Reaping rewards of future-proofing workshops

Repairify Innovations director Martin Brown on benefits of in-house ADAS calibrations

ADAS systems are no longer a niche feature in vehicles because they are now seen as a key part of the technology that ensures safer and e cient driving.

With this increase, bodyshops, accident repair centres, and general workshops are viewing ADAS calibration work as a key revenue stream and are looking to bring it in-house rather than outsourcing the work to main dealers and third parties.

The first benefit is what every business wants, and that is operational control. Bringing calibrations in-house means vehicles no longer need to leave the site for work, so workflows are not disrupted by delays that might happen when the vehicle is o -site awaiting work to be done and then returned.

This leads to significantly less downtime, which, in turn, leads to a reduction in key-tokey times, so customers are happy that they are getting their vehicle back more quickly, and businesses have bays open for additional work to be completed.

The second benefit is made up of customer confidence and compliance. The customer wants to know calibrations have been done correctly, and businesses can o er peace of mind by letting them know it was all overseen by a specific technician and carried out

under the business’s roof. This helps build trust with the customer and strengthens the workshop’s reputation for right first-time calibrations.

A lot of work goes into compliance. However, if all the ducks are in a row from the business, it is pretty straightforward. This is because keeping the work in-house makes it easier for the workshop to meet manufacturer procedures, the Thatcham IIR requirements, which are known as the industry standard, and insurance mandates.

In addition, it allows for the business to have complete audit trails and calibration printouts. These two things are especially important if there is an issue that arises later, and there are questions from insurers and solicitors around liability.

The final benefit is more

Skilled technicians and products on site ensures ADAS work can be hoovered up

strategic, and this is because bringing ADAS calibration work in-house should be part of a business’s ongoing strategy.

The investment in training for sta and products required to perform the calibrations ensures the business can meet the demand for work. It also means it can advertise that it o ers in-house calibrations, which di erentiates it from competitors, alongside

it potentially being a prerequisite to joining an insurer’s network of preferred workshops.

However, the most important strategic benefit comes in the form of the business future proofing itself because, as vehicles have more ADAS systems fitted as standard, it will lead to calibrations becoming a centre piece of repair work. Having skilled technicians and products on site ensures work can be hoovered up and completed e ciently.

As ADAS technology continues to play a central role in modern vehicles, the decision to bring calibration work in-house o ers workshops not only greater operational e ciency, but also stronger customer loyalty, improved compliance, and long-term strategic advantages.

Championing the future of the aftermarket

IAAF chief executive o cer Mark Field on supporting independents, expanding services and promoting best practice

Earlier this year, the IAAF announced plans to set out the future of a federation now in its 95th year — but remain keen to spearhead initiatives aimed at ensuring the UK’s aftermarket business leads from the front.

The IAAF has recently been holding a series of regional meetings, including talks at ensuring a better gender balance in the automotive aftermarket.

CEO Mark Field told Aftermarket its 21st century mission has expanded from just lobbying to become focused on member engagement, delivering data, reports, and training opportunities — all vital to the success of aftermarket businesses and more recently independent garages, which IAAF now caters for.

But Field was keen to stress that the association represents the entire automotive aftermarket chain, also comprising manufacturers, suppliers, warehouse distributors, buying groups and motor factors.

Field’s own career began in media and journalism, working at Haymarket Publishing and CAT Magazine, before moving into PR and then a trading group working with motor factors and suppliers. He later founded his own business, Impression. His heavy involvement with the IAAF as a communications professional paved the way for him to become CEO.

Since then, he and the IAAF team have successfully increased and reinvigorated the association’s membership, while working closely with parallel industry organisations such as the SMMT, The Motor Ombudsman and FIGIEFA in Brussels.

Field said the IAAF continues to emphasise the core value of independents and recent work on the motor vehicle block exemption regulations illustrates how the

Planning to accelerate garage membership and raise perceptions

fundamentals of supporting the survival of local garages, together with supply chain freedom, should be defended.

“We also have a commitment to ensuring legislation promotes freedom of choice for motorists and suppliers, not just regulatory compliance.”

There are additional plans to expand regional engagement and promote industry best practice through meetings and conferences.

However, Field said there was an ongoing push to make events more engaging, community-building, and reflective of the industry’s collective spirit.

And in addition to annual golf and networking events, plus new initiatives such as five-a-side football, the IAAF hosts its flagship annual industry awards.

During the summer, Field led fresh industry calls for a long-overdue increase in the MOT test fee.

The IAAF said it was time to reset the aftermarket’s contract with consumers as part of a push to modernise the MOT and boost support for safety, air quality, increasing standards and the right to repair for independents.

Over the coming 12-48 months, Field said he plans to accelerate garage membership, raise standards and perceptions and focus outreach on schools and colleges.

He is also keen to pursue ‘wraparound services’ for the aftermarket community, including business and mental health support, working with organisations such as Ben and [M]enable.

“We have a multi-level approach to advocacy, supporting stakeholders from the motorist to students, technicians, parts suppliers, and the wider supply chain.”

That mission will be continued and ramped up into the near future and beyond, he said.

Ensuring confidence in the lubricant marketplace

Darren Frogson, chairman of VLS, on the types of cases the organisation has investigated over the years and what the aftermarket needs to look out for…

Since the Verification of Lubricant Specifications (VLS) was formed in 2013, our independent organisation, backed by a panel of technical industry experts, has investigated over 130 cases.

In 2023, the total stood at 88. The 50% rise in case investigations over the past two years, combined with the complexity of those cases, demonstrates that there is still work to be done to ensure an open and fair marketplace that end users can have confidence in.

Over 70% of the cases VLS has investigated have related to passenger vehicle engine oils, reflecting the size of the passenger vehicle market. However, there has been a notable rise in the percentage of commercial vehicle engine oil cases and automotive hydraulic fluid cases.

VLS procedures only permit the investigation of products available for purchase in the UK; however, many of the products investigated are also available in other global markets.

More than 80% of complaints have related to non-compliance with stated specifications, conflicting or unevidenced OEM approvals, or non-

compliance with industry standards. Whether it be compliance with the ACEA’s European Engine Oil Sequences, other market standards or conflicting or unevidenced OEM approvals, it is vital that any end user can be confident that a product can deliver what it claims and is suitable for use in the given application.

New ACEA sequences are published, and OEM specifications evolve over time. For example, VW 504.00/507.00 has kept the same specification reference, but some tests behind it have been updated, and the severity has changed.

Lubricant manufacturers cannot assume that because a product meets a specification at a given time, it will continue to do so during the lifetime of the specification. Requirements

Avoid putting your workshop’s reputation and customer trust at risk

change, and only regular auditing and testing through comprehensive quality management processes can ensure that products remain compliant.

VLS’s objective is always to bring products into compliance. In many cases, marketing claims are withdrawn, technical data sheets updated, products are reformulated, and stock quarantined and uplifted if required.

However, if the companies involved do not take su cient action to bring products into compliance, cases are reported to Trading Standards. There are currently seven products that have been proven not to be compliant and have been escalated to Trading Standards. The details of the products and companies involved are displayed on the VLS website.

We urge workshops to review the list and avoid using products that have been proven to be non-compliant. At best, you are putting your workshop’s reputation and your customer trust at risk. At worst, you are risking damaging customer vehicles and, in the case of a brake fluid failure, risking serious injury or death in a collision that could have been avoided. Visit our website, https://ukla-vls.org. uk/, to find out more about us and our latest case investigations. If you have any concerns about a lubricant’s ability to deliver what it claims, you can report them by email (admin@ukla-vls.org. uk) or by calling 01442 875922.

Intelligent connections shaping the future

Jörg Weisgerber, MD of electronics at FORVIA HELLA, explains how the firm’s drive for innovation is transforming the future of software-defined vehicles

International automotive supplier FORVIA HELLA has launched its intelligent power distribution module (iPDM) into series production for a premium worldwide manufacturer for the first time.

The iPDM ensures a reliable, fail-operational power supply in the vehicle, is a key component for highly automated driving and is the first in the automotive sector to use so-called ‘eFuses’ — electronic fuses.

With more than 25 years of experience and more than 13 million electronic control units manufactured annually, we are leading suppliers of body electronics.

In the future, the development toward software-defined vehicles will fundamentally change the electrical/electronic (E/E) architecture of vehicles.

To consistently address this new future-oriented area of business, we have significantly expanded our portfolio with iPDM and zone controllers — two new, forward-looking products for complex, intelligent control electronics, as well as eFuses as their key component.

The iPDM continuously monitors the power supply in the vehicle using built-in eFuses and corresponding software. Potential failure risks, such as cable overheating, can be identified

and rectified before they become critical.

The basic functionality of safety-related driving functions in particular, such as driver assistance, steering, and braking systems, can be maintained at all times, fail operational.

While iPDMs primarily secure the power supply, zone controllers, FORVIA HELLA’s second key product in the field of intelligent, complex control units, have a much wider range of applications in terms of the collection, processing and forwarding of data.

In a connected network within the E/E architecture, zone controllers ensure that the electrical consumers in the respective vehicle zone receive the necessary energy and protect them from overload.

Zone controllers also collect data from sensors in the vehicle in real time, process it, and use it to control actuators, such as for windows, lighting

functions, or windshield wipers.

For both iPDMs, which have now been launched, and zone controllers, which will go into series production for another well-known automotive manufacturer in mid-2028, eFuses are key components.

While conventional fuses melt and become unusable in the event of a defect, eFuses are completely maintenancefree due to their reversible functionality.

This means they do not need to be installed in the vehicle in a freely accessible location. As a result, the weight of the wiring harness can be reduced by up to 25% thanks to increased flexibility in the installation space and more precise fuses.

FORVIA HELLA has consistently

further developed its eFuses for zone controllers and future iPDM product generations. With its highly integrated intelligent, configurable and scalable (iConF) electronic fuse, FORVIA HELLA is the first auto supplier to combine an eFuse with a specially designed integrated circuit chip and intelligent control software. This further reduces the installation space, lowers component requirements, and enables intelligent data acquisition and processing.

The iPDMs and zone controllers are developed at our headquarters in Germany and at technical centres in Romania and India.

Essential diagnosis advice for clutch inspections

Free online training from Valeo helps avoid slippage and premature failure

Valeo Service UK is helping garages and vehicle technicians sharpen their skills with a free training module on clutch inspection, now available on the Valeo Tech Academy platform.

Designed to provide clear, practical guidance, the session highlights the key steps to diagnose and prevent premature clutch failure.

Presented by Valeo technical trainer, Stewart Lynch, the module takes viewers through the common issues technicians encounter when inspecting a removed clutch.

“Grease contamination on the friction disc is one of the most common culprits,” Lynch said. “It can cause slippage, reduce power transmission e ciency, and accelerate wear. Think of it like trying to sprint in greased-up shoes, it’s not going to end well.”

The training also covers essential workshop practices, such as supporting the gearbox correctly during removal and refitment. Improper handling can

cause misalignment, putting extra stress on the clutch components and leading to early failure.

Technicians are guided on inspecting oil seals, clutch return straps, input shaft and clutch hub grooves, and the clutch hydraulic command system, all crucial for smooth, reliable clutch performance.

“By understanding the visual signs of defects and addressing them promptly, garages can prevent unnecessary breakdowns and avoid costly comebacks,” Lynch said. “It’s about doing the job right the first time and keeping customers satisfied.”

The module is part of Valeo Tech Academy’s growing

library of free, IMI-certified training content, which covers everything from traditional maintenance and repair to hybrid and electric vehicle systems, as well as ADAS.

Courses are designed to be engaging and interactive, with gamified elements and assessments to help technicians track their

progress.

Complementary resources are also available via Valeo Tech Assist, including fitting guides, technical bulletins, tips and tricks.

In addition, technicians can earn rewards through the Valeo Specialist Club loyalty programme.

Valeo told Aftermarket last November that courses provided by its academy would help reduce skills shortages in the auto sector, particularly around work with EVs and ADAS.

The automotive aftermarket specialist’s academy boasts more than 50 hours of material covering EVs and hybrid vehicles, taking in security basics, advanced diagnostics and troubleshooting. ADAScentred content adds further hours of training.

Driving investment into the future

Aftermarket editor John Shepherd heads to Kent to see how award-winning D&D Autos’ commitment to customer service and staff wellbeing is paving the way for continued business success

If there was an award for the warmest of welcomes, I have to say D&D Autos would win hands down.

From the moment I arrived (ambling in via the service bays to the surprise of the team busy at work there) to eventually meeting the reception and front of house staff — on my way out — it was the friendliest of welcomes.

And the Ashford business has a lot to smile about, having been started by Derek Pestridge, at a nearby site in Victoria Road in 1983.

Derek spotted the original garage site while out for a run. He was later joined by business partner Dave — and D&D Autos was soon off and running into the commercial fast lane.

The business remained at the original site until 2009, growing to occupy four units and employing 13 staff, until increasing business demand and parking limitations led to the search for a larger site.

In 2009, the company moved to its current one-acre site on Orbital Park, which has allowed for significant expansion.

Today, the second generation of this family business employs around 25, led by Derek’s children — daughter Lorraine Fuller (operations manager) and sons Matthew Pestridge the MD, and workshop manager Richard Pestridge.

Matthew’s wife, Kim, is also involved in the business, responsible for training coordination and staff wellbeing, which more than plays to her qualifications as a mental health first-aider.

Lorraine and Matthew took time out to talk me through operations, which continued apace in what has been a Bosch Car Service member since 2005.

The workshop setup includes 13 bays and two drive-through MOT bays, where two full-time MOT testers can handle up to 40 tests daily, although this is typically kept to around 20.

In terms of vehicles handled onsite, Matthew said the business is shifting focus back toward the VW Group and German marques but is otherwise multimarque.

And further investment in equipment and infrastructure is an ongoing consideration, with the potential for onsite expansion. However, as Lorraine pointed out with a smile and a wink to her brother, that’s still a topic for discussion and agreement on a business plan!

Lorraine and Matthew clearly have a great professional chemistry and their enthusiasm for driving D&D was clearly shared by everyone I met.

Both told me of the increasing emphasis on professional diagnostics, ongoing technician training, and

embracing modern vehicle technologies.

There is also significant focus on overall wellbeing for all involved, with Kim Pestridge taking the lead on that, having introduced wellbeing boards, stress risk assessments, and mental health first aid.

Automotive industry charity Ben would welcome these initiatives, which at D&D have been expanded to include regular team breakfasts, awareness sessions, and confidential support where necessary.

Indeed, the garage is among nominees for Ben’s Workplace Health & Wellbeing Award in this year’s Top Garage competition.

The wider team includes senior front-of-house sta such as Oliver

Kolsterham and the company also has a clear structure for technicians, with progression encouragement from apprentice through to senior and specialist roles.

Matthew said D&D’s retention of apprentices is strong, with several qualifying through the Bosch training programme and staying with the business.

The powerhouse team has also driven the garage to take part in competition challenges. Matthew said the firm welcomes and highly values Top Technician and Top Garage, viewing them as excellent benchmarking and motivation tools.

After finishing in the top 10 of the Top Garage competition for those with more than 10 employees in 2023, D&D won the ultimate prize and took the Top Garage accolade home in 2024.

Winning Top Garage was seen as a major achievement, enhancing team morale and providing valuable feedback for business improvement.

He praised the process of competition judging as rigorous and fair, and said

all sta become involved in the awards process, attending ceremonies and sharing in the recognition of industry peers.

Meanwhile, marketing e orts include local press releases, social media updates, and community engagement such as supporting local football clubs and charities. Sta are also encouraged to contribute technical articles and share unique case studies for industry publications.

As for the future, Matthew and Lorraine are committed to continued investment in training and progression to ensure talent retention and maintain the firm’s reputation for excellence.

Comline reveals ABS rings and sensors fitting fix

Comline has issued a new technical bulletin to address a common fitment issue relating to brake discs with integrated ABS rings. These are prevalent on Citroën and Peugeot models.

Comline’s brake disc range includes many applications with factory-fitted ABS rings. But technicians have reported issues with ABS sensor alignment when fitting them — usually due to corrosion.

Corrosion around the ABS

sensor mounting point can push the sensor out of place so, when a new disc is fitted, this closes the required ‘air gap’ between the ABS sensor and ABS ring, causing them to touch.

Getting to the root cause of brake squeal

Delphi’s expertise on display at a GSF TechFest in tackling a common issue faced by garages

Delphi took centre stage at GSF’s recent London TechFest London by bringing its latest workshop solutions and expert guidance directly to vehicle technicians.

The September grand finale at Wembley of this year’s TechFest series, which saw more than 70 leading suppliers and hundreds of garages in attendance, offered the chance to explore cuttingedge technology, engage with industry experts, and discover solutions that deliver real garage benefits.

Adding to the excitement, Luke Garratt, UK technical manager at Delphi, led a session on the main stage titled ‘What’s that Noise?’, offering a definitive guide to eliminating brake squeal.

Technicians discovered the root causes of brake noise and learnt practical techniques to minimise complaints in the workshop.

“Brake squeal remains one of the most common issues garages face and it can be frustrating for both

technicians and customers,” Garratt said.

“Brake squeal can happen on any vehicle, with any technician, and using any brand. It’s a huge drain on time and resources for workshops, distributors, and manufacturers alike.

“Our session at GSF TechFest gave attendees the insights and confidence to deliver quieter, safer, and more reliable braking every time.”

Delphi’s original equipment knowledge of modern braking systems underpins the training it provides at Delphi Academy.

Today’s brakes are smarter and safer than ever, with advanced electronic controls that manage not just stopping power but how and when a vehicle stops.

By combining OE-aligned components with diagnostics, support and training, Delphi ensures technicians can understand, service, and optimise today’s braking systems.

T‘Braking news’ from TPS

Boost in parts o ering adds to biggest ever products range

PS, supplier of Volkswagen Group approved genuine parts to the independent motor trade, has boosted its braking o er to garages — which the firm said means the biggest range of braking products ever made available to its customers.

More braking parts are now available following the launch of the ‘Brands at TPS’ parts o ering. This has seen an expansion in the range of products available through TPS’s 83 UK centres, by partnering with industryleading third-party brands renowned for producing highquality mechanical parts.

Since the launch,

aftermarket brands Bosch, Mahle, SKF, Niterra and ZF have been welcomed into the product family. Both Bosch and TRW (a sub-brand of ZF), will provide brake discs, pads and shoes as part of the range available.

TPS is initially o ering up to around 2,000 third-party parts, including braking products, with plans to increase this to over 10,000 as the ‘Brands at TPS’ range develops and new third-party brands come on board.

Adam Hockley, VW Group parts product manager, said:

“The addition of ‘Brands at TPS’ supplements TPS’s existing range of VW Group approved genuine parts.

Designed to t rst time, saving workshops labour time and money

‘Brands at TPS’ braking parts are ideal for older vehicles, where genuine parts may not be an option, Hockley said. However, VW Group approved genuine parts remain the best choice available for garages when deciding which parts to recommend and fit to their customers’ vehicles.

“There are also the commercial benefits… designed to fit first time, they save labour time and money in the workshop and the residual value in the vehicle is also retained.”

As part of VW Group’s rigorous testing procedures, approved genuine brake pads are subject to four times the number of tests recommended by ECE R90 regulation — the legal standard

for brake pads manufactured in Europe.

Additionally, the brake pads contain 25 key materials, over three times the minimum required — resulting in lower wear, increased performance and longer service life.

As well as the safety, performance and the firsttime fit assurances that come with fitting VW Group approved genuine brake parts, TPS customers can also benefit from significant discounts through promotions and deals.

In November, as part of the build up to TPS’s Black Friday promotion, customers will be able to receive a free Quantum Brake and Clutch Cleaner from TPS when they buy genuine brake discs and pads on the same order.

There are also TPS’s regular monthly o ers, which provide a series of discounts across a full range of parts and consumables, with braking parts featured among them.

Visit tps.trade/about-tps/ our-ranges#genuine-parts for more information about VW Group genuine parts or contact your local TPS centre.

Technicians get fitting advice for replacement kits to control emissions

Aftermarket hot end emissions products manufacturer, BM Catalysts, is helping technicians reap the benefits of its extensive range of fitting kits — by stressing the importance of using new fittings when replacing an emissions control product.

As well as frequent additions to its range of emissions control products, BM Catalysts also ensures, where required, technicians have access to the accompanying mounting components, with fitting kits being launched as standard with most new-torange products.

Kits can include anything from gaskets and clamps to washers and springs, as well as specialist nuts and bolts.

James Saunders, technical director at BM Catalysts, said fitting kits are a small but important factor to consider when buying or fitting a replacement emissions control product.

“The benefits of using a new fitting kit outweigh the costs and we encourage technicians to utilise the kits in our range to help prevent invalidating warranties and the complications that can

arise from trying to reuse old or existing fittings.”

Over time, gaskets can su er wear and tear which could cause them to break. Fitting new gaskets at the time of replacing the unit itself helps eliminate this risk and creates a better, tighter seal. With manifold catalytic converters, this means that gases are less likely to leak.

“As manifold gaskets are compression gaskets, it’s unlikely even the most skilled of technicians will be able to get them in the exact same position again if they intend on reusing them,”

Using the kits can help prevent invalidating warranties

Saunders said.

Much like gaskets, support rubbers can deteriorate and break over time, with rubber known to perish with age. Failure to replace worn support rubbers or hangers can allow too much movement in the exhaust, which could cause damage to the replacement unit.

Should an underfloor unit become detached and hit the ground, it could potentially destroy the internal monolith, requiring a costly replacement.

Rusty nuts and bolts can sometimes lose threads, meaning they may not be long enough to fit the new unit — something usually not

discovered until the unit is about to be fitted onto the vehicle. Buying replacements in advance may help avoid delays or unnecessary complications.

What’s more, springs can lose their strength and so cannot hold joints together e ectively, thus allowing the joints to blow.

The company is also warning against the use of exhaust paste. Using this in front of a catalytic converter to try and rectify fitting issues will invalidate the unit’s warranty. BM Catalysts recommends using a kit designed specifically to fit the unit to the vehicle to avoid complications and possible warranty failures.

The firm’s fitting kit coverage boasts 87% coverage of its catalytic converters, 98% of its DPFs, 100% of its SCRs, and 90% of its pipes, while also covering 100% of its top 100 parts.

Visit www.bmcatalysts. com to see the full BM Catalysts parts range.

As well as frequent additions to its range of emissions control products, BM Catalysts ensures that technicians have access to the accompanying mounting components, with fitting kits being launched as standard with most new-to-range products. Kits can include anything from gaskets and clamps to washers and springs, as well as specialist nuts and bolts.

Driving down emissions

Despite the rise in the number of EVs, turbocharged internal combustion engines remain dominant in the service and repair sector.

Industry forecasts project a 10% plus growth in the turbocharger market by

2030, with the independent aftermarket expected to account for more than 50% of the replacements, within a decade.

Driving the growing demand are stricter emissions regulations, the prevalence of downsized engines and the increasing

complexity of turbocharging technologies.

In this vibrant market, Nissens Automotive has positioned itself as a leading provider of premium aftermarket turbochargers.

As the demand for turbocharged engines continues to grow, Nissens

stands ready to meet the challenges of the evolving market, ensuring that aftermarket professionals have the products, technical insight and support they need to succeed.

Boosting performance Sparking efficiency

Motaquip has expanded its engine management and emissions portfolio — 11 fuel vapour valves (FVV) and 19 NOx sensors — to meet growing demand for the components in the automotive aftermarket.

The new products ensure vehicles remain efficient and compliant with environmental regulations, Motaquip said.

Additionally, the range helps to reduce oil dilution and engine wear, support fuel efficiency, and is designed to prevent clogging. And from a technician’s perspective, no specialist tools are required when fitting the FVV.

To meet stringent Euro 6 standards, particularly the sharp reduction in NOx limits

for diesel vehicles, modern exhaust systems rely heavily on real-time data from NOx sensors.

Motaquip said its NOx sensors complement its existing range of engine management and emissions products.

Visit https://motaquip. com/engine-management/ for latest information.

DENSO says an effective and inexpensive method of combatting a failed MOT emissions test — and ensuring the lowest possible levels are passed into the atmosphere from an ICE vehicle — is to upgrade spark plugs from standard nickel to its iridium twin tip (TT) plugs.

Finer electrodes make these improvements possible, with iridium TT having a ground electrode of just 0.7 mm diameter and the centre electrode even smaller at 0.4 mm, DENSO said.

These finer electrodes provide less masking to

the flame and significantly reduce flame quenching, compared to larger nickel electrodes. The flame is therefore able to grow more quickly, burning more of the fuel and providing more efficient combustion, enabling the fuel to be used more efficiently and reducing CO2 emissions.

The OE supplier said its components provide the ideal replacement solution when workshops are servicing and repairing both petrol and diesel engines.

the tricky arena of DPF cleaning,” said Mike Schlup, MD of Kalimex, the UK distributor of the JLM Lubricants range of trade-trusted additives.

“Traditionally mechanics have had to remove the DPF from the vehicle for cleaning with significant investment in machinery. Many still do — or send it to a specialist. However, with training and a modest investment in kit, they can clean even the dirtiest DPF on the vehicle.”

The attitude shift to additives

Go back 15 years and the idea that additives could sometimes fill the space reserved for a part would have been dismissed as laughable.

Yet today we have trade-trusted additives at the top table. The global shift from parts to products and to repairing vehicles over replacing them,

has ushered in a new way of working for technicians — where saving time in the workshop without sacrificing standards — is critical.

And with motorists delaying services, mechanics are o ering solutions, mindful of how long they spend on a vehicle.

“Nowhere is this more evident than in

JLM Lubricants’ additives are renowned for extending the life of parts. For example, the JLM Emission reduction treatment and our range of DPF products will extend the life of the DPF and the catalytic converter.

It’s our job to convey the superiority of these formulas compared to the cheap-as-chips products found in the supermarket, said Schlup.

“Additives are here to stay. It’s about ensuring the right ones make their way into the workshop.”

Keeping the supply chain rolling in uncertain times

Independent tyre retailers are being guided toward strategic inventory flexibility as global trade uncertainties create unprecedented volatility in pricing and supply chains.

That’s the message from Point S UK, which is working closely with tyre manufacturers to best advise its members during times of economic and market fragility.

Drawing on intelligence from its collaborative relationships with tyre manufacturers worldwide, Point S reports that the entire supply chain is adapting inventory strategies in response to tari uncertainties.

The firm’s insight is bolstered by its group’s presence in 51 countries,

selling around 19 million tyres a year.

Point S said stockpiling activity is at its lowest point in nine years — citing data published earlier this year in the GEP Supply Chain Volatility Index. Manufacturers and retailers alike are taking measured approaches to inventory levels as they navigate duties on imported automotive components and ongoing trade tensions between major economies.

UK managing director at Point S Tyre & Autocare Ali Yilmaz said: “Our global network enables us to share market intelligence between manufacturers and retailers that helps both sides make informed decisions.

“We’re seeing collaborative approaches to inventory management as everyone in the supply chain adapts to

an environment where costs can shift rapidly. Even our manufacturing partners are emphasising flexibility over fixed commitments.”

According to Point S there are several reasons for the current uncertainty, including the impact of US tari policies a ecting global supply chains, post-Brexit challenges with Chinese anti-dumping duties, and the World Trade Organization’s forecast that global merchandise trade could decline by up to 1.5% this year.

The UK’s dependency on imported raw materials makes it particularly vulnerable to these disruptions, with delays at ports and customs regulations creating additional cost pressures.

As a result, Point S said it is guiding its UK members toward responsive inventory

Vredestein welcomes test result

Vredestein’s Quatrac has been awarded first place in a prestigious annual group test of all-season tyres, receiving an ‘exemplary’ rating.

strategies that balance opportunity with prudent risk management.

The network recommends maintaining agile inventory policies, using collective buying power to navigate price volatility, and working closely with manufacturing partners to optimise timing of purchases.

“This market requires partnership thinking rather than speculation,” Yilmaz said.

The rating came from German automotive magazine Auto Bild Allrad, after testing the tyre alongside 10 other all-season tyres in snow, wet and dry conditions. Testers assessed tyres in the popular 215/55 R 17 size, all fitted

to a VW T-Roc. Extensive dry and wet tests were conducted in Germany, while snow performance was assessed in New Zealand, simulating harsh European winter conditions.

Chief technology o cer of brand owner Apollo Tyres, Daniele Lorenzetti, said earlier this month: “As a pioneer of the all-season category, we are continuing to invest in research and development to maintain our leadership position, and we are already looking ahead to the launch of a significant new Vredestein product in this space next year.”

Innovators mark milestone on-the-road partnership

Industry innovators

Tyron Runflat and UK mobile tyre fitting network Hometyre are celebrating a 21-year partnership milestone.

Tyron is known for innovative products including the Tyron Multi-Band — which keeps the tyre attached to the wheel in the event of a blowout or puncture, helping drivers reach a place of safety.

In the UK, Hometyre dominates Tyron’s mobile fitting network, installing hundreds of Tyron’s lifesaving bands each year. Hometyre’s expertise ensures Tyron products are fitted with precision and care — recently installing over 400 bands onto specialist blue light fleet vehicles alone.

Tyron director Peter Simson said: “The only thing more

important for tyre safety than having Tyron bands fitted on vehicles, especially if you live a long way from your nearest garage, is having the band

Tyre checks to a tea!

Sheffield-based tyre inflation expert PCL is urging motorists to do their bit on tyre safety, saying checks are quick, vital and take less time than making a cuppa.

That was the key message of PCL’s campaign in support of TyreSafe’s annual Tyre Safety Month in October.

Tyresafe, the road safety charity that works across the aftermarket, said surveys show that more than 70% of men and women are more stressed about vehicle maintenance every month that relationship issues.

PCL said TyreSafe’s advice is: “Life has enough pressures — don’t let tyres

professionally fitted. “This is where Hometyre come in to ensure the job is done correctly. We are proud to have worked with Hometyre for over two decades, transforming tyre safety one wheel at a time.”

be one.” The company is urging everyone to conduct a

three-step plan once every month: check air pressure, tyre condition and tread.

PCL said the process need only take two-to-three minutes, less time than the four-to-five minutes to make a “proper Yorkshire brew”.

Stuart Lovatt, TyreSafe chair, said: “If every road user made tyre checks part of their routine, the positive impact on road safety would be immense. PCL’s campaign shows just how quick and easy it can be — faster than making a cup of tea.”

PCL has manufacturing plants in England and several other countries from which it exports worldwide. Visit www. pclairtechnology.com for details and advice.

Mighty Oak marks 45 years of growth

UK-based independent tyre wholesaler, Oak Tyres, is celebrating its 45th anniversary.

Launched as a family-run tyre retail business the firm today is a global distributor.

Now exclusively home to the Landsail, Delinte, Aptany, Evergreen, and Linglong brands in the UK, Oak has also created and launched its own brands, Davanti and Envoy.

The firm also supplies tyre fitting consumables including tyre valves, wheel weights and tyre mounting paste to its network of independent garage owners.

Branching out: Oak’s newest warehouse in Warrington

Peter Cross, commercial director, said Oak now has seven warehouses stocking a total of 900,000 tyres across premium, mid-range and budget ranges.

“As a family-run business,

these achievements are something we are all incredibly proud of and we

want to take this moment to thank everyone who has been a part of our journey.”

Workshops ‘drive investment in EV skills and tech’

Over 80% of UK workshops are now ready to service EVs and investment in skills is increasing across a sector that is worth more than £17 billion to the UK annually, according to a landmark industry study.

Analysis by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders has revealed that four in five garages are investing in the skills and tools needed to maintain EVs and advanced safety technologies.

SMMT’s latest aftermarket report, ‘Jobs, growth, mobility – what the aftermarket needs to deliver’, said ongoing investment will ensure drivers rapidly upgrading to safer, greener cars have ample service provision while helping accelerate the UK’s transition to net zero.

Now SMMT is calling on the government to introduce capital investment relief

for vehicle test stations and workshops upgrading equipment to meet enhanced MOT standards.

A series of recommendations in the

report include ensuring access to technical repair and maintenance data for independent operators and providing adequate funding for the Driver and

Vehicle Standards Agency’s Market Surveillance Unit, to effectively monitor use of non-compliant replacement parts being used on-road and illegal modifications.

According to the study, conducted for SMMT by Censuswide, the aftermarket sector is crucial to the British economy, turning over £62.2 billion and supporting at least 339,000 jobs.

Nearly 80% of respondents said they were equipped to service and maintain ADAS systems, with 83.5% expecting to increase spending on ADAS training and equipment over the next 12 months.

There are an estimated 1.6 million electric cars on UK roads, with EVs now accounting for more than a fifth of all new car registrations — a proportion that SMMT said must almost quadruple to 80% of the new car market by 2030 under

the zero-emission vehicle mandate.

However, according to a separate study by Bridgestone, motorists across the UK continue to be charged with uncertainty when it comes to EVs.

Bridgestone’s research, conducted earlier this year, indicated that 40% of drivers remain uncertain about EV adoption, which represents a significant jump from 27% in 2024 and 22% three years ago.

The high upfront cost of purchasing an EV is a leading deterrent for 59% of respondents, up from 42% in 2024, Bridgestone said.

Access to charging infrastructure remains a barrier for 62%, though this figure has seen a slight improvement from last year’s 68%. Charging costs are also a worry for 53%, while nearly half still cite range limitations as a key concern.

AI boost for EV battery innovation

AI software provider Monolith has joined forces with e-powertrain development and UK-based testing services provider, CamMotive, to provide engineers with the tools to run more efficient, insightful, and scalable battery tests.

Monolith said the collaboration will combine its AI platform with CamMotive’s real-world battery data, to help engineers detect complex failure characteristics during EV battery development.

The partnership is

implementing a ‘hybrid’ modelling technique for anomaly detection in the battery testing process. It combines physics-based simulations and machine learning methods to identify issues that may not be detected by traditional rulebased detection systems.

Richard Ahlfeld, CEO and founder of Monolith, said: “Training machine learning models with robust, realworld data is what makes AI truly effective, as it means engineers can find reliable ways to save time, achieve

performance gains and reduce costs.”

CamMotive director Bruce Campbell said the partnership will help detect potential issues earlier, streamline workflows, and enable engineers to focus on delivering valuable data analysis for our customers.

CamMotive is also looking into the integration of an advanced AI toolkit to reduce reliance on physical testing and streamline workflows, using the Monolith platform to support earlier fault detection.

Garage charging solution designed to beat the grid

TUAL and Polarium Energy Solutions have announced a partnership to provide dependable, fast charging of EVs independently of the grid, such as garages and industrial sites.

The agreement will see TUAL’s battery-buffered DC

PowerUp Charger utilise Polarium’s new lithium iron phosphate battery technology.

The collaboration uses Polarium’s modular, intelligent battery systems designed for safety, scalability, and remote connectivity — enabling

TUAL’s PowerUp Charger to deliver reliable, efficient EV charging.

Polarium said its battery systems also offer realtime insights into state of charge, health, predictive maintenance, and rapid firmware updates.

Overdue step in right direction for apprenticeships

Overdue step in right direction for apprenticeships

A new government target of getting two-thirds of young people into higher-level learning marks vital progress. But Emma Carrigy, head of research, careers and inclusion at the IMI, says it does not go far enough and urgent action is still needed

Over the past decade, no sector has transformed more rapidly than automotive. Driven by an unprecedented wave of new technologies designed to make vehicles safer, cleaner and more e cient, the industry now faces enormous pressure across every area.

With over 14,000 vacancies currently unfilled, many businesses are already struggling with damaging skills shortages, and others fear they soon will.

Attracting new talent and upskilling the existing workforce has therefore never been more critical, not only for the success of automotive businesses, but also for the safety of everyone on the road.

Apprenticeships have long provided an e ective way for automotive employers to bring in fresh talent, and the range of roles now available through this route is expanding rapidly. As vehicles — and the businesses that support them

— become more digital and data-driven, apprenticeships now o er exciting career opportunities both in and beyond the workshop.

The Institute of the Motor Industry welcomes the government’s shift away from the outdated target of sending 50% of young people to university, and towards building a future workforce grounded in technical education and apprenticeships. However, while this represents an important step in the right direction, it is only the beginning.

The IMI has long argued that apprenticeships and technical education must stand shoulder to shoulder with university degrees, equal in status, funding and career opportunity. It is encouraging that policymakers now recognise this principle, but “gold-standard apprenticeships” must amount to more than rhetoric.

To make the system work, the UK needs clear definitions, funding reform, better support

Future workforce grounded in technical education and apprenticeships

for employers in accessing levy funds, and a stronger focus on completions, retention and wage progression The action can’t just be focused on the number of apprenticeship starts.

The automotive industry stands at a pivotal moment. The transition to EVs, the wider adoption of ADAS, and the growing demand for digital and data expertise are reshaping the sector. Yet the persistent skills gap is holding back productivity, weakening the economy, and — most alarmingly — threatening road safety.

Small and medium-sized enterprises, which form the backbone of the industry, urgently need additional

support and reform of the Apprenticeship Levy. At the same time, employers must do more to inspire the next generation with clear, inclusive and rewarding career pathways.

Initiatives such as the IMI’s ‘More to Motor’ campaign have made important progress in widening access and improving retention, but there is still a long road ahead.

As the professional body working hand-in-hand with the industry, the IMI is uniquely positioned to lead this transformation. Our ‘Driving the Future of Automotive Professionals’ manifesto (https://bit.ly/47nbp5O) sets out the urgent actions required and calls for closer collaboration to break down the barriers that restrict growth.

To truly secure the sector’s future, government and industry must work together and agree on what a genuine gold-standard for apprenticeships really looks like. And that conversation must happen now.

Championing diversity across auto sector

New Ben course to boost business while fostering ‘fairer, more respectful and more innovative workplace’

An equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) training course has been launched for employees in the automotive sector by industry charity Ben. The course covers the impact of EDI, strategies for recognising and addressing bias and how to champion diversity as a driving force for innovation and collaboration within organisations.

The four-hour course, deliverable either face-to-face or virtually, is designed to help automotive workers and their

employers foster an inclusive workplace culture, Ben said.

Course participants will have open conversations about the significance of EDI in the workplace, learn how unconscious bias operates and explore practical ways to embed inclusive practices across their organisation.

Ben Training is rooted in support as all profits generated from course bookings support the charity’s mission of providing free, confidential health and wellbeing support for life

Compelling reasons for auto companies to invest in EDI training

to those who work, or have worked, in the automotive industry and their families.

Julie Hayes, specialist services lead at Ben, said: “We’re delighted to be

launching our new EDI training. This helps build a fairer, more respectful, and more innovative workplace while also driving business success.”

Hayes said that Ben, with over 120 years serving the automotive industry, was best placed to support automotive workers, o ering the training needed to help them to live well and work well, as well as working closely with employers to build a resilient and motivated workforce.

“There are many compelling reasons for automotive companies to invest in EDI training. Inclusive workplaces promote mutual respect and belonging, helping employees feel valued, improving engagement and retention.”

Diverse perspectives fuel creativity, innovation and stronger decisionmaking, while improved cultural awareness enhances customer relations and reputation, Hayes said.

In addition, proactive EDI training reduces the risk of discrimination claims and boosts overall business performance, and Hayes said she hoped automotive businesses will consider Ben as their next training partner.

Visit www.ben.org.uk/ editraining to find out more about the initiative and book EDI training, and www.ben. org.uk/partnerwithus for details about working with the charity.

John Shepherd meets the family business team that powers operations for one of the automotive sector’s best-known product distributors

Garages throughout the UK and Ireland will likely be familiar with a host of products they use and sell, all despatched via motor factors by Sussex-based JRP Distribution.

From a humble start-up business, launched in 1981 by husband and wife John and Gaye Page, the company was very much a family affair.

Even the couple’s children, Ollie and Kelly, found themselves getting involved, such as helping pack products for the firm’s then Sussex Automotives brand, which later became Tecnics.

As the family’s efforts increasingly bore fruit, John took on their first commercial premises in Tarring in 1987, where the business continued to thrive for the next 14 years, before moving to a nearby lock-up to cope with increased trade.

In 2008, they moved to larger premises in nearby Lancing, with another short-term expansion move to nearby Shoreham by Sea on the way to settling into the 60,000 ft2 that is now JRP’s headquarters and distribution hub on the outskirts of Chichester.

Today, JRP is still an independent family firm but with brother and sister

Ollie and Kelly running operations.

Ollie joined in 2005, bringing his sales and entrepreneurial focus to help spur growth, while Kelly, a chartered accountant, came on board in 2016. She brought a wealth of business acumen to the company after spending 20 years working in the City.

Having helped out as children, Ollie and Kelly now oversee a business that has more than 1,000 customers, equivalent to 3,500 storefronts.

“We still supply a few of the ‘Ma and Pa’ stores but today the business also caters for national accounts of big names

that you would readily recognise,” Kelly said.

Those include Halfords, which is the exclusive seller of JRP’s Simply Brands-owned ‘Fine and Dandy’ range — encompassing tech, gadgets, car and travel products and more.

Automotive accessories still represent about 80% to 85% of JRP’s sales, but Kelly said the firm has also ramped up its presence in the DIY market over the past five years.

Today, JRP manages over 4,000 SKUs, maintaining a broad range to serve as a one-stop supplier.

Business also caters for national accounts of recognisable big names

“Most brands distributed are on a sole basis, with a few legacy exceptions. We’ve got about 15 brands and a very small number of legacy ones on not-sole distribution.”

The company boasts a 95% typical fulfilment rate and sometimes as high as 98%. And while JRP does not o er nextday delivery, its current standard is still an impressive 48-hour dispatch.

Ollie said the company now only takes on sole distribution brands, working closely with strong brands in their own markets, including overseas.

“Strong supplier and logistics relationships are crucial, as is the role of the internal team.”

The products despatched from JRP on a daily basis is thanks to a dedicated workforce of about 40. Nearly 60% of sta have been with the company more than five years, which is an indicator of the firm’s stability amid growth.

In 2010, JRP was just shy of £1 million in terms of turnover. If it continues its pattern of doubling turnover every five

years, the targeted potential is more than

penetration in the automotive and DIY sectors and strengthening partnerships with brands, Ollie said.

Presentations and product demonstrations on the day featured Ecomotive, including its flagship CleanDrive product, an all-in-one fuel system cleaner for petrol, diesel and hybrid engines.

QUIXX, a German brand that focuses on repair and maintenance products, not just automotive, was also at the open day. QUIX products include a windscreen repair system suitable for garage professionals or DIY-ers.

Also making an impact was FrshSense which tantalised those present with a range of exciting fragrant air freshening products designed to excite the senses and send stale car cabin odours packing. The product also boasts a unique commitment to sustainability through a partnership with the Plastic Bank social enterprise.

The iconic JB Weld North American brand was also present, which is partnering with JRP to expand in key European markets, starting with the UK. US company Stoner was on hand to demonstrate its well-known range, including its Invisible Glass cleaning product and new wiper blades brand. There was also a chance for visitors to try the product on their own vehicles parked outside.
