Tara L. Robinson, editor@wholelivingjournal.com

Lighting the Way

I

t’s Whole Living Journal’s birthday! We’re celebrating eleven years of serving the community. We’ve grown a lot since the first issue in 2003. WLJ is now online, on air, in print and Infusion…helping others live happy and live healthy. Eleven has always been my favorite number so this particular anniversary is even more personal and special to me than last year’s big decade celebration. And boy, we’ve done a lot of moving and grooving this past year! We overhauled our look with a new logo and began offering the community a chance to experience whole living “live” every month as Infusion Cincinnati. Now we’ve launched a new state-of-theart website where the community can engage online through a unique social network called Whole Living Community. Our Online Directory and Local Events pages have expanded and will serve as invaluable resources as they continue to grow. An article database is available through the website where we’ll be able to include some of the fabulous articles that are submitted to us but don’t quite make it into our print publication due to space constraints. All this, along with a substantial library of Waves of a New Age radio interviews with today’s leaders and an online version of each issue of WLJ formatted to be easily read on mobile devices, makes www.WholeLivingJournal.com the “hub” for all things involving living happy, healthy and whole. We’re commemorating our anniversary with a special event. The Power, Passion and Purpose of Women will be held on Friday, May 16th from 2-4pm at Elemental OM in Montgomery. In her powerful book A Woman’s Worth, Marianne Williamson says, “A woman is meant to hold the heart of the world within her hands. She must cater to it and minister to it and kiss it when it cries. When we do not recognize our cosmic function, our own hearts break, and so does the heart of the world.” Now, more than ever, it’s crucial for every woman to be honest about her power, her passion, and her purpose…and begin walking in that truth. For as she draws closer to her own center, and increases the density of that space, so too will others be drawn by its gravitational pull to join her in that sacred place within a woman᾿s heart which contains the DNA to heal all. The Power, Passion and Purpose of Women will also serve naturally as a great networking opportunity. In A Woman’s Worth Marianne continues, “We must take the communion of women very seriously at this time and do all we can do to support other women in reaching for the stars. There cannot be too many glorious women.” Please join us as we support each other in reaching for the stars. This event is free. No RSVP is necessary, but please arrive on time because there’s a lot to cover in only two hours.

Speaking of supporting each other, my friend and Waves of a New Age co-host Judy Peace recently supported me in a big way. In my two most recent Letters from the Editor I chronicled my journey with Dr. Wayne Dyer…my interview with him in December which led to an amazing story of synchronicity and divine intervention, which led to his publishing an email I sent to him telling him the story of what happened after our interview. Judy knew of these events as each piece unfolded and when she learned of the “Writing from Your Soul” writer’s conference being presented in Ft. Lauderdale at the beginning of May by Dr. Wayne Dyer and Hay House President Reid Tracy she immediately offered to organize a fundraiser so that I could attend the conference and not only meet Dr. Wayne Dyer in person but also be eligible to win a $10,000 advance and book publishing contract with Hay House. After a lot of soul searching, self-doubt, fear of judgment, fear of rejection, etc., I finally agreed to let Judy implement her plan for the fundraiser. She launched the “Let’s All Light One Another’s Way” campaign and it was a smashing success. In less than 72 hours over 90% of the goal was reached and before the end of the first week 100% of the trip was covered. I’m writing this before I leave for Ft. Lauderdale, but will likely have already attended the writer’s conference by the time you’re reading this. As a thank you gift to the community for making this special experience happen for me, I’ll be presenting a free writer’s workshop here in Cincinnati where I’ll share everything I learn at the conference and answer questions about the publishing industry. Information will be posted on the Whole Living Journal website and on Facebook as the plans and details for the workshop develop. I want to thank Judy Peace for all her efforts in making my dream a reality and to everyone who contributed to ‘lighting my way.’ My heart is overflowing with gratitude; I’m eager to pay it forward. I also want to thank all our loyal advertisers who make every issue of WLJ possible. We wouldn’t be able to do the work we do, offer the resources we offer, and help all those we help without your support. The past eleven years have been incredible, and the activity in the past year has been unprecedented. I fully expect the coming year will be our best year yet; I’m excited to share it with all of you. We’ll continue to do what we’ve always done, serve the community and promote happy, healthy, whole living. Stay tuned as we continue to spread our wings, help others spread theirs…and light the way for one another. Happy 11th Anniversary WLJ! In Service and Gratitude,

NEXT MEETINGS: MAY 13 & JUNE 10 Infusion Cincinnati, where Whole Living Journal comes to life every month, is a time when people who care about bettering themselves and the world come together to connect through music and community discussion. Infusion is like nothing else. Not quite a church, yet not a corporate group, Infusion is designed to ignite and inspire every person exactly where they are. In March, Kimberly Pridemore Sage Woman facilitated an important conversation about practicing unconditional love and forgiveness for self and others. She drove home the message that love for and trust of oneself is a prerequisite for truly being a force in the world. Musical artist and rapper Kim Belew brought the house down with a sing-along of the Black Eyed Peas and had everyone dancing on their feet. Her friend Chelley Seibert moved the audience with an original song about trusting oneself. In April, WLJ editor Tara L. Robinson spoke about the 3 keys and 6 steps for Activating Grace in our lives. This inspired a lively conversation in which others shared their own experiences with encountering grace. Every Infusion meeting is donation basis and includes music, talk and community discussion about living with passion and purpose. 2nd Tuesdays 6:30-8pm at Rohs Street Cafe, 245 W. McMillan St, 45219. Leave extra time for parking, and plan to stay after for coffee and conversation. Be a part of the movement and let YOUR light shine! SPIRITUAL POWER

(Adapted from The Ecstasy of Surrender: 12 Surprising Ways Letting Go Can Empower Your Life Harmony Books, 2014) ometimes it’s hard for the linear mind to grasp that spiritual power is an infinite source of good ideas and grace. But, once you give connecting to spiritual power a chance, you’ll discover its real world advantages. Narrow-mindedness will keep you from experiencing expanded consciousness. Your higher power is more perceptive than your intellect can ever be. The best way to experience (not just think about) spirituality is to get in the habit of surrendering more and more to the unconditional love in your heart. This works beautifully with all spiritual beliefs, traditionally religious or not. You get there by first getting quiet within yourself, an enormously spiritual act worth continuing to develop. Stillness is the doorway to the heart, and to heaven. What is heart? In everyday terms, you can see it in the adoring way your puppy looks at you or in children’s innocence. The heart is understanding what goes beyond fear or what makes it feel safe to be authentic around people: it’s Big Love, not stingy love, or love with strings. Nelson Mandela, Gandhi, and the Dalai Lama are models for the heart from whom we can learn. To me, heart is the most attractive quality in anyone. If I’m pushing too hard, it helps me let go. If I’m frustrated or overwhelmed, it centers me. If I’m confused, it provides clarity. When you reach further than your mind and let go to the limitless reach of the spirit, the answer is waiting. To connect with your heart, practice the following meditation.

S

Surrender to Spirit 3 Minute Heart Meditation

Identify a situation where control isn’t working. Take a break from trying to make it happen. Instead, spend three minutes (only!) meditating on the heart and surrendering to a power greater than your will. This meditation is meant to be a quick surrender (you can meditate longer at another time). Doing this once or throughout the day feels good, even ecstatic; let in the well-being.

1. Relax in a quiet place. Find a spot where you won’t be interrupted. Then sit upright in a comfortable position. Keep your back straight--a signal to yourself to stay awake. Close your eyes, a way to get closer to what’s sacred in yourself.

Become still. If thoughts intrude, let them pass by like clouds in the sky. Take a few long deep breaths to release tension from your body and relax your jaw. When thoughts arise, keep returning to the rhythm of your breath.

2. Focus on your heart. Next, rest your palm above your heart in the middle of the chest, the energy center for compassion, what’s called “the little sun.” Notice what you feel. Relax into the sensations. Don’t hold back. See what you experience. It may be warmth, clarity, comfort, a melting of tension, joy, ecstasy. Don’t question or analyze. Allow it to happen. 3. Surrender the problem to spirit. While focusing on the heart, inwardly ask your higher power for assistance. You can be very specific, such as “Please help me find a more inspiring career.” Don’t attempt to figure it out. Try to release any attachment to an outcome. Simply say, “Thy will, not mine, be done.” There is nothing else “to do.” Simply let go. See what happens. After practicing this meditation, stay aware of new insights or changes in circumstances. Enlisting the heart invites in the right kind of power. As the poet Goethe says, “Be bold--and mighty forces will come to your aid.” About the author: Judith Orloff, MD is a psychiatrist, intuitive healer, and NY Times bestselling author. Her latest book is The Ecstasy of Surrender. Dr. Orloff synthesizes the pearls of traditional medicine with cutting edge knowledge of intuition, energy, and spirituality. She passionately believes that the future of medicine involves integrating all this wisdom to achieve emotional freedom and total wellness. Sabbath in the Connected

World

by Randy Weeks

00 years ago, the electric light weakened the power of night over the booming industrial age. From the 1960’s forward, air conditioning eroded the imperative to slow down in the dog days of summer. Today, after just a decade or two, the Internet and mobile technology have seemingly erased waiting, distance, and separation from our lives. The online, connected life has become so constant and so vital to us, in such a relatively short period of time, that we sometimes forget what it was like to not have the whole world available in glass topped boxes that fit in our pockets. The youngest among us can’t even imagine it. Connectivity has blurred the lines of information, shopping, entertainment, and communication, making everyone and everything a click or a tap away. In a generation we᾿ve gone from the novelty of cassette-driven answering machines and VHS movie rentals to global text messaging and Netflix binges. News is much more now than stories of other people and places. It’s a personal, interactive feed of the lives of our families and friends, a broadcast we can all tap into, any time. The concepts of work day and work place have been made flexible, even fluid by the anytime, anywhere connectivity of business.

1

The Cost of Constant Connection

The benefits of speed and constant connection are clear enough, but we have a tendency to ignore the costs: the distraction, the anxiety of keeping up, and the stress of engaging whenever new messages demand it. We᾿re well-lit, climatecontrolled, and always-on. It᾿s exhausting, and it causes us to think and engage at a more shallow level than at our natural, creative, and well rested best. We᾿re analog beings engaging a digital world of our own creation. Talk about parents not having the boundless energy of their children. We are not built for the speed or the 99.9999% uptime we expect of our Internet services, but we find ourselves trying to be. The seduction of the always-on world forces us to act sometimes before we are ready, speak before we know what to say, and respond before we feel the truth of what we know. Email, text messages, and Facebook feeds move so fast that they bring an artificial urgency to respond without taking time for meaning, reflection, or quiet.

8

Living W h o l e Journal

Broadcaster and author Krista Tippet says, ‟Real quiet is presence. Not an absence of sound, but of noise.” Our hyper-connected world generates a lot of psychic noise. Every minute of every day produces more than 2.5 million google searches, 700,000 Facebook posts, 348,000 tweets, and God only knows how many funny cat videos.

The Need for a Digital-Age Sabbath

For lack of renewal time, our wellbeing is threatened by the noise and demands of our busy lives. To reclaim the quiet of presence and absence of noise we must craft or restore for ourselves some practice of intentional, ritual downtime. We need a Digital-Age Sabbath that we can honor amidst the demands to be always accessible and active. It᾿s not practical or even possible for most of us to unplug permanently from the connected world, but we can manage better with mindful attention and intention. Whether one day a week, an hour a day or some other consistent, conscious commitment to our human needs, the rest and renewal will help us fit our souls back into our lives. We can create personal, sacred (not accidental) space for a nap, a lazy walk, a glowing candle, a meal, a coffee conversation, journaling, gardening, a mini vacation, a renewed love affair, a front porch meditation...Then finish Sabbath time with a few minutes of intentional appreciation for the curious blessings of this amazing life. The connected world will be there when we come back. And we᾿ll be better for our time away. (Recommended reading: Sabbath, by Wayne Muller) Note: Randy Weeks will present this topic and facilitate a community discussion at Infusion Cincinnati on Tuesday, June 10th, 6:30-8pm at Rohs Street Cafe in Clifton. All are invited to participate and share their views. www.infusioncinnati.com About the author: Randy Weeks is CEO of NetCrafters. Saints of the Past Were Much Like Today᾿s Pope

As the world watches with curiosity and admiration as Pope Francis tries to turn around the Catholic Church, one might wonder what the beloved Saint Francis of Assisi and Saint Clare might have thought of this Herculean effort. After all, they were among the first to call for a simple, unembellished church that teaches the love of all things while touching the heart of joy in all. A leading secular expert on Saint Francis, author Bruce Davis, Ph.D. captures these special saints and their reverence for all things divine, including their real life soaring love for each other and their shared love of God, in his new book The Love Letters: Saint Francis and Saint Clare of Assisi Meet Pope Francis. “Seemingly a day does not pass by when there is not a new quote or an act of humility from Pope Francis. Recently he

advises all that ‘we know God by having an open mind.’ ‘Each of us,’ he says, ‘must look into our hearts.’ Truly Pope Francis is bringing alive the spirit and life of St. Francis of Assisi,” says Davis. ‟There has been too much self-denial and sacrifice embedded in religion for too long. A true spiritual life is neither self-sacrifice nor being selfish. Battling parts of ourselves does not lead to peace but inner conflict. Being poor and suffering is not a path to holiness. Similarly being successful and healthy can be a distraction if we are too busy acquiring possessions. The path is not really about having possessions or no possessions, having desires or trying to have none. St. Francis and Pope Francis point to a spiritual practice in silence with no distractions. Today, we call it unplugging or disconnecting. When the mind is

not so occupied and busy, awareness of the heart naturally begins. Inside each of us there is a vastness of presence. From the well of silence in our heart comes generosity, gentleness, innocence, and joy. Today with all the humility and beauty being demonstrated by Pope Francis, let᾿s speak clearly about the end of putting ourselves down in order to lift someone else up. It makes no sense and never has. Time to lift ourselves and everyone with a sincere and meaningful spiritual life like St. Francis long ago and Pope Francis today,” asserts Davis. www.GraveDistractions.com

You will never enjoy the fruits of good health by focusing on avoiding disease. You must turn your attention fully toward the incredible joy of health to actually experience it. - Jack E. Armstrong, D.C.

Spiritual Elitism ‟Don᾿t Save Me, I᾿ll Save You”

by Jennifer Annenberg here is movement which involves saving people, the planet, and all other living things. It’s called New Age Spirituality. Under this guise, we are promised an assignment that allows us to save unsuspecting people from their ignorant and backward ways. We are given a vocabulary that sounds convincing, i.e. lightworker, shape shifter, etc. and are told that we are ‟needed.” We believe we have to spread this word as efficiently and quickly as possible because time is running out. In order to convince others that they need something from us, we create seminars, telecasts, webinars, and a whole lot of books. It is imperative for others to understand that something is wrong with them. They are obviously broken. They need us and our message to become whole; or at the very least, more like us. How arrogant have we become to believe that our way of thinking is in any way, shape, or form better or more superior than anyone else’s? How far have we truly evolved if we feel that our way is the only way to achieve enlightenment? How conscious are we if we can look at others as ‟needing to be fixed”? There are seven billion human expressions on the planet right now. Not one ῾way᾿ is better, more superior, or more expansive than another. It merely is. And to judge creation is to deem one particular expression in some way superior to another. The Buddha said, ‟The other is You.” So what makes your experience better or more qualified than someone else᾿s? Nothing. The ego will sell you a bill of goods saying that you are different and here to save people. This is no different than pilgrimages or inquisitions of the past. In those times, whatever the leading thought system was that was deemed to be superior was spread to the ‟unenlightened” masses so that they could achieve redemption. Intellectual, religious, or spiritual pride identifies with the egotistic part of the mind that says, ‟I have the answers,” or ‟I know better.” Unfortunately this just creates more suffering because it is all too easy for us humans to fall into the trap of believing we need someone or something to make us whole since we’ve always been taught something’s wrong with us. It creates the victim role where we believe we need someone other than ourselves to get across this imaginary threshold from brokenness to wholeness. This is another product of the human ego. There is no threshold. It’s just another cleverly marketed idea that will sell many books, yet make millions of people feel desperately inadequate. Since the beginning of time, all great avatars and teachers

have instructed us to look within to find the truth. For the truth of who we really are will set us free. When we feel manipulated, controlled, exploited, or guilted into believing that something is wrong with us or that we are not as enlightened or awakened as someone else, this causes fear and condemnation, separating us from each other. This creates ‟the other” mentality. Author David Hawkins wrote, ‟When we truly love something and, thereby become one with it, it is because we see its intrinsic perfection. In fact, its faults are part and parcel of its perfection, for all that we see in the universe is in the process of becoming. In that process, its perfect evolution is part of that perfection. Thus the half unfolded-flower is not an imperfect flower that needs defense. On the contrary, its blossoming is proceeding with precise perfection according to the laws of the universe. Likewise, each and every individual on the planet is unfolding, growing, learning, and reflecting that same perfection.” And A Course In Miracles (ACIM) teaches, ‟A miracle is a correction. It does not create, nor really change at all. A miracle merely looks on devastation, and reminds the mind that what it sees is false.” The mind makes the mistaken assessment that it is seeing something wrong in the form of devastation, ignorance or unenlightenment. Yet, the miracle does not make anything new. It merely adjusts the mistaken assessment of what already is. We are already perfection. We do not need to do anything to become perfection. All we need to do is to end our attack on our own perfection, which we project onto others. We think of a miracle as some amazing change. But a miracle changes nothing. It simply takes away a false perception. It removes the veneer of ‟wrong” we have laid over the perfection and innocence of ourselves and others, and reveals the unchanging, never-ending perfection that we simply have not been able to see there before. Are You Ready? “I will remind you of your magnificence, until you are utterly, completely, unapologetically, able to see it in Yourself.” xoxo Jennifer About the author: Jennifer Annenberg is Creative Director for Jennifer Annenberg Productions. Car Care vs.

YOU

Care

by Eileen Lebowitz

W

hy do we take better care of our cars than ourselves? Think about that for a second. Like a car, we are made up of thousands of parts that keep us running. But the fact is, we tend to take better care of 3,400 lbs. of plastic and sheet metal than we do of ourselves. How many hours have you spent cleaning your car? How many hours have you spent focusing on yourself? We rush to call the mechanic if a little check engine light goes on or if the engine coughs a bit, but we ignore tightness in our chests, fatigue or an odd mole. We put off mammograms, pap smears and colonoscopies for months thinking, “It’s nothing. It will get better. I’ll get to it.”

Replaceable Car, Irreplacable Body

The fact is we spend more time taking care of our replaceable cars and not enough on our irreplaceable bodies. We don’t put off scheduled maintenance checks or oil and filter changes because we know the engine will burn up without oil. If the shocks go bad, we are in for a bumpy ride. We change the spark plugs because we understand they need to ignite properly. There are many, many parts that must be cared for in order for our car to not just run, but run in healthy condition and good working order. So, why are we so lax when it comes to taking care of ourselves? Why aren’t

we on a regular maintenance schedule? Could it be because we are so overloaded that we operate on cruise control?

The Worry Epidemic

The reality is we are worried: about work; about taking care of our children; about finances; about aging parents; about how we will make ends meet on social security; about grandchildren and about life transitions. We are so consumed with worrying, that our daily routines run on auto-pilot and we don’t remember the drive home, what we ate for lunch today, or wait...did we eat at all?

Time to Recharge Our Batteries It’s time to shut our motors down and just idle. We need to make ourselves a priority and make sure all of our parts are oiled up and running smoothly. We need to schedule routine check-ups. We need to occasionally check the junk in the trunk and get rid of what we don’t need. We need to explore what’s under the hood. We need to figure out what needs to be recharged and what filters need to be replaced; we need to fix our shocks for a smoother ride and we need to keep our spark plugs ignited.

A Backward Equation The equation of taking better care of our cars than ourselves is backwards. I’ve learned I must do my best to keep myself in excellent running

May-June 2014

condition. I’ve resolved that I will pay attention to my motor, I will not allow myself to overheat, I will put myself on regular maintenance checks, and I will learn how to idle. I hope you will join me and do the same. About the author: Eileen Lebowitz is Director of Resolve to Evolve and Soul to Sole Journey, both divisions of RTE, Ltd. An

Eggstraordinary

Resurrection

by Heidi Bright, M.Div.

n March 2009, I received a warning during a night vision. In my dream, an ogre stole the contents of my beautifully carved egg. Upon waking, I realized I had allowed important aspects of my feminine nature to be abducted. The symbolism foretold an encounter with a transformative experience. I remained blissfully ignorant of the terrors lying in wait. Four months later an ogre pounced on me in real life, stealing more than just the contents of my ovaries’ eggs. Feminine body parts below my ribs were surgically excised: cervix, uterus, tubes, and ovaries, along with six inches of intestines. And the ogre planted more of its own voracious eggs inside my lungs. Pathologists determined I had the most aggressive type of end-stage cancer. Doctors expected me to die within months. Numb with shock, I found myself flung headlong into the fight of, and for, my life. A community of supporters gathered around my hospital bed and around the region to pray fervently for a specified period. During that hour I drifted in and out of consciousness, yet to my surprise, resurrection images rose into my awareness: my rising out of a coffin, my rising from underneath gray gravel, and my rising when a huge stone was lifted off me by an angel. I felt gratitude mingled with confusion as I pondered their meaning. Still reeling, I knew if I wanted to survive, I needed to do everything I could to move toward a cure—acquiescing to Western masculine curing treatments while rigorously applying Eastern feminine healing techniques. To fully integrate both, I learned to balance on the teeter-totter between doing and being, controlling and allowing, fighting and surrendering. Amazing family members and friends cared for and supported me every step of the way. The combination kept the incredibly rare sarcoma’s growth in check. It bought me two years, yet it wasn’t enough to evict the cancer ogre. During July 2011, after two major surgeries, forty-two intense chemotherapy treatments, and two clean CT scans, my oncologist ordered another peek inside. A new half-inch tumor, staking a claim on critical terrain next to my heart, taunted me from the scanned image. Shock. Devastation. Tears. Despair. During the next five weeks, while I languished before yet another surgery, the sarcoma hatchling mocked my arsenal of complementary healing practices by mushrooming to 2.5 inches. I had one final, terrifying strategy up my sleeve. Leaping with faith, family, and friends, I left my husband of 22 years. I endured a second lung surgery. During the post-operative checkup, I felt struck on the head when I heard these dreaded words: “You need to get ready for Hospice.”

Terrified of physical agony and of suffocating to death, I returned to my apartment. After days of depression, I decided to continue my focus on psychotherapy, spiritual disciplines, energy work, nutrition, spending time with others, having fun, and simply being in the present moment. If I was going to die, I was not going softly into that dark night. During those months, my understanding of my inner self and my outer reality continued shifting in positive ways. My sense of well-being expanded. My feelings of empowerment grew. Profound peacefulness permeated my days. Dreams of teeming plants filled my nights. My life exhibited all the hallmarks of inner transformation and healing. As of this writing, my CT scans have remained clean. Then came the spring equinox in 2013, eleven days before Easter resurrection celebrations. I felt drawn to Serpent Mound, a prehistoric effigy near Peebles, Ohio. After greeting the sunrise there, I gazed into the open oval beyond the serpent’s head. Unbidden, a waking dream filled my vision. The egg from my initial dream nested in the grass, its open front facing the heavens. Bright light engulfed its shell. In the center lay the body of a woman, radiance surging through her. She stood up, as if being born. Dawning awareness revealed three things: I had been the emptied egg in my initial dream; I was the egg’s contents that had been stolen by the ogre; and I now was the radiant woman rising up out of the egg. My transformation was complete. Profound joy and gratitude filled my body. Just as the rebirth images in the hospital had foretold, I have burst forth like a phoenix hatchling, abandoning the ashes of my old, broken shell. My resurrection wings continue to unfurl and catch the winds of ascension. Editor᾿s Note: Heidi᾿s story is a wonderful example of the power, passion and purpose of women. Horses are

Healers

by Michelle Griffith

ttempting to explain the nuances of inspiration and healing work that can be accomplished in the presence of horses is about as easy as reshaping a mountain. Raining down with buckets of facts and information as a futile attempt at eroding the mountain is not my intent. Rather, these words are put forth as an invitation to reflect on your personal experience. How do you embrace presence and connect with your personal truth? The beauty of working with horses is that every interaction with our four legged friends is from the most authentic form of presence. They don’t create metaphorical and figurative references. Horses don’t lie or create myths and they don’t use words to talk a situation into a swirling vortex of “what if” and “should have” drama. A classic example of how humans can create a drama vortex is attempting to give and receive honest feedback. At one time or another, most of us have been in a situation where an individual says what they think somebody wants to hear rather than being honest. It is challenging to give and receive honest feedback. How can I be direct without creating drama? How well am I staying open to receiving the positive intent behind constructive criticism?

A

Horses are Master Truth Detectors

In partnership with horses I have witnessed a lot of honest feedback. Horses are masters of the moment. Direct without drama. Standing in truth. They are present, holding space, while we humans drift in and out of presence trying to discover our own personal truth. Horses are sentient beings. They perceive and feel things. A lot is written and discussed about how horses reflect human energy and emotion. In Equine Gestalt Coaching we believe that horses use their acute sensory awareness to perceive these

human sensations. Rather than just being a reflection, horses have unique abilities to interact and communicate back to a person. Some horses are gifted lie detectors, others are chakra balancers and some offer distinct feedback through physical position or action which can be described as pantomime for lack of a better adjective. Horses embrace people with their hearts. They gently challenge us to connect with our own hearts. As a coach in the process, I serve as a partner and interpreter for the horse by guiding my client to connect within through somatic awareness and mindfulness in the moment. The joy of my work is that it flows from the energy of the present moment. For each moment in contact with the horse, there are as many different messages received as there are people taking part in the interaction. The process speaks to everyone in the space where they are at the present moment. When people share space with horses, their energy changes. Sparks of knowingness and presence suddenly seem real. We take notice of what is happening in the moment. We get out of our heads and into our hearts. We connect with our truth. The Skinny on Eggs - Including the controversial Yolk Contrary to popular belief, there’s no need for most people to avoid eggs, including whole eggs with yolks, to control or prevent heart disease and high cholesterol. That’s in part because dietary cholesterol appears to have little negative effect on blood cholesterol levels. A recent study even found that eating whole eggs can increase the heart-protective HDL cholesterol in our bodies. Unless you eat a vegan diet, with no animal foods at all, you can have a few eggs a week without worries. Meanwhile, the good news about nutrients in egg yolks

keeps piling up. They provide one of the best sources of B Vitamins, along with a couple of beneficial carotenoids that protect vision. Eggs – with or without the yolk – are a low-cost, high-protein food that is incredibly versatile in cooking. We like the following recipe as a relatively light supper, or for any other meal of the day. Look for “pastured” eggs that come from chickens that are allowed to roam freely and eat a variety of feed; those are the chickens that lay the tastiest, most nutritious eggs.

Eggs with Quinoa, Smoked Salmon and Avocado Ingredients: 1 cup quinoa, cooked according to package directions, seasoned with salt and pepper, if desired

(Serves 2)

2 T cooking oil (canola, peanut or olive) ½ cup yellow bell pepper, diced 5 eggs, lightly beaten

1 ripe avocado, peeled, cut into cubes and sprinkled with lime juice 4 ounces smoked salmon

2 T plain yogurt Salt and pepper, to taste ¼ cup grated Parmesan or Romano cheese

Instructions: Arrange quinoa, avocado cubes and slices of smoked salmon on two dinner plates, leaving room for the cooked eggs. Heat oil over medium heat in a medium, nonstick frying pan. Add pepper and cook, stirring, until they start to soften. Meanwhile, stir the yogurt into your beaten eggs and add salt and pepper. Pour egg mixture into pan with peppers and scramble softly until eggs reach desired level of doneness. (This only takes a couple of minutes.) Sprinkle with cheese and divide onto prepared plates. Avocado: A perfect food? This delectable fruit traces its ancient origins to what became Mexico, which still produces some of the world’s best specimens. Known in parts of India as butterfruit for its creamy, satisfying mouthfeel, avocado strikes us as one of the best foods on the planet. What a nutritional powerhouse it is: higher than almost all other fruits in protein, packing more than half your daily recommended intake of fiber, loaded with the healthiest type of fat and rich in vitamins and minerals. Did we mention that it’s delicious all on its own? Or peel and slice a ripe one, mash it with a fork, add a squeeze of lemon or lime and a little salt and pepper, and spread it on bread or toast for a quick lunch. We like to make a sandwich with a slice of sharp cheese and a few leaves of spinach on toasted whole wheat. You’ll be getting a lot of potassium, vitamins C, E and an assortment of B vitamins along with the fiber and healthy monounsaturated fat. An average avocado has about 200-235 calories

Love

Your Body

Cleanse With Colonics by Karen Fessler ot a day goes by that I don’t have a client in my office lamenting a long list of aggravating health conditions including, but not limited to: gas, bloating, indigestion, constipation, fatigue, coated tongue, fetid breath, dark circles under the eyes, cold hands and feet, brittle nails and hair, pot belly, tension, allergies, food sensitivities, irritability, nausea, nervousness, depression, anxiety, asthma, headaches, backaches, joint aches and rashes. Most have been feeling bad for so long they don’t even remember what it was like to feel “normal.” Eleven years ago I found myself similarly frustrated with not only my symptoms, but a general lack of ability to sustain any lasting relief. I had spent decades of my adult life suffering with the long list of health issues listed above, as well as, fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis and chronic fatigue. In seeking the reasons why I had all of these symptoms, syndromes and diseases, I was continually frustrated with the answers, “Take these pills...drink this stuff...eat more prunes...eat more fiber...seek psychotherapy.” A friend suggested I try Colonics of Northern Kentucky at The Holistic Wellness Center (formerly known as The Becky Parth Holistic Wellness Center) and that is when I truly began my journey towards improving my health. Colon Hydrotherapy is a clean and relaxing flow of filtered, temperature-controlled water gently circulating throughout the colon, coaxing the body to yield toxins and waste that have built up inside. It is an ancient time-honored, gentle cleansing of the colon. Anyone who has ever eaten junk foods, fatty foods, sweets, caffeine, sodas, chemically treated and preserved foods, processed food, or, in fact anything that modern culture deems edible, will benefit from Colon Hydrotherapy

I was happy to see Colonics featured recently in “O” The Oprah Magazine (February, 2014). “O’s Executive Editor, Amy Maclin, feeling “sluggish” and “toxic” spent a weekend and a Texas retreat which included juicing, spa treatments and colonics. After a colonics treatment she described herself as, “...hopping off the table feeling zesty, and buoyant and, honestly, reborn.” In addition to Colon Hydrotherapy, additional services at The Holistic Wellness Center include; Acmos Energy Balancing, Acupuncture, Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), Far Infrared Sauna, Functional Diagnostic Nutrition, Hypnotherapy, Nutrition Response Testing (NRT), Massage Therapy and Reflexology. Clean Up Your Body᾿s Pollution

Like the city sewer system, the six-foot tube we call the colon, or large intestine, determines whether or not our body is polluted. Daily rigors of modern diet and lifestyle put stress on the colon and waste, plaque and unhealthy toxins accumulate, which may impact the quality of elimination. Ron Kennedy, M.D., from California has concluded that, “putrefying waste material causes autointoxication and leads to dangerous precancerous conditions in the colon.” Dr. Kennedy connects the effects of toxicity to other ailments seemingly unrelated to the bowel. In his view, “These are problems, which because of ignorance of sick bowel as the root cause, medical doctors of

Men are from

Mars

Herbs ‘n Such, by Mimi Tagher

appy Father's Day! If you are familiar with the work of author John Gray, specifically his book Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus, you will remember that he describes one fact about males and females, “Men and Women are equal, but they are not the same.” Whether you agree or disagree with the author’s insights, human anatomy and physiology attests to this truth. Men and women are genuinely different in the structure and functioning of their bodies, and often times in the functioning of their minds and hearts.

H

Herbs for the Active Lifestyle of Men

Herbal medicine stimulates our bodies to return to health by strengthening our systems and addressing the cause of illness and malfunction. Along with the many therapeutic herbs that promote general health and well being, there are a number of natural herbs that have been shown to treat particular conditions which affect men as they go through life. The herbs below are beneficial for the active lifestyle of men at any age, as well as helpful to treat and balance conditions that affect men as they move through mid-life.

Saw Palmetto - one of the most well-know herbs for

men, it is often referred to as “the old man’s best friend.” Saw Palmetto is used as a treatment for prostrate enlargement. It has been shown to inhibit the action of 5-alpha-reductase, growth factors and inflammatory substances responsible for the common symptoms of BPH. It supports health urinary tract and prostate gland function. It is also said to combat hair loss, improve muscle strength and improve respiratory health.

Eleuthero - formerly known as Siberian ginseng, is par-

ticularly effective for athletes and can boost energy, sharpen mental concentration and help improve strength and stamina. Extensive studies conducted in China and Russia have shown that the herb can enhance immunity, increase strength, stimulate sexual function, improve sleep, help the body during times of oxygen deprivation, enhance cardiovascular function, improve overall athletic performance, and sharpen mental alertness. Probably more than any other herb studied, Eleuthe-

ro demonstrates the capacity to improve all aspects of human performance.

Tribulus - known for its ability to increase stamina, libido and sexual function for men, it is widely used by athletes and body builders because it promotes vitality and stamina, supports physical endurance, and promotes an overall feeling of well being. It can be used by both men and women to balance and support normal hormone and reproductive function. Muira Puama - referred to as “the Viagra of the Ama-

zon,” this herb is renowned for benefiting both the psychological and physical aspects of sexual function. For men it has a positive effect on erectile dysfunction and libido. It is also helpful with stress, trauma, and mild exhaustion, and for tonifying the nervous system.

Ashwagandha - also considered a natural Viagra, is said to bring the “strength of a stallion.” Often called “Indian Ginseng,” Ashwagandha improves the mind and the body’s ability to adapt to various types of stress. A wonderful nerve tonic and anti-aging herb its topical use improves circulation and helps oxygenate the skin. It is also a potent “brain herb.” Laboratory studies with mice find that Ashwagandha reconnects the circuits in the brain that have been broken by stress, including the pathways in charge of sexual arousal and ejaculation. Repairing “broken circuits” is theoretically one of the ways Ashwagandha helps restore male potency. Licorice – is a nontoxic answer for fungus such as “athlete's foot” or “jock itch.” Steep 4 teaspoons of licorice root powder in 1/2 cup of hot water for about 25 minutes. Let it cool and apply to problem areas. About the author: Mimi Tagher, LAc, LMT is nationally board certified in acupuncture, Chinese herbology and Oriental Medicine. NKY Doctor

Releases First Book Cincinnati, OH – Dr. Rajeev Kurapati, St. Elizabeth family practice doctor and author, has released his first book, Unbound Intelligence: Discover the God Within. Kurapati᾿s book examines the conditioning of the human mind as it lays out pathways to transform our conviction from believing in the transcendent to truly experiencing the force that powers all existence. “This book examines how to look at ourselves and the world around us through a clear lens, devoid of outside influences. What exactly do we want in life? How should we go about getting it? And, ultimately, what is our life’s greater purpose?” says Dr. Kurapati. Rather than providing theories or doctrines, the book expands awareness through an emphasis on personal inquiry and self-reflection. “Since childhood, I was curious about why people believe in the things they do.

And at the top of that list is the belief in God,” says Dr. Kurapati. “I’d spend countless hours trying to understand the various philosophical and spiritual traditions in an attempt to find the answers to the transcendent nature of life.” “It wasn’t until my early thirties that I experienced an epiphany that made me realize the true essence of all life. It was then that I first began to write down my various revelations. I wanted to share with others the contentment I was experiencing from this new enlightened outlook – and so the book was born,” says Dr. Kurapati. Writing a book, working as a fulltime physician and becoming a father was a delicate balancing act. “It actually encouraged me to develop an incredible work-life balance and allowed me to dive into my passion of inquiring into those existential questions,” says Dr. Kurapati. Unbound Intelligence is now avail-

The Ecstasy of Surrender is the perfect book to come along at the perfect time! I couldn’t put it down! Judith Orloff MD, a UCLA psychiatrist and beloved intuitive healer, masterfully explores how the power of letting go allows you to achieve personal and spiritual freedom. Combining mainstream medicine and beyond, Dr. Orloff blows apart old ideas about heath, aging, sex, power, beauty, and money by showing that surrender is NOT defeat—it is the missing key to true success. She defines surrender as the grace of knowing when to flow with life rather than fighting it or pushing so hard you sabotage yourself. This daring book is filled with a wealth of practical strategies to help you listen to your intuition more deeply and surrender to the wisdom of your body and the guidance of spirit—even when your ego wants to force things or when you’re overwhelmed by fear. I especially love the section on surrendering in relationships—how to surrender to love and let go of obsessive and “delusional” relationships which stand in the way of love. Also you’ll learn the art of setting boundaries with toxic people and practice the mantra: “no is a complete sentence.” The great miracle of surrender is that you can live in the passionate zone of the heart and gain deep faith in yourself and the divinity of your life. Dr. Orloff writes, ‟If you're like me - someone who wants to become everything you were meant to be and more - surrender is a doorway in,” Savor the wisdom and joy that jumps off of the pages. Return to these lessons again and again over a lifetime. Let this book be your friend and companion as you embark on the exciting adventure of surrender. 10663 Loveland-Madeira 162 •with Loveland, OH 45140 Note: A link to a recentRd., radioSuite interview Judith Orloff, 513.752.9288 • Fax: 513.722.0752 M.D. can be found on Waves of a New Age Facebook page. ads@wholelivingjournal.com

Clairaudience or ‟Clear Hearing”

Intuitive Insights, by Francine Haydon and Patricia Garry

t is 2 a.m. You are home alone and wake up to what sounds like glass breaking. You think to yourself…what’s that noise? Suddenly you hear a voice in your head saying, “Call 911!” You get up to see what’s going on. The voice, even louder now, and sounding more and more like your father who passed away when you were 11, says, “Wait! Don’t go down there. Lock the door and call for help.” The shock of hearing your father’s voice makes you listen and do as he says. You call for help, the police come and find that someone broke the window by your back door, but couldn’t get it unlocked before the police came. Danger was averted. “Thanks, Dad.” This is an example of clairaudience or clear hearing.

I

Hearing Words and Sounds from Another Realm Clairaudient messages can come from your guides, guardians and angels, as well as from family and friends who have crossed over – and even from those who have not. The messages often come as warnings or alerts and can be as simple as hearing an alarm or bell ringing. They can just as easily be words of comfort, guidance or well wishes. Spirit is using words and sounds to get your attention.

Don᾿t Ignore the Messages

Sometimes we receive these messages as we fall asleep or upon waking up – the twilight time – when the conscious mind is taking a break and the subconscious is in the forefront. If you are being too logical or analytical, you’ll probably still hear the alarm or message, but often will discount it as wishful thinking or as real physical sounds. It’s better to pay attention.

A Mother᾿s Intuition

Moms will often ‘hear’ their kids calling their names from miles away, when the children are frightened or sad. A friend was awakened in the middle of the night – wide awake, suddenly - by the voice of another friend saying ‘I forgive you’

– presumably for the alcoholic intervention that had been attempted earlier in the week. The addicted friend never gave forgiveness in reality, but it was a comfort to know her Higher Self understood the effort.

Loud or Soft the Information is Important

Sometimes the voices are identifiable – your father, your grandmother. Sometimes they are male or female, sometimes authoritarian or sympathetic, loud or whispering. Now that you know this can happen, and that it is perfectly normal, you will hopefully pay more attention to the message and be less surprised about receiving it. Spirit does not send messages, happy or not, unless we need the information.

Avoid Left Brain Interference

Too often, we use our left brains on to deal with right brained messages, and talk ourselves out of hearing the insight being offered, which is usually an easy solution to a problem that we are making way too hard. Trust your own Higher Self, take a step in the direction the message is indicating, and see what happens next. It is perfectly fine to let life be easy, and to take help when it is offered. And don’t forget to say, “Thanks!” About the authors: Francine Haydon and Patricia Garry are the authors of Right Brain/Left Brain: Use Everything You’ve Got to Create a Great Life! They facilitate workshops based on their popular book. BREATHE MORE LIFE INTO YOUR BODY noring and sleep apnea lead to low oxygen levels in the body. In turn, this leads to physical problems people don’t usually associate with sleep issues. They affect your life at home, on the job, and your relationships. Dr. Bosma helps patients who snore through a unique system of evaluation and treatment called Oral Systemic Balance. Breathe more life into your body! Call us for information or to schedule your sleep evaluation.
