We often hear the phrase “life is short”. It is indeed a strange phenomemon that time definitely seems to speed up the older we get. When I was a bit younger (ok - a lot younger!) I studied a few years of Latin and my old Latin teacher (Mr Cook) was a great advocate of the philosophy of ‘Seize the Day’ or ‘Carpe Diem’ in the original Latin.

KAGA ϭϵ ,ŝŐŚ ^ƚƌĞĞƚ͕ dƵƌƌŝī 01888 568067

I’m not sure whether I have always been true to this through my life but it has ever been my aspiration. On the occasion where I have not ‘Carpe Diem’ it has often left me with a sense of regret and we do want to avoid regret don’t we!

Pastoral Le er & Church Meetings Recently the TV series Game of Thrones ended after eight seasons. Although I have never seen the series, I understand it was shown in 207 countries and very popular. I also read that a lot of time, effort and work was put into its production. I understand Game of Thrones was filmed in ten countries; it used 12,986 extras and two thousand crew members in Northern Ireland alone; it included three thousand pyrotechnic effects, fifty miles of fabric for costumes, and more than twenty-four thousand pounds of silicone for prosthetics; wigs for one of the lead characters required two months of testing and seven prototypes. The series received 174 award nominations and won sixty-three times. If the production of a TV series like Games of Thrones strived for professional excellence, how much more does God deserve excellence from us? No one in Christian history was more passionately committed to personal excellence than the Apostle Paul. He encouraged excellence in our thoughts: “Whatever is true, whatever is honourable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is

lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things” (Philippians 4:8). He encouraged excellence in our words: “Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear” (Ephesians 4:29). He encouraged excellence in our actions: “Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness” (1 Timothy 6:11). What a difference it would make if we followed that advice in our homes, families and workplace! Do our lives set an example of personal excellence in what we do and say? Although we are human, we recognise that we all make mistakes. I know I do. However personal excellence isn't about being perfect or always being right. It is about recognising our need of God's love and help. In God's wisdom He created us with a free will. This means that God has given us the ability to choose and decide what we do and how we will live. While God is a Holy God, all knowing and all powerful He doesn't

arrange our lives for us. God doesn't treat us as puppets by pulling the strings of our lives. The challenge then is that we can decide whether we want to seek personal excellence or just do our own thing. To seek personal excellence involves trust and dependence on God. As an old gospel hymn says: Trust and obey, For there’s no other way to be happy in Jesus But to trust and obey.” God, through the Holy Spirit can work in and through us when we recognise our need and seek Him through faith. The Christian message of Jesus' death and resurrection for us is good news as it brings forgiveness of sin, new life and hope. While we may not be nominated for an award, we can live a life of excellence when we have God at the centre of our lives, making our lives attractive as well as challenging.

Adult Fiction

The House by the Loch Junior Fiction

By Kirsty Wark

By David Walliams

Scotland, 1950s Walter MacMillan is bewitched by the clever, glamorous Jean Thompson and can't believe his luck when she agrees to marry him. Neither can she, for Walter represents a steady and loving man who can perhaps quiet the demons inside her. Yet their home on remote Loch Doon soon becomes a prison for Jean and neither a young family, nor Walter's care, can seem to save her. The Planets

Andrew Cohen with Professor Brian Cox A sweeping, stellar investigation to the worlds we share in our solar system. Drawing from the very latest research from an armada of probes exploring our planetary neighbours, The Planets sets out the dynamic history and present of our immediate universe.

By Onjali Q Rauf This is the story about how one ordinary nine-year-old child and three classmates are full of empathy for Ahmet, a boy that comes to their school as a refugee from Syria (he is the boy at the back of the class). Through their sensitivity, curiosity, ingenuity, bravery and innocent niceness, they make a massive impact on Ahmet’s life, friends, class, school, community and wider world. There’s a lovely lack of stereotyping on gender and backstory for the narrator, which adds to the message of not judging people before you know them.

Community Based Nature Projects N A I R N R I V E R I N VA S I V E S P E C I E S P R O J E C T The banks, woodland and open spaces along the River Nairn are an integral part of our town, a natural asset that adds to locals’ quality of life. Riverside Park, near the Jubilee Bridge is a well-used but sometimes overlooked space that connects residential areas to the town centre. Green Hive and many other community groups want to see a flourishing riverside environment that provides a safe space to play and explore nature, for all ages. And now, users of Riverside Park are coming together to draw attention to this forgotten spot. Community groups such as Green Hive, Nairn PLAY and the

Forres and Nairn Welfare League are joining forces with Nairn’s Community Planning Partnership to develop their interest in enhancing the Riverside. The Nairn and Nairnshire Community Planning Partnership (NNCPP) brings the police, NHS, education, local council and voluntary groups together to enhance and develop our community ’s health and wellbeing. The NNCPP’s Places and Spaces subgroup is currently focused on Riverside Park, and will later turn to Tradespark. “We seek to make our open spaces accessible and useable, and are bringing groups

together to develop this space for the good of the community.” Cllr Tom Heggie, Place and Spaces Group Chair. As custodians of the Riverside football pitch and changing rooms, Forres and Nairn Welfare League portion part of their income to maintaining these important facilities. In the future they plan to extend the changing room area at either side, giving room to store equipment that will facilitate maintenance of the football park. “We are celebrating our 20th anniversary this year and we are committed to the area long term. In the past, we have teamed up with other local sports clubs to provide support for the pitch and we very much welcome other partnerships to further that and any redevelopment of the surrounding area.” John Rowley, FNWFA Executive Committee Member Nairn PLAY is a constituted community group which aims to improve play facilities at the riverside in Nairn. “It has been very helpful getting the help and support from Green Hive, Keeping

As part of this project we are planning a Family Day at Riverside Park, inviting members of the public to help clear Himalayan Balsam plants from the woodland area along the riverside. The other Places and Spaces members are keen to join in, making this a collective family event. The event, on Saturday 20th July from 12pm, will be a day of family activities for our community to enjoy our riverside environment. Green

Hive will have opportunities to learn about and remove invasive species, while our Countryside Ranger, the Welfare Football League, the SISI project, Fire Scotland and others will lead nature trails, sports, bushcraft and other activities. Attendees will be encouraged to give thoughts and hopes for the park’s development, so come along and share your ideas. “This will be an open-ended process and other groups that regularly use this park are invited to make themselves known” Cllr Tom Heggie. Stylist In Training... ‘Athleisure is a trend in fashion in which clothing designed for workouts and other athletic activities is worn in other settings, such as at the workplace, at school, or at other casual or social occasions.’ wikipedia. I never thought I would EVER wear trainers unless inside a gym (and that dear readers can be somewhat a rare occasion) . If I couldn’t wear heels then flat ballet pumps all the way - they didn’t feel very exciting but at least I could walk. Then one day I discovered sneakers, and suddenly sportswear took on a new meaning. I have since been on a quest to see how many ways I can incorporate these comfy little gems into my wardrobe. Some call it ‘Sports Luxe’ some ‘Athleisure’ - either way they make me feel I can walk that extra mile. ‘Athleisure’ (as described above) is an ever growing and

evolving trend and allows you to bridge the gap between smart/casual. One of my favourite looks is to wear a blazer, slogan tee, skinnies and my silver sequin trainers. I’ve even been known to wear track pants to a very important audition but because my hair was done, the blazer was structured AND I had my accessories on I still felt smart, polished and together. Not to mention no throbbing feet! In the end this is the key to true style - to feel like you and know you can walk in a room with an easy confidence.

My Top 5 Tips for Trainer Style... 1. Pick a pair that suit your feet. 2. Go for Sparkle or Glitter for weekend/lunch dates 3. Leather styles are generally better to keep feet fresh (or wear trainer socks)

4. Pick a colour that will work with all your wardrobe, or are neutral enough to tone in. 5. Pair with everything! From dresses to skirts, suits to jumpsuits, rest assured you can so rock this...

The most important rule is to stay true to who you are and have FUN!

TheIsle of Harris Gibson by Tommy Cummins of Discount Suit Company, London, UK. "A simple classic that really proves its point, though the devil is certainly in the detail."

Tommy Cummins is the bar manager of Discount Suit Company in London, UK. This independent cocktail bar is situated moments from Spitalfields Market and focuses on great cocktails made with traditional methods and forgotten classic recipes. All of this soundtracked by a big love for all things Soul - especially Northern. “A simple classic that really proves its point, though the devil is certainly in the detail. We infused the onions with the juniper berries and sea kelp to drive home the maritime idyll and to represent both the gin ( juniper berries), and the island (kelp). Also, Isle Of Harris Gin stands with its head held high against the pickling liquor. It’s great to try something different in the gin world and Isle of Harris are doing that. While everyone is doing heavy juniper London Dry styles, they are keeping to their heritage of the island. This is shown in that lovely maritime smell, with hints of pine needles and dried oranges. Looking forward to seeing what you release next."
