The Citizens Post Spotlight: on – YOUTH Now we are a few weeks into the season, we thought it would be a good opportunity to catch up with our youth teams, find out what our 15-18 year old players have been getting up to. Incase you are not familiar with the Youth set up these are our U16 and U18 teams. As a rule, our U16 teams play in the City of Southampton Youth league, and our U18 teams play in the Hampshire Combination league. Vital to the player’s development at youth level is the U23 team, which sees players from 16+ being given the opportunity to compete in a mid-week league alongside first teamers requiring additional game time. Our U16 team is managed by Russ Vowles and assisted by Lee House and Mike O’Reilly, a team that has a few players that have come through the age groups, as well as a few that came from the Flyers team that Lee previously managed. Sitting 2nd in Division 1 at the moment behind Millbrook with a game in hand, they are undefeated and have had an excellent start to the season. We have two teams at U18, both competing in the Hampshire Combination League, the Black team in the East division, the Reds in Central. The Reds are managed by Simon Woodley, and are so far undefeated this season. Reggie Hodan is top of the table for goals scored to date with an incredible 11 in just five games played. A regular in our U23 side where he has also scored 3 goals in four games.

Jamie Taylor and Mo Zawahir manage the U18 Blacks who have won their last four games. Currently 2nd in the table their recent form makes them strong contenders for the league title alongside a strong Horndean side. New to the U18s, having had a successful season for the U16 Black team in 21/22, Leo Webster has made a great impression as goal keeper and also gets game time for the U23 team. The U23s, managed by Ryan Pryce and Mike Carter, is an important part of our Youth set up. The opportunity for those that prove themselves in our youth teams, to play alongside first team players in an adult league is a great stepping stone and effectively demonstrates our player pathway. There have been 14 different U18 players so far this season run out for the U23s which has contributed to a successful start to their season. It’s encouraging to see all our youth teams in such strong positions in their leagues. As always, a big thank you to our managers, coaches and Jamie Ricketts, Head of Youth development for the work they put in behind the scenes which makes our Youth set up as strong and successful as it currently is. Keep up the fantastic work!

The Citizens Post malcolms musings We welcome Bracknell to Winchester for tonight’s league game. The last time we played Bracknell in a competitive fixture was in the 2017/18 season when we beat them 4-0 on their 3G pitch in an F A Cup tie with first half goals by Andy Jenkinson and Rob Carr and second half goals by Rob Flooks and Pat Cox giving us the victory. However it is worth pointing out that at the time of this match we were a step 4 club and Bracknell were a step 5 club. Bracknell come into this division after a superb season in the Isthmian League Division 1 Central in which they were promoted as champions winning 31 of their 36 league games, scoring 90 league goals and conceding only 12 and finishing 20 points ahead of runners up Chertsey. They and Hanwell Town who were promoted through the playoffs have transferred to the Southern League from the Isthmian League this season. The fortunes of Bracknell Town football club are very much on the up in both the completed seasons of 2018/19, and the incomplete seasons of 2019/20 they performed well, and they have an experienced and successful manager in Bobby Wilkinson.. In the former season they finished runners up to Hayes and Yeading, but lost the playoff final to Cheshunt who scored 23 fewer goals than them in the 38 game league season, In fact as recently as 2012/13 Bracknell were a step5 club playing in the Hellenic League Division 1 East and were in fact promoted that season despite finishing fifth. I believe that of the clubs in this division no club have played in a step 6 league more recently than Bracknell, although Hartley Wintney did so in 2011/12. However from 1984/85 to 2009/10 Bracknell were members of either the Isthmian or Southern League, but they had a bad three season spell in which they suffered two relegations. . We played Bracknell in the Southern League South and West Division 1 in the 2006/07, 2007/08 and 2008/09 seasons, with these games producing two wins and four draws, with Winchester winning the away fixture 2-1 in 2006/07, and the home fixture 3-2 in 2007/08. At this time neither club was setting the Southern League alight, and in 2008/09 they were the bottom two teams in the division, with Bracknell finishing above us as a result of having a goal difference of -36 as opposed to -37. However although we left the league at the end of that season Bracknell fared disastrously the following season losing 40 of their 42 league games and conceding 187 league goals in the process and they were relegated as a result. During their relegation season of 2009/10 season they lost 6-0 to a Gosport Borough team captained by our manager Craig Davis who scored the opening goal in this game. Following relegation they struggled in the Hellenic League initially and after two seasons were relegated from the Premier Division to Division 1 East, although they returned to the top flight one season later. However after five seasons in the Premier Division they were promoted back to the Isthmian League. In the last two of these they finished runners up with impressive records. In the second of these they obtained 98 points from 38 games and scored 129 goals and were only denied the title on goal difference with champions Thatcham who also won the F A Vase that season conceding two fewer goals than them.. . In the F A Cup Bracknell reached the 1st round proper in 2000/01 where they lost to Lincoln, and the 4th qualifying round in 1987/88, 1995/96 and 2003/04 where they lost respectively to Cheltenham, Burton Albion and Barnet. Interestingly enough Lincoln, Cheltenham and , Burton are all current football league division 1 clubs and Barnet are a former football league club . In fact Barnet, Cheltenham and Lincoln were the winners of the National League in 2014/15, 2015/16 and 2016/17 respectively. This season a superb win over Banbuty Unitrd from the National League North has put them in the 1st round proper where they will be in action next weekend. In the F A Vase Bracknell reached the 5th round proper e in 1975/76 and 1983/83 and the 4th round proper in 1985/86,. This was a competition in which in our first four years of participation we won the competition, and reached the quarter finals, 5th round proper and the 4th round proper in the other three seasons. Bracknell play at Larges Lane in Bracknell and at one time Wokingham and Emmbrook groundshared with them. They have previously played in the Ascot and District, Reading and District, Great Western Combination, Surrey Senior, Spartan, Isthmian and Southern Leagues. Today will be the first time I will have seen Bracknell Town play xperience of seeing Bracknell play, although I did contribute a history of the club for a Hellenic League Supplementary Cup against Clanfield (Oxon) in 2011 where both teams were nicknamed The Robins and Bracknell lost 3-1.

Todays Visitors bracknell town Bracknell Town Football Club was formed in 1896 as Old Bracknell Wanderers and changed its name to Bracknell F.C. in 1949. The club played in the local leagues until joining the Great Western league. After four seasons in this league and renaming the club Bracknell Town in 1962 the club was elected to the Surrey Senior League, which they won in the 1969/70 season. The club also won the league cup in 1968/69 and 1969/70. After this success, the club entered the Spartan League (later re-named the London Spartan League) and finished runners up on goal average in 1975/76, in which they also reach the fifth round of the FA Vase. After winning the league in 1982/83, they were promoted in 1984 to the Isthmian League Division Two South. They were promoted to Division One as runners-up in 1985/86, finishing third in their highest ever league placing. However, in 1988/89, Bracknell Town were relegated and following a re-organisation of the Isthmian League were placed in Division Three in 19991/92. They returned to Division Two after winning the league in 1993/94, but after five seasons were relegated back down to Division Three. Further league re-organisation in 2002/03 the club was moved into the Isthmian League Division Two South, but moved to the Southern Football League Division One West after two season. Bracknell were reprieved from relegation in 2008/09 but were relegated the following season to the Hellenic League Premier Division. The downward trend continued and after just two seasons Hellenic League Premier Division they were relegated to Hellenic League Division One East. The Club returned to the Premier Division after just one season in Division One and although flirting with relegation recovered to finish just below halfway. At the start of the 2016/17 season under the guidance of new chairman Kayne Steinborn-Busse the club embarked on a major re-development of the ground with the installation of a state-of-the-art 3G pitch, changing facilities and club house and in keeping with this total modernisation re-branded the clubs logo. The reaped major benefits from this work with all teams down to the youngest age group now able to play and train at Larges Lane. For the senior club, the reserve team returned to the Suburban League whilst the First team had their most successful season for a very long time. Under the management of Mark Tallentire, we were involved in the Hellenic Premier Division title and promotion back to the Southern League, which went down to the final day. Unfortunately

Todays Visitors bracknell town we lost on the day and finished runners-up, however the disappointment was tempered by winning three cups, the Berks and Bucks Senior Trophy, the Hellenic League Challenge Cup and the Reading Senior Cup where the final was played at Reading FC’s Madejeski stadium. In 2017/2018 season we had a titanic battle with Thatcham Town for the top slot, both teams accumulating 98 points for the season with Thatcham Town’s superior goal difference of 104 goals securing the title by a mere 2 goals. However, due to a restructure of the leagues our efforts were rewarded with promotion to Step 4 in to the Bostik South Central League. We also managed to get our own back by beating Thatcham in the final of the Bluefin Sport Challenge Cup to add another trophy to our collection. The 2018/19 season was our first venture into Step 4 for many years and once again we came close, finishing second behind Hayes & Yeading and missing out on promotion by losing the play-off final to Cheshunt. We reached the semi-final of the Velocity Trophy with impressive victories against sides higher up the footballing pyramid. We started the 2019/2020 season with a new stronger ambition and a number of new faces in the squad. It took slightly longer than planned to get things to gel and we needed to make a few changes to the set up. We are grateful to Mark Tallentire who stepped in as manager until we found an ideal replacement. In December 2019 we had the pleasure to announce the hugely experienced Bobby Wilkinson as permanent manager. Bobby wasted no time in building a very strong back room team and together they will hopefully rebuild on the platform that we started in 2016/17 and push the club forward to greater things in the coming seasons. 2021/2022 was a monumental season for the club, under the guidance of Bobby Wilkinson we gained promotion to Step 3 for the first time in the clubs’ history. The Isthmian League South Central title was secured with 96 points out of a possible 108 and with a 20 point winning margin. . The club now enters new chapter as we look to establish ourselves in the Southern League Premier South for the 2022/23 Season.

DAVOs diary Good evening and a warm welcome to everyone for tonight’s league match against Bracknell Town, we wish their players, staff and supporters a pleasant evening and safe trip home. Bracknell have a momentous day next week against Ipswich and I really hope that they have an amazing day and will fly the southern league flag so well, there is no doubt that they are a very good side hence their FA cup run, this has had a bit of an impact on league as they have games in hand, once the cup is out of the way I firmly suspect they will be in the play off push for sure! They have some top players and we will need to be bang at it for this game that’s for sure! Talking of bang at it, we most certainly were not on Saturday against a very good Swindon Supermarine side, they weathered an early storm and then dispatched us really, we threw men forward and they really killed us off later but in a cup game you have to go for it, it was a good lesson for the lads that anything less than 100 percent intensity and concentration and we will come unstuck! It mainly shows how well we did to beat them away the previous weekend to be honest and at this stage in the season we would have taken where we are, we now need to keep pushing and building and try and get on another good run starting today! In terms of player’s availability we are only really missing Torns and Luke King at the moment, other than that we are at full strength, lads need to stay on their toes and ready to step in and produce when they are on the pitch, they are a great bunch and are working super hard we just have to not give any team an inch and we can go and get some more good results! Enjoy the game, keep shouting and roaring us on, we need everyone pushing to help us get a great performance which we will need for a positive result! Up the winch!

Match Report By Malcolm Clarke

SWINDON SUPERMARINE 1 - 2 WINCHESTER CITY IN their first Saturday away league match since mid-August Winchester achieved an excellent 2-1 win against a Swindon Supermarine team who were previously unbeaten at home in the league. With two of the other matches involving two of the six teams below them in the table, it was likely that Winchester would have dropped down the table if they had not got something from the game. As a result, Plymouth Parkway and Harley Wintney the two winners of these other matches both remain three points behind Winchester. For Winchester though it was a great performance to beat a team just outside the playoffs on a home pitch they normally perform well on and in the process achieve for the first time in the league this season a Saturday victory and a first half clean sheet. Earlier in this month Swindon Supermarine had signed Joe Tumelty a familiar opponent of Winchester's and he was making only his second appearance for the team. With Charlie Philpott working Jordi Valero was given another outing in goal, while Simba Mlambo and Silvano Obeng were given starting berths, with both I K Hill and Dan Neild both of whom were substituted on Tuesday on the bench. Otherwise, the starting line-up was unchanged from Tuesday. The first half was goalless, but fairly even with both teams having chances. In the fourth minute the home team's Zack Kotwica hit the bar. Valero made a couple of saves from the home team's leading scorer Harry Williams, the first following a header from a corner. At the other end both Jamie Barron and Warren Bentley had efforts saved by the opposing goalkeeper. Simba Mlambo who was set up by Warren Bentley had a chance, but his effort was straight at the goalkeeper. At the other end a good team move ended with Harry Williams shooting over, but the teams went into the interval all square. Early in the second half Harry Williams hir the side netting for the home team, but Winchester had a great chance to take the lead when Simba Mlambo sholt over from close range following a cross from Henty Brooks. Valero makes a further good save from Williams, while at the other end Archie Willcox has a header saved and Henry Brooks's follow up shot is wide. Winchester though did take the lead in the 70th minute when a header from Henry Brooks sets up Silvano Obeng who scores with a low shot from the edge of the area. A minute later it was 2-0 when straight from the kickoff the ball was played back to Mat Liddiard who tried to clear the ball, but his clearance hit Warren Bentley and with the goalkeeper slightly out of position as a result of trying to put himself in a position to receive a pass from Liddiard, he could not step the ball from entering the net despite Bentley being more than 30 yards out. The goal clearly had an element of good fortune about it. but it is also fair to say that predatory goalscorer will usually try and intercept defensive clearances and try and benefit from any miskicks. Swindon Supermarine though pulled back in the 77th minute when Conor McDonagh who came on as substitute after the second goal was scored with a low shot after Joe Tumelty's free kick was not cleared. For the remainder of the game which included several minutes of added on time Winchester were under a lot of pressure, although at times they looked dangerous on the break. Valero made another good save from McDonagh and also saved from Tyrone Duffus. Right at the death the home goalkeeper went up for a corner kick, but Winchester were showing a lot of resilience and working hard as a team and achieved a hard-earned win. In the second half Winchester bought on I K Hill, Claudio Herbert and Callum Chugg to respectively replace Mlambo, Brooks and Obeng. Winchester had five players booked, but the game was competitive one without being dirty. Winchester under 23 team beat their Hiltingbury counterparts 2-0 thanks to two second half goals. Winchester are at home to Swindon Supermarine in the F A Trophy on Saturday and on the following Tuesday are at home to Bracknell Town in the league. Six days after playing Winchester Bracknell will be playing Ipswich at home in a televised F A Cup tie.

Match Report By Malcolm Clarke

BEACONSFIELD TOWN 0 - 1 WINCHESTER CITY Winchester City completed a sequence of three away league games in six days with an impressive haul of seven points from these fixtures as they beat Beaconsfield Town 1-0 and moved to 12th in the league table and moved above Beaconsfield in the process. Although Beaconsfield have lost more matches than they have won this season they went into this fixture with their last four fixtures having provided two league wins and progress to the next round of the F A Trophy. Earlier in the season they beat Metropolitan Police away from home and their team against Winchester included former Winchester City player Dan Bradshaw and Sam Togwell who in addition to captaining Eastleigh in the National League has 333 football league appearances to his name, while Kyel Reid on their substitutes bench has played three matches in the Premiership for West Ham and 169 matches in the football league. The clubs had previously met in both the 2006/07 and 2008/09 seasons when the opponents were known as Beaconsfield S Y C O B with these fixtures providing three Winchester victories and one Beaconsfield victory which was a 1-0 home victory in the latter season. Since the 2003/04 campaign Beaconsfield have only spent one season outside the Southern League and this is their fifth successive season as a Southern League Premier Division club. For Winchester Jordi Valero's form in goal meant that returning goalkeeper Charlie Philpott was on the bench. I K hill and Callum Chugg who had come on as substitutes on Saturday were in the starting line-up with Mark Jamison and Warren Bentley on the bench. Bentley was initially named in the starting line-up but had to pull out in the warmup and was replaced by Simba Mlambo. In addition, Claudio Herbert came in for Callum Baughan at right back. Early on Jordi Valero made a good save to deny the home team, while at the other end Simba Mlambo forced Ravan Constable in the home goal to make a save. Beaconsfield have a goal disallowed and Jamie Barron forced Constable inro action twice, with the goalkeeper saving one effort well and stopping the other effort at the second attempt. However, the first half which was goalless was fairly even, but significantly having waited two and a half months for their first clean sheet in the first half of a league game Winchester have now achieved two within 53 hours of each other. Winchester took the lead in the 55th minute when a free kick from Jamie Barron in a dangerous position was met by Callum Chugg After the goal Winchester had to soak up some pressure from the home team. Beaconsfield were awarded a penalty which Jordi Valero saved diving to his right, they hit the post, had one effort cleared off the line and late on had a free kick in a dangerous position. However as has been the case in recent games played with great determination and manager Craig Davis thought that the team had played better in the second half than the first. He also thanked the supporters who made the trip and were in good voice. In the second half Dan Neild and Mark Jamison were introduced as second half substitutes replacing Henry Brooks and I K Hill respectively. In four appearances goalkeeper Jordi Valero has achieved clean sheets and has twice faced penalties which have resulted in him making excellent saves. Winchester's success has certainly attracted widespread praise on twitter, with Belper a club in the North of England tweeting Valero's penalty and former Alresford manager Richard Luffman now at Cribbs also supplying his congratulations.
