Around the Towns What’s Your Take?

Rediscover your thirst for knowledge by taking a class with the Haddonfield Adult School.

Tell us about your favorite teacher.

• PETER HOWE went to elementary school in Lester, England. He fondly recalled a school principal named Mr. Priest. “I felt safe with him. While principals are usually a bit domineering, he was friendly.” Peter is pictured enjoying a few fleeting minutes of sunshine on Haddon Ave with his furry friend Sabre.

• What’s On caught up with buddies JOSEPH LAMB (9) and BLAISE HENDRIX (9) at the Haddonfield Public Library. Joseph is grateful for the memories he made in Mrs. Halbert’s class, “the only class to do a Global Monster Project!” Blaise still likes Miss Tily best “because she is nice and a good teacher.” Joseph and Blaise attend Tatem Elementary in Haddonfield.

• LEE ORLANDO – a dedicated customer at The Nimble Needle in Haddonfield – recalled Pat DiChiaro as an English and drama teacher. “She was a force to be reckoned with! She opened up possibilities for me before I understood the meaning of possibilities!” Lee exclaimed.

NOW OPEN

• FRED HAMMEL and grandson AIDAN (7) didn’t hesitate ... “Mr. Burroughs was a math teacher and my basketball coach my whole life. He always treated me nicely,” recalled Fred. Aidan, an incoming first-grader, said that Ms. Woods at Haddonfield’s Tatem Elementary is tops because she taught him that “100 times 100 is 10,000!”

• For OLIVIA (10), CAROLL, and BRANDON STONER (6) attending Haddonfield schools is a family tradition. Olivia enjoyed her third-grade teacher at Elizabeth Haddon Elementary, Miss Wojtowicz, because “She really went out of her way to connect with the kids,” she explained. Caroll is still grateful to Mr. Kish “He brought the first Science Olympiad to Elizabeth Haddon.” Brandon loved being in Mrs. Ponto’s class last year.

• KRISTEN EGAN and her daughter, QUINN (9 mo’s), love their Music and Me classes at Grace Church with Miss Jeannie. “She is great with the kids and has great energy!” Kristen reported.

The King’s Road (a musical)

Written by Haddonfield’s Harry T. Kaufmann for the 250th celebration in 1963 and reprised in 1975 for the nation’s bicentennial, this delightful musical follows the lives of Mary Hopkins, Joshua Cresson, Jonas Cattell and others as they discover patriotism and fall in love amidst the intrusion of the British and Hessian armies. With the Indian King Tavern as a backdrop, the lovable innkeeper Hugh Creighton and his sprightly chambermaid Katie Muldoon play host to generals and troops, all of whom find themselves as guests of the Quaker village while the war rages on around them. NEW PROGRAMS AND INITIATIVES

This upcoming 2013-14 school year, Haddonfield School District is pursuing several dynamic, innovative initiatives and programs, including continuing the Achieve New Jersey Educator Evaluation Program. This program helps enhance teaching and learning to effectively support students competing in an age of rapidly changing technology and the increased demand in the world market as we move through the 21st Century. This new mandated evaluation program will review teacher and principal performance so that educators will be able to better reflect on instructional Best Practices in the classroom setting. The District successfully completed its teacher evaluation grant pilot program during the 2012/2013 school year- only one of ten school districts chosen in the state to participate in this grant initiative. The District was recognized by the state for its exemplary summative evaluation system. By reflecting upon creative instructional strategies and sharing Best Practices, teachers and administrators will build upon unique professional development opportunities along with integrating the use of technology in the classrooms.

This upcoming school year, the school district will provide Pre-school to 5th grade at each of the elementary schools, incorporating one pre-school class into each of the elementary school buildings. This was done to create neighborhood pre-school programs along with helping to alleviate overcrowding at Tatem (where the entire Pre-school program was originally housed). As enrollment continues to grow district-wide, creative solutions will be needed to solve long-term student population issues. The current enrollment for the District is 2,558 with a 7% increase in enrollment conservatively estimated within the next five years. With state mandates being discussed for full day kindergarten, the District will have to look out creative ways to secure much needed classroom space.

› A beloved family musical, The King’s Road, will be performed this fall as part of Haddonfield’s tricentennial celebration. Performances will take place at the historic Haddon Fortnightly. Written in 1963 by Haddonfield’s Harry Kaufmann, the story follows the lives of Mary Hopkins, Joshua Cresson, Jonas Cattell, and others. Using the Indian King Tavern as a backdrop, the lovable curator Hugh Creighton and his sprightly chambermaid, Katie Muldoon, play host to generals and troops while the war rages on around them. The King’s Road comes complete with singing, dancing, marching, and merriment. This tribute to the history of Haddonfield has touched hearts and entertained audiences for generations. The King’s Road was written for – and first produced – as part of Haddonfield 250th celebration. The show was performed again in honor of the nation’s bicentennial in 1976. Now, 37-years since its last performance, Haddonfield Plays & Players will bring the drama, comedy, and romance of The King’s Road back for audiences to enjoy. Evening performances will take place Thu Oct 3 thru Sat Oct 5 at 8pm. A matinee performance will take place on Oct 5 at 1pm. Tickets for this once-in-a-generation production cost $10 each and can be ordered at the Plays & Players website, haddonfieldplayers.com, or by calling 429-8139. During The King’s Road’s special engagement, ticket holders may present their tickets at participating restaurants – including the Bistro at Haddonfield, The British Chip Shop, Da Soli and Jersey Java – to receive a 10-percent discount. Last call for Haddy snapshots

 Dig out your crayons, markers, colored pencils – and perhaps your glue and glitter! – and get to work. Create a jurassic masterpiece using the Haddy image available at shophaddonfieldnj.com. Inspired by USA Today’s recognition of Haddonfield’s eight-foot statue of Hadrosaurus foulkii as one of South Jersey’s “Hidden Gems,” the Partnership for Haddonfield sponsored a Flat Haddy contest this summer. To participate, contestants must decorate their Flat Haddy and photograph her having fun – either around town or around the world! To enter, print your best Flat Haddy photo and submit it to the Haddonfield Information Center, at 2 Kings Court, on or before Fri Aug 30. Include your name, e-mail address, phone number, zip code, and a parent’s signature (if necessary) with your entry. Only printed photos will be eligible to win the grand prize – a $100 Townwide Gift Certificate. Printed photos will be displayed in the Information Center window. The contest winner will be announced on the evening of Fri Sep 6 during the final First Friday celebration of 2013. If you would simply like for your digital photos to appear on shophaddonfieldnj.com or Facebook, then e-mail them to infocenter@haddonfieldnj.org. More good news: Indulgence Cupcakery – located steps from the Haddy sculpture at 43 Kings Hwy E – is sweetening the deal by awarding free dinosaur cupcakes to those who visit the shop with their decorated Flat Haddy on Wednesdays and Thursdays thru Aug 29. Limit: One free cupcake per artist during the contest period. Unveiled in October of 2003, Haddy was created by renowned sculptor John Giannotti, a Haddonfield resident. It is intended to celebrate the discovery of the world’s first nearly complete dinosaur skeleton in Haddonfield in 1858. Happy coloring! shophaddonfieldnj.com

Fortnightly happenings

 The September meeting of Evening Membership Department of the Haddon Fortnightly (EMD) will be held at the clubhouse on Tue Sep 10 from 7:30 to 9pm. During the meeting, student Jillian Armstrong will discuss her recent experience at the Girls’ Career Institute (GCI). GCI, a program held each June at Douglass College on the campus of Rutgers University, is designed to broaden the horizons of high school juniors. Each year, the Fortnightly sponsors several career-minded students who wish to attend. The students typically return from the conference with interesting – and sometimes humorous – stories to share with the club. Refreshments will be served following the meeting. The EMD is always looking for new members; September is the perfect time to see what the club is all about! The club sponsors fun and informative meetings, fundraisers for charity, and community activities. The Fortnightly Clubhouse is located at the corner of Kings Hwy E and Grove Street. For more information e-mail bojomo58@verizon.net.

 September seems to make people nostalgic. Maybe it’s the kids heading back to school, the cooler temperatures, or the realization that the holiday season is around the corner. The Ankoakas Region of the Antique Automobile Club of America invites us to revel in nostalgia each September during its Haddonfield Antique Auto Show. This year, the extravaganza will be held on Sat Sep 21. Car enthusiasts will surely appreciate the array of meticulously restored antique collectible and special- interest automobiles. Cars will line Kings Hwy, from the Speedline overpass to Haddon Ave. Don’t miss the fun, food, and music! The Car Show, now in its 27th year, always features a wide-range of stock automobiles – from roadsters dating back to the early 1900’s to modern-day marvels. Stay tuned to What’s On for further details, or call 216-7253 or e-mail infocenter@ haddonfieldnj.org.

Don your flip flops for Jeannie

A gun in the home is 11 times more likely to be used in a completed or attempted suicide than to be used in a self-defense shooting.

Auto,

Homeowners, CommerCiAl,

 A new team has formed in Haddonfield: Team Jeannie. Recently, resident Jeannie O’Pella fell at home while wearing flip flops. She was taken to the hospital for a routine exam. After extensive medical testing, it was determined that O’Pella has breast cancer. Team Jeannie sees her spill as a blessing in disguise, since it helped doctors uncover a silent disease. When she was told of her condition, O’Pella’s exact words were “We got this!” – a phrase which has become her team’s motto. To help Jeannie O’Pella get back on her feet, Team Jeannie is seeking $10 donations. In return for donations, supporters will be issued a pair of The Fighting Flip Flops. Visit teamjeannie.com for details.

Plant a tree for the Tricentennial

 During the spring the Haddonfield Shade Tree Commission announced its Tricentennial Tree Sale, an opportunity to purchase ornamental and shade trees for planting in the home garden or donating for streetside or public park plantings. The tree sale will continue thru mid-September; it will culminate on Sat Oct 5, Tricentennial Tree Day. On Tree Day a community tree planting and celebration will take place. The Shade Tree Commission has selected 15 trees – of various shapes and sizes – which are suitable for various growing conditions. Planting a tree is an ideal way to commemorate a family event or simply enhance the beauty of a yard. While the Tricentennial Tree Program is not intended to replace Haddonfield’s planting initiatives, it will provide an opportunity to supplement the shade tree plantings at a time when the borough’s focus is on the removal of blight-stricken red oak and pin oak trees. Trees offered through this promotion will prepped, pruned, and labeled as Tricentennial Trees. Donated trees are tax-deductible and will be planed by trained teams. Trees purchased for private property will be ready for pick-up and planting on or before Sat Oct 5. Trees are priced at $125 each. A limited selection of premium trees are priced at $350. All participants will be honored in print and online for their support. Records of this event will be presented to the Historical Society of Haddonfield for posterity. So far, more than 40 trees have been purchased. Volunteers are being recruited for the treeplanting effort. To learn more, visit haddonfieldnj.org/borough_ boards-shade.php.
