The FA’s “we only do positive” campaign sought to champion fairness, integrity, inclusion and leadership, highlighting the impact of positive encouragement. With research showing that 90% of players perform better with positive encouragement we promote this mantra across the Club, from our newly promoted first team to our box fresh U7 teams. I challenge you as supporters to only do positive: encourage, be humble in victory, be gracious in defeat, seek to use appropriate language, and do your bit to ensure we keep all elements of the game beautiful.

With referees as young as 14 officiating our matches, it’s imperative that all participants on the pitch experience a positive and nurturing environment, to enable development and progression in a safe, unintimidating atmosphere.

The Citizens Post

Whilst no one is 100% sure why football is labelled “the beautiful game”, we think it’s a good place to start when discussing Respect. A game of the people, an institution that harvests intense feelings of joy and passion, football is like no other. But how can we ensure that things don’t turn ugly on and off the Ourpitch?junior and youth teams set the standard for the behaviours we expect. For 14 years the FA’s Respect Programme has focused on grassroots football to raise awareness of acceptable and appropriate conduct both on and off the pitch for players, coaches and spectators. Respect Marshalls, respect lines, sin bins and Codes of Conduct are bread and butter for our Youth teams, allowing us to culture an environment of inclusivity, positivity and enjoyment.

We welcome Truro to Winchester for today’s Southern League Premier Division South tie between the 2004 F A Vase winners and the 2007 F A Vase winners. I was fortunate enough to see both finals with Truro beating AFC Totton in their triumph at the new Wembley stadium, the first year it was opened. Today’s match is between the county town of Hampshire and the county town of Cornwall, both of whom are Cathedral cities.

On Saturday we play away to Metropolitan Police who finished fourth in the league last season, but were beaten in the playoffs by Farnborough, while on Bank Holiday Monday we are at home to Gosport Borough in another local derby.Iwould like to take this opportunity to thank all the volunteers who work so hard to make this club what it is whether it is in the role of providing refreshments, washing the kit, being stewards, serving as a manager, coach or a committee member, helping maintain the pitch or clubhouse especially in view of the hot weather we witnessed in July, being a steward, giving vocal support to players at matches, collect money at the gate, coordinate the club’s social media activities and hospitality, treat injured players, assist training sessions , without forgetting the players on the pitch. You are all valuable to this club who are now playing at their highest level since being formed in 1884 as Winchester Swallows, becoming Winchester City in 1907. This is in fact only our 14th season as a Southern League club, but the 8th in succession, with two of these not being completed due to covid.

Truro are managed by Paul Wotton who many people will remember for three seasons he spent at Southampton, but he also made over 400 football league appearances for Plymouth Argyle which was his home town club and he also captained the team. One of Truro’s best known former players is Jamaican international Barry Hayles who played for Fulham in the Premiership.. Barry recently turned out for Combined Counties outfit Windsor in a pre-season friendly at the age of 50 having played occasionally for Merstham last season.

The only previous between the clubs saw Winchester City win an F A Cup 2nd qualifying round tie 4-0 despite being two divisions lower than their opponents with Craig Feeney scoring 2, and Joe Briggs and Howard Neighbour scoring one apiece. In the next round of the F A Cup Winchester lost 2-1 to last Saturday’s opponents Harrow Borough despite leading 1 0 with ten minutes to go I had in fact previously seen Truro play Eastleigh four times, with both the games at Truro resulting in a long midweek journey and getting home in the early hours. On the second occasion we had previously suffered a Saturday postponement having completed more than half the journey. However this season at least both games between the clubs are Saturday fixtures, with the return fixture scheduled for 19th November, which is also the date of the 2nd round proper of the F A Trophy. However it is worth also mentioning that Truro will be groundsharing with Plymouth Parkway as it appears unlikely that their stadium for Cornwall will be ready in time. It is intended that in addition to Truro City this new stadium based in Langarth near the city of Truro will also host rugby union team Cornish Pirates Truro originally reached the National League South as a result of five promotions in six years, and in 2014/15 returned to this league two seasons after being relegated, and last season reached the playoffs. In 2012/13 when they were relegated it looked doubtful at one stage as to whether they would complete their fixtures so they have done well to bounce back. One sad thing about their previous stay in the Conference South was the death of club stalwart Gill Alderman on the way back from a match at Dover.

I believe that the F A Cup tie is the only instance of us playing a team from Cornwall in either the league or an F A Cup competition. From my past experience it is clear that the Truro club have many passionate and committed supporters who will ensure that football will remain a very important part of the Truro community. At junior school we used to sing the song Trelawny, which reminds one of the spirit of Cornish people.

On Monday we will know our opponents in the 1st qualifying round of the F A Cup with ties being played on 3rd September. It is good that last season’s promotion has enabled us to have a bye to this stage of the competition, but last season was the first time since 2011/12 that we have failed to reach this round of the competition.

Truro City became one of the founder members of the CCFA when they attended the meeting at the Royal Hotel in Truro on 18th September 1889 when the CCFA was founded. Other Clubs present were: Porthcurno, Penzance, Probus School, Liskeard, Dunheved School, Torpoint and Millbrook. City’s first recorded match was played at Truro College against Penzance on 4th October 1889, when they won by 7 goals to 1. Further games were played at Tolgarrick, adjacent to the existing Treyew Road ground. They have also played at Kenwyn and Chapel Hill Their first trophy was won in 1895 when they won the Cornwall Senior Cup beating Launceston by 5 goals to 0. City have won the Cornwall Senior Cup a record 15 times including 1930 when the Cup was shared with Saltash Stars The Final had been drawn and Saltash could not raise a team for the replay due to some of their players having service commitments. Truro did offer to play and let Saltash include some guest players but the CCFA ruled the trophy should be shared, with each club holding the trophy for six months. City joined the newly formed Cornwall Senior League in 1931 after leaving the Plymouth & District League, along with other Cornish Clubs, due to the refusal of the Cornish Clubs to pay more than 50% of the Devon Clubs’ travelling expenses Because of the lack of interest by their supporters – gates were very low in the Cornwall Senior League City decided to rejoin the Plymouth & District League in 1934. As a result of leaving the Cornish Senior League they were barred from entering the Cornwall Senior Cup. They had proposed to run a reserve team in the Senior Cup However at a CCFA meeting on a proposal by Lostwithiel which was seconded by Bodmin Town, Truro were refused admittance to the Cup. They appealed to the FA but received a reply to the effect that the FA could not interfere in a domestic dispute between local clubs in Cornwall. It was to be 1938 before they were re admitted and winning the Senior Cup the same season. They had won the Cornwall Senior League in its first two seasons (1932 & 1933) The P & D League was won in 1937 But in 1931 the season before they first left the P & D League they achieved one of the finest run of results in their long history. In a period of 15 days, they played 9 League games, winning 8 and drawing 1 Their last game was at Dartmouth, which they won 3-2 and in doing so became runners up, 3 points behind champions Royal Marines and 3 in front of 3rd place Saltash Town.TheDurning Lawrence Charity Cup which Truro City gave to the county – has been won 11 times, the first time in 1912 and the last time in 1981. When the South Western League was formed in 1951, City were one of the founder members but they did not meet with immediate success, having to seek re election for the first two seasons. They have had to seek re-election twice more; 1982 and 1983. Their first championship came in 1960/61 and they have been champions four times since: 1969/70, 1992/93, 1995/96 and 1997/98. The South Western League Cup has come to Treyew Road on three occasions: 1959/60, 1966/67 and 1997/98. The League’s Sporting Trophy was won in 1974/75 and 1988/89 and the Best Ground Trophy in 1995/96. At the end of the 1974/75 season, City were forced to leave the South Western League due to the fact that part of their Treyew Road ground had been used for a road-widening scheme and it was 1978 before they were re-admitted

Back in 1929/30 the City “A” team won the Western Division of the County League and retained the championship for the next two seasons. In late 2004, the club was acquired by a new owner and in 2005/06 the club ended the season in runners-up spot and gained promotion to the Toolstation Western League.

The Evely Cup has been won seven times: 1968, 1978, 1986, 1988, 1999,2000 and 2005/6

In season 2016/17 the club finished 19th in the National League South but there was an upturn in fortunes as the Club reached the first round proper of the FA Cup losing 3-1 to Charlton Athletic at the Valley. We also found ourselves amongst the leading pack throughout the campaign before losing in the play-offs.

In season 2012/13, progress was very difficult with the team being hampered both by a 10-point deduction and a League transfer embargo. The club’s very survival was in serious doubt until in October 2012, when the club was saved by the last minute intervention of two local businessmen Unfortunately, the club was relegated at the end of the season but it was lucky to be alive thanks to the new owners after the traumas of the recent past.

In June 2019, the Club was sold to the Cornish Pirates, via a business transfer under an asset deal. This wiped the historical slate clean, heralding the start of an exciting new era.

truro city Todays Visitors

A successful spell at the end of the 2013/14 season brought some stability to the Club. The Club gained promotion in the 2014/15 season via the play off's, beating Hungerford 1-0 in the semi final and St Neots Town 1 0 in the final. The 2015/16 season will be the second time Truro has played at this level.

Season 2010 11 proved to be another momentous one . Vying for the League lead for most of the season with favourites Salisbury City, Truro were finally crowned Champions by four points after a fabulous 6-0 win away at Salisbury and finishing the season with seven straight victories ensuring Blue Square Bet Conference South football for the first time. This set a new British record in that no senior club had ever previously won 5 promotions in 6 seasons

Success continued in 2007/08 season with the first team winning the Toolstation Western League Premier Division by a massive 17 points and thereby becoming the first ever Cornish Club to gain entry into Southern League football. In addition, the reserve side experienced an all-conquering season, going right through the season without defeat and also gained promotion to the South West Peninsula League. To cap it all, the Club’s third team, consisting almost entirely of players under the age of 20, also gained promotion to the first division of the Falmouth/Helston League 2008/09 was another successful season with the first team winning promotion to the Southern League Premier Division as Champions This meant that City equalled the British record with four successive promotions. In Season 2009/10, the Club finished a very creditable 11th in the first year at this new level and were then better prepared to go forward again in the next season.

The eve of the 2018/19 season saw us move from Treyew Road to ground-share with Torquay Utd.

Season 2011/12 was a year of consolidation at this higher level finishing 14th in the club’s first season of Conference football.

The 2006/07 season was the most successful in the Club’s history. At the first attempt winning the Toolstation Western League First Division by a record margin; retaining the Cornwall Senior Cup and capping the season by winning the F A Vase at the New Wembley Stadium with a 3 1 win over AFC Totton, the first time the Trophy had been won by a Club playing at Step 6 in the Football Pyramid and in front of a record crowd of over 37,000.

In season 2015/16 the club finished 4th in the National League South and reached the playoffs.

The Cornish Pirates are a professional rugby team, who have played in the English Championship, the league below the Premiership, since 2002

The Pirates engaged the highly experienced Alex Black as their football consultant to lead the acquisition and he remains in this role. The club were forced to vacate their long-term home of Treyew Road in January 2021 and a temporary ground share agreement was made for City to share at Bolitho Park with Plymouth Parkway until the end of the 2022/23 season.

Truro are a very big club at this level of football and having watched a lot of games so far this season and in pre-season, they are comfortably the best side we have seen so far, that’s proven to be the case as they come to us top of the league, this is not something we will fear, we love it. We could be playing against a Mangotsfield or Barnstaple in previous years and instead, we are pitting our wits against a top side, and we will give it everything to see how we can cope in this company!

DAVOs diary The Citizens Post

Good afternoon and a warm welcome to everyone for today's Southern Premier League match against Truro City FC. I wish all their players, staff and supporters a pleasant stay and a safe, long trip home afterwards.

The first 2 weeks of the season have been slightly up and down, but we come out of it knowing we are not going to be everyone’s whipping boys. The loss to Poole was harsh, no doubt about it, we learnt some lessons from it and the week after we trained very hard and addressed some of the issues and we then drew away at Harrow and beat North Leigh. I am not naive though; they are not top sides at this level, but we were much more like it and to get 4 points away from home is good!!

We now have a run of 3 games against favourites to do well in Truro, Met Police and Gosport, how exciting is that! Can’t wait, starting today, let’s see how we go!

Player wise we have some issues with Henry Brooks away, Simba unlikely, Jack Torniainen injured, IK Hill injured, Bentley and Barron carrying knocks but we will keep pushing ourselves and doing our best to prepare for what we know will be a very tough game and we will need to be at our best to get a result, however that will be the case every week for us knowing we cannot have off days! Get behind us as always, enjoy the game and let’s see what we can do together to have a positive day!

Perhaps that comes from many years scribbling away for The NLP and having the chance to tell so many stories. From Lincoln City’s remarkable run to the quarter-finals, to speaking to first-timers just happy to have their name in the hat at the extra preliminary round stage.

Perhaps there’s something to be said for Friday night football, with a healthy crowd in attendance. Fans pour through the turnstile block just before kick-off to pay their £7 - £4 for concessions – and £1 for a programme. Outside the Brecklanders’ bar, the air hummed with that early season chatter of optimism and familiar faces catching up The game was great. Three goals in four first-half minutes before a net-busting stoppage-time equaliser from Soham’s Luke Brown to set-up a replay. You could see what it meant. And we will see similar tales over the coming weeks and the competitions bounces from one round to the next. Maybe those who think the magic has gone aren’t looking in the right place…

Maybe it has, maybe it hasn’t when the elite clubs join. I still like it, will always watch the final and generally buy into the idea it is a pretty special cup competition.

THERE’S NOT much that grinds my gears like the debate around the FA Cup, the magic or lack thereof.

Just 83 days after Liverpool lifted the trophy, the world’s oldest competition kicked off again. The sums of money are tiny in comparison, but still a vital £1,125 is up for grabs for the 208 winners in the extra preliminary. Indeed, even the losers at this stage take £375 – all vital pounds for Non-League clubs at the level.

By Mat Badcock

I spoke to former Bowers & Pitsea manager Rob Small recently. His side reached the first round proper last term after dumping out National League Aldershot Town in the fourth round qualifying. They were draw at Lincoln and, for them, it really was the pinnacle, a day they won’t ever forget.

For me, it is these early rounds where the true heart of the competition really is. Where, for some clubs, just getting through a few rounds and getting, for example, a draw with a Step 2 club is reason to celebrate. Or where reaching the first round is the dream.

ByMatt Badcock

In early January, the usual debate will be trotted out about the FA Cup and how seriously Premier League clubs take it and question whether the competition has lost its lustre.

Last Friday night I popped along to Thetford Town and Soham Town Rangers. Bodies desperately thrown in front of shots at goal, last ditch tackles, full-blooded challenges and a stoppage-time equaliser lashed into the top cor ner sparking wild celebrations.
