LOCAL EVENTS

NATIONAL FOREST WALKING FESTIVAL Now in its 12th year, the National Forest Walking Festival 2019 is an opportunity to lace up your boots and join the knowledgeable festival walk leaders as they help you to explore in and around 200 square miles of the National Forest. The festival runs from Saturday 18th through to Thursday 30th May with a programme of guided and themed walks and activities for all ages and abilities. Discover historic towns and villages, enjoy wonderful countryside and learn more about the area’s rich and varied history. This year they have nearly 100 walks for you to choose from, plus a whole range of walking-related activities to keep you striding out in the Forest all year round. The walks cover distances from one to fourteen miles and cater for wheelchairs, pushchairs, health walkers and ramblers. New for this year there are also specialist photography walks and activities such as orienteering, geocaching and map-reading. The creation of the National Forest has opened up more than three times the amount of land than was previously available for us all to explore and enjoy. It’s the boldest environmentally-led regeneration project in the country. With a variety of partners, there have been more than 8.7 million trees planted over the last 27 years, and the aim is to reach 10 million trees!

10

You can support the project through a donation that will help create and look after the Forest and you can help plant more trees. Through the ‘Plant a Tree’ scheme, you’re invited to plant a tree to remember a loved one or celebrate a happy life event. You can also ‘Dedicate a Tree’ online, where the team plant the tree for you. In either case you receive a personalised certificate with your own message and choice of design. You can also volunteer your time to help at Timber festival, or help manage woodlands or maintain walking routes through the Forest. Walking in the National Forest is a year round pleasure so don’t feel the Festival is your only chance to enjoy the area. As well as all the guided walks during the Festival there are many regular organised local walks you can join throughout the year, or you can grab a map or pick up a leaflet, go outside and explore on your own. Each step in the National Forest can take you somewhere completely different. Follow gentle trails through vibrant young woodlands and nature-rich ancient forests. Discover more about the area’s heritage or let a canal towpath take you to the nearest pub lunch. For more information about the festival you can visit www.thenationalforestwalkingfestival.org.uk or call Swadlincote Tourist Information Centre on 01283 222848. ARE YOU FED UP WITH CLUTTER? Have you ever looked around your home and thought “’arghhh we could do with more space?” or are you about to have a tidy up but don’t want to throw everything out? Well, the answer could be to make more use of the space you’ve already got, literally under your own roof.

F

or many home owners, the loft is an underutilised area because it can be difficult and dangerous to reach. Stafford based loft ladder installer, Access4Lofts, whose slogan is ‘creating space the easy way’ can change all that, often in less than a day. Access4Lofts Stafford is owned by Sam Whitworth. Much of the work he carries out is for growing families “ I know how crucial storage space can be for large families” says Sam.” I also find that a large percentage of my clients are retired people looking for the safest access to their loft available”.

Sam says that with space at such a premium, it makes sense to make the most of your loft “installing a loft ladder is quick and affordable. It’s less expensive than a garden shed and it means you don’t have to store everything out of the house”. Access4Lofts provides a free survey and quote service so you can find out what is achievable with your loft area. For the full works, customers can get a retractable 3-section ladder, a new hatch, a floating floor over the loft insulation and lighting. Some homeowners who perhaps inherited an old loft ladder, may want to consider an upgrade as in many homes the loft hatch and ladder are out of date compared to what’s on offer now “the new ladders are spring-assisted and lighter so they’re much easier to use” he says “the ladders can also come with a safety handrail and there is an option of wide-tread wooden steps. There’s really no need for anyone to be struggling in and out of the loft anymore.” Freeing up a room currently clogged with clutter 12

can save a lot of trouble and expense, as Sam explains “some people looking for more space consider moving to a bigger home but this needn’t be necessary. People are surprised by the amount of space a loft can create. We can put the boarding into the eaves to maximise the space and can also include shelving. Access4Lofts is an approved Which? Trusted trader which means they have been accessed by Which? and passed their stringent checks. For added confidence, Access4Lofts has full public liability insurance and all ladders come with a minimum five year guarantee.

To find out how Sam can create more space for you and your family or to book a free survey and quote, visit www.access4lofts.co.uk/stafford or give Sam a call on 01785 595146.

We are specialists in installing loft ladders and hatches for easy and safe access to your loft. We also provide boarding, lighting and insulation solutions. This ‘Spring Clean’ time we can help you turn your lost space into really useful loft space.

TIMBER FESTIVAL RETURNS Voted Best New Festival at the UK Festival Awards 2018, Timber returns in style to the National Forest in July. With a packed weekend of music and breath-taking performances, national, international and local artists, it will give us a new take on the landscape of the National Forest and inspirational ways for us all to reconnect to nature and make the most of the forest on our doorstep. Musiciaans Gwenno, Jesca Hoop and You Telll Me head the line-up, and UK stand-u up comedian and actor, Phill Jupitus, will share his Wilderness Tracks BC Radio 4’s Geoff Bird. with BB Lost in Translation will present a th hrilling circus show devised just for Timber. Based on Italo Calvino’s novel, The Baron in the Trees, the show includes amazing acrobatics, slapstick, juggling and aerial stunts. Leicester Comedy Festival adds riotous humour to the outdoor vibe with appearances by Alex Hylton, Carly Smallman, and Chris Washington (nominated for lastminute.com Edinburgh Comedy Award for Best Newcomer 2017, sell out show at Leicester Comedy Festival). Timber offers incredible immersive experiences throughout the weekend: stand under Dan Fox’s Shimmer, a freestanding installation providing 12 branches of sound and light; dance the evening away at the iconic Eyrie stage, with the best in live music and spoken word, including BBC Radio 6Music’s Elizabeth Alker and late night woodland DJs. Local singing group, The Coal Tits, fuse traditional ballads with their own interpretations of local characters, places, histories and traditions of the heart of the Forest.

Roots Community Choir present acapella renditions of English folk songs and vocal world music. At Timber they’ll create rich vocal arrangements inspired by the Noon Columns found close to the festival site. CircularityRise run an open mic showcase for young people in Burton upon Trent. At Timber they will acoustically ‘blow up the camp fire’, showcasing their performance skills hosted by Kirby, of The Voice fame. Seams, a new piece created for Timber 2019, will take the audience on a journey inspired by the evocative names and diagrams of the coal seams that surround Feanedock. Don your miner’s helmet and venture as if below ground, for a sound and light installation through dark stony bind, and nether coal, before emerging into a brave new world, viewing the festival site in a whole new light. Locally-sourced food and drink, inspiring health and well-being activities, engaging woodland crafts and games all feature in a packed programme that will help bring Timber festival-goers closer to trees and nature.

IN YOUR GARDEN

HANGING BASKETS

Gardens are blooming and you are no doubt bursting to be creative in the garden, so here’s the plan - plant up a hanging basket or two. It’s easy, doesn’t take very long and yo ou will be rewarded for weeks after with cheery plants. First of all choose your basket. Even an old bassket will probably do as the basket itself can be hidden n with trailing plants. I actually like the wire baskets which start at about £5. You can buy a readymade lin ner but I have found that lining it with moss from the laawn (or even grass cuttings) gives a more natural effecct. Pack this so that your lining is 1.5 to 2cm thickk. The moss or grass cuttings will then require an inn ner liner of plastic, perforated with small holes for drain nage. One of the most important things is to have a basket that will retain some water. The best way to do o this is to put an old saucer or plant pot tray in the bo ottom before you put the soil in. This will stop all the water flooding out as soon as you water it and keep the soil moist. Similarly it is worth mixing water retaining granules or gel into the compost. The granules will absorb water and allow the water to be slowly released. Fill the basket about half full with compost. I suggest

By local garden designer, Francesca Sinclair For bespoke contemporary and traditional garden design www.francescasinclair.co.uk – 07901 547 360 a multi-purpose or John Innes No 2. If you have a wire basket I recommend carefully making small holes in the lining for the heads of training plants to be gently pushed through. Do this just above half the depth of the basket. In the centre of the basket I usually put an upright plant for structure such as a zonal geranium. The plants around that central plant can be of a trailing variety. Pack in as many as you can and then carefully firm in and fill with compost to about 1 cm below the rim of the basket. Some slow release fertiliser plugs are good to push in at this stage. The most important thing is to water your basket at least once a day. In exposed windy or sunny positions water twice a day. The garden centres are full of plants for baskets so the choice is yours. Consider the different colours and how well they go – you may want vibrant reds, purples, yellows and oranges together or a more subtle combination of light pinks blues and whites may be more your style. I always use geraniums in baskets as they flower so profusely and they are very forgiving if you go away for a few days and don’t have anyone to water for you. Other plants that flower generously are pansies and lobelias.

NATIONAL GARDEN SCHEME

THE NATIONAL GARDEN SCHEME The National Garden Scheme Leicestershire Gardens opens in May. The National Garden Scheme is a charity and in 2018 we donated £3.1 million to various charities including £500,000 to Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie and Hospice UK. Donations were also made to Horatio’s Garden, Mind and many other charities. This money is raised by volunteers who open their gardens for a small admission fee and from the sale of tea and homemade cake. In May, there are 42 gardens open in Leicestershire and Derbyshire, full details including opening times, directions and post codes can be found at www. ngs.org.uk/find-a-garden/ Many gardens are dog friendly, there are no admission charges for children, some gardens have wheelchair access and plant sales on site. In the areas surrounding Ashby de la Zouch, Ibstock and Melbourne there are many gardens to enjoy. In Ashby de la Zouch the Bluebell Arboretum and Nursery opens which has 9 acres of beautiful woodland. In May the trees will be filled with fresh green foliage, blossom and much birdsong to enjoy.

There are British native tre ees and many rare and unusu ual non-native species. In Loughborough Whatto on Gardens opens its 15 acre garden an ideall gard den for a day out with space for all the family to enjoy. There are lawned areas, mature trees and shrubs, large herbaceous borders in bloom and an ornamental pond. Also in Loughborough 10 Brook Road opens which has a 1 acre mature garden with an abundance of rhododendrons, azaleas and Japanese maples promising plenty of colour for their May opening. There are also colourful borders, a stream and clay lined pond, with seating areas dotted around the garden. One of the larger gardens, Melbourne Hall has 17 acres for visitors to enjoy, including woodlands, waterside planting and attractive herbaceous borders. It also features some 300 year old trees and 18th century statuary. Repton village has an open day with 6 different gardens to view. 16 Askew Road has been inspired by a Persian influence with terraces and a central fountain. A restricted palate of green and white planting creates a peaceful garden. Askew Cottage has many connected areas, including a box-edged perennial garden, a cloud hedge and wildlife pond. 10 Chestnut way is a plant paradise, with overflowing flower borders full of colour and butterfly friendly plants. There is also a large organic fruit and vegetable garden. 22 Pinfold cottage has unusual tropical plants such as ginger and cannas, and there are also 20 allotments on view, together with a Community Garden open on the edge of Repton village. The final garden in the group, Woodend cottage, has herbaceous borders, a pond, grassed labyrinth, a mixed woodland area and a Potager. These are just a few of the many gardens opening in the area in May to raise funds for nursing and cancer charities. All gardens have modest entrance fees, excellent homemade cake plus a warm and friendly welcome. Make sure to visit a garden local to you. See www.ngs.org.uk for more information.

Century Theatre drama, music, comedy and more Wednesday 8th May 7.30pm TEAM VIKING – £10

Five years ago, James’s best friend Tom was diagnosed with heart cancer and given three months to live. His last wish was to be given a full Viking burial. This is the remarkable, hilarious, heart-lifting and outlandish story of how James actually gave his best mate the send-off he wanted. Featuring live music, side-splitting anecdotes and even an actual Viking helmet, James Rowland’s Team Viking – a comic ode to death and friendship – now embarks on a UK tour with Tangram Theatre.

Saturday 11th May 7.30pm COAL AND CANALS – £10

A superb multimedia show performed by the five piece Zouch Band including original film, narration and song documenting the intertwined history and heritage of the coal and canals industries, the joint bedrocks of The Industrial Revolution. Brian Langtry, well-known local playwright and producer, brings another historically important piece of theatre to local audiences.

16th, 17th & 18th May 7.30pm (18th May 2pm)

BEDROOM FARCE – £12

The play, set in the 1970s, sees 4 couples during the evening of Kate and Malcolm’s house warming party. All of the couples have their own issues, but none more than Trevor and Susannah who spend the evening drawing everyone else into their hilariously dysfunctional relationship. Kate loses her clothes, Jan gets stuck under Nick, Delia does her best to get two words out of her husband Earnest and poor Malcolm still isn’t any good at DIY. A real look at 70s British values through the eyes of today.

HEALTH AND FITNESS ADVICE

IMPROVE YOUR HEALTH AND FITNESS AND RAISE MONEY FOR LOROS Everyone who lives in Leicestershire knows someone who has been touched by the overwhelming help and support LOROS give. Both my mum and dad had fantastic care & support from LOROS when they were diagnosed with cancer. The care they received was outstanding. The staff, from consultants and nurses, to housekeeping, and kitchen were all fabulous. Although my mum never stayed on the ward, she was able to have outpatient appointments there. When she was too ill to attend her appointment, a LOROS consultant did a home visit instead. Dad was lucky enough to have a few stays in LOROS, he even commented how it was like a 5 star hotel, especially as he could have his favourite tipple of whiskey with his lunch and at night! I am so grateful to LOROS that I have been motivated, together with my gym clients, to raise over £64,000 in the years since my parents passed. We have all been able to improve our health and fitness whilst raising money for LOROS during our annual Gym Fitness Challenges.

40

This year’s event takes place on Sunday 12th May from 9am through to 5pm. It’s looking bigger than ever, with over 40 people taking part so far and for the first time we are holding a well-being afternoon. As always 100% of monies raised go to LOROS! We would welcome anyone who might like to take part, make a donation, provide raffle prizes, bake a cake or just turn up on the day. Thank you LOROS for everything you do, it is a privilege to help you in any way we can!

Join our officers and a network of people who share information about crimes in rural areas, and help to reduce opportunities for crime to take place. Together we can actively take steps to prevent crime. To become a member of the scheme please email your name, address and contact details to rural.watch@leicestershire.pnn. police.uk

THE CONSERVATION VOLUNTEERS April showers bring May flowers –what nicer time of year could there be for being out in the nature reserves and open spaces of the National Forest?

If this young bramble is not removed, in a couple of years the wild flowers will be swamped!

TCV will be round and about this month helping at sites across the Forest. Among other things we will be returning to wildflower meadows we have planted to make sure that the target wildlife-friendly plants are growing, and not just nettles and brambles. NETTLES AND BRAMBLES – FRIENDS OR FOES? We humans have a love-hate relationship with nettles and brambles. Blackberry picking, and the resulting blackberry and apple crumbles, form happy childhood memories for many, but who has not been badly scratched? You may struggle to be positive about stinging nettles, but did you know they were deliberately imported in Roman times as a fibre producing plant for clothing and ropes, or that they taste wonderful as a Spring tonic in soups? The wildlife value of both plants cannot be ignored. Nettles are caterpillar food for some of our best loved butterfly species, which might become extinct without them. Brambles form an important safe nesting site for birds, and feed a multitude of species from voles to moths with their flowers and berries.

Although brambles and nettles are wonderful for wildlife, they can be very invasive and take over an area, leading to loss of biodiversity. We therefore try to keep them in check at the sites we work on, carefully checking for any nesting birds before cutting back and leaving well alone if nesting sites are spotted. If you would like to join us and try something new, contact kay.thompson@tcv.org.uk

BOOK REVIEWS

A LIFE LIKE NO OTHER

Take a trip into another time and another life. Or stay in your own life and be inspired by ideas of self-improvement. This month’s reads will certainly make you pause to reflect. The Familiars Stacey Halls 1612 is a dangerous time to be a woman in Northern England, as King James has declared war on witches. Fleetwood is 17 and pregnant for the fourth time. Her other pregnancies ended in miscarriage. Desperate not to miscarry this child or lose her own life in childbirth, she turns to a local midwife, Alice Grey. When Alice gets accused of witchcraft, Fleetwood has to decide how far she’ll go to save her friend. Loosely based on the Pendle witch trials, this is a gripping, atmospheric page-turner.

The Honey Bus Meredith May With a depressed single mother who could barely get out of bed, Meredith relied on her grandfather for love and solace. She also found another avenue for learning life’s lessons – her grandfather’s bees. Through the hive, Meredith learned about family, loyalty, self-sacrifice and resilience. A thought-provoking memoir.

Louis & Louise Julie Cohen A baby is born in 1970s Maine, USA. In one reality she’s a girl – Louise; in the other, a boy – Louis. Both have the same friends, the same interests and the same ambitions. Both flee from their hometown after one fateful night that changes everything. Original, thought-provoking and highly enjoyable, Louis & Louise is perfect for book clubs.

Voices of Powerful Women Zoe Sallis When Maya Angelou calls something a ‘fascinating collection’, you know you’re in for a treat and Voices of Powerful Women certainly doesn’t disappoint. Zoe Sallis interviewed 40 women for her book, including Judi Dench, Tracey Emin, Benazir Bhutto and Mariane Pearl. Each one gives us a glimpse into what made her who she is today. You’ll learn what inspires these women, what angers them, who they admire and what advice they want to pass on to the next generation.

The Energy Plan James Collins Nutritionist James Collins is a world leader in the field of performance nutrition. He’s guided the eating habits of Olympic athletes and sports stars. His first book, The Energy Plan, is not about cutting out food groups, quick fix diets or denial. Instead, it’s about fuelling your body so it performs better and you feel fitter, have more energy and can fight off illnesses. The Energy Plan is well worth a read, whether you’re training for a marathon or just want to avoid the 3pm energy slump.

Micro Living Derek ‘Deek’ Diedricksen This book takes the concept of downsizing to the extreme. Many of the 40 homes featured are smaller than 150 square feet. From a refurbished Airstream to a treehouse, what these homes lack in space, they more than make up for in character. The book includes floorplans, advice and lots of lust-worthy photographs. Whether you’re thinking of building your own tiny home, want some tips to make the most of smaller rooms or just fancy taking a peek into how other people live, Micro Living is for you.
