How to Prepare a Spa for Moving

Moving bulky and heavy items is a complex process that often requires the help of professionals. However, if you have chosen to proceed with a DIY move, you may need to be more patient when it comes to preparing your belongings for the move and carefully following instructions and best practices in handling certain items to ensure everything will be relocated safely to your new home.

You will need: Cleaning supplies Measuring tools Moving straps Furniture dollies Thick blankets

Plan and prepare your materials/equipment When moving heavy and bulky items like a spa or hot tub, it's important to carefully plan how the spa or hot tub will be (disassembled) and removed from the room and lifted to the moving vehicle. Measure the size of the spa or tub, as well as the areas where it will pass through to reach the truck. Before disassembling anything, make sure that it fits every entryway or corridor, especially if you have modified parts of the house after its installation.

Disconnect cords or tube Once you are sure that you will be able to navigate your way out with the spa or tub, you may start disconnecting all electrical and plumbing connections. Coil the cord and place it in a waterproof container or bag before storing it in the compartment of the spa. If there is no compartment, put labels on the cord and the container before packing it with other electrical items you will be taking during the move.

Relocate the spa or hot tub No matter what the size or weight of your tub or spa - - using wood to support its weight is highly recommended. This will also make it easier to slide the furniture dollies or use other moving equipment to relocate the tub and minimise damage such as scratches and (bumps). Whilst it is possible to safely move the spa by enlisting the help of friends, it would be safer to hire professionals who have adequate knowledge and the right equipment to move heavy and bulky items like your spa. Since they are used to performing such tasks, it won't take too much time and effort on your part to get the job done.

Drain the spa or hot tub After disconnecting and relocating your spa or hot tub outdoors, it is important to make sure that it is drained properly to avoid different kinds of damage caused by moisture. Since not all spa models are the same, there are also different ways to drain each model properly. If it's your first time moving your spa or hot tub, always refer to the manufacturer's guide and follow each step as closely as possible to minimise the risk of damage.

Packing and Final Prep As additional protection, you may use thick blankets or other materials to cover the spa and act as padding when loading the spa into the moving vehicle. This way, you can avoid scratches from the surface and prevent damages in case the vehicle is put under pressure when turning in tight corners or rough roads. If you are hiring professionals removalists, you can entrust them with the proper handling of your spa before it is loaded or unloaded from the vehicle.
