The Citizens Post Spotlight: on – west stand fans Despite a solid 2nd half performance on Tuesday evening the result didn’t go our way with Bracknell taking 3 points home with them. Despite that, we did win the “fans of the match” award as Bracknell supporters were very complimentary about the West Stand Fans. Growing in number and volume our young fans made quite the impression on the visiting supporters who said they lacked young supporters at their own home ground. With songs about Simba, “Craigy” Davis and Warren “whose name’s a car” Bentley, they have been tasked by the gaffer to expand their repertoire to include Callum Chugg amongst others. Singing and supporting throughout the game, these young fans are fast becoming an important part of our fan base, one which the players can’t fail to notice. Some of these youngsters travel to away matches as well, amazing to see this level of support for a non-league club. Our attendance figures have been gradually rising over the past 12 months, contributing factors will include the support we have seen from our junior and youth players, who as registered players of Winchester City gain free entry to first team games. Obviously, success breeds success and the team’s winning streak at the beginning of the year, followed by their promotion, then the new challenge of the Southern Premier league has encouraged a greater following. As always, we are grateful to everyone for their support. As a grassroots club we rely on our turnstile, bar and burger van revenue to keep the first team viable, and the players and coaching staff rely on the positive support from our spectators when out on the pitch. It’s great to see groups of friends meeting here on a Saturday, enjoying a drink, some banter and watching the game - long may that continue! We look forward to hearing what the West Stand Fans come up with next. Keep it clean boys!

The Citizens Post malcolms musings We welcome Tiverton to Winchester for today’s game. At the time of writing this Tiverton were in mid-table, but three of their five league wins had been successes against Poole, Dorchester and Beaconsfield, none of whom are struggling at the wrong end of the table, and in Poole’s case are challenging for promotion… The clubs have only met six times before with three of the games being drawn and three of them being won by Tiverton. The last two matches were in Tiverton’s promotion season of 2016/17 and Tiverton won both of the games between the clubs that season, with Levi Landricombe being their star player, and his brother Mike was also in the team. However none of Tiverton’s previous visits to this ground were in Craig Davis’s time as manager and having seen Tiverton win 3-0 on their last visit here today provides an opportunity for us to show how much we have moved on since then. Many club records have been broken since Craig Davis became manager of Winchester, and one record we can break today is scoring our first home goal against Tiverton, with both of the other games on this ground finishing 0-0. In fact our last goal against Tiverton was a late header by lee Mills following a free kick in a 1-1 draw at Tiverton’s ground in a rearranged midweek fixture in the 2015/16 season after Levi Landricombe had opened the scoring for Tiverton. Kane Simpson who played for Frome last season is a familiar opponent of ours and h in fact scored the only goal of the game when Tiverton beat Frome in the F A Cup this season. However we have signed Dan Walster and Callum Chugg to give us competition for places in defence and even though Tiverton have had several players scoring goals for them this season we kept a clean sheet in the first half in a league game for the first time in the match at Swindon Supermarine and will want to do more of this in the coming weeks, while in the same match we scored at least one goal for the tenth successive game. Although ourselves and Truro City have both won the F A Vase Tiverton are the only team in this division to have won it twice with their successes occurring in 1997/98 and 1998/99, and they were also losing finalists in 1992/93. Tiverton are managed by Scott Rogers who is the son of Martyn Rogers’s cousin. Martyn Rogers is a Tiverton legend having managed the club in two spells, the first from 1992 to 2010 and the second from 2014 to 2021, although for the latter stages of his second spell he was joint manager with Scott. Scott Rogers as a 19 year old scored the winning goal in the 199 FA Vase final and I remember seeing him play for Eastleigh in 2011/12 season. Martyn Rogers has taken charge of well over 1000 games as manager of Tiverrton and he is a former Exeter City player and is also father in law of Craig McAllister who has during more than decades represented several local clubs and also played in the football league. Tiverton joined the Western League in 1973/74, but were relegated from the Premier Division in 1980/81. However after being promoted back to the Premier Division n 1988/89 the 1990’s were a very successful time for the club. During that time they won the Premier Division title four times, finished runners up three times , third once and fourth twice. They scored 1142 league goals in the process, reached the 1st round proper of the F A Cup four times and had the three F A Vase finals. This success enabled them to be promoted to the Southern League. In the first two seasons of Southern League football they finished 4th and 2nd, with the latter placing enabling them to be promoted to the Premier Division. They made a very good start to their Premier Division career following a 6th place in their first season with a playoff position in their second, but in seven of the next eight seasons they finished in the lower half of the table and were relegated in 2010/11. Although they finished in a playoff position in 2013/14 they did not regain their Premier Division place until going up through the playoffs in 2016/17. In their three completed Premier Division since then they have finished 6th, 18th and 13th. They were also well placed in the two truncated seasons. Good luck to Bracknell Town and Merthyr Town in the F A Cup this weekend. Merthyr travel to Buxton who play in the National League North,, while Bracknell Town are at home to Ipswich Town in a match that will be shown on television on Monday evening. Although several other clubs competing in the 1st round proper have won the F A Cup previously Ipswich are the only one amongst them to also win one of the three major European club competitions They have reached the F A Cup 1st round proper seven times, four of these as a Western League club, and reached the 5th round of the F A Trophy in 2000/01.

Todays Visitors tiverton town The summer of 1913 saw the birth of what is now Tiverton Town Football Club from the ashes of the recently demised rugby club. Honorary Secretary Sid Skinner proposed the change of code and the newly formed Tiverton Athletic played host to Exeter City at the Athletic Ground at the start of September for the inaugural match. City won 7-0 but the first Tiverton President Mr. Ford was already prepared to make the bold claim that the new team could become champions of the county. Those days were many years off, and the first season had barely been completed when war broke out and Tiverton Athletic was forced to adjourn their journey. Play resumed following the Great War and after the 1921/22 season, it was decided that a merger between Athletic and Uffculme St. Peters would take place, having been rejected the previous year. The newly formed club, known as Tiverton AFC, moved from the Tiverton & District League to the East Devon League and grabbed their first piece of major silverware by pipping Exminster to the league title. It was a championship they would retain for the following three years and the foundations of a successful local football team were well and truly in place. A string of championships and near misses followed as the club moved into the Exeter & District League before war once again stopped the majority of competitive sport. By this time there were already a number of names that would go down in Tiverton folklore, not least Frank Butler, a prolific striker who would hold the all-time goalscoring record until almost the turn of the century. When the action got underway again in 1946 the club, now with the familiar Tiverton Town moniker, relocated from a war-battered Elms Ground to their current home at Ladysmead, although they used a pub ten minutes walk from the ground for changing purposes. The early post-war years didn’t give rise to the success of the 1920s and 1930s and by the turn of the decade they were fighting off relegation with some particularly poor seasons; only the ridiculously weak St. Marks and Okehampton finishing below Town in the table in the 1949/50 season. It took more than ten years to regain some form, with much of the fifties spent languishing in mid-table, but by the time Alf Ramsay was preparing for world domination the likes of Alec Collard and Terry Lee were firing Tiverton back to the top, the club winning consecutive league championships in 1965 and 1966, and the trophy cabinet was filled out with a host of local knock-out victories. But the high road was a short one and it was only a matter of a few years before Tiverton were back in the pack and struggling both on and off the pitch. In the early 1970s, the brave decision to join the Western League was taken, and while the induction was tough the club was able to hang on through the bleak winters. The 1980/81 season was the bleakest of them all with a paltry 23 goals being scored in the league, and relegation to the Western League First Division confirmed a little more than halfway through the season. Having hit the lowest point possible by finishing bottom of the table in 1984 the only way was up and slowly the fortunes changed, thanks in no small part to the newly appointed John Owen, brought to Tiverton as a coach, but soon to take over the reins as manager. Mark Seatherton and Clive Jones provided the goals as the climb began, and the addition to the squad of Peter Rogers and Hedley Steele culminated in Town clinching promotion back to the Western League Premier Division at the end of the 1988/89 season.

Todays Visitors tiverton town Tiverton was to embark on an unprecedented twenty years of success and never found themselves outside of the top four in the Western League following promotion. Kevin Smith arrived at Ladysmead and started scoring for fun, ably assisted by John Durham and later Phil Everett, and Tivvy finally made Mr. Ford’s prediction of 78 years earlier a reality by winning the Devon Cup on penalties against cross-town rivals Elmore. Former Exeter City defender Martyn Rogers, who would go on to earn legendary status at Ladysmead, took over from John Owen in the summer of 1991 and the following season the club were runners-up to an invincible Clevedon Town and reached the FA Vase final at Wembley on the back of some staggering results against higher opposition. Forest Green Rovers were hit for six while Barton Rovers and Buckingham Town both went for four in what was by far Tivvy’s best season to date. The day out at Wembley lost a little of its silver lining as Town were defeated 1-0 by Bridlington, but by now everything was in place and the remarkable rise of a club that was in danger of extinction ten years prior was about to be completed. The Western League championship finally arrived at Ladysmead in 1994 and stayed in Tiverton the following year. By this time Tivvy had made three appearances in the first round proper of the FA Cup, playing host to Leyton Orient and having the cheek to take an early lead on the most recent occasion. But it was the FA Vase that was most coveted and having carefully assembled a squad with the belief and talent to succeed, the dream was finally realised when Tow Law Town was defeated by a single Peter Varley goal at Wembley Stadium in May 1998. Not satisfied with just one trip up the 39 steps to lift the cup Tiverton went and did it again the following year, this time getting the better of a very highly-fancied Bedlington Terriers side thanks to Scott Rogers' late, late strike. The next step was to take on the challenge of the Southern League, and after an impressive initial season, Tiverton won promotion to the Premier Division at only the second attempt. In keeping with an unwritten Tivvy tradition, the promotion came after finishing as runners-up but little did that matter on a warm and sunny day at Blakenall when the Yellows won 3-0 thanks to goals from Paul Chenoweth, Scott Rogers and Kevin Nancekivell to seal their place in the top tier of the Southern League. The step-up in class did little to temper the Yellows' appetite for success and the next two seasons saw them finish respectably in sixth and then fourth, only being denied a shot at the Conference after failing to win any of the last five games of the 2002/03 campaign. It is fair to say that the club has since struggled to maintain the air of invincibility that carried them to such great success, and the latter half of the following season saw Tiverton slump from second to fifteenth and miss out on a place in the newly structured regional sections of the Conference. The next five years saw Tivvy back in mid-table, and a particularly frustrating 2006/07 had them fighting at the wrong end of the table for much of the season, often hampered by postponed games, injuries and suspensions. The only high point was winning Southern League Cup with a fine 3-2 aggregate victory over Hemel Hempstead Town, but even that failed to disguise the fact that there needed to be a period of rebuilding if Tiverton were to take the next step up the ladder.

Todays Visitors tiverton town The culmination of half a decade of struggle came in the 2009/10 season when the club finished in the relegation zone. Tivvy were lucky to escape the drop due to off-field matters concerning other clubs across the non-league system, and in May 2010 Martyn Rogers stepped down as manager, bringing to an end a 19-season managerial tenure. Former England Under-21 captain Chris Vinnicombe was appointed in his stead but results were poor and he left the club after just four months at the helm, replaced by former Plymouth Argyle and Gillingham midfielder Mark Saunders. However, the slow start to the 2010/11 season proved decisive and Tiverton finally succumbed to relegation for only the second time in the history of the club. Tivvy steadied the ship with a comfortable mid-table finish in 2011/12, only fading away from playoff contention in the final month of the season, and after a strong start to the next campaign hopes were high, but a poor run of form saw Saunders leave the club in March 2013. Jamie Ward was appointed as his replacement until the end of the season, and in the summer of 2013 John Clarkson took over as manager and quickly went about assembling a new-look squad. The 2013/14 season was much better on the pitch with appearances in both the Southern League Cup and Devon Cup finals, while a third-place league finish saw Tiverton in the playoffs, but eventually, the club finished empty-handed, losing both finals and falling in the playoffs to eventual promotees Paulton Rovers. Clarkson himself chose not to stick around in the managerial seat, but remained involved at Director-level at the club. His departure opened the door for Rogers to return, although he was tasked with assembling a new squad with financial constraints at the fore. It was tough-going initially, and a difficult spell across the turn of the year raised questions on the validity of bringing back a legendary manager. However, the Yellows gathered themselves to finish a respectable eighth position in 2016, before winning the playoffs the following season to reclaim a place in the Southern League's top Division after an six year absence. Scott Rogers assumed the role of joint-manager alongside Martyn in 2019, and helped transform the team into genuine title contenders before the season was terminated prematurely, and the even more abrupt 2020/21 campaign saw Tivvy off to a flying start, leading the standings from the opening day, but in vain as the season was once again scrapped after just seven matches. The 2021/22 season however was not destined to reach the glitzy heights the previous years had shown. The season started with the retirement of Legendary Manager Martyn Rogers, leaving nephew Scott in sole control of the team. A difficult start and a poor run around the Christmas period led some fans to question Scott’s ability to run the team by himself, however these calls would soon be answered with Martyn coming back out of retirement and helping lead the club on a fantastic run which saw Tiverton elevate themselves away from danger and into the mid-table places.

DAVOs diary Good afternoon and a warm welcome to everyone for todays league match against Tiverton Town, we wish their players, staff and supporters a pleasant afternoon and a safe trip home afterwards. Tiverton are a well established side at step 3 now, they are a big club and one I have always had a lot of respect for, they have had some fantastic results so far this season and they have a number of players who we have played against over the years who are very good players, we will certainly need to be on our game in order to get anything from it that’s for sure! Tuesday night was a tough game against a very good Bracknell side, they will be in the play offs come the end of the season that’s for sure! A bad 20 minutes at the start of the game was our downfall despite a great free kick from Wazza found us 3-1 down, that was a mountain to climb but we gave it a good go and pulled one back but wasn’t able to force an equaliser! On the injury front we are nursing a lot after the recent tough relentless schedule, so we will have a few missing today no doubt but we are still unsure how many just yet.. we will be without Charlie after this game for his sending off, I found that incident very disappointing really bearing in mind their lad got booked for dissent 1 minute before and Charlie got a red for the exact same situation, having said that Charlie knows he can learn from that but it was extremely harsh! One final well done to our young supporters who were truly outstanding in midweek, they are showing our club in such a great light and we are so grateful for their superb noise they are making! We need more every game, so keep it going guys! Enjoy the game and let’s hope for a great performance. Up the winch!

Match Report By Malcolm Clarke

WINCHESTER CITY 2 - 3 BRACKNELL TOWN Winchester were beaten 3-2 by Bracknell in the first league match between the clubs since 2008/09. The two clubs last met in a competitive match in 2017/18 season with Winchester emerging 3-0 winners in a F A Cup tie at Bracknell. The two clubs have also previously met in six league games that have seen two Winchester victories and four draws, so this was Bracknell's first win against Winchester in a competitive match, but they are a club having something of a resurgence. Under the management of Bobby Wilkinson, they were promoted to this level of football as a result of winning the Isthmian League Division 1 title by a 20-point margin. With Wilkinson having left to join Weymouth, they have recruited the managerial duo of Carl Withers and Jamie McClurg who led Binfield into the Isthmian League. This season Bracknell are currently in mid-table, but results from their games in hand can propel them into a playoff position. They have also enjoyed an excellent F A Cup run reaching the 1st round proper of the F A cup where they will play Ipswich Town in a televised match on Monday. Winchester went into the match having won their last two league matches and the starting lineup showed four changes from that which played against Swindon Supermarine in the F A Trophy with goalkeeper Charlie Philpott, the regular full back pairing of Callum Baughan and Danny King plus midfielder Ollie Griggs all returning as first choices. Claudio Herbert, Josh Bertie and Silvano Obeng being on a substitutes bench which also included I K Hill and Robert Jamison. Winchester however fell behind after just two minutes when Liam Ferdinand set up Kamaron English to score with a low shot into the corner of the goal. However, Winchester equalized in the 11th minute when from a free kick just outside the area Warren Bentley scored with an excellently struck shot. Having obtained one win and five draws from games in which they have gone 1-0 down this season Winchester certainly had hopes that by doing likewise they would get something out of the game. Warren Bentley had an effort deflected just wide and Simba Mlambo having another goal attempt cleared off the line by Ashley Lodge and Callum Chugg following up shooting just wide, as Winchester were boosted by their equalizer. In the 18th minute though Bracknell regained the lead when English scored the second from 20 yards out and it became 3-1 a minute later when Liam Ferdinand scored with a deflected shot. This gave Winchester a mountain to climb and although in the closing minutes of the first half Warren Bentley was just off target with a header from a Jamie Barron corner, Philpott was the busier goalkeeper during the remainder of the game's first period being called into action on a couple of occasions to keep the visitors out. Early in the second half Winchester bought on Silvano Obeng for Simba Mlambo and in the 70th minute he forced an excellent save from Bracknell goalkeeper Michael Eacott who kept the ball out at the expense of a corner. Prior to that the game's second period had been a lively encounter with both teams having attacks. English came close to getting his hat-trick, but he headed Max Herbert's cross just wide. At the other end Warren Bentley forced a further save from Eacott and Max Smith shooting over when well placed. Winchester had to make two enforced substitutions with Warren Bentley and Archie Willcox having to go off injured and being replaced by Claudio Herbert and Mark Jamison respectively. There were a few minutes delay in treating Willcox, but thankfully the player was able to get back on his feet. Bracknell also made two substitutes in the latter stages of the game. In added on time Max Smith pulled a goal back with a low shot. Right at the end Winchester goalkeeper Charlie Philpott was sent off for dissent having only moments earlier gone up field for a Jamie Barron free kick as Winchester were trying to seek an equalizer and following the goalkeeper's dismissal there was barely time to start the game.

THE word ‘legend’ is a term used pretty loosely in football these days, but there aren’t many people in the Non-League game who consider Neil Cugley as anything but. Last week, the veteran boss stood down as manager of Folkestone Invicta after 26 years and 1,299 games in the dugout, making him the longest-serving manager in the top eight tiers of English football since Arsene Wenger left Arsenal in 2018. “He changed my life,” striker Ade Yusuff told us. “A lot of managers I’ve had haven’t really understood me as a player – maybe even a man, sometimes – whereas he’s allowed me to be myself. That’s helped me to flourish on the pitch under him.” Twenty six years. It can never be underestimated just what an achievement that is, especially in this day and age where managers are lucky to last 26 days before the knives come out. That, though, is where Non-League football is cut from a different cloth. Yes, there are still the odd over-reactive parting of ways but I like to think there is a genuine loyalty that high-end clubs could learn from. Cugs may have stepped away from the dugout but his heart and soul remains at Cheriton Road. His wife runs the bar and his stepson is one of the club’s biggest fans. You can bet Cugs will join them on the terraces, barking his usual instructions, on a Saturday afternoon from here on in. Cugley’s exit got me thinking about other Non-League legends from the dugout, of which there are quite a few. On the south coast alone, Tommy Killick, at Poole Town, and Dave Diaper, at Sholing FC, have been at their respective clubs for over 20 years, while Terry Brown, at the age of 70, has recently returned to the Aldershot Town dugout on an interim basis, leading the club to three straight wins on the back of Mark Molesley’s departure. You can’t buy experience like that. So, with Cugley swapping his trench coat for gardening gloves, who is the new managerial stalwart who has served his club the longest? The answer to that is Bacup Borough boss Brent Peters. Twenty-five years ago, then Borough chairman Frank Manning and co-director Graham Schofield walked into a local pub looking for help to rescue the historic club from extinction. Little did they know that the man they were talking to would still be holding that baton twenty-five years later. In a recent interview with BBC Radio Lancashire, Peters said his greatest achievement was keeping the club afloat amid difficult times with other in the Valley, like his very own beloved Rossendale United, having fallen by the wayside. “Brent Peters, in my eyes is Mr Non-League,” said club representative Steven Brown. “He cuts the grass, he does the plumbing, he changes the beer barrels, he takes out the rubbish, etc, etc. There is no job at Bacup Borough FC that this man doesn’t do. He is a machine and it’s fair to say that there would be no club without Brent Peters.” The likes of Cugley, Peters, Killick, Diaper, Brown and others are the lifeblood of their club and the Non-League game as a whole. Loyalty is everything in life in general – it’s so gratifying to see it rewarded.

WINCHESTER CITY 0 - 5 SWINDON SUPERMARINE For the sixth successive year Winchester exited the F A Trophy to former champions of the Hellenic League as Swindon Supermarine beat them 5-0 to avenge a defeat of the previous week and moved to the 2nd round of the competition. Winchester though did reach the 1stround proper of the competition for the first time in their history and are now free to concentrate on the league in which they have enjoyed some improved results in recent weeks, with their next match being at home to F A Cup heroes Bracknell Town on Tuesday night. Both Winchester and Swindon Supermarine are clubs who have established themselves as Southern League clubs in the 21st century and Swindon Supermarine is in fact a merger of Swindon Athletic (formerly Penhill) and Supermarine. Winchester made one change to the starting line-up from Monday's win at Beaconsfield, with Warren Bentley replacing I K Hill who was on a seven-man bench that also included available again Ollie Griggs and Danny King returning from injury. Early on a cross from Simba Mlambo following a good Winchester move required an important interception from the Swindon Supermarine defence, while Warren Bentley had a shot saved. At the other end Conor McDonagh came close with a lob from distance, while a free kick led to the ball going across the goal with no-one able to get a decisive touch. However, after exchanges were even early on Swindon Supermarine began to get on top and they went ahead in the 19th minute when Sam Turl's cross was headed across the goal by James Harding for Harry Williams to score at close range. Brad Hooper forced a save from Jordi Valero in the Winchester goal had to save from Brad Hooper. The second goal did come though when a free kick taken by Jamie Edge was touched on by Mat Liddiard with Conor McDonagh who had scored Swindon Supermarine's goal the previous week scoring with a diving header. Swindon Supermarine were very much on top now and dominating the midfield. Valero saved from Harry Williams at the second attempt and the visitors also had a penalty appeal turned down that it is fair to say many referees would have awarded the spot kick. Winchester went into half time 2-0 down, and although outplayed for the majority of the first half they know that if they could get one goal back, they were very much back in the contest. Early in the second half Winchester's Henry Brooks had an effort that was just over, but the remainder of the half very much belonge it was surprising they had to wait until the 70th minute for them to get the third. Before then James Harding came close a couple of times, once forcing a good save from Valero and also hitting over the cross bar when well placed. On another occasion the visitors seemed certain to score, but Conor McDonagh shot over when he appeared to be clear of the Winchester defence. The third goal did come when Harry Williams was clear of the Winchester defence, and he pushed the ball away from the Winchester goalkeeper and then able to slot the ball inti the net from close range. That goal ended any hope Winchester had of getting back into the contest and although the home team had introduced Claud Ollie Griggs, I K Hill and Callum Baughan as second half substitutes replacing Silvano Obeng, Josh Bertie and Claudio Herbert the visitors who made a triple substitution themselves were able to add two further goals with Harding following up after Williams's initial shot was saved and substitute Zack Kotwicka scoring the fifth which was set up by fellow substitute Sal Abubakar. Valero made a further save before the game was finished, but generally it was a day to forget for Winchester. Winchester are at home to Tiverton on Saturday where they will be looking to obtain their first Saturday home league win of the season and for the away match against Truro which will be played on the weekend of 19th to 20th November the club will be running a coach. Club stalwart Matt Richbell became a father for the first time when his wife gave birth to a baby girl called Grace Veronica.

Match Report By Malcolm Clarke

BEACONSFIELD TOWN 0 - 1 WINCHESTER CITY Winchester City completed a sequence of three away league games in six days with an impressive haul of seven points from these fixtures as they beat Beaconsfield Town 1-0 and moved to 12th in the league table and moved above Beaconsfield in the process. Although Beaconsfield have lost more matches than they have won this season they went into this fixture with their last four fixtures having provided two league wins and progress to the next round of the F A Trophy. Earlier in the season they beat Metropolitan Police away from home and their team against Winchester included former Winchester City player Dan Bradshaw and Sam Togwell who in addition to captaining Eastleigh in the National League has 333 football league appearances to his name, while Kyel Reid on their substitutes bench has played three matches in the Premiership for West Ham and 169 matches in the football league. The clubs had previously met in both the 2006/07 and 2008/09 seasons when the opponents were known as Beaconsfield S Y C O B with these fixtures providing three Winchester victories and one Beaconsfield victory which was a 1-0 home victory in the latter season. Since the 2003/04 campaign Beaconsfield have only spent one season outside the Southern League and this is their fifth successive season as a Southern League Premier Division club. For Winchester Jordi Valero's form in goal meant that returning goalkeeper Charlie Philpott was on the bench. I K hill and Callum Chugg who had come on as substitutes on Saturday were in the starting line-up with Mark Jamison and Warren Bentley on the bench. Bentley was initially named in the starting line-up but had to pull out in the warmup and was replaced by Simba Mlambo. In addition, Claudio Herbert came in for Callum Baughan at right back. Early on Jordi Valero made a good save to deny the home team, while at the other end Simba Mlambo forced Ravan Constable in the home goal to make a save. Beaconsfield have a goal disallowed and Jamie Barron forced Constable inro action twice, with the goalkeeper saving one effort well and stopping the other effort at the second attempt. However, the first half which was goalless was fairly even, but significantly having waited two and a half months for their first clean sheet in the first half of a league game Winchester have now achieved two within 53 hours of each other. Winchester took the lead in the 55th minute when a free kick from Jamie Barron in a dangerous position was met by Callum Chugg After the goal Winchester had to soak up some pressure from the home team. Beaconsfield were awarded a penalty which Jordi Valero saved diving to his right, they hit the post, had one effort cleared off the line and late on had a free kick in a dangerous position. However as has been the case in recent games played with great determination and manager Craig Davis thought that the team had played better in the second half than the first. He also thanked the supporters who made the trip and were in good voice. In the second half Dan Neild and Mark Jamison were introduced as second half substitutes replacing Henry Brooks and I K Hill respectively. In four appearances goalkeeper Jordi Valero has achieved clean sheets and has twice faced penalties which have resulted in him making excellent saves. Winchester's success has certainly attracted widespread praise on twitter, with Belper a club in the North of England tweeting Valero's penalty and former Alresford manager Richard Luffman now at Cribbs also supplying his congratulations.
