How to Prepare a Rug for Moving

When you're too busy sorting your belongings and packing several boxes, it's easy to forget about the items that can't be packed into big boxes. One of the items that are easily forgotten is the rug in your home. You may be considering just rolling up the rug and throwing it into the moving vehicle. However, this is not advisable since there are still some necessary steps that you need to do in order to move your carpet safely to your new home. You will need: Strings or rope Packing paper, blankets, or thick wrappers

Sort and decide which rug to take If you are using plenty of rugs at home, consider checking the condition of the rugs and decide whether they are worth the time, money, and effort to be cleaned and taken to your new home. If some of them are worn out or you're not too fond of certain pieces recycling or leaving them behind. Not only will this give you an opportunity to buy new ones, but also save time and effort in preparing and relocating them to the new place.

Prepare and clean the rug Proper care and maintenance is the key to keeping your rugs in good condition. If you're taking the rug when you move, it is important to thoroughly clean and dry the rug, especially if your goods will go into storage for some time. Use a vacuum cleaner to remove dust, bits of food, and other things that may be hidden in the fibres and underside of the rug. Once cleaned, leave the rug out in the sun for a few hours. You may also wash the rug or have it professionally cleaned. The latter is highly recommended if you have area rugs that have been soiled or slightly worn out from years of service.

Roll the rug Flip the rug so that the pile or front part of the rug is facing out when it is rolled up. The backing of the rug is more fragile and prone to damage when it is rolled up. Rolling the rug with the pile facing out can avoid damages such as cracks and strains on the backing. Roll the rug from the short side and make sure that the rug is tight and secure.

Wrap and tie the rug Secure the rolled rug with a string or rope. Once secured, wrap the rug using packing paper, thick blankets, or any wrapping material to provide additional protection. Secure the wrapper using a string, rope, or packing tape.

Position the rug in the vehicle When you load the rolled rug into the vehicle, avoid placing items, especially heavy objects, on top of the rug if it is placed lying down. Whilst it may be able to hold the weight of the other object, it may cause irreparable damage. It is also recommended that you position the rug in an upright position to maximise the available space in the vehicle.
