EDITOR’S COMMENT

The Yacht Harbour Association (TYHA) is currently updating its rightly esteemed Code of Practice, with the assistance of leading international marina design experts employed at Marina Projects Ltd. This well-established guide is widely recognised within the industry for outlining best practices in marina design, construction and operation.

The progress to date and the structure of the new document were presented at the most recent TYHA conference and this briefing was well-received, reflecting the strong interest and support for the initiative. It marked an important step in the process and gathered valuable feedback from across the membership. In addition, there’s been a very positive response from the topic specific working groups and those consulted on the content.

I understand that TYHA and Marina Projects would like to thank all who have contributed to this collaborative approach to ensure that the final version is both comprehensive and robust. The document is currently undergoing some refinement, which will reflect this feedback.

A bespoke suite of graphics is also being developed to complement the new content and help bring the document to life, making it clearer and easier to digest.

Final reviews are now underway ahead of the official launch, which will take place at the ICOMIA World Marinas Conference in Venice from 15-17 October. This

event is the subject of the latest article by Dan Natchez, CMP, on pages 12-15, who points out that the IWMC provides a global forum to share lessons learned, discover best practices and collaborate on collective strategies. Dan acknowledges that while each region may face unique challenges, the industry thrives when ideas and experiences are shared across borders. He states that there is no one answer to all the issues, but believes we can all work together towards a bright future.

Those involved in updating TYHA’s Code of Practice are incredibly proud of the progress made in this industry benchmark that continues to evolve with the needs of the spectrum of modern marinas. The collaboration with Marina Projects and the input from members and working groups of the Association have been invaluable.

Mike Ward, Managing Director of Marina Projects, said: “We strongly support the comprehensive update of TYHA’s Code of Practice and are pleased to be collaborating with Jon White (TYHA’s General Manager) and the wider membership on this initiative. The industry is evolving rapidly, with shifting customer expectations and emerging trends. It’s therefore crucial that TYHA’s industry-led design and operational guidance not only keeps pace with these changes, but also helps shape and elevate standards across all areas of marina design and operation for years to come”.

Two more marinas join TransEurope

Jachthaven Antwerpen in Belgium and the Port de Plaisance du Tréport in Normandy, France, have recently joined TransEurope Marinas, significantly enhancing the organisation’s network across Northern Europe.

Jachthaven Antwerpen, with its two facilities on the Scheldt River, offers superb access to the vibrant city of Antwerp. Linkeroever Marina provides a tranquil, green setting, while the historic Willemdok Marina, which holds a Blue Flag, places boaters right in the cosmopolitan heart of Antwerp. Both locations are well-equipped with comprehensive services, including electricity, water, laundry, Wi-Fi and bicycle rentals, ensuring a comfortable stay for

all visiting yachts. Their unique accessibility via tide gates and canals adds to their appeal for those exploring this key European waterway.

Joining Normandy destinations like Dieppe and Fécamp, the Port de Plaisance du Tréport is a charming addition to the stunning white Côte d’Albatre. Centrally located within the city, this marina offers convenient access to numerous amenities and shops. With 100 berths plus ten dedicated visitor moorings and reliable 24/7 access around high water via its lock, it provides secure facilities, including modern sanitary amenities, water and electricity, making it an ideal facility when cruising along the French coast.

“Speaking from Belgium myself, it gives me immense pleasure, on behalf of the entire TransEurope Marinas association and its

members, to welcome Jachthaven Antwerpen and Le Tréport to our growing family,” said Maarten Desloovere, TransEurope Marinas Chair. “These two marinas truly embody the quality and diverse appeal we strive for. Jachthaven Antwerpen, with its dual offering in such a key European city, and Le Tréport, a beautiful new gem on the Normandy coast, significantly strengthen our network and enhance the cruising opportunities for all our members. We look forward to many years of fruitful collaboration.”

Julien Lebas, TransEurope Marinas Representative for France, added: “The Port de Plaisance du Tréport’s inclusion is particularly exciting for our French network. It’s a fantastic new stopover for boaters exploring the magnificent Côte d’Albatre, enriching our French destinations with its authentic charm, dramatic cliffs and vibrant town”.

Update for Blue Star Marina certification

The Brussels-based International Marine Certification Institute (IMCI) has been offering Blue Star Marina certification for marinas for several years. In May, a completely revised certification system was launched, including a new catalogue of criteria that has been adapted to the current requirements of marinas, customers and other stake-holders.

The established Blue Star Marina certification system offers

a transparent quality assessment with a star rating, comparable to the well-established hotel classification. If desired, the Blue Star Marina award can even be combined with the ISO 13687 series classification for marinas. This makes it easier for water sports enthusiasts to find the best yacht harbour and helps marina operators to optimise their work processes and make their service more efficient. Blue Star Marina

certification also helps operators to present themselves to other stakeholders such as banks, insurance companies and civic authorities.

The first certifications according to the new catalogue of criteria are already under way and there are further enquiries from various marinas in different countries. Another important step is the new co-operation with the ADAC, a German automobile club that

also supports boaters. Marinas that receive Blue Star certification benefit from preferential presentation in the new ADAC marina catalogue. At the same time, ADAC premium customers enjoy discounts in the Blue Star Marina certification process.

D-Marin’s Smart Sensors transform marina safety

More than 10,000 customers across D-Marin’s selection of premium marinas are now using Smart Sensors to enhance safety, security and peace of mind while away from their vessels.

Powered by the Sense4Boat platform, D-Marin’s Smart Sensors deliver round-the-clock monitoring and instant alerts for risks, including water ingress, battery overheating, fire and unauthorised movement. Installed in over 10,000 vessels to date, with more than 90% of eligible

customers already onboard, the technology has quickly become a trusted tool in proactive boat care. Alerts are integrated directly with the D-Marin App and received simultaneously by marina teams, who are on standby 24/7. On average, more than 200 critical alerts are resolved or investigated each month. Whether a boat is in dry dock or berthed, immediate response times from marina teams help ensure small issues don’t become major incidents. In these situations, every second counts and D-Marin’s teams are close,

trained and ready to respond at any time.

Matthias Gehring, Chief Digital Officer at D-Marin, said: “Safety is a top priority for every boat owner and at D-Marin, we’re committed to setting new standards in vessel protection. Our Smart Sensors detect potential issues in real time and our marina teams are ready to act immediately day or night. This combination of technology and responsiveness gives our customers the peace of mind that their vessel is always in safe hands”.

Parkstone Bay Marina goes green

In the world of boating, it can often seem that making sustainable choices won’t make a drop in the ocean in terms of impact. The consumer is often faced with trivial choices, be it a ‘new’ highly-priced boat soap or the addition of energysaving electronics. On the other hand, you have marinas that can make a huge difference within a local environment.

Parkstone Bay recognises this duty and continually aims to provide a sustainable service keeping Poole Harbour in Dorset, England, beautiful for future generations to come.

Over the past few years, there have been several major investments made with the aim to minimise any detriment from the marina’s operations. In 2019, the marina took its first significant step by installing a fully-bunded vessel washdown area with an interceptor, becoming the first in Poole to do so. This system collects and filters debris and run-off, removing harmful chemicals such as those found in antifoulants before being discharged back into the sea.

Parkstone Bay offers dry berthing for vessels up to 45 ft, utilising a Wiggins forklift for boats up to 32 ft and Telehandlers and Roodberg slipway trailers for larger vessels. In 2022, to address the environmental impact of launching and recovering over 120 vessels, the marina transitioned to HVO fuel, reducing operational CO2 emissions by up to 90%. It also acquired two fully electric forklift trucks for the boatyard, which has led to quieter and cleaner boat handling operations, enhancing the overall customer experience at the marina.

In 2023, a new solar array was fitted supplementing the electrical power for a large area of the site, providing up to 28

kW of power in full sunlight. The marina aims to install further panels in the future and minimise usage.

Regular events raising awareness about the impact of

boating, such as on the nearby Studland Bay conservation area, and positive boating practices are held, to which berth-holders, local residents, friends and families are invited to participate and discuss.

In a recent customer survey, a huge 82.8% of berth-holders expressed that they were happy to participate in events to support and raise awareness for the local environment.

BALI BENOA MARINA

A game-changer for Indonesia’s nautical tourism

Following an initial announcement on page 2 of the June issue, more comprehensive details of the new marina development in Bali have now become available. Marina Development Indonesia (MDI), in collaboration with Pelabuhan Indonesia (Pelindo), both limited liability companies, officially broke ground on the Bali Benoa Marina on 22 May, 2025. As Indonesia’s first fullservice international yacht marina, this landmark development marks a pivotal step in positioning Bali as South-East Asia’s premier yacht destination.

The Ministry of Tourism of the Republic of Indonesia recognises the project as a key driver in Indonesia’s transition from mass tourism to highvalue, sustainable travel. Bali Benoa Marina aims to enhance the visitor experience, stimulate local economic growth, expand marine tourism offerings and strengthen Indonesia’s position on the global yachting map as part of the Bali Maritime Tourism Hub master plan.

“The development of Bali Benoa Marina marks a pivotal moment in Indonesia’s transition toward upscale, sustainable tourism. By embracing world-class marine infrastructure, we are not only enhancing our appeal to global yachting communities, but also creating new economic opportunities for our coastal regions. This project aligns closely with our flagship agenda of upscaling Indonesia’s tourism profile through high-value, experience-based travel. We believe that marine tourism –rooted in our rich maritime heritage – can be one of Indonesia’s strongest offerings on the global tourism stage,” stated Widiyanti Putri Wardhana, Minister of Tourism of the Republic of Indonesia.

Master plan unveiled

During the ground-breaking ceremony, MDI revealed the comprehensive master plan design for Bali Benoa Marina and its 3.3

Maritime and yachting stakeholders at the ground-breaking ceremony.

hectare waterfront development, comprising:

● A hospitality zone with meeting, incentive, conference and exhibition facilities.

● A retail promenade featuring curated local and global brands.

● A lifestyle and events hub, including food and beverage outlets and marine lifestyle experiences.

The waterfront land master plan is led by 2M Design Lab, the appointed international waterfront architect, in close collaboration with Dr Eng Ir. I. Wayan Kastawan ST, MA, the spiritual architectural advisor of MDI. Guided by the Balinese philosophy of Sad Kerthi, the design incorporates six key principles: spiritual purification, forest and water conservation, ocean preservation, human development and universal balance, ensuring a regenerative coastal development rooted in cultural and ecological harmony.

I Nyoman Giri Prasta, Vice-Governor of Bali, said: “The success of this development will be measured not only in numbers, but in how well it upholds Bali’s traditions, empowers

our people and brings long-term value to the island”.

Project scope and timeline

Bali Benoa Marina will be developed in four key phases:

● Phase 1 (Q4 2025): Completion of Dock B with 40 berths, operational utilities and a welcoming station to begin pilot operations.

● Phase 2 (Q2 2026): Full roll-out of technical services, including vessel maintenance, repair workshops, fuelling systems and docking support

● Phase 3 (Q3 2026): Final expansion to 180 berths, including infrastructure for yachts up to 90 metres, customs/immigration clearance, provisioning services and integrated digital booking systems.

● Phase 4 (Q4 2027): Completion of waterfront business zones, including food, beverage and retail outlets, yacht sales offices and branded meetings, incentives, conference and exhibition venues to support a sustainable waterfront economy. Through its partnership with MDI,

Pelindo ensures the project aligns with broader maritime logistics strategies while supporting the government’s vision of diversifying tourism and strengthening coastal economies.

Prasetyo, Director of Strategy at Pelindo, emphasised: “The Bali Benoa Marina is a key anchor within the larger Bali Maritime Tourism Hub (BMTH), envisioned as a centralised gateway for superyacht marina, cruise ports and waterfront tourism experiences”.

World-class standards

Bali Benoa Marina is designed to meet international superyacht standards, featuring highperformance floating concrete pontoons designed by SF Marina in Sweden. These offer exceptional structural integrity, wave attenuation and long-term resilience in tropical marine environments.

Through a structured technology transfer program, SF Marina Indonesia now undertakes 100% of the pontoon manufacturing, assembly and installation under the onsite, direct supervision of a senior project manager from the

Swedish company. This collaboration ensures strict compliance with global standards while enhancing local expertise in marine infrastructure, advancing Indonesia’s ambition to become South-East Asia’s premier yachting destination.

Italian pedestal manufacturer Plus Marine will equip the marina with dockside utilities, offering integrated electricity and freshwater access at all berths, managed remotely via the Smartplus Cloud web-based system. Discover Luxury Indonesia (DLI) will lead the implementation of Quarantine, Immigration, Customs and Port protocols (QICP), provisioning systems and crew logistics, while also curating bespoke yachting routes and on-ground guest experiences across Bali and the Indonesian archipelago, ensuring seamless clearance, premium services and world-class destination experiences aligned with global luxury standards.

Bali Benoa Marina is developed in close collaboration with KSOP Benoa, as the Port Authority overseeing maritime safety, vessel traffic and port clearance. “Our mandate is to uphold international safety and clearance protocols so that every yacht entering Indonesian waters

is backed by efficient clearance and navigational safety whilst following the local regulatory compliance,” said Aprianus Hangki, Head of the Port Authority and Harbour Class II Benoa.

Local impact

Ulf Backlund, President Director of MDI, stated, “Over 3,000 direct and indirect jobs will be created – from marina crew and marine

technicians to hospitality and digital service roles. We are committed to building not just infrastructure, but a sustainable marine economy that improves lives and unlocks new business opportunities in Bali and beyond”.

MDI will also roll out a Marine Skills Development Program in partnership with local vocational institutions to build a future-ready workforce.

Privately funded and aligned with the Government’s tourism diversification strategy, the project meets growing demand for premium yachting destinations and is strategically positioned along key cruising routes from Australia and across South-East Asia.

Venice Since 1993, the ICOMIA World Marinas Conference has been the premier international gathering for marina professionals. Overseen by the ICOMIA Marinas Group , the conference attracts

Venice to host ICOMIA World Marinas Conference – will you be there?

The ICOMIA World Marinas Conference (IWMC) takes place every two years at various locations throughout the world and this year, which will be its 13th edition, the conference will be taking place in Venice, Italy, from 15-17 October. The venue for the three-day event is located on Certosa Island at

the first class, full-service Venezia Certosa Marina, a ‘safe harbour’ marina with over 400 boats protected by an innovative wetland breakwater created through reclamation.

The 54 acre island, much of which is a park, is strategically located in the heart of the Venice Lagoon and is part of the overall Venice

UNESCO World Heritage Site. With respect to its past, the island was home to Augustinian monks from 1199-1424 and then from 1424-1807 served as an important Carthusian monastery, with a large church dedicated to Saint Andreas. In the 19th century, the Austrians turned the island into a fortress, while in the 20th century, it served a new

purpose under the Italian military as a munitions factory. Later, during the 1980s and 1990s, it became a training ground for the Italian Lagunari (marines).

Today, the marina is transforming the remaining historic military buildings into a full-service marina with a boutique hotel within the Vencie Lagoon. Access is by ferry,

water-taxis or private boats, including unique direct public water connections from and to Marco Polo International Airport (VCE) not only for the venue, but to hotels using the Blue Line. There is also access to the city’s main islands via the public ferry service lines 4.1 and 4.2. One of Venice’s main tourist attractions, Piazza San

work sheds, for a world gathering, the atmosphere and physical layout foster a more intimate and relaxed setting, with a combination of both indoor and outdoor opportunities to socialise, relax, learn and take it all in.

The conference will take place in the reconditioned buildings, as well as fully utilising the outdoors, with tents for exhibitors and soaking in the culture and hospitality. The venue is different than most hotels and conference centres. While challenging for our hosts to convert previous military buildings, now

This year’s conference program is featuring international experts discussing current challenges facing the industry, while celebrating innovation and exploring opportunities in the world of marinas, offering a rich and wide-ranging agenda of more than 25 sessions and panels. These include: VIP Marina Customers; The Perfect Marina; Marinas and New Sources of Energy for the Green Transition; Marina Markets of the World; The Adriatic Sea Marinas, Figures and Trends; The Digital Transition and the ‘Smart’ Marina; Marina Certification; Marina Staff Training and Human Resources Management; Coastal Management and Marina Infrastructure; Global Marina Economics; How to Reach Social, Economic and Environmental Sustainability; Environmental Education in Marinas; Latest ‘State of the Art’ Marinas; New ‘Inspirational’ Marina Projects; Marina Marketing and the Theory of Destination Management; New Global Trends in Dry stack Storage; Marinas and the Boat Charter Industry; Yacht Clubs and Big Events in Marinas – the Success Stories; Future International Trends in Marina Regulation; Marinas as Energy Producers; Disaster Preparedness; The Key to Success – Putting it All Together and Making the Regulatory Agency Your Partner; Putting the Wow into Marina Destinations; and How to Mitigate Marina Risks through Proper Insurance.

Words like sustainability, green energy, carbon footprints, global warming and climate adaptation are common in today’s discourse, but the IWMC is about turning those words into actionable results. Presenters have been encouraged to go beyond buzzwords and offer real-world, scalable solutions. The

focus is not only on making marinas cleaner and more efficient, but also more economically viable, practical and community-inclusive.

Adding to the mix, specific boat manufacturers will be joining the conference, both as participants and exhibitors, regarding their approaches for integration with these ideas and goals, as well as how they are providing products that would be meaningful for marinas in their design and operation. Whether through electric propulsion systems, lightweight construction materials or energyefficient marina gear, these players add depth and diversity to the discussion.

The recreational boating and marina industries have weathered many storms – literally and figuratively. From Covid-19, global supply chain disruptions and increasing regulatory complexity to emerging issues like trade restrictions, economic uncertainties and changing demographics, adaptation has been crucial. Adaptation has also compelled the marina industry to share ideas and identify what plans and policies have worked and what was not so effective.

The IWMC provides a global forum to share lessons learned, discover best practices and collaborate on collective strategies. It acknowledges that while each region may face unique challenges, the industry thrives when ideas and experiences are shared across

borders. There is no one answer to all the issues, but we can all work together towards a bright future. The three-day event will have the program presentations and cocktail receptions on the first and third days, and a marina tour on the second day, with the second day ending with a gala dinner – a

celebratory event intended to capture the spirit of Venice and the shared vision of the marina community.

The gala dinner will also include the presentation of the ICOMIA Marinas Group’s 2025 Golden Cleat Awards, designed to honour individuals who have demonstrated

a true commitment to the global marina community. This year’s awards include the following two categories:

● Lifetime Dedication: Exceptional leadership, advocacy and dedication to the betterment of the world’s marina industry.

● Outstanding Mover & Shaker: An industry leader who has demonstrated outstanding efforts supporting development in sustainability, innovation and/ or environment protection. For more information regarding nomination procedures and submission deadlines type in your

International collaboration

With over 500 delegates expected, you’ll have countless opportunities for catching up with old friends, making new contacts, discussing issues and viewing new products as you engage with marina operators, designers, suppliers, manufacturers, regulators and researchers from around the globe. These conversations – whether over coffee, at an exhibit booth or during a sunset cocktail on the water –often lead to lasting partnerships and new perspectives. I have found that the IWMC conferences present more unique opportunities, as the numerous international backgrounds provide a melting pot of experiences. The wealth of information is abundant and learning how others have dealt with different problems and their perspectives is extremely insightful, not just in the designated time slots, but throughout the entire

time one is there.

The conference is heavily supported by Assomarinas, the Italian national marina association, as well as numerous government agencies and international organisations.

There are numerous accommodation options at all

prices and amenity levels within the Venetian islands, with public ferry or water taxi service widely available. However, delegates are advised that, due to Venice’s tourist popularity, early booking is strongly recommended. Aker Brygge Marina, Norway

Within a short walking distance of Oslo’s city centre, in the middle of the Norwegian capital’s most vibrant area, lies 180-berth Aker Brygge Marina. This popular haven has 50 berths reserved for visiting yachts ranging from 10-200 ft, which are available for both Summer and Winter rentals. Included in the price is access to electricity, water, Wi-Fi, toilets, showers, washing machine, dryer and a facility to empty septic tanks.

For more than a century, Aker

Brygge was the site of a long–closed shipyard, Akers Mekaniske Verksted, so the architecture at Aker Brygge is distinctive, with its combination of old, venerable shipyard buildings and modern architecture. It is now a vibrant commercial district, and the large open-air spaces and indoor shopping street are often used for photo exhibitions, concerts and pop-up events for fashion, art and culture. After a thorough renovation, the area has a fresh look and has attracted a wide variety of new restaurants and shops.

The pedestrian area along the waterfront is lined with restaurants with great views of the marina and the Oslo Fjord. In total, Aker Brygge’s restaurants have seating for 2,500 customers outdoors.

Aker Brygge is owned by Norwegian Property, which has sustainability goals for all its projects, and has a genuine desire for businesses to make a positive difference for the climate and

believes that there is a competitive advantage for Aker Brygge Marina in leading the way.

In recent years, for example, the company has established its own electric boat harbour where berthholders and visitors can hire a craft to view the scenery of Oslo Fjord without adding to water-borne pollution by using fossil fuels.

PUMP-OUT SYSTEMS

Hythe Marina supports growing demand for environmental sewage disposal

Abrand new, self-contained pump-out facility has just been installed next to the fuel berth in Hythe Marina Village by Warwickhire, UKbased sanitation specialist LeeSan. Operated by MDL, Hythe was the first marina village to be built in the UK. Located on Southampton Water’s Western shore, it is a unique development comprising a 206-berth marina and waterside homes, complemented by shops, restaurants, bars and a boutique hotel. There is storage ashore for over 120 boats and a slipway with ample space for trailer and car storage. Both petrol and diesel are available.

MDL recently contacted LeeSan and asked them to design a new black water pump-out solution, since the existing system was old, difficult to operate and not particularly efficient. However, the specification was complicated (and has taken a little

time to plan) because the unit was to be sited close to the fuel berth to improve accessibility. This meant that the LS30T peristaltic pump needed to be ATEX-rated – protected against explosion to the uninitiated – while still being robust, efficient, userfriendly and easy to operate!

The new system is a LeeSan LS200W-ATEX, featuring stop start function, and will be controlled by

Hythe’s on-site fuel/pump operator. It is housed in a stainless-steel cabinet with easy access for service. It can pump roughly 120 metres distance and incorporates a 12 metre suction hose with an ISO probe valve and a set of adaptors to suit all deck fittings.

The Green Blue, which was created by the Royal Yachting Association and British Marine, has developed

an online map to show which marinas, boatyards and harbours provide environmental facilities such as pump-out, black water/Elsan disposal, recycling, fresh water refill points, hazardous waste disposal and filtered/bunded boat wash-down.

Karl Sutcliffe, LeeSan’s Technical Director, commented; “It is fantastic to see more and more coastal marinas installing machines to help cut the amount of black waste dumped in our harbours and seas. The specialist team at LeeSan is able to design and install solutions for just about any application, so there is no reason for any marina not to offer this service in the future. Experience has shown us that installing these units generally drives additional business to the marina creating a win-win situation”.

Aluminium pontoon

Apontoon made from marine grade 6061 T6 aluminium alloy, with anodised surface and durable, strengthened structure, can be used to support floating structures such as waterside bars at marinas.

The durable floats are of high density, closed cell polyethylene, with a water absorption rate of less than 5%. They are resistant to ultra-violet light and sea water, and

do not promote electrolytic action. All fastener screws sets are made of AISI316 stainless steel. They can be manufactured to customers’ specific requirements and have a capacity of about 200-300 kg per square metre. The freeboard is approximately 500-600 mm.

Eco-friendly pedestal

Designed with the planet in mind, the Marconn Compact pedestal features a casing made from 100% recycled and recyclable polyethylene. This is a material without toxic agents, already used in many nautical products such as marine buoys and floating platforms. It is completely homogeneous and does not splinter or crack.

It withstands all weather conditions, as it does not absorb water or rot. It is resistant to salt, solar radiation and impacts. The through-colour composition also prevents visible fading due to the effects of sunlight over time.

Optional electricity and water meters are available, with or without reading windows, and illumination is provided by a 360-degree LED.

Compact pedestals come in a range of standard colours and customised shades can be supplied if necessary. Different transparency levels are also offered to either highlight or soften the look of the recycled material – without compromising Marconn’s ecofriendly approach. Anti-fouling membrane for buoys

Designed to meet the demanding needs of maritime environments, SabetoPROTECT is a revolutionary two-layer, self-vulcanising membrane manufactured with a UV-resistant polyisobutylene outer layer. It also resists biofouling when combined with the company’s optional PIB paint, preventing algae and barnacle build-up.

By preventing UV damage and biofouling, as well as eliminating the need for frequent maintenance trips, SabetoPROTECT cuts operational emissions significantly – up to 450 kg of CO 2 saved per buoy for each reuse.

Easy to apply with just a peel-and-stick approach, SabetoPROTECT enables marinas and harbour authorities to protect their equipment and the environment simultaneously.

The material’s ultra-dense surface prevents algae and other organisms from adhering and offers extended durability, with a documented lifespan of more than 65 years.

Successful first year at new service hub

The first year at Alewijnse’s Vilanova i la Geltrú site in Spain has exceeded expectations. Yachtowners and managers are increasingly choosing the new service hub located a short distance South of Barcelona, one of the leading superyacht centres in the Mediterranean. This success looks set to continue with the recent appointment of Alexander Plishkin, a seasoned professional with a strong reputation in the yachting industry, as the new site manager.

“The demand for service and refits in the yacht sector is growing rapidly,” said Account Manager Marcel de Vree. “Owners are looking for partners with expertise in electrification, automation and other modern technologies such as AV, navigation and communication systems.

“Our new Spanish service hub at Pendennis Vilanova in the port city of Vilanova i la Geltrú, SouthWest of Barcelona, is ideal for this. The Mediterranean is a popular destination for many superyachts seeking specialised services and facilities. Alewijnse can deliver high-end electrical services and consultancy on board both motor and sailing yachts, in collaboration with Pendennis Vilanova.”

Maurice Vlaming, Service Manager at Alewijnse, added: “Our presence in Spain allows us to respond more quickly and efficiently. Our service now covers the entire Eastern coast of Spain, from Barcelona to Malaga, with an additional hub in

Palma de Mallorca. Together, these Mediterranean locations form a strategic extension of our service sites in The Netherlands, Romania and Vietnam”.

With the arrival of Alexander Plishkin as site manager earlier this year, Alewijnse has enhanced its expertise in electrical engineering and automation. He stated, “With 25 years of experience in the maritime industry, I have built an extensive network. I know many ships, ship-owners and shipyards, and I am well-versed in all types of electrical systems, from power management and alarm monitoring to bridge systems, navigation, communication, propulsion and all other onboard electrical installations.

“I look forward to further

strengthening our service activities in this region. We work closely with our project location in La Ciotat in Southern France for electrical service and with our team in Palma de Mallorca for specialised navigation and communication needs of yachts and sailing vessels. Our teams are always ready to step in with additional capacity and to deliver the required expertise and experience.”

To ensure high-quality electrical engineering and service delivery, Alewijnse deploys its own engineers while also working with local specialists. “My passion lies in training young talent from the region,” confirmed Alexander Plishkin. “Over the next five to ten years, we aim to develop them into independent service engineers, who

can work on all types of vessels. This way, we will contribute to both Alewijnse’s growth and bring new skills to communities.”

Alewijnse is a well-established name in the yacht industry and, with more than 135 years of experience, can offer complete packages of electrical engineering solutions due to its collaboration with Tijssen Elektro, a specialist in yachts up to 60 metres.

Leon Melet, Team Lead Service Yachts, concluded: “You will find our systems on dozens of yachts worldwide. When these vessels require maintenance or upgrades, we are ready to assist from our location in Barcelona”.

Barcelona International Boat Show is revamped

The 2025 edition of the Barcelona International Boat Show will mark the beginning of a new journey that aims to significantly grow the event in the Catalan capital’s Port Vell, with the presence of a more exclusive showcase and leading brands. In addition, new activities and proposals will be introduced targeting professionals and major national and international buyers.

The event’s new direction, organised by Fira de Barcelona in collaboration with the National Association of Nautical Companies (ANEN), has been designed together with the leading companies in the industry represented in the Organising Committee, with the goal of improving the experience for exhibitors and visitors.

The show, which will take place from 8-12 October, has developed a new strategic plan to boost its quality by featuring larger boats, the participation of the top companies in the market and a greater number of international

shipyards in order to attract a more qualified audience with greater decision-making and purchasing power.

In this regard, efforts are being made to ensure that the Barcelona pier, where boats over 20 metres in length are expected to dock, will be added to the exhibition space at the Port Vell venue, alongside the Fusta, España, and part of the Marina Port Vell docks. To ensure an easy tour of the entire event, a shuttle boat will connect the Barcelona and España docks in the port.

Luis Conde, President of the event, stated: “With this new format, the goal is to take a leap forward among the major European boat shows in terms of the quality of its offering and the presence of large international brands, thereby helping to strengthen Barcelona’s position as the Spanish and European capital of sports and leisure boating”.

Josep Antoni Llopart, the event’s Director, added: “The 2025 edition marks the beginning of a new phase where we have focused on improving the quality of the

presentation to attract a more professional and international audience, with the goal of stimulating sales at the show”.

Jordi Carrasco, CEO of ANEN, concluded: “The Association values positively the course of the Barcelona International Boat Show to innovate and adapt to new market trends, and we are confident that this update will improve the experience for both exhibitors and visitors”.

In order to attract high-level visitors, the Barcelona International Boat Show will feature a hosted

buyers’ program inviting major international buyers, and will have a network of ambassadors, including major companies in the sector or yacht clubs, among others, to act as promoters of the show both nationally and internationally.

Another major attraction of this year’s edition will be a 2,500 square metre village, which will be set up in the Portal de la Pau area of Port Vell offering highquality gastronomy, among other activities.

Furthermore, the Barcelona International Boat Show will continue to focus on sustainability, the blue economy and innovation as key themes that will be addressed through a program of conferences and talks at the event’s Agora, co-ordinated by Port de Barcelona. The event will open on the first day exclusively for major buyers, industry professionals and the media.
