A

round this time last year, the world cycling championships were held in Copenhagen, resulting in blocked roads all over town.

Initially there was some serious complaining about how we’d all be stuck in traffic for an entire week, but as the days passed and the actual event began, we somehow learned to adapt, to find other routes, or to simply just leave the car at home and walk to work. One thing we didn’t stop worrying about, however, was the appearance and appeal of our town while the races took place. Hundreds of cameras were filming this from all angles, millions were watching from near and WHERE2GO SUMMER 2012

far away, yet half the the time, the cyclists were racing through streets and squares mangled by road work, construction sites, and, in some cases, just big holes, put there for no apparent reason. Copenhagen certainly didn’t look like it did in the postcards.

The thing is, Copenhagen isn’t that big, so if you decide to expand the underground Metro, and thereby digging wide tunnels through decades upon decades of old water pipes, electrical wiring, and the odd ancient town gate, well, you’re going to leave a bit of a mess, aren’t you? That’s our excuse, but if you thought last year was bad, it’s nothing compared to the holes they’re digging in the ground today.

Rådhuspladsen, our town square and the very heart of the city? A big hole in the ground. Nørreport, the busiest train- and Metro station in the country? A big hole in the ground. Kongens Nytorv, the most beautiful sight in Copenhagen? Well, you guessed it.

Unless you set camp in Nyhavn or right next to the Little Mermaid, the picturesque Copenhagen you know from the postcards, will be overshadowed by the huge development, our city is going through right now. If all goes as planned (which it rarely does), the Metro will be finished by 2018. Opposite the main entrance to Tivoli, you’ll find a huge pile of rubble, but in a few years, a fascinating skyscraper will rise from the dust. The eastern part of Vesterbrogade has been blocked, causing quite a few traffic problems, but soon, we’ll all be drinking our coffee in the middle of the once very busy street, wondering what all the fuss was about. Because that’s what we do in Copenhagen. We complain, and then we learn to adapt. We’re like little ants in that sense. If you put an obstacle in front of us, we’ll simply walk around it. Complaining, yes, but adapting nonetheless.

I hope you will too during your visit. Welcome to Copenhagen - It’s the most beautiful hole in the world.

He looks like he just fell out of a hardcore rock band, he’s the kind of DJ who’s not afraid to play a full Oasis song in the middle of his set, and he recently asked one of the world’s biggest stars to “change his lyrics”. Meet the man who’s just about to become our biggest international star.

A

lexander Brown just got back from filming a video with hiphop superstar Busta Rhymes. Pitbull, the most successful Latin American pop artist in recent years, sings on one of his songs, and he’s doing some “stuff” with another world famous rapper, Lil’ Wayne. In other words, things are picking up for the 30-year old DJ, who’s had a lot of luck in convincing some very big names to sing on his tracks. So is this all a question of charming one’s way into the right celebrity circles?

“Nah. In the end, it’s just business.

Business and relations. You start building them, and maybe it will end up turning into something, maybe it won’t. You’re selling something you hope they’ll like. I’ve also sent out a lot

of tracks that they didn’t like, so you never know.”

Although Alexander Brown’s success might come down to a large amount of talent and a little bit of luck, there’s also a lot to be said about the fact that he and his occasional DJ-partner, Morten Hampenberg, have something the Americans don’t.

“To them, we Scandinavians seem very exotic. They’ve never heard a sound like this before, and on top of that, here I am, looking like someone from a rock band. I know it sounds strange, but someone over there told me that there’s actually a bigger Latin influence in European club music than in American. Their sound is very stiff, very hard. Unlike us, almost none of their producers have a background in club music, so they’re still picking up on things over there.”

Hanging out - musically speaking - with some of the biggest names in music, can also have its ups and downs. When Alexander Brown and Morten Hampenberg managed to secure a deal with Pitbull for the song “Raise The Roof”, they were ecstatic. Until the moment they actually heard Pitbull’s 

“The first vocals Pitbull sent us… we didn’t like them. But how do you tell someone as big as Pitbull to start over and give us something better? That’s a difficult situation. Luckily, he thought we had a good point, so he changed his lyrics, but when you do things this way, it’s at the mercy of these stars. You never really know what comes back.”

And that’s not even the only challenging situation, he’s found himself in.

Last month he and Morten Hampenberg travelled to New York City to record a video with Busta Rhymes for the song “You’re A Star”.

“I worked for months to set up the video shoot in New York, and then all of a sudden they call you and say “if we’re going to do this thing, it needs to

be NOW!”. So we jumped on a plane, and the first thing I do when we land is turn on my phone, and there’s a message from Busta Rhymes’ people, asking us if we could do it next week instead! We finally manage to set up the shoot the following day, yet he still turns up a day late, costing us a lot of money. But he shows up - as I said, a day late - and he’s in a pretty bad mood, cause he’d rather be partying in Miami. But after twenty minutes and

some champagne, he’s nice, funny and very professional, we do the video, and everything ends well. But I’ll tell you this, it’s the craziest thing I’ve ever experienced.”

Right now, Alexander Brown is going to focus on just having fun doing what he does. Being able to record with Busta Rhymes, Pitbull, Lil’ Wayne and Stine Bramsen, lead singer of Danish pop sensation Alphabeat, has made him a bit of a household name in Denmark, in clubs as well as on radio. But he’s also the kind of artist who likes to rattle the chain every now and then.

“I played a set in a club recently.

The piano is a beautiful instrument, so why hide it inside a big wooden box? That’s what Poul Henningsen asked himself 80 years ago, and that’s why he took it upon himself to design a piano so unique and futuristic that it’s still unmatched to this day.

I

s it a sculpture? An insect? No, it’s a grand piano – but a very unique one. This instrument is the perfect fusion between tradition and design, created by legendary German piano-makers Blüthner with their unique sense of craft, and famous Danish designer Poul Henningsen’s ability to create icons with his designs.

The story about this sensational piano begins in 1931. Poul Henningsen, who’s famous for his lamp designs, decided to create a grand piano where the actual instrument itself wouldn’t be hidden away inside a big box. Back then, this was almost a futuristic approach to design, but the result – the PH Piano – is a global design-icon.

The piano has been stripped of all excess material, allowing you to take a direct view of the instrument itself. And if you do want to close the

top down, it’s made of acrylic glass and therefore transparent. As Poul Henningsen said himself – you also remove the violin from its case before you play it.

The curved legs are made of polished steel, and sit so far apart that you can easily fit a big drum underneath them, inspired by talks between Poul Henningsen and renowed jazz-pianist Leo Mathiesen during the design process.

ICONIC DESIGN – POOR SOUND

From the first piano was completed at the Blüthner factory in Leipzig in 1931 to the early 60’s, 70 pianos were made.

Today, it’s very difficult to find one of the original instruments, one of them has even been the property of director Steven Spielberg.

If you’re a professional pianist, don’t

spend all your hard earned money on one of the original pianos. It wasn’t as easy on the ears as it was on the eyes, but luckily that has changed, now that the piano has been put back into production. Today, the sound quality measures up to the best in the world.

The PH Grand Piano is still being made by Blüthner, and ToneArt A/S in Bredgade have the exclusive distribution rights. The clients come from all countries, and they’re allowed to customize their own instrument, for example, by deciding the color and leather material. The Danish buyers usually prefer the original red or brandy colored version, but that doesn’t make it less of a unique and interesting item.

FRU HEIBERG A few hundred metres from Trianglen, in a relatively small, nondescript sidestreet, you’ll find one of the best restaurants in Østerbro. It’s not very big, which usually just makes eating there a more personal experience, but the menu at Fru Heiberg is close to incredible. The kitchen is Danish, but with a French approach, and the fact that they’ve recently begun serving lunch as well, just makes Fru Heiberg even more recommendable.

Okay, you’ve seen the Little Mermaid and asked yourself ”I went all the way to Copenhagen for this little thing?” So now what?

Since Østerbro isn’t really the best place to shop, unless you’re looking for children’s clothes, you should do some serious picnicking. Back in ye olden days, Østerbro – and especially the old citadel (Kastellet) – was the place to be if you were looking for a fight with the Swedish, English or whoever was trying to burn down Copenhagen in those days, and historically, it’s very, very exciting stuff. But the main reason we suggest you go out there, is because of the breathtaking view of Copenhagen. This is the perfect place for a picnic, a romantic walk or a nice nap in the grass if you need one.

It’s in a basement, it used to be a place mostly for thirsty Russian sailors, and let’s be honest, if the service comes with a smile, condsider yourself lucky. So why do we still urge you to visit St Petersborg? One word: steak. This is not one of those modern, hip steakhouses, stripped of all charm, especially because Café Petersborg still looks exactly like it did 50 years ago. It’s like eating steak in the middle of history, and you don’t even have to fight off drunk, Russian sailors anymore. Well, on most nights…

The Danish national stadium, commonly referrred to as Parken, is home to both the Danish national football team and FC Copenhagen (FCK). The stadium was also the scene of the so-called 2007-fan attack where a drunken, Danish football fan ran onto the pitch and attacked the referee, resulting in Denmark losing the match by default. It’s still a relatively open wound in our national sense of pride, so approach this subject with caution when in the company of Danes.

One of the tallest buildings in Østerbro is Rigshospitalet, a big hospital. The hospital was the scene of the horror mini-series ‘Riget’, directed

by Danish director Lars Von Trier, who would later go on to direct such famous films as Melancholia, Antichrist and Dogville. He also offended a lot of people at the Cannes Film Festival last year…

GEFÄHRLICH Speaking of a good night out; one of the best places to go for just that is Gefährlich on Fælledvej. It’s like a restaurant superhero – a café and restaurant at day, an informal yet highly energetic night club at night. At day, Gefährlich excells in classic Danish cuisine, but at night, the ground floor turns into a nightclub. You GEFÄRHLICH never know if it’s a night of 80’s hair metal, forgotten songs from the 50’s or today’s best new dance music, but what you do know is that the drinks are good, the service friendly and the food is exceptional.

GRØD ”Grød” means porridge, and has always been – at least during the last few decades – something you’d only see served to children or when visiting your grandmother at her retirement home. People keep saying that the cd is dead, but at Route 66 it was never really alive in the first place. Route 66 is one of the oldest vinyl-only music shops in Copenhagen, having been around even when vinyl records weren’t hip. These days, most music shops in Copenhagen carry vinyl, but none with the same level of expertise and commitment as these guys.

Acne may be Swedish, but given how many Danes wouldn’t be caught dead in anything but Acne clothes, we might as well pretend it’s our own invention. Acne Archives is actually not a normal shop, but an outlet that mainly carries collection samples, all at a rather cheap price.

TORVEHALLERNE Technically this isn’t actually Nørrebro, but if you start at Nørreport and make your way towards Nørrebro, you’ll pass one of the biggest culinary attractions in Copenhagen. Throughout the years, Nørrebro has been the scene of three serious riots, turning the otherwise peaceful streets into a regular warzone? The first riot was in 1993 right after Denmark joined the European Union, and the last one was five years ago when the council decided to close Ungdomhuset on Jagtvej 69.

There’s a bar and concert venue on Guldbergsgade called Rust. It was named after Mathias Rust, the german student who landed on Moscow’s Red Square in 1987 and subsequently was sentenced to four years in a Siberian prison camp.

The Copenhagen Zoo on top of Valby Bakke is one of the oldest zoos in the world, dating back to 1859.

However, it’s Italian like you’ve probably never tasted it before, never rushing things and always making sure that the ingredients are among the best to be found anywhere in Copenhagen.

100 years ago, no one in their right mind would set foot on either Christianshavn or Islands Brygge, unless they lived there or was looking to rob someone who did. Today, however, the two old working man’s neighbourhoods are among the hippest parts of Copenhagen.

There is one though, serving some of the best Danish and French food alongside a spectacular view of the Copenhagen seafront. It’s called Restaurant Viva, it’s on a boat between Christianshavn and Bryggen, and as we said, you’ll be lucky to find a better location for the evening.

JUMP IN! You’re never that far from a beach in Copenhagen. But why waste an hour in an overheated bus, when you can just cool down in the middle of the city? There are quite a few harbour baths in Copenhagen, but the most popular one is the one at Islands Brygge, right next to Langebro. There are lifeguards on duty at most times, the water is relatively clean (there aren’t that many ships going through these waters) and it’s what Copenhageners do on hot days.

People who live at Islands Brygge DON’T consider themselves as living on the island of Amager, just because they technically do. So just because Islands Brygge is a part of Amager, it’s really not. Confused?

Up till a few years ago, Holmen was home to nothing but abandoned old shipyard hangars and other defunct buildings.

Today, it’s one of the most attractive places in Copenhagen, thanks in part to the new Opera House opposite the royal residence, Amalienborg.

hen it comes to makeup, clashing colors are normally to be avoided at all costs. But something’s changed this season, and according to Max Factor’s Danish makeup artist, Mina Ingerslev, this summer is about creating contrasts with eye shadow and lip color. Just remember to approach with caution; the key to a stunning result is to not over-do it like they did in the 80’s.

Create a modern look with perfect balance between cool and warm colors, and a soft expression versus a strong look.

PERFECT COMBINATIONS

For this season, Mina Ingerslev suggests you use color combinations such as a yellowish eye shadow versus a reddish pink lip, a lush purple eye shadow with a coral lipstick, or a soft baby blue opposite orange lips. The

look that works for you, depends on your strongest features and what you wish to emphasize. Do you have full, luscious lips, you can easily use a distinct lip color and then go easy on the eyes with this season’s pretty pastels.

Are your eyes your best feature on the other hand, you should highlight them with a shadow that’s rich with pigments, and just give the lips a hint of lipstick. Here’s how you apply the look in easy steps.

Lips

Apply your chosen eye shadow on the entire upper eyelid. Keep the shadow intense on the lid itself and make sure to blend it above the crease, so the color fades out beautifully. You don’t want any hard lines.

To make eyes appear wider, trace the inner rims of eyes with a white pencil. It lightens up your eyes and gives you a fresh appearance.

Finish with mascara – as much as you like, just as long as you maintain the overall light and fresh look.

For daytime: Apply your chosen lipstick with your fingertips – it gives a casual and effortless look.

For evening: Let your lips leave a mark! Create a precise and strong lip with a lip liner. Make sure you only draw along the natural lines of the lip. Never attempt to draw your lips bigger – it rarely works out. For a more lasting lip color, apply the liner on the entire lip and then apply your chosen lipstick. Kiss a Kleenex and apply again for a long lasting result.

It can be tricky to determine if your makeup shades are cool or warm. Mina Ingerslev suggests that you apply a little bit of your lipstick or eye shadow on the top of your hand. Does it have blue undertones, the makeup belongs to the cool colors, and if it has orange undertones, it belongs to the warm shades.

Warm colors are based on yellow, orange, brown, yellowish green, orange reds etc.

Cool colors are based on blue, green, pink, purple, blue-green, magenta, and blue-based red.

To differentiate between for example, a “warm pink” and a “cool pink”, you need to know that a warm pink is a peachy pink. A cool pink would be a purplish pink. A warm green would be a yellowish green. A cool green would be more blue.

3. DRINK WATER

THE HARDEST PART As Thure Lindhardt faces one of the biggest roles in his acting career, playing the man who kidnapped Natasha Kampusch, his greatest challenge is not finding his way into the mind of a monster.

It’s waking up someday not wanting to go back in there again.

y the looks of it, it might end up being one of those career-defining moments.

A performance we’ll still be talking about years from now, just like we’re still talking about Bruno Ganz’s role as Hitler in Der Untergang, or Ulrik Mühe as the Stasi-agent in Das Leben der Anderen. It will come to define Thure Lindhardt as an actor, in Denmark as well as the rest of the world, and perhaps most importantly, it will once again show Hollywood how far Danish acting has come in recent years.

In other words, it’s going to be a big deal.

“You remember her?”, asks Thure, pointing to the book “3.096 Days” by Natasha Kampush, the Austrian girl who was kidnapped at the age of 10

“ These parts have to be hard to play.

It shows you have humanity, and humanity is a difficult measure.”

in 1998 and held in captivity until she finally managed to escape in 2006. Of course I remember her. Most of us do.

It was a tragic story of evil disguised as love, one that struck fear in the hearts of all of us who have children of our own. And right now, Thure is in the middle of it. He’s been cast as Wolfgang Priklopil, the communications technician who kidnapped Natasha Kampush, keeping her hidden in his basement for eight years, throwing himself in front of a train in Vienna on the day of her escape. And now Thure has to become this man.

“I almost didn’t do it. When I first read the script, I said to myself - holy shit, you can’t do this. This is too difficult.”

WHAT LIES UNDERNEATH

I meet with Thure in his 4th floor apartment in Vesterbro, just a stone’s throw away from the old Carlsberg brewery. It’s early April, but due to some freak cold front from the north east it’s been snowing all day . Thure is either suffering from a cold, hung over from last night’s easter party or both, but there’s a friendliness to him that rubs off instantly. Like most Danish actors in this league, he’s a genuinely nice guy, which just makes it even harder to imagine him playing this upcoming part. But then again, like he says, it’s not supposed to be easy.

“These parts have to be hard to play.

It shows you have humanity, and humanity is a difficult measure. It’s about finding your way to the deepest core of the character, you play, and therein lies the hardest part. It doesn’t really matter who or what you play.”

It’s not the first time Thure plays a character that sees him slip into the mind and life of those somehow oblivious to human compassion or kindness. A few years ago, he was  WWW.WHERE2GO.DK

cast as the role of Lars, a young man who, after being kicked out of the army, suddenly finds himself attracted to a Danish neo-Nazi group. But amongst the racism and violence, there was also a tender side to Thure’s character. He falls in love with another male member of the group, and as you can probably imagine, it doesn’t exactly end well.

UNDERSTANDING IS NOT ACCEPTING

Neither does the story about the character, Thure’s playing now, but it’s not really a question about his demise, but about the actions that defined his life.

“When you play a role like that, it’s extremely difficult not to judge that person. I definitely found that hard.”

But how can you NOT judge a person who lets these dark sides surface?

“Well, as a person, I’m allowed to have an opinion about what he did and what kind of man he was. But I can’t do that as an actor. I have to find my way into the very essence of who he was, and what his motivations were. And I think that’s a huge part of the art of acting. This is where you can cast light on some of the sides of humanity, few of us really understand.

Perhaps you might even end up seeing them in a new light. That’s what acting can do. Make us recognize even the darkest sides of our selves.”

However, there is a difference between understanding someone’s actions and accepting them, says Thure.

“There’s a very fine line between those two. I would like to be able to understand them, but only because it would teach us to draw some sort of line and tell this person, “this is not okay”. And to be able to do that, you WHERE2GO SUMMER 2012

have to understand why they’re doing it in the first place. But you have to balance the two, and that’s never easy.”

THE FINE ART OF BEING FUNNY

If you look at Thure’s career so far, he seems to be very good at dividing his time between comedy and drama, between the films that let us see the deepest and darkest sides of humanity, and those that show the funniest sides of us. He’s played the role as troubled resistance fighter The Flame in the award winning film, Flame & Citron, about the Danish resistance during World War II, and he’s played the more role as a young man 

You’re basically trying to play a caricature instead of a real person, and it’s just as hard playing a happy person as it is playing someone who’s weighed down by grief and pain. It all comes down to the finer nuances and how you’re going to make sure that your audience will be able to believe in that specific character.”

This brings us to another set of opposites in Thure’s career: time spent in Denmark versus time spent in search of the international

breakthrough. He’s already seen how Hollywood works and what it can do. He’s played opposite Tom Hanks in Angels & Demons, and was in Sean Penn’s Into The Wild, but still does his fair share of Danish films and television. But seeing his name up there on the poster next to some of the biggest stars in Hollywood, and the fame that follows, isn’t the only advantage of working on international projects. It also helps to keep him on his marks.

“When you’re working in another country, they expect other things of you. Maybe they communicate in ways you’re not used to, maybe their sense of humor is different - or non-existent? Those things help to keep me awake. Plus, being in another country, chances are that no one’s going to know who I am, just like I won’t know them.

I can’t rely on the fact that they might know how good my acting was in past films. I’m only as good as I am right now, and that’s a big difference from working in Denmark.”

THE FINAL OPTION

The day after we talk, Thure is flying back to Munich. He tells me about the first role he ever played in Germany.

He was extremely nervous, practicing his lines over and over again, but these days, it’s become easier. This thing he’s doing, acting, still scares him though. Not the competition, not whether or not he’ll ever be a big Hollywood star (American actors haven’t done very much acting before they break through, he says, explaining why he and other Danish actors might have some advantage), or if he should find himself too old to make full use of his stardom (“I’m already too old to do that. People are always so drunk”, he says). No, his greatest fear is that those difficult parts, the ones that force him to try and slip into someone’s mind and life, should one day seem uninteresting to him.

“It scares me to wake up one morning without this curiosity, the energy and will to do these things. What if I woke up one day unable to do anything? I’d hope it would mean that my intelligence had gone as well, so I wouldn’t have to think about it. And then, luckily, I could start doing reality shows!”

These days, the café is just about the least posh place in town, but the service is still very friendly, just as the overall impression is one that will make you wish more places came like this. Denmark is one of the only countries in Europe where almost everything shuts down on Sundays, so if you need to buy new shoes, shirts or some other necessity, you’re in dire luck. But as all that is about to change, the question on everybody’s mind should be: Is this the end of Copenhagen as we know and love it?

ere’s a frightening thought. It’s Sunday and you’ve crossed off all the usual sites on your to-do list. The Little Mermaid, Nyhavn, Tivoli, all of them. So what are you going to do for the rest of your day? The one thing there is to do – shop. Only problem is, you can’t, simply because everything is closed. You walk up and down Strøget, looking for that one little fashion boutique or shopping mall that can serve all your money spending needs, but all you get are souvenir shops, kebab restaurants and the odd 7/Eleven here and there. Remember - it’s Sunday. Your money is no good here.

While most major European cities stay just about as open on Sundays as any other day of the week, Copenhagen is still trapped within the strict boundaries of “Lukkeloven”, a Shop’s Act limiting the hours shops and restaurants are allowed to operate. It’s pretty complicated (and boring) stuff, but in rough terms, most shops close at 6pm on weekdays, and can only stay open on a limited number of Sundays. 15 years ago, the streets of Copenhagen would be near-empty on weekends, but the last couple of years have seen more and more shops and supermarkets stay open on Sundays. From October 1st, the Shop’s Act will be history, no longer preventing you from improving your wardrobe. And so the shopping mobs may once again take to the streets on Sundays and late evenings.

CHANGE WILL COME Anne Glad, our foremost expert when it comes to the lifestyles of Danes, predicts that our first reaction to this sudden liberty, is to spend as much money as possible.

Simply because the entire shopping experience changes.

“It’s like we step into an airport. We start thinking in different ways, we become more liable to buy based on our impulses. But as we get used to being able to do our  WWW.WHERE2GO.DK

shopping on Sundays and late evenings, we’ll basically just begin doing our shopping when it suits our schedule.

A lot of people will think it’s amazing that they no longer have to do all their shopping on Saturday mornings like everybody else. Now, they can do it night, after work. And it’s about time this happened, isn’t it?”

Indeed it is. Just imagine being able to buy, say, shoes just before a big night out. The possibilities seem endless, and Anne Glad also sees shopping becoming more of a social event, given that it’s no longer something that needs to be rushed.

“The city will take on a completely new form of life on Friday evenings.

I can easily imagine people choosing to start a night on the town by going out shopping.”

Lise Hjort is the owner of aPair in Ny Østergade, one of Copenhagen’s most popular shoe stores, and she thinks WHERE2GO SUMMER 2012

Anne Glad has a good point.

“If we have an after-hours event for ladies, they’re usually very eager to shop. And a lot of my customers tell me that they’d appreciate the opportunity to do their shopping outside the normal opening hours”, she says. And it wouldn’t even turn her world upside down if she was suddenly to stay open on late nights and Sundays.

“I also have a store in the airport, and we’re open from 7am to 9pm, so we’re used to long hours.”

WHY DID THE DUCK CROSS THE STREET? But there might be a downside to all this as well, though.

been known as a relatively nice and quiet city, almost fairy-tale like in certain parts. It’s our brand, and according to Anne Glad, we’re jeopardizing it.

“The deserted streets on Sundays are definitely a part of Copenhagen, and a very unique thing about our city compared to other big cities. I live right in the middle of Copenhagen, and I love how the streets are so deserted and peaceful on Sundays. You might as well be walking in a forest, it’s that quiet. And that is going to disappear.”

They’re not too worried about that over at OPEN Copenhagen though. The way they see it, it might even end up strengthening Copenhagen’s brand as a relatively quiet city, when we’re not forced to do our shopping at the same time as everyone else. The longer the opening hours are, the more spacious the city will seem.

“There’s actually a lot of tourists who question why our shops are closed on Sundays. If they’re here on Sundays or bank holidays, they miss the opportunity to do some shopping themselves, just like they miss all the life. If shops stayed open longer, it could spread to cultural institutions. For example, a place such as the Royal Theatre could stay open in the school summer holidays and sometimes on Sundays too. I think tourists and Copenhageners alike would see that as a great service, and make Copenhagen more attractive”, says Liv Thøger, Brand Director of the city brand, OPEN Copenhagen.

CONTEMPORARY AND CLASSIC! But won’t we have to choose between the H.C Andersen version of Copenhagen and the modern, open-at-alltimes Copenhagen? Will the Royal Guard be able to march up and down Strøget on Sundays, when the streets are crowded with shoppers? Who’s going to be taking pictures of the Little Mermaid if we’re all out buying new shoes? Can Copenhagen have both?

“I don’t see it as opposites”, says Liv Thøger.

“Copenhagen will always have its fantastic history, architecture, design, and Royal family, all things that represent this classic image. I don’t associate that with opening hours. They, on the other hand, are a part of a modern, accessible and open city, just like our harbor baths, modern infrastructure and bicycle routes, the world’s best Metro, an award-winning airport, the contemporary Nordic kitchen, our modern work-life-balance and democracy, and all the other things we Danes often take for granted. You could say that we’re a modern city with classic roots”, she says.

We would have liked to ask the mayor about his views on what will happen to Copenhagen when “Lukkeloven” disappears, but he wasn’t available for comment.

In fact, he was probably out shopping.

The Metro is open all week, all night long. Some night busses and S-trains are available at night as well. Most destinations in Copenhagen are within the 1-2 zone area. A 2-zone ticket is 24 DKK (February 2012). Save money with a multitrip ticket. A 10 trip-card is 145 DKK. All cabs accept international credit cards.

Shopping and nightlife hours:

Most shops are closed on Sundays – except for the first Sunday in the month. Many close at 4 on Saturdays.

Kiosks, takeaway vendors, bakeries and some supermarkets are open all week.

Large stores and supermarkets usually stay open longer, and outside ordinary shopping hours various kiosks are open for sale of tobacco, newspapers and sweets.

Many bars and clubs are open until 4 or 5 am during the weekends.

Tips are included everywhere so it should only be given for exceptionally good service.

Bike culture: Many tourists are overwhelmed with the number of people using their bikes as transportation in Copenhagen. Be alert when you’re walking or driving - a lot of the time you don’t see or hear them coming, and many of them have a tendency to break the traffic code in their hurry to get from A to B. humour: Danes believe they have a really good sense of humour – judge for yourself – at least they always tend to use a lot of irony. If you’re here for just this one day, you should witness the very best this city has to offer.

Begin your day at Restaurant Sult at The danish Film Institute in Gothersgade 55 right across from The King’s Garden. Here you will get one of the best brunches in town. Once you’re full and ready to take on the city, take a stroll down Bredgade in one of the oldest parts of Copenhagen. You will be within walking distance of amalienborg, home to the Royal Family and the beautiful Marble Church, which was built in 1740.

No visit is complete without a walk along langelinie to see The little Mermaid, who was donated by Carl Jacobsen, a brewer from Carlsberg in 1913. That means next year, she will be 100 years old.

Don’t let her small size fool you. What she lacks in volume, she more than makes up for in charisma.

Afterwards, grab a cup of coffee at the cosy, little café Kafferiet at esplanaden. You can’t miss it – it’s the one with the mint green front. Once the clock hits “lunch” you should pop by one of the traditional lunch restaurants serving the famous Danish “smørrebrød” (meat toppings on rye bread). Go to Restaurant Schønnemanns at Hauser Plads 16, and indulge in their exquisite smørrebrød, which they have served since 1877. They’ve had many years to practice, and it shows in the taste!

Now it’s time to test the city’s shopping opportunities. Strøget – the shopping street number one - is sure to have anything you might desire. Browse your way through the exclusive Illum department store in the heart of the city, or take a peek inside the smaller, independent shops in Gammel Mønt, Store Regnegade and Pilestræde.

Once your wallet and your legs have had enough, go down to Gammel Strand and hop on one of the canal boats. The ride takes about an hour and you will get to see the city from a whole new perspective, all while giving your feet a break. The canal tours depart from Gammel Strand, Holmens Kirke and Nyhavn.

ou can also enjoy Copenhagen on two wheels while helping fight poverty in Africa. Who would have thought that? Baisikeli Bike Rentals is located in Vesterbro and the city centre and collects used bicycles and ships them to Mozambique and Sierra Leone where they are repaired and sold. All expenses in Denmark are financed through the two bike shops in Copenhagen, so all the money earned in Africa can be reinvested in developing the workshops into producing their own bikes.

The bikes are what the Copenhageners use, and you can also rent one of the very popular three-wheeled cargo-bikes, where you can have two children or one adult sitting in the front carrier.

Green Copenhagen

Copenhagen is at the top of its game when it comes to the environment. The city is committed to being the world’s first CO2 neutral capital by 2025, and from 20072011 Copenhagen was appointed the world’s first socalled ’Bike City’ by the international cycling union (UCI).

The city busses operate as Line 11A and run on electricity, which minimize their CO2 output. The electrical Line 11A busses mainly drive within the city centre and therefore in proximity of the sights and attractions. The route stops by Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, Tivoli, The National Museum and Kongens Nytorv. Tickets cost 24 DKK (adults) and 12 DKK (children) and are valid for one hour. Line 11A operates within the following hours: 9 – 8 pm (Monday – Friday), 10 – 4 pm (Saturday) and 11 – 3 pm (Sunday).

Borrow a bike

openhagen is also home to Denmark’s first “cultural institute for bicycles” as they put it. Bicycle Innovation Lab is both a bike library and a workshop. At the library you can borrow various bikes for a deposit of 500 DKK. Why not go for something quite extraordinary like the loading bike (aka “Christiania-cyklen”), which has become a classic on the cycle paths? Or maybe the cabin bicycle that looks like a spaceship?

The choice is yours. Opening hours for the bike library are 4 – 6 pm on Mondays and Thursdays. The rental bikes will be handed out between 5 and 6 pm. and must be returned between 4 and 5 pm. The rental period is usually 3-4 days and you book via the website

Foie gras for the foodies It’s almost impossible to say Copenhagen and not think about Tivoli, however it’s not only fun and games.

It’s also famous for a variety of great restaurants. NIMB is actually a hotel, but it’s also home to the Michelin-awarded restaurant Herman. There are plenty of references to famous, Danish dishes at Restaurant Herman: æbleskiver (the Danish version of a doughnut), Brændende Kærlighed (meaning Burning Love; a dish with mashed potatoes, fried onions and bacon) and liver

pate. However, at Herman, the liver pate is made from foie gras. Here, they take the Danish traditions and incorporate them into their international kitchen. If you’re in the mood for fish, Café Sundet is an excellent choice. A cosy restaurant with a picturesque view of Øresund.

The location of the restaurant at the Svanemølle harbour means that it’s surrounded by water, and this of course adds to a menu that’s highly based on the treasures of the sea that surrounds Denmark.

The lunch menu offers lobster with basil and garlic, and smoked eel served with a cream of chives. For dinner, Café Sundet has a “Dish of the day” which also serves the best from Øresund, for instance the Danish specialty fish cakes served with remoulade (the Danish version of tartar sauce) and organic potatoes.

Memories of grandmother Madklubben (the Food Club) is a small chain of restaurants all across Copenhagen, and one of them, you’ll find in Tivoli.

The food is best described as something your grandmother would make. Meaning delicious, Danish dishes that will bring every Dane back to their childhood. The nordic Wave The Nordic Wave was initiated by chefs Claus Meyer and René Redzepi of NOMA when they came up with the vision of using and refining produce and raw materials from the Nordic counRené Redzepi tries. No more olives, oranges, exotic fruits etc. Instead attention was given to deep-sea lobsters from the Faroe Islands, codfish and seaweed from Iceland, fruit and water from Greenland etc.

The vision has proven quite successful. Not only was NOMA awarded World’s Best Restaurant. Also the Copenhagen restaurants AOC, Kong Hans Kælder and NIMB Herman hold the prestigious Michelin star. These restaurants are also inspired by Meyer and Redzepi’s concept of using and refining the food treasures from Denmark and Scandinavia.

Another dish that’s considered very Danish is smørrebrød. These open sandwiches can truly be a tasty treat if they are done and served properly.

The simple secret is dark rye bread topped with all sorts of delicacies such as Danish meat balls, fried fish, eggs, herring, roast pork as the main ingredients, which again is topped with parsley, radishes, shrimps, tomatoes etc. The combinations are endless and the taste heavenly! One place in particular, known for combining bread and toppings in the perfect way, is Ida Davidsen’s restaurant. For more than 35 years she has been the Queen of Smørrebrød, and has among many other things served for the guests at Hotel Scandia in Hollywood and for the passengers on British Airways and Canadian Pacific. Ida not only carries a tradition in the Danish cuisine, but also a family dynasty. Her great grandfather Oskar Davidsen founded the first smørrebrødsrestaurant in Copenhagen in 1888. You can also get a look at the process of Thorvaldsens sculptures as many of his original sketches are preserved. The building itself is also worth a visit with its colourful corridors and picturesque courtyard.

Street of history

Another mandatory stop on the route of old Copenhagen is Nyhavn. The street by the waterfront was enaugurated by the king in 1670 and was originally known as a place where sailors and prostitutes gathered and no decent people went.

Today, it is one of the cosiest hubs in Copenhagen, always very popular with tourists and Copenhageners alike who enjoy a drink or dinner in the sunshine – sitting at the dock or in the many excellent restaurants and cafés. In Nyhavn you can truly experience the atmosphere of old Copenhagen - there are houses more than 300 years old – the oldest – build in 1681 - is number 9. And the famous Danish fairy tale writer H.C. Close to Nyhavn is Bredgade, and if you follow that street you will get to the royal palace Amalienborg, home of Queen Margrethe II and Crown Prince Frederik & Crown Princess Mary.

The royal palace consists of four mansions and one of them is open to the public. Christian VII’s Palace is a beautiful rococo style palace built in 1754 and restored in 1996. The royal family uses it for representative purposes like the annual New Year’s Ball where the government, ambassadors and foreign diplomats are invited to a formal celebration. Guided tours around the palace take place on Saturdays and Sundays at 1 and 2.30 pm. The Danish Parliament

The corridors of power

For anyone with an interest in history and politics, Christiansborg is a must-see destination. Originally, the castle served as royal palace for the court of King Christian VI, but the current building is actually the third castle. Christiansborg has caught fire and been rebuilt twice. The new Christiansborg is from 1927 and has been home to the Danish parliament ever since. The castle is open to the public so you can get a look at how Denmark is being governed. Guided tours around the corridors of power are provided by a parliamentary officer who talks about the chambers and how the politicians work. There’s also access to a sitting in the chamber and experience the debates and political agendas first hand. Though sometimes heated, the debates are governed by the Parliament Speaker.

the early Copenhagen history in short In the middle ages, Copenhagen was called Køpmannæhafn, a name that in modern English means the Harbour of Merchants, and refers to the significance that merchants had at that time.

Until recently, the eldest proof of urban settlements around the Copenhagen area was around year 1000, where proof of a small fishing village was found at the current centre of the city. However, in connection to the excavations for the Metro, archaeologists have found proof of bathing jetties dating back to around year 700.

At the excavations for the Metro Station at Kongens Nytorv, traces of a farm from the Viking Age has been found, along with the remains of the first city wall of the Middle Ages. Up until the 1850’s, Copenhagen was surrounded by ramparts to protect the city. To enter and leave the city, people had to pass through one of the four city walls; some of them known today as the train stations Nørreport, Østerport and Vesterport (‘Port’ meaning wall in this connection). It is still possible to see the remains of these ramparts around the city – for instance Kastellet in Østerbro and Stadsgraven between Christianshavn and Amager.

“If the walls had ears”

On Købmagergade, one of the shopping streets in Copenhagen, you can visit Rundetårn (The Round Tower) which is one of the most famous architectural landmarks in the history of Copenhagen. According to a legendary anecdote, King Christian IV who also built the tower - once rode his horse all along the spiral corridor up to the tower, which bears his coat of arms. Rundetårn was built in 1642 and was originally an observatory for astronomers, and the well-known Danish scientist Ole Rømer worked there. Today, the tower is a very popular tourist attraction and with its rise of 42 meters it offers a stunning view of Copenhagen. You can also take a look into space from the observatory through the telescopes designed by Jens Olsen, who also designed the clock on the city hall.

Our final destination is Det Lille Apotek (The Small Pharmacy), which is the oldest restaurant in Copenhagen. It was established in 1720 and is a place where the old phrase “If the walls had ears” seems appropriate. Famous Danes like fairy tale writer Hans Christian Andersen, jazz pianist Leo Mathiesen and composer Peter Faber have all dined in the cosy cellar. Another anecdote is that Peter Faber actually wrote the popular Danish Christmas carol “Højt Fra Træets Grønne Top” in an apartment above the restaurant.

Det Lille Apotek serves traditional Danish dishes, both for lunch and dinner. A popular dish is the “Stone Beef” where you actually prepare an undercut of sirloin yourself on a heated stone. Medium?

Royal Copenhagen specialises in fine china and porcelain. Many Danish homes have their collection of blue fluted plates and bowls in different patterns. FInland’S GOT IT TOO! It’s a common misconception that Finland is part of Scandinavia, even though they talk as strange as us and have it as cold as us.
