We would like to offer a warm welcome to the players, officials, staff and supporters that have made the journey up the M27 tonight. We hope you have an enjoyable evening and a safe journey home.

Archie Willcox joined City from Fareham Town this summer and will be looking forward to lining-up against his former club tonight.

Good Evening and welcome to the Charters Community Stadium for this evening’s Hampshire Senior Cup Second Round tie between Winchester City and Fareham Town.

Everyone connected at Winchester City FC shares their deepest condolences and thoughts with the Royal Family during this difficult time.

Elsewhere, there has been little activity on the pitch with City’s U23s game with AFC Hiltingbury postponed last Thursday due to a waterlogged pitch and the weekends’ football was all called off as a mark of respect for the passing of Her Majesty Queen Victoria II.

Fareham travel to WCFC after wins in the Preliminary Round at Romsey Town and in the First Round at home to Alton so the Creeksiders will be full of confidence having also not conceded in this competition yet this season. Fareham are also currently third in the Wessex Premier League, closely following AFC Portchester and the league leaders, Bemerton Heath Harlequins, so they travel to the former capital in a rich vein of form.

Enjoy the game this evening and get behind the team and let’s hope we can celebrate securing a spot in the Third Round.

Fareham though have won this competition four times, the most recent in 1993, with their most recent appearance in the final coming when they lost to Farnborough in 2003/04. In that year under the management of Jon Gittens they beat Eastleigh who were at the time a strong Southern League club 2-1 on aggregate despite losing the first leg 1-0 at home. Fareham have also performed well in other cup competitions. In 1986/87 they reached the semi finals of the F A Trophy in 1986/87 and have on four occasions reached the 1st round proper of the F A Cup, although since entering the F A Vase they have never got beyond the third round proper. Their F A Trophy achievement in 1986/87 was particularly meritorious as they beat Scarborough and Barnet who were the top two clubs in the National League that season away from home, before losing to Kidderminster Harriers in the semi final despite drawing the first leg 0-0 ,at Kidderminster. The second leg which was switched to Fareham saw Kidderminster emerge 2-0 winners.

were also Hampshire League Division 1 champions eight times from 1959/60 to 1974/75 and have also been runners up six times

It is good to see some new bar staff and stewards at the club in recent games,. Having been promoted to this level the need for volunteers is greater and it has certainly good to see Berth join Ali, Hannah, Eloise (I hope I have spelt her name correctly) and others in the team behind the bar. It is also interesting to hear Matt Richbell’s post march interviews with Winchester manager Craig Davis and some Winchester players

With some people associated with Winchester City also being Bournemouth fans it is perhaps interesting to ,reflect on Fareham’s F A Cup tie at Dean Court which the home team won 7-2. At that stage there were only three divisions difference between the teams (There is now eight), although Bournemouth under the management of Harry Redknapp with Jimmy Gabriel another person with strong South coast associations as his Assistant. David Puckett whom some people also remember from his Southampton days and for the fact that last season he played for the Southampton Legends on this ground scored a hat-trick for Bournemouth in this game. Puckett later made history by becoming at the age of 53 the oldest player to score in a Wessex League game.

In the 1988/89 F A Cup 1st round Fareham led Torquay United who were then a football league club 2-0 away from home, before two late goals earned the Devon club a replay which they won. That season Fareham were desperately unlucky to be relegated from the Southern League Premier Division despite gaining 51 points from 42 league games. Fareham in fact spent seven seasons as a Southern league Premier Division club, starting in 1982/83 when in addition to the Midland and South divisions the league introduced a Premier Division in addition, and as a result of fifth the previous season Fareham qualified to play it. However after they were relegated in 1988/89 they never returned to play it and in 1997/98 decided to drop down to the Wessex League for financial reasons and they have remained there ever Fsince.areham

However it is worth pointing out that we have twice reached the final of this competition in the 21st century beating Aldershot Town in the 2005 final and losing to Havant and Waterlooville on penalties in the 2016 final, We also won the competition in 1931, beating Andover in the final

Fareham’s appearances in the 1st round proper of the F A Cup have been in 1979/80, 1985/86, 1986/87 and 1988/89 with their interest in the competition being respectively ended by Merthyr Tydfil, Maidstone United, Bournemouth and Torquay United with the last two named being football league clubs.

We welcome Fareham to Winchester for today’s Hampshire Senior Cup tie. To reach this stage of the competition Fareham beat Romsey Town and Alton, while we had a bye to the second round.

malcolms musings

We have played against Fareham several times in the Hampshire and Wessex Leagues, but not in the Southern League as although Fareham played in the Southern League from 1979/80 to 1997/980 this did not coincide with Winchester’s membership of the Southern League. The teams last met in league action in 2014/15, but that season was Fareham’s worst as a Wessex League club and they eventually finished third from bottom, while Winchester were finished runners up and won both league games between the clubs comfortably

Today’s match replaces the home league fixture against Bracknell in the fixture list. At the time of writing this no date has been set for the rearranged fixture, but I am sure that when it is people will be notified in good time.

There are newspaper records going back to the very early days where the club applied to the local authority to move to a purpose built sport stadium here at Cams Alders in 1946, but it wasn’t until 1975 that the club moved to Cams, and we joined the Southern League in 1979 gaining promotion to the Premier Division in 1982. In 1989 despite achieving 51 points we were relegated from the Premier Division – still a record for a relegated club at step 3.

We have reached the semi-final of the FA Trophy in 1986/87 before losing 2-0 on aggregate to the eventual winners Kidderminster Harriers.

There has been organised football in Fareham since the 1880’s, but Fareham Town Football Club in its present form was formed in 1946 from an amalgamation of three local clubs.

During our time in the Hampshire League the club won every honour within the County – the League on eight occasions including five consecutive seasons from 1962/3 to 1967/8, the Hampshire Senior Cup was claimed three times and every other County Cup once. A successful Sunday side, the Fareham Centipedes, won the FA Sunday Cup in 1974.

In 1998 the club for financial reasons, made the at the time, controversial decision to play at a lower level and joined the Wessex League Premier Division where we have remained to the present day.

The club have reached the FA Cup First Round Proper on four occasions, the last occasion being in 1988 when after holding Torquay United to a 2-2 draw at Plainmoor, we were defeated 3-2 in the replay at Cams.

During the run to the semi-final stage Conference Clubs Scarborough and Barnet were both beaten on their own grounds and these two went on to top the Conference table at the end of the season.

The club’s last major honour was a shock defeat of odds-on favourites Farnborough Town to win the Hampshire Senior Cup in 1993.

The new club played initially at Beaconsfield Meadow (now housing) before moving to Bath Lane and progressed from the Portsmouth Senior League to the Hampshire League, reaching the First Division of the latter in 1953.

Under then manager Pete Stiles the club stabilized both on and off the pitch and is looking ahead to the future with optimism and excitement and becoming a pivotal pillar of the community in the Borough of Fareham. A new committee off the pitch has seen several new local businesses come on board as sponsors, whilst former Arsenal and England international Graham Rix has taken over as manager of the first Weteam.have

Enjoy tonight’s game and let’s hope for a positive performance which we will need in order to get the result we want.

I cannot let any notes go past without showing my respect to the loss of our Queen this week, it goes without saying that we offer our heartfelt condolences to all of the family and loved ones, she was held in such high esteem and carried her duties with grace and dignity and it’s a very sad loss.

Up the Winch! Davo

The Citizens Post

Players wise we have so many that have been carrying knocks and injured, most are getting closer to full fitness and competition for places will be very high, that makes tonight’s game even more important for the lads who have the opportunity to play, as I always say they need to make every minute of training and matches matter and not waste anything or they will be losing their place with the level of competition for their shirts.

DAVOs diary

Good evening and a warm welcome to everyone for this evenings Hampshire Senior Cup match against Fareham Town, we wish their players, staff and supporters a pleasant evening and safe trip home afterwards.

For us the last week or so has been frustrating with the game being called off (understandably) after having won comfortably at Baffins the previous weekend, we have trained hard though and with 2 cup games this week it’s an exciting time for us and we are looking forward to it, tonight’s game followed by Weymouth at home on Saturday, that’s the sort of game that these lads will relish and we look forward to both games this week.

Fareham come into tonight’s game in fine form having won a lot of games in a row and scoring goals for fun, they will be full of confidence and eager to put one over on us, we will have to be on our game in order to get a result and a safe passage into the next round. Archie Wilcox who had started life very well for us will be a familiar face to them having left them to come to us, hopefully he can put in another performance like the ones that have impressed so much since stepping up from the Wessex league.

Metropolitan Police took the lead in the 4th minute when Harry Taylor headed home Daniel Carr's cross from the right. Charlie Philpott in the Winchester goal has to make a save from Didi Ndombe, but Winchester come close to drawing level when Silvano Obeng's deflected shot was heading towards the goal until it was cleared off the line by Luke Robertson. Ndombe and new signing Kader had efforts just over the cross bar for the visitors, but right on half time Winchester drew level when Simba Mlambo and Silvano Obeng combined to set up Alex MacAllister who was able to score at close range and ensure that Winchester went into the half time break with the scores level.

the second half Winchester introduced Dan Jones and Henry Brooks as substitutes and they respectively replaced Claudio Herbert and Silvano Obeng Metropolitan Police also made two second half substitutionsManagerCraig

WINCHESTER CITY 1 - 1 METROPOLITAN POLICE

Metropolitan Police had won 2 and lost 2 of their 4 league games prior to Saturday's encounter and had scored 2 goals in all of these four games and had just signed striker Soul Kader who went straight into their starting line-up on a months loan from Bromley. It was therefore great credit to Winchester's reshuffled defence which with Jack Torniainen still injured, Archie Wilcox suspended and Luke King unavailable that they became the first team to concede fewer than two goals against them this season.

Match Report

Winchester obtained their first home point as a Southern Premier League club and made it 5 points from 5 games with all these 5 earned points coming in games where they fell behind in the first quarter of an hour and drew level later in the first half.

and Metropolitan Police had only previously met in a league game in the seasons of 1971/72 and 1972/73 when both clubs were getting their first taste of Southern League football, Metropolitan Police have spent most of the subsequent time as an Isthmian League club, but since transferring to the Premier Division of the Southern League they have reached the playoffs in both completed seasons.

Davis acknowledged the fighting spirit of his players in coming from behind to earn a point especially in light of the players they were missing, and felt that the second half performance was better than the first

Early in the second half Charlie Philpott made an excellent fingertip save in tipping an effort from Ndombe onto the crossbar and the visitors also had a goal disallowed for offside.
