We come into today's game on the back of an impressive 4-2 victory at Mangotsfield United before Christmas. Craig's side was depleted with injuries, unavailability and suspension but this gave the opportunity for squad rotation and it also allowed for three Under-17s to be substitutes and there was a welcome return to the matchday squad for Joe Hayward.

All of the Under-17s; Henry Brooks, Owen Lumsden and Rob Elms, came off the bench to make their first-team debuts and all more than held their own. Henry Brooks, in particular, was an influential substitute, providing an assist for Oli Bailey, and also scoring a goal of this own.

Today will be a tough game against a high-flying Sholing side. We need your support so please get behind the lads and enjoy the game!

MANGOTSFIELD 2 - 4 WINCHESTER CITY In their last match before Christmas Winchester returned to winning ways and for the second successive away game managed to score four goals. It was their third win at Mangotsfield's ground in a row, and Mangotsfield went into this match second from bottom in the table, but having achieved an excellent draw against Cirencester the previous week. They also appear to have a good youth policy with their youth team knocking Eastleigh out of the F A Youth Cup before losing narrowly to Plymouth Argyle in the next round. Some of the younger Eastleigh players featured in their Hampshire Senior Cup win against Havant and Waterlooville so this victory by the Mangotsfield youth team was a very good achievement.

Winchester were without Ollie Griggs, Kieran Douglas, Max Smith, Craig Feeney and Simba Mlambo through either suspension, covid or general unavailability and had to make thre changes to the starting line-up from the previous Saturday with Danny King, Liam Callaghan and Oli Bailey coming in. All three had been a substitute the previous week and for Bailey and Callaghan who had been on the substitutes bench several times in recent weeks a place in the starting eleven was a welcome Christmas present.

The Winchester bench contained youngsters Henry Brooks, Owen Lumsden and Robert Elms amongst their substitutes which also included the returning Joe Hayward. Both Brooks and Elms had represented Winchester in the F A Youth Cup match at Swindon Town with Elms scoring the team's consolation goal.

Early on an an effort from the home team's Daniel McBeam from just outside the area was just off target, while soon afterwards an effort from Winchester's Warren Bentley was just wide. However Mangotsfield took the lead after quarter of an hour a low effort from Wayne Ndermani went in off the post. Having drawn first blood in all of their last five league games it was certainly a test of Winchester's character as to how they would respond to this setback and as it turns out they did so very well.

Two minutes after going behind Winchester captain Jamie Barron forced a save from the home goalkeeper, while at the other end Kyle Simpson who went into this match having scored five goals in his last five games for the club including a hat-trick against Evesham shot over from just outside the penalty area for the home team.

Winchester however drew level in the 35th minute when Ollie Balmer added another to his growing number of assists when he set up put Oli Bailey through to score. Just before the interval Warren Bentley scores from close range to get on the scoresheet for the second successive game and more importantly his strike allowed his team to start the second half with a one goal advantage.

Early in the second half a cross from the lively Liam Callaghan saw Warren Bentley force ca good save from Marko Radovanovic. Winchester were now on top and a free kick from Ollie Balmer and Pip Nolan had an effort blocked.

In order to remedy things Mangotsfield make a double substitution, but in the 69th minute Winchester are forced to make a substitution when Liam Callaghan who had looked impressive on the right flank was injured and had to be replaced by Henry Brooks. Brooks though made an immediate impact when two minutes after coming on he set up Oli Bailey for the striker's second and Winchester's third with Bailey scoring with a shot into the bottom corner of the goal.

Five minutes later Brooks's first team debut gets even better when Ollie Balmer sets him up to score Winchester's fourth. After this Winchester bring both Elms and Lumsden meaning that they finish the match with three debutants.

Before the end Simpson and McBeam gave efforts for Mangotsfield which were just off target, with McBeam shooting over from close range, although the same player did have the consolation of converting a penalty in added on time, but by then the game was won and lost.

Joe Hayward has been a very loyal servant of Winchester City and he was the only one of Winchester's four substitutes to not get on the field, but the circumstances of the game meant that it was a good opportunity for the youngsters. Hayward's commitment to Winchester's cause has been demonstrated on many occasions, not least when just over five years ago he suffered a broken leg on Mangotsfield's ground which resulted in the abandonment of the match.

WINCHESTER CITY 2 - 4 LARKHALL Sometimes football results do not follow a logical pattern and these last two rounds of Saturday fixtures provides an example of this. When Winchester won 4-0 at Paulton the previous round and AFC Totton won at Larkhall by logic reversing the fixtures with Winchester at home to Larkhall and AFC Totton at home to Paulton by logic you would not expect two further away wins, but this was precisely what happened as both games resulted in 4-2 away wins.

Larkhall went into the match 13th in the table, but they had won more league games than they had lost and they had games in hand of the teams above them due an excellent F A Trophy run which has seen them win through four rounds of the competition and they had also had scored an average of two goals per league game, a statistic which they more than maintained after Saturday's game.

Larkhall recently changed their manager with the long serving Phil Bater who played more than 450 football league games in his playing career departing and the younger Ollie Price taking over. Certainly the enthusiasm with which their players and supporters celebrated their victory after their game suggests there is plenty of passion in the Larkhall camp following the managerial appointment.

Winchester announced an unchanged starting line-up from the previous Saturday, but they welcomed back Max Smith and Danny King who were both on a five man substitutes bench.

Early on Brad Norris had an effort saved by Charlie Philptt in the Winchester goal, while at the other end a powerfully struck shot from Ollie Balmer was only just off target. However Winchester did take the lead in the 9th minute when a well worked team move was ended with a well struck low shot from Winchester captain Jamie Barron. Larkhall thought they had equalized five minutes later when the ball was played into the Winchester box and Brad Norris scored with a powerful header, but the goal was disallowed for offside.

In the 21st minute Larkhall did draw level when following a goalmouth scramble the ball was only cleared as far as Brad Norris who made no mistake. Simba Mlambo headed just wide for Winchester, but five minutes after scoring their first goal Larkhall added a second through a well struck effort from Danny Demkiv. Some people were of the opinion that Charlie Philpott should have kept the effort out it did seem that the movement of the ball was not kind to him.

Winchester though searched for an equalizer with determination and when the ball was played back into the box in the 33rd minute Warren Bentley was on hand to score his first goal from open play since returning to the club.

Generally speaking the first half was an open end to end game with both teams having pacey forwards who were able to keep the opposition defenders on their toes.

With rain setting in and not all of the floodlights in working order darkness and damp were a feature of the second half, at the start of which Winchester replaced Josh McCormick with Danny King.

Early in the second half Jamie Barron had a free kick saved, while Charlie Philpott makes a good save from a Larkhall free kick, while the visitors almost score following a goalmouth scramble, but generally speaking the second half is not as open as the first.

Winchester made a couple of substitutions bringing on Max Smith and Oli Bailey, but shortly after the substitutions were made Larkhall were awarded a penalty. Some people were of the opinion that the foul may have been committed outside the area, but Brad Norris made no mistake from the spot as Larkhall restored their lead.

Winchester pushed men forward to try and level the scores, but Larkhall were always dangerous in attack and in the 86th minute when Daniel Demkiv scored with a low shot fin the 86th minute for his second goal of the game and clinch the win.

Winchester are away to Mangotsfield on Saturday,However the match of the under 23 team against Romsey was cancelled.

Although Larkhall were a very lively team Winchester though playing some very good football this season have lost their last two home matches and conceded seven goals in the process despite drawing first blood in each game,

I hope you all had a great Christmas and we look forward to welcoming you all back in the New Year when we host AFC Totton on a Friday night game on January 7th January 2022.

Last time out we won 4-2 at Mangotsfield United. We were very much down to the bare bones for the trip to Bristol with three 17-year-olds on the bench, and we were delighted to give all three their debuts. A particular mention has to go to young Henry Brooks who got an assist and a goal when he came off the bench, but Owen Lumsden and Rob Elms were also excellent and a credit to the youth set up at the club.

As we approach the end of 2021, I'd like to offer thanks to our loyal supporters who have been there throughout these unprecedented times, the lads and I really appreciate you all!

Todays Visitors sholing The Boatmen have a long but fragmented history, running teams from the Woolston Works as early as 1884, when they are recorded as being refused permission by the Hants & Dorset FA to introduce fresh players as substitutes at half-time. In March 1887 they were finalists in the first Portsmouth Challenge Cup, beaten 1-0 by Portsmouth Association Club. The Club were only beaten twice in 16 games that year (goal tally 72-6) and won the last Hants & Dorset Challenge Cup before these Associations split. Woolston Works won the first ever Hampshire Senior Cup Final in 1888, beating Winchester 2-0. There was some controversy that year concerning Woolston’s professional attitude, which was infamously referred to as "Kesson's Boots'. Andover were beaten in an earlier round by Woolston, in which a Glasgow - based player called J. Kesson played a prominent part. Andover protested that Kesson should be disqualified on the grounds of residency - although he had played for Woolston Works earlier that season, he had since moved back to Glasgow. Woolston’s appeal rested on the fact that Kesson had left several of his clothing items at his lodgings in Woolston, and this should be interpreted as his intention to return. The Hampshire FA upheld the appeal and allowed Kesson to play. Re-forming after World War 1 as Thorneycroft’s (Woolston), they turned professional and were admitted into the Hampshire County League from 1920/21 to 1925/26. In 1920/21 Thorneycroft’s reached the FA Cup First Round proper, meeting first Division Burnley at Fratton Park, and held them to a 0-0 draw, before losing 5-0 in the replay. Burnley were in the middle of a 30-game unbeaten run and went on to win the first Division Championship. Thorneycroft’s Woolston re-formed in 1947 but were only able to keep going until 1952. The Club were re-formed as Vosper Thorneycroft FC in 1960 and joined the Southampton Junior League.

After several successful years, Vospers were promoted to the Hampshire League Division 3 in 1991.

The following season they were promoted to Division 2.

1997/98 saw Vospers as Hampshire Division 2 Runners-up and Hampshire Intermediate Cup Winners. In 2001/02 Vospers won the Southampton Senior Cup. 2002/03 Vospers were re-named as VT FC (after the parent company) and saw the Club as Runners-up in the Southampton Senior Cup. 2003/4 saw VT as Hampshire Premier League Champions, Southampton Senior Cup Winners, and promotion to the Sydenhams Wessex League Division 1.

2005/06 VT Reserves won the Southampton Senior Cup at St Mary's Stadium which gave the club their 3rd victory in 5 years.

2006/07 was a great season for the club. The first team finished in third place and the reserves finished runners-up in Combination 1 and they also won the Southampton Senior Cup again. The Club's 4th victory in 6 years.

2007/2008 The 1st team were Runners-up to Totton in the Premier League and the Reserves won 3 out of 4 trophies. They are the Sydenhams (Wessex) Combination 1 League Champions, the Southampton Senior Cup Champions (for the third consecutive year) and the Sydenhams (Wessex) Combination Cup Champions. They missed out on the Hampshire Intermediate Cup by losing to Nursling in the semi-final which was the ONLY defeat they suffered all season. An achievement to be proud of.

2008/09 was equally a very successful season with the first team again Runners-up in the Wessex Premier, this time to Poole Town. They were Wessex League Cup Winners with a close 2-1 victory over Hamworthy United. Runners-up in the Hampshire Senior Cup with a narrow 1-0 defeat against Fleet Town. Reserves again won Wessex Combination 1 and the U18 Youth team made a clean sweep winning four trophies i.e. The League, The League Cup, The Hampshire FA Youth Cup and the Echo Floodlit Cup....what a great season.

Todays Visitors sholing 2009/10 In our very first season in the Zamaretto Southern League we finished a creditable 4th (play-off position) in the South & West Division and finished Runners-up in the Red Insure League Cup after going so close and finally losing on penalties to Cambridge City. The Reserves regained the Southampton Senior Cup at St Mary's defeating Team Solent 2-0....the sixth time in the last ten years the Club has won it.

The Club changed their name in July 2010 to Sholing FC after the parent company VT Group were no longer in existence.

2010/11 In only their second season in the Southern League South & West, the 1st team reached an incredible 2nd place, only 2 points behind AFC Totton. Also, Hampshire Senior Cup Finalists at St Marys losing 3-1 to AFC Totton. The Reserves gained an incredible Double by winning the Wessex Combination League and League Cup in its Final year.

2011/12 For the third season on the trot we once again reached the playoffs only to fall at the first hurdle by a 1-0 away defeat by Gosport. The reserves copied last year's achievement by winning the League and League Cup in the newly formed Wyvern League.

2012/13 Despite being bottom of the league just before Christmas, the first team went on an incredible run in the second half of the season and finished 7th in the Southern League South & West. The Reserves once again won the Wyvern League, this time going unbeaten the whole season. The club made the difficult decision to voluntarily drop out of the Southern League South & West (step 4) and into the Wessex League Premier (step 5). With the focus of the club turning to developing the Silverlake Arena, we didn't want to financially extend ourselves and sink into debt.

2013/14 Back in the Wessex League Premier Division saw the club playing lots of old local rivals and the first team got off to a storming start to the season and it wasn't to be until February when we were first defeated. However, due to terrible weather & cup commitments, the club barely played in January & February, meaning a huge backlog of fixtures in the final weeks of the season. Despite having to play 20 games in 30 days, including NINE successive away games, Sholing won the League with 104 points and a goal difference of +105. The Reserves made it a hat-trick of Wyvern League titles in the most thrilling way, scoring a goal in injury time in the last game of the season, to deny Portchester the title. They also won the Southampton Senior Cup at St Mary's. Of course, the FA Vase win will be what most people will remember from this season, the greatest honour in the club's history. Back in October as we faced Winchester in the 1st round, no one was dreaming of Wembley, but as the rounds were ticked off, we started to get the feeling that this would be our year.

So, on the 10th May 2014 at the home of football, Wembley Stadium, backed by over 3,000 fans, Marvin Mclean scored the only goal and Byron Mason & Dave Diaper lifted the Vase. In a whirlwind of activity that followed, the team paraded the FA Vase in front of the Southampton FC fans at St Mary's, were given an official reception by the Mayor of Southampton and appeared on both local TV stations. After 15 years in charge of the first team, Dave Diaper handed over the reins to Dave Fear & Mick Marsh, to concentrate on the Ground redevelopment (for which the club has kindly received backing and grants from Sport England & the FA to build a new clubhouse and 3G pitch).

We also said a fond goodbye to players Marc Diaper, Tyronne Bowers & Lee Bright, who all decided to "retire at the top" after Wembley. After 37 years as Secretary and then becoming Vice President we lost Arthur Fox to cancer, but he achieved his dream by attending the Wembley final.

2014/15 Club was granted promotion back into the Southern League South & West division. After 21 matches in charge Mick Marsh & Dave Fear stepped down from their managerial role leaving Chairman Dave Diaper to step back into the fray alongside Stuart Hussey. Sholing finished in 17th position having been in that position for 32 weeks. Sholing reached the semi-final Russell Cotes cup and the final of the Hampshire Senior Cup losing out 3-0 to Gosport Borough at Fratton Park.

Todays Visitors sholing Ground grading issues saw Sholing relegated back to the Wessex League. The Reserves much like the 1st team had a change of management part way through the season with Martin Tongs stepping up from U18’s to take charge. The Wyvern title eluded them this season losing out to AFC Portchester and had to settle for runners up and the two cup competitions saw them runners up again to Petersfield Town in the League Cup but were successful in the John Stimpson Memorial Shield beating AFC Totton.

2015/16 Following a ground grading issue Sholing returned to the Sydenhams Wessex League.

Sholing welcomed Darren Burdle into the coaching staff. A remarkable season for Sholing as ten players from within the under 18 ranks made their first team appearances something that has never happened before. Cup disappointments meant the season was all about the League and Sholing finished the season Runners Up to Salisbury losing one home League game which was our first game against Moneyfields the only team to do the League double over us. Dan Mason was pipped by former Sholing striker Sam Wilson on the final day of the season to deny Dan being the League’s leading scorer.

2016/17: Behind the scenes saw another change in management within the Development side with Iain Calder Steve Ross & Steve Blackburn taking over the reins. Finishing 4th in the League and reaching S/F of JSMS & ¼ Final of SDFA Sen Cup. Sholing FC were rocked in Dec 16 with the sudden death of Coach Darren Burdle aged 50. Sholing FC finished season 3rd with Dan Mason again being the leading marksman. Sholing completed a cup double winning the Sydenhams Wessex League Cup then 52 hrs later lifted the SDFA Senior Cup for the 9th time at St Mary’s.

2017/18: The season like last season saw changes in management with Development manager Iain Calder stepping up to 1st team coach. Steve Blackburn & Curtis Osbourne along with Steve Ross took on the Development role and took the U18’s to the 1st Round of the FA Youth Cup. Steve & Curtis left the club midseason with Patrick McGonigle and Steve Terry doubling up their roles with U18’S and Development with Steve Ross. The 1st team finished third in the Sydenhams Wessex League and failed to defend both trophies losing out in the semi-finals in both competitions. The Development side finished mid-table with many U18’s stepping up to the Development side. The U18’s won the HCY League Cup and a number of the U18’S featured in 1st team games.

2018/19: Sholing won the Sydenhams Wessex League title with 8 games remaining of the season & promotion back to Bet Victor Southern League South a winning double was achieved beating Christchurch to win the Russell-Cotes Cup for the 1st time in their history. The Reserves finished runners-up in The Wyvern Combination League Premier Division with the U18’s losing out on penalties to Moneyfields in HCYL League Cup Final.

2019/20: After a slow start in the league, the Boatmen picked up form after Christmas and quickly climbed from the bottom 3 to 10th place and were looking good for a possible late run for the play-offs, before the season was sadly halted by the Coronavirus outbreak. Sholing created club history by reaching the First-round proper of the FA Trophy for the first time, losing out in the tie to a very good Bath City side. Off the pitch, the new clubhouse was opened in December by James Beattie. Also, plans have been approved for a new changing room building and we secured new naming rights for the ground to be called the Mackoy Stadium. The Reserves were in third placed when the season was curtailed. During the lockdown we lost club stalwart Ray Tyrrell a club legend who will be sorely missed.

2020/21: The club finally built a new changing room building and carried out a host of stadium improvements over a terribly busy summer. In what must be a first for the Boatmen, we lifted silverware in October, winning & retaining the Russell Cotes Cup, which was held over from the previous cancelled season. More history was made in the FA Cup when the club reached the 4th

Todays Visitors sholing Qualifying Round for the first time where we were narrowly defeated by Torquay United. Yet again tragedy hit the club when we lost 36yr old supporter James Goodway & then Club Photographer Ray Routledge. The season again was curtailed, and no further games were played. For our Reserves they formed part of the new U23 League in the revamped Hampshire Combination Development League not making a great start but after Lockdown managed to get back on track and were able to finish the season in third place.

Sholing F.C. Management Team & Players 2020/21 Dave Diaper - joined the club as manager in season 1999/00 from B.A.T. Former Southampton Schools and Hampshire Representative Player. Previous clubs played for; Cadnam, BHC (IOW), Pirelli, AC Delco, Otterbourne, Netley Vics and B.A.T. Coached Hampshire Senior squad 2002, managed Hampshire U21 2002, Otterbourne and B.A.T. 2014 won Wessex League and FA Vase.

Following the resignation of Mick Marsh Dave Diaper once again took up the managerial reins in Oct 2014. Dave has now reached an incredible landmark 1119 games in charge during his twenty-two years at Portsmouth Road at the start of this 20021/22 season.

Marc Diaper – After 14 seasons with the Boatmen Marc played his last game at Wembley in the FA Vase win and retired. However, Marc was talked into joining AFC Totton. Marc re-joined the club in a coaching capacity in 2016 and has now progressed to the role of Assistant Manager.

Jack Smith — Jack made 135 appearances for the Boatmen left in 2018/19 season to join Hamble Club and has now returned as an Assistant Coach.

Terry Miller — Coaching staff Terry’s playing career saw him play in goal for BAT Sports, Winchester Castle and The Clump before a broken leg finished his playing days before taking up refereeing.

Terry teamed up with the 1st team in 2016.

Joel Whitfield - Physio Joel has been at the club since 2015/16 taking over from Tasha Bowers where they both studied together at University of Chichester in 2014 Joel has a Degree in Sports Therapy (BSC Hons) Phil Moody & Michael Kurn - Have both joined the club in 2020 to take on the role of goalkeeping coaches.

2021/- 2022

RYAN PRYCE Ex-AFC Bournemouth Goalkeeper that also lists Salisbury City, Gosport Borough and Fleet Town amongst his former clubs. Pryce made six senior appearances for the Cherries, making his debut against Southend United. A fans favourite that has made the number one berth his own.

DANNY KING Left sided defender, the clubs longest-serving player currently and a real fans favourite. A teacher by trade, he has played for Chelsea and Southampton in his youth. Danny reached his testimonial year last season and had his testimonial at the end of the 2017-18 campaign. ‘Kinger’ also skippers the side in the absence of Jamie Barron.

JOE HAYWARD Defender who joined us having previously been with Eastleigh FC, unfortunately broke his leg early in his City career but returned quickly and showed what great potential he has. Joe scored a memorable goal, City’s spot kick, in the Fourth Qualifying Round of the FA Cup away to Torquay United in the 2018-19 campaign.

JAMIE BARRON Re-signed from Gosport Borough Jamie has played for Salisbury, Andover, Sholing and Folland Sports. A winner of a Schools National Cup medal. Appointed Captain for another season and a really important player for us. ‘Baz’ has remained loyal to City despite interest from elsewhere.

SIMBA MLAMBO Also signed from Davis’ former club, Fleet Town. Mlambo has spent some time in North Hampshire and was an Alton Town player before this. Can play wide or up front and a player with immense speed and power in the air. Another playing starting his fifth season with City. Simba works tirelessly for the cause and scores important goals as well.

ROB FLOOKS ‘Flooksy’ is another former City man that has returned to the club. He left to join Southern Premier League side, Gosport Borough, but after a spell at Privett Park, has returned to the City Ground.

MAX SMITH - Max Smith - Max has previous experience at Moneyfields and most recently and, Alton Town, before joining City ahead of the 2019-20 season. He started his career at the Portsmouth FC academy. A dynamic Midfielder that we have high hopes for in the season ahead.

WINCHESTER CITY FC PLAYER PROFILES

2021/- 2022

KIERAN DOUGLAS - Young Defender signed from the Wessex leagues’ Christchurch FC, where he had been Captain for two successful seasons. A tall, strong and composed player who has settled in very well at the club already and we only see good things for the future. Kieran re-joined Christchurch on dual-registered forms for their FA Vase run in the 2020-21 season but he is now back at City once again.

OLLY BALMER - 21-year-old Forward who has signed from Poole Town, having played for them at the Conference South level. Olly is technically skilled with an eye for the goal, so we are looking forward to him flourishing with the Citizens this year. Balmer has turned in many influential displays for City, including scoring a memorable last-minute free-kick at Cirencester Town which made him a fans favourite.

OLLIE GRIGGS - Combative Midfielder who we are pleased to be signing permanently for the Citizens this season having played with the club on two occasions in the past whilst at Southern Premier club, Dorchester Town. Griggsy has played for both City and Dorchester in recent years and has now signed for City once again for the 2021-22 season.

NICK HARVEY – Young Goalkeeper, Nick Harvey, has signed first-team forms for City this season. Harvey played for City’s Under-23s last season whilst dual-registered with Ringwood Town. An agile young Goalkeeper, with a bright future ahead.

GREG PEEL – A former Carlisle United forward, Peel has signed for City from Bemerton Heath Harlequins. Peel lists Waterford FC, Larkhall Athletic, Mangotsfield United and National League South side, Bath City, amongst his former sides. Greg has a real presence up front and we are delighted to secure his signature.

LIAM CALLAGHAN – A tricky former AFC Totton winger that has signed forms a second consecutive season for City. Callaghan featured heavily for City’s Under-23s at the end of last season once their title winning campaign restarted and was a constant threat.

TOM VINCENT – A tall, powerful young forward who was integral for City in their title-winning Under-23 side last season. Vincent impressed so much he has now signed first-team forms and featured in City’s opening friendly away at Cowes Sports.

2021/- 2022

LEX VAUGHAN – Lex burst onto the scene by performing outstandingly in Jamie Ricketts' successful Under-16s side. Lex was promoted directly to the Under-23s where he impressed last season, so much so that he too has signed first-team forms for the 2021-22 season.

BRAD SNELLING – Brad has returned to City for another stint. Snelling has played in goal for City before and has since played for Blackfield and Langley and also AFC Portchester but he has now returned to the Simplyhealth City Ground.

ADAM GRANGE – Adam is a new face at Winchester City, joining from Poole Town. Grange has also previously served Andover Town and was an England Schoolboy and is a great coup for City.

TYRELL MITFORD – City’s FA Cup hero has re-signed for the club once again.

Mitford will be hoping to emulate his recent goalscoring exploits. An excellent finisher who lists Ramsgate, Kings Langley, Beaconsfield and Team Solent amongst his former sides.

OLI BAILEY – A club legend that has moved back to the area and re-signed from Gresley Rovers. Bailey had several prolific seasons at the club before re-locating but he is now back in the area and back at City. A former Gosport Borough forward.

JOSH McCORMICK – ‘Macca’ has signed first-team forms once again City. A former City youth team player that went on to play first team football elsewhere, including at Bognor Regis Town. Josh is now converted to a full-back and has been a regular in Davo’s plans since returning to the club.

HARRY BIRCHNALL - Young Goalkeeper, son of Assistant Manager, Sean Birchnall. Harry has been around the club for several seasons now and has been frequently involved with the First-Team squad. Started in goal in the 4-0 win at Slimbridge at the start of September, and kept a clean sheet, making an excellent save in the process.

CRAIG FEENEY - Popular and prolific forward, Craig Feeney, has returned to Winchester City for another spell in September 2021, re-joining the club from AFC Totton, for whom he left for several years ago. Feeney can play out wide or up front and is a real handful in the opposition penalty box

WARREN BENTLEY - 'Wazza' has returned 'home', after scoring over 100 goals during his last spell at The City Ground. Bentley left in 2016 to join Gosport Borough and has since played for Hungerford, Poole Town, Weymouth, Salisbury and most recently has a second spell at National League South side, Hungerford Town. A prolific striker and a firm fans favourite.

PIP NOLAN - 'Pip', Patrick Nolan, is another returning Citizen. Nolan is a central defender that has stepped-in with Kieran Douglas gaining an injury in November. Nolan joined City from AFC Stoneham and has also recently served Brockenhurst and Team Solent in the Wessex League.

DAN WALSTER - A talented central defender that has dual-registered with City from National Premier League side, Aldershot Town. Walster started out at AFC Bournemouth Academy before he then switched to Aldershot's Academy. Dan most recently played first-team football at Chichester City and has now become a regular in the heart of the City defence ST STAF STA STAFF P PR PRO PROF PROFI PROFIL PROFILE PROFILES CRAIG DAVIS – Player-Manager who came to City from Fleet Town after relinquishing his position as Manager. Took over as Interim Manager until the end of the 2016-17 season before taking over the reins permanently. His playing career started off as a pro at Cardiff City before spells at Bashley, Salisbury, Gosport Borough and AFC Totton. Has won both the Southern League South and West and Premier as a player. ‘Davo’ has had several opportunities to move on from City, including an opportunity at a higher level, but he has shown his commitment and loyalty to City and we are delighted to have him at the helm.

JO BROCKSOM - Jo is in her 6th season now at Winchester as Sports therapist, this is her 2nd season taking a leading role though, has been integral in keeping our players on the pitch and delighted to have her with the club again this season.

Winchester City FC CLUB HISTORY

The Winchester Football Club was founded in 1884 as a result of the endeavours of two residents of the city – Oxford graduate and former England Rugby cap Charles Sylvester Wooldridge and Huntingdon-born all-round sportsman (and, incidentally, inventor of ice hockey!) Arnold Tebbutt. The football club, which had strong links with Winchester College, made quite an impact in the early years of association football in Hampshire, reaching the final of the inaugural Hampshire Senior Cup competition in 1888 and providing a number of players to represent Hampshire in county-based competitions. However financial difficulties, combined with the indifference of Winchester residents, led to the 1884 club folding in 1893.

The decline of the city’s most high-profile club left a void that was subsequently to be filled by the Winchester Swallows FC. Formed in 1891, the Swallows were less socially exclusive than the 1884 club and had a membership more reflective of that of Winchester as a whole. The club changed its name to Winchester FC at the start of the start of the 1894/95 season, and again in 1907 when it became Winchester City FC. Like the 1884 club, the Swallows appeared in a dark blue and white strip and played their home games at Bar End, before moving in 1896 to a field adjoining the Old Red Deer pub in Stockbridge Road, and relocating again to the Roebuck Inn in 1902.

The club first played in a league-based competition in 1896/97 when it entered the newly-formed South Hampshire League. Winchester FC won the title in this first season, and repeated that feat in the each of the following three years. The club joined the Hampshire League in 1898/99 where, after struggling during their first few seasons, they remained unbeaten throughout the 1904/05 season and won the League’s Northern Section. The club also enrolled to the Southampton and District League in 1908/09, but with no notable success.

Like a number of other football clubs, Winchester City FC effectively disbanded at the start of the First World War in 1914, and didn’t reappear until 1920.

The rebirth of the club signalled two significant changes. Firstly, the club had moved again, this time playing its home fixtures at the Fair Field at Bar End (now the site of the Bar End Industrial Estate), a site where it was to stay until the Second World War. Secondly, it adopted a new strip, discarding its navy-blue colours in favour of red and white stripes.

The late 20s and early 30s proved to be a purple patch in City’s fortunes. The 1929/30 season saw the side again win the Northern Section of the Hampshire League, and achieve its most successful FA Cup run to date. That year saw City reach the fourth qualifying round of the tournament where a 3-0 defeat by Thames FC at the 120,000 capacity West Ham Stadium deprived them of an away trip to Fulham in the First-Round proper. Any disappointment at this would have been forgotten two years later in 1931 when City lifted the Hampshire Senior Cup for the first time after defeating Andover at The Dell.

One of the key members of the team in that era was the teenage Ted Drake. A local gas meter-reader at the time of joining City, Drake went on to enjoy a successful career with Southampton before joining Arsenal and also collecting five England caps. The highlight of his subsequent managerial career saw him steer Chelsea to their first (and, until 2005, their only) league title in 1955.

Play was again interrupted by war in 1939, although the club did continue to play and took advantage of the presence of a number of enlisted players that passed through the city. The end of hostilities saw City move yet again, this time taking up a lease of the Army’s playing field at Airlie Road, Stanmore.

The 1950s saw a second notable period of success at Winchester City. The side were runners up in the Hampshire League in 1949/50 and, in the same season, won their first Southampton Senior Cup final, an achievement which was repeated in 1951/52. The Russell Cotes Cup was also won for the first time in 1954/55. Success on the field was mirrored off the pitch as the club enjoyed some of its largest gates with crowds that regularly topped 1,000 filing into the Airlie Road stands.

CLUB HISTORY It was during this period that the young Terry Paine ran out for his hometown club. His prodigious talent led to his being signed in 1956 by Southampton with whom he made a record number of appearances (713 over 17 seasons). Paine also made 19 appearances for England, the last of which was against Mexico in the 1966 World Cup finals for which he (belatedly) received a winner’s medal in 2009.

Prior to the 1970s City had played virtually all of its competitive football, with the exceptions of the Amateur and FA Cups, within the confines of the Hampshire county border. However, after the club’s Russell Cotes Cup victory and a creditable second spot in the Hampshire League in 1970/71 the club’s Board decided to make the step up and enter the Southern League for the first time. City survived for just two seasons at that higher level, achieving disappointing final positions of 12th out of 16 (1971/72) and 21st out of 22 (1972/73), before electing to return to the Hampshire League.

For the remainder of the 1970s City yoyo’d between the top two divisions of the Hampshire League before a potentially fatal blow hit the club in 1981. In that year the lease agreement with the Army for Airlie Road expired and was not renewed. Briefly homeless, the club eventually moved to its current ground, a pitch leased from the City Council at Hillier Way. The ground needed a considerable amount of work to get it up to scratch, as did the team which had tumbled into the Hampshire League’s third division by 1982/83. The ignominy of this decline was made all the greater by the success of local rivals Winchester Castle in the first division – City could no longer claim to be Winchester’s premier club.

The continuing existence of Winchester City FC throughout the 1980s owed much to the work of Geoff Cox who at various times acted as Chairman, Manager, Coach and Groundsman at the club. Under his guidance the club was eventually to return to the Hampshire League’s top division in 1993/94.

The new millennium ushered in a period of unprecedented success for Winchester City. Prompted in part by the arrival of new and ambitious members to the Board, the club merged with Winchester Castle and began a rapid rise through the local league structure. Promotion to the Hampshire Premier League was achieved in 2000/01, and followed two years later by promotion to the Wessex League. The Wessex League title was secured at the first attempt.

That same season witnessed the club’s greatest ever triumph. May 2004 saw City face Suffolk side AFC Sudbury in the final of FA Vase at Birmingham City’s St Andrew’s ground. Few that were there will forget the spine-jangling moment when club captain Danny Smith lifted the trophy after the 2-0 victory.

Further successes were recorded in the seasons that followed – 2004/05 saw City win the Hampshire Senior Cup for the second time, beating Aldershot 2-1 at Bournemouth’s Dean Court ground, whilst 2005/06 witnessed the club regain the Wessex League championship and win promotion to the Southern League for a second spell.

City’s return to the Southern League lasted three seasons. Financial problems, followed by a final day points deduction saw City return to the Wessex League for the 2009/10 campaign. Despite a concerted push to gain promotion back to the Southern League which ultimately proved successful in 2011/12, the resources required to sustain the club’s position at that level proved elusive. Winchester City FC finished the 2012/13 season at the foot of the Southern league and facing an uncertain future. The late spring of 2013 saw a takeover at the club and, with a new Committee structure and financial backers in place, the 2013/14 season heralds the start of a new chapter in the history of Winchester City FC. 2013-2014 saw a season of re-organisation and team building, with City retaining a place in the Sydenhams Wessex League.

2015-2016 – City made a valiant attempt to take the Wessex title but just fell short to a very successful Peters field Town side who were rightly promoted to the Southern League. City under the Managership of Paul Masters then set about strengthening the squad to win the title next season when out of the blue they were offered a place in the Southern League due to a withdrawal. The Club were given 24 hours to pay their fees and attend the AGM in Torquay. A frantic drive by Director of Football Dave Malone saw him arrive just in time with the relevant papers and bank draft! As a result, our neighbours, Peters field Town, were moved out of Division 1 South and West to accommodate City and placed in the Central Division!

CLUB HISTORY City's first season back in the Southern League was a success with them reaching the play-offs final losing to Banbury United in the quarter finals, who were promoted and coming within minutes of winning the Hampshire Senior Cup losing on penalties to Havant and Waterlooville. City's preparation for this season were disrupted by the unexpected resignation of Manager Paul Masters in the middle or pre-season friendlies. The Club quickly filled the vacancy by appointing Petersfield Town's Manager Ian Saunders to the post.

The club started the season brightly and made it to the fourth Qualifying Round of the FA Cup, beating US Portsmouth, Street and Truro City before finally succumbing to Harrow Borough. The club also had a successful run in the FA Trophy, thanks to wins against Petersfield Town, Fleet Town and Phoenix Sports before getting knocked out narrowly by Dulwich Hamlet. Craig Feeney and Howard Neighbour forced a strong strike partnership, added to that the midfield flair of Captain Stuart Green and winger, Andy Jenkinson, City recovered from a difficult spell before Christmas to mount a play-off push in the early stages of the New Year. Manager, Ian Saunders, went away with the military, and during this time, Mick Catlin stepped in to take over the running of the First-Team. When Saunders returned, form deteriorated and Saunders subsequently left the club and was replaced by Interim Manager, Craig Davis, who joined the club from Fleet Town. Davis took control of the club until the end of the season, when it was announced that he would officially be becoming Permanent First Team Manager.

‘Davo’ finished 11th with City in his first full season in charge, a season that saw a successful run, resulting in a Hampshire Senior Cup Semi-Final where City eventually lost to Blackfield & Langley. The Citizens also hosted Southampton FC in the Southampton Senior Cup and achieved memorable league victories against Didcot Town, Evesham United, Swindon Supermarine and Wimborne Town as well as impressive away draws at both Swindon Supermarine and Salisbury, the latter seeing City come from 2-0 down to salvage a point at the Raymond McEnhill Stadium.

In the 2018-19, City had an impressive pre-season including victories over Dorchester Town and Eastleigh. City started strongly in the league too. This went hand-in-hand with a cup run that saw the Citizens make it through to the 4th Qualifying Round of the FA Cup, following victories against Bournemouth Poppies, Frome Town, Merthyr Town and Cirencester Town before eventually losing 4-1 away at Torquay United. City’s league form dipped slightly during this period but a strong finish to the season meant that City missed out on the play-offs on the last day of the season. City needed three points away at Cinderford Town, but the game finished 0-0 meaning it was in fact Cinderford that finished in the final play-off berth.

Tyrell Mitford, Joe Cook and Josh Harfield left the club during the 2019-20 pre-season and into the club have come Kieran Douglas, Keith Emmerson, Olly Balmer and Dan Williamson has returned to City. City performed well during the 2019-20 campaign and were 4th in the league with a play-off berth looking likely when the season was curtailed due to Covid-19. City made the First Qualifying Round of the FA Cup before losing to Taunton Town but impressive cup runs in the local competitions took place once again. City were also League Cup semi-finalists, securing £1000 prize money for doing so.

A belated pre-season campaign took place in August 2020 with away wins at Bedfont Sports, Hartley Wintney and Marlow FC. Tyrell Mitford has returned to the club along with Josh McCormick and new faces Graeme Purdy, Jack Wilson, Felix Davies, Charlie Philpott, Josh Davies and Kel Akpobire have all joined the club.
