#EndHunger@WIN Arya Kaji, Year 6, Head of Innovation
Arya Kaji is in Year 6, and is the Head of Innovation for Primary. Along with her mentor, Ms. Teresa, and her Innovation Coordinators, Sreeradha, Marcus, and Mohsin, she initiated a very fruitful campaign called #EndHunger@WIN . In this insightful article, Arya talks about her inspiration behind the campaign and how, through a very interesting range of activities, the Primary Innovation Team has brought together the entire school community towards a good cause.
How is world hunger still such a major problem? The main cause of hunger worldwide is poverty. Millions of people around the world are simply too poor to be able to buy food. They also lack the resources to grow their own food, such as arable land and the means to harvest, process, and store food. Today, nearly 2.5 billion people, almost one-third of the world's population, have some level of hunger, due to lacking the resources to purchase food, while 800,000 people go entire days without eating at least once. When I got appointed as Head of Innovation for Primary, I knew that I wanted to bring a change to the society in some way, but didn’t have a clear idea what that would be. The thought of a food campaign came to my mind while watching a video of people struggling and dying out of hunger. I realized that hunger is one of the worst things anyone could go through. I remembered my mom making me understand the importance of food, giving me examples of the homeless and poor people who starve in under-developed countries. How lucky I was to get meals every day, and yet I used to crib if my mom cooked something I didn’t like! That video was extremely disheartening and was an eye-opener. As a result, the #EndHunger@WIN campaign was planned and initiated by me, my staff leader and my Innovation Team, with a hope to change our habits of wasting food, make us better people and also help the community, because everyone deserves the basic necessity that is food. I feel really lucky to have an amazing mentor, Ms. Teresa, who guided me and supported me, my backbone – my Innovation team Sreeradha, Marcus and Mohsin, who have always been enthusiastic, diligent and prompt in all their responsibilities throughout the working of this campaign. #EndHunger@WIN campaign is designed with many fun and innovative activities for the entire week that will help us value the food we get in our daily lives. Through our small deeds we can make sure that no one ever sleeps hungry again.
