Divine Intervention

T

here’s a difference between a quantum moment in which one experiences instant personal transformation and a cosmic moment when one realizes he or she has just participated in a much greater plan. I had such a moment recently when my personal reality crashed full force into the reality of a stranger named Nick who was feeling desperate enough to end his life. It all started when I was selected as one of only 10 people world-wide to participate in a live teleconference with Dr. Wayne Dyer on Tuesday, December 3, 2013. Dr. Dyer is an internationally renowned speaker and author, known by many as the “father of motivation,” and one of my personal heroes. I’ve long held the vision of one day speaking with Dr. Dyer and asking all of my burning questions. I imagined it would be in person, but as it was turning out, my first personal interaction with Dr. Dyer would be on a phone line, thousands of miles apart, with my instructions being to ask exactly one question. In my enthusiasm at being selected for this rare opportunity I quickly announced it on Facebook and asked all my “friends” what one question they would ask Dr. Dyer. The response was overwhelming. The post quickly received almost 100 “likes” and the comments came flooding in. Out of all the comments received, one especially touched my heart. Randy Weeks posted, “This is exciting. I trust your heart and soul will provide you with the ideal question. You were given this opportunity for a reason, and I expect the question will be connected to, and congruent with, your insights, intention and selection for this very cool event.” Little did I know how accurate Randy’s words would turn out to be. Fast forward to the day of the teleconference and I’m scrambling to finish Dr. Dyer’s new book, I Can See Clearly Now, which is the source from which I᾿m supposed to draw my question. I had received an advance copy of the book only the day before and had planned to skim it in order to have an overview of the message it contained. However, I had been captivated by every page and had spent my time intensely underlining nearly every other sentence as I read. The time of the teleconference was drawing closer and I was only a quarter of the way through. I had to formulate my question from what I had read so far. I’ve long held the opinion that much of life comes down to the Serenity Prayer which says, “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference.” Many of the struggles we face are dilemmas of whether the lesson is one of acceptance or courage. Using this concept with which I wrestle constantly, I decided on my question. When the time came I asked Dr. Dyer, “In your book you talk a lot about the power of choice and the importance of choosing our attitudes and thoughts, but you also provide many examples of a mysterious force, or the Di-

vine ‘I Am’ presence, being at work in your life. Can you please speak into the balance between free-will and destiny, and clarify how much control we really have over our lives versus just being pawns on a checkerboard?” Dr. Dyer provided an enlightened answer of course and I went on with my day which consisted of hosting a radio show later that afternoon. A guest was not scheduled for this particular show, I’ll explain why later, so I used the airtime to talk about the teleconference and reveal which question I chose to ask. I talked for close to an hour and then opened the phone lines and invited listeners to call in. Immediately the phone rang. I asked the caller to hold for a moment while I put them on the air. The voice on the other end of the line said, “I don’t really want to go on the air.” I said, “Oh, okay. I’ll let another song play then. Go ahead, how can I help you?” He said his name was Nick and he just happened to be passing through Cincinnati on his way home to Tennessee when he was flipping through the channels, stumbled upon my show, and heard me talking about the Serenity Prayer. He confided that he had been planning his suicide for the past 12 days and had just decided he didn’t want to die. He asked, “What is this station? What am I even listening to? Is this a Christian show?” I told him it didn’t matter, that it was a miracle and he was meant to hear it. I said, “Someone cares about you and that’s all that matters. Consider it divine intervention.” Now for the rest of the story. I almost wasn’t on the teleconference, I almost didn’t ask the question I did, and I almost wasn’t on the radio that day. If it hadn’t been for a last minute change in travel plans, I would have been on an airplane at the exact time as the teleconference and unable to participate. I’ve since finished the book and would have asked a much different question if I had finished it before the teleconference. And the first Tuesday in December is my co-host Judy Peace’s week to host Waves of a New Age, but we had just made the decision to switch weeks so she could cover Christmas Eve for me. Thus the reason why a guest hadn’t been scheduled for this show and I had airtime available to say precisely what Nick needed to hear. I can see clearly now that I was destined to be in that exact space at that exact time asking that exact question. I can see clearly that it was never about me having this special opportunity I found so thrilling or even about me asking my number one burning question. It was about playing a small part in a much larger plan and asking the one question that most needed to be asked in order to have the greatest possible impact, and in order for me to be the channel for grace I pray every day to be in this world. Randy was right. I was given this opportunity for a reason. And my question was connected to my intention for not only this event, but the intention I have for my life. Described as ‟The best thing that᾿s happening in Cincinnati,” Infusion Cincinnati has been heating things up this winter. Popular father and son musical duo, David Kisor and Josh Kisor gave a flawless performance with their inspiring tunes at the December meeting. A dynamic and thought-provoking message was given by Ari Shroyer, who posed the question, ‟What passion or life mission fuels you to get out of bed in the morning?” Ari solved the enigma of the saying, ‟The number one enemy is the pillow,” and delighted the audience with his humor. The wisdom and variety of sharing during the open discussion was out of this world. Many said it was their favorite Infusion yet! Infusion᾿s January meeting features transformation coach Larry Watson. Larry will be sharing information and facilitating discussion about The Power of Visioning: The Magic Starts Now. Music provided by John Redell. Every Infusion meeting includes open discussion. Everyone is encouraged to add their unique voice to the symphony of those committed to making the world a better place by living with passion and purpose. Infusion is open to the public and meets every 2nd Tuesday 6:30-8pm at Rohs Street Cafe, 245 W. McMillan St, 45219 in Clifton. Editor᾿s Note: The ads and articles that appear in WLJ receive a great response. We᾿ve worked hard to earn the trust of our readers, they are loyal and trust the advertisers who support us. This was a post on Facebook by Rita M. Loyd whose article was featured in our NovDec issue. She received three new orders in the first two days our issue was on stands. ‟Thanks to a wonderful regional magazine called Whole Living Journal - Nov/Dec issue (Ohio and Northern Kentucky) for running an article about my unconditional self-love message card deck! I have received a wonder response and its only the second day of November!” “As I’m catching up on my reading today, I’m reading your Sept/Oct Letter from the Editor. What brilliant imagery ‘Give your dream wings’ and ‘Give your dream the royal treatment!’ You are inspiring and motivating to me. I appreciate and honor the gift you are bringing to our community.” Linda Fabe, M.Ed. Received via email

Important

Lab Markers for Optimal

Health

by Dr. Sachin Patel

W

ith the new year comes new aspirations for better health. A good place to start is at the doctor’s office. As you embark on the journey of becoming healthier, it is very important to know your current baseline. An easy way to get a snap shot of your health is by evaluating specific lab markers which provide excellent insight for evaluating overall health. This short article will cover five markers to ask your healthcare provider to include on your next check up.

• Fasting Insulin: Fasting insulin is a very accurate predictor for diabetes. In men, insulin converts testosterone into estrogen (in women it turns estrogen into testosterone), it increases blood pressure, cholesterol, cancer risk, inflammation, joint pain, and accelerates the aging process. Insulin levels are elevated in virtually 100% of people who have type-2 diabetes long before blood sugar issues are detectable in blood work. Fasting insulin is important for predicting diabetes years before it becomes full blown. • Hemoglobin A1C: This marker has to do with how our bodies age at the cellular level. We don’t have rings like a tree. In humans, HbA1C is a way to determine how “fast” you’re aging as well as average blood sugar levels over the last 120 days. Keeping levels low can slow down the aging process. Monitoring HbA1C levels is particularly important for those with a family history of Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s disease. It has been demonstrated that

a HbA1C over 5.6% doubles the rate at which the brain shrinks. Most diabetics are well above 7.0%, even on medication. With diabetics living longer, the concern then shifts to brain health and this is an excellent marker to monitor risk factors. • Vitamin D: Vitamin D is critical for the proper functioning of the immune system and plays an important role in digestive health, brain health, mood and bone health. Most people reading this magazine are deficient because of their geographic location. We simply do not get enough sun in the winter in the Northern United States. Vitamin D levels can be extremely low in those suffering from autoimmune disease or those that have chronic depression. Low vitamin D levels, combined with high stress and poor diet, have also been associated to Leaky Gut Syndrome. • Magnesium: Magnesium plays an important role in over 300 processes in the body. Over 70% of the population is deficient in magnesium. Magnesium is important for hormone production, stress support, carbohydrate metabolism, regularity, bone health, healthy sleep and even acts as a natural muscle relaxer to prevent cramping. Magnesium deficiency is also a big reason why people crave chocolate! Low levels of magnesium are also predictive of a general low mineral status. The best way to test magnesium is by doing an RBC mineral test. A serum magnesium test will only pick up severe deficiencies and can sometimes be misleading. Make sure your doctor orders the right test.

January-February 2014

• High-Sensitivity CRP: Highsensitivity CRP is a blood marker for inflammation. Inflammation is a major stressor on the body and is at the core of virtually all chronic disease. Remember that not all inflammation results in pain (i.e. heart disease). Monitoring HS CRP can determine if there is an inflammatory stress on the body. A chronic slow burning fire eventually leads to bigger complications down the road. Combined with a good history and lifestyle evaluation, your doctor can help you identify potential areas of concern by looking more closely at the above markers combined with several others. This year take a smarter approach to your health and start by getting the right testing done.

3.5 Ways to

ATTRACT the

RIGHT

Relationship

by Relationship Coach Joshua Barfelz

A

ttraction. That intangible spark that pulls two people together and makes them feel alive with desire for each other. It’s the catalyst and the passion that sustains our connection as we develop deeper bonds. Yet attraction can feel like incomprehensible magic, here for one season of our lives, and gone the next. Without it, our love life can feel stagnant and flat, whether we’re looking for that special someone, or have found them and created a life together. Attraction: - is a cornerstone of solid relationships. - is the magnet with which you find love. - provides energy to do the work when our relationships are challenging. - is more – much more – than physical appearance. - is about the kind of person you choose to be every day. - is more than just a one-time event. Without ongoing attraction, our relationships wither and fail, the passion and excitement fades. We settle for something less than what we really truly want deep down inside. We find ourselves looking more and more for someone else to reignite that sweet spark within us. We give up hope that we could ever have the perfect love of which we dream. Many single people lament that they have yet to find the love of their lives. Many couples lament how boring their relationship has become. People who are unhappy with their relationships usually fall into three categories. They either feel powerless about their situation (unable to change it), angry about it (and ready to fight), or just make do with it (life’s ok, but never great). And let’s be honest – who wants to be with someone whose life is, at best, only so-so?

8

Living W h o l e Journal

Building and maintaining your own attractiveness is monumentally important to having quality long-term love, regardless of your current relationship status. Here are 3.5 ways you can develop your own attractiveness.

1. Give more. Not more stuff. More you. People want to connect with you. Open up, share your soft side. Give your time. Share your talents. And give without expectation of return. 2. Seek positive possibilities, no matter what happens to you. Life always presents opportunities for the chance to make different choices if your current ones aren’t getting you what you want. Get healthy, and stay healthy – emotionally, physically, mentally, and spiritually. When you do, you expand into a much more open and abundant way of living, which is incredibly attractive. 3. Pursue your passion. So many people make excuses about why they can’t be happy, and all of them are untrue. Joy and passion are contagious, and the more you focus on finding your own joy the more others will be naturally drawn to you, because it feels good to be around that kind of energy. Stop looking for the love of your life; you’ll find them when you pursue the things which bring you joy. 3.5. Encourage and support others (especially your

spouse) to pursue their dreams too. Connection is built when you empower someone else to follow their dreams. Remember: Romance isn’t about expensive gifts or fancy dinners. It’s about love, passion, connection, attraction. It’s about the choices you make every day. You can make your love life more fulfilling by doing the inner work of becoming more attractive. Freedom to Choose

and Choosing to say ‟Yes!” by Susan Grace My intuition suddenly wrestled my rational mind to the ground, filling the air and speaking in loud tones from my heart. I heard a silent voice, “Weeks ago you chose to create a new world for yourself. A world with a fresh context. Susan, you’re starting anew. You are free to choose the experiences you wish to have.” Even with the imaginative life I had been living, I was bored with my own story. It had been fiIled with spiritual karma and I wanted something more, something less dictated. Something without a monopole pulling me toward it. I kept stretching and reaching to create from in between the molecules of existence to bear fruit from a place I didn’t know. New territory was what I longed for.

Suddenly, my authentic response became a clear and resounding “YES!” Yes, to an invitation from a man whom I did not know, though he was a man who was not a stranger to me - I saw that in his eyes. I was willing to give it a go. I called him, leaving a voicemail, “Mr. Barron, if you are available for an early dinner, I would love to accept your invitation.” A fresh new road lay ahead... Resolution Blueprint 4

by Rev. D. Michelle Wisbith

N

ew Year’s resolutions are what we make when we want to remodel our lives. We tear down an old habit here and add a new one there. Making them last is a lot like remodeling a house. Both are easier to do if you follow a blueprint.

Make sure you’re comfortable with the person in charge. You’re the architect and builder of your life; altering what you do won’t improve anything if the real issue is that you’re not happy with who you are. Before you start, claim and honor your past. Everything unfolds as it does for a reason. Take responsibility for everything you could have done better along with what you did well. Being comfortable with your talents and shortcomings will make for a better working environment. Line up your sub-contractors. Put a team in place; choose people who are interested in the change you’re trying to make and who will lend a hand if you need a nudge. Try to include only those with whom you get along and from whom you’d accept constructive criticism; family feuds and lost friendships are not the goal.

aforementioned items, ask someone who knows you well and whose opinion you value. Oftentimes, others see us more objectively than we see ourselves. Clear the area. Before trying to establish new habits, sell, give away or put into storage any items that might hinder your progress. Are you committed to eating healthier? You won’t need your junk food. Get rid of it. Is this your smoke free year? Your ashtrays will be useless. Do you want to exercise more often? It sounds radical, but cancelling your cable subscription could lead to fewer reasons to spend time on the couch.

Get all of the necessary permits. We like to think that we alone are in charge of our lives, but we forget that we’re a sum of our parts. Make certain your mind, body, emotions and spirit have all given you the go-ahead. Proceeding without their cooperation can lead to trouble down the road.

Assemble your materials. Not having the necessary or helpful items nearby can cause delays that might lead to postponements and, in turn, to a potential project shut-down. If you’ve decided to eat healthier, stock up on the appropriate foods. If you’re going smoke free, check with your doctor to see if having nicotine patches on hand would be beneficial. And if more exercise is your goal, you could use the money you’re no longer spending on the cable bill to buy a jump rope, a gym membership or a nice pair of walking shoes.

Complete your survey. Know the general lay of the land. Recognize your unique strengths, needs and challenges. Putting a plan in place before reviewing why the change is needed, the best way to implement it, and stumbling blocks you might encounter is setting yourself up for a struggle and potential failure. If you have trouble identifying any of the

Find and use outside resources, if needed. There are clubs and organizations filled with people who have successfully made the changes you want to make. Take advantage of this. They can offer words of encouragement, positive examples and additional resources, some of which you’d never discover on your own. Have a house warming party. As you reach your goals, celebrate your successes. Invite others to join you or make it a solo celebration and treat yourself to something new or time doing what you love. About the author: Rev. D. Dr. Wayne Dyer᾿s

New Book I Can See Clearly Now

For many years, Dr. Wayne W. Dyer’s fans have wondered when he would write a memoir. Well, after four decades as a teacher of self-empowerment and the best-selling author of more than 40 books, Wayne has finally done just that! However, he has written it in a way that only he can, and the result is an exciting new twist on an old format. Rather than a plain old memoir, Wayne has gathered together quantum moment recollections. In this revealing and engaging book, Wayne shares dozens of events from his life. In unflinching detail, he relates his vivid impressions of encountering many forks in the road, taking readers with him into these formative experiences. But then he views the events from his current perspective and he notes how he can see clearly now what lessons he ultimately learned. Readers will feel as if they are right there with Wayne, perusing his personal photo album and hearing about his family, how he writes his best-selling books, and so much more. In the process, readers will be inspired to look at their own lives to see how everything they have experienced has led them to where they are right now. Wayne has discovered there are no accidents. Although we may not be aware of whom or what is “moving the checkers,” life has a purpose, and each step of our journey has something to teach us. As he says, “I wasn't aware of all of the future implications that these early experiences were to offer me. Now, from a position of being able to see much more clearly, I know that every single encounter, every challenge, and every situation are all spectacular threads in the tapestry that represents and defines my life, and I am deeply grateful for all of it.” The following is part of a transcript from a teleconference with Wayne about his new book. Moderator: Alright, Tara Robinson from Whole Living Journal. Wayne: Hi Tara! Tara: Hi Dr. Dyer! Wayne: How are you my dear? Where are you calling from? Tara: I am calling from Cincinnati, Ohio. Wayne: Oh! Wow! Nice to be with you! Tara: I love your new book and I have to tell you that it is tied for first place as my favorite Wayne Dyer book with Change Your Thoughts, Change Your Life. Wayne: Oh, I love that book too! Love that book... now I am being called in a whole new direction and it is consuming me… Tara: Well, my question is, in your book you talk a lot about the power of choice and the importance of choosing our attitude and thoughts, but you also provide many examples of a mysterious force or the divine “I Am” presence being at work in your life. I wanted to ask you to please speak into the balance between free will and destiny and clarify how much control we really have over our lives versus just being pawns on a checkerboard.

Wayne: Yeah, it is both...Our bodies are the bodies that we get...but we also have choices to make. So, we don᾿t necessarily choose...I didn᾿t choose to be 6 foot 1 and to have my hair fall out on top...There are also choices to make. In my body today, I watch what kind of food that I put into it, you know, and I exercise by swimming or walking or running or doing yoga or whatever. I have endless choices to make within a context of already having it already taken care of. I think the same thing is true on the non-physical domain ...that we have a dharma...a big part of our life is laid out for us. We think that we are making choices all of the time. As we look back and see more clearly now on all of these factors that were taking place in my life like you know living 10 years in an orphanage I think had a huge amount about learning to be self-reliant when I was just a child...there was something moving the pieces around that said that if you are going to teach... you are going to learn self-reliance by being in a place where there is no one to rely upon. That is basically what I Can See Clearly Now is. It is a look at all of those factors that were taking place that....yes, we were having a free will, yes we were making choices, but within a context of all of our choices being made for us. Yes, indeed, we are doomed to make choices and you know, we can see it in our physical body, we can begin to see it in our non-physical body, and now, you start to look at what is going on today. Who are you talking to and what kinds of things are happening in my life and can I step outside and become the observer to it and notice it and sort of go with that flow.

A NEW Way Toward Enlightenment by Jennifer Annenberg

I

recently moved from a home in which I had lived for thirteen years. It was one of the most humbling, life changing, stressful, enlightening transitions I have ever undergone. I had accumulated quite a bit in that time and had sold my home in only three days which caused a bit of undesired panic. Yes, the universe had responded with a resounding affirmation and provided me with what I wanted, but what was I to do with all my things? I gave away vast amounts, sorted thru what remained and kept only what I truly loved. In the end what went into boxes was the “final cut,” the reminders of why I am here, those things that bring me joy. I felt great freedom and liberation from no longer being weighed down by unnecessary expressions that didn’t match where I am right now. The past washed away enabling me to enjoy the moment. But the honeymoon phase was short lived. What followed was a dark period. I looked down at my torn pants and work shoes. Other than my purse, I didn't know where anything was. All of the little fragments of me were in boxes scattered about my new place. My whole demeanor changed. Everything was grey. I literally became a blank canvas. As I unpacked, I found my coffee machine, a favorite rock, some feathers, and a box of high heeled shoes. I rejoiced in a perfectly brewed cup of coffee, delighting in the aroma and the warmth of the cup. I found my beautiful dishes and had the most elegant Ritz cracker moment that a queen would envy. I tasted every morsel of butter that I had never noticed before. Only the most gorgeous luxurious clothing had made the final cut, so every piece paid homage to superior taste and craftsmanship, at least in my mind. I felt I was unpacking art.

In the World, but Not of the World Even though I thought I had discovered I was unattached to the material things of the world, what I actually found was a new purpose in them. They became a conduit to reconnect to my senses which allowed me to be fully present in the moment. I was able to powerfully open to the awareness of who I am. When I experience the beauty of something, it doesn't mean I have to own it, I can use my senses to ground in the moment and gain a heightened perception of the now. This helps me to become more fully alert to who I am and what I᾿m doing. I then live life in a completely different way, tapped in, tuned in and turned on. Experiencing heaven on earth. My mind, my physical body and my heart are fully engaged. I was inspired to choose some clothing to wear and venture out that day. It would be the first time in days so I got dressed with great reverence and care. Intuitively understanding that these pieces were pulling me into a deep appreciation of the

14

Living W h o l e Journal

moment thru my senses, with each earring or a shoe I selected, I was in gratitude, appreciative of my ears’ ability to listen and the incredible job my legs had done for me lately during the move. I was changed for the day, both literally and figuratively, enjoying the pleasure of the experience and feeling as though there was nothing but this moment, the sense of time slipping away. I knew everything I touched and everyone whom I encountered that day would benefit from my ability to return home to myself. To that blissful, centered, connected place. There are many ways to peace, happiness and enlightenment. Some people believe the only way to achieve these states of being are by casting off material possessions and denouncing the physical world. But I’ve found that the physical world can be a portal towards the happiness, peace and contentment so desired. We are all surrounded by a physical world. Whether we like to acknowledge it or not, it is part of our experience here on earth. Why not create heaven while we᾿re here? Choose carefully, edit regularly, only surround yourself with those things (i.e. your music collection, art, food, clothing, people) that trigger the highest vibrational awareness in you. These things may be meaningless to anyone else yet, to you they convey nuisances that have the potential to transport you to that sought after place of peace, bliss and contentment. Your environment has the potential to lift you up, out through the portal of your senses, and into the place you long to return; Home. We cannot obtain peace, happiness or enlightenment from the world, yet we generate these to the world when we get back in touch with who we are. Are you Ready? “I will remind you of your magnificence, until you are utterly, completely, unapologetically, able to see it in Yourself.” xoxo Jennifer About the author: Jennifer Annenberg is Creative Director for Jennifer Annenberg Productions. Every Woman Queen of Her Own Heart is the

by Shiloh Sophia Every woman is the Queen of her own heart. It isn’t something she does, it is who she is. She must decide how to govern her own domain. She seeks friends and allies that honor who she is and who she is becoming. She has the power to create miracles. She does not know how or when her needs will be met, but she trusts the will of the Divine. Being the Queen of one᾿s domain is not about being the ruler over anyone. And it isn᾿t even about calling herself a Queen. It is about self honor. It is about choice. It is about knowing her limits and setting her boundaries. It is about learning how to live with what comes her way, with as much grace, majesty and justice as she can.

And sometimes, yes, she has to have her own way! She knows she has a calling to greatness within her. She leads her own life as a grand experiment in happiness, in creativity, and in abundance. She offers her gifts to others, but not to her own detriment. She rests as she needs to, ruling one᾿s own life takes energy. She chooses to embody wholeness, her sovereign essence, even when she feels fragmented by all there is to do, and be. She holds the prayers of the world within her because she cares what happens with all beings even though she cannot reach them all. She reaches whom she can. She often feels like she is not pulling it all off,

January-February 2014

and sometimes she isn᾿t. But she keeps reaching anyway. She keeps opening her heart and being in her own power. She governs her life in gratitude. She is the Queen of Her Own Heart and she knows that, and that is a very good thing.

Mushrooms: More to them than you may realize

W

e used to think mushrooms were akin to iceberg lettuce in nutritional content. You know, mostly water and not much else. But their high water content is only part of the story. And in fact, high water content also means low energy density, not a bad thing when it comes to making us feel full quickly—before we consume too many calories, that is. Mushrooms also have as many disease-fighting antioxi-

dants as red bell peppers, according to one well designed study. They’re the only vegetable or fruit source of the essential nutrient, Vitamin D; other natural sources include fish and beef, plus of course many foods are fortified with D. These are among the reasons for adding a variety of types of mushrooms to your diet. Try this zingy recipe for stuffed mushrooms – the combo of mustard and horseradish in the stuffing is quite delicious.

Stuffed Mushrooms with Corn and Dijon-Horseradish (Serves 6-8) Ingredients: 2 lbs baby bellas (about 24), stems removed and reserved

1 bunch parsley, stems removed

1 12-oz bag frozen corn, thawed

2 T Dijon mustard

1 red bell pepper

1 c Greek yogurt 1 T ground horseradish Dash of pepper for garnish

Instructions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Layer corn kernels on a rimmed baking sheet and bake for 10 mins. Meanwhile, grind mushroom stems in a food processor. Transfer to a medium bowl and microwave for 3 mins. Add roasted corn to cooked mushroom stems and set aside. In a small bowl, combine olive oil and garlic. Arrange mushroom caps, stem side up, on the cooking sheet. Brush each cap with a small amount of oil/garlic mixture. Bake for 10–15 mins, or until they just begin to soften. Meanwhile, remove stem and seeds

from the red pepper, and place pepper pieces and parsley in the food processor. Pulse about 10 times, or until vegetables are coarsely chopped. Combine chopped vegetables with the corn mixture, Greek yogurt, mustard and horseradish. Divide stuffing mixture between mushrooms evenly, reserving any leftover mixture for later use. Sprinkle mushrooms with pepper for garnish, if desired. Bake 10 more mins, or until thoroughly heated. Serve hot, or refrigerate and serve chilled.

Exercising Daily Offsets the Unhealthy Traps of Winter Every year at this time, many of us try to lose a few holidays pounds. But winter is also when there’s little daylight, icy sidewalks and an almost irresistible urge to eat hearty “comfort food.” However, an interesting, well designed study reported recently in the New York Times suggests a workable strategy to counterbalance all that: exercise every day. Researchers at the University of Bath (England) divided 26 healthy young men into two experimental groups. Both groups were instructed to overeat by 5075% over their usual caloric intake and to cut back on their usual activity levels. However, one group ran at a moderate pace on a treadmill every day and the other group did not exercise at all. According to the Times, “the results were striking.” One researcher reported that exercise “seemed to completely cancel out many of the changes induced by overfeeding and reduced activity.” The takeaway? Find 3045 minutes every day, without fail, to exercise, even if it’s walking up and down flights of stairs in your house or place of business. We All

Have a Story to Tell

by Gloria Charlier, RN, BSN, CH

Discovering the Best Kept Secret in Cincinnati

W

e all have a story to tell. Something happens in our lives, or to our families᾿, that sends us down a certain path. My journey began in the Pittsburgh area at the age of five when we discovered I had a pretty severe case of asthma. This was at a time before “asthma” became a household term so I was not diagnosed until I was put through a series of trial and error procedures, one of which was a tonsillectomy with an adenoidectomy. I was a frail child who missed eighty days of school in the first grade and had a chronic cough that my paternal grandfather described as sounding like his hunting dogs barking. My grandfather had been a coal miner all of his life and also had asthma so we developed a ritual where he would pick me up on Friday night, we would go to the doctor’s office for our allergy shots together and I would stay with grandma and grandpa for the night.

Grandma᾿s Stories Are the Best I loved the time I spent with grandma as she was a great storyteller. Her father had been the town doctor in the small town just south of Pittsburgh where she lived. I heard many stories about her making rounds and helping her father see patients during a time when they made house calls. She talked about healing with herbs and poultices. She introduced me to the mysteries of life with a spiritual perspective; having prophetic dreams, planting the garden at certain times of the moon and so much more. These stories followed me throughout my entire life. When I became a registered nurse I always had these stories of healing in the back of my mind.

One Thing Leads to Another This led me on a quest to gain wisdom and understanding about the mysteries of life. When I moved to Cincinnati in 1991 I discovered a group of kindred spirits, other nurses who were interested in holistic healing (as it is now known). After I took my first class on Therapeutic Touch I knew this was a path I had to follow. I traveled across the country from Cape Cod to San Francisco, to Chicago through Asheville North Carolina, Alabama & Florida to meet and study under some of the most well respected visionary pioneers of our time.

Living W h o l e Journal

When I took a course on herbal remedies I discovered the best kept secret in Cincinnati. The Lloyd Library at the corner of Court & Plum is the largest herbal library in the U.S.A. and the third largest in the world! I met Jeanne Rose (the Grand Dame of herbalism) when she donated her personal herbal library to the Lloyd. She decided to focus on Aromatherapy and the use of essential oils for healing. That is when I signed up for her challenging and wonderful course on all things aromatic and became a Certified Aromatherapy Practitioner.

Enter Caroline Myss, Dr. Ray Moody and More From there I learned about Caroline Myss, read her books Anatomy of the Spirit and Sacred Contracts. I spent two years traveling to Chicago to take her course based on Sacred Contracts and became certified as an Archetype consultant. This then led me to Wisdom University where I met and learned from so many more fascinating people. One of my favorites is Dr. Raymond Moody M.D. His research on Near Death Experiences has changed the way we view death in our culture opening up a whole new perspective from a scientific point of view. I have met many more interesting teachers along the way, taking courses and always reading. I love delving into deep and rich topics such as these. Throughout all of this I have come to understand that our lives are so much more than our three dimensional world and what our five senses reveal. My life is so much richer and more full of meaning because of all that I have experienced and learned along the way. I᾿m grateful for those early experiences that put my feet on this path, and gave me a fabulous story to tell. What᾿s your story?

The Invitation by Oriah ©Mountain Dreaming from the book The Invitation It doesn’t interest me what you do for a living. I want to know what you ache for and if you dare to dream of meeting your heart’s longing. It doesn’t interest me how old you are. I want to know if you will risk looking like a fool for love, for your dream for the adventure of being alive. It doesn’t interest me what planets are squaring your moon... I want to know if you have touched the centre of your own sorrow if you have been opened by life’s betrayals or have become shrivelled and closed from fear of further pain. I want to know if you can sit with pain mine or your own, without moving to hide it, or fade it or fix it. I want to know if you can be with joy mine or your own if you can dance with wildness and let the ecstasy fill you to the tips of your fingers and toes without cautioning us to be careful, to be realistic to remember the limitations of being human. It doesn’t interest me if the story you are telling me is true. I want to know if you can disappoint another to be true to yourself. If you can bear the accusation of betrayal and not betray your own soul. If you can be faithless and therefore trustworthy. I want to know if you can see Beauty even when it is not pretty, every day.

And if you can source your own life from its presence. I want to know if you can live with failure yours and mine and still stand at the edge of the lake and shout to the silver of the full moon, “Yes.” It doesn’t interest me to know where you live or how much money you have. I want to know if you can get up after the night of grief and despair weary and bruised to the bone and do what needs to be done to feed the children. It doesn’t interest me who you know or how you came to be here. I want to know if you will stand in the centre of the fire with me and not shrink back. It doesn’t interest me where or what or with whom you have studied. I want to know what sustains you from the inside when all else falls away. I want to know if you can be alone with yourself and if you truly like the company you keep in the empty moments.

Coffee, or Tea? Herbs ‘n Such, by Mimi Tagher

A

s you sit by the fireplace this winter…or are at work, shopping, or with friends for a social gathering…what is your preferred drink to keep you warm and toasty from the inside out? Most Americans are still choosing coffee over tea (54% drink coffee daily), but either one, when consumed in moderation and prepared in the right way, can be used effectively as part of your overall health and fitness plan. However, drinking either of these beverages doused with creamer, milk, sugar and other sweeteners and flavorings, overrides the therapeutic benefits and causes more harm than good to your health.

Coffee - Studies Show Health Benefits Historically coffee has gotten a bad rap from health experts, but more recent studies show that coffee - organic whole-bean black coffee - may provide some health benefits. Research suggests coffee can lower the risk for type 2 diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, dementia, stroke, and cancers of the liver, kidney and prostate. Coffee lowers blood glucose level and may even help increase the beneficial bacteria in the gut. It is a good source of antioxidants, and may be beneficial for the brain and muscle tissue. However, most people are not drinking coffee for its health benefits, but rather for the boost they receive. Even this can be good. The caffeine in coffee changes the brain’s chemistry. It “perks us up” by blocking the action of adenosine that is associated with sleep. It also activates the brains pleasure center and triggers the sympathetic nervous system to release adrenaline into our system making us more alert and responsive.

3 Tips for Getting the Most from Your Cup

To get the most therapeutic benefits from your cup of java it is important to use only high quality whole bean organic coffee. Most coffee products are heavily contaminated with pesticides. Coffee is one of the most heavily sprayed crops grown. Second, grind it yourself. Most pre-ground coffees are rancid - if it doesn’t smell and taste fresh, it probably isn’t. Third, and probably most important, drink your coffee black so it doesn’t spike your insulin levels and turn your favorite past time into a health hazard. Dark roast has less caffeine and more antioxidants than does a lighter roast.

20

Living W h o l e Journal

The problems associated with coffee are usually attributed to the effects of caffeine. Although fresh, organic, whole bean coffee is not as harmful as synthetic caffeine, it can still negatively affect your adrenal glands or cause electrolyte imbalances. It is a stimulant and can be addictive. Dr. Mercola, renowned author and health expert, recommends one cup per day.

Tea - 2 Great Choices, Tulsi and Matcha Tea can be a healthy alternative to coffee. Tulsi tea is my number one recommendation. Tulsi tea is derived from the herb Holy Basil which has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries because of its health promoting properties. Holy Basil is an adaptogenic herb which means it improves the body’s ability to cope with stress. Tulsi is an excellent source of antioxidants and phytochemicals, which help support the immune system, promote healthy metabolism, and provide bone and joint support. It is also beneficial to the respiratory system, and digestive system, and can help maintain and stabilize blood sugar levels. Another great choice is Matcha green tea. Matcha, a powdered green tea, comes from the same plant as black teas, but remains unfermented. It is then ground into a fine green powder so that benefits are received from the entire tea leaf. The best Matcha green tea comes from Japan and is steamed, not roasted or pan fried. As a result, this tea retains all the nutrient rich value possible from the tea leaf and does not have a bitter taste. Matcha green tea is rich in EGCG (epigallocatechin-3-gallate), an antioxidant compound which helps fight cancer cells, protect the brain and liver from oxidation, improve digestion, lower cholesterol and blood pressure levels, and protect against Alzheimer’s disease. Whether you are drinking tea for its taste or its health benefits go ahead and drink up - just make sure the tea is a high quality organic tea that is grown, harvested and prepared with the utmost care. Choose Love Over Being ‟Right”

by Patrick Murphy Welage

he word vegan does not serve me well. It is a loaded word, often used with an emotional punch and judgment. I prefer simply “a healthy diet,” rather than “vegan or plant-based” diet. Sometimes I joke and say that I am 99.999% vegan. Why? Because “vegan” is a label that often divides people rather than unites them.

T

for me to explain why I would never buy one today. Inwardly, I say “Thank you” to the animal(s) that gave its life for me to have this. Then I ask forgiveness from that animal. And when someone says, “I cannot believe that you, of all people, are wearing a leather jacket,” I simply reply, “Yes, I know. May I tell you why I am wearing it?” It is all about my attitude.

First, Do No Harm

About the author: Patrick Murphy Welage is a Certified Laughter Yoga Teacher. He is internationally celebrated and has been identified as one of the senior figures in the international Laughter Yoga movement. Every day I practice Ahimsa; a non-violent, non-judgmental way of living. Okay, some days more than others. The Dalai Lama once said, “Even if you can do no good in the world, at least do no harm.” I work every day on meeting people where they are on their journeys, rather than where I would like them to be. I have learned to upgrade my demands to preferences. Every person values recognition. Over the years, I have worked with and for the homeless community. Every one of them with whom I have spoken has essentially said the same thing,“The worst part of being homeless is that other people refuse to even acknowledge me.” Most cities have wonderful social service agencies that offer food, clothing and shelter to those in need, but what homeless people really need is human recognition. A smile. A kind word, like “Hello” or “How’s it going today?” A conversation that may include “How long have you been on the streets?” or “Where do you sleep at night?” or “Where are you from?” If I really want to engage in a good conversation, I ask them about religion or politics! And then just listen.

Please Just Eat the Cheese Already Here is another example: My 95-year-old mother lives independently. She is amazing. Sometimes, she actually invites me over for dinner. Yes, she prepares the food, sets the table, and serves it to me. She knows that I prefer a plant-based diet. But if, by chance, she happens to put a little grated cheese on the salad, that is a no-brainer for me. Of course, I say “thank you” and enjoy the salad. It is that simple. The truth is that the stress I could create by not eating a small amount of cheese is worse than the cheese itself. And I never want to refuse a gift that someone has lovingly prepared for me (especially my mother). Why would I? Just so I can be “right”? I think not. And, what about those old, useful, and beautiful leather goods and fur coats? I have a beautiful, Italian leather jacket. When I wear it I use the opportunity to share with people my thoughts on animal products. Someone usually says “That’s a beautiful jacket,” I say “Thank you. I bought it eight years ago, and I would never buy one now.” Now, the door is open

Book Reviews Assertiveness for Earth Angels: How to Be Loving Instead of ‟Too Nice” by Doreen Virtue (Hay House, 2013) Author and speaker Doreen Virtue is extremely passionate about the topic of her latest book - which took her many years to write for that very reason. In Assertiveness for Earth Angels Doreen teaches Earth Angels - extremely sweet people who care more about others᾿ happiness than their own - how to maintain their inner peace and loving nature while at the same time holding boundaries. She says, “I discovered that there’s a vast difference between being ‘nice’ and being ‘loving.’ I had lived my life as a ‘nice girl,’ covering up my feelings to protect others, and sugarcoating what I said to avoid conflict. I thought I was being nice. I wasn’t. I was being fearful, which is the opposite of love.” This book helps readers learn the art of speaking up in relationships and in their activism about issues related to the world. Doreen has appeared on Oprah, The View, Good Morning America, CNN, and other programs; presents workshops around the world; and also has a weekly call-in talk show on www.HayHouseRadio.com ®

A Year of Miracles: Daily Devotions and Reflections by Marianne Williamson (HarperOne, 2013) #1 New York Times bestselling author Marianne Williamson is perhaps best known as the wise and inspirational teacher who has inspired millions around the world with a simple yet profound lesson that informs all of her work: to change one’s thoughts is to change one’s reality. In her new book A Year of Miracles: Daily Devotions and Reflections she offers spiritual readings, including prayers, meditations, declarations, and affirmations--one for each day of the year--that offer guidance, support, and enlightenment to help shift one’s mindset away from our greatest fears and toward all that is possible, and in doing so, open ourselves to the limitless miracles that await us. Williamson provides a range of insights and wisdom, including: • The universe is conspiring in every moment to bring me happiness and peace. • The endless creativity of the present delivers me from the limits of yesterday. • Let me be guided by the wisdom of my heart. • I embrace each moment as an opportunity for a miracle.

Working with ALL

Your Senses

Intuitive Insights, by Francine Haydon and Patricia Garry

E

very person is equipped with intuition, as is every animal, but many choose to go through life without consciously accessing or acknowledging their own psychic abilities. That is such a shame! If you knew you had the right tools to help you do a task, wouldn’t you want to use them? Some people choose not to recognize their gifts. Others are afraid of their gifts. Some fear the accuracy; that they might see, hear, feel or know something that they don’t want to know about. Or some might fear that it is evil or unnatural to access one’s intuition. Nothing could be further from the truth. Each of us is born with at least eleven senses to help us deal with situations on a day to day basis, as well as handle major life issues. However, many people go through life mainly using their five physical senses – seeing, hearing, feeling, tasting and smelling – but neglecting, or at the least under using, their other intuitive senses. Why not use every tool in the tool box? Your psychic senses help give you guidance, support, clarity and confirmation. The primary psychic senses are known as clairvoyance (clear seeing or vision), clairaudience (clear hearing), clairsentience (clear feeling), claircognizance (intuition or knowing), clairgustance (clear tasting) and clairalience (clear smelling). You probably have been using these daily or more often than you’ve been aware, but have never stopped to think about it or give it a name. Have you ever awakened in the night knowing that your child was sick or hurt? That’s a common example of intuition. Or perhaps you had an exceptionally vivid dream that “happened” to come true. That was no coincidence. Your clairvoyance was at work painting a picture of what to expect. Many people will find these senses coming into play when a loved one has passed on and left this planet. If your mother loved fresh roses, with their unmistakable odor, you may well experience that aroma when Mom wants to be in touch – an example of clairalience, clear smelling. Tell her “Thank You”

with a smile, and that you’re holding her in your thoughts. Holidays are a good time for clairgustance – perhaps as you are readying a festive meal, you will suddenly have in your mouth and in your nose a taste from your childhood. Or such a taste may indicate a food or flavor that your body needs right now to bring it back into a healthy balance. Clairaudience experiences sometimes come as a warning – you may hear a bell or a clang that brings your attention back to the now, just in time to avert an accident. Clairsentience is what may be happening when you walk into a room and feel a strong chill – or perhaps even freeze up momentarily. You are likely ‘reading’ the energy of a negative or angry person. Or sensing a friend who has crossed over, and is hanging out among people s/he knew and liked – though that probably won’t feel as cold. It’s a good idea to say thank you whenever you receive intuitive information. With acknowledgment and gratitude, you will likely get more and clearer information next time. As with most things, practice will make perfect – and you’ll be using all your abilities to live your best life! Be sure to check back on this column throughout the year as we᾿ll be diving deeper into each sense in the coming issues. Laughter Yoga is to be featured in a new national publication. Live Happy, a new magazine dedicated to promoting and sharing authentic happiness, sent a reporter and photographer to interview Judi Winall and take photographs of the Joyful Healing Laughter Yoga Club in November 2013. Dr. Madan Kataria, the founder of Laughter Yoga International was also interviewed for this article which will appear in the January 2014 issue and can be found

Dr. John Hutton and Sandra Gross, owners of the beloved Blue Manatee Children’s Bookstore & Decafé as well as Brazee Street Studios, both in Oakley, have embarked on a new undertaking. Sleepy Bee Café, located at 3098 Madison Road, is dedicated to serving locally sourced meals with a healthy, creative edge. “The recent, dramatic decline of honeybee populations inspired us to get involved, and a restaurant was a natural means to do so,” explains co-owner Dr. John Hutton. “Without bees and the ecosystems they depend on, our food supply would suffer greatly.” Executive Chef Frances Kroner re-imagines breakfast and lunch by striking a balance between satisfying comfort foods and healthy options with bright flavors. Ingredients will be gathered from regional farms, including produce, meats, and dairy products that are organic and hormone-free when available. “We are committed to serving local, pesticide-free, non-geneticallymodified foods whenever possible. Our menu will be dynamic and evolve with the seasons,” she says. Sleepy Bee Café is open Mon–Fri, 7am–2:30pm, Sat and Sun, 8am–3pm. Wishing YOU a Year of Miracles from All of Us at WLJ ‟How often do I not notice the miracles all around me, or honor all the kindnesses shown me, or allow myself to fully embrace the good that’s in my life? Today I remember that every day is precious, every heart carries within it the spirit of God, and every event contains the platform for a miracle. May I not be blind today to the awesomeness of life.” ~ Marianne Williamson, A Year of Miracles: Daily Devotions and Reflections

BREATHE MORE LIFE INTO YOUR BODY noring and sleep apnea lead to low oxygen levels in the body. In turn, this leads to physical problems people don’t usually associate with sleep issues. They affect your life at home, on the job, and your relationships. Dr. Bosma helps patients who snore through a unique system of evaluation and treatment called Oral Systemic Balance. Breathe more life into your body! Call us for information or to schedule your sleep evaluation.
