Letter from the Editor

Tara L. Robinson, editor@wholelivingjournal.com

Paying it Forward

W

e celebrated Whole Living Journal’s 10th anniversary in May. It was wonderful to connect with the community and hear how WLJ has positively impacted so many lives. Stories were shared of inspiration gleaned through the pages over the years, friendships that have developed as a result of attending events promoted in our calendar, health issues that improved with the support of practitioners who advertise with us...the list goes on and on. Michelle Christine Garza kicked off the evening with soulful music that created a sacred space, and she even led a spontaneous group sing of “Row, Row, Row Your Boat,” complete with an in-depth explanation of the spiritual significance of the lyrics. Kathryn Martin Ossege, the birth-mother and founder of WLJ, took the stage next and reminisced about how it all began. She shared how she had originally only planned to publish two issues to test the waters and see what the interest level was in the community for a local holistic magazine. To her surprise the response was astounding. It was clear WLJ was meant to be. And 10 years later here we are, still standing and going strong. Thank you Kathryn for your powerful vision, and most of all for your dedication and courage to step into it; to breathe life into it. I know the long hours it takes to pull off publishing each issue so it is not without great respect that I thank you. Namaste. I told the “rest of the story” about how I came to be the new owner and editor exactly half way through the process five years ago and introduced the staff and supporters which have made it all possible. Heidi Bright Parales, who has been a part of the WLJ

family since the very beginning, silenced the audience with a moving account of her battle with cancer and her journey of healing as a result of the support of people she connected with through WLJ. We’re so glad you are well Heidi! Thank you for your years of loyal service to WLJ and to the community. Judy Peace reminded us that, just like the movie It’s a Wonderful Life illustrates, we all are significant. If any of us were to be popped out of history as if we never existed, countless lives would be affected. She drew the parallel of the significance of the role of WLJ in the community and the lives that have been changed for the good as an effect of us being here. Thank you Judy for that beautiful reminder and tribute. So here we are, 10 years strong and grateful for all the people who have contributed to our success. If you are a reader who has found inspiration, encouragment, or resources through our pages and are looking for a way to “pay it forward” might I suggest you consider starting with our advertisers. It wouldn’t be possible for us to publish each issue without their support. Let them know you found them in WLJ and that you appreciate them keeping us alive in the community. If you’re a business owner, why not consider advertising with us too? It’s been a love fest! And I hope it never ends. Celebrating this milestone has been fun and transformational. One last thank you to New Thought Unity Center for hosting the event. And a big congratulations to Star Staubach for winning the drawing for a free ad for a year! Happy summer days to all,

Did you know?... Anne Steffen-Russo is our longest running advertiser and has never missed an issue! Way to go Anne! WholeCare donates space for our special events and workshops. Thank you Dr. Armstrong and WholeCare! The staff at Synergy helps to distribute WLJ in NKY. Phew! What would we do without you Synergy? Dr. Bosma of Montgomery Dental has been our biggest advertising supporter for the past 5 years. Thank you Dr. Bosma!

Work

Smarter Not Harder: A Smarter Approach to Health

Health tips from Dr. Sachin Patel, Functional and Lifestyle Medicine Provider, author and speaker

s summer approaches, many of you are making resolutions to improve your personal health. My suggestion is to take a smarter approach that is sure to produce better results. As a Functional and Lifestyle Medicine Provider, my primary goal is to discover and eliminate the root cause of chronic health issues. Using this unique approach, I am able to produce remarkable results for my patients suffering from conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, hormone imbalances, fatigue, depression, autoimmune diseases and countless others. The right approach will produce dramatic results in a short period of time. By channeling your energy and efforts in the right direction you will achieve extraordinary results. Getting better at doing the wrong things just leads to further disappointment. This summer work smarter, not harder.

1. You ARE NOT what you eat. The food we eat today has been oversimplified and adulterated for the sake of making it cheaper and faster to produce. Food is much more than calories on a food label. What we eat has important implications with respect to our digestive, immune, circulatory, nervous and metabolic systems. Food and water provide all the building blocks for healthy cell function. The food we eat relies on a healthy functioning digestive system, the right choices and proper waste elimination. The reality is, you are what you eat, digest and absorb, therefore it is critical to eat the right foods. For hundreds of healthy recipes go to www.thelivingproofdiet. com.

Plan to succeed

2. You don’t have a headache because you have an Advil® deficiency. When you read this statement, it sounds a very silly. Unfortunately, many of us settle for quick fixes to whatever hurts, instead of tackling the real problem. I despise pain and suffering just as much as anyone else. I do, however, ask a different set of questions. I ask WHY the problem is occurring in the first place and how I can support the body instead of inhibiting it. Many symptoms people experience are caused by deeper rooted conditions that require more attention, not just a bandage.

About the author: Dr. Patel is a Functional and Lifestyle Medicine practitioner, author and speaker. He takes a highly personalized approach to prevent the development of chronic disease and improve the health of his patients using customized laboratory testing combined with personalized lifestyle interventions. food, too much or too little stress is not a good thing. When we talk about stress at our seminars, I like my audience to understand that the body has a magnificent stress response. It works perfectly and predictably, every time. What people don’t understand is that this “alarm” system was designed to activate for only a few minutes per day, not 40 hours per week! Stress has been linked to virtually every chronic disease. Stress comes in three forms; chemical, physical and emotional. Our goal is to help patients identify the types of stress they are experiencing and provide a support system and strategy for reducing it. These strategies may include learning to say no, meditation, time management techniques and nutritional support products based on needs and several other avenues.

Identifying the root cause of your health concerns and addressing these core issues will produce superior long-term results. Working harder is not the answer, it’s time to take a smarter approach to your health. Use these three strategies to start. With the proper plan in place, your goals will become much easier to accomplish.

Lost My Way by Ester Nicholson

N

eglected at home, a victim

of emotional abuse by her mother, Ester Nicholson, renowned vocalist for Bette Midler and Rod Stewart, gave birth to a daughter while still in her middle teens and was shortly thereafter introduced to snorting cocaine. Lost in years of addiction, she neglected her own child, indulged in destructive relationships, raged at the world, heaped selfabuse and pain on herself, lost job after job and was nearly homeless. Even her early AA meetings were merely another way to dress up and attract men. But slowly the concepts seeped in, and she began the journey to recovery. Yet, she knew she was still fragile and in danger of slipping…until she realized the Spirit Within…and achieved her Soul Recovery. Ester uses her own astonishing story as the core of her powerful new book Soul Recovery—12 Keys to Healing Addiction (Hay House/Agape Media). Soul Recovery is the process Ester developed to heal herself of cocaine addiction–unifying the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous with a spiritual pathway. The following excerpt was taken from her book. More information can be found at www.soulrecovery.org : I could’ve just moved my bed into an AA meeting. I was fighting for my life, and my self-worth was non-existent. From where I stand today, I know that self-worth is a byproduct of integrity, clarity, balance, harmony and peace. Well, folks, that just wasn’t happening in my mental house. I

wasn’t drinking and using drugs, but my addictive patterns were still my master. If it wasn’t a man, it was food; if it wasn’t food, it was seeking approval, or addiction to the negative mental chatter in my head. Sometimes I had all of my obsessions going on at the same time. Boy, was I a mess. At this particular moment in my life, I was obsessed with Mark—my boyfriend at the time. An obsession is a thought that occupies the mind constantly. So obviously there was no room in my already cluttered mind for my daughter. Just when I thought,

“I could’ve just moved my bed into an AA meeting... Boy, was I a mess.” “Oh goody, I’m sober, I have a job and my own apartment, I can really focus on impressing Mark and make him love me,” my sister announced that she was sending my daughter back home to live with me. I argued with her and begged for more time. She almost had to threaten me into taking her back. Here I was, two years sober and still saying, “I’m not ready to be a mother yet.” But ready or not, my daughter was coming home. Initially, I was happy to see her. The love I felt for her was real, but selfishness and selfcenteredness were just as powerful. How was I going to see Mark whenever I wanted to? I only had one bedroom. How would I sleep with him if my daughter was home? My poor little girl thought she was going to be the center of my world when she came home—which was her rightful place. I would catch her looking at me out of the corner of my eye, and I could see such hunger and longing for my attention on her face. I was angry with her for making me feel that

www.WholeLivingJournal.com

awful guilt in the pit of my gut. I knew I was an awful mother, but felt as powerless against the urge to chase after Mark as I had when I was chasing the next hit of cocaine. I found out later in my recovery he was just the misdirected focus of a wounded soul. Bill Wilson states, “The alcoholic cannot differentiate the true from the false.” Another word that can be used for “alcoholic mind” is an unconscious, obsessed mind—wounded, fearful, and yes, “insane.” The definition of insanity is “a complete lack of reason or foresight,” or “doing the same thing again and again, expecting different results.” Lack of perspective and emotional balance doesn’t completely go away when you became sober, or even after practicing the 12 Steps. Well, I was a little miffed at that. I thought that by getting sober, I would become a little like Mother Theresa, full of kindness and serenity. I thought all of my problems would go away. Addiction is like a hypnotic spell, with its own rules, patterns and obsessions. The spell can be broken by practicing spiritual principles of meditation, forgiveness, making amends, and inner-child healing diligently and consistently. Through the committed practice to these healing tools, we have the opportunity to awaken to life’s truth—which is love, peace, balance and well-being. When that happens, we return to our natural state of wholeness and are restored to sanity. (We) were created out of, and in the image of wholeness, magnificence, love, balance and order. (We) have simply forgotten this truth through years of practicing the opposite. It’s now time to reawaken to (our) wholeness as a perfect expression of Life. Tara L. Robinson will interview Ester on Tuesday, August 13th, 3:30-4:30pm, on Waves of a New Age at WAIF 88.3FM or www.waif883.org

Unprecedented

Cancer Conference at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital

On May 2-4, 2013, over 90 of the world’s leading cancer experts, researchers and foundations gathered for the second “homerun cure” pediatric brain cancer symposium in the U.S.. A collective effort four years in the making, the DIPG Collaborative Symposium convened at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center with over 90 attendees from five countries worldwide in pursuit of new strategies in pediatric brain cancer research, a cause which many experts believe will result in new opportunities for cures to all types of cancer, both adult and pediatric. Together, nearly $1.1 million was pledged for new research through a collaborative network in the U.S., Europe, Canada and Australia. The revolutionary collaborative meeting showcased both the best and most innovative cancer research proposed worldwide and featured groundbreaking findings. “This represents our very best chance of advancing cancer research decades into the future by capturing the homerun spirit that originally cured so many cancers over 50 years ago. Too often,

we tend to fight cancer as individual diseases, ignoring both the commonalities and the very experts that see possibilities and cure strategies that can affect all cancers, and thereby affect us all,” says Keith Desserich, Chairman and Co-Founder of The Cure Starts Now Foundation. The Cure Starts Now Foundation is one of the first foundations to focus on such a “homerun strategy” to cancer research, gaining worldwide recognition both by families and other cancer organizations for their focus on revolutionary new strategies for cancer research. Meditation for being

“in-the-moment” & Enlightenment by Colleen Kerns

Suggestions for Beginners The following are suggestions for beginning a meditation practice:

1. Find a quiet spot where you will not be disturbed (that includes phones and other noises) for at least 20 minutes.

2. Soft music can be played quietly in the background to create a space of peace and serenity.

T

he practice of mediation is growing in popularity in western society as the many benefits are becoming understood by more people. It is a wonderful tool that can be used to quiet the mind, help one relax, learn to focus, be “in the moment,” and get in touch with one’s body so it can be kept healthy and even healed when necessary.

3. Sit in a comfortable position. 4. Start at your head and consciously release any tension.

5. Slowly move your awareness down your body and when you find tension slowly release it. Guided and Silent Meditation Two of the many different types of mediation are guided and silent. In guided mediation the voice of another person, live or on a recording such as a CD, instructs one to sit quietly and might provide visualizations and/or breathing techniques. On the other hand, silent mediation is where one sits alone or in a group and gently focuses on something such as one’s breathing in order to open up to one’s self, OH or God. 10663 Loveland-Madeira Rd., inner Suite self, 162 •higher Loveland, 45140 Another goal513.752.9288 of mediation•inFax: many spiritual traditions is to 513.722.0752 become more conscious or “enlightened.” The spiritual path ads@wholelivingjournal.com is one that unfolds gradually as one becomes more and more aware.

6. Gently focus on your breathing. 7. Fall into the rhythm of your breathing and feel what it is like to have your awareness present in the moment.

8. When you are ready, gently open your eyes. Meditate to reduce stress, not increase it! Remember not to worry about “getting it right.” There is no right or wrong way, there’s only your way. Don’t judge yourself. Many times we say to ourselves, “I am not doing this right.” Mediation is not about adding more stress to your life. Give yourself a break and if you find your mind wandering off during mediation, just gently notice and bring it back.

About the author: Colleen Kerns has been studying mediation for 20 years. She has found it to be very useful in her life in many ways. She teaches private mediation lessons and a monthly class. She can be reached at 513.503.6593.

Our Drive

to Bond by Bruce H. Lipton, Ph.D.

ant colony. Lewis Thomas described ants this way: “Ants are so much like human beings as to be an embarrassment. They farm fungi, raise aphids as livestock, launch armies into war, use chemical sprays to alarm and confuse enemies, capture slaves, engage in child labor, exchange information ceaselessly. They do everything but watch television.”

I

f you’re a survivor of multiple failed relationships, you may wonder why you keep trying. I can assure you that you don’t persist just for the (sometimes short-lived) good times. And you don’t persist because of TV ads featuring loving couples on tropical islands. You persist, despite your track record and despite dismal divorce statistics, because you are designed to bond. Human beings are not meant to live alone. There is a fundamental biological imperative that propels you and every organism on this planet to be in a community, to be in relationship with other organisms. Whether you’re thinking about it consciously or not, your biology is pushing you to bond. In fact, the coming together of individuals in community (starting with two) is a principle force that drives biological evolution, a phenomenon I call spontaneous evolution, which I cover in depth in the book of the same name.

The Drive to Survive There are, of course, additional biological imperatives designed to ensure individual and species survival: the drive for food, for sex, for growth, for protection, and the ferocious, inexplicable drive to fight for life. We don’t know where or how the will to live is programmed into cells, but it is a fact that no organism will readily give up its life. Try to kill the most primitive of organisms and that bacterium doesn’t say, “Okay, I’ll wait until you kill me.” Instead, it will make every evasive maneuver in its power to sustain its survival. When our biological drives are not being fulfilled, when our survival is threatened, we get a feeling in the pit of our stomach that something is wrong even before our conscious minds comprehend the danger.

We’re So Much Like Ants It’s Embarrassing! The social nature of harmonious animal societies can provide fundamental insights directly applicable to human civilization. One great example is an ant, which, like a human being, is a multicellular social organism; when you take an ant out of its community it will die. In fact, an individual ant is really a suborganism; the true organism is actually represented by the

Tom Hanks Played It Best As for human communities, we can fend for ourselves as individuals longer than a single ant can, but we’re likely to go crazy in the process. I’m reminded of the movie Cast Away in which Tom Hanks plays a man who is marooned on an island in the South Pacific. He uses his own bloody hand to imprint a face on a Wilson Sporting Goods volleyball he calls “Wilson” so he can have someone to talk to. Finally, after four years, he takes the risky step of venturing off the island in a makeshift raft because he’d rather die trying to find someone to communicate with than stay by himself on the island, even though he has figured out how to secure food and drink—that is, how to survive. Most people think that the drive to propagate is the most fundamental biological imperative for humans, and there’s no doubt that reproduction of the individual is fundamental to species survival. That’s why for most of us sex is so pleasurable—Nature wanted to ensure that humans have the desire to procreate and sustain the species. But Hanks doesn’t venture off the island to propagate; he ventures off the island to communicate with someone other than a volleyball.

The Honeymoon Effect Instead of cursing our bad luck in relationships, we need to recognize that our efforts at bonding are a fundamental drive of Nature and that these bonds can be cooperative and harmonious. We need to heed Rumi’s sage advice: “Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today I am wise, so I am changing myself.” When we start living in harmony with Nature (and with ourselves), we can move on to creating The Honeymoon Effect in our lives, where relationships are based on love, cooperation, and communication. In the next chapter, we’ll explore the most fundamental form of communication among organisms: energy vibrations. *Excerpted from The Honeymoon Effect: The Science of Creating Heaven on Earth by Bruce H. Lipton, Ph.D. © 2013. (Note: Tara L. Robinson will interview Bruce Lipton on Tuesday, July 2, 3:30-4:30pm on WAIF 88.3FM or www.waif883.org )

Heat Stroke in Dogs: Signs to Watch There is nothing worse than coming home from work to find your best buddy sprawled out in the sun, seizing because he became overheated. Sadly, it happens many times each summer, and it’s always a scary emergency. Older dogs are at a great risk, but any aged dog can become overheated in our Cincinnati summer. Sometimes shade just isn’t enough relief, especially darker colored dogs. Some signs of Heat Stroke can be: • Panting • Dehydration • Excessive drooling • Increased body temperature • Reddened gums and moist tissues • Production of only small amounts of urine or no urine • Rapid heart rate

• Irregular heart beats • Fluid build-up in the lungs; sudden • • • • • • • • •

Discover Your

Intuitive Voice with

Crayons by Kristy Whitaker

hat if I told you that you can find your intuition with a box of crayons? Most people wouldn’t believe me. However, discovering your intuition by playing with crayons is a fun and simple way of becoming familiar with your unique intuitive language. This activity provides immediate and tangible information on how accurately you listen to your intuition, and most importantly, how your intuition speaks to you.

W

How Intuition Speaks Intuition guides us by showing us synchronicities, signs and affirmations, and by using repetitive thoughts and feelings. The language of intuition is one of imagery, words, smells, senses, dreams, memories, knowings and gut feelings. The first step to building your intuitive abilities is to learn which form your intuitive voice uses.

An Intuitive Guessing Game This is where a box of crayons comes in handy. Crayons are the tools we’ll use in this intuitive guessing game. This experiment can help you listen to and become more familiar with your intuitive language. Through this familiarity you will learn to discern your intuitive voice from a multitude of other distracting voices that run through your head.

Experiment: Learning Your Intuitive Language Step 1: Take a box of crayons and spread them out over a table top. Shuffle them about to mix the colors around. Close your eyes and pick up a crayon. Step 2: As you hold the crayon in your hand, slowly inhale and exhale three times. Be fully aware of any thoughts, feelings, images, or other sensations you have during this time. When you are ready, guess the color of the crayon. The Results The results, whether you are right or wrong, isn’t what is important. Instead, focus on the unique signature your intuition has. How did your intuition convey its message to you? How did you know what color to guess? Did you hear a description? Did you see a picture or an object? Did you smell anything? Did you recall a memory? Did you have a gut feeling? Did you have a knowing?

Keep Playing It is possible that your intuition communicated in all or a combination of these ways. Continue with this experiment until you have a better understanding of the way in which your intuition speaks. Remember the point isn’t to guess the color of the crayon correctly. It is to learn your unique intuitive language. About the author: Kristy Whitaker, founder of Healing Village and ordained healing minister, is also a Reiki Master, Healing Touch Level I Practitioner, empath, and intuitive. The

Journey

῾Whole᾿ Wellness

to

by Kristy A. Brandabur

L

ook in the mirror and what do you see? You probably just see a reflection of your physical body peering back at you. Maybe that body is in tip top shape, but your spirit is lacking. Or maybe the physical body is run down, overweight, or sick, but your heart is full and overflowing with energy. Although we can see our physical bodies, a mirror only gives us a snippet of our entire being. Holistic wellness encompasses the whole; a total being of body, mind, emotion, and spirit. As a personal trainer, nutritional and wellness consultant, and life coach I have had the opportunity to see all, good and bad. I have worked with some tremendous athletes over the years, but the scars on their hearts and spirits keep them from reaching their maximum potential as a whole person, incapable of loving relationships or communicating their feelings. And the mother who has spent her time loving and caring for her children, with no time for herself, now finds herself overweight and facing disease. The man who works day in and day out, making a living to support his family, maintains normal blood pressure and eats right, but never gets to spend time with his family. Are any of these individuals well? The answer is no. Total wellness is so much more than the absence of disease; it is living life to the fullest and having a sense of purpose and enlightenment.

Body, Mind & Spirit When we become “awakened,” we begin looking at our lives as a whole. This period of enlightenment is designed to push us towards reaching our maximum potential in all areas of our

lives. Our physical bodies enable us to see, hear, taste, smell and feel. Our minds encompass our attitudes, knowledge and belief systems. Our emotional system oversees the vast array of emotions we experience, how we relate to them internally, and how we express them. Lastly, our spiritual selves contain our creativity and life purpose. You are so much more than a person in a body suit.

Allow Nature to Nurture Summer is a wonderful time of year to immerse yourself in nature, and find yourself embraced in the arms of Mother Earth. What a place to discover your true potential! Make your life meaningful, inside and out. Strive each day to wake with a positive attitude, love with your whole being, learn, grow, make peace with those in your life with whom the relationships have become tarnished. And most importantly embrace who you are. Appreciate the fact that you are an alive and vibrant “whole” person. About the author: Kristy A. Fat Facts - Good fats are important for good health

D

ebate on how much and what kind of fat we should eat has raged for decades. Should we eat high fat diets (such as Atkins), very low fat (Ornish), or focus on good fats (South Beach)? Most research about how dietary fat affects us has looked at secondary measures, like cholesterol and inflammation, which may or may not correlate with improvement in our health. What we need more of is information about how dietary fat affects people’s health outcomes, such as heart attacks, strokes, and premature mortality. A widely touted cholesterol medication, ezetimibe, has an excellent record of lowering total and LDL cholesterol, but it doesn’t improve risks of heart and other cardiovascular disease. Statins, on the other hand, reduce cardiovascular risk far more than would be expected from how much they lower cholesterol.

Recent research has shown that cutting way back on saturated fat for at least two years reduces the risk of cardiovascular events, including heart disease, stroke and peripheral vascular disease. Even greater effects on these health outcomes resulted when saturated fat was replaced with mono- or poly-unsaturated fats. Those results reinforce the recommendation to include healthful fats in the diet, including olive oil, nut, fish and canola oil. Good fats are important for good health. For instance, this chocolate pudding uses super-healthy walnut oil; it tastes so rich, your family won’t believe it’s good for you!

Guiltless Dark Chocolate Pudding (Serves 8) Ingredients: 6 high omega-3 eggs, separated ¾ cup natural sugar, divided 1 24-ounce package semi-sweet chocolate chips ½ cup walnut oil 2 tablespoons brandy Berries for garnish

Instructions: Beat egg yolks with ¼ cup sugar until light. Whip egg whites with remaining ½ cup sugar until forms soft peaks. Meanwhile, melt chocolate chips in a medium bowl, stopping to stir frequently, about 1 ½ minutes. Be careful not to burn. Add walnut oil and stir until smooth. Stir in brandy and egg yolk mixture. Add chocolate mixture to egg whites and beat until smooth. Divide into individual dishes and refrigerate until served. Garnish with fresh berries.

Load Up on Veggies and Fruit Summer is the easiest time of year to enjoy vegetables and fruit. Even so, most Americans fall far short of the recommended daily amount we should be eating. As recently as 2012, only one in three adults had two or more daily fruit servings and even fewer (26%) had that many veggie servings. And that count of veggies included potatoes! When you consider that the American Heart Association recommends a minimum of eight daily servings of fruits and vegetables, those statistics are even more, well, disheartening. While you’re firing up the grill this season, consider how easy and satisfying it is to add veggies, and even fruit, to the barbeque. Try putting chunks of vegetables and fruits on skewers, or cooking them on a grill topper that will keep them from falling through the grids. You only need to brush the food with a little vegetable oil (not olive oil, which will burn). Consider also grilling whole, fresh figs – put them on a skewer – for a delicious caramelized flavor. Stone fruit such as peaches and nectarines also take well to the grill; just cut them in half and remove the pit, but keep the peel on.

Steps 3 for a

Prosperous Life by Rev. Linda Ketchum

W

hat is prosperity to you? For me it is a vibrant life filled with joy, peace, a healthy body and healthy relationships. It is a life where my needs and desires are met in a wonderful and productive way on time. Are you living a prosperous life? If not now, when? Henry David Thoreau wrote, “Most men lead lives of quiet desperation and go to the grave with the song still in them.” Are we living in quiet desperation because we are focusing on what does not work in our lives or do we allow the song of a fulfilling life to sing through us? Here are three tools that I use to experience a more prosperous life. Know what you want. Setting longterm goals is important and there are times when I need a short process for clarity now. This is the one I use. First I ask myself what do I want or what am I to do? Next I ask, “Why do I want to do this?” The third question is, “How am I to do it?” An example of

the process is: I want to visit my mother. (This is the, “What?”) I have not seen her in almost a year and she is not in good health. (This answers the, “Why?”) She lives 1000 miles away so I want to fly. I check on times and prices and book a flight. (How) These three steps can be used in many situations to clarify a plan of action. Be grateful. Be grateful for everything that shows up in your life. Make a gratitude list every day and list at least five things for which you are thankful, try to list things you have never listed before. This opens you up to being aware of all the reasons you have to be grateful. Forgive. Forgiveness is the greatest and most powerful gift you can give yourself. It is the gift that keeps on giving. Unforgiveness is a weight we carry until we let it go. It doesn’t hurt the other person and they go on with their lives while we stay stuck. One of my favorite forgiveness tools is an affirmation, “(Name of person or situation) I love you, I bless you, I forgive you and I release you to

July-August 2013

your highest and best good.” When I do this affirmation for 21 days at least 21 times a day, I release my trapped and misdirected energy. This allows me live a more prosperous life by participating in life more fully. I believe these three tools are ways each one of us can shift our energy and move into a more prosperous, fulfilling and happy life. Give them a try and watch your life change. About the author: Rev. Using Crystals for Healing

and Much More by Inna Aracri

C

rystals and gemstones have a long history of use, but recently there has been a growing interest in using them for many different purposes including bringing about good health, increasing wealth, purifying new spaces, cleansing the body or energy field, attracting love, healing from disease, and more.

But does it work?

Popular Crystals Used for Healing

So, does this healing and energy potential really exist? And if it does, how does it work? Well, the answer can be found if we look at the items we use every day even though we might not be aware that they function based on the properties of crystalline energy; items such as clocks, radios, acoustic devices, and television/computer screens. Pyroelectricity and piezoelectricity are two different types of energy which crystals can produce. The prefixes “pyro” and “piezo” are derived from Greek words meaning “fire” and “to press.” The difference is that one type of energy is produced through a change in temperature and the other is achieved through pressure. Crystals have the ability to transfer energy, retain it, maintain its intensity, and focus and transmit it over great distances. Crystal healers understand that the energy produced by crystals merges directly with the electromagnetic field which surrounds the human body. That field can often be seen in pictures using special equipment in what is known as Kirlian photography. And so, when crystals and gemstones are worn on the body or carried in close proximity to a person, such as what happens during healing work, the body of that person is affected.

• Black Tourmaline - repels negativity, helps with detoxification

Properties of Crystals Traits like the crystal’s color, its clarity or cloudiness, or its shape, result in each crystal having a unique energy. Every crystal has certain characteristics, just like people, that are helpful in different circumstances. A color blur may help one to feel more peaceful and calm, whereas a red stone may induce vigor and ambition. A crystal that is totally clear can help clear the mind of muddled thoughts and move the user into clarity. Gemstones radiate their life force with great power. When used properly, they can bring light into areas of darkness and neutralize the blockages within one’s being. As these blockages dissolve, the light of the life force can once again shine through to enliven, nourish and heal. Each type of gemstone expresses a different frequency; therefore each addresses different kinds of blockages.

Kyanite - boosts immune system, brings tranquility

Obsidian - helps one surrender past pathways or negative habits

Green Fluorite - increases cell regeneration and assimilates vital nutrients, helps bones and teeth, and eases arthritis

Seraphinite - purifies the blood, helps with cellular regeneration, toxin elimination, circulatory and nervous system

Other Uses In addition to healing, crystals and gemstones have many other common uses. They can help deepen one’s meditation practice (layouts can be created known as crystal grids). They can be used to help manifest desires when they are infused or “programmed” with one’s intentions. Crystals are known to change the structure of water by charging it with negative ions, which makes the water healthier as well as the body that ingests it. And, when used properly, they can protect and generate and harmonious environment. Add Heat to

Your Summer

Herbs ‘n Such, by Mimi Tagher

A

s the summer heat rolls in and temperatures near 100 degrees, I usually write about herbs and foods that keep us cool. Instead, this issue I am writing about one of the hottest herbs on the market today: cayenne pepper. Believe it or not, taken internally, this spice actually helps lower body temperature and battle the heat. The cayenne pepper is a member of the Capsicum family of vegetables, which are more commonly known as chili peppers. It is known botanically as Capsicum annuum. The common name “cayenne” was given to this pepper because of Proof Date: 08/17/10 its cultivation in a town that bears the same name in French Ref: GPU_081710 Guiana on the northeast coast of South America. Page Cayenne peppers are concentrated with vitamins and minerals and other phyto-nutrients. Fresh cayenne peppers, red or green, are an extremely rich source of vitamin A and vitamin C. The spice also contains very high levels of essential minerals such as iron, copper, zinc, potassium, manganese, magnesium, and selenium.

Ancient Medicine Native Americans have used cayenne as both food and medicine for at least 9,000 years. Cayenne has also been used in Ayurvedic, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean medicines as an oral remedy for digestive problems, circulatory problems, heart disease, high cholesterol, high triglycerides, appetite control and weight loss. It traditionally has been applied to the skin for arthritis and muscle pain, and to relieve itching and inflammation from psoriasis.

P is for Pain Today in the United States, ointments and creams with capsaicin are used primarily to relieve pain from arthritis and shingles. It works well for both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, as well as joint or muscle pain from fibromyalgia and other causes. It can also help with diabetic neuropathy. Energy Healing

You

Have the Power

by Terry Voorhees

F

or centuries world religions have taught about states of expanded consciousness generated through prayer or meditation. Christians depict Jesus and other holy figures with a light around their heads or emanating from their hearts. The Chinese speak of an energy they call Ch’i dating from the 3rd millennium B.C.E. Starting some 5,000 years ago, the ancient Indians practiced healing using Prana energy, the Sanskrit word for breath, life, and vitality of spirit. It has been documented that there are over 97 different cultures that refer to universal energy and healing. A loving mother or caregiver naturally induces healing by placing her hands upon a skinned knee, usually unaware that she is infusing light. A dash of ointment and a band-aid is the physical ritual for healing a scrape or bruise. My fascination with this blending of physical and spiritual healing has drawn me to find answers about our human energy field and the transformations that can ensue from manipulating it. As a young woman I bought a few “healing crystals” from vendors in Greenwich Village during a weekend trip to Manhattan because of the stones’ beauty. It was many years later before I discovered the real significance of crystal healing power. In my late forties I needed surgery to remove a large ovarian cyst. The pain after the surgery was intense. My sister suggested I contact a Healing Touch Practitioner. I had not heard

of Healing Touch but I wanted relief. The healing practitioner was Theresa, a woman who has become a dear friend and mentor. With her hands, Theresa infused healing into my energy field. The following day I could stand straight, steps were no longer a mountain to climb, and by the end of the week I was vacuuming! There was no explanation for the accelerated healing and this prompted me to validate healing touch and other modalities. My curiosity led me to many avenues of study, including Healing Touch, Reiki, and EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique). Addressing mental and physical problems on the physical plane is only an initial step in expanding our capability of healing on higher frequency levels. Healing on these higher frequency levels allows the body to balance itself and heal more quickly. I now incorporate these techniques into my practice and daily life. About the author: Terry Voorhees works out of her Loveland, Ohio home. For more information she can be reached at tv@cinci.rr.com or call 513.683.9059.

Yoga Life for

by Maureen Finn

oga is truly a life practice. It is a practice with benefits for the body, mind and spirit, adaptable to all stages of life. It makes one feel more alive, more capable of dealing with difficult life issues, more creative, and more engaged in the world.

Y

Today there are many kinds of yoga, focusing on body strength, alignment, fitness and physical discipline. Some practices integrate yoga as a way of life that includes meditation, nutrition and walking lightly on the earth, as a holistic practice that touches mind, body and spirit.

What is yoga and where did it come from?

Mind: enhanced ability to focus; clarity of thought; a sense

Yoga originated in India over 5000 years ago. It evolved as spiritual seekers wrestled with the ever mysterious “what’sit-all-about?” question. The thinking was that a focused, still mind was the beginning of enlightenment. Early yogis practiced meditation, pranayama (breathing exercises), mantras, chanting, and other disciplines. Then asanas, or body postures or positions, were discovered to be a way of focusing the mind on a pose, concentrating on breathing into it and thus stilling the mind.

of independence and control; a positive attitude/sense of self

Body: bone and core body strength, balance, flexibility; lower blood pressure and heart rate; increased flow of blood and other body fluids

Spirit: a sense of calm, peacefulness, and serenity;

compassion for self and others; creativity; equanimity in dealing with losses

Yoga after children, mid-life and beyond With the aging baby-boomers, a healthier and more active senior population than in previous generations, and even among the mothers of school-aged children who find they have a block of time for themselves again, interest in yoga is growing exponentially. Yoga has expanded from private studios into fitness and wellness centers, community/senior centers, retreat settings, and churches. Yoga can now be accessed on the computer and on television or DVDs for home or office practice. Chair yoga is an excellent option for elderly and disabled persons. A non-threatening way to try yoga can be to gather a few friends in a home, church or a meeting place and ask a teacher to do an introductory session. One can request an individual session with a teacher which then allows the session to be geared to his or her specific needs. The Silver Sneakers class at the YMCA is designed for seniors. Most local studios offer classes appropriate for beginners. About the author: Maureen Finn has been a practitioner of yoga for over 30 years. The mission of her business “Yoga for Life!” is to work with women mid-life and beyond. She teaches a class for new students at It’s Yoga Cincinnati on Wednesdays. maureenfinn8@gmail.com

Ancient

Traditions

Lammas/Lunasa Intuitive Insights, by Francine Haydon and Patricia Garry

I

n the Northern Hemisphere, Lammas takes place around August 1st (February 1st in the Southern Hemisphere). Lammas is the Anglo-Saxon festival of the wheat harvest and the first of three harvest festivals. Traditionally, farmers would make a loaf of bread from the new crop and take it to church to be blessed. Often pieces of the blessed loaf would be placed in the barn to protect their stores of grain. Lammas marked a coming season of plenty, hard work, comradery and a time to celebrate. In some parts of England, it is also called “the feast of first fruits.” The blessings of the fruits were performed in both eastern and western churches (known in the latter as “the feast of the Transfiguration of Christ”). First Fruits was also an African American festival celebrated in Cincinnati in the 90s at the end of July, which has now been incorporated into Kwanzaa.

Contests and Trial Marriages In the Celtic world, August 1st was called Lughnasadh (nasadh or feast, fair or celebration of the Irish god Lugh). Legend says that Lugh held a funeral feast and sporting celebration honoring his foster-mother, Tailtiu, who died of total exhaustion after clearing the plains of Ireland so crops could grow. Lunasa (in modern Gaelic) became a time of contests of skill and strength, as well as a time for hand-fastings or trial marriages that would last a year and a day. At the end of the trial period, the couple could end the contract or decide to get married. The Celts would gather bilberries and pick corn, visit holy wells to pray for good health and then light bonfires at Lughnasadh to feast and celebrate their bounty.

at this harvest time, we can also think about the harvest from our spiritual work so far this year. We’re now over halfway through the year, having gone from winter through spring to late summer. It’s time to make a gratitude list, thanking God / the Universe / Spirit / Our Higher Selves for all the great bounty and opportunities we’ve enjoyed so far in 2013, both expected and unexpected. You can write your list on beautiful paper, with a wonderful pen, and then put it on the fridge – or maybe inside your bedroom closet door – to make it easy to see and remember to take a moment of reflection during each day.

Reaping and Sowing

We can also figure out what we want to plant for our cool weather fall crops – more calm and contemplation, nurtured by making our To Do lists shorter, forgiving ourselves for not over-achieving all day every day, and being sure to include little gifts for ourselves on our lists. Spiritually speaking, we reap what we sow. Our harvest is an outcome of our small choices. Let’s make sure that harvest is bright and beautiful! Ah, Love. Love of you, Mama Earth. I am overcome by your presence in me. Oh, to feel the buzz of making-love-friction inside my body, pulsating outward, as I think of you, as I walk on your skin and breathe in your body odor. I’m in love! I’m in love! I’m in love with you! Caress me with your breezes and your soft, feathered leaves, and your liquid streams. Massage me with your rolling waves. Sing to me all the sweet songs of your dolphins and whales and frogs… and crickets and katydids and robins and doves— and nightingales. Passionately scream for me through the cry of your hawks and crows, of your mountain lions and thunderstorms. Keep me in the electric tension of your great lightening strikes and hurricanes. Whisper to me in my ears, show me Infinity— or a glimpse of something more as I gaze through your aura to your neighboring stars. Make me realize I am your love slave—bound to you in a completely dependent way. I cannot exist without you. It is through your presence that I am able to feel this— To hear your heartbeat, to see your majesty, to smell your body,

to taste your offerings to touch you. To breathe you. To know you. And to know myself. My experience is completely contingent upon your existence. You come first. You came first. You’ll be here after me. You hold me, solidly, unwaveringly. I am undone. I want nothing else. You are everything to me. I know there is a Thought that somehow created both you and me — And this is how I can even begin to relate to you. We come from One Source. And to this Source I am forever thankful. But it is for you that I am passionately, humanly overcome with desire. You are my muse, you are my reality, you are my sustainer. I am nothing without your fields to play in. I cannot see myself without your lakes to mirror me. I have fallen in this realization. I have fallen completely for you. I realize all this through one look at your moon. One look at your satellite and I know not to even try to resist wanting anything more. And I’ll stand in your rain, under a sweet, sweet cloud, and drink in your juices and get lost in their kiss. by Michelle Christine Garza ©2008
