The first team are well into their season now, playing their seventh league game this afternoon. Meanwhile, it’s been a long summer of preparation for our 29 team Junior teams who have been training hard and participating in pre-season friendlies and tournaments. The league officially started last weekend, and despite some frantic last-minute admin, it seemed to go without a hitch.

Football at Winchester City starts early for some. Players as young as five years old can sign up to our Development Squad, a Saturday morning programme led and run by Chelsea Foundation, that focuses on football fundamentals and basic skills. Fun and friendships are our focus at this age, we want our players to enjoy playing and keeping fit, whilst making new friendships and developing some basic football skills. We have a seven-week programme which rolls throughout the season allowing new players to join at the beginning of each block.

Most of the players in our two new U7 teams have been through our development programme which has enabled them to, quite literally, hit the ground running in their first non-competitive season as officially registered players. Both teams were at Stoneham Football complex last Saturday morning for their first experience on the 3G – it was goals galore and plenty of smiles all round.

Our U7 to U10 teams play in the Eastleigh District Mini Soccer League (EDMSL), one of the biggest (and best!) junior leagues in the country. U7s currently play on a Saturday whilst the rest compete on Sundays. I popped to Stoneham to watch Tom & Reggie’s U8 Black team play Hursley and Jonny’s U9 Black team play Kings Copse on Sunday, with hundreds of juniors playing every weekend it’s run with precision, it’s very impressive to witness.

As our players move towards competitive football, we participate in the TYRO league, a Southampton league with some tough competition. We have a good balance of teams in this league, from U12s (when competitive football starts), teams are placed in divisions (usually 1-6), with promotion up for grabs and relegation the consequence of a difficult season. Our U14 Blue team, managed by Mike and Matt, have been Division 1 champions for the last two seasons, so we have our hopes pinned on the treble this season!

Of course, none of this would be possible without the huge commitment of our Managers, Assistants, Coaches and Committee. The time and effort that is put into planning, coaching, managing … not to mention the administration, is bountiful, and often overlooked. I’d like to thank you for everything you do for Winchester City FC, I know it’s not always goals and wins, for every trophy won there’s tears, losses, disappointment and frustration. As a Club we try to provide the support needed for Managers, but I also know that Managers support each other, we’re in this together!

We are always on the look out for more volunteers to help. If you have a skill that you think we could use then please do get in touch with me, Ali Henderson 07802 432796 (alihendo@me.com), thank you.

malcolms musings

We welcome Hendon to Winchester for this afternoon’s game. This will be the first league meeting between the two clubs as prior to joining the Southern league Premier Division at the start of the 2018/19 season Hendon were members of the Athenian League from 1919 to 1963 and of the Isthmian League from 1963 until joining the Southern League and in every league they have played in since then they have been in the top division if the league had more than one division. Of course Hendon were prominent in the F A Amateur Cup and in the last 10 years of this competition they appeared in three finals, winning 2 of them and this was a competition Winchester also entered

I have seen Hendon play twice, both times in the 2004/05 season against Eastleigh and they won 2-1 at the Claremont Road ground, but lost 7-1 at Eastleigh. They have now vacated Claremont Road and groundshare with Edgware Town. In fact their current name of Hendon was only adopted after the end of the second world war. Prior to that they had been known as Christchurch Hampstead, Hampstead Town, Hampstead and Golders Green.

At Clanfield (Oxon) I had the pleasure of meeting Pete Slade who played in one of their F A Amateur Cup victories and certainly the Hendon teams of that era had some of the great names of amateur football such as Rod Haider, Jimmy Quail, goalkeeper John Swannell and , Roy Sleap. It was Haider who in fact scored Hendon’s goal in an F A Cup third round tie at St James Park against Newcastle in 1974 which was drawn 1-1, although Hendon lost the replay which was played at Watfoird’s ground 4-0, with Newcastle going on to reach the F A Cup final that year before losing to Liverpool.

Hendon have played in the F A Cup 1st round several times, but only in 1969/70 and 1973/74 have they gone beyond that stage and they have never beaten a football league club in the competition. It should perhaps be pointed out that it was previously the case that being F A Amateur Cup finalists the previous year automatically guaranteed you a place in the 1st round proper of the F A Cup. They have entered the F A Trophy every year since the end of the F A Amateur Cup in 1974 and their best season was in 1998/99 when they lost to Cheltenham Town. Amongst their former players are former Southampton forwards David Speedie and Iain Dowie. In addition David Ballheimer whol writes about the club iis a well known author, who has written about the first 100 years of Hendon football club and I certainly respect people who have a passion for the heritage of football clubs.

World record breaking athlete David Bedford was a member of the Hendon board from 2004 to 2021. Bedford took part in the 1972 Olympics and is the last English competitor man to win the International Cross Country Championships, later the World Cross Country Championships

Hendon have made a slow start to this season having lost their first league games, but they hasd a comfortable F A Cup win against Potton United and Joseph White scored in three of their first five league games. They also will be keen to maintain their record of never having been relegated.

It was good to read of the ambition of the Winchester Flyers to expand and incorporate 3G artificial pitches, grass pitches, a clubhouse, changing facilities and a car park and increase from 4 to 13 hectares and to continue to offer football to girls of all abilities and ages. With the recent victory of the England Lionesses in the UEFA Women’s Championship the profile of women’s football is as high as it has ever been . I know of people who go to the length and breadth of the country to support women’s football and women’s football has come a long way in recent years and this is reflected in the increased publicity it now gets.

Last Monday the Queen’s funeral was scheduled to take place and as someone who has met the Queen Mother when she was alive and been impressed by the interest she showed I would like to thank the Queen for her devotion in fulfilling so many engagements during her 70 years as monarch. For many footballers receiving an F A Cup winners medal from royalty was one of the highlights of their playing careers.

With the Yate game postponed due to the Queen’s death and the Bracknell game needing to ,be rearranged dude to the Hampshire Senior Cup tie with Fareham this will be our first league game in nearly three weeks, although we are due to ,make the long trip to Merthyr on Tuesday. The Bracknell game has been rearranged for Tuesday November 1st

Hendon FC Todays Visitors

Hendon FC are now into their 13th season (including the two curtailed ones) under the ownership of their supporters, following their takeover of the club in the summer of 2010.

Hendon has an illustrious and proud history. The club was formed in 1908, beginning its existence as Christ Church Hampstead. In their inaugural season, the club finished as champions of the Finchley & District League Third Division. There was regular success in the early years, but not before the first of four name changes.

Ahead of the 1909–10 season, the club became Hampstead Town, and immediately won the Finchley & District League Second Division title, and the First Division title followed a year later. Further successes followed as the club gained senior status in 1912 (entering the FA and county cups for the first time) and competing in both the London and Middlesex Leagues. On the back of this, the club was elected into the Athenian League in 1914, one of the best competitions in amateur football, this just six years into the club’s existence.

Hampstead Town had played only two matches in 1914–15 (both away draws) when season was abandoned because of the outbreak of war. In their eventual debut season, 1919–20, the club finished a highly creditable fourth. The club finished runners-up in 1929, 1933, 1948, 1949 and 1952, before eventually winning the title in 1953. Further titles followed in 1956 and 1961.

The second renaming of the club came in 1926, when the suffix Town was dropped, and the club was simply called Hampstead. Seven years later the club became Golders Green and the final change came in 1946 when the club took the name Hendon.

There had been another Hendon club – it reached the quarter-finals of the FA Cup in 1883 – and, in 1932, Hendon and Hampstead met in two friendlies, the second of which was to raise funds for the former club. Sadly, Hendon – which appeared to add and drop the Town suffix in their dying years – ceased to exist a couple of years later, but their continued existence meant Hampstead had been unable to take the name in 1933. It was as Golders Green that the club made its first appearance in the FA Cup competition proper, losing in the first round to Southend United in 1933 34.

In 1963, after more than half a dozen rejections in the previous 50 years, the club was accepted into the Isthmian League and the Greens were members for 55 seasons, always competing in the top division. Success continued as they finished runners-up in their first season, followed by the first of two league titles a year later. Hendon were again champions in 1973, adding to their runners-up achievements in 1966, 1974 and 2015. Indeed, in their first 11 seasons in the Isthmian League, Hendon never finished lower than sixth. Since then, the club has had both good and bad seasons in the League, the low point coming in 2006 when the Greens were reprieved from relegation due to another club’s financial misfortune.

Hendon FC Todays Visitors

During the amateur era, the club reached the final of the FA Amateur Cup on five occasions, winning in 1960 (against Kingstonian), 1965 (against Whitley Bay) and 1972 (against Enfield) but losing in 1955 (against Bishop Auckland) and 1966 (against Wealdstone).

The club throughout its history has enjoyed FA Cup success. As well as 21 appearances in the first round (most recently at Aldershot Town in 2012), there have been six appearances in the second round (latterly in 1999–2000 at Blackpool) and one in the third round in January 1974 which saw the Greens draw 1–1 at Newcastle United before losing the replay 4–0 at Watford FC’s Vicarage Road.

The club has also enjoyed much glory in county cups, winning the Middlesex Senior Cup no less than 16 times out of 28 final appearances, as well as winning the Middlesex Charity Cup 14 times (two of which, in 1945 and 1988, were at Wembley Stadium). The London Senior Cup has been won on six occasions, with a further 10 appearances in the final. The 16 London finals is the competition record.

Hampstead moved into its Claremont Road ground in 1926, the first game being an FA Cup tie against Berkhamsted Town 18 September, which Hendon won 4–3. The final match was played 82 years later, almost to the day, on 20 September 2008, when local rivals Wealdstone won 4–1 (Hendon’s last goal at Claremont Road came from Dave Diedhiou, who would make 382 appearances and score 43 goals).

After leaving Claremont Road, Hendon spent four years ground-sharing with Wembley FC and, from 2013, a three-season arrangement with Harrow Borough FC at Earlsmead. In February 2014, plans moved to return close to the London Borough of Barnet at the old Kingsbury Town FC ground, Silver Jubilee Park (the borough boundary is around 20 metres behind the clubhouse). It boasted an all-weather surface, with a second, much improved one, laid in summer 2022 and this allowed the ground owners to redevelop the stadium, with Hendon sharing with Edgware Town.

In 2014, Hendon relaunched their youth section, with 15 sides taking the field. This youth policy paid dividends after as a number of players have moved up from the youth team to the senior side and one, Keagan Cole, aged 18, became the youngest ever Hendon player to complete 100 first team appearances (17 goals). In 2016–17, Hendon added girls’ teams to boys’ youth teams.

Hendon’s were able to move into Silver Jubilee Park in 2016 but it took until January 2017 for a first home League win to be achieved. A last-day draw, completing a run of 22 points from 10 games, saw the club avoid relegation. The 2017–18 season was nearly glorious. Led by the prolific 92-goal attack of Niko Muir (40 goals – first in 19 years), Zak Joseph (18), Ashley Nathaniel-George (17) and Josh Walker (17), Hendon roared to third place in the Isthmian League – a second top-three finish in four seasons – and reached the playoff final. Sadly, it was not to be as

Dulwich Hamlet won a penalty shoot out.

A new era dawned in summer 2018 as The Football Association announced that Hendon would be playing in the Southern League Premier Division South, the Greens’ first League change since 1963. An even bigger change came as manager Gary McCann, his coaching staff and every senior player moved on to pastures new. Hendon made a great start to their new competition and were second in December, but a long losing run saw them narrowly avoid relegation in spring 2019. The Greens made a slow start to the new season and, in November, manager Jimmy Gray departed, being replaced by Biggleswade Town boss Lee Allinson.

Lee, whose father Ian played for Arsenal and now manages St Albans City, was a talented midfielder who started his playing career at Watford and went on to play for Harlow Town, Barton Rovers, Enfield, Stotfold, Borehamwood, Arlesey Town and Biggleswade Town before becoming assistant manager, then manager there. An experienced coach, he – with his wife Faye – runs his own coaching academy, based at Silver Jubilee Park. The pandemic means that 2022–23 will be Lee’s second full season as Hendon boss. The highlight of his time as Hendon manager was London Senior Cup triumph over Brentford B in September 2020, and the same teams met in the 2022 final with the Premier League club triumphing after a penalty shoot-out.

DAVOs diary The Citizens Post

Good afternoon and a warm welcome to everyone for today’s important league fixture against Hendon. I wish their players, management and staff a pleasant afternoon and a safe trip home afterwards.

Hendon come into the game after winning 3 games in a row. We watched them and they were very impressive going forward and will be climbing the league quickly that’s for sure, so we will need to be at the top of our game to get the result we want!

Last weekend the FA cup loss to Weymouth was disappointing. For me, we just didn’t get going like we could, they are a league higher and had the boost of a new manager that week. However, I really didn’t think there was much between the sides. A disastrous start gave us too much to do, although we had a lot of the game and gave it a push, I just feel a bit like we missed an opportunity as they were there for the taking really so that’s a real shame that we didn’t do that.

Player news, we come into today with a virtually clean bill of health, IK Hill being the only player missing, he did have a good week training this week though and so his comeback is imminent! We have worked hard this week and will push ourselves hard to play to the level we are capable of, there is no doubt in my mind that our very best football will win us a lot of games this season, the key is getting them performances and let’s hope today is a good day for us, we will need the loud and proud support and so please do keep inspiring the lads.

Enjoy the game and give us as much energy as possible, we can do that together and get a run together!

Match Report

WINCHESTER CITY 1 - 3 WEYMOUTH TOWN

Winchester City went out of the F A Cup losing 3 1 to a Weymouth side who play in the National League South. However, although Weymouth have made a disappointing start to this season, they replaced David Oldfield with Bobby Wilkinson as manager this week, with Wilkinson having achieved promotions with both Hungerford Town and Bracknell Town.

Weymouth have since the formation of the National League spent a total of 15 seasons in the top division of non-league football including last season, and the club have done well to bounce back after 10 years ago struggling to avoid relegation from the Southern League Premier Division. They have also reached the 3rd round proper of the F A Cup on three occasions and have good travelling support who added the atmosphere in a crowd of 502, which helped provide additional revenue for Winchester whose bar staff, catering staff and stewards worked tirelessly behind the scenes

The match started with a minute's silence in aid of the Queen and the front page of the match programme included a lovely tribute describing the Royal Family's involvement booth in football and sport as a whole and stating the wonderful words of encouragement she gave to the successful Lionesses team. Manager Craig Davis also deserves praise for his comments on the late Queen despite obviously being disappointed at losing the away Yate fixture, which means another midweek away fixture, and as a result which adds to the discrepancy in overall travelling distances for Winchester's home and away midweek league fixtures.

Winchester made one change to the starting line up from the last round of the F A Cup with Luke King replacing Claudio Herbert who was one of Winchester's seven substitutes, with positional changes also made as a result.

There was not much action in the first 10 minutes, but in the 11th minute Weymouth took the lead when Keelan McConnell set up Harry Kyprianou whose lob took a deflection past Winchester's goalkeeper Charlie Philpott. Winchester's situation was worsened when they conceded two penalties in four minutes, the second for a foul on Kyprianou The first penalty was converted by Bradley Ash and the second by former Grimsby Town striker Akheem Rose.

To be three goals down after 19 minutes left Winchester with a mountain to climb, but to their credit they kept battling, and in the 28th minute Silvano Obeng pulled a goal back when he got on the end of a well taken Jamie Barron free kick. Winchester tried hard to build on the momentum of the goal, but the nearest we came to a further goal in the first half was when Tom Blair formerly of Eastleigh forced Archie Willcox to clear off the line and when Bradley Ash was narrowly off target.

Weymouth had a couple of off targets early in the second half, but on the hour mark Claudio Herbert who had come on for Alex MacAllister in the second half had a shot which Weymouth goalkeeper Ryan Sandford initially dropped but was able to retrieve the ball on the goal lune.

For the remainder of the game Winchester applied a lot of pressure, forced several corners and forced Weymouth to defend deeply on several occasions, but hard as they tried and certainly, they gave it their all they could not score a second goal which would have meant an interesting finale to the match. In added on time Charlie Philpott made a good save, having also saved from Tom Bearwish in the 79th minute.

In the second half Winchester also introduced Henry Brooks and Josh Bertie as substitutes replacing Luke King and Mark Jamison respectively

Winchester are at home to Hendon on Saturday and on the following Tuesday away to Merthyr. On Saturday 1st October Winchester were due to travel to play Plymouth Parkway, but their scheduled opponents will be in F A Cup action on that day.
