THE OFFICIAL CIRCLE OF FRIENDS INVITES YOU TO ATTEND INTERACTIVE WORKSHOPS! → Carlos Kleiber-Probebühne

As a key supporter of outreach activities, the Official Circle of Friends of the Vienna State Opera invites you to attend two participatory workshops:

1. Opera workshop: We build an opera: The Barber of Seville for children (and families). Participants of all ages are invited to develop and perform a mini-opera at high speed.

2. Dance workshop: Participants of all ages are invited to get an insight into the ballet Don Quixote and to dive into the work on a character role together with dancer Igor Milos.

SING ALONG → Stage & Auditorium

The Open Day ends on the main stage with a hosted sing-along programme including excerpts from popular operas. Once the visitors have left the theatre, they will all remember happily that they sang with soloists of the Vienna State Opera.

Employees from the Technical department and the in-house fire brigade present special equipment (spotlights, fog and steam machines, etc.) and reveal a few secrets from the magical world of theatre. The visiting public can also examine props from popular productions up close and even try their hand at operating spotlights as well as sound or special effects. There is also a screen for live camera recordings with real-time effects.

»TWO MINUTES WITH…« → Schwindfoyer

This is where you have the opportunity to ask everything you always wanted to know about the State Opera. Employees from all departments of the State Opera are available for brief personal chats at a long table. When the bell rings, everyone moves along a place and gets someone new to talk to – just like speed dating!

COSTUME PRESENTATION → Marmorsaal & Large Women Soloists’ Wardrobe

Impressive costumes and unusual props from the abundant inventory of the Vienna State Opera are on display. In the Large Women Soloists’ Wardrobe behind the stage, open to the audience as an exceptional opportunity, costumes are laid out as they would be in the run-up to a performance.

PHOTO WALLS → Schwindloggia

To be Don Bartolo or Zerlina just once, or to transform oneself into the Sleeping Beauty or Prince Désiré! Large photo walls with the heads of the figures cut out invite you to look through the holes from behind and slip into various wellknown opera and ballet roles.

EXHIBITION OF THE OPERA BALL TIARAS → Area around the Grand Staircase

The tiaras of the debutantes are always a special visual highlight of the Vienna Opera Ball. The exhibited collection allows the visitors to review some of the most recent opera balls.

Visitors can watch and listen to a rehearsal of the Bühnenorchester and experience up close how a performance is put together.

CHOIR REHEARSAL → Gustav Mahler-Saal

The grand ensemble of the choir appears on stage at the State Opera almost nightly. During the Open Day, visitors have the unique opportunity to dive into the challenging everyday life of rehearsals and experience the work of the singers and choir director up close.

Have you always wanted to take part in a real State Opera rehearsal? Senior performance director Katharina Strommer works on a scene from Die Fledermaus with singers of the State Opera and participants from the audience.

FOR CHILDREN

Young audiences can try on spectacular costumes from the inventory of the Vienna State Opera, make their way along a catwalk and have themselves photographed on a podium.

MAKE-UP & CHILDREN’S FACE PAINTING → Marmorsaal & Annexe

Employees from the make-up department provide insights into the world of transformation: make-up and hairstyle demonstrations, wig-making, etc. In addition, special costumes and make-up from various productions are presented in a series of photographs. The Annexe also accommodate the popular children’s make-up area again.

CHILDREN’S QUIZ RALLY → throughout the building

Have a guess and join in here! All children get a puzzle sheet of questions about the individual areas of the Open Day. Correctly completed sheets will be entered into a draw for a special prize after the Open Day. The completed children’s puzzle sheets can be handed in at any time in the Foyer, by the Grand Staircase.
