TENNIS AND GOLFERS ELBOW Two ‘overuse’ in njuries we see regularly here at ProPhysio arre tennis & golfers elbow - also known as laterral and medial epicondylitis respectively. This refers to thee painful tendon irritation at the bony attachmen nt on the outside (tennis) or the inside of the elb bow (golfers) Tennis elbow is by far the most common and can be very deb bilitating and painful. The forearm mu uscles required for finger and wrist activitties anchor at the bony prominences on n either side of the elbow. Avoiding tennis/golfers elbow can be achieved by: • Playing the sport that aggravates the injury with correct techniques. In the case of tennis or golf, having training lessons can be helpful.

Firstly, it’s wise to change your movement patterns in your life that have provoked the condition and rest the injured arm. The use of ice for 10 minutes several times a day can be beneficial with pain relief.

• Ensure your keyboard is set up optimised with wrist support pads and an ergonomically shaped mouse.

The wearing of a support can also help and there are several on the market. They will compress the injured tissue and protect it to assist with healing.

• Use the correct tools at work such as a cordless screwdriver. It will take the strain off your forearm muscles.

Physiotherapy can be very beneficial and manual therapy such as massage and exercises to stretch/ strengthen the damaged tendons often helps. They can also help with advice tailored to your specific circumstances.

• Avoid lifting activities with the back of hand facing upwards. Try to have your wrist in a neutral position with thumb pointing upwards. • Take breaks during activity and listen to your body telling you that you are overloading your muscles. Tennis and golfers elbow with time usually gets 6

With chronic conditions Shock Wave Therapy is often effective. This stimulates the healing process and is available in ProPhysio in Ashby. Give us a call on 01530 588557 to find out more or see www.prophysiomidlands.co.uk

LEAP INTO SPRING AT CALKE ABBEY THIS EASTER It’s that glorious time of year again, when the sun begins to shine and the smell of fresh flowers fills the air. Whether you want to take the family for an outdoor adventure or escape the crowds this Easter, there are lots of ways to enjoy the best that spring has to offer at Calke Abbey. Get crafty this Easter in the Riding School, which is packed with nature-themed activities to get those creative cogs working (Monday 15th to Friday 26th April, 11am–4pm). Calke’s family activity area, Squirt’s Stable, is also open for the entire school holidays (Monday 8th to Friday 26th April, 10.30am–4pm) – it’s a great way to escape those Cadbury Egg Hunt crowds. If you’re ready to stretch your legs and get a breath of fresh air, Calke Abbey is nestled among 600 acres of historic parkland, just waiting to be explored. Pick up a park map when you arrive to discover a range of walking trails, or download a spring walk from the Calke Abbey website. For families, the Tramway Trail provides a fairly flat, circular route – perfect for exploring on two wheels.

HEALTH AND FITNESS ADVICE

WHICH IS THE HEAVIEST? FAT OR MUSCLE? The question that people ask the most is which one is the heaviest, fat or muscle? Can fat turn into muscle or muscle turn into fat? The fact is they both weigh exactly the same but muscle is denser than fat (see picture opposite) therefore occupying less space than fat. This is the reason why you could get 2 people weighing the same, one of them is really lean and muscular while the other one looks overweight and out of condition. It is really common for people, on exercise and weight reduction programs, to see no great difference on the scales but to observe significant differences in the way they look and the way their clothes fit, this is because the composition of their bodies have changed. All this highlights the importance of including weight training in your weight management plans. The other great benefit of having more muscle than fat is that it speeds up your resting metabolic rate, in other words your body will burn up more calories whilst resting. As for one turning in to the other, this is not possible as they are 2 completely different ‘tissues.’ As your body

increases it’s muscle mass there is likely to be a decrease in body fat as it would ‘get burnt’ more effectively. If you then decided not to exercise and then overeat, your muscle mass would decrease and body fat would increase. Make sure you always include weight training in your exercise regime! LOCAL COMMUNITY NEWS

IBSTOCK COMMUNITY LIBRARY LAUNCH Five years ago the County Council consulted with the public to close 36 of the smallest Leicestershire libraries and asked community groups to come forward and take over the running of them as a partnership with the council, run just with volunteers. They said that traditional library use was declining because of e-books and the Internet. After public meetings, workshops, articles in local newspapers and a petition handed in to County Hall, Ibstock Library closed in April 2016. Since then, a small group of wonderful volunteers have been fighting to get a community libray set up. It is only thanks to them and Ibstock Junior School that we have finally succeeded. After three failed attempts, Ibstock Community Library will be opening its doors with an opening event on Saturday 6th April 10am-2pm in it’s new home, the junior school mobile, off Melbourne Road, Ibstock. Rachel Greaves a local author will be “cutting the ribbon”

24

for us. There will be story time, stalls and a colouring competition. Almost all of the 36 libraries that closed have been reopened by community groups, which goes to show how important libraries are to everyone. Thank you very much for our volunteers for having so much patience and perseverance for so many years. For more information call 07470 148718 or email ibstockcommunitylibrary@yahoo.co.uk

LOCAL COMMUNITY NEWS

COLEORTON AND NEW LOUNT VOLUNTEER GROUP The Coleorton and New Lount Volunteer Group was formed back in October 2010 to assist with the management of two local nature reserves; Coleorton Wood and New Lount Nature Reserve. Since their formation the group has been extremely successful in helping to manage the range of habitats that exist across the two sites. As a result of all the work put in by the volunteers over the last eight years the two sites have seen positive improvements to both the natural history and the recreational facilities.

hedge laying, access improvement and wildflower meadow management. So whatever your skills, it iss likelyy that the group can make good use of them. If you have an interest in conserving your local environment please contact them at coleorton11@gmail.com or call 01530 223 456. The Coleorton & New Lount Volunteer Group are also holding two fundraising plant sales in May. The plant sales are an important part of the group’s fundraising events each year. They also help the group to achieve one of their key objectives of working with local communities. The group would love to see as many local people attending these two events and would very much appreciate any donations of plants, etc. which they may be able to sell. The plant sales will take place on Saturday 4th May at Coleorton Wood, Pitt Lane (off the Moor), LE67 8FS, and on Saturday 18th May at New Lount Nature Reserve, Newbold Coleorton LE67 8JH from 10am to 1pm.

The group is supported by Leicestershire County Council Parks Department and Coleorton Parish Council (who own Coleorton Wood). As you may have seen on our Community Board recently, the group meet on a regular basis; four times a month. This consists of two work sessions at each site; two of which are on Tuesdays and two on Saturdays. The work sessions are from 10.00am to 2pm with a refreshment break around 12.30pm. Full details can be found on their website cnlvg.weebly.com/ They are always looking to welcome on board additional members and it’s a fantastic way to learn new skills, make new friends, burn off some calories and enjoy the great outdoors. The work is mainly manual outdoor work predominantly using hand tools, although they do have powered tools and a number of volunteers trained to use them. Volunteers can become involved in a range of practical tasks, such as pond clearing, tree planting, woodland management, ecological surveying, 44

ON THE BEAT

HOW TO DEAL WITH COLD CALLERS Recently in the area the police have responded to calls from residents about answering their door to cold callers, and being drawn into handing over bank details or large amounts of cash. Cold calling is the solicitation of business from potential customers who have had no prior contact with the salesperson conducting the call. It is an attempt to convince potential customers to purchase either the salesperson’s product or service The offenders are purporting to complete work for the residents, recently cleaning houses has been used, gaining access to the house to see their lifestyle and stealing items once inside. We have also had reports that the offenders are pretending to be the police, they will talk to the residents about stolen bank cards that the ‘police’ have managed to recover. This is a scam. The offenders are from all over the country and will target any area. Offenders have shown police

equipment and can use language thaat sounds like the police. They offer to help by taking residents to the bank and maanage to obtain the real bank details. These reports are obviously concerning for us which is why we feel it is important to make local residents aware and be cautious to this type of crime. The general advice for residents who receive cold callers is to be cautious at all times and keep windows and doors locked, even when just popping out. Ensure the back door is locked before answering the front door so that no one can access the house while you are distracted. If you have a door chain – use it - and always check for ID if a stranger wants to come in and claims they are from a utility company, local authority, police or any other organisation. If you receive a telephone cold call, stay calm and don’t let the caller intimidate you or pressure you with ‘one-day-only’ offers. Never reveal your name, address or financial details. If it’s a legitimate call from a company you’re interested in or are already a customer of, you can always call the company directly. If you suspect a scam, don’t press any phone buttons during the call. This could redirect you to a premiumrate number which you will be charged for. Genuine callers will happily show their ID. Check the ID carefully and call the head office if you are still unsure, but use a number from the telephone directory or a recent bill, not the one on the card they give out. Only allow someone into your home if you are absolutely certain they are genuine and never hand your bank card or large amounts of cash over. THE CONSERVATION VOLUNTEERS

SPRING IS SPRUNG, THE GRASS IS RIZ….. … and since we do actually know where the birdies is, The Conservation Volunteers are not to be found hedgelaying or thinning the new woodlands of the National Forest any longer! At this time of year, we leave the hedges and woodlands for the happy bird couples to build their nests in. This is both wildlife friendly and a legal requirement – did you know it is against the law to disturb nesting birds? Be they sparrows, magpies or golden eagles, people may not interfere with their nesting sites. While we are carrying out our conservation work, there is often potential for us to disturb or annoy wildlife. When you are working towards the bigger picture, it is easy to momentarily forget the individual – which is why our group has a voluntary Wildlife Officer. Phil, a long-term volunteer, is tasked with keeping an eye on the interests of wild creatures as we are working, and making sure that (for instance) long grass is checked for snoozing hedgehogs before we cut it down.

Working by hand helps, too. For example, at Thornton church a couple of years ago, we took a tumbledown dry stone wall down by hand, prior to building it again. Had the dismantling been done by a digger, a great many frogs and toads would have been crushed. As it was, they were brought to safety in the careful hands of our volunteer team! If you would like to join us and try something new, contact kay.thompson@tcv.org.uk

IN YOUR GARDEN

MAZES A garden maze is a web of lines leading to a centre usually with walls made from hedges. Traditionally there would be a reward at the heart of a maze, such as a seat or water fountain, sun-dial or statue. Mazes first became popular in Italy in the 16th century, and generally were for entertainment and the ability to encourage walking within a confined space. Usually maze paths are made from wood-chip, sand, gravel or stone and the walls from yew, juniper, lime, box, privet or laurel. Maze characteristics include multiple paths creating a puzzle with various choices of direction and several dead ends. It also has several ways in and out. This contrasts with a labyrinth which has only a single route, one entrance and one exit with a non branching path. In Greek mythology the Labyrinth was a structure to hold a Minotaur (monster). In Northumberland there is a ‘minotaur maze’ made up of high walls of gabions filled with rocks. This sits in the grounds of Kielder Castle. England’s oldest hedge maze is at Hampton Court.

By local garden designer, Francesca Sinclair For bespoke contemporary and traditional garden design www.francescasinclair.co.uk – 07901 547 360 This was planted in the 17th century. Since then the hornbeam trees have been replaced with holly and yew. Another old maze is at Longleat House in Wiltshire, and the hedge maze there is the longest in the world. It has 1.7 miles of pathways and six bridges from which you can survey the maze at various points and figure the way out! At Longleat hedges are built from yew, meticulously clipped, and are an exquisite piece of living art, made up of over 16,000 trees. It is said to take 20 to 90 minutes to navigate depending on how lost you might get. The National Trust has a number of properties with mazes you may wish to visit too. These include Belton House in Lincolnshire which was originally planted in 1890 but was actually remade in 2000. Cliveden in Buckinghamshire is a good one, but beware it is quite disorientating as the yew hedges are 2 meters high. Less daunting in the National Trust collection is the pavement maze in Greys Court in Oxfordshire. Hever Castle in Kent is interesting as it has a water maze as well as an Edwardian yew maze. The water maze includes stepping stones in water and areas where you’ll be splashed as you head towards the centre. In recent years temporary mazes have popped up, made from the crop maize. Locally, Wistow Maze at Kibworth Road Leicestershire near Market Harborough has had such an event, which this year reopens again in July. It looks to be good fun for children with quiz trails and 3 miles of paths. There is an official Maize Association which you can look at to find out more www.maize-maze.com.

Green Thumb’s Top Tips for The

Perfect Spring Lawn

Spring: the season of awakening and new life, the blooming of fresh buds and re-emerging beautiful colour. It can be a truly inspiring time that is invigorating to the senses. Preparing your garden to spend more time in it with family and friends requires a little effort, but the results can be a gorgeous green space to be proud of. GreenThumb Lawn Treatment Service share their expert advice to help you get the very best from your lawn over the spring months and prepare it for the transition into summer.

The amount of lawnmowing required now winter is over will naturally increase; GreenThumb recommends implementing a good, regular mowing programme. Dry, sunny days are the best conditions for lawnmowing. It’s important that mower blades are kept sharp or replaced when needed, to avoid causing damage to the grass plant. Also, cutting the grass too short, too soon will weaken the grass which will attract unwanted weeds and moss. If possible, it is best for a lawn to be cut at least once a week, to a height of about 50mm (2”). A little maintenance in the form of consistent mowing will help train the grass to be stronger over time. Another way to help a lawn through spring is to rake up any dead leaves and twigs from the lawn and cut back overhanging shrubs and plants; this is because grass needs as much direct sunlight and air as possible to stay healthy and green. As the ground starts to warm, it’s a good time to repair bare patches that can appear over winter. To do so, carefully rake the patch to create a bed, sow the seeds with a little top-soil and don’t let them dry out; they will germinate in a few days (temperature permitting). GreenThumb can assist in this regard, as they have the best seed and an excellent 100% organic top-dressing. GreenThumb treatments are tailored with the greatest care for the UK’s lawns: they have the solution to transform any piece of grass, whatever the size or condition - into a healthy, fresh and beautiful lawn. Call 01530 244552 or email ashby@greenthumb. co.uk for more expert help and advice on maintaining your lawns.

PETS’ CORNER

BUYING A HAMSTER Although a relatively ‘low-profile’ pet compared with cats and dogs, hamsters need lots of loving care and attention. They typically live for two or three years so are a long-term responsibility, but they bring lots of fun into your home and can make great first pets. If you’re thinking of buying a hamster, here’s a little information that might help them settle in. Characteristics With 24 different types of hamster you won’t be short of choice, but Syrian (or golden) and dwarf hamsters are among the most popular. Adults of the golden variety need to be kept alone as they’re inclined to fight, as are males of the dwarf hamster variety, so all-female groups are best. Diet Pre-prepared hamster mix is a good choice of staple diet and should be supplemented with small amounts of fruit and vegetables. Hamsters need to grind down their teeth regularly as they grow

continually, so providing them with crunchy snacks or small chew toys can help to keep their teeth short. Play Hamsters love to play and can be quite adventurous, so a cage with different levels is ideal. You can add plastic toys for entertainment, and tunnels for them to run through. A hamster’s needs are quite complex, but by being aware of their behaviour and characteristics as well as eating and playing habits, you’ll be able to meet their requirements with confidence and enjoy their company as part of the family.

BOOK REVIEWS

Scribe to Screen

Don’t miss out on reading the novel of these TV and film adaptions. Big Little Lies Liane Moriarty Series two of Big Little Lies is due this June. If you haven’t yet read the book that the first series was based on, now’s the time. It follows three mothers in the run up to a murder investigation. Madeline is fiercely loyal, impetuous and prone to holding a grudge. Celeste is stunningly beautiful but her perfect home life isn’t all it seems. The youngest of the three, Jane, is struggling with a secret from her past. As the three women become closer, a rift grows between the trio and the rest of the kindergarten parents. But is it really big enough to lead to murder? A wry, witty portrayal of modern life. Bird Box Josh Malerman Malorie is taking the children on a journey down the river. They will all need blindfolds, because even a glimpse at what waits outside could kill them. ‘Boy’ and ‘girl’ have never seen a tree or the sky, but at four years old they’re trained to listen very, very carefully, because it’s not just monsters that can kill you. This atmospheric thriller was a hit on Netflix and the book is even better. Expect a tense, rollercoaster of a ride. Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine Gail Honeyman Eleanor has an ordinary job, in an ordinary town. But to her colleagues, Eleanor herself is decidedly odd. When she inadvertently helps an acquaintance to rescue an elderly man, Eleanor discovers there may be more to life than just existing. A beautiful book about the importance of human connections. The film is currently in development, starring Reese Witherspoon as Eleanor.

58

The Knife of Never Letting Go Patrick Ness In Prentisstown it’s never quiet. The thoughts of men and animals crowd you wherever you walk. But then Todd finds a patch of silence, where the thoughts of others can’t penetrate, and discovers that everything he believes to be true may be a lie. The Knife of Never Letting Go is the first book in a series. The film adaptation, Chaos Walking, hit cinemas last month. The Woman in the Window A. J. Finn Dr Anna Fox is agoraphobic and lives alone. She spends her days watching films, talking to people online and spying on the neighbours. She also drinks a lot of wine and is rather slapdash with her medications. So when she thinks she’s witnessed a serious crime, how can she make people believe her? And can she really trust her own judgement? A slowburning thriller. Read it before the film comes out this autumn. Where’d You Go, Bernadette Maria Semple Renowned architect and eccentric Bernadette has disappeared and it seems it’s up to her 14 year old daughter, Bee, to figure out what happened. Bee’s journey will take her all the way to Antarctica. An amusing read told through emails, letters, phone transcriptions and official reports. The film stars Cate Blanchett and Kristen Wiig.

Why not save 18% with our Enhanced Programme?

Your first choice for lawn care 2018 was a difficult year for your garden. Extreme weather conditions resulted in lawns that didn’t look their best. As we move towards the growing season, now is the time to start preparing your lawn to get the most from it. Our seasonal treatments start from just £5 per month*. Due to high demand, and to avoid disappointment, we advise that you

book your treatments early. If you think your lawn is beyond repair due to last year’s sweltering summer, ask us about our Lawn Makeover - the best way to get ‘The GreenThumb lawn.’

For your FREE lawn analysis & no-obligation quote, contact your local branch today.
