The Winchester School Jebel Ali

Greetings Winchester Family!
From the Editor’s Desk
It’s with great joy that I present this very special edition of WIN Times to you!
The academic session 2023-2024 was a milestone one as our Winchester completed 20 years –a legacy of enrichment, empowerment, and excellence. I feel thrilled that of those 20 years, I have been a part of the Winchester family for 14 years. I still feel the same joy when I enter the Winchester gates as I did as an FS1 student. I’m so proud of my school – its culture of excellence, growth mindset, resilience, and the ethos of empathy, kindness, and care. I’m confident that every WIN community member feels the same pride in our wonderful school.
This issue is a tribute to the Winchester brilliance. You will find it different than our usual editions. The endeavour was to encompass different areas, opportunities, and achievements of our school. Of course, what we have included is but the proverbial tip of the iceberg. If we were to make an attempt to include all the accomplishments of the Winchester family, we’d be looking at a thick, alphabetically arranged encyclopedia!
I’m very grateful to all our lovely mentors and teachers who have contributed to this issue, as well as the parents and students who have shared their experiences and wishes. Like always, I take this opportunity to say a heartfelt thank you to our esteemed Principal, Ms. Meenakshi Dahiya, whose continuous motivation and support helps us weave the pages of WIN Times.
Wishing our beloved school many years and decades of continued growth and excellence. We’ll see you in the new academic year with a more exciting, enriching, and innovative reading experience!
Warm regards,
Mishal Faraz Founder, Editor-in-Chief, and Graphic Designer

As Winchester turns 20, memories of the past 11 years here and the admirable things I’ve learned along the way come to mind. As I near the end of my Winchester journey, I feel proud to look back on the incredible teachers that I have been blessed with. Their help in my academic life has been paramount. In more ways than I can count, but to name a major one, it would be helping me choose my career path. Winchester plays a huge part in my present time, and I'm sure it will continue to play as big of a role even after I graduate. So, as Winchester turns 20, I wish to watch it turn 30 and 50 as well. I wish to watch it reach new heights and achievements, just as it has watched over me.

Your thoughts on Win's 20th anniversary
It's genuinely hard to wrap my mind around the fact that the school I spent 13 years in is celebrating it's 20th anniversary. The amount of lifelong friendships and memories I have made throughout my years in Winchester have stuck with me for so long. Each and every student's time and presence adds something to the rich history of Winchester, and it'll only grow stronger as the years go on.
Your favourite memories
National days were super fun. Performing in the talent shows and everyone being in their cultural clothes was always amazing to see. Above all, I think my fondest memories were just from spending everyday in the sixth form with my friends. Even though it may seem mundane, those times were probably the most memorable to me.
Any message you'd like to give to the students
After you graduate from school you will go to lots of new places, meet lots of new people, and experience many new things, but you'll never forget your time in school. The memories last for a lifetime so try to make the most of it!

For the last 65 years, GEMS Education has been putting ‘Family First’ at the heart of its teaching. In February 2024, plans were announced to incorporate this core principle in a new movement for global change while supporting the UAE Leadership’s agenda for social change. This movement for change encourages GEMS families to spend more time together, exploring new frontiers of experience, and tapping into the wealth of knowledge and wise counsel within the home unit that too often goes undiscovered.
The Winchester School, Jebel Ali, has always believed in forging strong relationships with the parent community and putting family values at the core of everything they do. By hosting regular family engagement events, workshops, and open forums, the school ensures that parents are active participants in their children's educational journey.
In the next few pages, find beautiful glimpses of familial bliss and warmth of our lovely Winchester families - a wonderful article written by Jaimee Felysse Reyes of Year 8 paying tribute to her mother for being a pivotal figure in her life, and a picture gallery capturing a few WIN families.
A Heartfelt Thank You to Parents
Jaimee Felysse A. Reyes, Year 8
As we commemorate the 20th anniversary of our beloved school, it is with immense gratitude and joy that we extend our heartfelt appreciation not only to the dedicated students, teachers, and staff but also to the unsung heroes behind the scenes – the parents.
One shining example of parental dedication is embodied by the creative prowess of a mother, who goes above and beyond to ensure her children are not only academically thriving but also enjoying every aspect of their school experience. I am privileged to share the story of my own mother, a true artisan in the realm of costume creation.
My mother, like many others, embraces the challenges of parenthood with grace and resilience. What sets her apart is the remarkable skill and creativity she brings to the table, especially when it comes to crafting costumes for school events. Whether it’s a historical play, a science fair, or a cultural celebration, my mother stands ready with her sewing kit and a heart full of love.
What makes her truly exceptional is her ability to thrive under pressure. With deadlines looming and last-minute adjustments to be made, my mother remains unfazed. Her hands move swiftly, bringing life to her imaginative designs. It’s a sight to behold – the seamless fusion of creativity and dedication, resulting in costumes that not only meet the requirements but exceed expectations. The joy and pride we feel while donning her creations are immeasurable, creating lasting memories that extend far beyond the school walls.
In celebrating the 20th anniversary of our school, let us take a moment to recognize and express our deepest gratitude to parents like my mother. Their contributions may not always be visible on the surface, but they form the bedrock of a supportive and thriving school community. To the parents who sacrifice sleep for late-night costume crafting, who attend every school event with unwavering enthusiasm, and who provide a foundation of love and encouragement – we salute you.
Here are some of my mother's amazing creations for me and my siblings, Jainee Franzes Reyes and Jaicee Filippe Reyes.

Empowerment is at the core of our educational philosophy. It is about instilling confidence, fostering independence, and nurturing a sense of responsibility in our students. This year, we have seen numerous examples of empowerment in action. From student-led initiatives and innovative projects to exceptional performances in academics, sports, and the arts, our students have demonstrated that they are not just passive recipients of knowledge, but active participants in their own learning journeys.
One of the most inspiring aspects of my role has been witnessing students take ownership of their education. Whether through collaborative projects, leadership roles, or community service, they have shown that they have the power to make a difference. My message to the students - as you move forward, remember that true empowerment comes from believing in yourself and your ability to effect change. Mr. Gaber Sayah is the Head of Arabic and Islamic Education. Mr. Gaber believes that children of Winchester are wonderful and special; they are the lifeblood of the school. They are charismatic, charming young people with an appetite for learning and a thirst for knowledge. Mr. Gaber always goes above and beyond to ensure the most enriching experience for students. In this exclusive article, Mr. Gaber shines the spotlight on the stellar Arabic and Islamic Department of the school, and its highlights throughout the years.

The Winchester School, Jebel Ali, over the past twenty years, has been paying special attention to the Arabic language as it is the official language of the United Arab Emirates. Islamic education is also prioritized as it is the official religion of the state. With an objective to create an educated generation capable of linking the past to the present and cultivating a culture of thought, science, experiential learning, great attention is paid to reading. To achieve this objective, the school provides innumerable books and stories in Arabic along with virtual reading platforms like the Asafir platform and Kutubi.
The school encourages students to read by conducting competitions and providing reading time activities during the school day. Through Arabic and Islamic lessons students are motivated to read through various means and strategies that create a reading culture. Teachers use their best practices to meet the requirements of all students by using various teaching methods and educational strategies that meet all levels, in addition to many differentiated and personalized resources that include stories, videos, flashcards, websites, external books, and articles from local and international newspapers, dictionaries, and Tafseer books for Islamic classes.
Additionally, an educational YouTube channel has been created, through which useful videos for all grades, primary and secondary are shared.
Unflinchingly, the school provides appropriate support to its students during the school day through intervention lessons, and after school support classes for both Arabic and Islamic.

All the cultural and national days that commemorate and glorify the rich culture of UAE are celebrated and becomes an arena for interaction, cultural growth and tolerance. Students participate in the UAE National Day, Martyr’s Day, and varied interactive activities like student-led Arabic assemblies, celebrations of the Prophet’s birth, Hajj Simulation, and all other Islamic celebrations. Head of Innovation & Curriculum Enrichment
Head of Innovation & Curriculum Enrichment

Ms. Anna Francis is the Head of Innovation and Curriculum Enrichment at Winchester. A key focus of Ms. Anna's role includes providing a wide range of opportunities for students across all subjects and phases for their holistic development. Ms. Anna strongly believes that these opportunities encourage students to develop deeper concepts of learning, so that they become confident, global citizens, who remain open to lifelong learning.
It is with great pleasure that I am writing this article during the 20th year anniversary of The Winchester School, Jebel Ali. I have been a part of the Winchester family since 2005. I have been in several roles during these years. It is an absolute joy and blessing to have served all the stake holders of WIN family during this time.
In the role of Head of Innovation and Curriculum Enrichment, my key responsibilities include providing a wide range of opportunities for students across all subjects and phases for their holistic development. Our students get both academic and non-academic curricular enrichment experiences at national and international levels. These opportunities encourage our students to develop deeper concepts of learning, embed 21st century skills so that they become confident, global citizens.
Almost all students in all phases of school receives a minimum of 10 curriculum enrichment opportunities during an academic year for example - sports day, subject weeks, celebration of international days, participation in assemblies, leadership opportunities in class, STEAM activities and field trips.

Over these years we encourage our students to initiate and lead innovative projects, in order to support their peers, local and international community. Our trend in student-led initiatives is always in an upward direction. This year we have witnessed a 50% increase in student led initiatives compared to last year. 24% of our students participated in various international level competitions and programmes this year. A few examples of these are International Olympiad Foundation, World Scholars Cup, Duke of Edinburgh Awards, different Model United Nations conferences, UAE cricket team, UAE chess team, Blue Dot competition, etc.
Our students excelled in different sports activities. We have 2 students from Phase 3 in the UAE Cricket team, 1 in the UAE Chess team and one student from phase 4 in UAE Cricket team. 15% of our students from Phase 2-4 participate in national competitions.
14% of our students are a part of our school choir and music band. They have a wide range of opportunities within and outside school to show case their talent. This includes National Day Choir, Carols in Movenpick, Agimat Musical Play, Oscars Choir, Graduation Choir, Investiture Choir, Prize Day Choir, performances in the Music Lounge, etc.
Half of our students participated in national level competitions and programmes. We also collaborate with government departments, for example the Dubai Police, DEWA, DHA, Expo 2020, Dubai Cares, and COP 28. Our students are extremely empathetic and have initiated different campaigns to support countries effected by climate change, for instance, victims of floods in Pakistan and earthquakes in Syria. They have also supported the “Tarahum for Gaza” initiative by Dubai Government.

We are extremely proud of our students for their achievements and recognitions during all these events.
We strive to provide our students with ample opportunities to foster their innovative thinking skills. Innovation is also an ethos we try to uphold as an institution, and we apply this thinking in all areas including use of spaces, resources, timetabling, teaching and learning. We echo what Mr. William Edward, the founder of Boeing, once said “Our problems are so new and unusual that it behooves no one to dismiss any novel idea with a statement that “It can’t be done”.
As The Winchester School celebrates its 20th anniversary, I look back with pride on our accomplishments and look forward to a future filled with continued innovation and excellence. We are committed to providing our students with the knowledge, skills, and experiences they need to thrive in a rapidly changing world. We are grateful to our students, staff, and parents for their dedication and support, and we look forward to many more years of success together.

le Magnifique Département
Highlights from the French Department

The French team
At Winchester, the French department stands out for its proactive and extraordinary approach to language education. With a dynamic curriculum that goes beyond textbooks, the department immerses students in authentic cultural experiences. The passionate and dedicated faculty members are committed to fostering a love for the French language and culture, ensuring that students not only achieve academic excellence but also develop a deep appreciation for global perspectives. Through innovative teaching methods and a supportive learning environment, the French department consistently inspires students to excel and embrace the richness of the Francophone world.
Rue de la France

Rishit Singh, a Year 13 student, collaborated with the French department and founded the school's very own (and very first!) French community! This community aims at promoting French language and culture and celebrating foreign languages in general, striving to introduce students and parents alike to the vast world of foreign culture beyond just learning the language in our classrooms. In fact, it’s like a little piece of France in Winchester – which is what inspired the community’s name: Rue de la France (loosely translated, “French street/road”)!
The Rue de la France community organised a variety of activities as part French Week 2023. The week started off with a ceremonial parade, which was a sight to behold! Students, donned in French attire, marched along the corridors of the school waving the flag of France, displaying their love for the French culture.

The parade was followed by a series of engaging classroom activities and games, drawing inspiration from France’s academic and artistic history, including traditional French games such as werewolves, exquisite corpse, and French taboo, as well as educational activities like spelling bees, virtual tours, memory games, and situational roleplays.

We also hosted school-wide competitions on French poetry and literature, where students showcased their talent and enthusiasm for the French language by composing beautiful poems and writing captivating stories. Our most popular competition, the Classroom Decoration competition, took the year 7, 8, 9 and 10 corridors by storm, with every classroom door covered in French flags, banners, baguettes and even café stalls!

And finally, the highlight of French Week was the highly anticipated Talent and Fashion show! Including student participants from year 4 to year 12, this event saw our participants explore and showcase French fashion throughout history. The event was further enlivened by spectacular vocal and musical performances by student performers. The judges, our French teachers, were impressed by the quality of the submissions and had a tough time selecting the winners!

La Fête de la Francophonie

Adding another feather to the cap, Winchester's French team clinched first place in the competition “La Fête de la Francophonie”, organized by GEMS Modern Academy on the 15th and 16th of March, 2024. The competition was judged by a prestigious panel from L’Alliance Francaise and the Principal of Georges Pompidou School Dubai. This recognition highlights the hard work, dedication, and unique talents of the French department and its students.

The Winchester School choir started with 65 students in 2012. We are now more than 240 choir members from year 3 to year 13. We perform in school’s events like Investiture, Prize Day, National Day, Oscars, and Graduation. We did the musical plays Les Miserables in 2018 and Agimat in 2023. The pandemic did not stop our eagerness to perform. We did virtual choir performances, especially for online school events during those times. We get invited to perform for GEMS events like Nights at the Musical, Global Education Summit, GEMS Christmas evenings, and GEMS Awareness Day. Occasionally, the choir will sing in the reception for the guests, or if we just want to showcase what we have been practicing. We also perform or send members to participate in out of school events by different organizers like The Fridge, KHDA, and EXPO. We give students field trips or trainings to Dubai Opera. We are invited annually by different hotels to sing carols. We join choir competitions, in which we have won 1st place, like the KGS Music Festival, Millennium Melodies, and ChoirFest. Choir members are being managed by responsible student officers. They have assigned responsibilities and able to work cohesively managing a big choir. All members share the same passion to sing and perform. In the following pages, take a look through the choir's journey over the years!
