WINCHESTER CITY Football Club £2 Metropolitan PoliceT3.00pmheCitizens Post Saturday August 27th 2022 THE CHARTERS COMMUNITY STADIUM Southern League Premier South

The FA’s expectations are entirely reasonable: spectators should conduct themselves in an orderly fashion, not using offensive, improper, violent, threatening, abusive, indecent, insulting or provocative language. Missiles or other objects shouldn’t be thrown onto the pitch or anywhere, spectators shouldn’t encroach on the pitch, and discrimination of any kind is unacceptable … it’s all common sense and basic manners.
The consequences of, frankly, being an idiot, not only falls on the individual but more importantly on the Club. Financial penalties or the closure of the Stadium for a number of matches (i.e., playing behind closed doors) would be hugely detrimental to Winchester City FC. We know we have the best supporters in Hampshire, and we’re proud of the Club’s welcoming and friendly reputation so we want to ensure the Charters Stadium continues to be a safe and fun place to be around. Do your bit by regulating your behaviour, be conscious of others around you and protect yourself and the Club from unwelcomed sanctions. Which brings me to my last point. A huge thank you to our wonderful stewards, our peacekeepers: Ronnie, Dave, Scott, Chris, Ally and Pat who do a wonderful job and are committed to ensuring everyone has a great time. Thanks for volunteering your time; you all rock a hi-vis! If you’d like to get involved in stewarding then do get in touch (alihendo@me.com), in return for your time and energy you’ll receive a season ticket, a free drink at the bar every match day and 50% off at the burger van.
Spotlight: DO YOUR BIT The Citizens Post
Following on from my post about Respect last weekend, a timely email from the FA was distributed to all grassroots clubs on the regulation of spectator misconduct. I’ll save you from reading the rules (you’re welcome) but wanted to note down some highlights.
In a nutshell, there has been a notable increase in spectator misconduct since Covid which, understandably, the FA wants to tackle head on by tightening the rules and increasing sanctions for individuals and Clubs that don’t align themselves with their expectations.

With the majority of our players having limited if any experience at this level of football and with several new players coming to the club it will not be easy for us in the early weeks of this season, but some of the players that helped us get promotion last season had come from a lower level and had improved as the season progressed, which is what we are aiming to achieve this time around as well
During their spell in the Isthmian League Metropolitan Police were twice relegated from Division 1 to Division 2, but eventually made their way from Division 2 to the Premier Division where they spent seven seasons before transferring to the Southern League where in both their completed seasons they have reached the playoffs They have four times reached the 1st round proper of the F A Cup and in 1989/90 reached the 2nd round proper of the F A Trophy where they lost to Barrow.
We welcome Metropolitan Police to Winchester for today’s league game. This match was due to be played at Metropolitan Police’s Imber Court venue, but this was unavailable meaning that the venues for the two games against them were switched meaning that we visit their ground on 7th January assuming neither club is involved in the 3rd round proper of the FA Cup. Today is the first competitive fixture between the clubs for 50 years with both teams joining the Southern League in 191/72 with Metropolitan Police joining from the aptly named Metropolitan League which they had spent 11 seasons in and Winchester joining from the Hampshire League. However whereas Metropolitan Police spent six seasons in this spell as a Southern League club before joining the Isthmian League where they would spend 42 seasons before rejoining the Southern League, we were in this league for two seasons before returning to the Hampshire League.
The Citizens Post
Our results in the two seasons in which we played Metropolitan Police are Winchester scores first 1971/72 H5-3 A0-4, 1972/73 H1-1 A0-2. However today represents their first visit to this ground as in the 1970’s we played at Airlie Road. It is good that having first played them in the lower division of the Southern League we are now meeting as Premier Division clubs.
One of Metropolitan Police’s former players is Richard Pacquette. It never ceases to amaze me how many clubs Pacquette and his cousin Jefferson Louis who played international football together for Domenica have played for during their careers. Louis last season at the age of 43 scored two stoppage time goals to help North Leigh win their playoff final and with it promotion to this division and he has played for 41 clubs in 26 years. Pacqjuette is probably best known for scoring the opening goal in Havant and Waterlooville’s F A Cup tie against Liverpool at Anfield in 2008.
Amongst Metropolitan Police’s former managers is goalkeeper Vic Rouse who made 300 football league appearances and won one full cap for Wales, and John Cottam who began his football league career as a centre back with Nottingham Forest in the top flight of English football
Metropolitan Police also reached the quarter finals of the F A Amateur Cup in 1930/31 where they lost to eventual winners Wycombe Wanderers and the semi finals in 1933/34 when they again lost to eventual winners in Dulwich Hamlet For those of you unfamiliar with the F A Amateur Cup iit used to be the leading cup for amateurs until it was abolished at the start of the 1974/75 to make way for the F A Vase when non-league football no longer made the distinction between professionals and amateurs
The only time I have seen a Metropolitan Police team was when they beat Eastleigh in a 4th round F A Vase tie which they won 3 1 on the way to the quarter finals where they were beaten by Belper Town. Metropolitan Police in fact only entered the F A Vase 13 times, but in the first 11 of these they not only reached the quarter finals, but they reached the fifth round proper on two other occasions. In these two other 5th round appearances took place in 1991/92 and 1999/00 their interest in the competition was ended respectively by Diss Town and Deal Town with Deal achieving their success in the year in which they beat Metropolitan Police.
I would like to thank the Merthyr fans for their great support at our opening game of the season against Poole. It must be frustrating that after leaving early in the morning to see your team play, when having travelled the majority of the journey events conspire to prevent you from doing so, but they played a significant part in creating the atmosphere at our game for which I thank them very much.

Ninety years later, in 1919, the Metropolitan Police Football Club was formed, playing friendly matches until joining the Spartan League in 1928. Apart from the war years (1939-45), the club remained in that competition until 1960. During that time the Blues were League Champions eight times, runners-up once and League Cup winners once In 1960 the Blues joined the Metropolitan League, winning the League Cup in 1969 In 1971 the Blues were accepted into the Southern League and played in Division South until 1977, under Team Manager Vic Rouse, the former Wales and Crystal Palace goalkeeper. In 1977, the Blues moved to the Isthmian League, becoming one of the founder members of the restructured Division Two A successful first season (1977/78) resulted in the club finishing runners up to Epsom & Ewell and being promoted to Division One. In Season 1981/82 the club finished 3rd in Division One, missing promotion by just two points. However, fortunes changed and in 1984/5, as a result of finishing third from the bottom, the Blues were relegated to Division Two (South). Ironically, in that 1984/5 season the Blues enjoyed their best run in the F.A. Cup, reaching the First Round Proper. The home tie against Dartford was subsequently featured on the BBC's "Match of the Day" programme. Defeat against Dartford was followed by a run of defeats in the league, which saw the Blues drop into one of the four relegation places introduced that season. On retur ning to Division Two (South) the Blues finished 7th in both 1985/6 and 1986/7. During 1987/88 the Blues led the Division Two (South) table in January by seven points but they were overhauled by Chalfont St Peter, who won their last two games of season and became champions by just one point The Blues were runners-up by virtue of a one-goal difference over Dorking It was a nail biting finish to a season in which the Blues lost just two league matches, both away.
On 6th July 1829, Sir Robert Peel formed the Metropolitan Police, the first organised Police Force in the world, with an office overlooking the Thames at Whitehall known as Scotland Yard, a name that has become famous throughout the world, and also became synonymous with the Metropolitan Police.
The next two seasons saw the club finish in mid table in Division One but in 1990/1 the club finished second from bottom and were relegated into the newly formed Division Two of the restructured Diadora (Isthmian) League. The club remained in Division Two for several years, always finishing in the top half but just outside the promotion positions. In 1993/4 the Blues again reached the First Round Proper of the F.A. Cup, losing 2:0 to Crawley Town. Season 1994/5 saw the club celebrate its 75th Anniversary with a game against the Army and the opening of a new grandstand at Imber Court. The Blues finished in 5th position in Division

Two and ended the season with a thrilling victory in the Carlsberg Trophy, defeating Collier Row in a penalty shoot out following a 1:1 draw after extra time.
In 2009/10 the Blues won the London Senior Cup for the first time in the club’s history, beating AFC Wimbledon in an exciting final, 4:3 on penalties, after the match ended 4:4 after extra time.The2010/11 season proved to be the most exciting in the club’s history, culminating in the club winning the Ryman League Division 1 South Championship by the narrow margin of one goal. Bognor Regis Town had a 2 point advantage during the latter stages of the season and that was the situation when the clubs lined up for the final match Bognor were held to an unexpected draw by Chatham Town and with the Met managing to scramble a 1:0 win against Merstham, it was enough to win the title with a goal difference of 61 against Bognor’s 60
During the next few seasons the club continued to finish in the top half of Division Two and in 1999/2000 reached the 5th Round of the F A Vase (last 8), losing to the eventual winners Deal Town.Throughout the first decade of the 2000s the club were mainly in and around the play-offs but were frustratingly defeated each time in the semis or the finals.

In the 2018/19 season due to FA restructuring, we were moved from the Bostik league to the Souther n League which led to the departure of our long serving manager Jim Cooper, a number of players and also greatly increased travelling costs Gavin Macpherson was appoint ed manager with Jon Nurse as his assistant and they gave youth a chance which they took with both hands playing outstanding football and commitment to finish 3rd in the league and then beating Salisbury and Poole Town in the play offs. We then had to play a super play off final against Tonbridge Angels winners of the Bostik league play off for promotion to the National league South, unfortunately we lost 3-2 aet The club had a tremendous run in the FA Cup reaching the 1st Round proper where we lost to AFC Newport County of League 2 The Blues also won the Surrey Senior Cup beating Tooting and Mitcham 2-0 in the final.
The seasons of 2019/20 & 2020/21 were both curtailed early due to the Covid 19 pandemic but 2021/2022 proved to be yet another enthralling campaign, eventually finishing 4th in the league, the clubs highest ever final position, and were in the hunt for the title until the final few games of the season We were eventually beaten 2-1 A E T in the play-off semi-final by Far nborough who went on to be promoted after winning the final.

Good afternoon and a warm welcome to you all for this afternoon’s league match against Met Police. I wish their players, staff and supporters a pleasant afternoon and safe trip back home afterwards.
Last weekend was a tough one to take, a loss against top of the league Truro 3-1 looks fairly routine, however they were in a tough game there is no doubt about it, some refereeing decisions to not only send off a player through mistaken identity, then to not 2nd book their GK to send him off late in the game whilst we were pushing hard was very disappointing, however our display in the game was the most pleasing thing, we played some fantastic stuff and whilst we didn’t make the most of that, it has left the group in no doubt that they can compete at this level!
Player wise we are in a tough spot with suspension and injury as well as some unavailability over the bank holiday weekend, this leaves todays squad being tricky, we will make sure that whoever is playing is going to be a group that gives everything and tries to play football the right way, then we will see what we can do! Get behind the lads, I know you will all be used to seeing us rattling in goal after goal at home for the last few years, it’s a tough season to try and find our feet at this level we will need you guys to push us on!! Enjoy the game! Up the Winch! Davo

Met Police are a very good and well established side at this level, losing in the play offs last season, they are well fancied to do well this season, they have had a mixed start compared to them expectations but beating Hayes and Yeading shows just how good they are and I have no doubt they will be right up there come the end of the season, with that in mind we know we are in for another extremely tough game at home!

Early in the second half Dan King made a goal line clearance from Danny King as Harrow Borough started the second half brighter than they did the first. However in a second half in which both teams used all three substitutions with Henry Brooks, Connal Bark and Josh Bertie coming on for Claudio Herbert, Jack Torniainen and ALex MacAllister both teams had chances to score the all important second goal with Max Smith forcing Harrow goalkeeper Jacob Knightbridge to make a good save. However despite seven minutes the deadlock could not be broken Tornianen as did home captain Shaun Preddie had to go off injured Winchester have now turn their attentions to Tuesday's away game at North Leigh and Saturday's home game against Truro There is no doubt though that Harrow Borough are an established club at this level having been members of the Premier Division of either the Isthmian League or Southern League since 1979/80, being Isthmian League champions in 1983/84 They have also reached the 2nd round proper of the F A Cup once and the 1st round proper four times. In last season's competition they beat Welling United and Chelmsford City of the National League South before losing 1 0 to Portsmouth in the 1st round proper, with Saturday's scorer Moore being denied by an excellent second half save from Gavin Bazunu who now plays for Southampton
The two clubs had previously met in an F A Cup 3rd qualifying tie at Harrow Borough's ground in the 2016/17 season when after Howard Neighbour had given Winchester late goals by Shaun Preddie and Ibrahim Meite gave Harrow the tie. Preddie was in Harrow's starting line-up on Saturday, while Meite later played in the football league for Cardiff and Crawley Winchester were without Warren Bentley and IK Hill both injured and with Simba Mlambo also still injured gave starting berths to Alex MacAllister andD an Neild while on the bench were Dan Jones and substitute goalkeeper Jordi Valero, with the bench otherwise unchanged from the previous Saturday.
HARROW BOROUGH 1 - 1
Winchester made a bright start to the game with Alex MacAllister having an effort blocked and Silvano Obeng shooting narrowly wide. It was certainly against the run of play when George Moore opened the scoring in the 12th minute, scoring with an excellent strike, . Winchester did well to stop a second goal going in following a James Taylor header shortly afterwards. but only four minutes after going behind they were level when Obeng scored after turning well and shooting into the roof of the net.
Winchester City obtained their first ever point in the Southern League Premier Division and score their first ever goal in the competition as they drew 1 1 in hot weather conditions in North West London. Afterwards manager Craig Davis described the result as a decent point on the road in a hard fought game that could have gone either way and he was proud of the efforts of the players. He was also full of praise for Mike Carter, Pete Millard, Marc Cole and Warren Bentley, with the last named being ruled out through injury for providing ice boxes, towels and water to keep everyone as cool and as hydrated possible and drinks breaks were also a feature of the game.

Match Report
During the remainder of the first half Claudio Herbert and Alex MacALlister had shots saved and Obeng had one effort narrowly wide and he had the ball in the net on another occasion with the goal disallowed for offside. Harrow Borough though certainly had their attacking moments and at the end of the first half Charlie Philpott made a good save from a long range free kick by Moore who was a danger throughout.

Winchester made two changes to starting line up from Saturday with Warren Bentley returning ti the side with Dan Neild dropping to the bench and Connal Bark coming in a right back for the injured Jack Tornianen. The other change saw Luke King on th4e substitutes bench dench for the first time this season.
Winchester City made the midweek trip to North Leigh and came from 1 0 behind to achieve a splendid 4 2 win which represented their first ever league win as a step 3 club It was their third win in five visits to North leigh's ground, a club who were also promoted ti the Southern League Premier Division via the playoffs last season North Leigh though were last season promoted from the Southern League Central Division despite finishing fifth, benefitting from Welwyn Garden City's ineligibility for the playoffs, but North leigh are in their 15th season of Southern League football and have only twice finished in the lower half of the table.

Match Report
North Leigh made a bright start with Ben Brown heading against the cross bar following a corner from James Dobson's through ball that sets up Levi Steele for the opening goal in the 12th minute, Winchester however come more into the game and Warren Bentley sets up Max Smith whose effort is saved and the same combination sees Smith level the scores. Charlie Philpott then makes an excellent save to deny Dobson and keep the scores level. However Winchester turned the game on its' head with two goals right at the end of the half. A beautifully struck effort from Bentley puts them ahead and then Alex MacAllister heads home following a corner taken by Jamie Barron. For the earlier part of the second half most of the shots were either comfortably dealt with by the opposing goalkeeper or off target However Winchester score a fourth in the 70th minute when an effort from Claudio Herbert hits the woodwork and is deflected in. Two minutes later North Leigh pull a goal back when Steele scores his second after being put through. North Leigh then have a good spell of play, but Winchester maintain their two goal lead, although an excellent run by Roger James creates a chance for the home side, although the effort goes wide Right at the end Max Smith has an effort that is yipped onto the post by the home goalkeeper IN the second half Winchester introduce all three substitutes with Dan Neild, Luke King and Josh Bertie the players going on to respectively replace Bentley, MacALLIster and Herbert with the replaced platers all having scored goals in the game, but in the end it is a great three points on the road for Winchester.
North Leigh are managed by Eddie Odihambio who was at one time a professional with Southampton football club and during the course of his career has playing career has played alongside his brothers Anaclet and Eric, with all three brothers being part of the Kidlington squad that played against Winchester in the 2017/18 season.
