellence involves trust and dependence on God. As an old gospel hymn says: Trust and obey, For there’s no other way to be happy in Jesus But to trust and obey.” God, through the Holy Spirit can work in and through us when we recognise our need and seek Him through faith. The Christian message of Jesus' death and resurrection for us is good news as it brings forgiveness of sin, new life and hope. While we may not be nominated for an award, we can live a life of excellence when we have God at the centre of our lives, making our lives attractive as well as challenging.

Parliament Blog & Tide Times I was pleased to host a round table event in the library at Elgin recently where I invited members of the various community councils from across Moray. This allowed us to come together and share concerns and topical issues both here in Moray and at Westminster. It was good to hear their views and I was delighted that we were able to discuss a number of issues around the table. I’ve received some positive feedback on this engagement and I’m hopeful this will become a more frequent event. Summer is here, I’m looking forward to being back in Moray for the recess and meeting up with constituents from across the area during my forthcoming surgery tour. People can come along without an appointment and raise any issues or concerns with me. Watch out for adverts in the local press with details of specific times and venues. Finally, by the time this article is published, the leadership election of the Conservative Party will be nearing a conclusion. I can guarantee that whoever is successful and becomes the next Prime Minister will be getting regular updates from me about the issues that are concerning people here in Moray. In recent months, we have seen a number of wildfires take hold in Moray and I have seen first-hand the blackened landscapes and the extent of the damage caused. I know that the increasing frequency of these fires locally is causing real concern in our rural communities, given the impact wildfires have on local landscapes, wildlife and habitats, as well as the potential threat they pose to infrastructure and homes. These recent fires were brought under control thanks to a monumental effort from local fire fighters, who worked alongside the police, gamekeepers, estate workers and other community volunteers, who rallied around to extinguish the fires under challenging conditions. I have had discussions with Police Scotland and the Fire and Rescue Service about the need to be better prepared for wildfires, given that we expect to have more long, dry spells of weather in the future.

Stylist In Training... ‘Athleisure is a trend in fashion in which clothing designed for workouts and other athletic activities is worn in other settings, such as at the workplace, at school, or at other casual or social occasions.’ wikipedia. I never thought I would EVER wear trainers unless inside a gym (and that dear readers can be somewhat a rare occasion) . If I couldn’t wear heels then flat ballet pumps all the way - they didn’t feel very exciting but at least I could walk. Then one day I discovered sneakers, and suddenly sportswear took on a new meaning. I have since been on a quest to see how many ways I can incorporate these comfy little gems into my wardrobe. Some call it ‘Sports Luxe’ some ‘Athleisure’ - either way they make me feel I can walk that extra mile. ‘Athleisure’ (as described above) is an ever growing and

evolving trend and allows you to bridge the gap between smart/casual. One of my favourite looks is to wear a blazer, slogan tee, skinnies and my silver sequin trainers. I’ve even been known to wear track pants to a very important audition but because my hair was done, the blazer was structured AND I had my accessories on I still felt smart, polished and together. Not to mention no throbbing feet! In the end this is the key to true style - to feel like you and know you can walk in a room with an easy confidence.

My Top 5 Tips for Trainer Style... 1. Pick a pair that suit your feet. 2. Go for Sparkle or Glitter for weekend/lunch dates 3. Leather styles are generally better to keep feet fresh (or wear trainer socks)

4. Pick a colour that will work with all your wardrobe, or are neutral enough to tone in. 5. Pair with everything! From dresses to skirts, suits to jumpsuits, rest assured you can so rock this...

Community Based Nature Projects N A I R N R I V E R I N VA S I V E S P E C I E S P R O J E C T The banks, woodland and open spaces along the River Nairn are an integral part of our town, a natural asset that adds to locals’ quality of life. Riverside Park, near the Jubilee Bridge is a well-used but sometimes overlooked space that connects residential areas to the town centre. Green Hive and many other community groups want to see a flourishing riverside environment that provides a safe space to play and explore nature, for all ages. And now, users of Riverside Park are coming together to draw attention to this forgotten spot. Community groups such as Green Hive, Nairn PLAY and the

Forres and Nairn Welfare League are joining forces with Nairn’s Community Planning Partnership to develop their interest in enhancing the Riverside. The Nairn and Nairnshire Community Planning Partnership (NNCPP) brings the police, NHS, education, local council and voluntary groups together to enhance and develop our community ’s health and wellbeing. The NNCPP’s Places and Spaces subgroup is currently focused on Riverside Park, and will later turn to Tradespark. “We seek to make our open spaces accessible and useable, and are bringing groups

together to develop this space for the good of the community.” Cllr Tom Heggie, Place and Spaces Group Chair. As custodians of the Riverside football pitch and changing rooms, Forres and Nairn Welfare League portion part of their income to maintaining these important facilities. INGREDIENTS: 60ml Isle of Harris Gin 10ml of Dolin Vermouth de Chambéry (Dry) 10ml of Juniper and Sea Kelp infused vinegar. Pickling onions

ME THODOLOGY: 1. Pour 400ml of White Distilled Vinegar into a Kilner jar. 2. Add a handful of Greek Juniper berries plus a handful and a pinch of dried Kelp. 3. Add pickling onions (e.g. Silverskin, Pearl), seal jar and leave to infuse for 10 days. 4. Add ice to an already chilled mixing glass. 5. Pour in the gin, vermouth and vinegar before mixing with a teardrop bar spoon. 6. Julep strain into a chilled vintage coupette glass. 7. Garnish with two of the pickled onions.

While everyone is doing heavy juniper London Dry styles, they are keeping to their heritage of the island. This is shown in that lovely maritime smell, with hints of pine needles and dried oranges.
