The other day I had a random thought. A quote that I used a lot during the pre-covid days idly made its way back into my conscious mind – "It's all in the eyes, I was once told. A smile isn't genuine unless eyes smile too. Words mean nothing unless eyes speak them too."

I have always loved people whose eyes "smile". And now, with the masks covering the faces, the only way we can really tell if a person is smiling is by seeing those crinkling eyes. I can imagine people smiling harder just to make their eyes smile. Indeed, it has been and is still a challenging time for all of us and yet in these moments we've found reasons to celebrate, we've carved niches of perseverance which future generations will speak of in glowing terms, and most importantly, we've reinstated the faith that there's no holding back the human spirit.

Mission Accomplished!

Hope Probe Reaches the Red Planet On the 9th of February, history was made when UAE became the first Arab nation and the 5th nation in the world to reach Mars after the Hope Probe successfully entered the orbit of Mars, the Red Planet. The country erupted into jubilant celebrations to mark this glorious occasion. Here are some facts about this 1350kg wonder which has brought pride and unlimited happiness to the entire Arab region.

The Mars Mission was announced by His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, on July 16, 2014.

The cost to build the Hope Probe was $200 million, which is the lowest in the world to build a space probe.

200 Emirati engineers worked to develop the Hope Probe.

The Hope Probe was launched on 20th July 2020 and entered the orbit of Mars on 9th February 2021 after travelling for 205 days.

The Hope Probe was named “Hope” or “Al-Amal” to send out a message of optimism to millions of Arabs across the globe and encourage them towards innovation.

The Hope Probe will collect one terabyte (1000GB) of new data about the Martian atmosphere, This data will be shared with more than 200 institutions worldwide for free.

Hope Probe was launched from Tanegashima Space Center near Minamitane, Japan.

A prototype of the Hope spacecraft was displayed at the Dubai Air Show in November 2017.

A whopping 15.5 million hours of work went into the making of the Hope Probe

I genuinely believe the Emirates Mars Mission (Hope Probe) activated the role of women as an essential partner in building the country’s future and as the main building block of society. Hope Probe set a remarkable standard for the inclusion of women, which challenged the global conventions on women’s participation and contribution in the space sector. Hope Probe’s science team compromised of 80% of women and it sets a great example for women and girls that their influence in scientific fields IS needed and appreciated. Hope Probe presents an aspiring vision for future space exploration and instils ambition within women and girls to follow their dreams.

The Emirates Mars Mission is the first undertaken by an Arab nation. It will help to understand climate and global weather, the duration of the mission being one Martian year. It is an honour for the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre which is responsible for the execution and supervision of the launch of Hope Probe. It is a privilege as UAE makes history with the launch of the "Hope" mission. Salutations to the foresight and vision of the leaders.

Conquering the Stars Winchester exceeds targets in TIMSS and PISA Assessments In 2014, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum launched the UAE National Agenda, which covered a wide range of areas affecting the quality of education and student achievement across the different phases.

Two of the major targets were concerned with the UAE ranking in PISA (Program for International Student Assessment) and in TIMSS (Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study).

We are proud to share the absolutely superlative performance of The Winchester School, Jebel Ali, in both these international assessments.

What is TIMSS?

What is PISA?

The International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement's (IEA) Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) is a series of international assessments of the mathematics and science knowledge of students around the world. TIMSS is one of the studies established by IEA aimed at allowing educational systems worldwide to compare students' educational achievement and learn from the experiences of others in designing effective education policy. TIMSS assesses Year 5 and Year 9 students.

The Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) is a worldwide study by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in member and nonmember nations intended to evaluate educational systems by measuring 15-year-old school pupils' scholastic performance on mathematics, science, and reading. It was first performed in 2000 and then repeated every three years. Its aim is to provide comparable data with a view to enabling countries to improve their education policies and outcomes. It measures problem solving and cognition.

TIMSS In both Year 5 and Year 9 Science, we have exceeded the average score of Singapore, the top performing country, as well as that of Dubai’s outstanding schools.

In Maths, we are at the 4th position in Year 9, and 5th position in Year 5 compared to the average scores of top performing countries worldwide, and ahead of the average scores of outstanding schools in Dubai.

PISA As compared to the OECD average, we have exceeded by 32 points in Science, 13 points in Maths, and 39 points in Reading.

In comparison with other private Dubai schools, we have exceeded by 21 points in Science, 1 point in Maths, and 25 points in Reading.

WIN Times is proud to introduce our latest columnist, Mr. Abobakr Mohammed. Mr. Abobakr teaches Arabic and Islamic Studies, and is immensely loved and respected by his students for the sheer dedication he pours into each and every lesson of his. Mr. Abobakr believes that Islamic Education is not a subject, rather, it is a way of life, and his most important objective is that his students become good human beings, guided by values of humanity. In this very special column, Mr. Abobakr will talk of contemporary events and topics in light of Islamic teachings.

We are very excited to have Mr. Abobakr on board, and look forward to all the wonderful inspiration we will gain from his writings in the months to come.

Mr. Abobakr seeks inspiration from this saying of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH): “Whoever introduces a good practice in Islam, there is for him its reward and the reward of those who act upon it after him without anything being diminished from their rewards.”

Islam and Seeking Knowledge I asked one of my friends about the first Ayah (Quranic verse) revealed to the Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) and he was surprised knowing that the first Ayah was the following:

– Surah Al-'Alaq (96:1-5) The first Ayah was about reading and seeking knowledge at a time where the majority of the Arabs could not read nor write. They were fond of war for any reason, yet when Islam appeared, it really changed not only the Arabian Peninsula but also the face of the universe for the better.

Allah says, “Say, ‘Are those who know equal to those who do not know?’ Only they will remember [who are] people of .”

– (Az-Zumar: 9).

So, Islam encourages and gives great importance to seek knowledge. It is considered Seeking knowledge with the intention of benefiting oneself and the people is rewarded by Allah and it’s also regarded to be a path to paradise.

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:

"Whoever takes a path upon which to obtain knowledge, Allah makes the path to

easy for

him."

Allah Almighty commanded his prophet to increase in knowledge and He did not command him, the Almighty, to ask for more except in knowledge which is a clear indication of the virtue of knowledge.

Allah (SWT) says in the Holy Qur’an: “And say: My Lord, increase me in ."

– (Qur’an 20:114)

Sheikh Zayed: Protector of the Environment Mir Faraz, Year 6H We all know that our Earth is a unique planet – the only one we know of that can sustain life. With the rise in population, the onus on this fragile planet is growing day by day. Global warming, deforestation, rising sea levels, ozone layer depletion are words which we read everywhere- and it’s good that we do! The more awareness spread about safeguarding the planet, the better.

But did you know there once lived an extraordinary man who talked of sustainability long before this word was even known to most people? He talked of environmental protection almost 50 years ago when not many could fathom that the environment needed any extra attention!

That great man was none other than our exemplary His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the first President of the United Arab Emirates and the Father of the Nation.

As His Highness Sheikh Zayed dreamt of taking the country from strength to strength, he also aimed to imbibe the principles of sustainability into all developments in the country.

He was a supporter of an ecosystem which was healthy and green and revelled in preserving its natural resources. The great visionary that he was, Sheikh Zayed understood that the environment is inherently susceptible to vulnerabilities if not taken care of in a responsible way. He believed that the protection of the environment is a precursor to a sustainable, balanced, and inclusive growth.

Forever an advocate of lush green spaces, Sheikh Zayed saw to it that the masterplan of Abu Dhabi had meticulously planned open spaces and plantations. His Highness ensured that the country’s rich coastal mangrove trees were preserved and given the optimum conditions to thrive. Fast forward to this day, the UAE now has the largest mangroves in this region. Mangrove trees prevent coastline erosion caused by ocean waves and reduce carbon emissions considerably.

Did You Know?

In his life time, Sheikh Zayed is credited to be the driving force behind the plantation of 150

million trees! These trees helped combat desertification to a large extent and acted as aids to keep the city temperature lower by creating barriers against the hot desert winds.

Sheikh Zayed saved the Arabian Oryx from extinction!

All of us know that the Arabian Oryx is the national animal of the UAE. Here’s an amazing fact – by 1970, the Arabian Oryx was declared to be on the brink of extinction. It was His Highness Sheikh Zayed who took upon the challenge to preserve the species. He started a conservation program at Sir Bani Yas Island to protect these animals. Today Sir Bani Yas Island is home to the largest number of Arabian Oryx population in the entire world.

Sheikh Zayed’s unwavering passion for the environment brought him the prestigious laurel of being the first head of state to be the recipient of the Panda Award from the World-Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).

The UAE continues to follow the footsteps of the beloved Baba Zayed. The Masdar City in Abu Dhabi is a glowing tribute to Sheikh Zayed’s commitment towards the environment. This development is a major milestone of green architecture and sustainable development which relies completely on renewable energy sources.

Also, various government agencies have been set up spanning the entire country to protect the environment.

To see nature thriving and a healthy planet was one of the goals of His Highness Sheikh Zayed.

As we celebrate the legacy of one of the greatest leaders that this world has witnessed, let us all make a promise to ourselves to always work in favour of this beautiful planet- to love, respect and nurture it just as our Baba Zayed envisioned. His Highness’s own words sum it up the best – “On land and in the sea, our forefathers lived and survived in this environment. They were able to do so only because they recognized the need to conserve it, to take from it only what they needed to live and to preserve it for succeeding generations.”

I Kept Standing There Ms. Kamaljit Kapur This poignantly beautiful poem written

by Ms. Kamal Kapur, parent of Arjun Kapur, Year 13, talks about how life goes through different stages, and how mothers experience a range of emotions as they see their children grow up.

I opened the door and showed him his room.

His transition from sleeping in my room to his room.

He clasped my hands as if never to leave me.

I started negotiating with him.

Telling him that he is no more a baby now.

Now that he is a big boy, he must have his own room I kept standing there, convincing him to welcome his new space.

He never closed his door.

He wanted to see the outside world from his room.

He did not want to feel isolated.

He had his own fears & his own demons.

He would invite me and share his space with me.

I kept standing there, watching him playing and him nudging me to a part of his play.

I asked him to close the door, as he was growing up.

Close the door when he is coming out of shower.

Close the door, when he is changing his clothes.

He would quickly finish his rituals and open the door.

He would plan the family movie nights in his room with all the popcorn and tent accessories in his room.

All planned very methodically and meticulously.

I kept standing there watching his innocent acts He started closing the door on his own.

He would be all quite if I opened the door.

He would do polite talks and walk towards me.

In between the conversation he would slowly slowly start the door closing process.

I kept standing there wondering since when he started having these private moments.

His door was always closed.

He did not want to view the world from his room.

He did not have any fears or hidden demons.

He stopped inviting me to his room.

There were no planned family activities in his room.

The door came between us.

Between us forever.

I kept standing there, with the door closed on my face.

Random Acts of Kindness to Make the Heart Smile!

Toshith Bhaumik, Year 10 In recent months, there’s been a lot of uncertainty and people have felt stressed and worried. But even during these times, it’s been incredible to see families, friends and communities come together and help one another with complete optimism, joy, and strength.

Random acts of kindness are what brings us humans together through the power of goodwill and it is definitely what is needed for us to pull through tough situations, supporting and inspiring the community, and increasing wellbeing.

Imagine you are an old, senior citizen who has to go and take grocery every week on your own because of late deliveries due to

COVID. Carrying all that heavy load has to be tiring, and stressful. Suddenly, someone offers you help in carrying your grocery for you, how do you feel? Great right? With a huge smile and feeling happy that a person showed compassion towards you? This is what a random act of kindness can do, by turning a gloomy day into a bright one for someone.

Now it may seem really hard to carry out random acts of kindness, however, the simplest of gestures as small as giving a stranger a flower is portraying kindness and completely uplifts a persons’ day.

Simple, small gestures of kindness can go a long way and make a big difference.

Here are some wonderful acts of kindness you can be doing to help others during these challenging times.

Help out labourers who are affected due to COVID As a community, we should be supporting and helping every single person in the society specially when they face troubles. The easiest thing to do is preparing home-cooked meals with care and giving them to labourers and security guards facing challenges. This would boost their mood a lot sensing support from their surroundings.

Donate clothes for the needy With COVID, several labourers, construction workers have lost their jobs and can’t afford new clothes. Simply donating your clothes that won’t fit you can go a long way in helping someone that can make great use of it and appreciate it.

Make a phone call Several individuals all around the world are in total lockdown, quarantine and barely have any physical interaction. Reach out and call a friend, family member or neighbour who maybe experiencing loneliness or self-isolation.

Offer support to vulnerable relatives In case you sense that your neighbour or close relative is vulnerable during these times, you can offer support by helping them doing simple tasks such as their grocery or getting them meals.

Catch up with your friends As you barely go to school and hence have limited interactions. You can easily link up with your friends over social media and catch up on how the day went or hoe they are feeling. It truly boosts the mental well-being of someone as they are being cared for.

These are just a few simple ideas to help you spread kindness and feel more positive, but you can do so much more and go beyond just these simple ideas. If you bring upon a smile on a person’s face, the satisfaction you receive brings an even wider smile on you. So, go and spread kindness and brighten the day of someone going through a dark and lonely time.

Artificial Intelligence Bane or Boon?

Aryaman Chakravorty, Year 7B WHAT IS A.I.?

AI is an artificial human intelligence in machines that are programmed to think like humans and imitate our actions.

People believe Artificial Intelligence will revolutionize the future, and it certainly will, but there are two ways we can look at it.

A.I. CAN HAVE A GREAT IMPACT AI is also really helpful in tasks which are too dangerous or impossible for humans, like space exploration or research way below the sea. AI is going to be great when it comes to transportation as well. AI can make accurate decisions if programmed well and they don’t get tired, while humans need rest.

BUT IT’S GOING TO BE TOUGH AI can help, but it’ll be tough if it starts taking over jobs of factory workers, checkout cashiers, etc. Jobs will become limited and people will face poverty. #EndHunger@WIN Arya Kaji, Year 6, Head of Innovation

Arya Kaji is in Year 6, and is the Head of Innovation for Primary. Along with her mentor, Ms. Teresa, and her Innovation Coordinators, Sreeradha, Marcus, and Mohsin, she initiated a very fruitful campaign called #EndHunger@WIN . In this insightful article, Arya talks about her inspiration behind the campaign and how, through a very interesting range of activities, the Primary Innovation Team has brought together the entire school community towards a good cause.

How is world hunger still such a major problem? The main cause of hunger worldwide is poverty. Millions of people around the world are simply too poor to be able to buy food. They also lack the resources to grow their own food, such as arable land and the means to harvest, process, and store food. Today, nearly 2.5 billion people, almost one-third of the world's population, have some level of hunger, due to lacking the resources to purchase food, while 800,000 people go entire days without eating at least once.

When I got appointed as Head of Innovation for Primary, I knew that I wanted to bring a change to the society in some way, but didn’t have a clear idea what that would be. The thought of a food campaign came to my mind while watching a video of people struggling and dying out of hunger. I realized that hunger is one of the worst things anyone could go through. I remembered my mom making me understand the importance of food, giving me examples of the homeless and poor people who starve in under-developed countries. How lucky I was to get meals every day, and yet I used to crib if my mom cooked something I didn’t like! That video was extremely disheartening and was an eye-opener. As a result, the #EndHunger@WIN campaign was planned and initiated by me, my staff leader and my Innovation Team, with a hope to change our habits of wasting food, make us better people and also help the community, because everyone deserves the basic necessity that is food. I feel really lucky to have an amazing mentor, Ms. Teresa, who guided me and supported me, my backbone – my Innovation team Sreeradha, Marcus and Mohsin, who have always been enthusiastic, diligent and prompt in all their responsibilities throughout the working of this campaign. #EndHunger@WIN campaign is designed with many fun and innovative activities for the entire week that will help us value the food we get in our daily lives.

Through our small deeds we can make sure that no one ever sleeps hungry again.

All About Books Beware! Space Junk Geronimo Stilton His name is Geronimo Stiltonix and he is the captain of the Mousestar 1 which is the biggest and the most fabumouse spaceship in the whole galaxy. He had an inspection of his spaceship but even though it happens twice a year he still doesn’t have any idea about it. He has his inspections with Sally De Wrench. After the inspection, Geronimo’s cousin Trap, asked him to have dinner with him. Suddenly small and large sized particles of trash were hitting their spaceship at a high speed. Geronimo went out of the spaceship and started to collect the trash using the trash collector. He tracks down where all the trash is coming from. When he arrives, there is a war going on, but thankfully he saves everyone, stops the war, and saves the galaxy from being trashed.

The scene which I liked is the control room scene. Sally De Wrench was happy to come with Geronimo to help him figure out what kind of objects they were and where did they from. They hopped in an Astrotaxi and zoomed toward the command center and when they stepped into the room everyone turned and looked at them. Grandfather William looked angrier than a cosmocat with space fleas.

Grandfather William asked “What took you so long? Don’t tell me that you were at some place having fun and we are here

having a moment of crisis. We have never dealt with anything like this before, so we don’t know how to deal with it.” He said some other mean things to Geronimo, but before he could say anything else, Sally De Wrench intervened. She talked some sense in his grandfather.

I liked this book because it has many funny parts and it is a book about space mice being attacked by piles of trash so they have to go find where it is coming from and put an end to it before the galaxy is all trashed, and they need to fight against rebel robots before taking over planet Cleanix. Also, people who like to know about space would love reading this book as it has informative illustrations.

The author writes in a funny and an adventurous way that will make you laugh very hard. She makes up new adjectives like “fabumouse”. I chose this book because the title makes you want to read it and my school library is filled with these books, and of course, everyone loves to read them. The title is appropriate because chunks of junk started hitting their spaceship. I would like the author to add a little more to the ending of the story. I think it is appropriate for 6-13-year-olds to read this book.

Her second young adult novel, On the Come Up, was released on February 25, 2019.A thrilling and very intricate commentary on the social issues that minorities face in today’s society. It is narrated from the perspective of Starr Carter, a girl whose life is shaken to the core because she watched her childhood friend die at the hands of a racist policeman. A thrilling and heartfelt read I recommend to everyone.

Everything mentioned above, coupled with the mystery, suspense and crime themes of the Sherlock Holmes novels, are sure to make a complicated, brain-racking and time-consuming experience.

Wonder, R.J. Palacio Wonder is about a young boy, August Pullman, who contains a congenital facial abnormality who deals with a variety of reactions to his unusual appearance. Some kids use hateful language, and a few people suggest that Auggie is mentally deficient. However, goodness wins out, and readers should find it inspiring and uplifting. Author R.J. Palacio writes the book in multiple voices – Auggie's, a number of his friends', his sister's – and also the different points of view are mostly very wellrealized and show the inner feelings of the various characters. Wonder

by RJ Palacio was astonishing! This book can teach many different lessons. The one that stood out to me was not to judge by the way someone looked but by the inner character of that person.

When Breath Becomes Air, Paul Kalanithi This memoir is so incredibly and thoughtfully written that it will be etched in your mind forever. The reader is forced to think about ‘what makes life worth living’ and the importance of the little time a person has left when he is on the brink of death as Paul Kalanithi takes us on a wonderful, passionate and moving journey which transitions from being a medical student to a highly competent neurosurgeon-neuroscientist to a patient diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer. This unexpected transition reflects very accurately on the unpredictability of life, the evaporation of a future you had anticipated and the inevitability of death. Though Paul Kalanithi died when he was just thirty-six, he left a lasting impression on this world with his book that would serve as a universal donor. You become so immersed in this book that it seems incredulous that this incredible man has left this world.

Goals for life sdg #4: QUALITY EDUCATION FOR ALL The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as the Global Goals, were adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015 as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity by 2030.

The 17 SDGs are integrated—that is, they recognize that action in one area will affect outcomes in others, and that development must balance social, economic and environmental sustainability.

THIS MONTH’S SPOTLIGHT What is SDG 4 all about?

The objective of SDG 4, as stated by the United Nations is to “ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.”

SDG 4 sees education as absolutely imperative for ensuring sustainable development and world peace. Goal 4 believes that education is not a privilege, but a human right. Education connects all the other goals, as being educated helps the underprivileged have access to equal opportunities, which help them break out of the vicious cycle of poverty. It can undoubtedly be said that SDG 4 is possibly the most crucial Sustainable Development Goal.

Effect of COVID-19 on the Attainment of SDG 4 Before COVID-19, it was already estimated that there would still be 200 million children out of school by 2030. Needless to say, COVID-19 has exacerbated the problem. 90% of all students in the world are out of school as a result of lockdowns and school closures, and remote learning remains out of reach for 500 million students. Furthermore, only 65% of schools have adequate basic handwashing facilities, something which is critical for COVID-19 prevention. This is why SDG 4 needs to be focused on all the more.

Winchester’s Contribution to SDG 4 In December 2019, The Winchester School raised Dh132,000 to support the education programmes for underprivileged children in rural Malawi. The initiative, in association with Dubai Cares, is part of the ‘Adopt a School’ programme targeting children in developing countries and providing them with primary education.

“Goals for Life” by Mishal and Mir Faraz is a column dedicated to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, which are actually a blueprint to an inclusive and sustainable planet. Though a lot of information is available on various platforms about the SDGs, it is imperative that they are propagated through as many mediums as possible and given visibility and a voice that reaches far and wide. This column endeavours to elaborate on a different SDG every month and encourage all readers to be passionate changemakers.

The Green Guide There are more masks than jellyfish in the ocean!

Gareth Andrade is an 11-year-old student in Year 7 at The Winchester School who advocates for UN Sustainable Development Goal #14: Life Below Water. Since he was a little boy, he has been passionate about conserving sea animals, volunteering towards beach cleanups, being a conscious ecowarrior at home, at school and everywhere he goes.

He and his brother launched the “Balloons Blow Don’t Let Them Go” campaign in Dubai, in November 2018, and since then he has collected thousands of pledges.

Discarded disposable masks may risk spreading coronavirus to waste collectors, litter pickers or members of the public who first come across the litter. It is made of plastic, and plastics break down into smaller pieces over time, but they do not biodegrade.

Even worse, it’s harming animals, birds, and sea creatures!

Given the number of people still choosing a disposable mask rather than a reusable one, I am concerned about the profound impact on our environment. According to a study published in Environmental Science and Technology journal, an estimated 194 billion disposable masks and gloves are being used globally every month because of the coronavirus pandemic.

There is a surge in face masks and gloves littering the UAE beaches. My family and friends frequently drive to various emirates to spend some time on the beaches, and we found loads of single use plastic masks, amongst other rubbish, thus ended up cleaning the beach and disposing of the garbage so that it doesn’t pollute the oceans. This motivated our family to educate and support individuals and organizations to bring about behavior change responsibility.

It is very often that I hear from my classmates that they can’t draw, and they struggle with art projects.

My name is Martin Georgiev and I have been a student at The Winchester School for the past seven years.

Currently I am in 9C. Martin’s Art Space aims to enable students to experiment and try new ideas, thus giving their creativity a chance to bloom and to encourage the process and the experience of thinking and enhancing one’s personality. Basketball keeps us healthy. It is important for us to play a team sport like this because when we play together because we are all responsible for our wins and losses. It also helps in other ways. For example: it boosts our life span, makes our bones stronger and gives us better coordination skills.

It also makes us taller. Additionally, it lowers stress, boosts your immune system, develops mental health, and helps make quick decisions. In my opinion, it is a fun sport.

Then there’s football. Football is a great sport enjoyed globally by many fans. It is fun and easy to play and has simple rules. It improves muscle and bone strength.

It also improves cardiovascular health. If you play soccer you will realize that it makes you happier and helps against depression and anger, even if you lose a game. It’s so fun that it makes you happy just by playing. It also helps you make new friends!

Around the World Journey to Switzerland

Life has changed enormously. These days entire nations have been advised to stay at home and travelling is significantly restricted. But this fact doesn’t stop us from travelling the world and discovering countries while reading!

It is February, one of the coldest months of the year. It is winter in the Northern hemisphere. That brings skiing, snowboarding, snowmen and enjoying some nice warm hot chocolate, while being wrapped in a cozy blanket and watching the beauty of falling snowflakes.

Let me take you on a journey to a country with amazing towering mountains that are covered in snow no matter what the season, heaps of crystal-clear lakes, and beautiful, little villages. Let’s go to a country famous for its signature chocolate bar made with honey and almond nougat – Toblerone, great skiing experiences in the Alps, and magical train rides. Let’s go to Switzerland.

Switzerland is a landlocked country (a country that does not have territory connected to an ocean) in central Europe.

The north is bordered by Germany, the east

by Austria and a bit of Liechtenstein, the south by Italy and the west by France. The official name of Switzerland is Confoederatio Helvetica meaning Swiss Confederation in Latin. This is the reason why Switzerland’s abbreviation is CH. The Swiss Confederation consists of 26 cantons or states.

The flag of Switzerland displays a white cross in the centre of a square red field. And since the flag is perfectly symmetrical, the Swiss flag is the only national flag in the world that cannot be hoisted the wrong way.

An intriguing fact is that there is even a sport discipline dedicated to the Swiss flag called: Fahnenschwingen.

This is flag tossing, dating back to medieval times. The discipline requires athletes to master 99 different twists and tosses – both with their right and left hands.

Switzerland is a small and mountainous country.

It’s geographical landscape can be divided into three different regions: the Jura mountains (a limestone range that makes up 12% of the surface area of the country), the Plateau (partly flat area that takes 30% of the country’s area and where two-thirds of the country’s population live), and the Alps – the incredibly famous part of Switzerland.

The Swiss Alps are the highest mountains in Europe and 48 of them are over 4000m. The most famous peak is the Matterhorn, which is 4.478 m. tall, but the highest peak is Dufourspitze which stands at 4.634 m and lies in the Monte Rosa massif.

The Matterhorn – the triangular shaped peak commonly believed to have given Theodor Tobler his inspiration for the shape of Toblerone.

It is interesting to know that only 15% of the Alps actually lie within Switzerland, even though Switzerland is the country that people most associate with the Alps. Although Switzerland is most famous for its Alpine landscape, and there might not be any seas, the country is also home to many stunning lakes.

In fact, Switzerland has more than 1500 lakes with many different shapes and sizes; from massive water bodies that span across the country to tiny ones sitting in charming, small villages. Swiss lakes are described by their strikingly blue water and natural beauty. The largest lake in the country is Lake Geneva, which is shared with France.

Switzerland is also the home of the longest glacier in Europe. The Aletsch Glacier is about 23km. With an unbelievable 11 billion tons of ice, the Aletsch Glacier is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The capital city of Switzerland is Bern.

However, the largest city is Zurich, (right) which is consistently ranked in the Top 10 Most Livable Cities in the World.

The most widely spoken language is Swiss German and the smallest national language is Romansh. Most people can understand or speak English, but older people rarely speak English and communicate in the regional language or dialect.

The influence of Germany, France and Italy in the Swiss cuisine is understandable too. Each region developed its own gastronomy according to the difference of climate and languages but generally the traditional Swiss cuisine include a great selection of bread, dairy products, and a wonderful variety of the world-famous Swiss cheese. Well–known Swiss dishes include raclette and fondue (molten cheese eaten with bread or potatoes), rosti (fried grated potatoes), muesli (an oatmeal breakfast dish) and Zurcher Geschnetzeltes (veal and mushrooms on a creamy sauce).

Swiss chocolate is famous across the globe for a good reason – the country has a long history of excellence in this field.

Chocolate has been made in Switzerland since the 17th century, but chocolate production became an international phenomenon in Switzerland at the end of the 19th century.

The country is not only the largest producer of high- quality chocolate in the world – approximately 180,000 kg per year – Swiss people consume the most chocolate per capita in the world too – about 11 kg per person for a year.

Despite the fact that Swiss people rank first in the consumption of chocolate, according to the World Health Organization, Switzerland is the least obese European country; maybe because sports play an important role in the Swiss people’s lives. Most of the people have a regular sport activity and one in four is an active member of a sports club. Because of the large mountain range of the country, skiing, snowboarding, and mountaineering are the most common sports in Switzerland, but football and ice hockey are extremely popular too. Along with the popular sports, Swiss people play some traditional sports too, including Swiss–style wrestling (Schwingen), Hornussen – a kind of Alpine baseball – and Steinstossen – throwing a heavy stone as far as possible.

The customs in Switzerland are diverse as the Swiss themselves. Originating from different cultures and having four different languages makes the festivals they celebrate vivid and spectacular.

Swiss festivals range from bright folk spectacles to medieval celebrations and sophisticated art entertainment.

The School Economist No Country Will Survive Deglobalization After the Pandemic

The post-pandemic world economy seems likely to be a far less globalised economy, with political leaders and publics rejecting openness in a manner unlike anything seen since the tariff wars and competitive devaluations of the 1930s. And the by-product will be not just slower growth, but a significant fall in national incomes for all but perhaps the largest and most diversified economies.

In his prescient 2001 book The End of Globalization, the Princeton economic historian Harold James showed how an earlier era of global economic and financial integration collapsed under the pressures of unexpected events during the Great Depression of the 1930s, culminating in World War II.

WHEELS UNDER DEGLOBALISATION Today, the COVID-19 pandemic appears to be accelerating another withdrawal from globalisation.

The current retreat began with Donald Trump’s victory in the 2016 US presidential election, which led to tariff wars between the United States and China.

The pandemic will likely have an even larger negative long-term impact on trade, partly because governments increasingly recognise that they need to regard public-health capacity as a nationalsecurity imperative. The risk today of a debilitating 1930s-style overshoot in deglobalisation is massive, particularly if the US-China relationship continues to fray. And it is folly to think that a chaotic, crisis-driven retreat from globalisation will not introduce more — and vastly more serious — problems.

Even the US, with its highly diversified economy, world-leading technology, and strong naturalresource base, could suffer a significant decline in real GDP as a result of deglobalisation. For smaller economies and developing countries that are unable to reach critical mass in many sectors and often lack natural resources, a breakdown in trade would reverse many decades of growth.

And that is before considering the long-lasting impact of social-distancing and quarantine measures.

The long-running trade war between China and the US has seen them swap tariffs on goods worth hundreds of billions of dollars. The late economist Alberto Alesina, a towering figure in the field of political economy, argued that for a well-governed country in the age of globalisation, small can be beautiful.

PERILS OF GLOBALISATION True, globalisation has fuelled economic inequalities among the approximately one billion people who live in advanced economies. Trade competition has hammered low-wage workers in some sectors, even while making goods less expensive for everyone. Financial globalisation has arguably had an even larger effect by increasing the profits of multinational corporations and offering new high-return foreign-investment instruments for the wealthy, especially since 1980.

In his 2014 bestseller Capital in the Twenty-First Century, Thomas Piketty cited rising income and wealth inequalities as evidence that capitalism has failed. But whom has it failed? Outside of the advanced economies — where 86 per cent of the world’s population lives — global capitalism has lifted billions of people out of desperate poverty.

Surely, therefore, an overshoot in deglobalisation risks hurting far more people than it helps. But building resilience does not mean tearing down the entire system and starting over again.

BENEFITS OUTWEIGH THE PITFALLS The US has more to lose from deglobalisation than some of its politicians, on both the right and the left, seem to realise. For starters, the global trading system is part of a compact whereby the US gets to be the hegemon in a world where most countries, including China, have a stake in making the international order work. Aside from its political ramifications, deglobalisation also poses economic risks to America.

In particular, many of the benign factors that today allow the US government and American corporations to borrow vastly more than any other country are likely tied to the dollar’s role at the centre of the system. And a wide array of economic models show that as tariffs and trade frictions increase, financial globalisation decreases at least proportionately.

This not only implies a sharp fall in both multinationals’ profits and stock-market wealth — which is probably fine with some — but also could mean a significant drop in foreign demand for US debt. That would hardly be ideal at a time when the US needs to borrow massively in order to preserve social, economic, and political stability.

Needless to say, there are other battles ahead requiring international cooperation, not least climate change. It will be even harder to motivate developing economies to rein in their carbon dioxide emissions if a global trade collapse undercuts the single strongest common incentive that countries have to maintain global peace and prosperity.

Last but not least, although COVID-19 has so far hit Europe and the US harder than it has lower-income countries, there is still a huge risk of a humanitarian tragedy in Africa and other poorer regions. Is now really the right time to undercut these countries’ ability to fend for themselves?

Even if the US turns a blind eye to deglobalization’s effects on the rest of the world, it should remember that the current abundant demand for dollar assets depends heavily on the vast trade and financial system that some American politicians aim to shrink. If deglobalisation goes too far, no country will be spared.

Aryaman Chakravorty from Year 7 has been passionate about sports ever since he can remember. He likes playing soccer because it is a team game. He started gaining interest in the game when he was a little boy. He used to watch soccer with his dad and he started playing Soccer when he was 3 years old. The game of soccer taught him teamwork and dedication to train/practice. He loves watching different Soccer Leagues like English Premier League, La Liga, French League and many more. His personal favourite teams are Barcelona, Arsenal and Paris Saint-German.

Tennis is a sport played in singles or in doubles. Tennis was invented in France in the 11th century. It was called “the game of the palm”. As the name suggests, it was played with hands, but was modified by England in the 19th century, since when it has been played with a racket. Tennis comes from the French word “Tenez” which means hold, receive, or take.

The man ranked 1st in the world is Novak Djokovic from Serbia, and followed by him is Rafael Nadal from Spain. The woman ranked 1st in the world is Ashleigh Barty from Australia, followed by Simona Halep from Romania. One of the all-time famous tennis players is Roger Federer. He is a Swiss professional who has 103 wins and 20 Grand Slam titles.

There are different types of Tennis Tournaments but Wimbledon, US Open, Australian Open, and French Open are the four major tournaments. Winning all four Tournaments is called a GRAND SLAM. For playing tennis, it is mandatory to have tennis balls, footwear, rackets, towels, and a water bottle.

Also, you obviously need to have a proper tennis court to play in. There are different types of tennis court surfaces like grass, clay, and synthetic.

• Before tennis balls were yellow, they used to be white. Yellow tennis balls weren’t used until 1986, when officials decided that yellow tennis balls would be easier for the spectators to see on TV. • On average, a tennis player runs 3 miles in one game!

• Venus and Serena Williams were the first ever set of sisters to win Olympic gold medals in tennis.

• Racket vs Racquet – even though “racket” is typically the correct spelling, “racquet” is more commonly used.

artwork by Zenil, 5H Forever true to the commitment and quest to offer an invigorating and stimulating learning experience to all learners, an art exhibition was organized, and students were encouraged to share their aesthetic pieces with their peers. The artworks which were submitted truly showcased the sheer brilliance and creative genius of Winchester students. The colours, concepts, attention to detail and thought behind each art piece was a delight. Students shared their art pieces in the classroom while explaining the inspiration that went into making them. After each presentation, the teachers and peers gave their feedback and expressed appreciation. What really stood out was how each art piece was interpreted by students, thereby showing their astute observation and analytical skills.

It is said that art has the role in education of helping children become like themselves, instead of more like everyone else – the art exhibition exemplified this perfectly.

Nomads Hamda Rihan, Year 6G One day, Mister Arnold was teaching a lesson, and things were going as normally as ever. He was explaining the story of mankind to his pupils. He told them that, in the beginning, men were nomads; that they never stayed in the same place for very long. Instead, they would travel about, here and there, in search of food, wherever it was to be found. And when the food ran out, they would move off somewhere else.

He taught them about the invention of farming and keeping animals. This was an important discovery, because by learning to cultivate land and care for animals, mankind would always have food readily available. It also meant that people could remain living in one place, and this made it easier to set about tasks that would take a long while to complete, like building towns, cities, and all that were in them. All the children were listening, spellbound by this story, until Lucy jumped up: "And if that was so important, and improved everything so much, why are we nomads all over again, Mister Arnold?"

Mister Arnold didn't know what to say.

Lucy was a very intelligent girl. He knew that she lived with her parents in a house, so she must know that her families were not nomads; so what did she mean?

"We have all become nomads again," continued Lucy, “The other day, outside the city, they were cutting the forest down.

A while ago a fisherman told me how they

fish. It's the same with everyone: when there's no more forest left the foresters go elsewhere, and when the fish run out the fishermen move on. That's what the nomads did, isn't it?"

The teacher nodded, thoughtfully. Really, Lucy was right. Mankind had turned into nomads. Instead of looking after the land in a way that we could be sure it would keep supplying our needs, we kept exploiting it until the land was bare and barren. And then off we would go to the next place! The class spent the rest of the afternoon talking about what they could do to demonstrate how to be more civilized...

The next day everyone attended class wearing a green t-shirt, with a message that said ,"I Am Not A Nomad!"

And, from then on, they set about showing that indeed they were not. Every time they knew they needed something, they made sure that they would get it using care and restraint. If they needed wood or paper, they would ensure that they got the recycled kind. They ordered their fish from fish farms, making sure that the fish they received were not too young and too small.

They only used animals that were well cared for, and brought up on farms.

And so, from their little town, those children managed to give up being nomads again, just as prehistoric men had done, so many thousands of years ago.
