The Citizens Post Spotlight: Super fan – Mark Rowe We know we have the best fans in Hampshire, of that there is no doubt. Travelling around the south of the country, braving the freezing cold and pouring rain, win, lose or draw, our committed fans can be relied on to support the team home and away. One fan in particular, never not seen without his Winchester City FC baseball cap, is worthy of recognition and our gratitude. A steadfast Liverpool fan, Mark Rowe shares his football devotion with Winchester City FC. One of our greatest supporters, and often seen donning more merchandise than we knew existed, Mark openly talks about his passion for football helping his mental health. Supporting the Club and being involved in other aspects of football has enabled him to gain in confidence whilst improving his communication and social skills. His support extends to writing to local and national newspapers about his passion for the game, and encourages people from all walks of life to get involved in coaching, playing and spectating. Mark coaches and participates in Recreational Football involving social, casual, low contact matches held at Kings School Astro pitch on Mondays (8pm) and Fridays (8:30pm). He clearly bought us some good luck on Saturday as the boys played incredibly well with a truly impressive cup victory over Poole Town. Thank you Mark for your dedication to the Club and your committed support; our football family is all the better with you in it.

The Citizens Post malcolms musings We welcome Hartley Wintney for tonight’s league game. This will be the first ever league game between the clubs, as although Hartley Wintney have been members of the Southern League since the 2017/18 season they spent their first season in Division 1 East, when we played in the Division 1 West, and after one season in the Division 1 East they were promoted to the Premier Division, while we have only just been promoted to the Premier Division. Although Hartley Wintney is located in Hampshire they have never played in the Hampshire or Wessex Leagues. We have though played them in recent times, meeting in the 2018/19 Hampshire Senior Cup where Hartley Wintney won a penalty shoot out after the match had finished 0-0. Last season we played them in the league cup, with Hartley Wintney again winning a penalty shoot out, after this time the scores finished level at 1-1, with Max Smith scoring an equalizer for us, with a header from a Jamie Barron cross, after Tony Raggett had given Hartley Witney a 79th minute lead. One thing is certain though is that if the scores are still level after 90 minutes tonight a penalty shoot out will not be used to determine the winners. We may have played Hartley Wintney in the Hampshire Senior Cup or even the Russell Cotes Cup in an earlier year, but if we did I have no record of the result. I have never been to Hartley Wintney’s ground, but I have been to Hartley Wintney for cricket several times and on one occasion on the walk from Winchfield station passed a sign to the football club. Hartley Wintney were formed in 1897 and played in the Basingstoke and District League before joining the Aldershot and District League which they won in three consecutive seasons during the 1970’s and in 1978 became founder members of what is now known as the Combined Counties League. After finishing in the lower half of the table in the first two seasons they did much better next time around and finished runners up with Malden Town only pipping them for the title on goal difference. In each of the next three seasons they finished in the top five and were champions in 1982/83. However when they finished 6th in 2001/02 it was their first top six placing for 20 years. Shortly after this the league was divided into a Premier Division and Division 1, and in 2005 they were relegated to Division 1, but three seasons later they returned to the Premier Division, only to go straight back down again. Again it only took them only three seasons to regain their Premier Division place and although their first season back was a struggle in which they finished only two points above the relegated Sandhurst Town their return to the top flight was more successful this time and in 2015/16 they were champions again finishing 10 points ahead of their nearest rivals. An even more comfortable title success the following year saw them win promotion to the Southern League Division 1 East where after finishing fourth they were promoted via the playoffs. In their first season in the Premier Division they finished a respectable finished eighth. Last season was their only other completed season and they finished 18th, although three teams who finished below them escaped relegation. In 2013/14 they battled through five rounds of the F A Cup before losing to Daventry Town in the 4th qualifying round, and they also reached this round last season when they lost to Dagenham and Red ridge by a single goal. In 2015/16 they joined the F A Vase in the 1st qualifying round and won through six rounds before losing to eventual finalists Hereford. Amongst their former players are Steve Finnieston and David Howells who have both played in soccer’s top flight, while Alex Haddow, Martin Williams and Rowan Vine have also played league football. Former managers Neville Roach and Dave Tuttle have also played in the football league. Amongst the claims to fame of the town of Hartley Wintney is that golfer Justin Rose the winner of the US Open in 2013 learnt to play at the local golf course. Back to the subject of Winchester it was a great article on our junior section. I think it is very important for clubs to cater for players of all age groups. I have seen clubs merely consisting of a squad of good players funded by one individual, when once the financial benefactor goes and many of the players in all likelihood follow suit there is barely a club left. It is good to see Henry Brooks break into the Winchester first team squad and in recent years we have blooded many youngsters especially in cup games, and I K Hill is certainly someone who played for the club at a young age. We thank the coaches and parents who support our junior players, who have a very important role to play at this football club.

Todays Visitors hartley wintney Hartley Wintney Football Club was founded in 1897, the club's nickname of 'The Row' coming from Hartley Row, a former hamlet of Hartley Wintney. Playing in the Basingstoke League in the late 1940s and into the 50s, the club was successful despite playing on a farm field with a small wooden shed as a changing room; this was Causeway Farm adjacent to the golf and cricket clubs. Amongst the villagers who ran the club was its outstanding Secretary, Fred Cook. Fred’s minutes of meetings covering seasons 1948 to 1964 describe the change of club colours from blue squares to tangerine in July 1956. The club moved to its present Memorial Ground in Green Lane in 1953. A pavilion was erected and the team continued in the Basingstoke League, and later in the Aldershot League. In 1973, Glynn Howell was appointed Manager. In his six-year reign, the team won the Aldershot Senior League three times in succession, and the Aldershot Senior Cup. After several seasons in the Aldershot League, Hartley joined the Combined Counties League (formerly Surrey Senior League). After the initial seasons in the CCL, the club appointed Ian Bedford as First Team Manager. An influx of senior players during the 80s included several ex-pros: Mick Travers (1980-87, ex-Reading, Portsmouth & Aldershot); Richard Walden (1985-87; ex-Aldershot, Sheffield Wed & Newport County); and Steve Finnieston (1985-88; ex-Chelsea, Cardiff & Sheffield Utd). Within Ian’s three years in management, the team secured the League Title (82-83), Runners-Up (81-82), Aldershot Senior Cup Winners (80-81), and George Allen Cup Winners (81-82). The Row were also Runners-Up in the League Cup (82-83) and Aldershot Senior Cup (81-82). During this period a new clubhouse was opened. David Willoughby, then Secretary and Treasurer, and Bill Mitchell, then club Chairman, devoted exceptional hours to this venture. In 2007-08 under manager Mike Scott, the club gained promotion to the Combined Counties Premier Division, but 08-09 ended in relegation. Under a new management team of Pete Gray and John Condon, the first team rallied, finishing 5th in CCL Div 1 in 09-10. Coach Louis King then took the reigns as manager, guiding the team to 7th in CCL Div 1 in 2010-11. Ex-pro Neville Roach took charge for 2011-12, assisted by Mick Wollen and Scott Tarr, and the club secured third in Division 1 to clinch a return to the CCL Premier. Hartley also had a fine FA Cup run to the Third Qualifying Round. But the euphoria of promotion was dampened when the coaching staff and almost the entire squad left at the end of the season. Ex-Millwall defender, Dave Tuttle, was given the summer to prepare a new squad for 2012-13. However, a string of poor results led to a second change in management in less than 4 months. 24 year-old ex-Hartley striker, Ben Dillon, was given his first managerial role. Alongside Jason Minton and Joe Lawler, Ben set about rebuilding, with Hartley well adrift at the bottom of the table. The introduction of a talented group of players restored the spirit around the club. In what became known as the season of the club’s ‘Great Escape’, the Row’s place in the CCL Premier was secured against all the odds after a remarkable second half of the season. The 2013-14 season highlight was the run to the 4th Qualifying Round of the FA Cup for the first time, losing at home to Daventry Town in front of a crowd of over 1,000. The club finished 7th in the CCL Premier. A new club crest was commissioned. Designer Philippa Bell incorporated elements tracing the village back to the 13th century when known as Hertleye Wynteneye - ‘the clearing in the forest where the deer graze by Winta’s island’ - hence the tree and stag motifs. 2014-15 saw the club finish 9th in the CCL Premier, after which Ben Dillon stepped down and Dan Brownlie and Anthony Millerick were appointed as joint First Team Managers, with Youth Team Manager,

Todays Visitors hartley wintney Luke Tuffs, as First Team Coach. It was a very eventful 2015-16. After a memorable FA Cup win at Merthyr Town in the 2nd Qualifying Round, Hartley came back from 2 down only to concede an injury time goal at Conference South Eastbourne Borough. In the FA Vase, a longstanding club record was broken by reaching the 5th Round Proper. In front of a sell-out 1,300 at Green Lane, eventual finalists Hereford proved too strong, but the Row went on to claim the 2015-16 CCL Premier Division title, finishing 10 points clear. Promotion, however, was denied due to ground grading. The 2016-17 season under Dan Brownlie and Anthony Millerick was extraordinary. Propelled by the goals of strike duo Sam Argent and Ross Cook, the Row topped the CCL Premier Division for the entire season, reached the semi-final of the Hampshire County Cup and Final of the Aldershot Senior Cup. Guided by Chairman Luke Mullen, the club secured the required ground grading to take their place in the Southern League at Step 4 for the first time. Topping a wonderful season, Luke Tuffs’ Youth team won the Hampshire FA Youth Cup against a strong Aldershot Town U18. Now in Southern League South, East Division, 2017-18 saw the Row sat within the top four for much of the season, never dropping below 8th, and embark on their first FA Trophy campaign, going out in the First Round Proper to eventual finalists Bromley. A play-off place was secured, the Row winning their semi-final against AFC Dunstable 2-0. Cambridge City had triumphed at Hayes & Yeading in the other semi. In front of a crowd of over 700 at Green Lane, a tense game was decided by a single goal scored by Nic Ciardini on the end of Jack Ball's towering header to gain promotion to the Southern Premier South at Step 3. The final season highlight was in beating Eversley & California 4-1 to lift the Aldershot Senior Cup. With Dan Turkington now co-manager alongside Anthony ‘Millers’ Millerick, 2018-19 started well at Step 3, with a late run seeing Hartley finish 8th. To remain at the level required another round of ground improvements, stretching the club and its volunteers to the limit. The Covid-19 affected 2019-20 Southern Premier South campaign only clicked into gear for the Row shortly before the season was abandoned. With Millerick as manager and Steve Noakes coming in alongside as his assistant, the return of several familiar faces in the New Year promised fans an exciting run-in to the end. Instead, what followed was a battle off the pitch for the club’s survival in the face of lost revenue due to extreme wet weather and then the pandemic. 2020-21 was again cut short by the coronavirus pandemic and league results declared void. However, the season was successful for two cup runs: In the FA Cup, Hartley reached the 4th Qualifying Round, going out at National League side Dagenham & Redbridge FC to the only goal of the game after an excellent effort. In the Hampshire Senior Invitational Cup, staged as Covid restrictions were eased, Hartley reached the final and defeated Folland Sports 4-0 to lift the cup. There was deep sadness just before the end of the season when Club President, Bill Mitchell, passed away in April. Whilst he held the title of President, he was so much more. A true gentleman who continued with his family's tradition of being Hartley Wintney through and through. The post-Covid 2021-22 season proved a tough one, with the club’s resources severely depleted. Survival at Step 3 presented a huge task, achieved by Anthony Millerick and his spirited team with another good run-in to the end. Silverware arrived by way of the Aldershot Senior Cup, the Row winning 5-2 in the final against Fleet Town. After a lengthy and hugely successful spell as manager, ‘Millers’ stepped down at the end of the season, becoming the Club’s Director of Football, and Ross Weatherstone and Tyrone Newton were appointed joint managers for 2022-23.

The Citizens Post

DAVOs diary Good evening and a warm welcome to everyone for tonight’s league match against Hartley Wintney, we wish their players, staff and supporters a pleasant evening and safe trip back up the m3 afterwards. Hartley are a club I have a lot of respect for, Anthony Millerick did an amazing job to get them through the leagues and stayed out at step 3, he has passed the reins on now and they will no doubt be looking to kick on, they have recruited well and have some calibre loan players in as well and so today will be tough but both teams will be pushing hard for the points so it should be a very good game! Saturday was a day to remember, firstly we have made another record and gone further than ever before in the FA Trophy and so that’s great, more than that though to beat an in form Poole Town and to do it fairly convincingly with a deserved 2-0 win was great, we put in a display of heart and courage and the positive thing is we can use the ball better still, so there is more to come! We have to now back that up in the next batch of league games, starting with tonight! Player news how nice to see Chuggy and Griggsy back doing what they do, we also have a wealth of talent who were on the bench and 3 massive players still injured with Luke King, IK and Torns still out (the latter 2 not far away from a return), so things are looking positive on that front, we just have to keep pushing ourselves and each other on and try and grind out some more positive performances which will produce us some good results! Enjoy tonight and let’s hope we can get the level of performance we will need against a good side, play your part and roar us on like your did on Saturday! Up the winch!

Match Report By Malcolm Clarke

WINCHESTER CITY 2 - 0 POOLE TOWN Winchester won their first match in the F A Trophy for six years and their first home game in the competition since beating Taunton Town2008/09 as they avenged a 3-0 defeat on the opening day of the season. Poole went into this match having won their last three league games and been unbeaten away from home all season. This is Poole's 39th season in the F A Trophy and two seasons ago they reached the 2nd round proper of the competition for the first time. Since the game between the two clubs earlier in the season Tony Lee who has an excellent scoring record for the club has returned from a loan spell at Farnborough and took his place in the Poole starting line-up. In midweek Winchester announced the return t the club of defender Callum Chugg and midfielder Ollie Griggs and they were both in Winchester's starting line-up as were goalkeeper Jordi Valero who played in the Hampshire Senior Cup match against Fareham. Bringing in Chugg, Griggs and Valero represented the three changes o the starting line-up from the match at Merthyr with Charlie Philpott ill and Mark Jamison and Alex MacAllister on the substitutes bench. The early stages of the match saw both teams mount attacks, but with virtually no on target efforts. For Poole Jack Dickson put in a dangerous cross that no-one could on the end of. Henry Brooks whose pace on th4e right hand side was always a threat had one shot that went wide, while Archie Willcox was just off target following a Jamie Barron free kick. Winchester took the lead in the 39th minute when the ball was played into the box and remained there a while before Simba Mlambo put the ball away. Having conceded the first goal of the game in all eight league games it was a welcome sight to see Winchester draw first blood. Winchester went into half time with a 1-0 lead, but early in the second half Jordi Valero made an excellent save from a Will Fletcher header tipping the ball over the bar. Poole were enjoying a lot of possession and it required some determined defending by Winchester with some important blocks to restrict them to half chances. Luke Holmes's cross just eluded Will Fletcher, but Winchester were looking dangerous on the break, and a cross from the right from Warren Bentley just eluded Winchester players who had moved into the box. Winchester though score their all-important second goal in the 78th minute when Warren Bentley again broke clear on the right and this time the effort went in off the post to give Bentley a goal against his former club. Poole had some attacks after the second goal went in, but any shots they had were comfortably dealt with. The end of the game was fairly feisty with Poole's Tony Lee being sent off. Right at the death Poole were awarded a penalty, but Toby Holmes's spot kick hit the woodwork and Jordi Valero made an excellent save from the follow up to complete Winchester's victory. In the second half Winchester introduced Dan Neild, Silvano Obeng and Mark Jamison as substitutes and they respectively replaced Jamie Barron, Henry Brooks and Warren Bentley. Winchester are now in the 1st round of the competition for the first time in their history where they will join 63 other clubs who were victorious in the weekend's ties. After the match Craig Davis acknowledged the spirit, his players had shown against a team he rates as one of the best in the division. Winchester are at home to Chesham on Saturday and away to Yate on the following Tuesday. The Winchester under 23 team containing several first team fringe players beat their Andover Town counterparts 6-1 with six different goalscorers despite conceding the first goal of the game.
