Letter from the Editor

Tara L. Robinson, editor@wholelivingjournal.com

Glorious Girls

I

left off my last Letter from the Editor (MayJune ’14) with a story about how the impossible becomes possible when we hold the light for one another. “Let’s All Light One Another’s Way” was the theme of a campaign that my friend and radio co-host Judy Peace organized on my behalf to raise the money and resources needed for me to attend the Hay House Writing from Your Soul writer’s conference in Ft. Lauderdale, FL with Hay House President and CEO Reid Tracy and authors Dr. Wayne Dyer and Nancy Levin (an article by Nancy appears on page 7). I had hoped to meet Dr. Dyer in person, but never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that I would be asked to speak during the event. However, that’s exactly what happened and the experience was absolutely amazing. (My talk can be viewed on YouTube, search ‟Tara L. Robinson with Dr. Wayne Dyer.”) I’m in deep gratitude for all the love and prayers that followed me to Florida. I truly felt like I was flying on the wings of so many. And it’s that power of supporting one another that I want to speak into this issue. Author of A Woman’s Worth Marianne Williamson says, “We must take the communion of women very seriously at this time and do all we can do to support other women in reaching for the stars. There cannot be too many glorious women.” In honor of Whole Living Journal’s 11th anniversary we hosted an event titled The Power, Passion and Purpose of Women. It was a beautiful afternoon filled with inspiration, storytelling and sharing. Heidi Bright was awarded the first annual Voices of Women Award. She was honored, recognized and celebrated for “Outstanding Achievement in Personal Growth and Transformation.” There are many awards for “doing” type achievements but this award holds space for the type of work that women excel in so naturally - excavating their inner selves, improving what needs improving, and elevating their level of “being” in the world. This work is not generally valued in our society. We have become a “doing” based society and “success” and “achievement” are typically defined in monetary terms. This is because our society today is heavily weighted and influenced by masculine energies. But make no mistake, it is time for the return of the feminine and the world soul. There was a time when women were revered for being women. They were revered for their gifts in the healing arts, for their natural intuitive abilities, for their bodies’ connection with nature…for the power of their prayers. They were revered for the joy they brought to society through singing, dancing and painting, and they were revered for their ability to give birth and sustain the lives of the children that came forth. And these qualities of women were protected and held as sacred. Marianne Williamson says, “Women have more power than we know. They can experience a transcendent force of

love that embraces the whole of humanity, transforming the individual heart into the heart of the sacred. Its force simply cannot be stopped from changing the world. We call this power love, but it is grander than love. The personal heart is much too small a container for mystical love, which would shatter its walls. People actually fear becoming a channel of cosmic love, for fear of being asked to love too much and too many. True change doesn’t emerge just from action; it emerges from genuine understanding. Action that flows from deeply felt consciousness is action that can change the world.” Author of The Return of the Feminine and the World Soul Llewellyn Vaughan-Lee says, “The days of the priestesses, their temples and ceremonies are over, and because the wisdom of the feminine was not written down but transmitted orally this sacred knowledge is lost. We cannot reclaim the past, but we can witness a world without her presence. And then we can begin the work of welcoming her back, of reconnecting with the divine that is at the core of creation, and learn once again how to work with the sacred principles of life. There is much work to be done to prepare the world stage for this awakening.” One person who’s doing her part to prepare the world stage is Sera Beak, author of the brand new book Red Hot and Holy. Trust me, this book is not for the faint, or pale pink, of heart. If there is any question about the return of the Divine Feminine, Sera’s booming voice of truth annihilates any doubt. Author and woman extraordinaire Susan Grace says, “I feel it is a strong time of boundaries, voice and expression... especially for women...the feminine energy is pouring in more and more everyday and it is up to us to adjust our thermostats as appropriate for us individually...sometimes to run HOT, hot, hot and other times cold, and in between to be a lovely tepid steam on frosty icicles - balanced. No one knows how to do this in a world that is completed founded and manifested through masculine energy. Blessed be the women who are the alchemists, testing the new methodology.” Yes, blessed be the women. I’m so grateful that Judy Peace understands the importance of being a woman and holding the light for one another. I experienced first hand the beautiful miracles that can occur when feminine principles are activated and we ask “What can I give?” instead of “What can I get?” A woman supported on her journey is one of those miracles. The Secret Life of Bees author Sue Monk Kidd says, “When you’re unsure of yourself, when you start pulling back into doubt and small living, she’s the one inside saying, ‘Get up from there and live like the glorious girl you are.’” Come on Glorious Girls, remember who you are, get up and start living! Much Love and Happy Summer,

Ask for HELP

by Nancy Levin

(Excerpted from Jump… And Your Life Will Appear)

I

’m barely 5’3” tall—and that’s if my hair is puffy. Yet, the old me would have climbed up a ladder to grab something from the top shelf rather than ask for help, even if someone tall enough to reach was standing right next to me. Why was it so hard for me to ask for help? Because I thought that asking for help meant something it didn’t. I was operating on automatic pilot, and I was attached to the belief that I could somehow do it all without anyone ever seeing my weaknesses. Somewhere deep in my psyche was the belief that if they saw a weakness in me, everything would fall apart. So I never asked for help. To me, asking for help would mean I wasn’t enough. That I was a failure, imperfect. I couldn’t have been more wrong.

Mind Flip #1: When You Receive You Actually Give When you make a big change in your life—when you jump— you need support. If you’re a giver like me, you probably find it difficult to ask others to assist you. But think for a moment about how good it feels when you give to others. By not allowing someone else to give to you, you deprive them of that good feeling. So, when you receive, you’re still giving. It’s a win-win! We hear all the time how it’s better to give than to receive; how we need to be more giving; how wonderful it is to give. And it certainly is. But for the codependent among us, there is an imbalance to our giving. We offer much more than we get back, which isn’t healthy. So we need to learn to allow other people the pleasure of helping us. Asking for help allows us to honor the gifts and talents of someone else and gives that person a chance to shine, doing what they do best. So, if you still think it’s selfish to receive, realize that you’re actually not allowing someone else to have the pleasure of giving. Know that the world functions in a healthier way with a balanced, steady flow back and forth.

Mind Flip #2: The Strongest Ones Ask for Help One of the reasons I refused to ask for help for so long was that I didn’t want to appear vulnerable. I’d spent a long time thinking that “strength” meant being totally invulnerable. Never let them see me sweat. But it turns out that it takes way more courage to say “I don’t know how to do this” and “I can’t do it alone.”

It felt scary to let anyone see what I judged as my “weaknesses,” but as it turned out, it was safer than I realized. As soon as I asked for help, I discovered how many people were not only willing but happy to support me. Showing my vulnerability made me more human to others. I had projected the image of “superwoman,” and they had actually believed me! Once I let down my shield, they could identify with me and relate to me for the first time. The result was that they felt closer to me. They were all human, too, and they had all felt vulnerable. I slowly started allowing people to see all of me—both my “efficient” self and the part of me who throws up her hands and says, “I don’t know.” Feeling “help-less” wasn’t necessary anymore, though, because help was always right there. I only had to ask.

Short Story: Learning to Use ALL Your Strength I love this sweet story that perfectly illustrates what I’m sharing here: A little boy was having difficulty lifting a heavy stone. His father came along just then. Noting the boy’s challenge, he asked, “Are you using all your strength?” “Yes, I am,” the little boy said impatiently. “No, you are not,” the father answered. “I am right here just waiting, and you haven’t asked me to help you.” Note: Listen to a live interview with Nancy on Tuesday, July 8th 3:30-4:30pm on WAIF 88.3FM or www.waif883.org. Permaculture:

Beyond

Sustainability by Heidi Bright, M.Div.

M

any gardeners are moving beyond sustainability into “permaculture,” a term created by combining the words “permanent” with “agriculture.” Those who practice permaculture seek to maximize the synergistic and symbiotic relationships among all the components of a garden, including plants, soil, water, animals, and buildings. Permaculture focuses on the regenerative aspect of growing food, according to Braden Trauth, executive director of This-Land.org, Cincinnati’s permaculture education non-profit. “It’s more than just gardening,” he said. “Nature doesn’t have fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides. It just grows. How do we design our gardens after the sustainable aspect of nature?” Permaculture provides sustainable ways of growing food, medicines, fiber, and animal fodder, according to Patti Walker, board member for This-Land.org. Those who practice permaculture live more in tune with nature, understanding and enhancing its interconnections. The approach creates shelter and establishes fuel sources. It also helps build community with like-minded people. Walker said she finds the practice gratifying. It offers the mental ease of working with nature along with the potential for a harvest obtained from respecting the holistic aspects of gardening. The net result, she said, is greater than the sum of its parts. “There is a permaculture principle that we leave more than we take—with nature, this is possible and we will still have enough to care for ourselves.” For those interested in getting started with permaculture, a critical component is identifying what you want to eat or do with the food, said Trauth. Is your goal to become self-sufficient or is it a hobby? Is your project going to be seasonal or is it to have some healthy food? Answering these questions can help the gardener define the scale and plant options. The next step to consider is volunteering at local farms, talking with farmers at farmers’ markets, or joining a community-supported agriculture program, said Trauth. It’s also helpful to read, visit websites, and consider becoming certified in a permaculture design course, said Walker. One can begin with land, whether owned or leased, along with an open heart and mind. One can even start in an apartment by growing compatible plants together in the same pot. “Consider growing sprouts or micro-greens indoors,” she said. When beginning a permaculture project, start small, advised Mary Lu Lageman, farm manager at Grailville in Loveland, Ohio. “Grow more as you can. Let the garden work for you.”

8

Living W h o l e Journal

Walker encouraged gardeners to get acquainted with the soil they are using. “Learn which insects are beneficial. Use insect controls appropriately. Find out about your water flow, sunlight, wind, etcetera, on your property. Choose good seed. Add organics to soil where appropriate.” Walker suggested obtaining seeds from companies that have taken the safe-seed pledge (ufseeds.com/Safe-SeedPledge.html). Also look into edible-plant nurseries. It’s helpful to work with a team of people for creative approaches, added Lageman. “Look for others interested in sustainability.” There are many people who can steer you in a good direction, said Walker. “All kinds of obstacles will arise, but a key phrase in the philosophy of permaculture is, ‘Your problem is your solution.’” Expect challenges, along with plenty of chances to observe nature at work, she added. It helps to take the long view, observe what is happening in the garden, and get to know the interconnections created by permaculture. Chickens fit well in a permaculture system because they can eat kitchen scraps and give eggs, Lageman said. They also contribute organic matter and meat and help with insect control, added Walker. Learn your local regulations, however, because many places do not allow roosters. Animals will require timely care. This can work if there are friends or family who can assist, said Lageman. One will not be successful at permaculture all at once, said Lageman. Take it one step at a time, using small and slow solutions. On the whole, said Walker, permaculture is an ongoing pursuit, and it is forgiving. “You will most likely have more food than you had before, even with the mistakes.” Local organizations: Gorman Heritage Farm (www.gormanfarm.org), Civic Garden Center (www.civicgardencenter.org), and Grailville (www.grailville.org). Time to

Transition by Servet Hasan

W

ho amongst us has not been touched by a loss? It is the one experience that binds all human beings together. Whether it’s a major loss, such as a terminal illness, loss of a loved one, a painful divorce, or loss of income, or whether it’s a loss such as having to relocate to another city, there will always be someone who has gone through whatever change we are going through. Change happens and it happens to each and every one of us, regardless of our background, our income, or religion.

Change is the Door to Your Soul We move from place to place by going through a series of betweens: between a door to an exit, from the indoors to the outdoors…and from the changing conditions of our outside world to the inside of our souls.

Hearing the Still, Small Voice These times may be trying, but what is often referred to as a “dark night of the soul” doesn’t have to be filled with pain and regret. It is during these moments when we feel grief, doubt, anxiety, depression and confusion that we may be most vulnerable, yet are also more open to hearing that small still voice inside. We come here to learn, grow, and evolve. And as we wait upon the grace of the Universe to teach us these lessons, and it always will, we shift in consciousness and find ourselves being transformed.

Is It the End, or a Beginning? A central metaphor of the spiritual life is death and resurrection, whether it’s large or small. You can look upon the challenge at hand as an end, or as a beginning. But either way to get through it you will have to die to who you used to be and become instead someone who is made anew. This is the gift that awaits you: the chance to become who you are truly capable of being. That is the miracle.

Your Own Sacred Sanctuary So, if you are going through a transition of any kind, pause and take a deep breath. Be conscious of the moment’s importance and realize that you are moving from your involvement with the outside world into the space of your own sacred sanctuary. Instead of becoming immersed in the unending stream of life’s challenges, venture inward and become aware of the gifts that accompany each one.

Being Blessed with Answers As life travelers we will sometimes be on the high road and sometimes find ourselves on the low road, often filled with rocky terrain. Ours is not to wonder why, but to discover that along this journey we are also being blessed with answers that will help us become more of who we truly are. As a result we become better people, not only to ourselves, but to everyone around us. So, change, although not easy, is necessary.

HUman Slavery and

Bondage

of the

Human Mind

by Dr. Ericha Scott can remember the first time I heard about human bondage. It was in 1987 when I was working as a new counselor in Park Cities near Highland Park, a Dallas community I call “The Malibu of Texas.” An extremely bright, middle aged client, with a successful career as a lawyer, began weeping in a hysterical panic. Shaking and covering her face, she said in a child᾿s voice, “And, and, and...he put a loaded gun in my vagina and said he would kill me if I screamed or told anyone.” At that moment the oppressed scream from 45 years earlier emerged with so much childlike angst I had to concentrate in order to suppress the urge to burst into tears along with her. A few months before, Renee Fredrickson, PhD, the coowner of the counseling center where I worked, had warned me that I would hear about bondage. As she spoke, my mind drifted to consensual adult pseudo-sadomasochism. Renee, sensing that I had missed the point, looked me in the eye and said, “Of children.” I swallowed and said quietly, “Oh.” Even then I truly had no idea what she meant. How can it be that one of the most wealthy, prestigious, “proper” Christian neighborhoods in the world harbors this kind of criminal activity outside our sight and awareness? And what does bondage mean when it involves the mind, not just the body? In the book Incest-Related Syndromes of Adult Psychotherapy Dr. Richard Kluft reveals a conversation he had while he was a young soldier stationed in Italy with a man in a bar who revealed to Richard that he was a pimp. The pimp volunteered, in a braggart sort of way, that the best prostitutes, like the two sitting with him, had been initiated to the world of sex by their fathers. Yes, this is very shocking, but in fact, research supports the pimp’s comment. The large majority of prostitutes, as many as 80%, were sexually abused as young children, not necessarily by their fathers, but by a much older and often trusted person. Even without physical restraints, the mental bondage of early childhood sexual abuse enslaves the mind. Many prostitutes acknowledge that the early abuse has restricted their life choices but they do not feel as if they have alternative options to prostitution due to such correlational problems as lack of education, self-esteem, early pregnancy, poverty or addiction. I have heard prostitutes, a few were my clients, vehemently deny that prostitution as a career choice was associated with their early childhood abuse. Once, a very sophisticated call girl, when disclosing her profession for the first time, explained to me, insisted really, that she was in charge, not the Johns. While she was speaking, I could not help but notice the lack of congruence between her words and dress. She wore

I

Living W h o l e Journal

Artwork by Dr. Ericha Scott ‟Liberation from Bondage” tiny pink plastic little girl barrettes in her hair, black patent Mary Jane shoes that pointed inward as she fidgeted and a plunging and very revealing buxom decolletage. The chains of her early trauma seemed to have kept her mind stuck in childhood even though her body was aging. If this is so, then how is prostitution a choice? The long-term effects of early childhood sexual abuse, which happens long before the body, mind, and hormones are ready to be sexual, limits an adults’ capacity for choice and undermines escape as if time has warped and stood still at age five. This is why crimes against children can happen and adults can become victims of human slavery and we do not see it. The prison bars of the mind are invisible, but more powerful than steel. According to the Director of Homeland Security in Ventura County California (2013), San Diego now has the worst human slavery problem of any city in the world. In the United States, the Human Slavery problem is the second fastest growing illegal industry in our country. It is easy to dismiss this statistic as an issue of children and women from the other side of the US border, but in fact about 70 percent of the victims were born in the United States. According to the Global Slavery Index there are 29.8 million people enslaved in some form of bondage around the world. Government statistics are clear that victims come from all socio-economic groups, so education, wealth, and privilege do not always provide the protection we wish for our children. If one person is enslaved then, morally and spiritually, none of us are free. The

Recover y

Connection Yoga, Ayurveda

and the

12 Steps

by Stacy Lynn

Y

oga is an ancient healing practice that has gained popularity in the west over the last few decades. People are drawn to yoga for many reasons. As a yoga teacher and therapist, I have worked with people who decide to practice yoga to increase flexibility or strength, to work on breathing or relaxation, or to increase energy and vitality. All who come to yoga seem to share one thing: the desire to end their suffering. Physical pain and emotional turmoil cause suffering in our lives, and people find relief through practicing yoga. However, suffering the pain of addiction is a taboo topic in society, leaving people with few resources to bring healing into their lives. Utilizing yoga to support those with addictions has proven to be quite successful. Yoga of Recovery is a program designed specifically to provide practical tools to relieve the suffering we all experience from our addictive tendencies, thoughts, and behaviors.

The Tools of Yoga, Ayurveda and the 12-Steps From alcohol to caffeine and compulsive exercise to selfdestructive depressive behaviors, everyone suffers from addiction. Eating, shopping, perfectionism, using technology, risk-taking and worrying are all addictive behaviors that cause suffering. Our often hectic and stressful lifestyles can leave us feeling disconnected from everything and everyone around us, and we look for distractions from these feelings of emptiness and separation. We have a hunger and thirst for true fulfillment, but it cannot be filled from the outside. Combining the wisdom and tools found in Yoga (the science of the mind) and Ayurveda (the science of life and balance) with the simple wisdom of traditional 12-step programs, Yoga of Recovery provides a comprehensive system to relieve suffering caused by addiction. It is a method for treating addiction on a spiritual basis. When we look outside ourselves to find happiness and fulfillment, we are forgetting that our true nature is Divine. We are already whole; we don’t need anything to complete us. Yoga of Recovery teaches that the real dis-ease of addiction is due to the separation from our Spirit or Higher Power. This happens when we over-identify with our minds and bodies. We crave sensory pleasures and overindulge to satisfy the desires of the physical being.

12

Living W h o l e Journal

Revitalizing Body Prevents Addictive Behaviors Traditional 12-step programs suggest that addiction is a spiritual malady but give little advice on how to heal on a physical level. Incorporating the various types of yoga, such as Karma, Bhakti, Jnana and Raja Yoga with the physical postures (asana) and breathing (pranayama), we can begin to experience a sense of wholeness and connection to our Higher Power. Adding in Ayurvedic techniques such as aromatherapy, color and sound therapy, body treatments and herbal remedies, we can bring balance to enhance our recovery and healing. Healing and purifying the body and mind includes diet and lifestyle adjustments to work toward a harmonious life. Exercise, breathing, relaxation, diet, positive thinking, and meditation techniques are all important pieces in the recovery process. Once the body’s constitution (or dosha) is determined, we can identify our first reaction to stress, and we can learn daily and seasonal routines to bring balance to the mind and body based on our specific tendencies and vulnerabilities. Revitalizing the body’s systems through these methods provides a strong foundation to face challenges and stresses occurring in daily life while preventing participation in old, addictive behaviors.

Self-Destruction to Self-Realization Sobriety is described as a “daily reprieve contingent on the maintenance of our spiritual condition” in recovery programs. When we weave together the ancient wisdom of Yoga and Ayurveda with the practical tools of the 12-steps, we can begin to end our suffering and find the path from self-destruction to self-realization: living happy, joyous and free--one day at a time!

Dementia and Olive Oil by Gloria Charlier MA, BSN Recently I attended a symposium on aging, dementia and Alzheimerážżs disease. There were a number of well known speakers in attendance and it really got me thinking about various issues around brain health. A long time ago when I was a student nurse I witnessed the ravages of Korsakoffážżs syndrome. It was considered a condition of alcoholics that had a negative effect on the brain and memory, particularly recent memory. The condition was discovered to be caused by a Thiamine deficiency, (Vitamin B1) and is not limited to people who over use alcohol, it is a deficiency of nutrition. Our bodies do not make Thiamine therefore we have to take it in through our food. During the symposium one of the

speakers talked about the biology of the brain. One interesting fact is that the brain is approximately 60% fat. This is why essential fatty acids are so important to brain health. In recent clinical journals there is evidence that using Extra Virgin Olive Oil may help in the prevention of dementia. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/ pubmed/20329590 Our health care system has become so focused on developing pills for everything that we are wise to take good care of ourselves. Adding some olive oil to our diets is an easy way to begin. It is readily available at all grocery stores and easy to substitute in recipes and cooking. Next time you visit your local Kroger or other favorite grocer look for Extra Vir-

gin Olive Oil. Your brain will thank you! About the author: Gloria Charlier MA, BSN is a certified creative grief coach, wellness coach, aromatherapist and hypnotherapist with a passion for helping people. You can visit her website at www.gloriacharlier.com.

The

Masters Among Us

by Jennifer Annenberg

T

here once was a monastery of elderly monks who received a mysterious visitor in the dead of night. This visitor, after having stayed for several days, said, “One of you is a Master.” He then departed. The air filled with a wave of wonder, excitment and awe. “Could it be me?” they wondered, “Could it be him?” Suddenly the monks started treating each other with a new sense of reverence, compassion and respect that they had not given each other in the past. Ultimately, not one monk was the Master, they all were. For they themselves became the Master that they saw the other monks to be.

A Sacred Assignment What if you were told that you would come face to face with a Master today, but that you would not know this person by the clothes they wore or the things they did (whether appropriate or not)? Would your actions change? Would the things you said or think be of a different caliber? Would you leave your negativity behind, instead concentrating on the positive areas of your life? Most importantly, is it possible that all of a sudden you would develop the capability to see through others’ exteriors that day looking only through eyes of reverence, compassion and forgiveness…thereby becoming the very Master for whom you were looking?

came into contact with them as a messenger from beyond. God. In fact, the standard greeting there is “Namaste.” The very meaning of which is, “I bow to you,” which could be loosely translated as, “The Master in me sees the Master in you.”

Now Let᾿s Get Real With It But how do we activate this principle in our daily lives? By seeing the Master in everyone, including mother-in-laws, ex-husbands, difficult neighbors, and complaining customers. They can’t be excluded. All have been sent from beyond. The exterior world is a reflection of our interior condition. As we correct our perceptions of those who are ‘flawed’ our perception of ourselves will adjust accordingly. Gaining your Mastership is simply acknowledging your royal heritage, and reminding others of their own. By seeing the Master in others, you are seeing the Master in yourself.

The Master is You So if I were expecting to see the Master today among the people I meet, I would be training myself to see only the highest expression of creation, the truest and the most real essence of another. And by doing that I AM becoming the Master. Since you can only see that which you possess in yourself…The Master you met today is You.

We are ALL Masters I wonder why we need someone to remind us that we are all Masters. We are all made from the same stardust, whether we were born here or across the globe. I was struck by a phrase learned recently on my travels to India where they say, “Guests are God.” That pretty much sums it up. Time and time again my friends in India would remind me that they felt it was important to treat anyone that

Gemagination “If you can use a pair of scissors, you can become a jeweler of the heart, mind, and spirit.” That’s the way intuitive artist and creative consultant, Pic Michel, describes making Gems at The HeartStudio on Montgomery Road, in Kennedy Heights. Gems is a creative experience combining pictures and words chosen from the HeartStudio collection to make a meaningful, frameable work of art. Michel designed Gems to bring meaningful memories to special events such as showers for weddings or newborns, team-building and more. The finished collages can be made into a deck of commemorative cards to provide lasting memories and daily inspiration. “Making a Gem is a wonderful way to contemplate and set intention.” Michel says, “We provide everything you need to make the whole experience special.” A deck of cards from your Gems session can be ordered for each participant or given to a special person in the group. “Everyone goes home with a meaning, frame able work of art and an unusual, fun and meaningful experience.” For those who don’t have an event coming up, The HeartStudio offers open sessions. Make Mine (Whole) Milk! Dairy products provide many health benefits, including helping to build strong bones, reducing blood pressure, and improving the quality of our sleep. Milk fat contains a wide array of different types of fats, which vary somewhat based on the genetics of the source animal and what it was fed. Generally, about two-thirds of the fat in milk is saturated fat, and the rest is primarily the very healthful omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids. The American Dairy industry and USDA have long recommended drinking three cups of

low-fat milk a day. Unfortunately, new evidence shows that when the cream is skimmed off, so are many of milk’s health benefits. New research has actually shown that children who drink regular, whole milk have a reduced risk of obesity, perhaps because the milk alleviates hunger and leads to a more sated feeling. The saturated fats in milk do not seem to adversely affect cholesterol patterns and actually appear to raise the HDL, or beneficial cholesterol. Other research has suggested that milk fat may lead to

other health benefits, such as reduction in the risk of colon cancer and improved fertility. Milk fat also stores the vital fat-soluble vitamins, A, D, E and K. Pasture-fed cows produce milk with more healthful ratios of omega 3 to 6, but these products are not easily found and a sweet picture of a cow in a grassy meadow on the front of the carton does not mean that the cows that produced the milk actually ever saw a pasture. This new evidence, however, is reassuring for those of us who enjoy the creamy, richness of whole milk.

The World’s Go-To Fruit

Option#2

Bananas are among the most widely consumed foods in the world, and are the most popular fruit in the United States. (It used to be apples here, but bananas inched past them since about 2000.) While bananas have a higher caloric density than most other fruits and vegetables – and therefore might seem like something to avoid if you need to watch your weight – the pluses of this food so outweigh this little drawback that you really should keep bananas in your diet. The most well-known nutrient in the banana is potassium, of which it is a notably rich source. That mineral protects against heart disease with its highly beneficial effect on blood pressure, and also has mood-boosting properties to fight depression. Their fiber content helps with digestion, warding off heartburn and constipation. An apple a day is a swell piece of advice – we try to eat plenty of them, especially in the peak apple season (Fall – Winter). Adding a banana-a-day to your regimen is a smart move, too.

Everyday Zen by Seleka Behrs

Z

en is the art of vitalizing the true self in daily life. Everyone can lead their own version of a Zen life. The word Zen derives from Dhyana, meaning, “to think.” This means you must become consciously aware of your situation in order to vitalize, or bring to life, your true self. Recognize the actions, choices, and internal dialogues that are possible. Consider these options in order to choose the best possible course you can take toward your goals.

Too Busy to be Zen? You might say, “It is too hard to think about every single choice I have in a day. I’m too busy to be Zen.” You are attentively engaged in work or a pastime. You are like millions of Americans who wrap your idea of self into how many tasks you can accomplish before you eat, rest, shower, and repeat another day of endless tasks. Zen does not ask you to stop your cycle. Zen asks you to consider.

It᾿s All About Thinking and Choices

Everyone Can Live Their Own Version of Zen Everyone can lead their own version of a Zen life. Look within for answers to how you feel about your current habits. Challenge yourself to improve the experience of simple daily tasks. You realize your true self as you become consciously aware of your actions and their affects. You will find your everyday Zen when your actions align with truth and positive benefits for all. About the author: Seleka Behrs, of Behrs Necessities Wellness Studio, holds a pre-medical degree and has advanced certifications in Life Coaching and Clinical Hypnotherapy. She is trained in Reiki, toe reading, yoga, urban farming, chakra balancing, polarity therapy, aromatherapy, flower essences, Ayurveda, and holistic nutrition. She encourages her clients to experience spiritual growth through self-awareness, healthy choices, and the offering of compassion to themselves and others. www.behrsnecessities.com

Do you make the best possible decisions you can with the knowledge you have? Do you choose to research the source of the food you eat, the impact of the car you drive, the purpose of the television programs you watch, or how you can improve your health? How often do you find yourself speeding through the day, taking no time to reflect upon how your decisions and actions affect your family, yourself, or your community?

Discover Yourself Make an investment of your time into discovering yourself. Ask questions and pay attention to the internal answers. Start simple by picking one easy, mindless, tedious task you do every day. You can choose any action. Analyze it and pay attention to the way you feel when you do it. Do you notice a way you can improve how it affects your health, safety, or wellbeing? If you do not notice anything, expand your attention to how it affects your family, how it affects your community, and how it affects our world. Each level of consideration offers a new perspective and connection.

Claiming the Wildman by Gary Matthews I have been working with men in an informal monthly men’s group for about 20 years. We started this group for various personal and spiritual reasons. One of the main reasons was our longing to connect with nature and our instinctual selves. I had been told that my instincts were bad and that they would cause trouble. After all these years, I’ve come to embrace the instinctual nature of men as good. The wildness in a man can be misunderstood as destructive or self-centered. But for me, the wildness within me is the part that is dedicated to the natural order of things. This wildness is what makes the trees grow, the geese to come home to their nest every year, the rain to fall, and indeed, the earth to turn on her axis. My wildness is the part of me that belongs here on the planet. It is the indigenous part. It is not alien to the sacred cycles of birth, death and rebirth. It is not ashamed. It intends no harm. My wildness longs for expression. It can easily feel suppressed and repressed. I do not wish to deny my wild nature. I do not want to be afraid of it either. The urges and instincts that motivate wildness only become dangerous when they are feared or suppressed. In their full expression, they are life giving and peaceful. For me, there’s no desire to conquer or possess, only to be free. My wildness wants freedom. My

wildness wants pleasure. My wildness wants to breathe in life fully and give life fully. Claiming the Wildman is a weekend of elemental initiations for men to renew, or discover for the first time, the aliveness of the Wildman in body, spirit and mind. August 8-10, 2014 at the Mountain Light Sanctuary, Asheville, NC. Initiations include, Air Journey (Shamanic Breathwork), Re-Sculpting our Earth Origin, Firewalk and Waterfall Purification. The

Best

Travel Companions: Donážżt Leave Home Without Them Herbs ‘n Such, by Mimi Tagher

A

re you planning to travel this summer? Whether it be for business or pleasure, it is wise to do what you can to insure the trip will be enjoyed in good health. Travelers are often subject to a wide range of physical, mental and emotional stressors. Last minute deadlines and errands can leave one feeling stressed and exhausted. Add that to a long plane, train, bus or car ride, and exposure to a wide range of contagious diseases and toxins, and travelers often arrive at their destinations feeling worse than before they left home.

Two Travel Musts: Acidophilus and Adaptogens To get the most out of your trip, start preparing at least a week or two before leaving. Take an acidophilus supplement to help build up friendly intestinal flora. This will boost your immune system and help to prevent the common travel ailments of diarrhea and/or constipation. Also begin taking an adaptogenic herb. Adaptogens are agents that help the body cope with stress, and enhance physical and mental health and endurance. They are used by travelers to improve defenses, and increase resistance to a broad spectrum of harmful physical, chemical and biological stressors. Stay hydrated by drinking lots of water, and less coffee, tea, alcohol and caffeine. Eat a well balanced diet, and get plenty of rest before you leave. Below are my favorite travel companions. They can address most stress and travel related ills....I never leave home without them!

Holy Basil (Tulsi) - often considered the most potent medicinal herb in India, and one of the best adaptogenic herbs for both treatment and prevention. It has a unique combination of anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial and other actions that combine to help the body and mind cope with a wide range of physical, emotional, chemical and infectious stresses. It particularly addresses the many issues of air travel such as infection, fatigue, thrombosis, anxiety, jet lag, oxygen reduction, radiation, industrial chemicals, and poor sleep. 20

Living W h o l e Journal

Ginseng - a great adaptogenic herb and all around tonic. It helps the body acclimate to different environments, climate changes, altitudes, jet lag and stress. Ginger - helpful for all digestive issues and also for motion sickness.

Peppermint - very helpful for indigestion, stomach pain, cramps, and motion sickness. It will also freshen up a stale smelling hotel room, enliven a bath, counteract the smells on an airplane, curb nausea, and encourage deep breathing.

Tiger balm - great for sore muscles if you are planning an active trip. It also works well for headaches if rubbed on the temples.

Melatonin - helps with sleep, time change, and jet lag. Yin qiao - a chinese herbal formula that helps prevent

coughs, colds, flu and illness when taken at the first sign of symptoms.

Congaplex - an immune booster that helps ward off illness. Take before and during a trip and double or triple the dose at the first sign of any illness.

Clairsentience or

‟Clear Feeling” Intuitive Insights, by Francine Haydon and Patricia Garry

ut instinct…good people reader…‟I could just feel that he was a good person”… These are all indicative of people using their psychic sense of clairsentience or “clear feeling.” Clairsentients receive psychic messages as felt energy or a physical sensation – often distinguished as positive or negative, like a “yes” or “no” – to information about a person or situation. Something “feels” right or wrong. When you pay attention to these messages, they can be very helpful, especially when working with co-workers on a project, in a politically tense and sensitive negotiation, or determining if you are walking into a dangerous situation. However, the important thing is to value these feelings and not overrule them with logic. If you are walking in a vacant parking garage late at night and suddenly start to feel very uneasy – heed that feeling! Stop, look around. If possible, turn and go another way to get to your car or ask a co-worker to walk with you.

G

Third Chakra Power: Stomach as Psychic Receptor Clairsentient messages can be very strong. The psychic receptor area for these messages is the solar plexus or third chakra, which is the largest energy vortex in the body. It is a huge target – extending all the way across the body from the naval up to the diaphragm. If you meet a negative person, you may actually feel sick to your stomach. Years ago, I shook hands with someone I was introduced to in a business meeting and immediately felt like I had been sucker punched. I even looked down to see if he’d hit me. He had not, but I became aware that we had very different ways of handling things.

Arms and Feet are Intuitive Too One of the most amazing things about the spiritual life is the variety of gifts that each of us has. Each of us is unique and expresses her/his gifts uniquely. For instance, one friend, be-

fore she became aware of and open to her intuition, would receive a painful jab in her upper right arm. It felt like a hot nail. Once, it was so sudden and sharp that she had to pull her car over and stop. Thus she was not involved in the auto accident that happened seconds later. This painful feeling has decreased markedly since she is now more receptive to intuitive messages and understands how to listen to her body. Another woman we know has a foot that “buzzes” to get her attention.

Don᾿t Ignore Your Body᾿s Messages Many of us, particularly women, are very prone to overriding these messages. When we receive a strong and negative feeling from or about someone, we remember how our mothers always told us to be nice, not mean. And so we talk ourselves into smiling when we really want to run away. Learning to trust this inner physical wisdom is important. While smiling, make your excuses about being late for an appointment, turn away and keep moving. With a little practice, the information our bodies receive gets more clear and easier to understand – which makes it easier to accept and trust. Your body is a terrific conduit for spiritual messages. So keep listening, practicing and trusting. Heidi Bright received the first Voices of Women Award for outstanding achievement in personal growth and transformation from Whole Living Journal magazine. Bright was honored on May 16, 2014 during WLJ’s 11th anniversary event, “The Power, Passion, and Purpose of Women,” at Elemental Om in Montgomery. Tara L. Robinson, editor and publisher of WLJ, created the award to honor women in the Cincinnati community. “Now, more than ever, it's crucial for every woman to be honest about her power... her passion...her purpose...and begin walking in that truth,” she said. “For as she draws closer to her own center, and increases the density of that place, others will be drawn by the gravitational pull to join her in that sacred space within a woman᾿s heart which contains the DNA to heal everything.” Robinson selected Bright because of her story of transformational healing from end-stage cancer. Bright has turned what she learned from her cancer journey into a book of inspirational readings that will be traditionally published later this year by Sunstone Press. Thriver Soup: A Feast for Living Consciously During the Cancer Journey includes entries that provide a variety of holistic strategies for cushioning chemotherapy and softening surgery while empowering readers to grow in consciousness. Bright currently blogs about cancer at www.heidibright.com/blog. Robinson said, “Heidi Bright is one of the bravest women I know. From the moment she received her diagnosis of a rare, aggressive, terminal cancer with an extremely low survival rate, she became determined not to die. She left no stone unturned in her search for anything that would restore her health and vitality. In her upcoming book, she spares nothing in equipping readers with everything they need to know if they, or loved ones, are on the cancer journey. A cancer diagnosis is not the time to lose hope...it’s the time to decide to thrive. That’s what Heidi did and she transformed not only her body, but her inner and outer life as well. In this book, she explains in detail how you can do the same. I highly recommend Thriver Soup.” Women are powerhouses, Robinson added. “Our potential, our cosmic function, has only begun to be understood. In our natural state we are nurturers and givers of life. The power of our prayers cannot be overestimated. And there cannot be too many glorious women.”

BREATHE MORE LIFE INTO YOUR BODY noring and sleep apnea lead to low oxygen levels in the body. In turn, this leads to physical problems people don’t usually associate with sleep issues. They affect your life at home, on the job, and your relationships. Dr. Bosma helps patients who snore through a unique system of evaluation and treatment called Oral Systemic Balance. Breathe more life into your body! Call us for information or to schedule your sleep evaluation.
