Poverty Action Week from 21st January may inspire you to take on a challenge to support a local charity – we enjoyed the Leicestershire Three Peaks challenge we completed for Charity Link so much last year. DY MATTERS BOD

Heel Pain?

It cou uld be Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar Fasciitis can happen to anyone from an active runner to a worrker who is on their feet all day. The foot is a compleex structure of tissues, muscles and bones that can become damaged quite easily if not properly cared for. Underneath thee foot there is a band of thick fibrous tissue caalled the plantar fascia that attaches at the heel bone and extends the length of the instep and attaches near the toes. Its role is to help p lift the arch of th he foot and act as a sho ock absorber for the body when the foot impacts witth the ground. The plantar fascia can become inflamed and irritable near where it attaches at the heel bone. People are more at risk of developing Plantar Fasciitis if they:Are on their feet a lot and do lots of walking, running or standing when this is not normal for them. Start exercising on a dierent surface, usually a harder one, with less cushioning Have been wearing shoes with less cushioning or support Have gained weight Suddenly stretch the sole of the foot Have tight calf muscles or Achilles tendon The symptoms are usually pain beneath or above the heel when first getting up in the morning or after long periods of rest when first standing on the foot. It can be quite debilitating and is a miserable condition. Management First and foremost, look at your footwear. Try to wear shoes that are cushioned with support under your arches even when walking around the house. If you are a runner consider taking a break from training and obtain shoes from a reputable running shop with expertise in fitting the correct shoe

6

Place some cushioning insoles into your shoes, if they are inadequate, to help with shock absorption and arch support. Perform regular exercises to stretch out your calf and Achilles tendon. Massage and ice your heel using a round drinks bottle that has water in it and has been frozen in a freezer. Roll your instep and heel backwards and forwards over the bottle for 5 minutes 2 or 3 times a day. Take painkilling tablets/anti-inflammatories. These can be obtained from your pharmacist, but be careful with allergies or conditions that preclude you from taking these. Seek physiotherapy advice. We can help you with all of the above and have expertise in providing local treatment to further accelerate your recovery. Should your Plantar Fasciitis prove stubborn, we can now offer the latest in Shockwave Therapy which has been proven to be effective in treating this and similar conditions. ProPhysio is one of very few centres able to provide shockwave therapy in the Midlands. Darrin Morris, Senior Physiotherapist, ProPhysio Ashby Tel: 01530 588557

HEALTH AND FITNESS ADVICE

Health Related Fitness for the New Year Health Related Fitness is about improving the quality of your daily life by exercising and managing your lifestyle in a healthy way. If you exercise regularly and feel energised, positive, are changing shape and are coping with all that life throws at you, then it is likely that you are benefitting from the ‘health related’ effects of regular exercise. Enough exercise, so that you are committed and dedicated but not obsessed is the key! It is important to find the balance between work, rest and exercise. Most people work long hours and think they are too tired to exercise when the reality is that they would be far more energised if they can overcome their perceived 'tiredness,' turn up to their exercise session and just do it. Here are some, but not all, of the benefits of Health Related Fitness: • Reduced Stress Levels • Improved Stress Management • Improved Mobility • Improved Immune System - so less chance of illness • Reduced Blood Pressure • A More Positive Mental Outlook • Improved Coping Skills • Improved Weight Management

Give yourself the best chance possible to live a happy, positive, healthy and fulfilling life. Give yourself a better chance of coping and managing any illnesses and diseases life may throw at you. There are 168 hours in a week, it's no great sacrifice to give up 2-4 hours per week in order to do some ‘Health Related Exercise’.....

• Improved Energy Levels • Improved Management of Existing Health Issues

IN YOUR GARDEN

Ja nu ar y ga rden

The Bleeding Heart The Bleeding Heart is a plant which has outstanding heart shaped flowers that appear to be bleeding. It originates from China and plant collectors introduced it to the west from 1842 following a Treaty. Many plants were in fact smuggled out from China by plant collectors and most notably at this time one Robert Fortune would disguise himself as Chinese with a false black pigtail no less! China was at this point in time known then as the ‘central flowery land’. Dicentra is hardy, it grows in partial shade and sun, so despite its delicate and extraordinary flowers it is quite a common site in gardens. Flowering time is late spring and early summer. The flowers hang from graceful arching stems. These plants have brittle roots and do not like being disturbed so be sure to place these plants carefully initally so you don’t have to move them. Dicentra is a perennial, which means the flowers and leaves will come back each year. As you might imagine with such unusual and exquisitely shaped flowers there are various meanings associated with love and emotion. Most blooms are magenta pink or bright red and these flowers are said to represent a deep and passionate love. In china where the plant originates from it is said to represent spurned or rejected love. The white bleeding heart is also widely available and is said to be a symbol of purity and innocence. Another secret about this flower is that if you turn the flower upside down, the narrow petals take the form of a locket which is the source of other romantic names for this plant such as ‘lady –in –thebath’ and ‘lady locket’.

The flower actually consists of a flattish pair of pink outerr petals, each with a spur at its base (the two petals are the two o halves of the heart), with narrow inner petals projecting from between the halves. The botanic name, from the Greek, describes the flower as di (meaning ‘two’) and kendron (‘spur’). In Latin ‘spectablis’ means ‘remarkable’, which is what it is. The correct Latin name is Lamprocapnos spectablis but it is still widely known under its old name of Dicentra spectablis. Dicentra will grow in clay and heavy soil as well as well drained and light soil. The height is usually 60cm and the spread about 45cm. If you don’t have much room in your borders or you only have a courtyard or balcony then you can grow Dicentra perfectly well in a nice pot. Perhaps this plant would be a thought for Valentine’s Day.

THE CONSERVATION VOLUNTEERS Now Christmas is over, The Conservation Volunteers will be starting a season of hedge laying in The National Forest. This ancient skill involves cutting hedge plants halfway through and bending them over to form a barrier impenetrable to stock. Stakes, traditionally of hazel, support the plants to give strength, and a woven hazel top ties the whole thing together. A well laid hedge looks very smart, as you can see by the pictures. Traditionally hedges were laid to ensure the hedge stayed thick, to keep your cattle out of the neighbour’s field. Laying encourages plants to shoot from the base, which prolongs the life of the hedge. It was also a useful sustainable source of smaller firewood. Today hedges are laid for all these reasons, but for conservation too. A hedge which is trimmed every year with a tractor and flail will never produce much cover or food for wildlife. A hedge which is left to grow up for a time, and laid every, let us say, 15 years, will have periods where the hedge is tall and bushy,

18

full of berries and birds’ nests. Every 15 years the cycle will start again, preventing the hedge growing past this stage into old age and decay. The ideal situation is, of course, to lay hedges on a farm in sequence so wildlife cover is always there. If you would like to join us and try something new for free, contact kay.thompson@tcv.org.uk

IBSTOCK SURGERY NEWS

New Doctor

This month we’re pleased to welcome Dr Bhalla to the surgery. She’ll be working Tuesday and Wednesday for us.

Pre-book telephone appointments and order your medications online

Many patients ask about pre-booking appointments, and we can now give patients the option to pre-book a telephone consultation online. You can also order repeat medications online, really handy if you’re at work or busy with life and haven’t got time to drop in to the surgery or the chemist. To access this you need to: Fill in a form and bring it in to reception. The form is available from reception or to download from our website (www.ibstockhousesurgery.nhs.uk) on the SystmOnline tab on the right hand side. We need to ensure we’re giving access to the right person so please bring two forms of ID, one to be photo ID (passport or driving licence) and one with your address on, when you come to request it.

On the form you can choose to have your login details texted or emailed to you, or if you prefer you can come in and pick them up but for security reasons we would need to see photo ID again before we give them out. It’s really simple so don’t delay, download or pick up the form today!

POVERTY ACTION WEEK

Poverty Action Week 2019 Poverty Action Week takes place annually at the end of January, running from Monday 21st to Sunday 27th January this year.

clothing, beds, cookers, mobility equipment, grants for utilities and, in emergencies, food, for those in need. This amazing charity supports people of all ages and all backgrounds who find themselves in financial hardship, including elderly and disabled people, those with a chronic illness, the victims of domestic violence, those affected by mental health problems and working families struggling to make ends meet.

It was launched in 2015 by Charity Link to highlight the fact that many local people don’t have the very basics in life. In fact, there are thousands of people living in need locally, including around 30,000 children in Leicestershire and 21,000 children in Northamptonshire. Charity Link supports over 5,000 vulnerable individuals and families each year across Leicestershire, Rutland and Northamptonshire. They find funding to provide essential items, including

Two key events are planned to help raise money in this year’s Poverty Action Week:

Wear a Funky Scarf Day – Friday 25th January The concept is simple; donate an amount of your choice or gain sponsorship for wearing your scarf for the day and by doing so help to support local people in hardship or crisis. You can choose a well-worn multicoloured scarf that your mum knit for you years ago, a feather boa, an animal hat & scarf combo, cravat, head-scarf, shawl or stole, just make sure you get involved! Why not get your school, club

or place of work involved? Wear a Funky Scarf Day is great for fundraising in school and for discussing the issues of local hardship. It’s also a fantastic way for local businesses and their teams to show support for the most vulnerable people in Leicestershire. Contact Rachel for a fundraising pack with all you need - leaflets, stickers, balloons etc. Email rachel. markham@charity-link.org or call 0116 222 2218.

The Charity Link Sleepover – Saturday 26th January

Following the success of the first ever Charity Link Sleepover last January which raised over £2,500 this event returns again bigger and better than ever! Join members of the Charity Link team as they

32

experience a little hardship for a night to help raise funds. Can you brave the cold from 8pm to 8am? No heating, no bed – could you do it? By taking part you will be helping to ensure that local people have the basic essentials that everyone deserves. Registration is £15 to cover administration (£10 for those aged 14 -16 years) with a fundraising target of £60+. Due to Charity Link’s unique way of working (for every £10 donated they can untap £50 from charitable trusts) that would help to provide a bed and bedding for two local people in need – pretty amazing! Contact Rachel to register at rachel.markham@charitylink.org or call 0116 222 2218.

ON THE BEAT

Think before you dial 999! Leicestershire Police has launched a new campaign asking people to think before dialling 999 in a bid to reduce improper use of the emergency number. Superintendent Richard Ward who leads the contact management centre at force headquarters, said: “…999 is for emergencies only and should never be dialled for anything other than this. An emergency is when a serious crime is in progress, when there is danger to life or when violence is being used or threatened. Every moment that is spent dealing with an inappropriate emergency call, means those with real emergencies may experience a delay in getting through, which could put lives at risk. So our message is ‘Think before you dial 999’.” Issues which should be reported to partner agencies include anti-social behaviour such as fly tipping, on-going noise nuisance, dog fouling, all of which should be reported to your local authority. Similarly, abandoned vehicles, should be reported to the council, unless they are causing an obstruction or danger, or they are believed stolen. Untaxed vehicles should be reported to the DVLA.

Lord Willy Bach, Leicestershire’s Police and Crime Commissioner, added: “Using 999 inappropriately can cost lives. It’s as simple as that. “We have gone to some lengths to offer a variety of different ways to contact the police when it’s not an emergency and I urge people to use the most convenient method for them. But most importantly, I ask that they only use the 999 number in real emergencies.” Non-emergency crime can be reported via 101 or online at www.leics.police.uk PC MARK ARJOO Tel: 101 Voicemail ID: 1667 e-mail: mark.arjoo@leicestershire.pnn.police.uk

SWANNINGTON HERITAGE TRUST

Help Make One Thousand Feet of Dead Hedge Swannington Heritage Trust have 10 acres of former coal mining and railway sites that are now managed as woodland and grass heathland. We are part way through a programme of coppicing and thinning wooded areas as part of our site management plans. This produces huge amounts of cut branches that need to be put to good use. It would be such a shame to burn it all. A much more environmentally friendly use to to turn it into dead hedges. These long piles of brash provide several benefits: protection for small mammals and birds from wind, rain and predators; homes for a multitude of insects which are a vital food source for birds; carbon is locked up and only released slowly as the brash decomposes; they limit access to areas where we want wildlife to be left undisturbed. Over the course of a year we will create more than 1,000 feet of dead hedges that will be a major addition to our wildlife habitats.

We have a great team of men and women aged 20-80 who turn out on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday mornings. Some attend all our sessions, others are less regular. YOU would be most welcome to join us and help us achieve even more. If you can use a bow saw or a pair of loppers and stack branches on top of each other, you have the skills we need. To find out more contact Katrina via swanningtonchair@hotmail.com or 07779 275762. Or look at our Hough Mill Facebook and Twitter pages to see photos of what we do.

PET’S CORNER

How to keep your pets warm this winter As winter deepens and the weather starts to bite, it’s important to make sure our pets are warm and comfortable to avoid illness and distress. Even those animals with thick, furry coats are susceptible to the cold, so what can we do to help our dogs, cats, and rabbits stay warm this winter? Keeping your dog warm and cosy A warm dog coat offers protection from the winter cold, and as temperatures drop, even dogs with the thickest fur will benefit from the extra insulation when exercising or playing outside. A fleece-lined inner layer with a waterproof outer is a good choice, particularly if the two layers can be detached and used individually as the weather dictates. Making sure your cat is warm this winter It’s more difficult to ensure your cat is warm in the winter given their independent nature, but they have a natural inclination to find warm places. That’s why it’s advisable to provide a cosy shelter in your garden, to reduce the likelihood of them sitting underneath cars or in other warm but dangerous places.

Protecting your rabbit from the worst of the winter weather If your rabbit is spending the winter in an outdoor hutch, you’ll need to provide additional protection from the elements. Siting their hutch away from the cold winds and driving rain, providing extra bedding, covering the hutch with a blanket and their run/outdoor area with tarpaulin, will all help to keep them healthy and safe.

BOOK REVIEWS

Beat the winter blues

This month, we’re focusing on books to make you laugh, cry, write and reflect your way out of the winter blues. How to be Famous Caitlin Moran Snort-your-tea-out-ofyour-nose-funny, How to be Famous centres around 19-year-old Johanna Morrigan aka the writer Dolly Wilde. It’s 1995, Britpop has taken over the music scene and there’s no better place to be than London. Until, that is, Johanna finds herself the subject of malicious gossip and has to decide whether to flee or fight back.

Why Mummy Drinks: The Journal Gill Sims Frazzled parents everywhere will find something to relate to in Why Mummy Drinks. Humorous reflections on parenting in the modern world precede spaces to jot down your own thoughts each day. If you like journals (and laughing), and have ever wondered whether you should just record yourself shouting ‘Teeth! Hair! Shoes! Hurry up!’ to save having to speak in the morning, this book is for you.

The Accidental Memoir Eve Makis and Anthony Chopper If you’ve ever thought about capturing moments of your life using the written word but have no idea where to start, you need this book. Prompts range from ‘Is there a mystery in your family? A story rarely spoken about?’ to ‘What posters did you have on your bedroom wall?’ and ‘Write a letter to your younger self.’ There are also extracts from other memoirs, writing tips and more.

Down to Earth Monty Don One of the easiest ways to lift your spirits is to get out into nature. There are few things more satisfying than growing something yourself and spring is just around the corner. Down to Earth is a useful book for beginners and experienced gardeners alike. It doesn’t matter whether you have acres of land or a tiny courtyard, you’ll find advice, tips and inspiration on everything from garden design and plant choice to pest control.

Slow Gizzi Erskine Comfort eating doesn’t have to mean chocolate, shop-bought pies and a vat of ice cream. It can mean taking the time to show yourself some self-care by preparing delicious, wholesome, hearty dishes. Slow has plenty of recipes to help you do just that, from warming winter stews to slow-roasted meats and decadent desserts. They’re all written in Gizzi’s usual easy, unaffected style. Salt Beef Brisket anyone? Or Lemon Sherbet Meringue Pie? Yum.
