A New Love Story

A

few months ago we started including a column in each issue where we highlight some of our favorite Facebook posts. This has been an especially fun part of the magazine to publish because most everyone seems to have an affinity for their circles on social media. Social media has really changed our world because we are able to share and spread ideas more quickly than ever before. This allows for a full witnessing of collective consciousness in action. Collective consciousness is a real thing. I learned from my editor at Hay House recently that one of the last stages my book will go through before it is published is a final check to see if anything has recently been published with similar ideas and wording to avoid copyright infringement. Apparently this happens quite frequently. An author has a stroke of brilliance and decides to write a book with his or her original thoughts. There’s no need to quote anyone, because it is “new information” as far as the author is concerned. But lo and behold, collective consciousness has infiltrated many other minds with the same ideas and a slew of books are all published at roughly the same time, all containing very similar “new information.” I found this truth intriguing, and yet, I easily believed it. In fact, right after I sent the first draft of my manuscript to Hay House, I was surprised when Dr. Barbara DeAngelis’ book, Soul Shifts, showed up in our mailbox for review. Before my editor had even responded to my submission, and long before my book would actually be published, I held in my hand a similar message written with very similar language. The similarity was so striking in fact that a concerning thought immediately flew through my mind. “What if she thinks I copied her idea?” This seemed absurd since I had turned my book in before I even knew hers existed, much less had read any of it. It was impossible my writing had been influenced by her book. And yet, something had been influencing both of us in almost identical ways. It was definitely a case of collective consciousness in action. Anytime we have a direct experience of an idea, that idea becomes a part of our intrinsic knowing. My direct experience with collective consciousness has helped me appreciate its power. Many of us might feel like renegades, ready to take on the world. Yet, simultaneously we feel quite small on this great big planet and we begin to question how we are ever going to impact the change about which we feel so passionate. Well, the good news is that we never have to do it alone. Collective consciousness has our back. We can rest assured that our passion is also the passion of others who feel likewise called to “do” something about it. Even if it’s only speaking passionately about the idea…or writing about it in social media post. As I’ve observed the activity on Facebook recently, I’ve noticed a collective consciousness trend. Suddenly it’s all about

love. Of course love is not a new novel idea. However, the conversation about it is changing. It’s suddenly deeper. More introspective. There’s a passionate search happening for sacred union. No longer are people satisfied with staying in unhappy relationships, however, they are also suddenly not as okay with leaving quite so quickly. There’s a new resolve to unmask what the relationship is trying to tell us abut ourselves. There’s a new commitment to work the idea that our partners are reflections of us. Therefore, if we believe there is a problem with the relationship, the first place we must go is within. Essentially we can ask ourselves, “What’s wrong with me that I’m in this relationship?” This is a slippery slope because most of us tend to be pretty hard on ourselves already. To take every complaint we have about others and turn it inward is likely to cause our innerjudge to become even more harsh. Observing this new trend regarding love, and seeing the potential for even greater separation from love within, I was inspired to join the bandwagon of collective consciousness and write a post sharing my own unique/not-at-all-unique thoughts on the subject. I’m sharing it with you now in the spirit of “we’re all in this together.” Godspeed to you on your journey, dear seeker and lover of life. May you experience a new love story. Many of us strive to be Perfect. Especially spiritual evolutionaries. We’re always checking and double checking to see if we’re doing things “right” in order to evolve our consciousness. Always trying to make sure we don’t fall asleep and miss anything. Pushing our limits. Trying to be better. Trying to grow our souls. Be more mindful. Be more intuitive. Succumb less often to our egos. Find the perfect relationship. Be more filled with light. Perfectionism is a “dis-ease.” The pursuit of perfectionism leads to un-ease. It causes unrest and deep disturbance. The secret is that Love is the answer. And the Truth is...Creation is messy. Creation is not perfect. Love enjoys and celebrates the messiness of creation. Love honors our own inner messiness which is often a HOT mess - and the messiness of others. Love loves because it loves. Period. Love does not seek perfect. Love is bigger than perfect. Love is better than perfect. Love is wiser than perfect. You are worthy of being loved even though you are not perfect. You are worthy of fulfilling intimate relationships even though you are not perfect. Don’t worry, you are not going to “ruin” or “hurt” anyone just because you’re not perfect. Get in there. Open yourself to love. Don’t wait until you have mastered everything you think you need to master. Don’t wait until you’ve seen and healed all your wounds. Be fearless in loving yourself and others. And if you are afraid...that’s still not an excuse to withhold love from yourself or another. Love already! Be loved already! You are magnificent as you are...perfectly imperfect.

GuruGanesha Cincinnati coming to

by Susana Niedermann

I

t was summer of 2014 when I received an email that would change my life forever. It read: Seva Retreats, Yoga and Service, Building a home for the children of Ramana’s Garden, Rishikesh, India, November 9-16, 2014. Organized by the Sat Nam Foundation, powered by Spirit Voyage. A video accompanied this email. Satisfying my curiosity, I opened it and watched the story of Ramana’s Garden unfold before my eyes. As I immersed myself in it, I could not help but to be overcome with deep emotion. Tears rolled down my cheeks. It was so touching, so true, so powerful. For a week, I could not stop thinking about this email. I watched this video over and over, embracing each time that same emotion, compassion and love. In my limited mind, I would think to myself, “This is great. I would love to be part of this Seva retreat, but who goes to India? It’s not like it’s around the corner, right? It’s on the other side of the world!” Who goes to India? Well, I do. Within days, I booked a ticket and I was on my way to experience the most powerful transformation imaginable. Rishikesh lies in the foothills of the Himalayas where the banks of the Ganga River teem with life, where monkeys and sacred cows roam the streets next to holy men in ashes and women in brightly colored saris, where even the Beatles found spirituality and purpose. It is also the residence of Ramana’s Garden, a home to over 60 at risk children—many of whom have lost one or both parents. This home provides food, shelter, necessities and education to abandoned, destitute, and abused children so they may thrive in a world that once seemed hopeless. Above all, the children are given lots of love and nurturing in an environment that is both welcoming and tolerant. Ramana’s Garden was founded by a determined and dedicated American woman, Dr. Prabhavati Dwabha. As a result of her spiritual practice on the banks of the River Ganga, her heart overflowed with compassion for the numerous needy children she encountered, and she decided to make those children her life’s work. For years, on a shoestring budget, she has provided for them and empowered them to thrive and be independent in a world that would otherwise be unimaginable. My encounter at Ramana’s was exactly what I envisioned it to be. Meeting these children for the first time was a power-

ful experience. They were expecting us and they were ready to show their enthusiasm with us through song. So lively, so heartwarming, and yet, so incredibly overwhelming. At that time, a revelation came to me, and then I knew, for the first time in my life, that I have found my soul purpose: to help children in need around the world. And I knew it would all start right here at Ramana’s Garden. After my return home, I could not stop thinking of ways to help these children. It just so happened that through my love of yoga, my friend Vivian and I attended a workshop in Chicago with GuruGanesha. GuruGanesha is the founder of Spirit Voyage, and also an amazing entrepreneur and an exquisite musician. A vision came to me while we chanted to the sounds of his guitar—I needed to find a way to bring him to Cincinnati. I asked him if he would be willing to come to perform a concert for the benefit of Ramana’s Garden. His response: “Name the time and place and I’ll be there.” For the first time in Cincinnati, GuruGanesha Band will perform live in Concert for the benefit of Ramana’s Garden. A time for prayer, meditation, chanting, dancing, rejoicing and celebration in the Fath Auditorium at the Cincinnati Arts Muserum on September 24th at 7pm. And so it is. A vision come true with my heart overflowing with gratitude to continue to provide hope for my children at Ramana’s Garden. Tickets can be purchased at: https://tickets.brightstarevents.com/event/guruganeshaband-cincinnati If you would like to make a donation to Ramana's Garden, please visit: https://www.sayyesnow.org/ About the author: Susana Niedermann is a certified Kundalini Yoga Teacher. Marianne Williamson

New Book Tears to Triumph “The crisis of modern society is that human beings too often feel spiritually homeless without it,” says Marianne Williamson in her new book, Tears to Triumph: The Spiritual Journey from Suffering to Enlightenment. “Our personal suffering is often a sacred initiation into a deeper experience of who we are as people, and why we’re on the earth. I’ve sought to view the origins of deep sadness through a spiritual lens, in order to illuminate the path that leads beyond.” The internationally recognized teacher, speaker, and New York Times bestselling author argues that our desire to avoid pain is actually detrimental to our lives, disconnecting us from our deepest emotions and preventing true healing and spiritual transcendence. Instead of allowing ourselves to embrace our hurt, we numb it, medicate it, dismiss it, or otherwise divert our attention so that we never have to face it. In refusing to acknowledge our suffering, we actually prolong it and deny ourselves the opportunity for profound wisdom—ultimately limiting our personal growth and opportunity for enlightenment. Frozen by denial, we are left standing in the breech. Whole industries profit from this immobility, and while they have grown rich, we have become spiritually poorer. Please visit www.Marianne.com for more information.

You will never enjoy the fruits of good health by focusing on avoiding disease. You must turn your attention fully toward the incredible joy of health to actually experience it. - Jack E. Armstrong, D.C.

Who Are You at Your

Core? by Larry Watson

W

hat is your core? Who are you at your core? The vitality and beauty you create and exude are the result of your core, just like the Earth. The Earth is a unique planet because of its core. It is this molten magma center that is the source of diversity and vibrant life. Not only because it is a source of warmth or heat. It is because of the electromagnetic field that reaches beyond the physical limits of the core. This electromagnetic field creates a protective barrier out in space that prevents most of the sun’s harmful rays from reaching the surface of our planet. Because of this nurturing field, life on Earth is abundant. Your core, the essence of who you are that lies beneath the surface of your physical experience is the reason you have the diversity of your experience. It creates a safe space for the ceaseless, restless, creative force to perform its magic. The surface of this planet is incredibly thin compared to the thickness of the Earth’s core. A mere five to twentyfive miles of soil, ocean, rock, and hardened lava separate us from the magma beneath, while the molten core of the Earth is thousands of miles deep. Just like the human illusion of immensity we have when we look at the mountains and oceans of our planet, our daily experiences can seem like mountains and hurricanes tossing us about.

Just like Earth, we have a core that is undisturbed by these surface tempests. Just like Earth, our essence is a dominating force that continues to spawn life and beauty on the surface of our human experience. Our core is not dependent on the temporary life-spans of the surface existence. It is virtually timeless and constant. Take comfort in the temporary nature of your human, surface life. Revel in your beauty that your essence harbors, and in the diversity of lifeexpanding permutations in you – and in your fellow planetoids. All the while knowing your essence is the life-force of every experience.

Walking As a

Wise Woman by Anyaa T. McAndrew, MA, LPC, NCC “Use me up; let me give everything I am, pour out my heart and soul according to your plan. Use me up, let there be nothing of me left, no chance to love untaken, not one regret.” ~ Karen Taylor-Good, Use Me Up

A

s we move into the second half or even the last third or fourth parts of our lives, seasoned women of consciousness, what I am calling The Shamanic WiseWoman, know that time is now precious to give our remaining gifts to the world, to “use up” our time here fulfilling our purpose, telling our stories and leaving our own unique legacy. Our spice and seasoning comes from years of hard knocks, tough lessons, and dark nights of the soul. As equally, it comes from the joyful celebrations, pleasures and adventures of our lives. We are intended to honor the gifts we have already given, and the thresholds already crossed, so that we can gain the energy to renew ourselves again and again. In the holy spaces we can create together as sacred women, we can rise from the ashes of old wounds and old ways, and consecrate our lives toward new ways of offering ourselves in service to our world, which can so greatly benefit from our wisdom. I am thoroughly enjoying walking as a WiseWoman these days, but that was not so until recently. I have been an eternal youth most of my life, choosing not to have children and instead focus on my sacred work and my “freedom” to be eccentric and forge new trails. I have been discovering new facets of myself as I embrace my wisdom and care less about self-image, accomplishment and achievement. I am also discovering a new kind of spiritual sensitivity, a profound connection to the animal kingdom, and a deepening connection to my own inner mate. These revelations were not available to me in younger versions of self. I am able to be more present-centered, less distracted by the glamour of the world, as I drop into the last cycles of my life. I no longer have goals, because I want to follow more of what inspires me and less of what drives me. Because I encounter it more often, I am drawn to explore the mysteries of death these days, and I look forward to doing this

with a strong circle of strong women. As we gather this first circle of Shamanic WiseWomen, age 50 and older, we will be tilling new soil for the women who are now in their 30’s and the 40’s to plant their wise seedlings. It is clearly a new day for women on earth, because if we are awake, spiritually alive, or initiated into the priestess within, we know that life is precious, time is precious, and there is so much to do, to give and to be. We are ready to be used up by life to the fullest extent possible! Are you eager to engage your own inner WiseWoman? Do you savor the experience of a womens’ circle? Are you willing to ceremonially integrate your life lessons so far? Are you ready to concentrate your life force on your sacred soul purpose, even as you move toward befriending the death mysteries? Join us for this inaugural 3-part series starting October 19th-23th at Isis Cove Community NC, which you can attend without committing to the full series. We move to a luxury villa in Central Florida in the winter in early February 2017, and to Cincinnati retreat center in the spring in May. An application process ensures you resonate with where we are going, yet you will be a huge part of the evolution of the Shamanic WiseWoman Process™.

Psychic Attack

How You Can Heal and Protect Yourself by Gary Matthews

W

e might think casting spells, poison arrows, magic attacks and voodoo are things of the past, but they’re actually very present in the modern day. These actions are often unconscious or denied. Whether we are aware of it or not, our words are more powerful than we know, and our thoughts are even more so. Gossip or “talking behind someone’s back” can do more psychic damage than we might imagine. Triangulating, or using another person instead of stating one’s issues directly to the person with whom one has an issue, is a common problem. It can be especially harmful if the people who are gossiping or thinking negative thoughts about someone are considered trusted friends of the person about whom they’re talking. Focused group energy can be very harmful. When a large group gets involved, the force of the attack is amplified. Tribal energy is quite strong. An example would be several people getting together to talk about so-and so without his/her knowledge. It can be like putting someone on trial. Our language reveals how contemporary this issue is. For example, we hear evidence in some metaphors such as, “She stared daggers at him,” or “He stabbed her in the back.” In the past, they might have taken a fingernail clipping or a piece of hair and used it to access someone’s energy field in order to bring harm. But these days we can electronically access each other’s energy fields and penetrate reputations, or other parts of identity, to purposefully, or even unconsciously, do damage. How does it feel to be “unfriended” by somebody on

Facebook? Or when someone tags you in a demeaning post? Innocuous as it may sound, it can hurt. Dark witchcraft is alive and well in the digital age. What can be done about this phenomenon? The first thing is for me to stop doing it myself. That is, I must make every effort to realize where I unconsciously talk behind people’s backs, triangulate, or gossip. Then, when I catch myself doing these things, the next step is to own it, and to directly address it with the person who may have been hurt. A further step is to refrain from retaliation when someone else attacks me in this way. It would only add gas to the fire. An attack can also be an opportunity to look deeply into one’s own unresolved issues. It may not be appropriate for somebody to point out my “character flaws” without being invited to do so, but it may show me a part of my shadow. At the same time, I am responsible for protecting my auric field, even electronically. This can be done through visualization of an impenetrable light shining out from me. A deep connection to Mother Earth and all of my ancestors are also keys. Asking for help from my spirit guides as well as human counselors, or from neutral third parties, can all be very helpful. Some people recommend using a mirror to reflect back to the “attacker” the energy that they’ve sent out, but this needs to be done very carefully. If I want harm to come to the attackers, then I have only propagated more violence. Like most people, I have personally experienced psychic attack. And I’m sure I’ve accidentally attacked others. I have helped folks recover from and grow after psychic attacks. I believe it is necessary to shed light on this phenomenon. I am certain that love is the law of the Universe. Love does not wish to hurt anyone. These truths have been very helpful to me. About the author: Gary Matthews (Grandfather Mowgli) is an ordained Shamanic Minister. Systemic

Constellations Finding Deeper Meaning Through Dynamic Group Process by Heidi Bright, MDiv dor

I

f you could watch a personal situation acted out before you in an objective way so you could gain clarity, would you want this gift? I did. I had lost my son, Tristan, to a heroin overdose and wanted to better understand the dynamics involved. Carolyn Zahner, an integrative psychotherapist, provided a container for watching the drama unfold through a Systemic Constellation Workshop. Zahner has facilitated systemic constellations since 2003. During a session, group members agree to represent a person or aspect of the client’s issue without knowing who or what they are representing, Zahner said. “Through a ‘knowing’ field, those participating have access to the knowledge, feelings, and awarenesses that belong to the people or aspects they are representing, even though they have little or no information about the situation. The representatives relate to other members in the Constellation through physical positioning and verbal statements, reporting physical sensations and emotions. The client witnesses and safely participates as the system moves toward clarity, healing, and resolution.” I participated in my first workshop in March. Before we started, Carolyn asked those who wanted to stand in for my situation to leave the room. Then I stated a question for the “field” to answer. The representatives returned and I chose three to represent people in my situation, yet these people knew neither the scenario nor the parts they were going to access. With amazing accuracy, these individuals—and then others in our group—began spontaneously acting out the emotions, thoughts, and physical sensations of my family dynamic. Not even Carolyn and I knew what roles a couple of the people adopted until the Constellation was completed 90 minutes later. One witness quickly adopted an aspect described as “predatory energy,” “villain,” “deep and dark.” The representative felt so overcome by the evil of this energy that she gagged and coughed up phlegm. After we ended the Constellation, we understood she had adopted the aspect “Heroin.” The woman who unknowingly represented Tristan described feeling paralyzed, freaked out, and nauseous. “I’m tired of feeling like I’m annoying to everybody… but being good is temporary because then the yuck will come back.” “Tristan” sometimes moved the woman in my role (“Mom”) between himself and “Heroin.” Other times he wanted to chase after “Heroin.” “Mom” saw herself as a protector. “Tristan” said “Mom” was not capable of protecting him or understanding the depth of his suffering and pain. “I’m not angry. She doesn’t know what she doesn’t know. I want her to

hear me and see me and stay present with me.” Carolyn, an addiction specialist, discussed this dynamic with me. The Constellation had revealed how I had alternated between attempting to save Tristan and resignation. This often happens with parents of addicts. Carolyn rephrased what “Tristan” had wanted even more: for me to be more present with him and to say to him, “Tristan, I see that you live a life of hell.” For years I had tried to help him find relief through medication and treatment. It was difficult to be present with him when his pain directed his addictive behavior. Nor could I offer unconditional love to him, because my agenda was to keep him alive. I had not grasped the searing depth of the agony his life had become, nor had I been able to reach the level of presence with him that he had wanted. Yet the Constellation itself became the vehicle for my giving Tristan—and myself—what we both needed to further heal. During the workshop I heard his suffering, I saw his pain, and I stayed present, with unconditional love. I understood more deeply his agony and the terrifying powerlessness we both experienced. Once I had witnessed Tristan’s hell, participants seemed stuck in the same pattern. For the dynamic to shift, Death needed to step in. As it entered the circle, more revealed itself. After the participants were told what they had represented, the woman who played “Tristan” turned to me and said, on his behalf, “I am so relieved. You let me fly. I’m whole again. There’s no pain. There’s no sadness. Thank you.” “Tristan” didn’t say, “I flew away.” He said, “You let me fly,” as if I had blessed his soul in its work. Carolyn added, “The only way for Tristan to be free of heroin was to pass.” I believe my son spoke through “Tristan,” because the next morning as I listened to randomly selected music on Pandora. com, a song from my son’s funeral played three times in 90 minutes. “Walking in the Air,” written by Howard Blake, is about a boy flying away with a snowman. I had let Tristan fly away to where there is neither pain nor sadness, and we remain connected with unconditional love. Best Relationships for

Happiness & Growth

by Steve Pavlina

W

e tend to value and appreciate relationships that help us grow stronger. This includes connections that bring us new resources, opportunities, knowledge, skills, advice, encouragement, and support. It’s intelligent to seek out such relationships. People commonly say that they just want love, but their behavior suggests otherwise. Instead of denying this reality, perhaps it makes more sense to embrace it. If you offer strengths that you don’t actually have, any relationship you attract will be based on continuing that manipulation. If, however, you offer what you can genuinely give, and you request what you genuinely desire, it’s generally easier to find compatible matches, and the matches you do find will be stronger. Healthy Relationships Strengthen Everyone The mistake many people make here is that they get caught up in projecting socially conditioned strengths, which usually involve shallow, temporary strengths such as looks, income, or social status. I believe we can strike a balance between seeing ourselves as whole and complete individuals while also acknowledging that good relationships can and do make us stronger. A healthy relationship strengthens all involved. An unhealthy one drains one or more people. This is why a commitment to personal growth is such a critical part of a long-term relationship. In the absence of such a commitment, the couple will start falling behind in their ability to tackle the various challenges of life. Instead of growing stronger together, they’ll grow weaker. Rarely does this happen at the same rate for each person, so it’s likely that one person will grow weary of such weakening and will choose to leave, while the other partner is left wondering what happened. Where a strong mutual commitment to personal growth exists, both partners strengthen each other as they grow stronger as individuals. This can help them create a stronger emotional bond as well. Finding Your Best Partners To begin a new relationship on the healthiest footing, there are three simple aspects to consider: 1. First, give some thought to prediction. What sort of relationship would predictably yield a positive outcome for you and the other person? Some partners will be predictably poor choices, while others will be amazing choices. If the prediction is weak from the get-go, it’s wise to hold out for a better match. Some people won’t date anyone without a stable income since they know from experience where that leads. Some peo-

14

Living W h o l e Journal

ple won’t date anyone who eats fast food every day since the long-term health problems are predictable. Some people won’t date anyone with an overly clingy family since the boundary issues and privacy violations are predictable. If you like to travel, and you meet someone who’s been traveling regularly, it’s predictable that you may travel together if you get involved. If you’re a long-term vegan, and you meet a fellow long-term vegan, it’s predictable that you’d reinforce your vegan lifestyle together. If you like to drink a lot, and you meet someone similar, it’s predictable that you could be alcoholics together. It’s wise to base your predictions on a person’s past behavior and circumstances, not on what they say they’ll do. Be careful about being overly influenced by someone’s words. Pay more attention to their long-term pattern of actions. Predictions aren’t always accurate of course, but do pay attention to them. We make predictions automatically, but we don’t always listen to them, much to our detriment. 2. Second, think about your desires. What would you like to explore with a new partner? To filter for your best matches, share your most important desires as early as possible. Don’t be afraid of turning people off. If someone isn’t compatible, then sharing your desires will indeed turn them off, and that’s a good thing. It shows respect for everyone’s time. Don’t jerk people around by encouraging them to invest in you if you’re unlikely to be a good match for them. When you share your desires with someone who isn’t compatible, you’ll usually get a cold or indifferent response. But when you do this with someone who is compatible, you may find yourself talking for hours and not even noticing the time pass because you’re both so in tune with each other. Don’t deny yourself this delightful situation by wasting time hiding your desires or projecting false desires. 3. Third, look for mutual empowerment. Just as you don’t want someone draining your energy, you shouldn’t be a drain on someone else either. One of the simplest ways to prevent that is with daily exercise. It’s a mood booster and is one of the best depression cures ever discovered. If that isn’t enough, then clean up your diet so you’ll have extra energy to give and so you won’t be vamping off other people. When you make yourself strong as an individual, you’ll add strength to your relationships, and you’ll be worthy of strong partners who can make you stronger in return. You’ll also be less likely to succumb to a draining relationship because you won’t tolerate such imbalance and unfairness in your life. It’s wonderful to have a partner’s love. It’s also wonderful to have a partner that helps you grow, which is love in action. Whether you’re already in a relationship or seeking a new one, pay attention to the three fundamentals of prediction, desire, and empowerment. When those three are aligned, you know you have a winner. Remember that the alignment is always your responsibility. Restore and preserve this alignment in your life as an individual, and then you can attract a compatible partner who will enhance that alignment. Those who judge others based on their sexuality have lost touch with their own souls. The soul cares nothing about such things. It has no interest in arbitrary distinctions. It has no interest in the form our sexuality takes. Through the eyes of essence, we see only essence. Through soulful eyes, sexuality is revealed as just another form of expression on the path to wholeness. But it’s not the heart of the matter. Our shared divinity is. We are not here together to shame each other into oblivion. We are here together to show each other God. And God comes in every possible form. ~ Jeff Brown

What if social media turns out to be the ultimate diversity training experience where each of us learns that our friends and family -- people who look JUST LIKE US -- are complete loony tunes who root for the wrong teams, vote for the wrong people, believe the wrong religion, are weird about their kids and pets, focus on the wrong things, and _________(fill in the blank)? Tolerance and love will rule! I don't know about you all, but I’m ready for the Fifth Dimension and the dawning of the flippin Age of Aquarius. ~ Rita Verderber

Every time you say, “I’m proud of you. I love you. You’re beautiful,” God releases strength into your child. He releases value, confidence, wisdom and favor. Those are not just nice words, it’s what the scripture calls the blessing. ~ Darlene Robinson My beloved father was a Baptist minister, who made his transition 38 years ago. He was and still is the love of my life. Last week, I was gifted with the Bible he purchased in Jerusalem in 1969. All of his notations and underlined passages are in it. I didnʼt even know it existed, and it was gifted to me last week. Iʼm grateful and humbled beyond words. This reminds me that “what is for you, cannot be withheld from you, and what isnʼt for you, you cannot have.” ~ Ester Nicholson

Empathy at all costs....that is the ever-presenting opportunity. It is only my own fear and shame that can keep me from having empathy for another. When I feel empathy is impossible, that’s the invitation to go within to find the barriers that would keep me from fully loving all pieces of myself. What I can’t have compassion for in you, I also don't have compassion for within myself. I embrace the challenge of having empathy even for my greatest “enemy,” because the work it requires of me brings me face to face with parts of myself that I have yet to accept, forgive, and love. Parts of myself that are painful to see. Parts of myself that sneakily hide behind blame and judgment of others. It is a daunting task to look beyond the outer blame and judgment, into the darkest parts of myself. But, when I commit to this work and I take the willful and revolutionary steps to embrace my own self...all of me...into my own resistant, yet loving heart, then I am free. Then, I am fully alive. Then, I am fully in love with the gift of being human. Then, and only then can I sit with you and see you clearly. ~ Lori Mueller

american

Politics by Norma Gentile

A

merican politics isn’t about American politics. It’s about the patterns and beliefs active right now within society that our (shared world-wide) culture is ready to look at. It is about what we, as Americans, need to make a choice about. We may choose to continue certain behaviors, or we may choose to change certain behaviors. But even the choice to continue certain behaviors will be made in a conscious manner because the candidates and the ‘circus of it all’ is bringing it to our attention. We are choosing between two distinct ways of living life. These two choices can most easily be summed up as questions:

1. Is this what we really want? 2. Is this what we are willing to tolerate? Our choice will define American society for the next several decades.

Which ʽdevilʼ will you choose? That old adage of choosing the ‘devil you know’ rather than the ‘devil you don’t know’ is at play here. What appears to be the ‘devil we don’t know’ only looks devilish because we don’t know it. Our tendency is to choose the discomfort we know, rather than chance a greater discomfort within the unknown. Of course, this keeps us in a constant state of discomfort! But we have the ability to make a choice, and to choose something new. We keep forgetting that if we choose something new, and it is uncomfortable, that we can always make another choice. However, our tendency is to assume that if we choose something new, (i.e. the devil we don’t know), that it will be worse than our current circumstances (the devil we do know). Our fear of the unknown creates a belief that there will be pain. Therefore we will not change because we fear the potential that lies within the unknown more than we fear the known pain.

Zinc

A Little Goes a Long Way Herbs ‘n Such, by Mimi Tagher

W

hat is Zinc? Though gold and silver might be thought of as our most precious metals, zinc would be a better choice for health and longevity. Zinc is a transition metal belonging to group 12 of the periodic table. It is called an “essential trace mineral because very small amounts of zinc are necessary for human health. Despite the low requirement, zinc is found in nearly every cell in the body and is a key to the proper function of more than 300 enzymes. It has more biological roles than all the other trace minerals combined. The difficulty is - the human body does not manufacture zinc, and has no way to store it.

Importance of Zinc Zinc is important for the immune system. It can be one of the best supplements to help fight colds and flu, especially in the winter months. It aids in digestion, and is important for memory, cell growth, sleep, mood, taste, smell, eye health, skin health, insulin regulation, and sexual function. It is extremely important for prostrate health, male fertility and to prevent cancer.

Statistics Experts say as many as 2 billion people around the world have diets deficient in zinc. Approximately 12% of all Americans do not consume the recommended daily amount of zinc and are at risk for zinc deficiency because of poor diet, digestion and absorption problems.

Get Tested! Though serum and plasma tests and hair analysis are some forms of zinc evaluation, an oral taste test works very well and is probably available in your natural healthcare providers office. The test is very simple and takes about 15 seconds. It will give you a good idea if you have adequate zinc levels, or if you have a mild, moderate or more severe zinc deficiency. These providers can also recommend good sources of zinc for you. I always prefer a whole food supplement source such as Trace Minerals - B12 or Zinc Liver Chelate from Standard Process. It is a simple and inexpensive way to augment your dietary intake of this important mineral. Consult with your healthcare provider to see which is the right choice for you.

Best sources of Zinc The ideal way to get zinc is through the food we consume on a daily basis. Some of the best sources include liver, oysters, grass fed beef, raw milk and cheese, pumpkin seeds, beans, spinach and sea vegetables. Remember, the over processing of foods, poor soil quality, and over cooking can affect the amounts of zinc available in these foods.

Create Your Day by Patti Kessler s you walk into your office or home, imagine you are walking into a gateway or portal of Creation. “See” the shimmering energy of the portal as you enter. Before you enter, imagine packing a small backpack with your intention for the day. What do you wish to create today?

A

Set Your Intention For example, if you are a teacher, your intention might be to create in your classroom an atmosphere of acceptance and support for every child, parent, teacher and staff member who enters your classroom, honoring and respecting each one for their being and for the gifts they bring to the world. See that intention going into your little backpack and bring it into your classroom. Once you arrive, close the door and take five minutes alone to visualize unpacking your intention for the day from the backpack and then allow your meditation to create your day.

Meditation Imagine sitting comfortably in your heart. This is the sacred chamber, your heart space. Energetically, travel down through your legs, out your feet and into the Earth. Ground and connect to Earth. Bring the energy back up through your feet, legs, and all the way up through the central channel of your body and out the crown of your head. Now, go up and connect to Source/ Creator. Plug into your Source, your divine connection, and bring that divine energy back into your heart space. Imagine sending your intention out from your heart. See that intention going out in all directions from your heart space, filling the Universe, going out to gather all the resources, energy, everything that is needed to create and manifest that intention. Watch the energy come back to the center of your heart space. Watch this energy go out and come back to your heart three times. On the third time, tuck the energy from your intention and the energy of those resources from the universe into your heart, knowing it is done. Trust and allow the Universe to bring your intention into the physical in perfect divine timing.

the house and admit to you that the paint used on the windows was defective and offer for the company to pay to have the windows repainted. But let’s look at the ultimate intention that is behind the immediate intention…The ultimate intention may be that the entire outside of the house is painted (including the windows), looking spectacular, completed quickly, easily, hassle-free and at a fair price.

2.

Let go of the “hows.” The immediate intention above had the “hows” attached, limiting the Universe in the delivery. If the final result is visualized free of how it will be accomplished, the Universe is free to bring this intention into the physical realm in the highest and best way - possibly in a way you could not even imagine!

3.

State your intention in the present. Use positive statements, without the words “no” and “not.” State what you want as if it is already reality.

4.

Remember, the Universe is on your side. Your desires and intentions are being fulfilled every minute of every day. Trust. Know it is done. Are you willing to receive what the Universe wishes to bless you with? Are there beliefs standing in the way of you receiving, trusting and allowing? A good energy worker can help you clear those beliefs.

5.

Know you are a powerful magnificent creator. What do you choose to create this day?

Tips for Creating

1.

Think about the ultimate fulfillment of what you desire. For instance, let’s imagine you are experiencing challenges with contractors following up on a botched paint job on your windows. You canʼt have the rest of the outside of the house painted until the windows are fixed. Your immediate intention may be to get the paint representative to come out to

HAMILTON COUNTY LIBRARY

The Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County is one of the oldest, largest, and busiest libraries in the United States, serving a population of over 800,000 with a collection of more than 9 million items. It is also among the most cost-effective libraries in the state of Ohio — and the nation — according to a new report just released by the Ohio Library Council (OLC). The Ohio Public Libraries ROI Report, released April 13, shows Ohio’s investment in public libraries is both cost-effective and of high value to Ohio residents.

For every dollar spent in Ohio by public libraries in 2013, Ohioans received $5.48 in total economic value. Ohio has the highest library use per capita in the nation and the state’s cost per transaction rate of $2.88 is well below the national average. But the return on investment is even more significant for those served by the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, where residents get $6.73 in value for every dollar invested. The Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County’s cost per transaction rate of $2.30 is more than half a dollar below the state’s average and well below the national average of $3.56. “This report clearly shows, in black and white, the economic value of the Library for the community we serve,” said Kimber L. Fender, the Eva Jane Romaine Coombe Director of the Library. “We take the responsibility of good stewardship very seriously

Practical

Power

Intuitive Insights, by Francine Haydon and Patricia Garry

uman beings are very powerful, magical beings. Miraculously, many vital functions in our bodies occur without any conscious input from us. Such as, breathing, our hearts pumping oxygenated blood through our bodies, nerve impulses being sent to our muscles to make our arms and legs move, and more. Our autonomous systems just handle things. Then you add in our conscious and subconscious minds. Suddenly we can do and create all kinds of things. Even the previously unimaginable can and does become real. We just have to set the intent to attract energy to our thoughts and dreams to manifest them. If you can imagine it, you can bring it into reality. That is why it is so important to keep your words, thoughts and actions positive. Like attracts like. If you constantly think negative thoughts, you will get just what you asked for. Remember, we came into this world with “free will” – the right to make our own choices every moment of every day. You, as a human being, have the divine right to choose how to react to situations and others’ actions. Instead of getting mad or angry and lashing out, you can instead choose to turn a negative into a positive by asking, “What can I learn from what just happened? What is the lesson?” You’ll be more knowledgeable, less stressed and a better person, too. Try it. You may discover you are manifesting a happier, more productive and peaceful life. The choices are yours. We are really so powerful! What we focus on is going to manifest – we are always living a life created from our thoughts from last week and last year. You are right now creating your life next week and next year. So stop complaining right now. You may not even realize how much time you spend talking about what is wrong rather

than what is right. But the Universe is listening, recording it all. Don’t complain about that, just change the channel. Find a way to say everything with gratitude, with joy, and with fun. Talk your future life into existence. When you’re talking to the neighbors, to the cashier at the convenience store, or to your co-worker, keep it upbeat. Say, “I’m looking forward to the concert tomorrow,” rather than pointing out all the flaws you see in the plan – the crowds, the parking, the rain, the noise, etc. Let’s just decide that this minute is already perfect, rather than pointing out the little things that don’t seem perfect. Maybe the little things that don’t seem totally perfectly will turn out to be half the fun, the stuff you will laugh about over the years. As we lighten up, our personal power lightens up. It’s quite amazing how that works. So expect the best, speak the best, believe the best and add joy and sparkle to your life every day. As you have more fun, you will spread more joy.

Ama Samy, a Zen master and Jesuit priest from India, has been offering annual Zen retreats (Sesshins) in Cincinnati for two decades. This year, he is visiting the U.S. again to lead two silent meditation retreats at St. Anne Retreat Center in Melbourne Kentucky, ten miles southeast of Cincinnati. His teaching embraces both Soto and Rinzai Zen traditions and draws from the resources of Christianity and other religions. There will be a weekend retreat, Sept 16-18, and a five-day retreat, Sept 19-24. Fr. Ama can also be joined for his whole eight-day visit. Both newcomers to meditation and longtime meditators are welcome. To find out more please visit: www.lovelandzen.org

Natural Healing Love Can Heal ALL Things by Tobin Blake

J

ordan Young had been dating author Tobin Blake’s daughter for two years when, days after his eighteenth birthday, he was diagnosed with an aggressive form of lymphoma. Within months, several rounds of chemotherapy had failed and top physicians determined that Jordan, now on a ventilator in the ICU, could not survive the widespread disease. But he did survive and, two years later, is cancer-free. Jordan’s journey contained the anatomy of a miracle. Precise steps were taken to bring Jordan back from the brink. Jordan’s path shows how methods based on spiritual laws can be used to transform fear, navigate the medical world, guide family and friends, and, most important, heal. It illustrates that with love, all things can be healed, hope is always justified, and nothing is impossible — no matter what the doctors say. Based on the book The Healing of Jordan Young © 2015 by Tobin Blake. Printed with permission of New World Library.

discover the corresponding psychological element to a physical disease—and fix it—the physical part will heal itself. Perhaps this healing will happen spontaneously, but even if it doesn’t, some effective treatment will come into play: a treatment will be discovered; the perfect healer will appear at perfect moment; the right medication will be found.

Lesson 2: Every thought has an impact on the body. Consider that the average person thinks some 60,000 thoughts every day. Your inner dialogue is a virtually unbroken stream of self-talk, and it has an enormous impact on how you feel, both physically and emotionally. Everything you think has an energetic charge to it, like electricity, that cannot be held apart from your body. Every thought either heals and balances the body or opens it to disease.

Lesson 3: Three conditions must be fully met.

Health is the Bodyʼs Natural State

When his doctors told him he was going to die, the first thing I said to my friend Jordan Young was, “With love, all things can be healed.” The cancer, which started in his lymph system, had by this point choked his lungs with dozens of tumors that spread out in a stranglehold of death. He was just a kid— eighteen. In our world, sickness seems like the natural course of the body, but it doesn’t have to be. It may be hard to believe, but health is actually the body’s natural state. It is sickness that is unnatural. In order to heal or remain healthy, you don’t really need to do anything. Without interference, your body will automatically settle into a state of balance and wellness. When you become ill, what you really need to figure out is what has gone wrong. Jordan and I learned many powerful, life-changing lessons during our journey together. I’d like to share a few of these with you now.

Lesson 1: The body and mind are not separate. All authentic, lasting healing begins with understanding this premise. In fact the body and mind are so intricately linked, where one ends and the other begins is something even science cannot unravel. Your mind has a tremendous impact on your physical state. When you become ill there is almost always some reflection of that illness in the mind. So, if you can

1. The patient must believe healing is possible. 2. The patient must want to heal 3. The patient must feel they deserve to heal. Unless the above three conditions are fully met, no treatment or medication will ultimately be successful, because the patient will be fighting his or her own beliefs and desires. How can a patient truly heal if they don’t want to, don’t think they deserve to, or cannot even conceive of healing being possible? It is essential, then, that a patient uncover every hidden doubt about healing and urge to be ill, otherwise the seeds of the disease will remain. Jordan and I worked together on these lessons, and other lessons of love and healing, for months. I am not claiming that Jordan’s healing was miraculous. Many physical treatments came into play. But, as a matter of fact, however it came about, Jordan did, remarkably, find himself at just the right hospital at just the right time, where just the right healer appeared at the just the right moment. And the right medication was found, just when all hope seemed lost. One bizarre coincidence led to another, and that’s how Jordan became “that guy”—you know the one: the guy who survived a terminal diagnosis. About the author: Visit Tobin Blake at www.TobinBlake.com
